i don’t dance - matthew tkachuk
Tumblr media
matthew tkachuk x fem!reader
summary: while on a road trip with your best friend, he shows you around calgary, including his favourite country bar
warnings: drinking, language, nsfw themes/implied smut, i’ve been thinking about cowboy matt a lot lately, idk how to line dance so i apologize in advance
word count: 1.9k yeehaw matt playlist 🎧
“matty, you’re joking right?” you pleaded hopefully, looking at your best friend who stood before you, a black cowboy hat atop his head.
“you know what they say - when in…calgary,” he replied with a toothy grin.
“i think the phrase is ‘when in rome, genius,” you both laughed. but you were not in rome, you were in calgary alberta, and matthew had spent his entire day off showing you around the city he spent so many years calling home. you knew matt had loved his time with the flames, but florida was home now; and he was off to a great start with the panthers, as well as enjoying the warm weather.
you and the tkachuks had grown up down the street from eachother in st.louis, and while you were closer to his sisters age, you had always been closest with matthew. you had visited him in calgary a few times, but hadn’t spent a ton of time there while he lived there. when he told you he was moving to florida, you went with him, tired of being so far away from your best friend.
“it’s a country bar, i have to dress the part,” he argued. matty had shown you the arena, the house where he had lived when he was with the flames, and various landmarks around the city. the final stop on your tour was a bar that he insisted on dragging you to, despite your known aversion for country music.
“i’m not really sure it’s my scene,” you sighed, looking through your suitcase for anything remotely appropriate to wear tonight. it was surprisingly warm out despite being late in the evening, so you settled on some cutoff denim shorts and a tight, low cut t-shirt that showed off your cleavage. you got dressed in the bathroom of the hotel room you and matt were sharing, a little nervous as you looked at yourself in the mirror. over the years you had developed a small crush on the curly haired boy you had known for so long; and you secretly hoped he thought you looked hot as you adjusted your shorts one more time before heading back out.
“is this okay?” you asked, the way matthews breath caught in his throat as he turned around going unnoticed. his eyes traveled up your bare legs and over your chest before meeting your gaze, giving you a smile and hoping you hadn’t realized he was checking you out.
“you look great,” he smiled, and you felt a bit relieved. “now if you had some cowboy boots-“
“no way in hell. not even you could get me to wear those, matty. nice try though,” you laughed, pushing his chest softly as you walked by to put in you shoes. he silently wondered what you had meant by ‘not even you’, but didn’t question it, instead grabbing his red flannel shirt and throwing it in over his tshirt before following you out the door, trying not to think about how good your ass looked in those tiny shorts. maybe this wasn’t such a good idea after all, he thought.
to say you were nervous walking into the bar was an understatement, and while you had tried your best to dress the part, you were worried you would stick out like a sore thumb. you slid your hand into matthews, and his heart skipped a beat as he pulled you behind him into the building, and towards an empty table in the back. it wasn’t too busy thankfully, but there were some people dancing already, the sound of boots on the floor mixing with the music and chatter.
“relax, why are you so nervous?” he laughed at you from across the table, reaching his hand across the table to stop yours from shaking as they sat atop the wooden surface.
“i don’t know, i just feel out of place,” you admitted.
“just breathe. you know i won’t let anything happen to you,” he smiled, amused by how nervous you were over something so small. your heart skipped a beat, and you hoped you weren’t blushing too much; but who could blame you if you were, hearing something like that.
after you and matthew each finished a few beers and the bar filled up with more people, you felt surprisingly relaxed. what was not relaxing, however, was the way your breathing stopped everytime matt’s leg brushed against yours under the table; and you weren’t sure if he was doing it on purpose or not.
“do you trust me?” he asked suddenly, a mischievous sparkle in his eyes as the corner of his mouth curled upward. you nearly choked on your drink as he glanced over at the dance floor.
“not when you look at me like that,” you admitted, but let him take your hand in his and pull you into the floor. “matty i have no idea how to dance- nevermind this kind of dancing.”
“it’s easy. if i can do it, anyone can,” he smiled. you were thankful to be off to the side of the dancefloor, with little chance of running into anyone as matt’s hands landed on your hips, his fingertips cold as they brushed against your skin where you shirt had ridden up slightly.
his breath was hot on your shoulder and he stood behind you, guiding your body forward to the music.
“you just step like this, and then to the side, tap your feet together, then step back,” he instructed, showing you slowly what to do, before the two of you repeated the steps together. “and then, when you step back this time, you can add a spin.”
your hands landed on his chest as he spun you around, and his arms circled your waist as you looked up at him. his blue eyes seemed darker thank usual as he stared down at you, but maybe it was just the shadow from his hat. did he always smell this good? you asked yourself, the close proximity allowing the scent of his cologne to reach your nose, and maybe it was just the alcohol talking, but he smelled like heaven.
“think you’ve got it?” he asked under his breath, both of you unable to break the eye contact.
“no,” you muttered. “show me again,” you requested, turning around and placing his hands back on your hips, sliding his fingertips ever so slightly into the waistband of your shorts.
“fuck,” he breathed out, so quiet you almost didn’t hear it; but you did. matt walked you through the steps again, this time leaving no space between the two of you, allowing you to feel him pressing against your backside the whole time. he spun you around, this time pulling you flush against him as you wrapped your arms around the back of his neck, your lips just centimetres apart.
“now what?” you asked, barely above a whisper as your chest rose and fell, the room suddenly feeling very warm.
“kiss me,” he requested, his eyes half lidded as your leaned up to capture his lips with your own. your mouths moved together, his tongue running along your bottom lip before slipping into your mouth as he held you tight. he groaned as you tugged at the curls that peeked out from beneath his hat at the base of his neck, before you both separated to catch your breath.
“do you teach all your dance partners that part or is that just me?”
“god, just you,” the words melted off his tongue as he kissed you again, biting at your bottom lip gently. “you have no idea how long i’ve wanted to kiss you.”
“maybe as long as i’ve wanted you to?”
“i don’t know - is that a long time?”
“yeah,” you breathed out as he kissed your neck. “matty-“ the words caught in your throat, your train of thought lost as you realized he had defiantly left a hickey below your jawline.
“do you have any idea how hot you look in those shorts? the light bouncing of your skin?” he whispered.
“i wore them for you,” you replied, suprised at the confidence you were finding. things were always easy with matthew, your friendship coming so naturally; you had a bond that nothing could ruin.
“jesus, you’re gonna get me into trouble.”
“why’s that?” you asked, looking up at him, barring your eyelashes innocently.
“because we’re in public right now, and i’m finding it really difficult to not rip those fucking shorts off you right here,” he admitted, his voice low.
“so take me home.” his eyes closed for a second, before he grabbed your hand and walked you back to your table of empty bottles and threw enough cash on the table to cover the tab three times. you couldn’t hide the smile on your flushed face as he dragged you out of the bar, his other hand calling an uber with his phone.
matthews leg shook the entire ride back to the hotel, which while in reality was only about ten minutes, felt like about three hours. his hand rested on you thigh, his calloused fingertips tracing little shapes on your skin. while still being careful not to hurt your wrist, he pulled you quickly out of the car after paying the driver and his lips were on yours the second the elevator door closed.
“matty, someone could come in any second-“
“don’t tempt me, i’ll hit the panic button and stop this damn thing-“ he nearly growled, his teeth nipping at the skin below your ear.
“relax, baby - we’re almost there,” you murmured, but silently wished that the elevator would speed up. the two of you stumbled down the hall to the doorway, matt unable to keep his hands off you the whole time, pinning you against the door as he fumbled in his pocket for the key card.
“you’re making it really hard to focus right now….” he groaned as you left a trail of kisses up the side of his neck, the door finally opening behind you and allowing matthew to push you backwards into the suite.
“is that the only thing i’m making hard?“ you asked, palming his length through his jeans that had become significantly tighter, and he nearly whimpered at your touch. usually it would take more to get that kind of reaction out of him, but you had an effect on him like no one else ever would.
“don’t tease-“ you interrupted him by connecting your lips again, trailing your hands up his chest and sliding the flannel shirt off his shoulders and letting it fall to the floor. his hands slid under your t-shirt and pulled it over your head. he took his hat off and placed it atop your head before attaching his lips to your collarbone, his hands reaching down to undo your shorts.
“you want this, right?” he said, his hands pausing as his eyes met yours, both of you breathing heavily.
“please, matty-“ you pulled his pelvis against yours by his belt loops and he groaned, his head falling back as his eyes closed and his mouth fell open slightly. “i need you.”
you helped eachother out of the rest of your clothes, tumbling to the bed with your lips still connected, hands wandering all over. you rolled on top of matt, straddling his lap as you admired how messy his curls had gotten from your hands tangling in his hair.
“what’s that song called again? save a horse, ride a cowboy?” you teased, and he smiled, sitting up and holding you in his lap, placing a kiss on your lips.
“i thought you didn’t listen to country music?” he smirked, adjusting the cowboy hat that still sat on your head.
“i’ve heard one or two songs in my lifetime,” you smiled as he kissed you deeply, tossing the hat aside as he rolled on top of you.

Are you having your fun?
Shawn Michaels/Bret Hart, Shawn Michaels/Hunter Hearst Helmsley
Heartbreak Hotel AU
Chapter 2
[Ao3 link]
He was the first one Shawn really cared about.
The Heartbreak Hotel’s proprietor stared at the name on the page of the check-in book. Each page had a different name. Shawn couldn’t explain it, but he liked to keep each guest who signed in separate. The history of his past affairs were his and his alone to know.
Soft fingers traced the letters of that name.
B-R-E-T H-A-R-T.
Bret Hart.
He had been mysterious. Mistrusting, at first, and Shawn found him plenty annoying. But still, the two of them felt linked. Being with Bret was the first time Shawn felt alive. No one else before Bret made him feel that way.
Bret was a lot of firsts. He was the first to stay more than a night. He was there for a week. That was one of the best weeks of Shawn’s life, but he didn’t even know how many weeks he’d been around. It was all fuzzy to him. He was just…here. It felt like he’d been running the Heartbreak Hotel for years, and at the same time just for a handful of days. Shawn wondered a lot of things. Was he here because he died? Was this Hell? Maybe it was somewhere in-between Heaven and Hell? He joked to himself that he should’ve listened to his mom when she told him to pray more, but he wasn’t even sure if he had a mother.
Bret had stories. About his mother. And his father. A whole big family made up of sisters and brothers.
He remembered Bret rolling up in that slick, black muscle car. Dark tresses and pink tinted sunglasses. Stress showed itself on his face in the form of fine lines and wrinkles. He was a man of few words, but there was an accent there. Shawn remembered his voice clearly.
“You’re not from around here, are ya?” Shawn had asked, not really knowing where ‘here’ was.
“No.” Bret hadn’t seemed all that interested at first.
“Where you from, handsome?”
“...Alberta.”
“Canadian, huh? Don’t think I’ve gotten many of those…” Not that Shawn knew for sure.
That first conversation didn’t go far. Bret was standoffish, grumbling his answers. Shawn chalked it up to tiredness. After all, who wouldn’t want to talk to him? He charmed plenty of guests with his voice alone.
Somehow, Bret had managed to actually lock the door to his room. Shawn had been upset and confused about that. He spent minutes trying to open the damn thing, trying his own keys. Keys that worked in the past, to gain access to the honeymoon suite. Keys that didn’t do anything but open the door to the honeymoon suite.
Eventually, Shawn gave up. As he was throwing his hands up and walking away, Bret opened the door. He’d asked Shawn if he could help him.
“Ah…no, just came by to check on you, sir.” Shawn rolled his eyes, popping the gum he had been chewing.
Bret had pulled off his sunglasses. It was the first time Shawn would look into those dark eyes of Bret. There was a flash of something there that went away pretty quick. It sent a shudder down the blonde’s spine when he recalled it. The same way it had when he first saw it. It felt like his eyes pierced right through him.
He remembered feeling stunned.
“Well, I’m fine. So goodnight.” Bret spoke after a moment, closing the door and locking it with a click again.
Shawn remembers the frustration he felt. To this day he didn’t know how Bret locked the door, but he had also learned more about the Hotel in that time. Maybe the Hotel didn’t want Shawn in. It didn’t want Bret on that first night for some reason. Maybe because Bret would’ve skipped out as soon as he could if Shawn slept with him right away?
He sat there, at the hotel front desk, face in hand as he leaned on the desk. Marty’s departure had left him feeling a storm. Even now, the weather outside was gloomy. Shawn didn’t know why memories of Bret were hitting him so hard today, but it felt like the only thing calming him down.
Bret didn’t check out like Shawn thought he would. He extended his stay by another day. Maybe it was because he got some good sleep, but he was a lot more sociable that second day. He had alluded to being on the run, needing to hide out. It was all coyly said. Shawn found it thrilling.
“So it’s really just you out here?” Bret had asked, stopping by the lobby for the third time that day.
“Yep, just me.” Shawn nodded. The weather outside was late spring-like. Sunny, warm, just enough of a breeze. Shawn had popped the windows open, the smell of blooming flowers wafting through the lobby.
“I see. It’s a nice place. Quiet.” Bret remarked. Shawn had wondered why he’d been lingering around so much that day. It became pretty clear later that evening, when Bret invited him to visit him in the honeymoon suite.
“You’re pretty eye-catching, you know.” Bret had remarked, lounging on the heart shaped bed. Shawn had been sprawled out against the side of the bed, mostly on the floor. His arms had been folded up on the edge of it as he peeked up at Bret. It’s how Bret had wanted him, apparently. On the floor. His fingers idly played with the short velvet trim of the bedding. Hand selected by him.
He had stared at Bret, who had stared right back.
“Thanks.” The blonde responded after a beat. He didn’t know what to make of Bret at the time.
Maybe he still didn’t.
Their night ended like that, too. Shawn on the floor for Bret. It felt good. On his knees for this mysterious man.
The man who praised him and petted his hair all night.
Hunter was finished eating breakfast, and bored. Shawn was who knows where, and Hunter was hardly let out of his room without Shawn’s accompaniment.
He knew it’d make Shawn mad, but he couldn’t help it. His ankle was finally feeling better. He didn’t feel so…so damn out of it.
Determined, Hunter got dressed in some clothes Shawn loaned him. Jeans and a t-shirt, clothes he felt out of place in but it was all he had. It was this or the silk robes, and while he normally loved silk…it was uncomfortable.
There was something almost perverted about wearing Shawn’s clothes though. The scent of rose laundry soap hung on to the shirt, and Hunter huffed in the scent as he brought the collar of the shirt up to his face. It was a strange feeling. Worn cotton that felt out of place with the upbringing he had. It reminded him of when he was much, much younger, before he had to refine himself. Playing with his cousins, wearing hand-me-downs and running through mud.
Hunter gave a deep sigh, stifling his tears. He wouldn’t cry. He wouldn’t cry. He wouldn’t–
Enough of that.
Hunter pushed the door open.
He couldn’t help but be surprised at how…nice it was outside.
It wasn’t like any motel he’d stayed at. It was more like a hotel, funnily enough. A beautiful marble fountain stood in the center of the parking lot. It wasn’t with any fancy statues or anything, but white marble and some of the clearest water Hunter had ever seen. Taking a few more steps out, he saw there was a pool not too far off from the parking lot. It looked inviting, like he could strip himself bare and step in and it would be happy that he did.
Hunter clutched his head. These thoughts were so strange, he didn’t even know what to do with them. It was like if he acted on them he’d be rewarded, but they went against everything Shawn had asked of him.
He stepped onto the asphalt of the parking lot, down pristine birch wood stairs. Not a grain of wood was out of place thankfully, or else he’d probably have a few splinters in his feet. The asphalt itself was warm but not hot, and a refreshing breeze passed by Hunter. Partly cloudy skies overhead, and the temperature was moderate and comfortable. It was all perfect.
Further, he stepped towards the fountain. He reached its edge, looking down into the crystal clear blue water. His reflection waved in the ripples of the splashing water into the main basin. If it had been still, it could’ve been mistaken for a mirror. There was a tuft of black hair next to him and he stood up straight with a start.
He stood up with a start, looking over at a woman who was now sitting at the edge of the fountain. She had a Virginia slim in-between her fingers. Her lips were painted perfectly red, her cupid’s bow accented by the matte color on her lips. A heart was painted on his face, outlined by rhinestones. She looked tired, beyond herself. Dramatic, dark but glamorous makeup around her eyes and penciled in thin eyebrows. A white evening gown that looked almost like a very chic wedding dress, with a slit up to her thigh bedazzled with crystals. It was unlike any dress Hunter had seen, and even his own mind failed to understand how something so simple could appear to be so beautiful. It was a contrast to the woman’s quaffed hair, full of hairspray to keep its shape and her complex expression that Hunter couldn’t fully read.
“Who–”
“It doesn’t matter who I am, sweetheart,” she started, inhaling from her cigarette. The orange-red burning tip flared as she did. The woman held her breath for a few moments, before letting out a smooth and steady stream of smoke. Even the scent of burning tobacco and tar was whisked away by the breeze. “But you can call me Sherri.”
“Okay Sherri…” Hunter started. “I didn’t know there was anyone else here.”
“I’m not exactly here.” Sherri turned her head to look at him, slumping forward to reaching her face down to her free hand and holding it there. Her smile was sad. There wasn’t a better word for it from Hunter’s perspective. Just sad.
“What do you mean?”
“What do you think I mean?”
Leaves rustled, green and lush around the property.
“This place feels unreal,” Hunter said.
“It is,” Sherri said.
The man understood, but he didn’t. He knew it was too amazing to be real, but it was real the way a nightmare felt real. Blurred lines of reality in the space between just waking up and having your foot in the door of the realm of sleep.
“You should go now, Hunter,” Sherri continued.
“Why?”
“Shawn won’t be happy to see you out here.”
“I…don’t…”
Before Hunter could finish his thought, there was the bang of a screen door opening. Shawn stood outside the main office, eyes wild as he began approaching him.
He turned to look at Sherri, but she was gone. There was a single glass crystal in the fountain, turning and tossing under the falling water from the higher tier.
Shawn ran up to him. He was dressed down. For himself, at least. A red and white checkered shirt that looked like a picnic blanket. He was in jeans, perfectly tight, and cowboy boots. Brown leather with white stitching and tips.
“Hunter! What are YOU doing out here?”
“I–” he didn’t have a chance to explain himself before Shawn grabbed him roughly by the wrist and dragged him away from the fountain.
“You need to be resting. Didn’t I tell you to stay put?” Shawn chided, like he was scolding a child and not an adult man. “I don’t want to have to put locks up but I will.”
“Locks?”
“It’s for your own safety! I mean you shouldn’t try to get around too much on your ankle. We don’t even know how bad it is.”
“Then we can get it checked out at a hospital.”
Gray clouds began to roll in as the wind went from pleasant to chilling. Hunter shuddered, now cold in his shirt and jeans. He stood on the stairs, wrist still in Shawn’s hand, when the rain came pouring down.
Shawn was under the awning that covered the door to his room, protected from the rain. His eyes were piercingly cold.
“Let go of me Shawn.”
“No. You have to get inside, now.”
“I’m leaving.” Hunter tried to tug his wrist away, Shawn only doubling down by grabbing it with his other hand as well.
“No you’re NOT. You CAN’T leave, I WON’T LET YOU,” Shawn was practically yelling.
Hunter pulled harder, grabbing onto the railing for support. His bare feet were beginning to slip on the wooden stairs, as the rain poured down by bucketfuls.
“I. Want. To. LEAVE.” He managed to tug his hand free, watching horror cross Shawn’s face. He didn’t realize he was falling until he felt the ground fully slide from under him, crashing down onto the parking lot’s asphalt. He felt his head bounce against the blacktop, his back thudding down after it.
“HUNTER!”
was the last thing he heard before he blacked out completely.

i wish you would write a fic where sort of exes leon and matthew (they hooked up plenty but never talked about it, it fizzled out drama free post-trade) reunite in their 40s as coaches/scouts in the DEL
oh GOSH being coaches of rival teams would be such a compelling rehash of the by then long past battle of alberta rivalry! but i also love the idea of them being thrown together working for the same team! so many tasty options. i think if i was gonna write this i’d want them to be working together rather than revisiting their rivalry … or maybe leon’s coaching and matthew’s bouncing around doing euro scouting for some nhl team so not really rivals but matthew is maybe trying to poach leon’s best players. hard to begrudge the guys for wanting to play in the nhl, especially the kid who’s playing up with the senior team and is staring down a pretty good draft spot. at least matthew can’t poach that one yet.
anyway maybe they end up skating together a couple times, just for fun, shooting the puck around a bit. but matthew’s mostly not there, he’s all over germany and also sweden sometimes, denmark a lot, you get the gist. always gives leon a heads up when he’ll be back in town. leon has no idea why he’s scouting in europe when he could be scouting in the us, some cushy job where he bounces around the midwest watching high schoolers, not sleeping in hotels in cities where he doesn’t speak the language watching twenty five year olds who might never crack the nhl.
and then they fall in love. and matthew tells him why :)

The Beast of Little Hope
Set in 1992 the clarke family is a pack of werewolves, over a decade prior a teen Hector Clarke was bitten by the Beast of Arkansas and while the family worked to keep him inline they all fell under the curse over the years except Megan who has made it her duty to protect her family. Hector doesn't speak much since the death of their father Clarence one full moon.
The question of who is responsible is unanswered and intentionally kept secret by Megan to prevent the fallout within the family, Hector blames himself regardless and feels a lot of guilt surrounding his family's curse and exactly how he can end it and so he stays close to his sister who has really done the work to become somewhat of a monster hunter although due to the nature of things most of her methods were focused a around non lethal approach and you best believe she's decked out in silver.
After a horrific accident and a lead on the Beast who started this whole thing the family splits as does the au
The first part is Hector and Megan's trip to Arkansas to track down Sherman. It's at this point that I'll clarify that I'm going for a contextual control method of lycanthopy were there's enough room for feral wolf stuff in the backstory but in general Hector can use his abilities to assist as much as possible on their road trip. Megan is determined to break this curse no matter what it takes…
Mean while the family remaining family consisting of James, Anne, Dennis, Tanya, Vince and Anthony travel to Alberta Canada to live in isolation until the curse is broken. They set up on mount Blackwood(the Washingtons and their lodge aren't there yet) and make the old hotel their home, their current condition makes them more equipment to handle this survivalist tale but they are not alone on the mountain…(there is of course a certain man with a flame thrower for one)
For further information Ages in 1992: James 64 Anne 63 Tanya 43 (Vince is similarly aged) Dennis 41 Anthony 39 Manny 36 Megan/Jack32 Hector 27
There are other elements at play that I'm holding off on telling for now but expect to hear and see more once I got these werewolf designs figured out 😉
Also the title is both a play on the beast of Arkansas and to be read as "the beast" as one might reference a type of thing like "the wolf" when talking about all wolves as a species and "of little hope" as "with little hope" positive or not it means refer to the situation of all the characters(especially when they're very much away from little hope)
I honestly thought this would take more words but I'll certainly have more to say when I can articulate it right

CBS Ghosts - Hello! - The Ghosts’ Solution
The ghosts are elated that Sam can see them and try to figure out the best way to get Sam to not open the hotel.
Spoilers may happen.
Discussion and Gifs below:
Tumblr media
I love that Isaac’s just like “Okay, Troops” as if they’re his army under his command.  It’s especially funny in a few gifs.
Tumblr media
LMAO - Thor: Unknown waters are dangerous - unless Cod and Hetty starts off like “Yes, he must know - he’s a traveler” then two seconds later - “Damn it with the cod!”
At this point, Hetty (like the four older ghosts) have heard about Thor fondness for Cod for over a century and it’s like hearing my dad’s stories about the marines - fun at first, now boring.
Anyway, I love that she makes the same face EVERY time she hears it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I love that these four are just looking at him like - WHAT?  Why are we listening to this man?  Also, going to note Trevor’s sitting position because damn - how long did it take him to learn how to sit so he’s covering himself.
Tumblr media
Isaac’s a humble bragger - or just a bragger.  He’s just like “Yes, I’m awesome” - oh Isaac, you forget who you live with.
I do like that Pete’s just intrigued like “Oooh, interesting.”
Tumblr media
I LOVE SASS - OMG!  Isaac’s bragging (and perhaps Trevor, Flower and Alberta haven't heard this bit before) until Sass goes “you’re a dumbass - you didn’t win, you surrendered.”
I love how Trevor and Flower slowly turn to Sass like “did you really just say that?”  It’s interesting because this tidbit reminds us that Sass was THERE when Isaac’s life was happening and WATCHING.  I like to think that Sass pulls shit out of his ass - half true, half untrue - just to mess with ‘the Captain’ Isaac.  They’ve lived together WAYYYYY too long.
Also, love Alberta’s little laugh.  It’s so fun seeing their reactions.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
LMAO!  This is SO FUCKING FUNNY.
Isaac - it worked!
Sass - yeah but you died two weeks later.
Isaac - it worked, damnit!  That was the point.
It’s just so funny because Sass is clearly having NONE of bossy Isaac and sassing him (pun intended) and Isaac just - doesn’t know how to deal with that. It’s like he’s not used to this despite the fact that he’s been living with Thor & Sass for 250 years.  Like - dude... you should expect this.
IDK I love it because it makes me wonder how they survived the last two centuries with each other or it’s like brotherly teasing at this point.  Either way, FUNNY.
Also - they all know you’re good at talking, Isaac, they’ve heard it a lot - they’ve LIVED (Afterlived)? with you for YEARS - Centuries in Sass’ case.
Tumblr media
I love that Thor & Hetty are next to each other in this scene.  Just because Thor is SO FREAKING EXTRA and Hetty’s like - you have a point until - Woah there buddy!
Like she probably agrees with him until he goes a step too far and then she raises her hands as if to stop him gently.
Also, does anyone else wonder if Thor isn’t interested in talking because he was abandoned?  Like maybe the 500 years he lived alone made him more bitter and violent and unwilling to compromise or talk things out?
Tumblr media
LOL - I guess we know who Alberta struggles with at times - Thor, which makes sense because he’s very violent at times.  I love how she looks at Sass&Flower like “You two should be able to calm him down.”
I wonder if they’ve ever talked about that / used Ghost Court to make him chill out - I mean, it’s not working, but...
Sass looks so over it - he’s been with the guy for 500 years, so at this point...
Flower’s like “let’s change the subject”...
Also, Trevor’s just like a puppy - he’s looking at Thor & Hetty concerned and then at Alberta like “Oh, yeah, something should be down about this.” and back at Thor & Hetty like “well, not me”.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Flower’s on the side of keeping the livings - probably because their afterlives have been SO boring, while the older ghosts argue otherwise.
This is very interesting - Thor, Isaac, and Hetty are hardcore against the livings staying because “they’ll be overrun” BUT Sass seems indifferent, while the younger ghosts are game for it.
Just like in the pilot, no one’s stances have changed.  This is interesting because Hetty seemingly grew attached to Sam in the day she was there, but it’s also possible that Isaac got in her head about the hotel.  Not that Isaac’s manipulative, but Hetty (aside from in DP) pretty much defers to men - particularly Isaac, in the first season.  She doesn’t really start to realize that she can and should voice her opinions until the Vault, which is a turning point for her.  Although there was leadup to that moment - standing up to Elias was HUGE for her.
Anyway, I digress.  You can see that she’s obviously been listening to Isaac because of what he says next.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is an important piece of dialogue.  Why?  Because Sass’ sass of Isaac earlier was just funny in a brotherly - we’ve lived together way too long way - but HERE is where Sass shows that YEAH, he’s learned to live with Isaac, but he has a rightful chip on his shoulder given that Isaac was fighting for the right to be a country from the people who invaded Sass’ people’s land and took it from them.
I really wish the show went into the likely underlying issue with Sass & Isaac - if I recall correctly - we rarely see these two alone together.  They certainly don’t seem to be close or even all that friendly at times.
Given that we later learn that before Pete died, no one compromised on anything and they fought ALL the time, you have to wonder if this was and still is a problem not yet, resolved.
Speaking of Pete...
Tumblr media
He’s SO USED TO STEPPING IN AS A MEDIATOR that he jumps in before Isaac can even think of a response - we don’t even see Isaac’s non-verbal reaction because Pete jumps in so quickly.
Also, I wonder how long he’s been thinking about this?  Since the scare?  All night?  During this convo?  He seems very well prepared.
Finally, it’s a great idea for peaceable way solve the problem.
Tumblr media
Awww, of course the youngest is the first to be like “Yes - this is awesome”.  He says he likes it because ‘hot chick stays’, but I also think he just likes the idea that they would be less bored with young livings around.  He’s quick to learn their names AND he mentions “No hotel” because he knows that he should agree with the older ghosts’ opinions that hotel is bad.  Personally, I could see Trevor loving the “hotel” since it would bring life and fun to the house he’s been stuck in for decades - totally bored.
And naturally, he agrees with Pete - who was the only one to side and support him when Hetty accused him of murder.
Tumblr media
Awww, I love that Alberta ponders the possibility and then sides with Trevor - and HE’S SO HAPPY.  He’s like “yes, I have a buddy”.  We don’t see much of Trevor & Alberta, but I can imagine as the 4th youngest (and therefore on the young side) that she bonded with him more than the older four despite being with them longer.
Also, it’s interesting that it appears 4 vs 4 - young versus old.
Sass is the only one to not say one way or another what they should do or if he sides with youngest or oldest ghosts, BUT in a future Episode he says that he “Always takes the opposite of Trevor’s Side” so we can assume that he’s with the Oldest ghosts.  And in order we have the 3 older/oldest ghosts say negative - Flower start the positive train and now Alberta’s saying it too.
It’s so fun!
Also, he fist bumps her shoulder and smiles so happily at her as he listens to her discuss the positives.  :)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
OOOOOH!  Okay BIG SPOILERS HERE:
DAMN HETTY - you’re HARSH here.  You could just let it go, you could just support her but you KNOW she was murdered, Hetty!  You were THERE and know who did it!  Like WHAT???
Honestly, the gaslighting here is SO HARSH and unnecessary.  Why are you protecting them???? Imagine if this had been the thing that kept Alberta from being sucked off - that would be TERRIBLE.  And even though it wasn’t... to possibly be the reason Alberta’s stuck...
Ouch.  Anyway.  I’ll probably keep track - how many times does this come up and how many times does she attempt to gaslight Alberta into believing otherwise?
Also, one other note - why the F does Alberta WANT to be murdered?  Who wants to be murdered?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Okay, some notes here:
Alberta, there’s nothing wrong with heart attacks.  Okay, your Buddy there next to you died of heart problems... he’s literally SITTING next to you and you’re like “I’m not that lame” WOW, Alberta.
Second, Trevor’s gone from smiling and happy to concerned about the fighting to looking at Alberta go on about how ‘lame’ heart problem deaths are somewhat tensely - upset.  Knowing how he died makes (as mentioned above) this statement kind of callous.
Now, the interesting thing about this is that his death is only ever mentioned 1 time.  During Trevor’s pants.  He, unlike Pete, Flower and Alberta (the youngest ghosts), never talks about his death.  And seeing this - that look on his face as he looks down at her as she talks about how her death had to be better than that - had to be the reason he never talks about it despite claiming that it was a party and he was legend when it happened.
I would give Alberta a pass for ‘potentially not knowing’ because she wasn’t there but neither was Hetty and Hetty’s the one to make the statement that ‘his heart exploded’, so they DO KNOW.  So, no pass Alberta.
Third, Hetty like ruffles herself weirdly when Alberta goes into her “my death rocked” theory, and it’s only been a theory for 90 plus years, which intrigues me.  Is it because she knows that Alberta’s right?  Is it because Alberta’s doing that thing that the older ghosts get annoyed by (the talking / joking about their deaths) that the youngest ghosts minus Trevor do.
OOOH, interesting - he’s the ONLY one not to of the four youngest main ghosts...  Is it because of this Alberta/Hetty exchange?  Could he feel like it wasn’t fun or cool enough to talk about?  Aw, poor Trevor.
Sorry, he distracts me.
Lastly, is PETE.  As we see below - he is once again the peacemaker.  We don’t know if Hetty had another retort, but what we DO know is that Pete jumps in quickly - just like with Isaac/Sass - and offers some comfort.
What’s interesting about this comfort is that, at first, it seemed obvious that he was comforting Alberta about the possibility of her heart attack being her death, but NOW, I'm thinking - he’s offering TREVOR comfort.  He wants TREVOR to feel less sad about his death, since he went from smiling and happy to upset at the topic.  Trevor’s only been dead 20 years, so maybe he hasn’t gotten to the whole ‘mock my death’ part of accepting death like Alberta, Pete, and Flower.
OOOOh, could that work???
There’s stages of accepting ghost life / your death.
1. Don’t Talk about it - even though you’ve accepted it.
2. Joke about it because well, what else can you do?
3.  Refuse to acknowledge it unless you have no choice.
4. Accept it but don’t go out of your way to bring it up.
Tumblr media
Ah, Pete, making jokes about the arrow.
Tumblr media
LMAO. FLOWER!  WHAT???  Sass is so like ... these dumb idiots - why am I stuck with them?
Tumblr media
LOL - Pete’s like “Uh, the Fuck question is that?” - Okay, he’s nicer than I am about it, but he’s like “Hello, obvious!” LOL.
ANYWAY.  End of this scene!  It was fun - I didn’t realize how much I could about just one scene but there was a lot of little tidbits about the characters in just the one scene that make A LOT more sense given the future episodes and how things tie together.
I love it.  Anyway, this was fun (I feel like Tigger)
Tumblr media
please feel free to reblog and come talk to me about this! :)  OR Send asks :)
THanks!

CBS Ghosts - Hello! - The Game Has Begun!
Warning Spoilers May Appear.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
First question - how do they decide who does what when? Why Pete first? Did he introduce himself? Also, why not Isaac? Why not Trevor?
I'm surprised Pete's so gung-ho about this.
Like clearly Sam's struggling, and he's just like "I got the silent treatment all the time - so I got this."
Why, Pete? It's weird because he's TYPICALLY the one that's called 'a saint of a man' and 'the best of all of us' and 'the most pure and innocent', but he's literally helping to torture Sam here. It paints him in a shade of gray that I really like. Because there HAS to be a reason that he stayed as a ghost and honestly, he's the hardest one to figure out WHY he's staying. For everyone else it seems a little more certain. Although ... nah, I'll get to that later.
What's also interesting is what we learn in just two sentences.
He was married for 16 years. His marriage was bad - especially if he was used to the silent treatment. And he's gleeful about bothering Sam, who just wants to live her life.
Tumblr media
LMAO - Thor's contribution is to just yell "death to you" from a closet - wow, Thor. Wow. Maybe he figured that his curse would be enough?
BTW that would scared the crap out of me for sure. I'm terrified of things popping out at me.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Okay, let me get this straight. Jay knows what's going on and asks "is it getting better" and she says "no" and his SOLUTION is to go to sleep?
Jay, what the hell? "I'm sure it'll be better tomorrow - will it, Jay? Will it?"
You're not being helpful, Jay - you're lucky you're amazing otherwise.
Also, Alberta is STILL going on about her murder and this actually pretty funny considering. Do ya'll think that when she first died, she ran through her suspects with the other ghosts? Do you think she talked about it nonstop? Do you think she WANTS to be murdered PURELY because she was trying to deal with her death? I think so.
Wonder how Hetty felt about that.
No wonder the other ghosts are just like "ugh." They're just like over it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Alberta, don't you sleep?
Also, imagine laying in bed, trying to sleep and just listening to this woman - the only one to introduce herself as far as we know - just gleefully talking about her murder and how she was cheating with some woman's man but that can't be the reason she was murdered because she didn't know so it doesn't count.
This makes me feel less bad about her boytoy cheating on her because she cheated, too. Of course, given her murderer... I do feel bad again.
On the other hand, I love how she's just like "it doesn't count" - lmao, Alberta. It still counts, I promise.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Okay this is the STUFF OF NIGHTMARES.
I constantly freak out about finding someone suddenly in my room while I'm sleeping. Especially right when I wake up and especially when I've sleep paralysis and can't move. Anyway, you suck, Sass.
Screw the gasp, I would've started Screaming and I wouldn't have stopped.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Okay, Sass. If you really think that this is 'scary', WHY are you doing it? And can you imagine waking up and not being able to go to the bathroom since he followed her in there for toothbrushing? Also, did Sam CHANGE in front of Sass? Or did she ask him to leave her alone for five minutes? I need to know.
Also, we learn about Sass here - he hates and thinks being a ghost for Eternity sucks. Which makes sense because it's been over 500 years (the flashback in his episode later on shows a 1513 date).
He also lives for some kind of entertainment. Hence telling Sam about the drama he creates. It's pretty funny actually and I kind of love it. Drama king!
And he's very aware. "I will take to my grave - which will never come - hence why I'm bothering you."
Sam just walks away.
Poor Sam - I'm surprised she doesn't insist on going to a hotel or something. I would.
Feel free to chat :)

Any headcanons about how many homes America and Canada have?
Yes! They have many homes.
⭐ America ⭐
In New York City, America spent decades jumping from place to place. As the city grew, he moved from a house in Manhattan, to a Brooklyn apartment, to a flat in Queens, etc. Now, despite his best efforts, his current apartment is just a box with an AC unit sticking out the window. He wishes he could have a nicer place in NYC, but the market is too hot even for him.
In Los Angeles, he managed to snag a gorgeous Santa Monica house in the early Hollywood days before prices exploded into the stratosphere. Just a short walk to the Pacific ocean, he never sold it and it’s worth its weight in gold by now.
His spot in Washington D.C. is the one he most uses; a stately, historical home that would probably be turned into a small museum if he ever decides to sell it (but he never will). Sometimes, the place can get a bit messy, with papers, file folders, and take-out containers scattered about, but he’ll tidy up when company is coming.
A farm in Ohio that has seen better days. In the early 20th century, he used the barn as a workshop to tinker with automobiles and flying machines. As a result, the barn is quite damaged, but America won’t repair it. He thinks the oil stains “add character”.
A lively hotel in Louisiana with a restaurant on the first floor. Yes, he owns the whole thing. It’s been managed by humans for generations within the same family. They cook massive Creole feasts whenever America drops by.
America doesn’t seek solitude often, but when he does, he goes to his mountain home in Colorado.
He stubbornly hangs onto his Texas ranch even though he doesn't raise cattle anymore.
Once he owned a beachfront property in Florida, but sold it after the Cuban Missile Crisis.
Unfortunately, through no fault of his own, his childhood home in Boston caught fire after the Revolution and burnt down. The land it was on is now a popular public park with swing sets, monkey bars, and a huge curly slide. Many local children say it’s their favourite park in the city.
There are many more, of course, but those are some of his standout homes.
🍁 Canada 🍁
Of all his homes, Canada stays at his Ottawa house most often. The backyard is filled with a rainbow of tulips and it’s within cycling distance to Parliament Hill. He keeps several pairs of ice skates for himself and whoever visits during the winter, so they can go skating over the frozen Rideau Canal.
Canada’s Toronto flat is the most modern-looking of his dwellings, but that isn’t saying much. It’s an industrial loft with mismatched furniture still stuck in the 1980s. It really isn’t his favourite place, but he likes the view of the skyline at sunset.
One of his childhood homes is still standing; a humble, stonework Montreal house. It’s been restored by historical societies; fresh paint on the door, a tidy lawn, and black soot swept away. He made an arrangement to lease it as a museum, but has the opportunity to return and stay there whenever he chooses.
There’s a ramshackle log cabin he built himself in Algonquin park, many years before it was designated as parkland. To quote my NedCan fic: “... a stone base decorated in moss. Turn-of-the-century windows and an amber-stained porch pleasantly frame the main door, while the modernized roof and chimney stack create a mishmash of different eras... like a favourite worn blanket; too beloved to be discarded, and so instead is repeatedly patched.”
On the east coast, he has a home in Halifax proper. Sadly, his original was destroyed in the Halifax Explosion and was rebuilt to the standards of the 1920s. He misses his older house, because it was where Scotland would visit during his childhood.
In St. John’s, he has a very colourful building, painted bright red with white window frames and small gardens in both the front and back.
A simple, suburban bungalow in Red Deer, Alberta. Perfect for business and relaxation, because it’s halfway between both Edmonton and Calgary and keeps the Rocky Mountains within reach. Piles of hiking gear are stored in the attic, basement, and the garage. When he can spare the time, he’ll drive out to the Rockies for weeks of camping, climbing, hiking, or skiing.
His British Columbia home is surrounded by old-growth trees.
Overall, Canada tries to have at least one home in each of his provinces and territories. If, at the time of travel, he doesn’t, he'll try to lodge in a wildlife research centre. The scientists, who usually work for the government, don’t mind his presence at all.
Thank you for the ask!! 💜

THIS WEEK'S QUESTIONS:
What's the deal with the short ties in mid-century movies? Some of them appear to be only 10-12 inches long.
Jay and Connie, Ann Arbor
In my opinion, the countries with the strongest cinematic noir traditions are France, Japan, the U.K., and Mexico. Do you agree?  I'd love to hear the two of you discuss each of those four noir traditions (plus others if you'd like).
Kathleen from Chicago
Have you been to the Hollywood Museum on Highland Ave. in L.A.?
Alan, San Anselmo, CA
SUMMER OF DARKNESS introduced me to Eddie Muller. Eddie, how did you get involved with this? Did you have any connection to TCM prior to that Summer?
John Weber in Tampa
Can you tell me why NOTORIOUS is no longer shown on TCM? And the wonderful film noir, SLEEP MY LOVE, will that ever be shown?
Jenene
What are your favorite noir-fusion genres and which films do you consider definitive examples of a noir Western, noir science fiction, etc.?
Brett, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada
STAIGHT TIME with Dustin Hoffman and Harry Dean Stanton-noirs often glamourize criminals and heists, but this seems very realistic. What’s Eddie’s take on the film and both these actors.
Brian in Toronto
In Walter Mosley's EVERY MAN A KING, TCM gets a mention as do the following:
THE BRASHER DOUBLOON. Any thoughts on the Chandler book or the film?
A character is described as Sydney Greenstreet on steroids. If you were to name your Mount Rushmore of Sydney Greenstreet movies, which two would you add to the obvious choice?
Oliver mentions Steve McQueen's last movie, THE HUNTER. I would like to hear your opinions.
Joe from Suffolk County, NY
A few months ago, Eddie was traveling with Tizzy, which got me to thinking about the difficulties/practicalities ...Did Tizzy go on an airplane? Stay in a hotel room? (Hotel bar?)
Sue, San Francisco
How do you think it would go if James Ellroy and Hunter S. Thompson found themselves seated at a table in a small room together?
Bill, Pleasant Hill, CA
Eddie doesn’t seem to care for in-depth academic studies of Film Noir and prefers a historical and production emphasis for such studies. If this is true, what is it about those aspects of an academic intellectual approach to Film Noir that rings hollow to you?

WIP Intro: Steel Horses and Hot Irons
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As requested by @tea-and-mercury, i am writing up a wip intro for the big ‘un. 32k words deep as of writing this. Sooo:
Genre: Action
Setting: South USA, Arizona-Texas-Nevada area. The Mojave, pretty much.
Tropes: Bigass guns, physics that doesn’t really get addressed, a whole bunch of mental illness (poor Becca), romantic sideplot, big plot twist, secondary antagonist scarier than the primary.
Tag (so i can see it): #STHI (it’s gonna work a bit like a signature for me)
Imma just put the prologue and the character work i did in because it’s just that much easier.
Prologue
5 years ago, 2035, the atom bombs were dropped. First at the USA, then Afghanistan, Russia, China, most of the EU, France shone like a strobe light before the nuclear power stations finished exploding. They all fell in the face of nuclear armageddon. All that was left were craters, rubble and uranium. A few survived and began reclaiming the barren, toxic wasteland. In Utah, there was a lot of this. The Krugers, based in Arizona, were dangerous and silent assassins that disappeared into the night when they left. The Mob, the surviving criminals from the surviving prisons. The lowest of the low and barely organised. The Survivors, who can walk off just about anything and were mostly left alone by everyone else. Wandering bands of close friends also formed, finding work as hired guns.
The Motliest Crew were renowned the best. A group of 5; 3 men, 2 women, all balls-to-the-wall insane. They had no known names, only specialties. The Marksman, Rebecca Johansson “Pew.” A sniper who allegedly never missed a shot, but was very shy, anxious and probably depressed. This is to be confirmed as there are no therapists left in Arizona, or in Alberta, Canada. The Scout, aka, Sorren Clark. “Keep up, $#§/stain.” A speedster with a mouth and a shotgun, one get’s him into trouble, the other get’s him out. Not the most useful combo in Australia, but out in the wastes, invaluable. The Brawler, aka, Claudia Vander. “I’m gonna punch him.” A large frame packed with muscle and grit hailing from South Korea and California. Her fighting skills are near unmatched.
The Demolitionist, aka, Callum Henderson. “I had a dog and his name was… Bingo!” A drunk, black, tartan-clad Scotsman with a grenade launcher and a rocket launcher. And a claymore, he has a sword too. The Gunman, aka, Rasputin Romanov. “Shoot first, ask question while reloading. Spetsnaz 101.” A man of few words and a Spetsnaz soldier from Russia, with a really heavy accent and a really heavy gun.
Each of these wandering guns-for-hire wore a face mask or helmet to both obscure their identities and filter the noxious cocktail of chemicals in the air in some places. They were all armoured to various degrees with assorted run-down military kit that had been scavenged. The Gunman was clad in hulking Juggernaut military gear, the Demolitionist in assorted pads and plates, the Scout in Moto leathers and a bulletproof vest, the Brawler wore similar kit to the Scout and the Marksman was in ill-fitting, minimalist spec-ops kit. Minimalist because only a third of what they found came close to fitting her. Each suit was tailor-made (except the Marksman) by it’s wearer, each adding their own personal flourishes and decorative elements, like sketchily-woven tartan, tally marks, oil crayon, the works.
Now, the character work i did (and added):
Rasputin and Becca:
Callum, Sorren and Claudia split up to go and have fun, leaving Becca with Rasputin. They sat in the hotel room, looking at each other quizzically. Becca had curled herself up in a blanket nest across the room from Rasputin’s massive frame that was posted on a bed, leaning into the wall, staring blankly into the space between air molecules. He looked around, registered Becca’s comfort ball, cracked his back and shifted his posture to something more relaxed.
“So.”
“Mm?” Becca mumbled from her nest, poking an anxious head out into the dim light.
“Why are you hiding?”
Becca paused in thought, eyes darting from Rasputin to the floor, to the roof before finally talking, her own indecision caving to his patience.
“I’m worried.” She whispered into her blankets, “I’m worried about them.”
“Hmm. In Spetsnaz, we had a good cure for worries. We would sit and talk about worry. You want to try?”
“Mhm” she slowly heaved her miniature frame out of the blanket nest and towards Rasputin, who lay down on the bed fully, shuffling along to make space, further dwarfing Becca. She curled up next to him, heart rate going from cardio to moving. Listening to his huge heart slowed down hers, his relaxed body position relaxing hers. There was a security in being so close to something so large, like swimming with a whale.
“So. Why are you worrying, Becca?”
“I- I’m worried for Callum and Sorren and Claudia. I don’t know what might happen to them. Even if I was there with them, I would just slow them down, but I like knowing where they are so that I know they can protect me if they have to.” Rasputin’s huge bald head turned around
“I will tell you this, Becca: I have protected all of them before. I can protect you.”
“There are monsters out there than can hurt them?”
“But none them can hurt me. I am Russian. I am Spetsnaz. Nothing hurt me.” Rasputin’s gravelly, broken English was somehow comforting.
“Really?”
“Da.”
Callum:
Another cold, dark night came as the red sun plummeted below the horizon. In the town, there was a bar. A man sat alone, at the end of the bar, drinking from a flagon of foamy beer and people-watching and checking his watch, waiting. For something or someone to spur him into action. Tick. Tick. Tick. Tick.
An hour passed and he finished his beer, ordering another from the barkeep. The night crept on fruitlessly for the man. The stream of people coming in and out slowed to a trickle as he waited in the dark bar, wooden flagon in hand, beer getting colder, patience wearing thinner. Finally, one man entered who caught his attention. A tall, burly figure with a tartan kilt and sash over his impressive armour and helmet. The man held himself proud and tall, confident in himself and his abilities, but not arrogant. He walked with a muted swagger as he progressed to the bar and made his order, shifting the claymore on his back to avoid the seat. Some whiskey or other on the rocks. He had an enormously Scottish accent and as he removed his helmet to drink, it was revealed that he wore an eyepatch and had a nasty burn scar plastered on the left side of his face, sprawling under the eyepatch and barely visible in the shadow.
The man stalked forwards silently, sitting beside the Scotsman without making a single quiet sound.
“So, is it really you?” The hooded man had a smooth, melodious voice, with a noticeable Mexican accent.
“Who’s really who?” Callum replied, unflapped by a stranger randomly appearing beside him. In the better light, the man saw belts of grenades wrapped around the scot’s waist and bulges from beneath his sash.
“You. Are you really the famous Callum Henderson? Legendary demolition man for the Motliest Crew?” The stranger’s voice somewhere between admiration and mockery.
“So tha’s what they’re callin’ us. ‘The Motliest Crew.’ ‘Bit demeaning, no?”
“Not at all. I’m a huge fan of yours. I’ve been watching your antics for a while now and i was wondering if I could get an autograph?” The strange man spoke from beneath a hood, eyes glinting red in the gloom, a crocodile grin on his face as he reached i to his poncho and coat,
“Aye, sure. Tell me where tae sign.” Callum turned to get a pen from his pocket and when he turned back around, a tattered, sun-bleached “wanted: dead or alive” poster of him was placed on the dark wooden bar. The wind whistled as the man tapped the ‘dead’ part, “Just here, please.”
“Yer a bounty hunter, eh?”
“I am. One of the best, too. The Wolf of District 13.”
“So, wolf, is this the best yeh have? Vague, indiscernible threats and uncanny looks?” Callum replied, showing no fear of the man beside him, as he downed his scotch, putting a 5€$ bill beneath the glass. The Wolf chuckled for a second, before going dangerously calm, retreating into the dimly lit bar and drawing himself up to his full, enormous height.
Cybernetics whirred to life from beneath the wolf’s poncho and hood, as his eyes glowed red and a hiss of steam whistled from his elbows. Callum stood, grabbing his sword, “So this is how yeh wannae do this?”
“Yes.” Hissed the wolf, as his mechanical legs grew a third joint, making them look like the legs of a wolf, lean and strong and good for chasing. Callum stood, taking the poster to inspect it. He looked for a while, put it on the bar, signed it, pocketed his pen and walked out of the bar. The Wolf lowered his guard in disbelief, hunching back over to examine the wanted poster. He had circled “Dead” and signed it at the bottom. The wolf finished his beer and sulked off into the night, after paying his tab.
Claudia:
The Wolf of District Seven stalked down the back alleys of the Last City, following the cheering to a dingy looking warehouse with lights and shouts coming from within. Loud, aggressive music blasted from huge speakers, the bass shaking the walls. The Wolf entered the building by walking through the front door guarded by bouncers without being noticed at all. In the centre of the building, a ring had been made, inside of which, there were two fighters. One was a large man with massive arms and cybernetic reinforcements on his elbows and shoulders and he wore brass knuckles on his ham-fists and a metal plate on his jaw. The other fighter -the Brawler- was a smaller woman with broad shoulders and strong, lean arms. Claudia was still tall, but this other fighter was massive, yet her confident stance, and side-guard indicated extreme proficiency in her trade. The large man wore brass knuckles, she wore steel boxing gloves haphazardly manufactured from scrap sheet-metal and cast-iron.
The man brought a standard boxing guard up and his opponent steadied herself before bouncing on her toes. The large man angled himself to his opponent and swung a huge haymaker which was caught by the woman, pinned to her side and she started slamming him with crushing blows to the liver and ribs. Each blow made a cracking and a clanging as steel smashed bone. With one final powerful uppercut, she released the mans arm and slammed him in the chin, knocking him unconscious before he hit the cold stone floor.
The Wolf came through the crowd without detection or suspicion of a tall, hunched figure in a black poncho and hood hiding the figure’s face. She called into the crowd, “Who’s next? C’mon, dude! It said fight ring on the poster, not warm-up gym!” The Wolf took his chance and approached Claudia, weaving through the crowd, “I will fight you, if nobody else wants to, that is.” The Brawler looked at her new opponent, weighing up the fighting skills of this strange hooded figure, “Bring it, big dude!” she tapped her chin with her glove, taunting the Wolf. “You know, I’m a big fan of you and your crew, Brawler. Before we start, can I please get an autograph?” The Wolf asked, crocodile grin spreading beneath his hood, red eyes catching the light as he withdrew a pen and wanted poster from the folds of his poncho. His metal limbs glinted in the spotlight, clawed steel fingers on full display. He handed her the pen, “Just here please.” He tapped under ‘DEAD’ in ‘Dead or alive.’
Claudia signed the poster in pen before she realised what it was, stepping back as she realised, “Trying to bring in the reward money?”
“Have to make a living somehow. It’s not personal.” The Wolf removed his black poncho to reveal a body made mostly of metal and machine parts. Steam hissed in the shining pistons operating the Wolf’s arms and legs. Guards were raised and it began.
The Wolf dropped low, correctly anticipating a jab to the face, claws grating on the cold stone floor. “Slow.” He cackled with glee, swerving past a knee aimed to the gut and sweeping the supporting leg from below her. “Sloppy.” He taunted from behind Claudia as she got up and readied herself to fight properly. He took the next punch that came for him, a misdirect left hook into an elbow to the chin and a slam to the ribs. Both massive blows made a sickening clunk as metal was slammed together violently. “Weak.” Growled the Wolf, as steam hissed. Before she could process it, the Wolf’s metal fist was an inch before her face, and promptly slamming hard into said face, pushing her backwards. The next blow came before she was done staggering. A monstrously powerful ridgehand to the lower back, snapping the Brawler back up, only to take a huge uppercut to the liver and a sweeping kick to the back of the knee, bringing her down into a spinning back kick. She was out before she hit the floor. The Wolf drew his clawed hand into a stabbing blade, winding up to deliver the killing blow, before the referee stepped in, stopping the fight. “That’s enough. You’ve beaten her, prize ‘s in the pot.”
“Fine. I’ll take your bribe, but that doesn’t pull her bounty off the board.” The Wolf growled, cursing under his breath as he left the dingy arena.
and finally, Sorren:
The Wolf of District 13 sat at the end of another bar with another mug of beer. The MotoGP was on the TV, engines roaring through the abused speakers. One man sat watching, he had a beer in his gloved hand and a confidence in his demeanour. “I know you’re there, mate. I’ll get to you when Ducati finish this lap in first.” The Scout waved a hand in the Wolf’s direction, before retreating it and sipping on a gin. The Wolf stared in awe and bitterness at the scout’s arrogance, he had never been dismissed by a target before. Ignored once or twice, acknowledged every time, but never dismissed. This was not going to fly. The Wolf advanced silently towards his quarry, making no sound, red eyes glowing with malice. The Scout waved his hand again, tutting. “No, I said I’ll get to you in a bit. I keep my word. Sit back down, finish your drink, and put the knife away.”
“And if I don’t?” The Wolf muttered under his breath.
“Them you’ll go down in history as the most boring assassin ever. If you want to kill me, you’ll do it on my schedule.”
“Idiot.”
“No, you idiot, I’m reckless. The difference being one is being thick as bricks and the other is having no regard for your own safety.”
The Wolf was a very patient killer, he would wait for days for his quarry to show themself, but after 5 minutes with this intolerable little man he had very much lost it. He went in with his knife and went straight for Sorren’s spine. He missed the spinal cord because of the Scout’s impossible reaction speed, but instead his blade was buried in his lumbar.
“Ouch. Welp, I’m off to die somewhere pretty. See you in hell.” Sorren groaned as he got up from his stool, blade still stuck in his back, and walked out of the bar bleeding everywhere, hopped on his motorbike, and caned it back to the Hotel California deep within the sprawling city.
-end-
Btw i got more wips to do more intros on, since you’re so desicated and insist on reading to the end of these :3

BC fires update
Hi all, here's a quick update on my travel plans; although my storytelling still has me in Saskatchewan ready to cross into Alberta, I'm actually already in Nelson in Southern BC. Been traveling a lot and seen/done amazing things so I'm a little behind! 🙃
As you may be aware, there are currently terrible forest fires across all BC including a few big ones near Kelowna and Kamloops, where I had planned to travel to in the next week. Although I have full belief that the government & wildfire services would keep me safe, it doesn't feel right to continue traveling as if nothing is happening... roads are being closed on short notice and hotels are filling up with people evacuated from their homes, so this is really not my place to be. The smoke has been bad on & off the last few days - there was some blue sky & mountains to be seen yesterday but then today it's really bad with ash covering the car. Not fun camping but honestly the smoke is everywhere including in the restaurant I am now.
All that to say that I'm canceling my plans to travel further west to the Okanagan and Haida Gwaii, which I had been really looking forward to (since about 14 years!), and instead am returning to the Rockies and Alberta where there's also fires 😞 but less.
Not all is bad; I had one of my best experiences in Canada 2 days ago soaking in a natural hot spring next to a glacial river deep in the forest, keep meeting very friendly people everywhere and am already planning my next fun things to do.
I'm sure I'll come back to this region as it's stunning, but in the meantime there's still a lot of Canada on my way back home in the next weeks that I'm looking forward to explore!
Hug, Fleur

Sunday
Really, really long drive today. Over 500 miles to Dinosaur Provincial Park in Alberta.
At 3:52am, I woke up to catch a glimpse of the sunrise. At 4:55am, I did Wordle and thought about getting out of bed. I don’t know how well I would do in the land of the midnight sun.
Tumblr media
3:52am
Tumblr media
4:55am
The Delta Hotel did well by us. We had a very nice suite, access to the concierge lounge, and complementary breakfast. All those days of business travel still pay off when traveling outside of the USA.
As we made our way out of town we passed Rothwell Street and saw a gray partridge running through a parking lot. How could the day get any better!
Tumblr media
Need I say more…
We drove an hour down Trans-Canada Highway 1 and stopped in Moose Jaw to check out the town. Sunday mornings is not the best time to see how vibrant a town might be. Needless to say, it was dead. However, we could see that there was a lot going on in town. All the storefronts were full, there were plenty of bars and restaurants, just nothing was open on Sunday at 9am.
Tumblr media
Quiet Sunday morning in Moose Jaw.
We rolled down the highway.
Next stop was Swift Current for lunch. Then we passed through Medicine Hat. Along the way, the flat farmland of Saskatchewan turned into rolling hills. Then it flattened a little as we came into Alberta. We saw mule deer, pronghorn, and the occasional suicidal rodent. We saw miles of rapeseed (canola), legumes, oats, and other crops. We saw major mining operations, miles of power transmission lines, pump jacks, solar panels, and windmills. And we saw cyclists miles from nowhere riding bikes that were fully loaded with gear. Those crazy cyclists!
Tumblr media
The yellow crop is rapeseed (canola).
Tumblr media
Pump jack.
We rolled into Dinosaur Provincial Park around 4:30pm. The Park is actually in a canyon which was a surprise to us. We were driving along and suddenly dropped a few hundred feet into the park entrance and visitors center.
Tumblr media
Dinosaur PP behind us.
The park is wide open for exploration. The areas on the fringes the park are restricted to authorized persons due to the abundance of fossils. Before we leave, we have a tour within the restricted area!
The campground is quite active. The park as a variety of programs for visitors, especially kids. We sat in on the Dinosaur Trivia contest which was fun for all ages.
Tumblr media
Our campsite.
Dino-trivia.
Another positive, the Canadians are really very friendly. We’ve spoken to several people, many noticed our NC tags (license plate). Our neighbor is a paleontologist who previously worked in the park, for example.
Asleep before sunset…
