Meet the Andean Cock-of-the-Rock (Rupicola peruvianus). Wondering how this bird got its unique name? It’s a reference to this species’ habit of building nests on rocky outcrops. Found at high elevations in the cloud forests of South America’s Andes Mountains, it can reach lengths of up to 12 in (30.5 cm). Males sport vivid red-orange plumage and a disc-shaped crest, but this bird’s appearance isn’t its only unusual trait. Have you ever squeezed a rubber chicken? Earlier this summer, I met a very curious pair of Black vultures in a Central Texas state park These carrion eating birds are peaceable creatures with excellent eyesight and a sociable disposition. (A friend of mine who runs a bird sanctuary with several rescue vultures told me that wild birds occasionally turn up to hang out on the roof of their aviary.) Usually, Black vultures are wary of people. These two...were not.

Eventually they decided I wasn't that interesting--I was annoyingly alive, for one thing -- and went on to do a bit of sun-worshipping instead.

Delightful creatures, vultures. They get a bad rap.

Birds when you play EDM apparently?? 👇

I have six pet birds and they all seem to like a few different genres of music so I was really curious to see if anyone’s ever done a study on bird’s music preferences to see what they like the most. I’ve found a few sources saying that a lot of birds seem to like pop and classical music, also maybe country? Heard Folk music a few times too, but it all depends on the bird. My birds seem to like when I play them bands like Waterparks. They get so excited. I’ll have to pull up some classical music tomorrow and see if they’re interested in that genre as well. I’m also wondering if the species of bird, and the sounds they naturally make, also effect the music they prefer considering the huge amount of different sounds and calls birds have. The Ringneck doves I had in the past preferred the Christian music station. My current birds, two budgies and four canaries, see to prefer pop music. My friend’s green cheek conure really likes music containing the banjo or similar stringed instruments. I’ve also seen a lot of parrots online who get excited when bands like Slipknot or Korn come on. As a huge music fan and crazy bird nerd, this topic is super interesting to me. If you have a pet bird or know someone with a pet bird, what species of bird are they and what are their favorite music genres? How does your bird respond to the music? Do they dance? Do they start singing or chirping? (My budgies chirp and my canaries sing when I play them certain music.) I’d love to know! 🐤
