The Lodge At Métis Crossing Mass Timber Win Project
One of the three recognized teams of Indigenous peoples in Canada, Métis people have a combined Indigenous and European ancestry that advanced through the fur commerce and result in a definite culture and a language known as Michif. The huge animal is casually munching the grass in his new home, a 380-acre wildlife park set within the low rolling grasslands about eighty kilometres northwest of Edmonton, Alberta. He and the relaxation of the 15-member herd seem oblivious to the precise fact they've made history; their September arrival marked a hundred and sixty years because the final plains bison freely roamed these hills. This 512-acre site is located on Métis settler homesteads overlooking the banks of the scenic North Saskatchewan River. Metis Crossing resort in saskatchewan The Lodge places a high worth on the reality in materials and is designed to mirror how Métis individuals constructed and lived traditionally and how they continue to innovate in a contemporary context. No design element was deemed too insignificant; each detail was chosen with the aim of conveying a distinctly Métis cultural and historical character. Many of the wood design choices, such because the dovetail joint and post-and-beam details, are harking again to the area’s authentic buildings, which embrace fur trade-era homesteads and trappers’ cabins. Her innovative initiatives and inclusive approach have propelled us forward, making her a beacon of inspiration within the realm of cultural preservation and revitalization. This esteemed award not only celebrates our commitment to sustainability but additionally highlights a outstanding partnership aimed at rejuvenating an important grassland ecosystem. In a symbolic gesture, it welcomes the return of heritage Bison species to the very lands where Métis ancestors once thrived, hunted, and lived. To complete Lodge or Cultural Gathering Centre bookings or schedule a Signature Experience, go to the web site at metiscrossing.com. Program info and ski path conditions are available here as nicely. And though the varied Peoples who had relied on them persisted, the near-extinction of the bison — one of many largest and most fast losses of a important trade in the continent’s history — has had lasting impacts on Indigenous Peoples. I grew up figuring out that I was Métis, however I truly have solely simply begun exploring my Métis heritage and studying concerning the culture. When I spoke with Meyers about it her eyes lit up when she stated, “This is just the beginning of your journey — you’ve received an thrilling time forward of you.” As I left Métis Crossing, I knew she was proper. “The bison will come inside a number of feet of us if we play nation music,” Hrehorets said as he turned up the radio. Slowly, he drove us closer to the bison, windows down so they may hear the music. The herd of plains bison curiously perked up and allowed us to get extremely shut earlier than they jogged in unison to the other aspect of the large subject. The Métis developed a novel political and authorized tradition with strong democratic traditions, including elections of buffalo councils for organized buffalo hunts. THE FUR TRADE The history of the Métis is entwined with the history of the fur commerce, both as origin and as livelihood. HISTORY “Métis” means an individual who self-identifies as Métis, is distinct from other Indigenous peoples, is of historic Métis Nation ancestry, and who is accepted by the Métis Nation. Through her unwavering commitment to preserving and sharing the Métis culture, Juanita has significantly benefited our community. Every side of their way of life was depending on the buffalo hunt. If fishing was out there in the area, it was additionally a major source of food for the Métis folks. They have been eaten alone or added to a dried preserved meat known as ‘Pemmican’. Dried berries and pemmican have been saved in animal skins to forestall them from going unhealthy.Bannock – The Métis ate a lot of ‘Bannock’. Bannock was a mixture of Scottish bread and Indian fry bread that could probably be baked in an oven, cooked in a skillet over a hearth or fried. The advantage of Bannock was that it was straightforward to make, transport, lasted a very long time without spoiling and was quite filling. Over at Cape Hopewell, wander the Hopewell Rocks, 600 million years old, and—if you dare—kayak amongst these astounding geological formations after dark—and at excessive tide—with Baymount Adventures. Overnight guests can camp in traditional trapper tents or mattress down in style on the Métis-designed 40-room boutique lodge, opened in December 2021. Beginning summer time 2023, novice astronomers will be capable of contemplate the celebrities from the comfort of their beds in the new sky watching dome lodging. Traditionally, the Métis had been hunters and their way of life largely revolved across the Plains buffalo. We enjoyed a traditional bison stew with bannock for dinner, had a peaceable evening within the lodge, and a hearty breakfast the following morning. On our second day, we enjoyed the snowshoe trails, cross-country ski trails, and the sledding hill. We ventured next door to the spacious cultural gathering centre, the place we spent a couple of minutes soaking within the architecture and the Indigenous artwork. Though the constructing is large and fashionable, it hints at the conventional style of the fur commerce period and was designed by a Métis architect. A massive stone hearth sits in the middle of the constructing and supplies a cushty area for small teams. The centre, which is ready on the banks of the North Saskatchewan River, offers visitors insight into who Métis individuals are and the way their tradition arose. Smoky Lake’s Pumpkin Park options massive concrete pumpkins that make for the proper cease to take a photograph with these well-known large pumpkins. The Park can be considered the launch level for a lot of planning an adventure down the famous Iron Horse Trail. Even though the recessive genes in the herd of white bison on this park are deliberately chosen, it feels very particular to see them. You get to know all of these vegetation when you’re out on the trapline, explains Danielle. The process of laying out the traplines in patterns, coming again to examine what you’ve caught, re-laying the traps, takes days. There are lots of completely different creatures to be trapped, muses Lilyrose, looking up at the sky as she lists off what she calls the “long hair.” Squirrel, fisher, wolf, coyote, lynx, pine marten, wolverine.

When Waskahat was released on December 11, police issued a firestorm of public notices warning that  they had “reasonable grounds to believe [he] is of significant harm to the community” and is a risk of committing a sexual offense against a child under the age of 16." This is something prison abolitionists conviently forget about. Sometimes people should be locked up for the safety of the community
By Anna Slatz. December 15, 2023
Content warning: this freak abuses very young children
A violent transgender sex offender with a history of making toddler sex abuse material was released from prison on Monday only to be re-arrested days later on new offenses. Laverne Travis Waskahat, 47, had accumulated a trove of baby-related items and sexual drawings of children in the 72 hours he was in the community.
Waskahat has an extensive history of criminal activity dating back years in the province of Alberta, with almost all of his convictions relating to child sexual abuse. According to the Edmonton Police Service, Waskahat has a history of possessing, making and publishing child pornography involving male and female infants under three years old.
Waskahat has been known to offend against the children while in a position of care over the child and has also been known to take voyeuristic photos in public of infants. These photos were often taken in publicly-accessible bathrooms, such as in malls and grocery stores.
When Waskahat was released on December 11, police issued a firestorm of public notices warning that  they had “reasonable grounds to believe [he] is of significant harm to the community” and is a risk of committing a sexual offense against a child under the age of 16.
But Waskahat’s freedom didn’t last long, and he was re-arrested on December 14 after failing to notify his parole officer of his whereabouts.
Tumblr media
In a media statement, Edmonton Police revealed they had received a tip that traced Waskahat to a hotel room in the city’s West Side. At the time of his arrest, police found a baby crib, diapers, dozens of alleged pornographic drawings and a laptop in Waskahat’s room.
He is now facing new charges of making child pornography and possession of child pornography.
Past public information notices on Waskahat reveal the extent of the conditions he has been subjected to, speaking to the severity of his risk to public safety. Among the conditions, Waskahat was subjected to a 10pm to 6am curfew, a total ban on possessing devices that accessed the internet, a ban on consuming pornography of any kind, and a ban on viewing any photos of children whether explicit or not. Due to his history of grooming, Waskahat was also prohibited from entering into a relationship with a person who had custody of a child under the age of 16.
In 2019, Waskahat was convicted on three charges, one of which involved accessing pornography of infants in diapers. At the time, he had just been released from prison after serving a sentence for producing and possessing sexual abuse materials involving infants under the age of 3.
According to news reports released at the time, the charges had initially been entered in court using “male pronouns” that were “updated” after Waskahat declared his status as a “transgender woman.” Subsequent police releases on Waskahat referred to him using “she/her” pronouns.

Hello again! Question for Edward and Calvin. With HBO's The Last of Us set to wrap up location shooting soon, I figure now's a good time to ask what you two thought about all that entailed? And on a related note, what do you think about the recent spate of big productions choosing to film in Alberta?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(as usual apologies for the belated answer!)
full disclosure I have not watched (or played) TLoU but two of my friends were working downtown and peeking at the film sets while they were in Edmonton filming episode 2 and excitedly relaying pictures!
There is an interactive map displaying all the filming locations in Alberta for the series as well.
Pedro Pascal also had some very nice things to say about Alberta... although the production designer was shocked at how clean the province was compared to the US (and therefore how difficult it could be to make things look run down!)
The other films that were in progress in the province at this time included: Under the Banner of Heaven, Fraggle Rock: Back to the Rock and Ghostbusters: Afterlife. The films have all been a huge boost to local restaurants, hotels, and other businesses... but sometimes it can be frustrating always having to pretend to be somewhere else, most of the time an American city...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Of course, this is just part of a long history of Alberta as a filming location and there are lots of places to visit in the province. For some reason this list doesn't mention all of the Christmas movies that get filmed in Edmonton... or the one time we actually played ourselves in a movie...

“like a bookmark in my heart”
so they hook up once, at the all-star game. well, hard not to. in person, when they're not battling it out, matthew is young and brash and surprisingly funny and unsurprisingly attractive, and leon knows when he's been an asshole unfairly (even if he doesn't know how to admit it out loud). also knows how to read an offer. pretty easy, in the end, to head back to the hotel together. they have a good time.
and then they don't do anything like it after that. sure, they play hard, chirp each other, all the normal stuff, but like, matthew doesn't seek him out again, and leon doesn't offer, and it's fine. it was one night, and it was a good night, but that's all it was.
time rolls on. the oilers beat the flames and then get swept. matthew goes to florida. they don't have each other's number, or anything. matthew's friendly enough at all-star games, but then again, he's friendly with everyone until puck drop.
they lose in the second round. leon gets dealt to the east somewhere, one of the only guys without a total nmc. hurts to get pushed out, pisses him off, actually, but lights a fire under him, too. so he didn't win with edmonton. he can win here. he loves connor, but maybe this is a chance to prove his worth on his own.
a run of decent seasons with his new team. couple second round exits, couple conference finals. he's dating, ready to be settled. gets married. gets divorced a few years later. no one's fault, but it doesn't make things easier. he's trying to put down roots, but it's been hard going. he wants a cup, and he wants to feel like he belongs in a place, and lately he hasn't felt that way. it's been a few years. he's ready to move along.
florida's interested. they got to the cup final leon's last season with the oilers, lost in a heartbreaker. lost some guys after that, but kept most of the core. matthew's still there, because of course he is. leon doesn't know the guy that well -- swapping blowjobs in a st. louis hotel doesn't mean much -- but it makes sense to him that matthew would settle here. he looked better with a tan than he did with chapped lips from alberta winters. there's questions, about if they'll play well together, but it's different without the battle to make things sharp. matthew's a friendly guy. leon thinks he can make it work.
barkov is there for the press conference, obviously, but matthew is too. welcomes leon to the team and sounds like he means it, makes a crack about leon having to wait his turn for an A. it's all friendly. collegial. easy, easy. leon was right to think he can make it work.
and that's all it is -- friendly, teammates, everyone was right when they said matthew wasn't so bad -- until it's a month or two into the season, and they're at a bar, and leon looks across the table where matthew is laughing and the light is just right and something he'd buried so deep that he thought it was dead blooms in his chest and cuts off all his air, and oh, shit. maybe once wasn't enough.

Note: Eddie will not be able to answer questions posted during the livestream nor ones left on our social media accounts
THIS WEEK'S QUESTIONS:
What's the deal with the short ties in mid-century movies? Some of them appear to be only 10-12 inches long.
Jay and Connie, Ann Arbor
In my opinion, the countries with the strongest cinematic noir traditions are France, Japan, the U.K., and Mexico. Do you agree?  I'd love to hear the two of you discuss each of those four noir traditions (plus others if you'd like).
Kathleen from Chicago
Have you been to the Hollywood Museum on Highland Ave. in L.A.?
Alan, San Anselmo, CA
SUMMER OF DARKNESS introduced me to Eddie Muller. Eddie, how did you get involved with this? Did you have any connection to TCM prior to that Summer?
John Weber in Tampa
Can you tell me why NOTORIOUS is no longer shown on TCM? And the wonderful film noir, SLEEP MY LOVE, will that ever be shown?
Jenene
What are your favorite noir-fusion genres and which films do you consider definitive examples of a noir Western, noir science fiction, etc.?
Brett, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada
STAIGHT TIME with Dustin Hoffman and Harry Dean Stanton-noirs often glamourize criminals and heists, but this seems very realistic. What’s Eddie’s take on the film and both these actors.
Brian in Toronto
In Walter Mosley's EVERY MAN A KING, TCM gets a mention as do the following:
THE BRASHER DOUBLOON. Any thoughts on the Chandler book or the film?
A character is described as Sydney Greenstreet on steroids. If you were to name your Mount Rushmore of Sydney Greenstreet movies, which two would you add to the obvious choice?
Oliver mentions Steve McQueen's last movie, THE HUNTER. I would like to hear your opinions.
Joe from Suffolk County, NY
A few months ago, Eddie was traveling with Tizzy, which got me to thinking about the difficulties/practicalities ...Did Tizzy go on an airplane? Stay in a hotel room? (Hotel bar?)
Sue, San Francisco
How do you think it would go if James Ellroy and Hunter S. Thompson found themselves seated at a table in a small room together?
Bill, Pleasant Hill, CA
Eddie doesn’t seem to care for in-depth academic studies of Film Noir and prefers a historical and production emphasis for such studies. If this is true, what is it about those aspects of an academic intellectual approach to Film Noir that rings hollow to you?
Conrad
