You mentioned peafowl are on the higher end of omnivorous fowl species. Do they 'prey on' or act aggressive to other farm birds (ducks, chickens, quails, pigeons, so on)? Do things such as farm fowl breeds or temperament affect those interactions?
They don't attack other adult birds as prey or anything, but I have at least one friend who hen to pen his turkeys because the toms and peacocks would get into bloody fights if not. Mine always got on fine with turkey hens, but I never tried to keep any toms with them.
I used to house my peafowl with some bobwhite quail, because you can do that with chickens and they'll clean up spilled feed the chickens scratch out onto the floor. I saw a few standoffs between the bobwhites and the peafowl, but despite weighing 6 ounces, the bobwhites always held their own because peafowl are weenies sometimes. However, I thought at first the quail were just young, and then that they must certainly be stressed, because I didn't get a single egg all summer..... until I caught Eris horking down a whole quail egg one day, and realized I HAD been getting eggs all summer, the damn peafowl had just been eating them as quick as they'd find them. So the quail got their own pen.
I tried putting a couple of coturnix quail in, instead, since their eggs are bigger and more camouflaged. But the peafowl would have straight up killed the adult birds, since the coturnix don't run or fight, so I had to take them out again.
Peafowl can get along with chickens, but the disease transfer between them (chickens to peafowl) can kill peafowl, so most people don't. Early on, while we were still building pens, I had a few chickens in with peas in the first pen and the adults again were fine, and the eggs were too big to eat. ....the bantam chicks, however, were not. They got eaten.
Curiously, the peas always liked the pigeons. I don't know if they ever ate any eggs, but the pigeons kept their babies up in nests until they were Bird Sized, and the peafowl didn't chase them around on the ground, the adults or the fledglings, even when I tossed out grains and seeds for them. They DID eat the carolina wren fledglings that were raised in their coop, despite my best efforts to repeatedly remove that nest before there were eggs. That mom was DETERMINED to have her babies in The Worst Location Ever.
So, will peafowl act aggressive toward other farm fowl? Some of them, in some situations. Will peafowl hunt other smaller farm birds for food and sport? If they're small and defenseless enough.

Ancient Ducks
We need to talk about how the Donald Duck universe sometimes works like looking at history through a window. Cos like, at first you got the old weekley comics. They were published in the 1940’s and meant to show daily life. By now, some of them have become far less relatable, because times change.
Tumblr media
Although you don’t really think about it when reading it, todays world is much different. Most normal men don’t walk around in suits everyday and I bet if you’re a girl (like me) reading this, you’ve never went into a fancy hat shop if they even still exist at all.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Moving on to the characters themselves. None of the characters have changed either, physically. I mean look at Gladstone in his first comic debut in 1948 and what he normally looks like in the Topolino comics now. The suit? Ancient! The hairstyle? Even more ancient!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(I’d say he’s somewhere on this spectrum? Goofy ahh hairstyle ngl)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This man’s tophat? Ancient! Old! I haven’t seen someone wear a tophat in my life ever, if it wasn’t for my 7th grade Christmas carol musical. And since we’re talking about Scrooge. If you think about it, his goldrush era 1896-1897 was like how for us the seventies (1970) are now. Think about that. Here is the math if u didn’t get it:
1947 (Scrooge is created by Barks and people read about him for the first time) - 1897 (goldrush) = 50 years
2023 (present) - 1970 = 53
He would’ve made his fortune by digging gold while listening to David Bowie or The Cure.
Tumblr media
And last but not least, the Duckatti. If you’re not familiar with this phenomenon, cause you only watch Ducktales; Donald has been driving the same goofy car since the 40’s (or even 30’s if i’m wrong).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It was based on that car on the left, forgot the name. The fact that he still (somewhat) drives a car from the 30’s must mean that thing is a fortune worth by now. Maybe 90 years ago there was was some inside joke and the Bantam was like the Fiat Panda of the 30’s. Either way as the decades pass, it gets only funnier he’s still driving around in a can on wheels.
This was just my way to say how much I love history and Donald Duck comics, thank you for reading.

What’s your favorite breed of duck? Favorite breed of pig?
filed under ASKS THAT MAKE ME SMILE THE INSTANT I READ THEM
for ducks.. silver bantams are like if you placed a mallard in a hydraulic press and squished it a little. they’re cute but funny guys. looking up photos on google and this made me laugh out loud. how can you not be enchanted by this
Tumblr media
(canvasbacks get an honorable mention because they’re freaky but fun looking. my dad’s a hunter and we used to have one on display in our house—i know ☹️—for the longest time. plus it’s what Daffy says he is so. cmon. but also to be fair he says he’s a lot of things)
for pigs: KUNEKUNE!!!!!!! they’re so cute. i know i am deliberately using a photo as a baby to enunciate the cuteness factor, they are all cute, but look at this guy.
Tumblr media
the correct answer, of course, is "all of them" for both. to the surprise of absolutely nobody ducks and pigs are some of my favorite animals around... but isn't the world a better place knowing that ducks can have regional accents? that pigs wag their tails? the answer is YES

I LOVE YOUR CHICKENS!!! I'm a big chicken lover too!! What breeds are they? Do they have names?
YEAHHH SO DO I <33 Ohh boy here we go...
Our head rooster is Shmuel, and he's a rhode island red brahma mix! Then we have his son, Santa, who's mom was an olive egger! Then we have Rocket, the swedish flower hen rooster!
We have Big Red and Mavis, the rhode island reds, Janet the easter egger, Helen and Athena the olive eggers, Three ISA browns we can't tell apart so they're just the ISA browns-- Then we have Mama Karen the black jersey giant, Wendy and Odette the silver laced wyandottes, Annie and Rat Bird the blue stars, and my favorite girl Pumpkin who we dont know the breed of-- We also have Dweeb and Goldie the buff orpingtons.
Then we have Mulberry and Morrow--the first two we hatched ourselves. And we also have Cheese and Crackers, who are identical, but Cheese is a barred rock and Crackers is Mama Karens and Shmuels daughter. We also have two unnamed DweebxShmuel babies that we can't tell apart so we call them the Dweeblings.
Finally, we have Corn, the bantam silkie rooster, and his bantam silkie hens: Batman, Fifi, and Beans. (we also have Rampage the drake, and Momo and Elon Muscovy the duck hens) All my beloved creatures <3

I don’t know what happened, but we’re becoming farm people. I just spent 20 minutes comparing different kids of manure.
Yesterday I saw that my favorite farm stand had opened for the season and I squealed and Justin was like why don’t I build you a fenced in garden and you just grow your own? A bit later I was talking about quail for their tiny adorable speckled eggs and getting a rabbit just to use its droppings in the garden and Justin asked “why are you talking about quail and a rabbit? Our next animals are goats.”
So that’s what we’re doing, living out our farm fantasy hahaha. Justin discovered that goats eat poison oak and that people pay big money to rent them out to eat excess vegetation and Justin is sold. I’m not ready for goats, seems like a big responsibility, but apparently sometime soon. And apparently their droppings are more beneficial than rabbit droppings, but so are chickens if you compost them right.
Why am I this way? What happened to me? Instagram? I had chickens in Texas and I loved my girls, but I wasn’t this level of obsessed with them. But now I see all these different breeds and characteristics and egg colors and I have become a chicken hoarder. I had to stop going to my favorite tractor supply because I became friends with the manager and he kept getting me to take his store’s injured birds home. So far we have rehomed 4 aggressive roosters (but kept our sweetheart silkie roo) and have 18 total. Three starlight eggers, three buff orpingtons, three mystic marans, two Easter eggers, two silkies, two booted bantams, a leghorn, a rhode island red, and a silver-laced sebright. We’ll get medium green eggs, light green eggs, maybe some blue if we’re lucky. And lighter brown, medium brown, and dark dark brown from the marans. And smaller cream colored ones from the bantam ladies. And the leghorn will lay the standard white you’re used to from the store, fun fact I hatched fertilized eggs from the store once and leghorns are what hatched!
I saw some reel that said that chickens are the gateway farm animal and ding ding ding. Once you have chickens you start looking up guard animals and then you want a goose. Then you go to a feed store and see that they have turkens (naked neck chickens that are social/sweet and are so ugly they’re cute), turkeys, ducks, and quails. I mean ducks are stinky and messy but I’ll take the rest please, thank you.
My grandma was an animal hoarder, is this genetic? She had an actual aviary and llamas and cats. We had animals growing up but I remember begging forever for a Guinea pig, it’s not like we had a farm. But at one point I was breeding Guinea pigs and fish. And incubating chicken eggs. So maybe it is in my genetics. A 10 year old asking for fish breeding supplies is not on my radar, what kid does that? Maybe this side of me has lied dormant under some depression fog. I don’t know.
Justin being on board is dangerous though. He didn’t even say anything when he came home from his work trip to 6 new chickens living in his office. He wasn’t as pleased about my “pointless” fish though, but I am loving my little aquarium. It’s next to my aerogarden and it’s such a happy little corner.
Anyway.
We need to push back the retaining wall in the backyard. Well *need* might be a little strong. But the wood panels are rotted out and need to be replaced. Right now it’s 2.5 high and the field of poison oak beyond is starting to travel down and I am so severely allergic my arms are constantly covered is weeping wounds. We’re going to push it back til it’s at 4 ft and then build the chicken run, originally it was supposed to be 10 by 8, but now I’m thinking it needs to be 12 by 8 minimum.
We’ve been chipping away at excavating ourselves but with between the kids, the boulders, and my rash reaction it’s just not worth it, we need someone with a machine so we hired someone to come excavate it next week. With the space, our backyard will eventually be dining area w pergola, chicken run/coop, fenced in garden area, swing set and jungle gym for the kids, goat shed/area, then Justin’s big shed that he hopes to break ground on this summer. When we’re done with that we’re going to build steps up to access our side yard, clear and level the clearing, and then put pavers or bricks down for a fire pit area.
I am absolutely obsessed with our property. I want to utilize as much of it as we can, and I never want to take for granted that we are lucky to have land and live somewhere breathtakingly beautiful. Life isn’t perfect by any means, but I still feel like I’m living the dream.

You’ve probably gone over this before but tumblr’s search engine sucks butt. So, what would each culture’s staple crops and livestock (for both meat and byproducts) be? How much would globalization come into play, like how irl potatoes are originally from South America but have become one of the most important staple foods across the world?
Staple crops and livestock vary throughout the Provinces due to climate and geography, though trade over the centuries has meant that ingredients like saltrice from Morrowind and honey from Skyrim are in constant circulation around the continent. Nonetheless, here are some uniquely local ingredients you'll find across Tamriel.
Altmer
Summerset's temperate climate makes it the ideal place to grow all sorts of exotic fruit, especially stone fruit. From peaches to lychees, nectarines to cherries, Summerset produces the largest quantities of these fruits (with the trade embargo around the Great War and Dragon Crisis making them an extremely sought-after prize). And don't forget the wine! Summerset is also famed for its gorgeous vineyards and even more gorgeous wines. However, juicy and flavourful grapes are beloved by almost anybody, making them a valuable staple crop too.
Livestock in Summerset is nothing particularly exciting. Merino sheep are farmed for their wool, which is a luxury export beloved by northern Provinces, while meat comes in the form of cattle and chickens. However, High Elves particularly love their wild-caught fish and herons, which are populous on their home island.
Argonians
Once again, fruit is a major export from Black Marsh, but the fertile (if hostile) region is home to some of Tamriel's best agricultural soil. From cocoa and coffee beans, saltrice and coconuts, to padan and banana leaves and more, you'll find all sorts of wonderful plant-based ingredients in Black Marsh. However, something that has gained in popularity following the Argonian diaspora has been palm wine, a potent alcoholic beverage.
As for livestock, you'll find bantam guar, guar lizards, various poultry, goats, and even farmed frogs and lizards to be popular. Sheep and cattle are far less popular due to the upkeep required for them to stay healthy in the swampy environment, making beef and mutton less popular and more expensive than in other Provinces.
Bosmer
The Bosmer are famed for their meat and animal byproducts, particularly from timber mammoths and sugar mammoths. Whether it's meat, pelts, or milk, these beasts are much beloved by the Wood Elves who take great care in rearing them.
Other popular exports from Valenwood include alcoholic beverages like rotmeth and jagga, as well as kopi luwak- a luxurious type of coffee made from beans found in civet cat excrement, thus making them Green Pact-friendly. And of course, Valenwood produces some of Tamriel's finest cocoa beans, mostly used for export. However, have you truly lived until you've tried salted sugar mammoth caramelised milk chocolate from Woodhearth?
Bretons
In High Rock, sheep and cattle are the most popular livestock to farm due to their versatility, with a constant demand for their meat, horns, skins, and milk. While it's nothing exciting, the animals in the region are usually grass-fed and free range, spanning acres of farmland (which can sometimes result in cultists and the like infringing upon the livelihood of livestock). Chickens, geese, turkeys, and ducks are also popular for their meat, down, and eggs, with High Rock producing some of Tamriel's best duck meat.
With regards to staple crops, wheat is a major export and features heavily in Breton cuisine, especially in bread.
Dunmer
The volcanic ash of Morrowind is key to its success in growing all manner of weird and wonderful crops. Market stalls across Vvardenfell and Blacklight bustle with sellers touting mushrooms of all kinds, saltrice, comberry, marshmerrow, hackle-lo, canis root, and much more, all of which are consumed locally as well as across Tamriel.
Regarding livestock, it should come as no surprise that the big money is in bug farming. Kwama mines produce cuttle, scuttle, scrib jelly, and kwama eggs, making them the backbone of Morrowind's mages and chefs alike. Nix-hounds and guar are raised both by town Dunmer and Ashlanders, while wild nix-ox is also popular for those who can afford it.
Imperials
Cyrodiil spans terrain from the snowy Jerall Mountains to the swamps of Blackwood. As a result, the Province is relatively self-sufficient in that it produces the bulk of its own consumption, from livestock to greens. Speaking of greens, battaglir, a type of weed, is a staple in the Imperial diet, making wild-foraged and farmed battaglir a key crop in the region. Like Summerset, Cyrodiil is also famed for itswines, and is proud of its unique grapes of every size, flavour, and colour (including ones that taste like cotton candy).
Livestock in Cyrodiil is about as generic as can be: cows, sheep, goats, poultry, and horses. While meat is a staple part of the Imperial diet, milk is also important as it is used to make the cream and cheeses so prized by the Province.
Khajiit
What don't the Khajiit grow or rear? From Southern Elsweyr's rich moon sugar and rice paddies to the North's edible cacti and tea, the Province is full of exotic and scrumptious delights that are highly prized across Tamriel. Ingredients are valuable both raw and processed, and form the backbone of the Khajiiti economy. Samar Pekoe tea, for example, is wild-harvested from caves and is beloved by tea aficionados across the continent, and fetches a hefty price for its rarity. Pellitine cacao and coffee beans are also a staple in any self-respecting chef's kitchen.
In terms of livestock, you'll find guar, poultry, beef, and goat to be popular, as well as wild game like jerboas, terror birds, antelope, and addaxes. Game meat can often be purchased from Bandaari nomads, who hunt the animals themselves. Whether fresh or dried into jerky, who doesn't want some moon sugar-cured addax jerky for the road?
Nords
Foreigners in Skyrim are often shocked by the range of produce we're capable of producing in our cold and often inhospitable lands. Fish and horker are consumed in great amounts locally, as well as being one of the Province's major exports. Goat from the Reach, cattle from Whiterun, and honey from the Rift are always in high demand.
Apples and jazbay grapes are probably the most valuable crops in Skyrim, followed by wheat and other fruits and vegetables. The former two are used in cider and wine, both of which are valued across the Provinces.
Orcs
Wrothgarian Orcs differ from Betnikh Orcs who differ from Wood Orcs and so on... so in this case, it really varies. For Wrothgarian Orsimer, echatere is the main source of meat and milk, while in Betnikh it's fish, and in Valenwood, timber mammoth. All these groups also enjoy game, from rabbit and wolf to pheasant and venison, which features heavily in regional Orcish cuisine. Wild honey from Betnikh is also another notable animal product that bears mention here.
In terms of crops, there aren't many of note aside from valuable herbs and spices. Frost mirriam, which is also loved by alchemists, and wrathberries, known for their violently bitter taste unless prepared correctly, are two of the most important plants you'll find for sale at any stronghold.
Redguards
I've said it before and I'll say it again: goat, goat, and more goat. Unless you're a coastal Redguard with access to seafood, it's likely that your main source of meat and milk will come from goats. Whether it's feta or kebabs, it's almost always goat meat, as they wander all through Hammerfell like they own the place. However, Redguards are also renowned for breeding horses, and the uh... faulty ones are generally turned into food. Spiced horse blood sausage and spreadable horse 'nduja are a staple in households across Hammerfell.
With staple crops, you'll find that corn, coconuts, palm fruit and oil, bananas, coffee, cinnamon and other spices, and cocoa are plentiful. These are all consumed in great amounts within the Province, but are also highly prized across Tamriel.

Bantam Cock - Jake Thackray
He was a fine upstanding bantam-cock So brisk, and stiff, and spry... With a springy step, and a jaunty plume, And a purposeful look in his eye In his little black blinking eye!
So I took him to the coop and introduced him to My seventeen wide-eyed hens And he tupped and he tupped as a hero tupps, And he bowed to them all, and then, He up and took 'em all again!
Then upon the peace of my ducks and geese He boldly did intrude And with glazed eyes and opened mouths They bore him with fortitude... And a little bit of gratitude!
He jumped my giggling guinea-fowl! He thrust his attentions upon Twenty hysterical turkeys, And a visiting migrant swan! And the bantam thundered on!
He groped my fan-tail pigeon doves, My lily-white Columbine, And as I was locking up the budgerigar, He jumped my parrot from behind! And it was sittin' on me shoulder at the time!
But all of a sudden, with a gasp and a gulp, He clapped his hand(?) to his head! He lay flat on his back with his feet in the air; My bantam-cock was dead! And the vultures circled overhead!
What a noble beast! What a champion cock! What a way to live and die! As I dug him a grave to protect his bones, From those hungry buzzards in the sky, The bantam opened up his eyes!
He gave me a wink, and a terrible grin, The way that rapists do.... He said, "Do you see them silly daft buggers up there? They'll be down in a minnit 'er two! They'll be down in a minnit 'er two!"
@curseofmeatthawsmoth thought youd enjoy :^P

It’s a very hot day here and based on that sheer fact I decided to host a pool party for my ducklings (and their tiny old siblings the bantam chicks)
Tumblr media
Everyone was pretty cautious at first…
Tumblr media
But eventually they began to filter outside of their container. They first flocked to their usual food and water bowls:
Tumblr media
But eventually someone discovered the big pool. The initial “ramp” did not seem to help much, but the advent of Duck Stairs provided me with this unfiltered, noisy joy!
Everyone seems delighted with this little outting, and it’s a lovely way to spend a Saturday evening.
