Even after the reformation of Spherus Magna, a Toa's job is never done. The Toa Nuva, along with the Toa Hagah and Toa Mahri, are among the last of the Toa, and have sworn their lives to protect the people of Spherus Magna.

Admittedly, I've been feeling terrible lately. I didn't even finish my weekly drawing and broke my now months long streak. I thought I would be able to do it, but my emotions weighted me down too much. I might go back to drawing one art every two weeks.
Anyway, I feel like I should do more fun things. I mean, drawing is fun, and I love creating stories for my OCs, but I do have a lot of other interests. And tho I'm sticking to talking about LEGO today, I want to talk more and get out of my shell. And maybe give you more insight into me as a person.
So today I'm going to talk about my favourite LEGO themes and why I love the series, plus how I personally got i to all of them. It's not a normal review whatsoever, just an excuse to ramble about my interests freely. Just remember this is my experience and my feelings.
(And it's not at all like I'm making this post because I need all of this to prepare for a speaking class and the only way to motivate myself is by making a post about it o _o Come on, I'm killing two birds with one stone here!)
Okay, so, my all-time favourite themes are (in chronological order to when I found them):
1. Bionicle
Honourable mention: Hero Factory
2. Ninjago
3. Legends of Chima
4. Monkie Kid
5. Dreamzzz
1. So. Bionicle. I have a weird history with Bionicle. My dad's friends used to get movies for us, and one day it just happened that my dad's friends gave us a pen drive with Bionicle: Legend Reborn on it. I think I would be around... Seven or eight when I watched it I've seen fans say that it was a pretty weak film, but I didn't know Bionicle back then, and I really enjoyed it! That movie was a soft reboot of the series, and as someone who started their Bionicle obsession with that movie, in my opinion it worked really well as a standalone supposed to capture new audiences. I really loved the sense of mystery that was probably lost on new fans. It wasn't exactly explained what or who Mata Nui was, besides him being a warrior who lost his people. And the ending... I really thought there would be a sequel to it, and was really intrigued by whom the great beings were, and what happened to the world, why Mata Nui knew them, what the giant ahh robots were supposed to do.
Of course, when a few years later in middle school I looked for the sequel, I didn't find it. And to be honest, the ending was disappointing to me. However, there was a whole other storyline in Bionicle to catch up on! And so one faithful summer was spent reading all the comics I could find, reading wiki pages one after another, playing Mata Nui online game obsessively, refusing to use a walkthrough. Believe me when I say I was obsessed!
And then out of nowhere in 2015 g2 came out, and I was stoked since I missed out on practically the whole g1 as it was being made. (I mean, it's understandable, I was born the same year the first Bionicle movie came out.) I mean, can you blame me for being excited? A dead franchise that I just started becoming a devoted fan of is suddenly revived from the grave. I felt like the luckiest person on earth that day. Honestly, g2 was a lot simpler than g1, but I really like it, even if most people said it sucked. Sure, it wasn't exactly like g1, and even I cringed a few times when watching the g2 show, but for what it was, it was cool in my eyes, and loved finding all the g1 references. And there were quite a few of them! The story of g2 was simpler, but for little kids I think it would've been fine. But alas, LEGO did a crap job promoting it, and it died early, with an ending that was so bad even I can't defend it. It just didn't make sense, and it was rushed as hell. But I still wished it would've continued.
I love both generations for different things, and I'm sad I didn't get any g2 sets when they were out (Lewa was my favourite one). But years later I managed to get a promotional anniversary set of Tahu and Takua, and you wouldn't believe my happiness when I was building it. It's strange being a relatively new fan compared to others I see online, but I still remember seeing Bionicle commercials, and even have a very vague memory of seeing a Phantoka commercial on our ancient TV. I mean come on, I was so into it, I even learned the Matoran alphabet! My mom had to listen to my countless rambling, and if I ask her about Bionicle today, she still remembers some answers, that's how much into it I was. Hell, this blog started as a Bionicle blog before I moved fully to Monkie Kid content.
Okay, this Bionicle ramble is getting a tad long, so I'll wrap this up. Would I recommend Bionicle to anyone? Well... Not really, unless you like long lore researching adventures. The story is so convoluted, with many sides stories, and it went on for so many years, that despite my obsession I still probably missed like, 40% of the lore. G1 at least, wouldn't vibe with casual audience probably. G2 might be easier on the brain, despite it having some deeper lore too. Plus, there's the cultural appropriation issue, that I'm not qualified to talk about, but others already made pages long blogs and articles about. Plus the weird gender situation. But, it's still a good story in my eyes, despite its many faults. But that's just me, and if you didn't catch on yet, I'm already deep in this hole and there's no getting out of here now.
Honourable mention: This brings us to Hero Factory. I watched the first few episodes at around the same time as the first Bionicle movie. Came from the same source as before. I think it deserves a mention, because I still loved it, and did some lore digging, but I wasn't as obsessed with it as the other positions on the list. I didn't like the later stuff as much, tho some concepts were really cool too. But the story of the first episodes was really well done, and worked great as a movie. The fights were tense, and when watching it for the first time, I couldn't really know if the characters would be okay. Honestly, it got me really excited and invested. A factory of heroes is a unique concept, and I always found it intriguing how they made the robot society work. But, I don't think it needed more time than it needed, unlike Bionicle, where I didn't like the ending of either generation. I think it wrapped things up quite well with the first episodes, and the later ones just feel like cool side stories, and it works in my opinion.
This one I would definitely recommend, because I feel like it's underrated, and it's not long. Like I said, the version I got was just a one movie like compilation. I checked and there's just 11 episodes. It would probably take 1–2 hours to watch it, not counting the later movies and all.
2. Next one is Ninjago! I started watching it almost from the start. I must have been around ten or so... The episodes aired on TV, so I had easy access to it! I almost never missed an episode, and watched even the reruns. And believe me, I was hypnotised when watching it. Tho, starting from rebooted I watched the episodes online, first in my native language, then in English since I started getting too impatient to wait. This was my first obsession. For the longest time, when people asked me what I wanted to do, I said I wanted to be a ninja. One of my oldest OCs is Mika, and she grew up with me. Whenever a new season was to come, I would design a new suit for her. I have a whole dedicated blog to her, I wonder if you all can find it lol. Anyway, for a kid's show, the first seasons were really well written, and the show could be dark when it wanted, but it didn't lack jokes, and most were very funny. And honestly, Ninjago had a really big impact on my life. It taught me not to give up, and it made me want to make the world a better place. Grade school was a horrible time for me, and Ninjago was like my escape. Tho, I might have daydreamed about it too much at one point...
I started distancing myself from Ninjago around hands of time. I didn't watch the show as regularly, catching up on seasons long after they aired. I think that's also where the writing quality started dropping… I just didn't like it as much any more. But it should've been expected with a series that went on for so long. I'm not one of the people who think old Ninjago was better than anything. It wasn't perfect at all. But I didn't like the short format of newer seasons. But then secrets of forbidden spinjitzu dropped, and i as a person started getting better too, so I went back to Ninjago, and while it wasn't still the best and people had a lot of issues I loved those few next seasons. I mean, they somehow hit right into my interests with those seasons. First the adventure movies like atmosphere with the Egyptian like tomb, then they get sucked into a video game, then the very DnD like feeling Shintaro. It was right up my alley. My love for Ninjago was back in full force by then. So you can imagine how sad I was when the word that Ninjago was ending started going around. The series has been with me for half my life. My friends even knew how much I liked it, my best IRL friend even bought me a Ninjago set for Christmas one time. But you know, I thought it was probably Ninjago's time. Nothing can last forever after all, and it had a very good run. Why not end it when the story was still quite alright? And then… Crystallized happened. I didn't watch Crystallized. I heard the spoilers, and I wasn't… thrilled. Especially with Harumi. And people hated that season. It left a bitter taste in my mouth. It didn't feel like a send-off Ninjago deserved.
So you can imagine how damn happy I was about Dragon Rising! And surprise, it's the best Ninjago has been in a while! I absolutely loved the first season. The new characters are wonderful, and that change was certainly what Ninjago needed. And the fact that it's merged with one of other of my beloved LEGO series only makes it better. And that's probably my cue to move to it hehe
So, would I recommend Ninjago? Yeah. Its story is easy to follow, you just need to watch the show. If you're ready to watch sixteen+ seasons that it! Even the worse seasons have some value to them I'd argue. But I may be biased with how close to my heart that series is.
3. Yeah boy, Legends of Chima! I started watching Chima around the same time I started watching Ninjago, and I was equally hooked. And yes, my mom remembers this one as well, I watched it every time it was on too. Actually, I think the first fanfiction I've ever written was about Chima. With a pencil on paper. I think that, while the other series captivated me because of magic or the setting or the action, in Chima it was the characters and their dynamics mostly, despite there being plenty of magic powers and action too, plus a unique setting. The main characters all have distinct personalities, and it's fun to see how their personalities clash or work together. I think it's cool because the conflict between lions and crocodiles takes the main stage in the first season. Later seasons are great too, and they shake things up to make things interesting quite well. The lore isn't as broad as in other series, but it's pretty cool and interesting either way. There were some unique concepts there. I can't explain my love for this theme as well as with other series, because I don't think there was anything big that made me like it. It's just a cool show. I think what there was has been satisfying, tho young me was really sad and angry it ended anyway. But it's great for what it was. But I can't say I'm not happy that Chima is now merged with Ninjago, and it works so well together, and I absolutely love Lord Ras.
I would absolutely recommend it. It's a fun show, and only three seasons long. It can be both fun and serious, and I definitely had a blast watching it.
4. Now one of my newer obsessions! Monkie Kid! I watched the pilot in Chinese when it came out, then I promptly forgot about the series and binge-watched it all when season 3 came out. I was reading about Journey to the West long before the series was announced, since I have a liking for old stories and legends and myths and stuff. And Asian cultures fascinate me. I blame Ninjago with its Japanese influence and all the martial arts movies that were on the TV all the time. Plus Mulan and Kung Fu Panda. Anyway, I can't say much about how accurate it is or anything since I'm not Chinese, but I think the show is great. I noticed a lot of references to Journey To The West. No shocker here, it's inspired by it. But being in this fandom made me learn a lot of new things about China, tho I still have a bunch of things to learn. I'm no expert yet. Tho, I try my best to be respectful.
Umm... Like I said, not much to say about how accurate the story is. But I really liked Journey to the West, so naturally I like Monkie Kid too. Plus, MK i really relatable to me. I feel like my personality is really similar to his, tho I'm more introverted. For some reason, I relate to this portrayal of Macaque and Wukong as well.
I dare to say that from all the series so far, I find this one to be the most well written. I just find the writing to be the most impactful. Plus, the artstyle is very different from other LEGO shows. Action scenes are really fun. The artstyle definitely works in its favour. And yeah, I would recommend this show 100%.
5. And finally, the newest addition to the LEGO series, Dreamzzz! The show is really new and just starting, but I love the concept and the writing! Plus again, I really relate to Mateo. The characters feel like real people you would meet, and how they interact feels realistic. And I found myself liking even the characters that annoyed me, because their personalities were the realistic type of annoying, one that you might find out in the wild. And the concept of a dream world just really speaks to me. And it gives the creators a lot of creative freedom. All wacky things can happen in a dream after all. One thing I didn't expect in the show was the secret agency, and I think it's a clever addition to the story.
I would recommend this series. I hope it'll have a bright future, and that the writing will stay this good.
Well, time to wrap all of this up. Whoever suffered through this whole ramble deserves a juice and a cookie 🍪🧃 For a few finishing thoughts... I noticed a lot of the series I like blend magic powers and technology together. I just thought it's interesting. And I wanted to mention that the songs for Bionicle, Ninjago and Chima absolutely slap. I used to listen to them on repeat all the time lol Even my mom really enjoyed those songs
Yeah, I don't know what this post was for, I just felt like writing all that :v

Building: Bionicle
It’s getting tougher to find the “LEGO®” aisle in toy stores these days. Traditional LEGO construc- tion sets are more often than not hidden behind strangely shaped canisters featuring robotic-looking creatures. Shoppers are more likely to stumble upon this “Bionicle” aisle before ever seeing another LEGO set, for the simple reason that LEGO Bionicle has been the company’s biggest selling product line for the last several years.
But what IS this Bionicle invasion, anyway?
To parents, it tends to be a complete mystery. Robotic warriors from a tropi- cal island or ancient city of legends. A lexicon so complex it has its own diction- ary. A layered story involving collectible disks and masks: Toa and Turaga, Makuta and Rahkshi, Vahki and Matoran. Bohrok and Bohrok-Kal. Video games, shoes, backpacks, and party favors. Even Halloween costumes.
To kids (typically 6-12 year old boys, for whom Bionicle is squarely aimed), Bionicle is a richly populated universe with cool LEGO sets, movies, books, an ever-updating storyline, Bionicle comics shipped with their LEGO Club magazine subscriptions (http://club.LEGO.com), its own official website (http://www.bionicle.com), and popular online resources such as BZPower (http://www.bzpower.com) and Bionicle Sector 01 (http://www.bioniclesector01.com).
Bionicle begins as a story set on the island of Mata Nui (recently expanded to the ancient city-island of Metru Nui) that pits several good guy Toa against bad guy Makuta and his minions. The Toa protect the other inhabit- ants of the islands, the Matoran, from the vicious Rahkshi and Visorak, among other nasties. Each is available as a set.
New and updated construction sets have been released at least twice each year since 2001, when Bionicle was widely introduced. The first six color-coded Toa of Mata Nui -- lava red Tahu, icy white Kopaka, sea blue Gali, stone brown Pohatu, deep black Onua, and forest green Lewa -- were an instant hit, winning awards and shattering sales records. Follow-up releases have also been strong, with updated Toa -- Toa Nuva, Toa Metru, and the latest, Toa
Hordika -- continuing the ongoing story. Of course, the Toa need something to protect, so there have been several rounds of Matoran sets released, the first in 2001 McDon- ald kids meals. Those poor Matoran often need help, from wild Rahi (animals) or Makuta’s Rahkshi “sons” to their own Vahki protector machines run amok.
Driving the story (and not coincidentally, LEGO set sales figures) are sev- eral media, primarily the Bionicle comics from DC and a popular series of books from Scholastic, most authored by Greg Farshtey (who also writes the comic). There have also been two well-received com puter-animated films released directly to video/DVD (“Bionicle:
Mask of Light” and “Bionicle: Legends of Metru Nui”), and a third is in the works. The official Bionicle website likewise provides storyline updates using text and animation, and has also included two immensely popular online games.
When you get into Bionicle, you’re not just buying a construction/action set... you’re entering a universe full of dramatic good-vs-evil action. There’s a lot behind those little canisters on the shelf, just waiting to be discovered.

Ok actually making the Legend Continues dudes as Toa kinda makes me want to do some more obscure/weird Matoran as Toa, anyway here's Nobua (Gravity), "Wizard" (Plantlife) and Podu (Stone): The Early Bionicle Games Siblings!
If you know of any other random weird-looking/obscure background Matoran, let me know (if possible, provide a link or image so I know what they look like) and I'll make a MOC based on them.
(A live-updating list of stuff I use can be found here, feel free to suggest anything not on that list via my askbox.)
(More on how I do background colours; for renders with more than two characters, I use an RNG to get the RGB values, then use the resulting colour for the background)

Welcome to the Tech Girl Tourney!
With a whopping 64 gals who are cyborgs, robots, programs, and more this is shaping up to be a fierce and fun competition!
Here are some rules and such before I give you a written list of contenders and their schedules.
RULES.
Play nice with each other. No harassment or bullying of any kind will be tolerated. It’s a silly little competition! Stay silly! Stay kind!
Think to yourself: "is what I'm about to type about my opponent something I'd like to hear about my favorite blorbo or fandom?" If the answer is "no" don't type it. Hype up your blorbo rather than trash-talk the other gal.
Propaganda is welcome and encouraged (so long as you're following rules 1 & 2). If I miss your propaganda don't hesitate to hop in my inbox and point it out to me. I don't always get notifications on this tumblr account for some reason.
HERE BE SPOILERS (potentially). I don't know every fandom in this tournament but given the nature of these sort of characters, spoilers are highly likely for character reveals! By continuing to follow this blog and participate in this tournament you're consenting to seeing spoilers. I would tag them but I genuinely don't know which characters are spoilers and which aren't.
Play nice with me, your friendly neighborhood tournament runner. I am not a professional tournament runner. I am just another person on the internet with feelings. Don't come flying into my inbox to yell at me about things like seeding, or that your specific blorbo didn't get in, or that you think a certain character doesn't count. I will just delete and block messages that I feel are too hostile toward me. I've seen the kinda stuff other poll runners have had to put up with and I don't want to deal with it here. I just want to have fun!
All polls will go up at 12 pm EST and be up for 1 day each except the final poll which will be up for a week.
With that out of the way! Onto the contenders and schedule!

Little Things I Dig About STRANGE WORLD
Tumblr media
Much like the one I did for PUSS IN BOOTS: THE LAST WISH, this post will be a list of unorganized thoughts on STRANGE WORLD. And as usual, if you haven't seen STRANGE WORLD and were planning on doing so but haven't really had the chance nor gumption to fire up Disney+ and watch it, there be spoilers ahead!
'They're The Clades'. This is a hit the ground running opening right here. An all-too-brief cel-shaded depiction of Jaeger Clade's adventures and exploits, and how his son Searcher was by his side but was never really the rough-and-tumble explorer type. The song would do the Mello Men proud, as it recalls the songs of various live-action adventure movies that Disney had made throughout the '50s. This whole movie, if it wasn't clear before, is a massive homage to that era of adventure stories. The scene alone is evoking an early-to-mid 20th century pulp comic. Also during this sequence, we see these really lovely paintings of the Clades on their adventures. Particularly the visuals of them encountering birds of prey and a bear. It hits all those classic wilderness aesthetics in mere seconds flat.
Avalonia itself is actually quite a cool-looking world. It being on the back of a giant turtle-like beast swimming around on an all-water planet is very much Terry Pratchett's DISCWORLD, but being someone who lived the early 2000s as a kid, it also struck me as very BIONICLE. Hey, did you know Walt Disney Animation Studios was looking to option DISCWORLD for an adaptation of MORT? That was to be Ron Clements and John Musker's movie after THE PRINCESS AND THE FROG, but due to rights issues, that fell through, and they ended up pitching other ideas that would later morph into MOANA.
Continued, Avalonia in the post-Pando era: The retrofuture setting, the sortakinda steampunk-like aesthetic, very TREASURE PLANET in some ways. The graphic design recalled various decades of aesthetics of the 20th century, too. Some '30s and '50s touches on Callisto Mal's ship, the Venture, subtle and neat stuff. Loved the architecture, technology, and cruisers. The cruisers, especially the one the Clade family uses to dust the crops, in particular reminded me of the hovercraft vehicles in the JAK & DAXTER series. That was another action-adventure franchise from the early 2000s that I was very much big on back in the day (and still am!).
Legend. Just Legend. He's literally one of my dogs, but in Disney animated form. Plus he's a tripod. Disabled rep, even for a doggie! It was also nice to see a shot of a disabled Avalonian, too.
Primal Outpost reminds me of game called Heroscape, which I remember being advertised a lot circa 2004... Though my 12-year-old self never played it or got invested in it, I thought it always looked cool. The hexagon pieces and such... But yes, I liked that a role-playing/strategy game played a part in this world, it just added a depth to it: This is a game that the kids/teens play. Today I learned that Heroscape ran from 2004 to 2010, and there was a failed revival somewhere down the line. I kinda wish STRANGE WORLD came out in 2004, this would've been my *shit*. Big time.
The lighting choices are what really make the "strange world" pop. The subtle sunset-like oranges and pinks, the misty-like layers, really brings out a lovely look to everything.
There's a particular shot when the Venture is crash-landing while careening into the insides of the Avalonia turtle-beast-creature... Searcher and Legend drop off as the ship is still speeding, it's a particularly well-done shot.
What little there is of the vibe - both good and bad - between Callisto Mal and Meridian Clade, particularly when it shows up during their confrontation in the Venture cockpit.
Right before Ethan meets Splat in that cave of bioluminescent creatures, some of them are apparent in a few frames: They look kind of like glass vases with fireflies inside of them. A small but cool detail, and the framerate on them is much slower.
Splat slapping Ethan when you think they're going to do the HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON-esque connect-with-each-other moment, a well-timed send-up of those kinds of person-and-creature scenes.
The Clade men playing Primal Outpost is a standout scene to me, and I absolutely love the jab at the well-repeated "criticism" that Disney animated movies don't work without traditional bad guy villains in them.
How Searcher and Jaeger can't get the handshake/gestures right, they're preemptively doing a different one. It's a fun little character beat for both of them.
Everything about the much healthier insides of the beast after the heart is restored. A colorful, near-psychedelic set of images.

A Bionicle Question About Matoro
Hey to anyone out there... do you think it was Matoro's soul that saved Mata Nui when he sacrificed himself to save him?
Because when Kopeke asked Hahli if Matoro was truly dead, she said this: “He is. But his life force brought Mata Nui back from the endless dark. So you could say that Matoro is a part of everything now – the sky, the waters, the sunlight, and every living thing that walks or flies or swims or crawls. Matoro is dead… but never truly gone… not as long as the Great Spirit Mata Nui exists.”
I've been wondering what that meant ever since I first read that part of the story. At first I thought it meant his soul was now a part of everything. After asking a few fans, one of them said it was up to interpretation, because not everyone believes souls exist, that some people believe life-force and souls are the same thing, but others believe they're completely different, that life-force is a presence/energy that gives life while souls continue to exist after death. They didn't believe in souls in the religious sense, so he thought Matoro's presence, energy was a part of everything.
The idea of Matoro's soul being everywhere made me feel better, because he may have been dead... but he was still truly there. The idea of his energy being everywhere... I don't even want to think about it, because he was never truly there, it's not really him, just the energy that radiated from him.
It was so horrible, soul-destroying, seeing what happened to Matoro. And the idea of Matoro not really being there... made me feel so much worse.
And lately I've discovered more and more evidence that it's not up to interpretation, and that he was turned into life-force rather than soul, both in the story, and in a few of the chats Greg Farshtey would answer questions to.
So if anyone has anything to say to object that, please do.
Here's some of the things I discovered in the Q@A chat logs with Mr. Farshtey. The red texts are the questions; the orange texts are the answers.
This one's an excerpt from the offical Greg diologue on February 1 2008. Toa Nidhiki05's Question: 1a. "Could the Ignika in theory bring several masks to life, than create bodies for them and have his own 'Toa' team?" 1b."If not, why?" Greg's Answer: 1) "No. While it is possible for the Ignika to bring things like rays of light to life, it cannot give something a mind. The Hau, for example, has no mind. So if you bring it to life, all you have is something that hungers, but it isn't going to think or go out and fight for right. It will be like a zombie, just driven by primal instinct"
These are all excerpts from the official Greg discussion. First one's from January 7 2006. Khote's Question: 12)"If the Nuva (Or another Toa team) succeed on finding the Mask of Life, it would just help to keep Mata Nui alive, but it wouldn't awaken him, right?" Greg's Answer: 12) "Right"
Second one's from March Second 2006. The Captain's Question: 6. "Can the MoLi actually take life away from a organism? Or can you not tell us yet?" Greg's Answer: "ANSWER: Yes, it can"
Third one's from June 9 2006. Code Name: Raven's Question: 1.) "Zaktan mentions that every 5000 years or so the MoLi is donned by a Toa, who is then incinerated from the energies released. Is this sacrifice needed to keep the universe from going crazy?" and 3.) "Is that what the Toa of Magnetism's team was doing?" Greg's Answer: 1) "Yes, although Zaktan is also buying into legends. The Mask does not get worn anywhere near that often, but as with most things, exaggeration sets in." and 3) "Yes"
Fourth one's from July 26 2006. Toa Lhikan Hordika's Question: 1) "Are the following actual powers of the Ignika: Future sight, hovering (more of an ability than a power), fusion, enlargement of other beings." Greg's Answer: 1) "Yes, along with other powers related to life, such as accelerating plant growth, healing, and who knows what else I will come up with. Think big picture -- eliminating the idea of resurrecting the dead (which it can't do), what else could the power of Life do?"
Fifth one's from October 16 2006. Little Zivon's Question: 3) "Could the Mask of Life help Makuta to get a physical body again?" Greg's Answer: 3) "Not directly, no. The mask can evolve existing things and give life to inanimate objects, but it cannot create life whole or create life with no spirit. Makuta needs a living or mechanical body with no spirit already in it."
Sixth one is from October 26 2006. Toa Haomin's Question: 8."Will we discover the mask of life's original purpose?" Greg's Answer: 8) "I can tell you that now -- the mask exists to regenerate the life energies of Mata Nui. That is its only purpose."
Seventh one is from October 28 2006. ToM Dracone's Question: 8. "The Mask of Life cannot bring inanimate objects to life, correct?" and 9. "If the above is the case, then I have a hypothesis as to why the Mask can't bring the dead back to life: firstly, after, say, a Matoran dies, his spirit lingers for a little, and then it disappears. Even if the Mask could give life to inanimate objects, it still couldn't call back the Matoran's spirit, and so without the spirit, the Matoran can't be revived. Is this right?" Greg's Answer: 8) "Yes, it can. What it cannot do is bring the dead back to life." and 9) "Exactly. And if your spirit is not there, you aren't back to life, you are just parts moving."
Eighth one is from March 1 2007. Kraahlix's Question: 3. "Can the Mask of Life take away life as Zaktan stated? "And with power over life also comes the power over death" or something..." Greg's Answer: "A. Yes"
I had found all these with the source of Ignika - The Great Archives
And here are more that I discovered regarding life-force and soul in the Bionicle world.
This first excerpt is from the official Greg dialogues. First one's from March 20 2008. Makuta Desaima's Question: 6- "What sort of things can the Toa Ignika do with its powers? Sap life, mutate beings, kill them, empower them etc?" and 7- "Is it possible for the Toa Ignika to bring any inanimate object to life? Can it reanimate dead beings?" Greg's Answer: 6) "And evolve them, and devolve them" and 7) "It cannot reanimate the dead, no. It can bring life to objects providing those objects have some organic molecules in them."
I found this with the source of https://biosector01.com/wiki/Ignika
And lastly, from the sources of https://biosector01.com/wiki/Life are these excerpts from the official Greg dialogue and official Greg discussion. The Shadow Makuta's Question: 6) "What is Toa Ignika's Nuva Blast effect?" Greg's Answer: 6) "Pretty much the same as what you would get if you shattered the Mask of Life -- everything -- EVERYTHING, rays of light, rocks, equipment, armor -- would come to life."
And from Takuta Nui: Q: "In MoL, all we saw of Takutanuva's powers was a revival of Jaller's life. I'm sure that was just a fraction of his full capability. Do you have a list of his powers, or at least an idea of the full extent of his strength?" and "Wait, so if part of Makuta's life-force was used to revive Jaller, then does that mean it was " poured " into him, or just " used ", then returned to Makuta's life-force?" "If those are the powers he has, then can he combine them into new powers, or all of them into one land-shaking blast?" Greg's Answer: A: "Actually, that was not so much a power as it was using part of Makuta's life force to bring him back. Takutanuva had all of Makuta's powers, including the 42 Rahkshi powers, and all of Takanuva's powers." and 1) "You can't give life force to someone and then have it flow back into you. If it did, the person you gave it to would drop dead."... 2) "He can't combine them into new powers, no. It's possible he could use more than one power at once, however."
These were all the quotes that stood out to me, that made it seem that Matoro not only wasn't turned into soul, but that whatever he was turned to isn't up to interpretation at all.
...ALSO THIS ToaOfPlastic on X: "The original backstory legend, (from the matoran's perspective of course) with more papu and rangi info. https://t.co/URw0LxnoNA" / X (twitter.com) It comes from a story bible from 2002. I think it's supposed to be a concept for the actual stories that would come.
If he really was life force and not soul... that would also mean that not only Matoro was turned into life-force, but that when Makuta died with the Great Spirit Robot, then as all the energies of the now dysfunctional robot would escape into the ether, including Matoro, meaning now he is truly gone.
I really do want to believe that Matoro's soul saved Mata Nui, that it's his soul that's everywhere now, and a part of him, but after discovering all of this... I don't want to give up hope or accept that he isn't but... I think Matoro is completely fucked.

I’m going to complain about Ganondorf in TotK and the story told through the Tears of the Dragon memories. Spoilers ahead.
In the introduction, when Link and Zelda find Ganondorf underneath Hyrule Castle, there was one specific bit that got me excited. It was when Ganondorf called Link “the one chosen by Rauru” or something to that effect. I took this to mean that Ganondorf has lived through so many eras and clashed with so many heroes that he no longer views them as individuals, but merely incarnations of that little boy from the forest who thwarted his plans so long ago. It was a fascinating and somewhat tragic interpretation of the immortal king of evil, and I was excited to see how he would interact with Link and Zelda later in the game. Considering how BotW’s Link and Zelda both struggled with living up to the example set by their predecessors in the backstory, a Ganondorf who can only see them as continuations of their past selves rather than the individuals they are seemed to me like a perfect villain!
And then I found out that Rauru was not the Sage of Light who watched over the Hero of Time as he slept for seven years. Rauru was a ghost dragon man who in life was the first king of Hyrule and gave Link his wacky new arm. Which kind of invalidated my interpretation of Ganondorf, but hey, this is still interesting.
As I played the game and found all of Zelda’s memories, something became more and more apparent. This Gerudo man named Ganondorf was not the king of thieves who tricked Link into opening the door to the Sacred Realm. He was not the tyrant who survived being impaled by his would-be executioners. He was not the raging storm of evil and malice that just one game previously reduced Hyrule to rubble.
I wasn’t going to fight the villain who had tormented one of my favorite video game heroes for generations. I was going to fight a stranger with the same name and a similar face.
I felt betrayed, which wasn’t helped by how much the storyline told through the memories reminded me of OoT while deliberately not mentioning any of its lore (namely the Triforce and the Golden Goddesses). I felt like the creators of this game were trying to erase and replace every Legend of Zelda that I played and loved when I was growing up. The only experience I can think of where I had a similar emotional reaction was when Bionicle was cancelled and unceremoniously replaced by Hero Factory the same year.
I haven’t played TotK since I first finished the main story back in May. I’m not as upset now as I was when I was playing through the game, but this still bothers me. There’s plenty that I love about TotK, but it’s mired in everything I just described.

I know it’s meant to invoke the idea of new beginnings by having everyone leave the Matoran Universe to live on Spherus Magna, dismantling the Great Spirit Robot to create new homes as Creation comes from Destruction- Not unlike how the island of Mata Nui has to be destroyed for a new future, and so too followed its namesake’s body that it had rested upon...
But there is something compelling to me about the idea of people continuing to inhabit Mata Nui’s decaying body. Like maybe it sinks into the earth from its weight, eventually resting against some bedrock- And the ceilings of the domes are taken apart to let in natural sunlight and air, now that the Great Spirit Robot’s life support systems are no longer active.
So you’ve got this continental, walled-off Valley of the Great Spirit. You’ve got this dead Titan’s remains that everyone lives and continues to feed upon, like a godly whale fall- Like the Boiling Isles of The Owl House, a decayed corpse that people live upon;
Tumblr media
It’s slowly decomposing as microorganisms and ecosystems thrive, like a real dead body- Adding to the biological motif of Mata Nui with this final decay. Even in death, the Great Spirit still houses and sustains his people. And sure, you could argue that it could indicate people haven’t really moved on... But does it really?
It could show how life continues on even after death, even WITH death, because of it! And it makes sense that people would still be attached to their home and not want to immediately take it apart- Maybe parts of the Matoran Universe would collapse, but then people would choose to live on these remains once they’ve settled.
Even for those who’ve moved on, for other biomechanicals made elsewhere- It’s a bit of a holy pilgrimage to come here, a Mecca, and come in touch with one’s origins. With one’s God- To see and know and thank the one who gave it all that yielded you, and still continues to.
How might the landscape change? Would the oceans remain the same, or spill out of this broken body? This Valley of the Great Spirit might become desolate, but people could still survive in it- Especially by bringing in resources from across Spherus Magna, doing some terraforming of their own!
It wouldn’t be the same Universe but it’s still there, and so it can be lived upon. People are willing to put in the effort. In a meta sense I know I am, because I guess I’m just too attached to this universe and hate to see it go, especially as I write more fanon to flesh it out- Though certainly not here, where I do the literal opposite!
We could even see old concepts like Three Finger Island (now the Three Finger Mountains), or the Knee, symbolically find new life in the future- When once they were unlived concepts of the past! This story came and lived and died, and so it gives thanks by breathing life into what never had its chance, into the concepts that had laid its foundations.
Creation in Destruction, Life in Death- Decomposers living within a decaying corpse, like in real life! Like Ymir from Norse myth, because Bionicle drew from mythos like any good legend. It sounds like a very metal and fascinating idea, a last ode, and a fitting final chapter, to what is meant to be a Biological Chronicle.
And I think a valley that is itself the decaying corpse of a god... That could invoke the grand sense of mystery and mythos, the lore and history, that the island of Mata Nui once had- Ruins, an outcome, the sublime ending of a story that makes you want to know the origin, know of its past life and what happened here, and what continues to! It makes you ask questions, what cataclysm could’ve felled such a being??? What cosmic scale? It could be beautiful...
So when people tell you the Legend of the Bionicle- They mean the story of Mata Nui, how he was born and eventually left this body behind to rest, to return to the earth of the home he came from. This is the Biological Chronicle’s epilogue, this is its aftermath.

The Greg Farshtey Recap #1
Welcome to the first Greg Farshtey Recap, where we’ll be looking through every available Q&A session and forum thread featuring the author of the BIONICLE comics, story serials and majority of the books, in order to understand what’s really important. We’ll be starting with a series of BZPower interviews that ran from late 2002 to early 2003 and were a predecessor to the Official Greg Discussion Topic.
Without further ado, let’s get to it!
Tumblr media
“Q: Have you worked with LEGO on other projects besides BIONICLE? How did LEGO originally approach you to work for them?
A: I am on staff at the LEGO Company, employed in the Creative Center in Enfield, CT. I write the LEGO Magazine, some web content, the BIONICLE comic, the GALIDOR comic, and whatever else anyone asks me to do. I started in October 2000, and got the opportunity to write the BIONICLE comic based on some sample script pages I submitted.” This question is a good reminder that Greg worked for LEGO already before BIONICLE (and continues to do so to this day). It’s also interesting that he only got to write the comics based on script submissions. That is because he originally wasn’t supposed to do them but ended up replacing the original writer. Greg talks about it more in the final episode of the Gathered Friends podcast ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tumblr media
“The Toa Nuva stay armored at all times in the storyline” This comes from a BZP news post with highlights from an interview that unfortunately seems to have been lost to time. That small tidbit implies that the Nuva armor is something that can be detached, which fits with its later portrayal in the books: Then he removed his Nuva armor and tossed that aside as well. “There. No mask. No weapons. No extra armor. [...]” -Onua in Dark Destiny -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tumblr media
“Q: Will there be any more toa? A: Possibly, but not for a while yet.”
It’s very interesting to see that the answer wasn’t a “No” or “Cannot be revealed yet” (though I suppose the second one would imply that there definitely is something planned). The idea of there being more Toa has always been pretty strong within the fan imagination, as seen with the legendary Toa Voriki, or even many Toa concepts that appeared in the Zany Brainy Mask Contest. Another thing to remember is that at the time of this interview, the “Mask of Light” movie was already in production so Greg would most likely be aware of Takanuva. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tumblr media
“Q: What is a Matoran? In other words, is a Matoran just a new name for the Tohunga, or does it consist of everyone. Hafu, Huki, Onewa and Pohatu are all Po-Korans. Does this mean that these four are now Matorans, or only Hafu and Huki?
A: "Matoran" is only used to refer to the villagers, although technically a Turaga is a Matoran who has ascended to a leadership role. But when we use it, we mean villagers.”
This question addresses something that is still a bit undefined to this day: a unified name for the Matoran/Toa/Turaga species. The description Greg gives here for the nature of Turaga is reminiscent of the Protectors from G2, which are just chosen Okotans. This reinforces the early hierarchy which went as: Matoran>Turaga>Toa, as the one we are used to knowing from Legends of Metru Nui onward (Matoran>Toa>Turaga) wasn’t developed yet. I highly encourage checking out Mister N’s article about the early role of the Tohunga and Turaga if you want to learn more about this subject. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tumblr media
“Q: how long does it usually take to come up with story elements for the toys?
A: The story team works way ahead of time on the story.. we are in the process of putting together 2004's story now and getting it concept tested.”
Nothing much to say, just very important to always keep that fact in mind while going forward into the future questions -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tumblr media
“Q: Are there plans for the Shadow Toa to return in the future?
A: Not that I know of. However, the overall planning for the BIONICLE storyline is done by the BIONICLE team in Europe and America, so they may have things in mind for the future that I am not aware of yet.”
I initially thought that the first mention of the Shadow Toa happened with their first official appearance in the 2003 novel, “Tale of the Toa”, since the videogame in which they were originally meant to debut, “BIONICLE: the Legend of Mata Nui”, was cancelled. It would appear that actually they were officially mentioned in a short recap included in the first comic from the Bohrok Saga, and that's why we’re seeing them being asked about already in 2002.
Tumblr media
“Finally, they overcame shadow versions of themselves and achieved a great victory over Makuta!” ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- And that will be all for today! To do an even shorter recap, in late 2002:
-Greg have worked for LEGO before BIONICLE -Nuva armor was already considered to be something detachable -Greg didn’t deny the possibility of more Toa -Turaga was considered to be a higher Matoran -The story team already worked on the 2004 line story -People were asking about the Shadow Toa, though there weren’t any plans yet for their return
Big shoutouts to The Great Archives, the website hosting all of archived conversations with Greg (which of course I used and will be using for all the recap posts). See you next time on the Chronicles of Ankut Nui!

Going to list all the major changes Im doing in my fancanon and my goals with it (things I want to expand on, work differently as well as make better hjan in actual canon). My main goal w my fancanon is to make the world of Bionicle as vast and complex as I imagine it to be and my changes reflect this goal. I love the world of Bionicle for having duch a vast and interesting world, but a lot of the issues I have with the overall story prevent the world from being as good as it could be. So my changes will mostly be about that than any major story fixes.
Worth noting out that this is moreso an extended headcanon universe with a spoonful of fix-it than a complete reimaging/retool of the canon(although some parts are like a reimaging, esp the Bara Magna stuff). Were it a reimaging I would do things differently and take more creative liberties with the source material. Also most major plot beats will stay the same. I cant go "Web of Shadows, Bohrok Kal arc and Brothers in Arms are removed because I dont like them". Same w characters. I may not like Lesovikk or most of the minor OOMN agents due to finding them pointless and boring but Im not going to remove them because of that, that would go against my Modus Operandi of making the world feel as vast as possible.
A more clearly defined world thats still vast and engaging but feels more cohesive.
More detail into worldbuilding, making the world feel more vibrant and alive. Trying to get the amount of detail the first four years had in its world into the larger world/the lter years as well.
Making the non Matoran species feel better implemented into the story and more clearly thought out tham in canon. (looks at my meta series that I still need to continue) Also making the Matoran world and the non matoran aspects of the worldbuilding feel more cohesive and in same setting than two different places pasted together. (worth noting that most of my rewrites are aimed at the non Matoran parts of the universe because tjey are simutaneously more interesting but also WAY MORE FRUSTRATING to me)
Making the world and story feel cohesive, streamlining stuff thats too convoluted or has contradictory information (cough the Barraki lore cough).
On a related note, making the Big Twist feel more natural and like it fits for the whole world rather than it feeling it only fits for half of tje world.
A rich history with lots of detail put into it. Some changes to the timeline either to streamline it or make it make more sense for x thing happening before y (ie TAKUA SHOULDNT BEEN THE FIRST BEING CREATED IN THE ENTIRE UNIVERSE. He cam still be one of tje first if not first Matoran But not the first being)
Attempting to make the antagonistic characters/villains more complex than in canon and make them feel like actual individuals rather than just cliche bad guys w the same few archetypes pasted over and over again because Greg can only write one type of villain lmao.
Certain characters are utilized more than in canon (Lariska, Ancient, most non TSO Dark Hunters, Krakua,) Most notably Nektann is vastly more important than he is in canon.
Actually utilizing characters w good intro arcs who are tossed aside (yes this is about Karzhani, yes Im still bitter what tjey did to him)
OCs!!!!! Because I like making ocs.
More female characters as well as genderless and nonbinary characters. This includes both making new characters as well as headcanons
Love is canon to an extent (MU individuals can feel romantic love but are compldtely unable to feel sexual love dye to being made asexual.) SOME canonical romantic relationship (most notably yes, Im making hewiki/macku canon.)
Some plotpoints are slightly retooled to make more sense
Serials starting in 2006 rather than 07 and serials in 2007 that took place outside Mahri Nui. Serials should be gaiden stories that happen alongside the mainstory/meanwhile in another location.
Ancient isnt killed off/dies differently (also posibly he isnt an order double agent dunno yet)
Possibly having Icarax kill off TSO instead of Botarr since I really dont like how Destiny War made TSO a Teridax clone and Reign Of Shadows did barely anything with him.
Massive retool of Reign of Shadows to make it feel like the Destiny War/Dwellers in Darkness of 2009, feeling like this grand story of every major party fighting against Teridax.
Massive retool of the Bara Magna storyline, changing the tone to more serious rather thn the kiddy "power of friendship yay!!!" Legend Reborn was, making the Bara Magna storyline 2 years instead of 1 (one tjats setting up the world, second w Mata Nui stuff) and having the scrapped stuff w the elemental lords and robot dinos and what not. Mata Nuis charcter is also reworked.
The ending is MOSTLY the same, but slightly retooled to feel like a true climax and whole series coming together.
Either retooling or outright removal of the post canon storyline. Most of the stuff introducrd in this part can stay ((really the only thing I consider removing is the Golden Skinned Being as well as Velika having like 50 double agents on Bara Magna since that was kinda stupid)) not just sure Im gonna keep the actual events
But yeah these are my main goals/changes w the bonk

Ok so this isn't a template-related MOC post, but @cuboidbusinessman alerted me to the existence of Bionicle: The Legend Continues, a choose-your-own-adventure game (which doesn't run on my computer for some reason) that has some... interesting protagonists (they're both meant to be Ta-Matoran, but one of them is beige, orange and yellow and the other is light-grey and black, so I made them Stone and Magnetism respectively)
Also I'm using the movie designs for the masks, since the in-game designs are based on the movie Matoran.
(A live-updating list of stuff I use can be found here, feel free to suggest anything not on that list via my askbox.)
(Also this is the first time since I started using my current background-colour system that I've made a MOC with two characters of different elements; when that happens, I use this website to mix the colours together)

Ctrl-C-Matoran
So, the core idea of my alt-Bionicle story is that I want Tahu and Tahu Nuva to coexist--and Vakama and Vakama and Vakama Hordika. Etc, etc. The earlier versions of this, as a kid, basically boiled down to “it’s like the comics/magazines/movie, except there’s a freak accident and now there are two of Tahu.”
And two of Pohatu and Onua and Vakama... etc, etc. Therein lies the problem with trying to canonize the old solutions: one freak accident is fine. Two is... doable. Three is getting to be a bit much.
Fortunately, insofar as we’re referring to bio-mechanical creatures, I think there’s a relatively easy solution, and it factors into my world-building.
In the beginning, when the Great Beings first made the world, they brought forth many beings to populate it and labour within it, beings and races beyond count: Makuta, Skakdi, and Rahi of every kind. Last of all, and yet the greatest, for the world was made for them, were the Matoran.
A different being was this, built of a mechanical frame and yet not robotic, for biological life was poured into it and sustained it and a new thing it was, truly Bionicle. Their domain was to be the Great Machine, from the crown of Metru Nui to the distant Southern Isles, and theirs it was to tend and sustain the great mechanics of that machine.
Thus runs the legendary account of the Matoran creation, and it is not inaccurate, thought clothed in legend. The Matoran are uniquely melded beings, but the robotic “framework” that they inhabit is, as many things are, built on a pattern. In the early days of their domain, there were several factories active that built them, according to the template of the Prototype (some say he or she lives yet in one of the islands, perhaps indistinguishable from its many copies).
But none of the Matoran-frames will work without the biological life poured into it. Derived, it is said, of malleable viruses, this is the essence of the Matoran, the source of its sentience and the vital component of its continued functioning. A perfect viral mix was developed for the Prototype, and from this viral soup were all subsequent Matoran ladelled, for the virus grows and spreads as it is fed. Little memory or self-knowledge was there to transfer in those early days, but in later times, it is said, a child-being could indeed recall something of the memories of its parent, and being closely akin, might greatly resemble its progenitor.
As the Matoran do not age, or age but slowly, the factories ceased production when the Great Machine was sufficiently populated. Since then, the secrets of those factories have been lost, and the Matoran dwell alone without the Great Beings that made them, but some hold that the archives of Metru Nui still contain the manuals for their instruction.
From the prototype, four different models were developed: Matoran of Earth, Air, Water, and Fire. Some of these were modified further, so that, for example, select lineages of Ta-Matoran might be Vo-Matoran (Matoran of Lightning).
A fifth model was developed from the proto-Matoran: larger, stronger, more powerful, and endowed with great magical powers. This was the Toa, and the Great Beings named her Helryx. Later Toa were not copied from her, but were Matoran whose bodies were re-engineered: limbs extended and tools rebuilt, save for one team only: the Toa Mata, of whom many songs are sung.
