Half the year dun!
The club did a ride over a large bridge to Delta BC. The destination was a craft brewery. Once again the link between cycling and beer remains strong. The route chosen had some really poor aspects. I knew this way very well and have crossed that bridge many many times. The leader kept looking at his navigation computer. Insert rant here.
It was stupidly windy. Being in a group helped as you just try to draft as much as possible. The group was not tight by which I mean it was hard to stay in the drafting sweet spot. The person in front of me was always yo-yo-ing which is a bit risky and tiring as you have to keep catching up then slowing down. It is an experience thing.
Once over the bridge the group got separated and confused. One of my old droogs had gone ahead to join the next group up. He eventually waited on this corner where we had to duck under a bridge. He was going to take a picture. It was not tricky in itself, but shit happened. I had been through there a few times before. So I went through and down the path. It took me a while to realize that nobody was following me. I stopped and another rider not in the club passed by me and said someone had crashed. Oh Shit.
I turned around and had to backtrack about a klick and found two of my club waiting there. Where is everyone? "Oh there was a flat I think." Then looking at my old droog who was one of these two he had a huge welt on his lower jaw. "WTF happened?" "Oh I ran into a post. This other guy rode past and cut me off." (The same guy who told me there was a crash) Note to good people. If you see a crash, or even might have caused it please stop.
Weird that the rest of the club was back and helping the flat, but my friend had been injured. Note that whenever someone is hurt, even seriously they always say "I'm fine." His bike had been tweaked and his high tech electronic shifting was dead. Single speed. No going back over the bridge for him. I decided to escort him to the original destination as it was dead flat and easy for a wife to come and find him for rescue.
So I got in front of him and "pulled" him to the big red barn. (Call out to BARNSIDE BREWING https://barnsidebrewing.ca/)
He was doing fine on the bike, but it was good that the route was dead flat and we had a bit of tailwind. Eventually we caught and passed one of our club groups. They were slow as we were not up to going fast.
As we got close I suggested he could take the bike shuttle through the tunnel to get back to his car on dead flat roads. There is a shuttle that runs through a tunnel under the Fraser River. I told him he could look up the schedule on line. So that is what he decided to do. He would ride the shuttle, ride back to his car, drop the injured bike at the LBS (Local Bike Shop) then head home to his wife and dog.
Fun fact. When you get home with an injury wives are always angry. "What did you do now!?"
My ride ended with 89km and change. It was a long day within which I got 26 MET hours. I am up to 1700 MET minutes per week average. Pretty damn good for an old geezer.

Four Winds & Barnside Brewing & Tourism Delta Collaboration Beer Release
FOUR WINDS & BARNSIDE BREWING & TOURISM DELTA COLLABORATION BEER RELEASE We Love Delta is an easy-drinking IPA brewed with our house strain of yeast and Barnside’s own Delta-grown hops and barley. The result is a light-bodied ale with a mild resinous character that combines with tropical notes of pineapple and citrus.
We Love Delta IPA We are beyond excited to announce the launch of this collaboration! We’ve been wanting to work with Delta-grown ingredients for quite some time, and our neighbours at Barnside Brewing were able to help facilitate that dream. We then added to the collaboration by joining with the “We Love Delta” arm of Tourism Delta and the We Love Delta IPA was born! We Love Delta is an…

In my head I move faster than my body.
When they loose their red rubber volley, I transform:
I prance like stag, I pirouette like prima donna, I whirl like wind through wild air — upon the court, I become a gymnasium trickster god, laughing and spritely, more quick and fae than this big bellied body has ever known how to be, I evade every red comet star,
until empty handed and flustered, a dozen sweating boys in white sneakers squeak bewildered at untouchable me
but I was never untouchable, never stag nor prima donna, never wild like whirling air, never tricksy and divine,
I have always been a barnside, large and marked out bright, slapped red on my belly from every missile lobbed.

The Victoria Beer Society invites you to join them for lagers and fresh hops, October 8th and 9th.
Nearly two years into the pandemic and many loyal imbibers have stuck with getting takeaway growlers and bottles, or masking up and retiring with a pint at their local. Obviously, it’s not lost that the global pandemic remains, but this hasn’t stopped the Victoria Beer Society from trying to inspire some normalcy with two events.
With one focusing on Autumn and another which requires patience and time, the VBS is pleased to announce two events, October 8th and 9th, at the 600 Block of David Street.
Lager Than Life, a celebration of lagers.
Tumblr media

From the mouths of the organizers, here’s the backstory and the breakdown.
The Victoria Beer Society is proud to announce its first event since the onset of the pandemic: Lager Than Life on Friday, October 8th 2021 from 5:30pm to 8:30pm. Originally scheduled to take place as part of Victoria Beer Week last year, it was the first event cancelled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Little did we know it would be postponed for more than 18 months!
Lagers have long been the outcast of the craft beer family, often overshadowed by trendier beers like their boastful IPA cousins. We think lagers have earned their place at the craft beer family table. The event will feature close to 20 lager-style beers from BC craft breweries.
To perfectly pair with these crisp brews, the Rock Bay Market’s Bird & Basket will be providing some delicious food options, featuring our special guest, Dumpling Drop.
With the event starting this Friday, October 8th, from 5:30pm - 8:30pm, the organizers invite you to purchase a ticket online, via victoriabeersociety.com, for $35+GST.
If this isn’t enough to get your interest, then consider the following breweries and their lagers, including.
Ace Brewing, Spitfire Lager
Barnside Brewing, Farmer’s Tap Lager
Cannery Brewing, Wildfire Dark Lager
Canoe Brewpub, Helles Lager Marzen
Category 12, Helles Munich Lager
Container Brewing, Noch Mal German Pilsner
Hoyne Brewing, Bier Garten Kolsch & Helios Dortmunder Lager
Longwood Brewery, Independent Pilsner
Moon Under Water Brewpub, Creepy Uncle Dunkel & HOJO Japanese Toasted Rice Lager
Twa Dogs Brewery, Dos Perros Light Lager & Keekin Glass Pilsner
Twin City Brewery, Postscript Munich Helles Lager & Dissimulator German Doppelbock
Vancouver Island Brewing, Hermannator Bock
Whistle Buoy Brewing, Cold Caller Cold IPA
Fresh to Death: Victoria’s Harvest Celebration of Fresh Hop Beers
Following Lager Than Life, the organizers return on Saturday, October 9th, from 2 pm to 5 pm, with Fresh to Death: Victoria’s Harvest Celebration of Fresh Hop Beers. At the 600 Block of David Street, look for some 20 beers showcasing the harvest.
Tumblr media

Again, here are the organizers.
They travel to hop farms all around the province to collect fresh hops that are still wet and juicy from the harvest. Then they race back to their breweries to brew a batch of beer with those hops. These special fresh hop (or wet hop) beers come out a few weeks later and are available for a short time at the beginning of autumn.
The Victoria Beer Society is proud to announce the return of Fresh to Death: Victoria’s Harvest Celebration of Fresh Hop Beers on Saturday, October 9th 2021 from 2 to 5pm.
The event will feature close to 20 beers from BC craft breweries, including fresh hop beers, as well as seasonal beers and Oktoberfest-style lagers, all celebrating the harvest season.
For craft beer connoisseurs, we have created a VIP ticket that includes an exclusive guided tasting of a selection of four fresh hop beers led by Rob Mangelsdorf, Certified Cicerone, and early access to the event. Rob will pick four beers that showcase different flavour profiles, and discuss what makes them special and unique. This VIP event begins at 1pm ahead of the start of the regular event at 2pm.
General Admission tickets are $35+GST or one jump ahead via a VIP Tasting & Early Admission at 1pm for $55+GST. Tickets can be purchased at victoriabeersociety.com.
If you’ve made it this far, we probably don’t need to share what you’ll be missing from this Saturday’s event. But if you need a small bite, then how does 33 Acres, Dageraad Brewing, and Whistle Buoy Brewing strike you?
For more information on this and other events, visit victoriabeersociety.com.

Conversation
Meanwhile, back in Wisconsin Dells ...
(As in Crazy Claws' retreat on the shores of Artificial Lake Delton, know):
CRAZY CLAWS, rather intrigued: Scoots. what exactly explains your name?
SCOOTS, of the Cattanooga Cats, surprised at the question: That's a pretty intriguing question you asked there ... though I have to admit it goes back to younger days, before the Cattanooga Cats, you might say.
CRAZY CLAWS: A nickname, I assume?
SCOOTS: Hardly.
CRAZY CLAWS: But I do have to admit you have quite the storytelling knack.
SCOOTS: That, I admit, goes back to younger days, too. Specifically, following Sunday fried-chicken dinners as could bring out the conversation galore!
CRAZY CLAWS: (Chuckles) So is Cattanooga anywhere near Chattanooga? As in all those "See Rock City" barnsides you see across the South?
SCOOTS: However did you know, to begin with?!

So today we got there just as teacherlady was arriving, which was a surprise. But she did not have her kids with her and literally was less than ten seconds ahead of us, so.
I went ahead and fed the horses. Poor Dazzle did not have her pill again, so I had to get it to give to her. She had an appetite this morning at least, which was nice to see.
We ended up leaving most of the horses inside because teacherlady was worried about how chilly and windy it was, since the paddock runs have no real enclosures. We put out a few in the barnside paddocks since they have coverage from the wind, and I let Hale and Jaeger inside. Partner and I ended up dragging the arena, which we haven’t done in forever. He did most of the work with the driving and everything due to the gears being frozen and me being a terrible driver and not wanting to break anything.
Jaeger looked a thousand times better today. I don’t know what happened, maybe the abscess in his hoof popped and drained out the vent they made, finally.
I got Quattro and put an English saddle on him. He did pretty well, although he was kind of challenging me today, kept trying to spin, was being really crooked in his neck.
Then um, he spun while I was adjusting and concentrating too much on fixing him rather than my own seat, and I just. Slid right off and landed on my ass and he just. Blasted off.
He circled back towards me but the stirrups hitting him freaked him out a lot and he ended up galloping wildly around the arena five or six times before finally hurrying back to me and letting me soothe him. He was very anxious but I was able to get back on. I was actually really surprised: normally when a horse flings you off they have a tendency to repeat that behavior, especially if you’re not firm with them. Quattro, however, took a lot of encouragement to canter, and only did a very slow spin once when I gave him free rein.
He’s the rare horse that would prefer me on his back. That, and the stirrups really scared him, I think.
I took his saddle off while partner tried his brand new saddle with Lacey. It fits Lacey beautifully and it’s tight but not uncomfortable for him, which I was really happy about, although the stirrups needed to be changed out because they were too tight. I got back on him and he was peachy after that. We  zoomed around and got sweatier than we should have, but I wanted to make sure he got some of the stress out and I wanted to make the best of things, so we did some flying lead changes and then some walk pre-pirouettes, since I haven’t figured out how to get him to switch shoulders yet.
It was really good, in the end. I spent a lot of time with him in the crossties but he was happy just to stand there, get attention, eat a candy cane with me, and calm down. He’s so attached to me. Well, we’re so attached to each other, really. I feel bad when I stand ten feet away and talk to someone else rather than right beside him.
I’m glad that we have that, though.
