I think the Mask of Elemental Energy is one of the funniest masks in Bionicle canon, for the sole reason that it originated as a power-up in one of the non-canon videogame adaptations (and a collectible in another one) and is only canon because it was featured in a fan-submitted story that won a canonisation contest.

A funny thing about Bionicle is that, because of the nature of the 2004-2005 arc and the fact that a lot of the backstory wasn't revealed until 2009, there is no way to talk about the storyline in both in- and out-of-universe chronological order.

It's Makuta o'clock
A rather extravagant Makuta who specialized in vibrantly colorful and fanciful bird rahi. The Makuta's evolution to gaseous beings presented a new problem regarding the need for new bodies, and this Makuta saw his opportunity and went for it, becoming the expert in body design; aiding his fellow Makuta in either tailoring their own new vessels to better suit their needs or creating entirely new bespoke ones for them. He himself could never settle for just one body, and frequently hopped between countless vessels of his own design, many of them just as colorful and fanciful as his rahi. He was harvested for his Antidermis by Teridax upon the latter's ascension to the new GSR.
A Makuta who was rather paranoid about their own survival, and considering how the Brotherhood was, this fear wasn't exactly baseless. Their obsession with keeping watch on everyone eventually gave them the position of security chief of the Brotherhood. They mainly stayed in the Makuta's headquarters as the fortresses' panopticon, having created a species of fluttering eyeball-like rahi that were all psychically connected to each other and their creator, forming a sort of security camera system so this Makuta could observe the going ons of the fortress. Their paranoia and position ultimately did not save them from the fate of many Makuta, being cannibalized so their Antidermis could fuel Teridax's Rahkshi legions. There are multiple groups on the newly reformed Spherus Magna who are looking to try and use the surviving eyeball rahi for their own security and spying purposes, but results have been lackluster.
A Makuta who truly loved making bizarre, usually dangerous, and often highly venomous rahi species. The Fusa was one of their tamer creations, and one of the few to spread out in the matoran universe, but most of their work was confined to the largish island in the south of the MU they were assigned. The island was used as a penal colony by the league of six kingdoms in the past, but the island is nowadays more known for its hardy inhabitants and wildly unique and deadly rahi. This Makuta has not been seen for quite some time, with the Brotherhood's internal register listing them as "presumed dead". Despite this, nobody is quite sure as to how they died, or even if they did, although a common joke answer is that they finally created a rahi so deadly that it killed them.

Time for some controversy.
I don't really ship bionicle characters that much (Hewkii & Macku being one of my few exceptions)
But.
I think the idea of Kiina and Mata Nui is hilarious. I don't really even ship them romantically, I just chuckle at the thought of this eccentric glatorian putting the moves on someone who's essentially God.
Kiina constantly dropping the worst pick up lines and innuendos, and every single one just flying right over Mata Nui's head.
Meanwhile, Gresh is absolutely dying of laughter, Berix is mortified, and Ackar is just stonefaced and refuses to explain any of it. "Oh Mata Nui, you sweet summer child."
Of course, after the reformation, you can imagine the psychic damage the toa get from finding out their Glatorian coworker made a pass at god.
Again, not really shipping, I just think it's a funny setup.

It's finished! Get it here!
Some ideas had to be changed due to complexity or just that I couldn't be bothered, but I tried staying as accurate as possible to my original concepts.

My take on the Turaga Nui, from Shauni's (@legend-as-old-as-time) WIP fic set in Rags' (@magicalgirlmascot ) KNPS AU. Snippets of the fic here and here.
In which the Turaga form a fusion in order to defeat the Rahi Nui, but their past experience with the Hordika venom results in the Turaga Nui taking on a somewhat ...unexpected form. After the battle, the Toa Mata catch up with them. Pictured here is Lewa having the appropriate reaction to finding out his six mentors have turned into some kind of weird dragon-chimera-kaiju thing.
Some design notes under the cut:
The Turaga Nui's form combines traits from the forms the Metru had as Toa Hordika, known in this universe as the Kini Nui werebeasts. So, this was my take on them individually here:
Tumblr media
(The Metru's human forms can be seen here) I hope it's fairly self explanatory which features come from which werebeast, but a few other fun design notes...
So, in KNPS, the Toa Kaita look a lot like the Steven Universe fusions, with extra eyes and limbs. The Turaga Nui follows a similar logic but on a more bestial body layout.
The top two arms are the most humanoid, as TN signs in ASL as well as speaking aloud whenever it is practical to do so (i.e. when there is not a Toa of Air attached to their neck). The next two pairs of limbs can function either as arms or forelegs, so the digits are more paw-like.
The wings are obviously based on a snowy owl and come from Nuju's werebeast form. Male snowy owls typically have lighter coloured plumage while females have prominent black bars on their feathers. Nuju in particular would probably have been almost completely white as a werebeast given he's an ice Toa and has white hair in human form. The Turaga Nui, however, is composed of five men and one woman, so I gave them a small amount of barring on the tips of one wing while the other is plain white. (The bars also help tie it back to the badger stripes on their face from a design standpoint)
The Kaita have metallic gold or silver skin, I suggested black and white patterns for TN's colour scheme to make them visibly nonhuman but also distinct from the Kaita.
Shauni felt that there should be more accents of each element's colours, however, so we decided on the "black" scales actually having an iridescent sheen to them.
I'd already been planning to give TN spots similar to that of a newt, but didn't realise until I started doing it that white spots on black combined with the iridescent colours gives the impression of a night sky/galaxy pattern.
I had previously suggested the name "Tien" to Shauni (Turaga Nui = T.N. Said aloud it phonetically sounds like "Tien"). Turns out Shauni had the exact same thought. Furthermore, it's a name in several cultures, various meanings include "heavenly being", "celestial" and "sky" (An etymologically related name is the Chinese "Tianlong", which means "Celestial Dragon")
So, accidentally coming up with a name that means "celestial" and then accidentally making them look like a living galaxy was a fun coincidence.
Also, apparently one of Rags' favourite DBZ characters was named Tien, so that was a plus for her!
The tail has owl feathers but is structurally more similar to the tail of an aquatic newt.
The eyes are based on the Turaga's animal forms but the colours come from their eye-glow. The three eyes visible in the image are Vakama's (green), Matau's (red), and Onewa's (blue)
As previous;y mentioned, photographs of jumping ferrets helped in drawing the dragon's limbs . I also ended up referencing hairless cats to get a handle on what the paws would look like with no fur.
I did do a version that shows the full body pose, which I quite liked, but felt that the cropped composition above was better to show the character details given tumblr's scrolling format

Alright more Makuta time
A Makuta who ruled over an island covered by a vast desert with a single long winding river in the middle. Upon being given this domain, they promptly propped themselves up as a divine ruler to the local Matoran and other inhabitants, equal or perhaps even greater to the Great Spirit himself. While making the inhabitants build large geometric monuments in their honor, this Makuta went about creating rahi species for this island's environment. Their tastes were a tad eclectic, creating species of hawks, falcons, ibises, jackals, crocodiles, cats, scorpions, serpents, & scarabs, among other things. Eventually the Brotherhood took greater notice of this Makuta's activities, and with Teridax particularly viewing this as a usurpation attempt of his own divine usurpation plan, ordered this Makuta to be killed. The deed was successful, but afterwards, the leader of the now deceased Makuta's Hagah declared themselves the divine successor of the island's former ruler, kickstarting a dynasty.
A Makuta who pattered herself as a witch/alchemist, keeping large amounts of her Antidermis in specialized cauldrons and constantly coming up with new concoctions. She actually played a great role in the advancement of Rahkshi and Kraata production, as she found out how to specifically manipulate the Makuta's Antidermis to produce a Kraata of the desired type, rather than just blindly creating Kraata with random abilities. She was eventually killed by the Order of Mata Nui, but considering how many cauldrons she had stashed around that carried her own Antidermis, a Makuta's very own life force, it's entirely possible she could reemerge.
A Makuta whose creative talents laid in the design and creation of buildings, rather than of rahi. He was soon made the head architect of the Brotherhood, with practically all of their fortresses and facilities at least designed by him. Any species of rahi he did create were in service to construction, wether they be beasts of burden to help carry raw materials, or species with features and apparatuses that could be used to aid in construction (crane-like trunks, excavator claws, etc.). Surviving till Teridax's ascension, this Makuta, like the rest of the known surviving Brotherhood, had his Antidermis harvested to make legions of Rahkshi.

Having AUs is fun
Having Bionicle AUs is also fun because IT'S CANON that other universes/alternate realities exist, so that just gives you free reign to have fun
I know I am
One AU sees the Metru as cats while another sees them as sort of Magical girls
Idk, just saying

Someone should make a list of all the Bionicle books, comics etc. in in-universe chronological order. Maybe even splitting some of them up if they contain flashbacks or whatever.
