I’m seeing some drama pop up around the new event concerning Rollo, I hope the fandom will act maturely and not to blow things out of proportion this time around.

Ask 3: On a separate note, the amount of discourse surrounding him has the fandom divided and it’s kinda funny (as long as we’re not harassing anyone over diff opinions). Like some ppl love him and some hate him. My only thing is that bc he hasn’t done anything diabolical to warrant any major hate from me so he’s cool, and idk if ppl notice but twst characters are not direct copies of the villain they’re inspired by. They take notable characteristics sure but for some they change it up so much that they have two different characters. Hades is outwardly confident and has not problem socializing w ppl, now compare that to Idia. They’re pretty diff with the only exception is that they can talk fast when they want and are cocky, but w Idia it’s in spurs. Also with Vil, they were able to make a pretty static, run of the mill Evil Queen villain into a hard working, role model-esque celebrity. Either way his uniform be popping off and I would not mind wearing it. Plus their school get nice magic rings so that’s a win too.

Ask 4: tho most of the fandom, so far from what ive seen, has just been headcanoning him as a ripoff scaramouche from genshin - violently cold, the grinch, a highschool mean girl, homophobic (thats a meme i think), and aggressively catholic (i dont disagree with that due to what villain he's based on but no way to know for sure just yet). all that. like stereotypically those themes, despite us not even having a proper introduction from him yet/not having seen enough of him to see how he's truly like (we only have a few frames, non translated i dont think). the fandom just see's 1 pic of character with a frown/neutral expression and goes wild with it.. which makes me kinda sad :( just cuz their based on a villain doesnt mean their batshit evil- that goes for a lot of the cast already.

Putting the last 2 asks as text here since they are both part of much longer asks that I want to give a separate post to respectively.

Since the next part is coming out today and I have some time on my hands, I think it’s about time I give my thoughts about the elephant in the room regarding Rollo. I think the discourse died down a bit for the time being, but with the next four parts that will still come out from today till November, it's not impossible for it to revive depending on what happens next.

To sum up what has been happening in the fandom, there are a lot of mixed responses with TWST Frollo becoming real. Some are very excited about this, but others are uncomfortable due to the racism that Frollo aims at the Romani people. A few Romani people on Twitter have apparently spoken up about their sentiments and discomforts, and the discourse started from there. It doesn't help that the Kohaku article "The Disney Villains Game is Having a Horny Racism Controversy" fanned the flames further.

For starters, my stances and sentiments are very similar to @raven-at-the-writing-desk’s, which you can find over here. As the anons in asks 3 and 4 have stated, we don't know much about Rollo enough that we could make a fair judgment. Even if this event concludes in a month, I think we'll come out of it with more questions than answers since it seems pretty clear that he will make an appearance in main story (what with him having a formal introduction and an official voice). We don't know yet how much he'll resemble Frollo, nor do we know how much traits he'll share with Quasimodo. Something important to consider is that nobody in TWST is truly evil. Rather, they're people who have their shitty sides and good sides, who have made shit choices and good ones, and I doubt this will change with Rollo. All that I have to say on this matter is (a) to not define Frollo, and thus Rollo, for the racism they exhibit, and (b) to not jump into conclusions and assumptions about a character we barely know.

As for the racism, I think that the problem itself is not the presence of racism but how the racism is presented. It's one thing for racism to be presented. It's another thing for the racism to be glorified, and it's yet another thing for the racism to be condemned. If TWST glorifies Rollo's racism or even just ignores it, there's going to be a problem there. But if Rollo's racism is condemned (via the characters' disgust, etc.), then it will depict racism in a bad light. And so far, TWST has been pretty good with depicting that racism is a no-no, particularly with Sebek's way of talking to humans (Silver and Riddle would reprimand him for the way that he speaks. You can see this in chapter 5 and in Riddle's robe story). Either way, I believe that Frollo's racism should not be swept under the rug and should be something that is addressed here, especially considering the conflict that is being set up in chapter 7 with the whole fae vs humans thing.

I really do get the worries. Even I'm waiting for the next part with scrutiny because I want to see how they will handle Rollo. But I think we should be less rash about our judgments and see what happens first. Let's also be careful of where we get our translations from too since we do have some sketchy ass tlers around. If you need any clarifications on what happens in the event, ask any trustworthy tler or even me. But as the first anon said, I hope we're all mature about this and not blow things out of proportion. ^^;;

My problems with S3

Salty rant in no particular order below the cut

What the HELL happened to the Byers? They went from being the emotional heart of the show to literally having one brief scene together in ep1 and then Will and Joyce had a hug by the end of ep8, which btw Jonathan DIDN’T EVEN JOIN IN ON??? He was literally in the background in that scene, are you trying to tell me my boy Jonathan Byers would not come out to hug his family after all that shit they just went through???? Jonathan and Will spent like what, four episodes standing next to each other and they barely even exchanged a single line?? Not a comforting touch, a hug, anything??

The Byers’ financial situation and how that could’ve given them some interaction, weight to Joyce’s desire to move and also the Byers talking about that AT ALL was lying right there for the taking. Joyce and Jonathan both had obvious concerns about losing their jobs

Joyce got to spend time doing something else than worrying about Will this season which was nice (instead running after manchild Hopper, great), but where are the repercussions of that? With the growing up theme I was hoping for Joyce to start to look into herself, about letting go and who she is when she’s not a mom

Jonathan was once again reduced to being Nancy’s sidekick, spending most of his time following her around and standing next to her while she drove the plot forward with a vengeance. He spent most of his time in the beginning being an abrasive grump and his pov was barely there with the lack of Byers fam content, which made his argument seem as weak as it did in s2. His scenes with Nancy hit the ground running, were rushed and few and far between. As soon as Jonathan was not by Nancy’s side he disappeared entirely from the plot until she called on him again. He didn’t have one single scene without her

Nancy Wheeler would never, ever stoop so low as to mock Jonathan for a) his socioeconomic position and b) his trauma with his dad. A super ooc low blow. Nancy can obviously be ignorant about how economical strife affects others, but actively mocking him??? This is not the Nancy that approached Jonathan “the freak” in s1 and expressed her concerns despite the entire school side-eyeing her. At least Jonathan got to sass back at her later

Where was Nancy’s backstory that was hinted at before the season? Was hoping for her to get some development OUTSIDE of her rallying to save the world 24/7

Will starts out the season having a semblance of an interesting, very relatable arc (abandonment issues, afraid of growing up, done with The Straights) that then goes nowhere in lieu of The Plot and Will just... doesn’t have a lot of beef with the MF. This thing and the other monsters of the UD fucked him for life, let him have something badass to do like I dunno, give him powers you cowards, let him fight the MF you cowards

Also let Will talk to his family about his issues, or have it be a point that Jonathan is now busy with Nancy and how he misses him. Jonathan being somewhat conflicted about spending all this time outside his family and the potential guilt and effect that has on him. Will destroyed Castle Byers that he and Jonathan built together, where the hell were my brotherly feels???

There was a lot of talk about “new pairings” with the characters, but everything felt very same-y. Jopper goes off on their own, jancy does the same thing, El and Mike have a ton of screentime devoted to just them, Steve and Dustin amped up their bromance to eleven, etc. Even when characters that usually aren’t grouped together were in the same scenes, they barely got anything to say or do (Lucas being said to “become closer with Jancy” was a flat out lie or referred to literally physically standing next to them). Where was Nancy and Joyce solidarity, El and Will siblings, Mike and Nancy bonding over their family falling apart, Jonathan and literally anyone but Nancy?

Villain focus completely shifted from the US government to the spoopy, evil Russians with their spoopy language. Stereotypical, tacky and bland af. Being American is Great and in no way problematic! Go patriotism/capitalism!

The abundance of action and cgi. Omg all of the action sequences. It felt like 70% of the season was spent on El throwing shit around with her powers and Hopper fighting Russian dudes. I remember being halfway through the season and thinking they really should’ve slowed down the plot. But that’s an issue with too little time for too many characters. I had no time to bond with any of the characters I liked since the plots were So Big and So Many that they ate up every opportunity for emotional intimacy and reflection. We had time for a goddamn ad for coke but not for the Byers to interact like once???

Also the whole infection/MF working in the shadows thing? Completely wasted potential. It was set up to induce paranoia in the characters and the MF tricking, playing with and torturing them, people not knowing who to trust which could’ve lead to some really compelling scenes. Nope, it’s just a big meaty version of the MF and now it’s running around town trying to fuck El up while nobody conveniently notices and tons of people died but who cares

Robin was shoehorned into the plot and magically had all the skills it took to figure out the code, could decipher Russian with no previous knowledge (the languages she listed as knowing are not at all related to Russian and why tf does she know so many languages??). At least she slapped Stobin in the face and gave us some actual LGBT rep since the doofuses are hellbent on beating around the bush with Will infinitely

Erica was 100% SASS and nothing else. It got old really quick

The entire plotline with Steve/Dustin/Erica/Robin took up about 60% of screentime with memes and sassy jokes and provided about 5% of relevance in the grand scheme of the plot. Everything they found out in the Russian facility could’ve been relayed by the Russian guy Jopper kidnapped

Which btw, why did a random Russian dude take up that much screentime? He had way more emotional development than 80% of the core cast. Also did we need that much Murray?

Speaking of, I did not need Murray doing his creepy, invasive psycho analysis thing on Jopper like he did Jancy last season. It was terrible and lazy writing then and it’s terrible and lazy now

Steve complaining about popularity “not being that great really” made me want to punch him in the face even more than usual. Nobody gives two shits about a rich white boy who got everything he pointed at, all the popularity and more girls than he could count at school while stomping on the outcasts

Also didn’t need that jab at Nancy in his heartfelt scene with Robin (which was funny bc Robin has a lot of similar traits to Nancy)

Karen and Billy was gross, but at least Karen stopped herself to go back to her unfulfilling but legally sound marriage. No need to rock that boat unnecessarily! A completely mediocre man is just fine for her I guess. At least she got a kickass scene with Nancy

Why in the fucking world did Billy get as much screentime as he did. Why on earth did this asshat, racist abuser get some bs sob story about his awful childhood when we have 47 other, way more sympathetic and interesting characters that could’ve been explored instead. And then he did some stupid “grand heroic sacrifice”. I cried more when the Russian dude died

Max was a victim of Billy’s abuse for years which was completely undermined by her ooc constant concern for him and overblown grief at his death

El being oh so concerned about Billy when she knew he was the asshole who had abused his friends Max and Lucas (and beat up Steve) before felt really insincere

Hopper was a huge, loud, violent jerk this season and I’m not having it. I felt sorry for Joyce having to put up with him and then he presumably died heroically (??? he’s obviously still alive guys) and I...didn’t really care? Was kind of on the Jopper train but have no hopes for it now. Where was their supposed “history” together that was hinted at before the season? It just felt like Hopper constantly acting like a huge, controlling manchild and Joyce having to pep/comfort/discipline him. No sense of back and forth support

What the fuck was that music number with Dustin and Suzie?? Omg cringe. I could feel how the characters all died inside

On the subject of music, they stole Jancy’s theme song and gave it to Steve and Robin and then Mileven. Mileven also stole Jancy’s “I love you”, which was clearly hinted from the name of the song on the soundtrack titled “The first I love you”, which is literally a rehash of their theme “The first lie” in s2. A huge slap in the face to end the season with

i think i finally figured out the birthchart thing?? really cool and very defining for a lot of elements of character design. i'm a aquarius sun, scorpio moon, and taurus rising -- i'm ready to be judged - sirius anon

right!! it’s like a main priority for me in character building! ohoooo that combo is very interesting, because i feel like aquarius and scorpio are not really compatible, in that aquarius influence can make you very distant and unwilling to address your emotions and their importance, but your moon (which controls your emotions) is SO preoccupied with exactly that, which might exacerbate that scorpio intensity because you feel that constant pull between hiding and revealing your true emotions. but then taurus rising kind of balances it out and makes you at least appear to be level headed? so even if you’re suffering on the inside at least people think u got it all together.

He has white skin, which sometimes has bruises on it from playing hockey. He has freckles under his eyes, which are fairly light as well. Ike has blue eyes, that often have a hint of mischief or arrogance to them whenever he’s causing trouble. Which is a lot. They are fairly big as well, giving off an innocence he doesn’t have. However it’s fairly useful for getting out of trouble. He has a big nose, something he’s kinda salty about. His lips are always slightly chapped, and almost always seem to be in a smirk. Ike has messy black hair, no matter how much he tries to tame it, its like a mop on his head. It drives Shelia crazy, but he really can’t do anything about it. He’s constantly battling it away from his eyes, and has too much pride to accept a bobby pin from Karen.

As for clothing, Ike’s style definitely changes occasion to occasion. He can most often be found in just a T-shirt and jeans, with red converse. He avoids sweaters like the plague because that’s something that’s associated with the rest of his family. His attire is also dependent on how hard he wants to try. If it’s on one of the days he’s not trying, Ike can show up to school in a large hoodie and sweatpants. Ike is the type of person who totally owns weed socks, and other meme related clothing. But makes it clear that he’s only wearing it for satire or ironic purposes. Ike is also not a fan of tight clothing, because he feels like it restricts him in his movements.

 Personality:

Ike can often be described as, well, an asshole. He’s arrogant, as he frequently boasts about his intelligence and isn’t afraid to flaunt it in the face of others or use it to intimidate. He’s largely self centered, thinking himself as the center of the universe. It’s his world, and everyone else is just living in it. He feels responsible to ‘educate’ people if they are ignorant in his mind. He likes to think he’s very mature for his age, and in a way he is, in the fact that he gets and understands a lot of adult issues and knows how to act appropriately in public. And doesn’t have 12 year old™ behavior. Ike is very petty and sarcastic, he doesn’t take criticism well and lashes out. He’s defensive to a fault. He’s also incredibly flirty, especially with girls. To overcompensate of course.

Ike is intelligent. There’s no other way to describe it. He likes books that test his knowledge, tv shows that expand his knowledge and enjoys intellectual debates. Ike is a child prodigy, and has common sense for days. He has a strong thirst for knowledge, and is ruthlessly ambitious to achieve his goals. He’s good at coming up with convoluted plans. He shoots for the stars and by god he’s gonna get there. Ike has a caring side to him that doesn’t get shown often. Although he hides it pretty well, he’s sensitive and gets his feelings hurt rather easily. He’s courageous and extremely brave as well as loyal. You know the kid that argues with the teacher and entertains (or annoys) the class? That’s Ike.

In short, Ike is a little asshole. But he’s an asshole with heart.

 History: (At least three paragraphs)

Ike was born in Canada, as Peter Gintz to Eliza and Harry Gintz. He was born during the Cola Wars, and since his birth family couldn’t afford to have a child they put him up for adoption. He was adopted by the Broflovski’s and has been part of their family ever since. He was frequently babied by his entire family, pampered and spoiled beyond his wildest dreams. Although they did place high expectations on him because he was such a genius. He grew up idolizing his brother, and cared deeply for him. A care that has carried on throughout his years even if it isn’t as obvious. Ike skipped many grades. Placing him in the Junior class in high school whenever he is a 12 year old.

Ike has been picked on a lot. For his intelligence, his Canadian looks, for being adopted, for being Jewish, basically anything. He’s gotten in trouble at school for getting into verbal fights with students or sassing off to teachers. He also began rebelling against his family and parents more and more. Becoming less family oriented and more career and intelligence oriented. Instead of joining the family for game nights and such, he’d be in his room studying or playing mind games. Ike spends his summers away at math and science camps, and does a ton of extra courses on the side. In constant pursuit of knowledge to further supplement his intelligence.

Ike is still a mamas boy though. Shelia still babies him, even though she put locks on his windows and doors as precautions. They are never in use. While he does get scolded, he never gets in serious trouble or grounded. He somehow manages to worm his way out of it with a smile and a few quick words. He has experimented with sex, drugs and alcohol. He does regularly take acid, and drinks wine. He’s a hardcore 12 year old that’s for sure. Ike’s relationship with his father is more rocky. He never forgave him for his skankhunt actions. Out of all the family, he’s the most distant from his dad. Although his dad does make efforts, Ike barely recuperates. Overall, Ike is distant from his family but still deeply cares about them in his own way. Oh yeah. And he’s still a Canadian Knight. Just saying.

 Sample paragraph:

The sounds of blasters and guns, as well as other kids voices pumped through his ears. His posture was hunched, as his gaze looked all over the TV. His mind worked a million miles per hour, he took a quick sip of his energy drink before getting right back into his groove. His team was compromised of idiots. He was used to it, though, and luckily he had enough brainpower to compensate for their shortcoming. “Matt, Thomas, Greg, flank left. I want Danny and Zach with me so we can go in from the back.” Ike ordered, his voice was high compared to the other deep voiced males.

“How come you get to be in charge?” Someone whined. Ike rolled his eyes before smirking. “I don’t know Johnny, maybe because my IQ is higher than your salary? Or maybe it’s because you’ve only gotten 6 kills while I had a 50 kill streak in the first five minutes of gameplay.” Ike said, his voice pompous. He heard laughter and other stereotypical gamer insults being thrown to Johnny. Ike didn’t care about the roast, as long as they followed him and they won, Ike didn’t care what they did. They were close to the heart of the battle, Ike could feel it in his veins. His foot tapped, his eyes widened as he got more and more into the gameplay. Then, came the attack he knew and prepared his team for.

After five minutes of fast and furious gameplay, Ike’s team had come out on top. He set down his controller and stretched, a smirk on his face. “Eat shit motherfuckers!” Ike yelled into the headset, his team mates cheered in agreement. Ike then heard heavy footsteps coming up the stairs and he groaned, knowing what was coming. He quickly turned off the headset and turned off the violent video game before picking up the thick book of quantum mechanics beside him. Simple stuff way below his level, but his mother couldn’t tell the difference between a square root and a square.

His mother barged into his room, her eyes set in a narrow glare. “Did I hear naughty language young man?” She asked, her hands on her hips. Ike’s eyes quickly widened in surprise, as if he could never do something so wild. “No mama, I would never use such filthy vocabulary.” Ike said, making his voice deliberately innocent. Ike tilted his head innocently. “But I heard Kyle playing a video game, I think he was using some vulgar terms.” Ike said, trying to hide the smirk on his face. His mother looked semi relived but also annoyed. “Of course! Thank you bubby.” His mother said, and Ike glowed from the compliment. That would have been enough, but Ike remembered Kyle had kicked him out of the living room while he was watching TV so he and Stan could watch something instead. Payback time. Ike made his face turned to curiosity. “Mommy, what’s a dildo? I heard Kyle talking about it earlier on the phone to his friends. Apparently he has a collection. Can I collect them too?” Ike said, the picture of innocence. His mother’s face grew in fury before she closed the door. He could hear her voice yelling his brothers name.

Ike laughed before picking up his headset and turning on the TV. “So? You assrammers ready for round two?”  

Headcanons:

-His dream university is Oxford University, and hopes to get a doctorate in Astrophysics.

-His best friends are Karen, Ruby and Firkle.

-He has a crush on Firkle, although he’s in serious denial.

-He’s a Republican, although he doesn’t support Trump.

-He enjoys playing pranks on others. Especially his brother.

-He’s a Rick and Morty fan. He’s not one of /those/ fans though. And actually spends time laughing at them.
