Just returned from holidaying in the Southern Uplands of Scotland where, in between hill-walking, I enjoyed a bit of wildlife photography in the grounds of the remote cottage where I was staying. Unfortunately the dreaded midges were out in full force, but luckily there were a few windy days which kept them at bay; so it was lovely watching the fledglings of certain species including Dunnock, Redstart, Pied Wagtail and the Wheatear seen here when the conditions permitted. Wheatears are a migratory insectivorous species that live in open country and fellside, so are a familiar sight to most fell-walkers and people who venture out in open countryside during the summer months. Pictured here, this juvenile female perched perfectly on a fallen tree branch with a mossy drystone wall forming a lovely backdrop.
