aka: me making taylor swift songs about dean winchester and/or deancas bc it’s what dean himself would want

second song on deck, as promised; this one actually has quite a few cas beats in it, especially at the start, despite it having a dean vibe overall, so it should be interesting. again, bonus fanvid link at the end <3

this is me trying

i've been having a hard time adjusting i had the shiniest wheels, now they're rusting

ok, we start off strong with a couplet that could suit either dean or cas. “the shiniest wheels” is actually a perfectly fitting metaphor for a show that treats cars like emotional avatars of the people who drive them (i could so easily go into a digression about how the same thing happens in trc but this is the wrong post for that... how do i keep finding myself emotionally invested in car-fetishizing media while barely being a can-drive gay myself). ANYWAY, the first thing that comes to mind is the impala and how it’s pretty much synonymous with dean’s sense of self, how it gets wrecked and rebuilt over the course of the show, often tied in to his emotional state. and dean, well. he’s built up a lot of trauma over the years, but he’s also just getting older, as humans do.

on the other hand, we could also see it as a cas line - he’s not as much of a carfucker car aficionado as dean but he’s an adoptive winchester so hey, it still kinda works (rip to the pimpmobile, gone but not forgotten). what i MEAN is -- cas has been slowly falling from grace ever since season 4. he was becoming more human in season 5 already, with a grim prediction of his human future in 5x04; then lived as human for a while in season 7; then became completely human in season 9 before regaining his grace. but in season 15, again, his grace was apparently failing (boy it would be SUCH a shame if that plot point just, like... got dropped... 😐). substitute “wings” for “wheels” and you get a picture of someone who used to be this unstoppable, super-powered angel soldier that demons cowered in fear of, but has slowly become more human over time. as for “a hard time adjusting”... well, cas’ journey towards humanity has not been the easiest transition: it’s come with self-doubt, mental and physical pain, and of course, as he learned about love: heartbreak.

TL;DR: LIFE COMES AT YOU FAST AND THESE GUYS ARE TIRED.

i didn't know if you'd care if i came back; i have a lot of regrets about that

‘kay, this next part is definitely cas. cas who, as i mentioned in the previous post, just keeps leaving, whether that’s because he’s sacrificing himself or taking off on his own. and because that typically goes over like a lead balloon with dean, either because it leaves him grieving and traumatised or it plays right into his abandonment issues (or both - hello purgatory arc!), cas would be tentative about coming back. it’s also very apparent that castiel feels like the winchesters only value him for his abilities and powers (and after all, he’s been created to be a soldier), so if he feels like he’s not being helpful enough, he also tends not to feel wanted (again: dean wants him to stay, but cas wants to be asked to stay). plus, we know every time they’ve had a falling out it takes dean a bit to get over his anger (“dean, i thought i was doing the right thing”; “yeah, you always do”) so i don’t think cas takes his forgiveness for granted, especially if he has lied to him in the process (yes i’m thinking about the mixtape episode). “a lot of regrets”, indeed.

pulled the car off the road to the lookout, could've followed my fears all the way down; and maybe i don't quite know what to say, but i'm here in your doorway.

here, again, the car can easily work as a metaphor for someone’s emotional state. pulling over to take a breather, to try to assess things from a distance; and with lookout points so often being perched on steep hills, it’s easy to imagine the sense of vertigo, your own fear and self-doubt almost pushing you towards dangerous, self-destructive ideas. and we know cas doesn’t do things by halves - when he’s committed to something he believes is right, he goes all out. and yes, that has led to more than one falling out.

but despite that - despite his worst fears telling him he should not come back to dean unless he’s “coming back with a win”, or able to protect him from harm (yes i’m thinking about the mixtape episode AGAIN), he does always come back to him. it’s the one thing that dean can always depend on, castiel finding his way back to him like dean is his true north. i’m here in your doorway; the please take me back once more is implied.

(and dean does take him back, because however many times castiel feels that he has failed in his mission, he always comes back and tries again, tries harder, tries to make it right or do it better. and that’s something dean relates to - fucking up in the worst ways and getting beaten down but always getting back up, always starting over, always trying again. in fact, he’s kind of the one who taught cas that. and with that-- we move over to the dean portion of this.)

they told me all of my cages were mental so I got wasted like all my potential

ah, it wouldn’t be a dean pov without some good old fashioned self deprecation. “all of my cages were mental” isn’t 100% accurate in dean’s case because he has been dealt a pretty shit hand by life, but he also excels at self-sabotage. “I got wasted” is of course an allusion to his alcoholism, but then we have the clever play on words with “wasted potential”, which... hits close to home. all dean’s ever done is tried to live up to what he thought he should be, always feeling like he was falling short. never quite the favourite son, never the man his father thought he should be, not strong enough to resist hell, not the righteous sword of michael the angels expected, not good enough for the people he loves not to leave him, just not enough.

and my words shoot to kill when I'm mad i have a lot of regrets about that

...as i said above: though dean does always forgive the people he loves, it still takes him quite a bit to get over his anger at them. and when he’s angry, he lashes out, often saying things that come off cruel, things he absolutely does not mean. and this part reminds me, yet again, of dean’s painful confession in 15x09, about how he gets so angry and doesn’t know why (of course, the answer is trauma and childhood abuse; but he has no way to process that); and he tries to stop it but he can’t, and he always, always regrets it in the end.

oh, dean. dean winchester with his ged and his give ‘em hell attitude. he breaks my heart. i touched on this in my previous post, but there’s something to be said for the fact that dean had to grow up so fast, he really didn’t grow at all in some ways ( “so ahead of the curve, the curve became a sphere”). from a young age he was shoved in a parental role, having to be both a father and mother to sam, which meant never getting to exist just for himself. which of course, in turn, means he never got to develop a healthy degree of emotional maturity. in “bad boys”, we find out that the only time dean even got close to being a normal teenager, receiving positive reinforcement by sonny and bonding with his peers, john ripped him right out of that safe haven; and by the time “after school special” is set in, he’s given up on ever getting a shot at a healthy environment, using denial as a coping mechanism by trying to pass off his and sam’s shitty, depressing lives as super edgy and cool.

i don’t really need to explain this bit i guess, but it’s about the implications of how it can somehow be easier to open up to a complete stranger rather than someone you care about; and how for dean, who is used to frequenting seedy bars and dives, one-night stands are as much about comfort than they are about pleasure. that’s the only way he knows how to let himself be touched, seen, held -- because of course, “no chick flick moments”, and besides, we know that when he falls in love he falls hard, so it’s safer to just roll in and out of town.

the interesting part in this context though, is that “but i didn’t pour the whiskey”, especially since we know dean, like every other winchester, tends to drown out his problems with alcohol; so him choosing to not do that, and instead just look for comfort from a stranger (whether it’s through sex or just chatting away at a bar) is, in itself, a sign of trying to do better. because if there’s one thing dean knows how to do, is trying, and trying, and trying again. in fact, as i mentioned above, it’s kinda where cas learned it too. and we know dean is a stand-in for human nature, so of course, this is also a larger discourse of how humans are flawed and imperfect but can always improve, always do better, always try harder or be more. and maybe that’s what makes a righteous man, really.

this next part... listen. i don’t know how it fits into the narrative of trying, but what i do know is i can’t stop thinking about grieving dean. about how every time he loses cas, a little piece of him dies too, but it’s a piece that gets bigger and bigger every time, carving a hollow inside him. it’s unsightly, it’s unforgiving, it’s raw - it’s like an open wound. and as much as dean has always taken on the role of the person who puts on a brave face, makes a joke, and pushes all his feelings down, well -- it’s hard to that; it’s hard to focus on anything else when he’s missing cas like a phantom limb. “all i want is you” which is to say i’d rather have you, cursed or not; which is to say, i need you. need you badly enough to see your face everywhere after escaping purgatory, just like “a flashback in a film reel”.

and i just wanted you to know that this is me trying (maybe i don't quite know what to say) i just wanted you to know that this is me trying; at least i'm trying.

so, yes. dean is trying. he’s always trying, even though healing and progress are not linear or easy. and he knows he’s got anger issues, he knows he’s bad with his words, but damn it, he always shows up for the people he loves, and he tries to do better, every. damn. time. partly because he’s us, he’s all of us, he’s human perfectibility incarnate; and partly because he loves cas so damn much and maybe if he gets it right this time he’ll get to keep him -- and i don’t know which of the two options makes my heart hurt the most.

This entire thing is a rant, feel free to ignore it, but I saw your post about how destiel fans can’t win in this context, and yeah. So have some rambles.

I’ve been thinking about the fact we (current spn/destiel fans) can’t win all night... I’ve seen so many people talking about how homophobic it is - and while I would very much like to argue, as every point I’ve seen made by a non-spn fan has been wrong so far, if I did everyone inside the fandom would agree and everyone outside would either call me straight or pity me for believing it’s okay.

(Cas wasn’t even sent to hell lmao. He was sent to angel death (the empty), a place he has escaped in the past. Other points, like that meta about spn has been predicting exactly this for months, that Dean ended up sobbing on the floor because he was so upset, like that death means next to nothing on spn, like that there is two episodes left, etc etc. you feel me right? I just don’t want to post wank to other spn blogs atm, we’re getting enough frustration as it is, no need to add to it.

It’s also worth pointing out that the bar is very, very low. Spn is a prominent TV show - not a Netflix show, or indie, or whatever - and it just said “main character in gay love saved the world”. [insert gif of ghostfacers dude saying that gay love can pierce through the veil of death and save the day here]

I just saw someone saying that spn having Naomi try to brainwash Cas out of loving dean makes spn homophobic (it is a conversion therapy parallel). My first response to that is that Naomi was the villain lmao? I guess we can’t write villains doing anything homophobic because having villains do homophobic things makes, uh - checks notes - villains look homophobic, and clearly we can’t have that.

There certainly are legitimate things to criticise spn about, but this isn’t it lol.

Also now some people are unironically trying to cancel Jensen because “his acting was homophobic, and so he’s clearly homophobic”, nevermind that he’s an actor and his character struggles with understanding his emotions (which I think he played excellently, myself. That scene had a very Dean delayed emotional response), nevermind the support he’s given to us queers in the past. Like. Idek man.

We would have been laughed at if we got no destiel, too.

It would have been worse, had the writers pulled a dumbledore. At this point I also trust the writers not to pull a GoT - they have explicitly criticised that ending in spn’s canon.

Spn’s writers did that by making the main villain of this season, Chuck / God, say GoT had a good ending. To reiterate a previous point I had: villains do bad things because they’re bad. And the bad things they do make them bad. For the people out there not still following, if someone does something in a story and it makes them a villain, that is explicitly telling you the story (and probably the writers) thinks that thing is bad. In this case, Chuck likes to write things for him, and we the audience have been shown and told that is bad.

Apparently thinking a gay confession is good in 2020 makes me straight. Seems unlikely, but whatever. Sorry for the length, I guess I went overboard, I’ve been holding it in lol. Anyway, DESTIEL IS CANON 💚💙 hope you have a good night

Helloo supernatural anon I hope you are living your best life right now. Yeah I’m like..... skeptical and leery myself but having lived through some absolute garbage discourse that is general purity wank, as well as the C/QL greater fandom here and on Twitter I find myself... much more wanting to question the ��general wisdom” of things esp in terms of negativity, bc a lot of the time I find.... it’s wrong? Like so wrong. Or at least presents such an incomplete picture of the whole situation and also presents it in such a removed context that words that have meaning and are operationalized in a certain way for a reason, no longer have meaningful usage.

Anyway I don’t... know too much about the specifics of Spn but someone I follow is into it and talks a lot about the Gnostic stuff and that all was very fascinating to me, and I also have been grappling a lot with cultural Christianity bc of cmedia and the way ppl just *clenches fist* unthinkingly or uncritically slap some Christian norms on it and call it a day 😩 help I’m Tired. My thing here being... I actually got tired of the uncritical “superhell”s at some pt bc I am, in fact, incredibly exhausted with cultural Christianity, and because it does seem like, even possibly(?) without the Gnostic stuff it’s different from a “hell” or other Protestant-derived afterlife concept, and also yeah that it wasn’t seeded out of nowhere, it was set up to happen, which then... lends credence to the idea that whatever the current era of Spn is doing, the current showrunners are doing it with purpose.

And idk I just... refuse to believe the concept that ALL of the fans of Spn - esp the ones who have been following it still, or got back into it and are following it currently, are acting under delusion or are fooling themselves into liking it or thinking it’s good or whatever. I personally find that kinda infantilizing and patronizing and playing into issues of dismissing things women and/or other marginalized identities like.

Plus I find the concept that (from what I think I’ve been seeing Spn fans say) that the current era of the show is quite actively grappling with itself, its past, its legacy. to be very interesting and compelling; it hearkens back to like an old lore kind of feeling, of a thing that has grown into a nigh undefeatable monster and realizing that, also realizing that the only way to defeat itself is through grappling with its own nature and transforming and transmuting itself into something else. I personally find that more plausible and compelling than “Supernatural has been actively and continuously queerbaiting for 15 homophobic homophobic years., so right now we’re all very sorry for you because this maybe is no longer queerbaiting but it’s still homophobic and it can never be anything different ever.” I’ve been sort of tangentially aware of Spn thru the years and didn’t we agree, around the time of that in-universe play about Spn and with the lil Destiel shoutout, that Spn has come a ways as far as coming to terms with its fandom and working to treat its fans better? Why the sudden regression into “oh no, Supernatural is and forever will be homophobic and a hate crime”? 🤔

The rest under a cut bc the ask is already long and then my rambling will get longer-

But yeah I mean..... I get that the legacy of Supernatural has been certifiably Rough, but I think people also forget how different of a time 2005 was? Hell, how different of a time 2015 was, even, prior to, say, Obergefell v. Hodges. Now I’m not saying that to blanket-excuse Supernatural, but like, you look at mainstream shows from the era and... there’s a lot of shit lmao. The fact that Supernatural has existed this long seems to me like.... maybe we CAN look at how it’s developed through the years vs just insisting it is what it was 15, 10, hell, 5 years ago. Especially since, to my knowledge, there’s been showrunner changes? Which seems to me like it would... affect things? I mean honestly, I remember back when I got into Spn for a hot second because of Castiel, I remember watching panel, Q&A, etc vids thru the years, and like... I thought we agreed that... it was the fans who were going a bit far pushing the shipping question like literally ALL the time to the actors, who are not in control of the show and.... like at the time.... that could have had personal implications for them? And yes homophobia bad, and people can still be allies despite that, but again like.... I do feel like - from what I’ve seen - that these guys were NOT ready to deal with a lot of that but they’ve (okay Jensen I’m talking about Jensen here) genuinely grown and learned? Also how many years ago was the essay autograph thing that people keep trotting out, like what year was it in and what year of spn was it, and what were the prevailing opinions on LGBT issues and bisexuality then.

I’ve been seeing some murmurings of identity politicsing surrounding ppl who enjoy Supernatural, and I’m sorry that that’s happening to you, it really fucking sucks and it’s also the dumbest way to “make” or “win” an argument because it shouldn’t ever be a final determiner, just factors to consider when considering what life experiences might have informed someone else’s PoV and views as well as maybe how you can better communicate with them. Instead of it being a “weapon” or “tool” to either dismiss someone or de facto validate an argument.

Also yeah I get it that you don’t want to send discourse to spn blogs bc I imagine you guys ARE actively grappling with all the bs rn and it’s a lot. Even just from like, the stuff I see around, I’m like tired of it. I’m genuinely having more fun with ppl who are having a good time with Supernatural than the ppl who are hating on it, even in this sort of backhanded “oh we’re not clowning YOU we’re clowning the writers and showrunners who think you should be satisfied with this,” when... yeah? the people who HAVE been watching the show and therefore... know what’s up.. DO seem to be? And all this based on *fake gasp* context. And that’s where the backhandedness becomes kind of poisonous to me, because it implies that it IS bad, and that you SHOULDN’T be satisfied, but poor little you are but don’t worry, we’re not making fun of YOU for liking garbage, you’re just the hapless victim who is consuming the garbage bc... idk, whatever reasons ppl are coming up with ig.

idk man it’s 2020. Fandom isn’t activism, performative or otherwise, it’s okay to let people enjoy things even if you think they’re “objectively” bad, and like... I don’t know if people can call something bad when they’re not even working with the whole context and instead are dealing with rumor and reputation.

Okay so we all know who your top ships are... who are your unpopular ships? Or obscure ships? What characters from what series do you think about often in either good or bad ways? Who is a character that you hate that others love? If you could rewrite a story or part of a book, what would it be and what would you do differently?

Ok I am digging through my brain right now bc if I’m not able to hyperfixate on something then I tend to forget I even liked it. Ok buckle in bc this is gonna be long af. YOU ASKED FOR THIS, REG.

I’m putting a readmore so as not to torture my followers lol

Thinking about Veronica Mars. About Veronica/Logan. Do they have a ship name?? But I love that show and i was THERE for them. They were kind of a surprise ship for me, in that when they got together I was like, wait, WHAT? Like I was totally caught off guard. But there first kiss is, like, sooo romantic to me haha. It’s my fave scene in the show. But Logan is suck a prick sometimes. And they break up like every five minutes. And every season Logan gets accused of murder which of course he ends up not being the murderer. And they get back together eventually and I’m like really? But deep down I am rooting for them lol. I really enjoyed the new season of Veronica Mars that came out last year, actually. The ending made me SO SAD THO.

I also used to watch Supergirl and I thought Kara and Mon-El were adorable. He was very Carswell Thorne-esque, RH, I *think* you would like him. I never watched past season 3(?) though, and he shoots off into space and I never caught up so a few months ago I actually googled what happens and [spoiler] he ends up marrying someone else in the future or something so I was like, ok I’m not investing any more time in this show lol. (Also I had to google Mon-El’s name just now bc i forgot which is a bad look BUT I WAS REALLY RIDE OR DIE FOR THEM FOR A WHILE lol). Also I loved Martian Manhunter in this show, he was my favorite character. But the CGI for him was awful, omg. He had practical makeup at first, they should have just stuck with that.

Speaking of Martian Manhunter, I also used to watch Young Justice and loved Miss Martian/Superboy. Am I basic??? lol oop. But I love basic love stories. Anyway, I thought they were super cute. In season 3 though they’re kind of on the rocks. I haven’t watched season 4. I also loved Artemis/Wally West, but of course that had to end tragically.

Also, let’s talk about Nightcrawler. Allow me to set the scene. Little Kat is 13 and just rediscovered the cartoon she saw a few times as a kid called X-Men: Evolution. And thus, a weird obsession with the German, blue demon boy began. I loved Kurt Wagner. In the cartoon he starts a relationship with Amanda Sefton and I thought they were a-dor-a-ble. She accepted him for who he was, and they had a really nice healthy relationship. A lot of ppl shipped him with Kitty too which i am honestly all for idec I JUST WANT THE BLUE BOI TO BE HAPPY.

Can we talk about A:TLA too??? Like, obviously Zutara, amiright? Power couple. Like, Kataang is.. fine, but its probably my least favorite part about the ending, haha. Also, consider: Tokka. Toph is bae and can get anyone she wants, and she clearly had kind of a crush on Sokka and I think they could have been awesome. It actually kills me that they never say who Lin and Suyin’s father is in LoK. I had a whole theory that it was that kid The Duke from Jet’s band based on like 2 scenes from the series. There’s a tumblr post I made about it somewhere in the ether lol.

I also just remembered Tahnorra (Tahno/Korra) from Legend of Korra. It’s hard for me to explain this one. It’s a weird combination of being hyperfixated on the first season of the show when it came out, and I think I stumbled upon some fic or something???? And I thought Tahno was hot or something??? And FUN FACT, he was voice by Rami Malek BEFORE HE WAS COOL. So like before Rami really got big I knew who he was. He also basically played the Avatar in Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 2 and I thought that connection was hilarious. It was kind of a problematic crack pairing but there was one author in particular whom i follow to this day hoping she’ll update her Tahnorra fics…. *sigh*

Okay one last ship…. I used to be ride or die for Outlaw Queen in Once Upon a Time (aka Regina/Robin Hood). Like, before TLC, I had a personal tumblr renaissance for that ship alone. My only existing published fanfic is for that ship. Taylor Swift’s 1989 came out that year and I related every dang song to that ship. I loved Regina so much and I just wanted her to be happy. That show is a dumpster fire, though, and spat all over my hopes and dreams. *sigh*

Frank Castle/Karen Page (The Punisher) ok this one isnt that obscure but I never talk about it… but the pining, oh god the pining

Jaime Lannister/Brienne of Tarth (GoT) THEIR 5 SECONDS TOGETHER ARE THE ONLY WORTHY PART OF SEASON 8. everything after that never happened

I already listed Roy Mustang/Riza Hawkeye (FMAB) as a top pairing previously but I feel the need to mention it again bc it was for real my OG OTP… LIKE U WANNA TALK ABOUT PINING…. *sobs*

Percy/Annabeth (Percy Jackson and the Olympians) This used to be my fave book series and i loved how their relationship developed over the course of the books

Neville Longbottom/Luna Lovegood (Harry Potter) ok can we TALK ABOUT THIS??? They were both badass misfits and they were perfect for each other. But noooo JKR has to announce they marry some nobodies…. this is the only change the last movie did right

Midna/Link (Zelda: Twilight Princess) I honestly have no explanation for this lol

Qui-gon Jinn and Shmi (Star Wars) CAN U IMAGINE if anakin had a proper father figure and didnt have to abandon his mother to slavery

Obi-wan/Satine…. (Star Wars: The clone Wars) we know whats up

OK, to answer some of your other questions: character I hate that others love. HMMMM…….

This one seems too easy/obvious but Professor Snape? Like obviously there’s already a ton of discourse surrounding this but he was gross, mistreated his students for years, committed atrocities, couldn’t get over his high school crush, and we’re supposed to believe he’s a hero in the end and HARRY WOULD NAME HIS SON AFTER HIM….. uh no. “Always” is gross.

I’ve literally been wracking my brain for days and I can’t think of any more characters for this. OK I did some googling and I remembered some LOL.

Ross from friends…. I literally can’t stand him. He’s so entitled and just the worst. He tries to act like he’s the nice, sensitive guy, but really he is so full of himself. Joey on the other hand is portrayed as a womanizer but is actually super sweet and I love him

Archie from Riverdale… I have only seen the first 1.5 seasons ish but he is the worst…. we’re supposed to believe he’s some easygoing musically gifted football player but instead he manages to pull off being bland as heck and actually kind of a terrible garbage person

Nick from chilling adventures of Sabrina. I hate characters that are like hitting on the main character even though she has a bf and are like dark and broody and sexy blah blah blah…. I liked Harvey way better. I never finished season 2 tho

Emma Swan from Once Upon a Time? Idk she was fine she just got old after a while

HM. First, Harry would name his son Remus Rebeus Potter LOL. Ok but real talk there was a headcanon floating around forever ago that Harry should have become a professor at Hogwarts instead of an auror and I am 100% on board

Ok, ok….. what abouuuttt…… OK, is star wars when Han and Leia get together. I like them as a couple, but the entire first half of the movie Han is being such an ass. And when they kiss the first time, he’s being SOOO creepy. It’s like so quintessentially 80s romance. and HERE’S THE THING. They actually filmed (or maybe just wrote?) a version of that scene that WASNT CREEPY. And i’m like WHY DIDNT YOU USE THAT?!? So I like to pretend that’s the version that actually happened.

Little thought about The Tyrant’s Tomb. [SPOILERS!!!!]

oKAY, so I’m gonna start off by saying that, as usual, Rick Riordan’s writing style never fails to impress and draw me in to keep reading and not stop until I’ve devoured every last word. I was DESPERATE to read this book because it took me longer to get it than usual, and I was trying to go into it spoiler free (aside from reading the snippets that Uncle Rick posted on his Twitter every now and then.) I pretty much managed to do so, and it made the experience that much more emotional for me. I went into The Burning Maze KNOWING that Jason was going to die, but I had absolutely no idea what I’d be facing in this book.

Camp Jupiter

I’m just gonna flat out say it; I was never really all that interested in Camp Jupiter in the beginning. I didn’t like the majority of the characters (aside from Dakota who is my legal son) and the camp structure (though accurate to the Romans) seemed too strict and harsh to me. The ranking systems confused me, and it all in all just did not appeal to me the way Camp Half-Blood does. However, the more I read, the more attached I grew, and although I still MUCH prefer Camp Half-Blood and would choose it in a heartbeat when choosing between the two camps, it still became an interesting place to read about. I ADORE the idea of New Rome and the sharp contrast of silly demigods like the fifth cohort vs. the strict rules and upbringing of the camp.

When Jason died in The Burning Maze and the next book was set to take place surrounding Camp Jupiter, I grew excited. I REALLY wanted to meet more of the demigods of the Roman camp and explore them more (mostly Dakota but I digress.) Although I knew reading about everyone’s reactions to Jason’s death would be hard, I fought through it and was somewhat surprised by the lack of grieving that was presented. I mean, the ENTIRE first few chapters were ALL about Jason’s coffin and Lester and Meg grieving and trying their best to get it to camp but when it actually got there there really wasn’t that much of an uproar. At first I thought that was strange but looking back at it the Romans are brought up to be strong and not let emotions take over them, and people like Hazel have to show absolute strength. Besides the camp was already in mourning over DOZENS of other campers at the time.

That was another thing that sort of bugged me. I was absolutely ITCHING to meet some new characters and granted I got a few, but the majority of the ‘newer’ characters had already been killed and served only as the undead army.

THAT WAS SO FUCKED UP. It was one thing that I think Rick did a really good job with in upping the deep and darkness of the Riordanverse series. Can you imagine fighting your undead comrades and friends?? Like holy shit, that was emotional. I was super worried I spoiled something for myself on Istagram bc I read a post someone made about Jason trying to get the undead Romans to follow him instead or direct them away from camp, but I should have known it wasn’t true since he was literally burned.

Frank

Speaking of burning, I ACTUALLY thought Rick killed Frank off. Up until this book, I hadn’t really realized how much I loved this man. His character is just so well-written and likable and when he sacrificed the wood, I was like NOOOOOOOOO. I was SO grateful he came back in the end because I was sure Rick would never hear the end of THAT one if he allowed it to really happen. On the bright side, my baby boy can now enjoy his life with a little bit more vigor and less fear now that the stick is gone for good.

New Characters

Lavinia Asimov: Okay, Lavinia is a REALLLLLLLY weird character to me. She reminds me a lot of Lou Ellen to be honest, but for some reason, she doesn’t appeal to me as much as Lou Ellen does. (Maybe it’s just because I tend to prefer minor characters) Her rebelliousness seemed a little too... forced at times?? And her whole thing with the dryads and fauns was kinda weird too, but I guess since she likes Poison Ivy, it makes sense. However, she kinda did grow on me, I suppose, and I wouldn’t mind seeing more of her.

Poison Ivy: I REALLY wished we could have met her even just once. Lavinia would not shut up about her and was CONSTANTLY rebelling against the rules in camp just to see her, so I wanna know just what kind of a character she is. I’m sure she would have been very interesting and sassy to have been Lavinia’s love interest lol

Pranjal: He’s a good boy!!! Not quite sure how to pronounce his name properly, but his appearance is adorable and I LOVE the fact that he’s a son of Aesculapius because he’s one of my favorite gods soooo... I really wish we could have seen more of him!! He’s kinda like Clovis in the way that he has like one important part, gets mentioned like two times afterwards and then never again :^/

Aristophanes: he’s a cat,,, i love him,,,

Harpocrates: This was SO interesting and out of the blue to me having gone in spoiler free!! He’s earned a new spot up in my favorite gods list because of how interesting and mysterious he is. His concept was great and although i was sad to see him sacrificed, I hope that he and Sibyl are together wherever they are bc that was damn cute and made me so emotional afgkjldg why did Apollo have to be such a dick as a god,,,

MY BOY HAS GROWN!!! He’s so human now, and I’m so proud. He doesn’t even second guess sacrificing himself or humiliating himself to save his friends. I just... I have a lot of feelings over his character development. Rick handles him SO well, and I just,,, I love him,,, i am,,, in love with him,, i would date lester papadopoulos

Meg

She’s grown to be such a doll!! I was SUPER annoyed by her in the first books, but now she’s my daughter. I love that she’s actually expressing emotions other than ‘annoying 12 year old’ now. Like I wanna protect her.

Reyna

She was a pretty good character in this book and her leaving the camp was a HUGE surprise to me. I kinda wish she was still praetor because idk Hazel just doesn’t rlly seem as fit for it as Reyna was, and I like Reyna a lot, but idk i guess it’s coolio. I was also glad Rick cleared up all the romance discourse about her too though the way he did it was kinda weird (she literally was using the word ‘ship’ out loud like wh-- and i don’t remember the venus thing at all so maybe i missed it from a different book? idk it came out of nowhere to me)

Ella and Tyson

I actually like Ella a lot now!! I used to find her quite annoying, and her relationship with Tyson felt forced, but now that I had the time to get used to her and figure out her character a little more, I do like her. She sort of treats Tyson weird, but I think towards the end, I fell for their relationship more. Tyson was literally excellent, show-stopping, breath-taking, amazing,,, like YESSS KING I LOVE YOU AND YOU PEANUT BUTTER-SMELLING SELF (that one scene where he just started dancing and apollo didn’t know if it was for the ritual or just bc he felt like it killed me)

Character Deaths

Dakota: I AM NEVER GOING TO GET OVER THIS ONE FOLKS. YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW MANY TIMES I HAD TO REREAD THE SAME SENTENCE TO MAKE SURE THAT I WASN’T HAVING A NIGHTMARE. I PHYSICALLY CANNOT BELIEVE THAT RICK KILLED HIM OFF. I’M STILL EMOTIONAL OVER IT, AND JUST AJSDHF;AMNJ ‘; NOOOOOOOOOOO THIS IS THE SECOND SIBLING POLLUX HAS LOST IM GOING TO S C R E A M HE WAS ONE OF MY FAVORITE CHARACTERS AND HE DESERVED BETTER DAMN IT I’M LITERALLY IN SHOCK LITERALLY DO NOT TALK TO ME LIKE I’M STILL IN SHOCK FROM CREST’S DEATH IN THE LAST BOOK TBH AND NOW THIS??? NOW I’M SCARED CLOVIS IS GONNA DIE JSDKLFKS the only thing that gives me comfort is that Jason can be with his friend in Elysium now fuckkkk,,, rick why did you do this to me,,, I LITERALLY CANNOT EXPRESS HOW UPSET I AM I WILL N E V E R HEAL

Don: Don was sort of a comic relief character in SoN, and it was very sad to see him go. He reminded me a lot of Grover, and his death scene with Lavinia ACTUALLY made me tear up. THIS BOOK MADE ME SO EMOTIONAL GOD DAKOTA AND DON WERE LITERAL BABIES RICK GIVE THEM BACK

Bobby: listen,,, we never even met this kid rlly and i was still super sad when lavinia had to kill him again and hannibal is without him and just ughhh whyyy

Julia’s mother, father, AND foster parents: HOLY SHIT RICK WASN’T THAT KIND OF OVERKILL??? I felt so bad for the poor girl, especially cause she’s like six??? But it’s very sweet that Terminus adopted her. I really liked that.

Jacob: AAHHHAHA this one made me sad too!!!! he was such a minor character, but he reminded me of Damien White and Ethan Nakamura (if he were allowed to actually be a kid,) so I think that’s why I was sort of partial to him. The way he died was SUPER horrid too, so I just,,, im big sad for him (on a good hand, he went down F I G H T I N G)

Mentions of anything relating to Hypnos or his children

Yes, i am keeping track, sue me. Somnus was mentioned one time in this book as one of the gods Apollo briefly considered summoning to his aid, and it is presumed he has some sort of tribute at Camp Jupiter had he not before. You’ll make another appearance someday Clovis, I know it :’^D

Final Thoughts

I literally CANNOT wait for the next book (which I presume is the last one.) From what it seems, we’re returning to New York, so Camp Half-Blood will be present. I can’t wait to see my babes again, and I’m REALLY hoping more minor characters will be allowed to shine (cough clovis cough) but like i KNOW some will die and just,,, im sad,,, dakota’s death has wrecked me,,, but on the side note, the new book is coming out in my last year of school!!! i’m so excited because this series holds emotional value to me like i’ve literally gone through my high school career with trials of apollo like it was with me the whole time and it’s one of the only things that keeps me going. i just,,, i have no words to express how much this series and all the others mean to me...

So I’ve had to redo this two times now because going back and forth from the episode and this fucked everything up (I can slide to the next window and it keeps taking away this post so I can’t do anything about getting it back so I’m VERY pissed right now and not in the mood to watch this twenty million goddamn times)

And this is coming from someone who actually liked Varchie—they were cute, and the only “bad” thing they did was have sex at the worst moments (but to be fair, that’s all Veronica really knew how to expose herself, her feelings, because of her parents, so at least it makes SENSE) but now they’re grown and I just… I know I’m going to be disappointed in the writers when they make Varchie get back together for no fucking reason

- Also Varchie as this duo who ban together to get what they want? Iconic and powerful, thank you. So much better than wannabe detective duo bughead

- I know I’m not surprised but they had such a good streak of having Betty not be intolerable up until now. WHY THE FUCK IS SHE ASKING HER EMOTIONALLY SPENT COUSIN INTO A FARM THAT LEGIT USES THEIR TRAUMA AGAINST THEM TO MAKE THEM JOIN LIKE??? DOES BETTY EVEN THINK OF SHIT BEFORE SHE DOES THEM??? People praise her for being smart but uh… clearly her boyfriend’s stupid thought process and getting herself into stupid shit she doesn’t have to be in is rubbing off on her. LITERALLY she is the “Serpent queen” couldn’t she ask Jughead to spare a Serpent that’s not Sweet Pea (since Fangs was already romantically manipulated into joining ugh —although I like Kangs don’t come at me okay—) to infiltrate? - Instead of Cheryl, it would have been much more interesting to see Betty fall into the Farm, and have Cheryl save her instead because, you know, it’s much more realistic and less boring.

- Can someone make an edit where it’s Archie instead of Jughead thanks

(part 1) ur gonna roast me for this but im legit curious why mafia AUs are so bad? im asking in a non confrontational way, i get it romanticizing mafia is wrong, but i also believe that 1)most mafia AUs are a really toned down type of mafia;2)they do make for some interesting kinds of dynamics with fanart and with fics; 3)in a fic specifically u can create your own world and call something mafia and still make it so they don't kill innocent people but only idk members of other gangs or sth

(part 2) plus theyre a way to put ur charas in a completely diff context and see what theyll do. i mean i dont believe that writing ships in a certain context (like mafia) equals romanticizing that context. mafia AUs arent even my fav things to read (in fact i almost never do), im sure many ppl romanticize it and i obvs dont agree with that but im just trying to udnerstand bc i believe fandoms are a way to explore things that we normally wouldnt.

okay, so, let’s have it out of the way: I have nothing against mob aus or crime aus. I have a problem against calling them mafia AUs because in the US mafia = organized crime at large, in Italy mafia = ACTUAL EXISTING ORGANIZATIONS THAT ARE ACTIVELY HARMFUL. now that I introduced the topic I’ll c/p you the reply I gave to another anon who while discussing the issue pointed out that most writers don’t even know Italian mafia is a thing, which is pretty much on the same discourse so...

*The thing is - in the US it might not be enough of a deal anymore and I honestly do get why people make the mafia = regular mobsters, since the mafia was the first foreign organized crime being exported to the US via italian immigrants (sorry if this sounds horrible in English but I just woke up and I still didn’t have coffee) so I understand that mafia became the umbrella term.But the thing is that - as you said, these people don’t even know that there’s a mafia in Italy anymore or where the word comes from.

I’m going to link to italiansreclaimingitaly’s tag about the mafia and its perception outside Italy because they posted about this extensively and it’s an excellent resource, but meanwhile I’m gonna do a very short bullet point list and about the topic:

Mafia might not be a big deal in the US, but it still is here. We have the beauty of four different mafias (Cosa Nostra - the Sicilian one, camorra which is the one in Campania but has tendrils spread everywhere, the 'ndrangheta which is in Calabria and the Sacra Corona Unita in Puglia) which are all active [especially camorra and 'ndrangheta] and whose actions have direct impact (negative) on our economy and on our society. Actually mafias are one of the main reasons we’re currently economically fucked up, and if I start talking about how mafia culture keeps some areas literally backwards I could talk about it for three months.

There are still people who are killed for standing up against them. These days the most prominent personality is Roberto Saviano who is a writer who dared to put together a book documenting minutely the way camorra works and he’s been living under protection for years by this point. Like, they want him dead because he wrote a book. And I’m sorta sure that he was talking about leaving Italy and going to the US after years of sticking with it here because he can’t take it anymore but I don’t know if it was a taken decision or if it’s still debating it.

It wasn’t even thirty years ago that we had the stragi di mafia - in english it’d be something like the mafia slaughters, basically around the beginning of the nineties there were a number of bombs planted by the mafia targeting people who were trying to oppose it including judges Falcone and Borsellino, actually the anniversary of Falcone’s death is like... tomorrow. And they’ve killed people for way longer than that. Here is a list of only Cosa Nostra victims including the ones from the eighties/nineties. And people are still dying because of it. The slaughters I’m referring to are just the ones in the nineties which are enough of a number.

They also perpetuate a culture where if you testify against your mafia-employed relatives you’ll be shunned forever. There are women who testified against their families and couldn’t see their children anymore never mind that they weren’t automatically considered a relative anymore the moment they sided against the mafia. Some people have committed suicide after becoming witnesses also because our police force/justice system can be terribly non-supportive in this kind of situation so they got left on their own. Never mind that back in the day - it was the beginning of the nineties? - I recall at least a particular story of - I think, correct me if I remember wrong but I can’t remember the names for the life of me - where this guy testified against the local mafia when he either used to work for them or was forced to pay them the pizzo and in retaliation his six-year old (or five? Anyway he had a son younger than ten for sure) got kidnapped, killed and thrown into acid to dispose of the body. That happened in what, 1993? 1994? It’s pretty much yesterday. And now the camorra is doing the same - there’s a list here of camorra victims among which accidental passerbys that got killed because they were in the way which I can tell just by glancing is not complete. And I’m not even going into the 'ndrangheta. That is to say, here mafia still kills people and cripples our country.

Now, I get that it’s a word, but the point was: let’s say that instead of the Italians the Japanese came to the US first and the umbrella word for organized crime was yakuza rather than mafia and let’s say yakuza was still what it was originally in Japan while in the US it stopped being a big deal and people write yakuza!AU instead of mafia AU. Let’s say someone Japanese gets angry at that and goes like 'listen the yakuza is a real deal it does this this this and that and it’s a plague in our country so can you please at least look it up before writing your fanfic’, which is what had happened way back then when this whole mafia and fanfic thing blew up. A bunch of people told us to get over it because it’s just a word and if it’s a problem in Italy it’s not in the US so why should they care? Now, if we had been Japanese (or Chinese or Russian or Mexican) would they have said the same thing? Considering the general tumblr attitude I’m pretty sure they would have received either an apology or 'this is an important deal let’s keep that in mind’ with signal boost reblogs and stuff.

It’s the fact that we should get over people not knowing that it’s still a real problem for us and that they can’t take five seconds to google it that is the problem imo. Especially when instead of mafia au you can just say mobsters au or tag it as organized crime and everyone is a lot happier, mostly because as the tag above explains romanticising the mafia is a good thing for them because it means they can act outside Italy with less stigma because everyone thinks that the mafia is dead or not relevant anymore, if I’m explaining myself. (And it’s active outside Italy - like, there was a mafia kill in Germany in 2007 where six people died (sorry the link is in Italian but there isn’t an English wiki page, if you look the city up you’ll find something probably) and it was because of the 'ndrangheta.

I’d really like to not get worked over it because it meant it was a thing of the past y'know, but the problem is that it isn’t and I’d rather spread some awareness in hope some of these writers look it up (because it’s a good thing that people know what mafia is since as stated they have tendrils everywhere - if you read Saviano’s book the entire first chapter is about how camorra regularly deals with Chinese import/export in Italy for one) than shrug and figure that since they’ll think everything is good for fanfic then it’s not even worth my time.*

Diff anon, but for me in the beginning, Aro/Ace p*dge was pretty eh in terms of popularity. Then people noticed her getting shipped with Sh*ro which lead to a spike in it. Then it was vehemently picked up when ppl saw her/lanc3 or her/ke*th. It was embraced on both the @nt* and prosh*p sides bc it’s a pretty innocent headcanon. It only really gets into yuck territory when those same ppl attack others with it. Some Ace ppl had issues with it bc they saw it as ppl hiding sh*ph@te behind inclusion

Yeah, okay, see, and that’s what I was talking about in my answer to the first ask. VLD has a whole mess of extenuating circumstances that make it a not great example of aro/ace headcanons being used to cast a female character off to the side. A) because VLD is a pretty ensemble style show, and it’s not like Pidge has a level of spotlight in the show fandom is then diminishing in its fanworks; and B) shipping culture is toxic in every imaginable way, and for the most part AGE is the main contributing factor, not m/m versus m/f shipping. By and large, people picking up aro/ace Pidge was to further the anti-sh*aladin cause, not because they were necessarily rooting for a particular Shiro ship.

If someone wants to chat about aro/ace Black Widow, that’s a conversation I’d be willing to have, as it’s better suited. There is a clear Phl*nt VS Whatever-The-Clint-Nat-Ship-Name-Is dynamic that you can look at and discuss. Because Natasha is one of maybe three examples I can think of where this honestly might happen. (Though even then, I disagree that it’s anywhere near prevalent enough, or is even an actual problem that merits being part of a callout post about toxic shipping culture ffs)

And actually, having had some time to sit with the post and consider why it bothered me so much, I’ve actually realized exactly why. Because as mentioned above, there’s some degree of aro/ace headcanoning that’s done to further ship agendas versus being good faith attempts at representation. BUT instead of framing it that way, OP frames it as cringy shippers saying, and I quote, “she’s aro/ace uwu” and that is… so beyond disrespectful.

In our current climate that is so anti-inclusion and lumps aro/ace discourse in with cringe culture (and often times straight cringe culture at that) to even imply there is ANYTHING wrong with headcanoning a “fan favourite female character” as aro/ace, and to say that it’s only done because she's “not an immediate threat to the popular m/m ship” is – i’m sorry but it’s vile.

OP isn’t being the great champion of aro/ace representation here. They’re shaming aro/ace people for deigning to include themselves in narratives, because apparently you can only respect a female character if someone’s still able to fuck her??? There’s no care or compassion for the aro/ace people who might see themselves being commodified by instances of aro/ace rep done in bad faith, it’s still just all about OP bolstering their (anti-slash) agenda.

And that’s just what it’s like to be aro/ace across the board. All the fucking time. And it’s tiresome. Hating on aro/aces because it’s the fun thing to do is tired and overplayed. Aren’t people tired?

It’s also a damn shame because the post is otherwise saying something very important. Female characters are often mistreated by fandom, in some fandoms worse than others. Some of it can be put on the original works themselves, but sometimes it is fandom culture that twists things to shut out a female character in favour of their OTP.

But this happens both in the cases of m/m AND m/f (and in some cases f/f) ships. This analysis is completely targeted against m/m shipping, and, by my reading anyway, seems to come from a place of critiquing straight m/m shippers. There’s no consideration held for the queer shipper. Which is a position I’ve seen so many strait women take on m/m shipping which is JUST as maddening (and I can’t comment on if OP is a strait woman or not, their blog links back to nothing) but that’s how it reads.

(Also it pisses me off that the specific example was “she’s aro/ace” and not “she’s a lesbian” (which I’ve seen too!!!) or a more broad “she’s not attracted to men” but I’m gonna just stop here of we’ll be here all night.)

Shouto receives a notification as soon as the tweet is uploaded because, for some reason, when the message popped up back when he was setting up his account asking if he wanted to get an alert every time @groundzero posted something, he clicked yes without a second thought.

Thinking about it now, Shouto can admit to himself it probably had something (a lot) to do with the fact he had (has) some sort of feelings for Bakugou. It’s been that way ever since their third year at UA and Shouto can actually pinpoint the exact moment he started seeing Bakugou in this new light -- something he’s been told isn’t very typical.

(“With most people it’s a gradual thing, I think,” Izuku said once Shouto confided in him. “They like each other as friends first, then they realise at some point down the road those feelings have grown into something else, something more.” He blinked then, mind seemingly catching up to his mumbling, and waved his hands around so vigourously Shouto was worried they’d fall off. “Not that, not that there’s anything wrong about your situation! I’m not an expert on those things, I’ve never really even dated anyone! I definitely didn’t mean to imply you’re weird or your situation’s weird or--” At this point Shouto raised a hand and attempted to ease Izuku’s worries, assuring him that’s not how he took his words, that he wasn’t offended, etc. Privately, though, he couldn’t help but wonder if Izuku’s perceived understanding of crushes and feelings wasn’t based mainly on his own predicament; he did notice how flustered Izuku seemed to get around that one particular classmate of theirs.)

His phone lights up again with yet another notification and Shouto can feel his lips twitching. He raises his head, finally, to look at where Bakugou’s lounging on the couch across of him.

“Don’t you have your own merchandise to promote?”

Bakugou barely even looks up from his phone as he says, without missing a beat, “Freakshow said I should do some charity work.”

It gets a snort out of Shouto, though he’s quick to cover it up once he sees Bakugou’s eyes shift to him. He can’t have the man thinking Shouto finds him amusing; it’d only feed his already too big to be healthy ego, and Shouto’s not that gone on him.

Mostly.

“I doubt she appreciates being called that,” he says instead, tone intentionally dry to make up for his previous slip-up. He knows he’s right, though, because he can recall at least five different occasions where Bakugou’s manager’s yelled at him for not using her name. Honestly, Shouto’s just impressed she can even do her job -- managing Bakugou in any way seems incredibly vexing, if dealing with him on a daily basis is any indication.

“Guess how many fucks I give,” Bakugou says in response and this time, his eyes stay on his phone, fingers rapidly flying over the screen. He’s surprisingly active on social media, much more than Shouto himself that’s for sure; Shouto has no idea how he does it nor what appeal there is to it, but he’s not judging. Not in the slightest, considering Bakugou’s online presence is one of the highlights of Shouto’s day.

He has to stifle a wince as soon as that thought crosses his mind because honestly, at this point his crush is just sad.

“So,” Izuku starts after taking a sip of his iced tea. “How’s Kacchan?”

It’s an innocent question and yet it makes Shouto frown at what it implies. He knows perfectly well that Izuku and Bakugou are on much better terms now than they’ve ever been, and while they still clash every now and then, it’s not that much of a stretch to assume they’re keeping tabs on each other. Which, of course, means Izuku isn’t really asking how Bakugou is. No, he’s subtly hinting at Shouto’s feelings, to which Shouto honestly has no idea how to respond.

“He’s fine,” is what he says finally. In the back of his mind, he wishes he hadn’t already finished his drink so that he could have something to distract himself with, but alas, he and Izuku scheduled to meet right after his workout and so he was quick to finish both his meal and his drink.

Izuku seems to find his answer unsatisfactory because he frowns too, expression matching Shouto’s, except when Midoriya Izuku frowns, it’s like looking at a wounded puppy. “Nothing’s changed between you two?”

“I… don’t see why it would.” After all, Shouto is reasonably sure none of his actions have been betraying his feelings and he has no intention of changing that.

Izuku shakes his head, energetically, of course, the way he does everything. “You’ve been spending a lot of time together! And Kacchan always talks about you, doesn’t he? In interviews and on his accounts; I really think there’s something there!”

Shouto raises an eyebrow, dubious. He’s never got that feeling from the way Bakugou acts around him. Yes, they’ve become friends now, he supposes, but something more? It’s honestly never crossed his mind Bakugou could see him in such a light.

“I believe he’s only being,” friendly, he goes to say but then remembers it’s Bakugou he’s talking about and his lips twitch, “civil.”

“I don’t know about that,” Izuku says, thoughtful, and there’s a glint in his eye that reminds Shouto of when he’s taking notes on various Quirks. He stifles a sigh; he really hopes Izuku doesn’t go to overanalyse his relationship with Bakugou. That would just make everything even more confusing and tiring than it already is.

A Comprehensive List of All (Known Public) Shouto and Ground Zero Interactions

Ground Zero and Shouto debut as Pro-Heroes on the same day. Ground Zero subtweets about Shouto and seems to be challenging him while at the same time congratulating him.

Ground Zero does an interview in which he mentions Shouto as one of his biggest rivals. (2:47) (Also, the question is about which heroes he respects the most so Ground Zero doesn’t mean rivals in a negative way.)

Red Riot uploads a picture of Ground Zero’s 21st birthday celebration which seems to consist of a small circle of close friends (nicknamed by the general public as ‘the Bakusquad’) and, perhaps most notably, Shouto.

Ground Zero is asked by a reporter if his friends influence his speech patterns (in regards to recent rumours swirling around at the time that he might be dating fellow hero, Utsushimi Camie, who is known for using ‘slang’ words which also make frequent appearances in Ground Zero’s tweets.) As two of the relatively youngest (and, Shouto feels no shame to admit mostly because it doesn’t matter, the most popular) heroes on the scene, it makes sense UA would ask Shouto and Bakugou to talk to some classes, offer them useful advice and maybe even help them with their development.

As Shouto and Bakugou, however, Shouto is inclined to wonder what the principal even expects would happen. After all, he’s aware he’s not one of the most expressive heroes out there; that’s not to say he lacks passion, despite what many might believe, but instead that he shows it in a different way. His whole life, his determination and conviction have been silent, focused, not expressed through shouted words and loud proclamations.

He doesn’t know how to inspire those kids in a way they’d understand him.

Then there’s Bakugou, who Shouto knows will tip the scales in the other direction. He gets fired up over the smallest of things and while sometimes helpful in a fight, Shouto understands his attitude can also be overwhelming for someone who’s not used to his ways.

Simply put, he doesn’t hold out much hope for this to end up as a successful class.

“Morning,” Bakugou grumbles as he enters the teachers’ room, hands inside his pockets, less than five minutes before they’re supposed to go meet the kids. He takes a long look around before letting out a snort. “Huh. Not as shitty as I expected.”

Shouto is about to reply, dry comment already on the tip of his tongue, when a voice beats him to it.

“Thank you for the outstanding review,” Aizawa says from the doorway, face and voice as blank as ever. “Would you like to inspect the rest of the staff’s rooms or are you ready to go?”

Bakugou crosses his arms, face twisting, and Shouto is horrified to discover he even finds his scowl attractive in a way. “You still teaching, old man? Sure you can keep up?”

Shouto rolls his eyes and doesn’t bother hiding it. He knows for a fact that Bakugou keeps in touch with Aizawa, and he remembers the father-son relationship they’d grown to have sometime during second year; it’s just like Bakugou, though, to show affection through borderline insults.

“Save some of your attitude for the students,” he mutters as he passes him by on the way out. Aizawa’s already turned around, headed towards the training ground they’re supposed to meet the kids on, and Shouto stifles a smile as he hears Bakugou complain (loudly and violently, as one does) about being ignored.

His smile melts into a more resigned expression, however, once Bakugou pushes past him and Aizawa and greets the students with, “So you little shits want to be heroes, huh?”

PRO-HEROES SHOUTO AND GROUND ZERO MAKE AN APPEARANCE AT UA TO TEACH A SPECIAL CLASS (PICTURES INCLUDED)

Only yesterday young heroes Todoroki Shouto (23), also known by his hero name ‘Shouto’, and Bakugou Katsuki (24), a.k.a. Ground Zero, visited UA’s grounds to join class 1-A for a special training session. Todoroki and Bakugou, both former students of the Academy, have been big names on the hero scene even before their respective debuts (which happened coincidentally on the same day!) so it should come as no surprise the school’s turned to them to offer some advice to the young heroes-in-training.

The two heroes showed up at the Academy early in the morning, ready to get some training done with the young students of Class 1-A. The class representative, Hattori Eka, kindly agreed to tell us more about the experience, saying that “[Ground Zero] was very intense. He engaged with the entire class from the moment he saw us. Shouto let him take the lead, mostly, but he was also very helpful! It’s easy to see why those two are such amazing heroes,”

During the past year, Shouto and Ground Zero’s names have become more intertwined, with the two of them frequently teaming up and actively talking about one another online. It’s certainly not a friendship we expected but perhaps it’s the one we’ve needed all along.

Speaking to Momo usually leaves Shouto feeling relaxed and peaceful. She has a quality about her, one that simply makes him feel at ease when she’s around.

Since they teamed up in first year, they’ve only been growing closer, to the point where Shouto now feels more than comfortable placing his full trust in her. And he finds there’s something very liberating about knowing you can rely on someone like that.

So, yes, conversation with Momo or even simply being in her presence usually puts Shouto at ease. Tonight seems to be a slight exception, and due to no fault at Momo, of course. No, she simply does what every good friend would do and admits she’s been worried about him.

“You don’t seem happy,” she says, hesitant, unsure, as if Shouto could get mad at her for voicing her thoughts. “I mean, you do seem content. And I know things have been good lately, quieter and safer, but I can’t help but get the feeling you’re waiting for something to happen.” She waves a hand, nothing like Izuku’s energetic gestures; when Momo moves, she moves with calculated grace, somehow able to make every motion seem elegant. “That doesn’t make much sense, forgive me.”

“No,” Shouto speaks up, throat dry. He has no idea how to react to her words but not because she’s overstepping, as Momo surely believes she is. It’s because what she said hits too close to home, and before she brought it to his attention, Shouto never even noticed.

Now, however, he can’t ignore the truth of her words. Lately, he has been drifting, both in life and even in his work. As Momo said, things have been much quieter, with not as many villain attacks and a notable decrease in petty crimes too; for someone who grew up surrounded by tragedy and villains waiting at every corner, Shouto finds himself perhaps unsurprisingly unused to a life of relative peace.

His days, he realises, consist of the same routine, going over the motions over and over again, and yes, Momo’s right on that count as well -- he isn’t happy. If he has to be perfectly honest, Shouto feels rather useless, really.

The world doesn’t need him so desperately at the moment and it suddenly hits Shouto that he doesn’t quite know what to do with himself when he’s not needed.

You’re waiting for something to happen, Momo said. And he is.

When UA invited him to that teaching session, he was glad. Excited even. He didn’t have high expectations, yes, but still he looked forward to going. Even yesterday, when Momo contacted him with the suggestion to get dinner together, he found himself checking the time every now and then, counting the hours until their little outing.

It’s… a lot to realise in a minute.

“No,” he repeats and shakes his head. “You’re right. I… I hadn’t thought about it like that but you’re right. As always,” he adds with a small smile. It quickly slips away as he sighs. “I simply don’t know what to do with myself,” he confesses and a part of him feels bad about complaining essentially about being bored but he’s so very tired, suddenly. So he allows himself to let go of guilt, just for a brief moment.

Momo’s smile is encouraging. “There are plenty of things you can do! You can pick up a new hobby, meet up with friends, maybe even travel. In fact, I think a change of scenery is exactly what you need.” She keeps talking, a steady flow of different suggestions leaving her lips, and Shouto smiles.

At last, the feeling of calm is back.

“So,” Bakugou begins, arms crossed, but despite his confrontational tone and furrowed eyebrows, Shouto thinks he seems genuinely curious. “Why’d you call me here?”

“I asked,” he clarifies, a slight frown appearing on his face. “You’re making it sound as if I made you come.”

Predictably, Bakugou lets out a snort and once again, Shouto finds himself utterly charmed, despite better judgement. “You can’t ‘ make me ’ do anything, Icy Hot,” Bakugou says, meeting his eye, and there’s something there that sends a rush of electricity over Shouto’s skin. It’s not like the feeling he gets whenever he uses his Quirk and Shouto, while not the most experienced when it comes to romance, isn’t stupid. He’s just stupidly attracted to Bakugou, has been for quite a while, and it excites him as well as worries him.

He looks away and instead turns his eyes to the stage. It doesn’t lessen his attraction but it does make it easier to pretend it’s not there. “Of course not,” he agrees, attempting to stifle his smile as, out of the corner of his eye, he notices Bakugou watching him with something akin to suspicion. “You’re much too thickheaded for that.”

“Bastard,” Bakugou grumbles and punches him in the bicep, much too lightly to do any damage; it’s basically a caress by Bakugou standards, he thinks, amused. “What’s this dumb play even about?”

“Dragons,” Shouto says, tone dry. “That dance.”

Don’t mess with me, hon 💄💋

Shouto raises an eyebrow, amused, as his phone chimes in with yet another Twitter notification, as it has been doing for the past few minutes. “Are you getting into fights on the Internet again?” he asks Bakugou who finally puts his phone down.

“Shut up,” he says but his tone lacks heat. He pokes around his food, unusually hesitant, before his abrasive attitude wins over and he lets out an annoyed breath. “Some woman saw us at the theatre. And then numbskulls started asking her for pictures and shit.”

Shouto blinks, for some reason slow to take Bakugou’s words in. He tries to think back on something particularly incriminating this woman might’ve captured but quite frankly, he draws blank; he imagines they must’ve seemed pretty boring to an outsider, even if Shouto considers the night anything but.

“Alright,” he says, unsure of what else there is to say. However Bakugou’s still staring at him, expectant, so Shouto tries to come up with more. “How many pictures?”

It’s a stupid thing to ask, Shouto realises that as soon as the words leave his mouth, but he’s committed to his temporary, Bakugou-induced stupidity. So he meets Bakugou’s eye, waiting, and tries not to wince at the dumbfounded look he gets.

“The fuck you mean, she shot them down.” A grin appears on the man’s lips. “It was pretty fucking funny, actually, I even followed her after that shit.”

Shouto, once again, blinks. There are no pictures, then. If that’s the case, he has to admit he’s at a loss as to why Bakugou was so upset a few moments ago.

“Okay. I’m… glad?” It always amazes him how he seems to lose any semblance of eloquence around Bakugou and, not for the first time this evening, Shouto has to hold back a wince.

“I thought you were supposed to be smart, Half and Half,” Bakugou huffs. (How after all these years of knowing each other he can’t come up with a nickname that doesn’t sound like something a first grader would say is beyond Shouto.) “I’m used to that kind of shit and I don’t give a fuck. But you like privacy and shit, I guess. And it’s not like it’s my fucking fault some people are dumb fucks that don’t know what ‘privacy’ means in the first place; it’s just fun to curse them out.”

It takes Shouto a moment to process everything because, as previously established, his brain tends to malfunction around Bakugou. Once he does, however, it’s really damn hard to contain the smile that threatens to grow on his lips.

Because, in the end, Bakugou’s little speech boils down to the fact he feels bad Shouto’s privacy has been breached (or close to being breached? Shouto still isn’t entirely clear on the details of the story). And those Twitter rants he posted, he did it because of Shouto. (Terrible as far as marketing moves go; Shouto expects Bakugou will hear from his manager very soon.)

“Are you capable of holding a conversation without cursing? I thought you were supposed to be smart,” he echoes Bakugou’s own words back at him, as if his heart isn’t pounding in his chest. He knows, though, that Bakugou still isn’t the best at accepting gratitude, so he wagers that’s a safer bet than outright saying ‘thank you’.

And, true to Shouto’s expectations, Bakugou leans back in his chair, relaxing. “Bastard,” he says and for a brief moment, Shouto can swear his eyes go soft.

It’s a good night.

“You goin’?” is the first thing Bakugou says as soon as Shouto answers his call.

“Good morning to you as well. I slept well, thank you, and yourself?”

“Very funny, Icy Hot. So. You going or what?”

“I am. I see no reason not to.”

Bakugou hums but doesn’t say anything.

“Are you?” Shouto tries.

“...Yeah, Kirishima’s been nagging me about it ever since we got the e-mail; he’s annoying.”

It’s Shouto’s turn to let out a noncommittal hum and a semi-awkward silence falls upon them.

“Well,” he says at last. “If that was all you wanted--”

“Wait,” Bakugou cuts him off and Shouto waits. He hears a slow exhale on the other end. “I…,” Bakugou trails off and Shouto’s pretty sure the rate at which his heart is beating can’t be healthy. “I’ll kick your ass.”

What. “What?”

“You heard me,” Bakugou says and his tone is a mixture of anger and embarrassment. “So… get ready. To lose. When I beat you.”

And he ends the call.

Shouto can’t remember the last time he was this confused.

After the game, once the main group splits up, Shouto finds himself sat on the couch next to Bakugou. They’re supposed to be watching some sort of film but Shouto has a hard time focusing on anything other than the man beside him.

They haven’t exactly spoken since The Phone Call (yes, it’s become a capitals-worthy event in Shouto’s mind, that’s how bad he has it) though they haven’t officially fallen out either. At least Shouto doesn’t think so.

He hopes not.

The screams and explosions coming from the TV are loud and obnoxious but somehow it’s all background noise for Shouto. In fact, he’s keenly aware of the silence between himself and Bakugou, and it feels louder than the world around them; it makes no sense even in his head, but it also kind of does. Only a little bit.

He shakes his head and has to wonder if he’s not more of a lightweight than he originally thought.

“You okay, Icy Hot?”

The question is unexpected and Shouto has to turn his head to look at Bakugou to make sure he didn’t simply imagine it. When he does, however, he finds Bakugou staring straight ahead at the TV, the only sign he’s not really paying attention being the furrow of his brows and his clenched jaw.

“Of course.”

Bakugou snorts but doesn’t say anything else which of course means it’s up to Shouto to continue (revive?) the conversation. Except he’s tired, both of those feelings he’s been keeping under wraps for years and of the disappointment that always follows getting his hopes up for nothing. So he lets out a small sigh and gets up to leave.

“Right. Well, have a good night,” he mutters to Bakugou as he passes him by because he’s a boy with an unrequited crush, yes, but that doesn’t erase years of etiquette lessons.

Bakugou says nothing.
