Jssjsjsjsjsj I saw TBOSBAS last night and not to be a huge asshole but trained actors just really fucking do it for me . I have to read the book now and watch Coriolanus absolutely unhinged inner monologue and descent into madness (also I think Sejanus was one of my favorite performances and they were in love no? As far as Coriolanus can love anything ?) Yeah and just as someone who loves the original trilogy and watches it a least once a year this just absolutely cloaks it . The writing alone… Was this just a better adaption?? ( the original cast needed this )- I’ve not been impressed in a cinema since I saw 1917 ( which I saw three times in a row and which is not even close to doing what TBOSBAS did for me)

Haven't heard people really talk about this, other than complaining about that one moment in Revenge Party, but personally I hated the cinematography in Mean Girls (2024).
My main issue was the TikTok lighting and the emptiness of every shot.
For one thing, in terms of TikTok lighting, I guess it's just something I have to get used to in film. Netflix has been using it for a bit now in terms of films like He's All That. It rubs me the wrong way because it feels cringey (at least for me personally), but aside from that I can't really give constructive criticism, it's just a "me-issue".
In terms of the emptiness, I can actually offer an explanation as to why that bothers me. American high schools, or honestly, most high schools, are busy places. You've got students running around, busy hallways, teachers chatting this way and that and shaking salads and talking through bites, vice principles wandering and yelling, kids getting dragged out of bathrooms for vaping, smoking, or drugs or sexual acts. School is busy! And I don't see that anywhere in the 30 or so minutes that I managed to complete before exiting the film. It genuinely feels so jarring.
There's little to nothing in the background, the foreground, or anywhere quite frankly. The students are all incredibly spaced out as if there are no cliques other than the Plastics or whatever other groups are mentioned in the introductory cafeteria scene. AND SPEAKING OF CAFETERIAS!!! The cafeteria is so empty?? Like it's genuinely insane how empty it is. The tables are so small and minimalistic, like you can fit five people tops. There's no decorations on the walls, no flags, no posters, nothing.
Now I understand minimalism as a design choice in certain films. There are whole subsets of genres that thrive on this design choice. Clean Space, for example, as a Sci-Fi aesthetic. It's built on minimalism, it wouldn't exist without it. But, in terms of describing a busy high school? Maybe it's just me, but I don't feel that it fits. It doesn't make sense to me as a design choice.
Anyways. The film has its issues for sure, but overall, it is camp, and Renee is mother. Also the Letterboxd reviews are so funny I cannot express that enough! And despite the bad camera angle during Revenge Party, you have to admit it's worth a good chuckle. Not to mention John Hamm teaching sex ed, like honestly I didn't care for the jokes that much but the concept is hilarious.

I still don’t get why El should break up with Mike, she looks happy with him :/
For me the Duffers can’t write, that’s it
I would have agreed on S3, but S4 brought up the issue of Mike being unable to tell her he loves her and how she feels like he's just idolizing her for her powers and by how that whole issue was handled, it feels to me like his respose wasn't satisfactory in the slightest.
Not only was he unable to tell her he loved her as she expressed her doubts and cried in front of him when she was without powers, when he does tell her he loves her it's prompted by someone else, during a moment of emotional stress, quoting someone else, STILL talking about her powers, when she has her powers back. Not to mention, the whole speech is meant to urge her to fight.
That monologue didn't solve the problem AT ALL. If anything, it confirmed her fears.
Which is why, if I was her, I would break up with him. Because he doesn't seem to understand the problem and that alone would make me feel like he doesn't really love me for ME.
Not to mention his monologue paralleled what papa told her before he died. Since her whole character arc is to leave behind everything that trapped her in her life, to finally find herself, by the way they framed the whole situation with Mike, it also feels like she should leave Mike behind too.
I wouldn't be saying this if they handled S4 differently, but right now? They are not very good together.
I mean, Lumax had that super cute, super simple but meaningful scene where Max laughs after a long time and Lucas goes "I missed it. Your laugh" and it's so powerful because you can tell he SEES her, missed her, they aren't even shown half as much but their relationship got such good development.
Can you imagine S4 Mike telling that to El? Not once did he mention a personality trait or soemthing about her that didn't relate to her powers. He romanticized their first meeting (we see that when he says "It's not fate" too) and talked extensively about what she can do. And when it came to actually talk about who she is, he could only say she's a superhero. Which ties in with the whole am i a monster? doubt she had. Except she already solved that issue. She knows she's not a monster, she left the real monster behind when papa died. She didn't need Mike to tell her that, in fact, he had already told her that when they fought the first time. She needed Mike to love her for something OTHER than that.
He didn't.
He didn't mention one single thing that wouldn't make her doubt his feelings.
The issue she had with him at the beginning of the season? Still there. The difference between his arguments during their first fight and his monologue is just that he added "i love you" (prompted).
So yes, if I was El i wouldn't be happy with that. I would only feel like there's no return. He failed her. Romantically.
She's happy with him because she does love him, but the point here is: does that suffice to keep the relationship going? Is their relationship what she wants? And I think at this point it's not. It keeps falling short compared to her expectations. She feels like she has to be someone "cool" to keep him interested (she lied about her situation when she didn't have her powers).
So yeah, I think to fully find herself and her value beside her powers, she should break up with Mike.
I'm not saying Mike is a bad person (well he wasn't good either this season but that's beside the point), I'm saying he has overly romantizised circumstances (based on what he said) and his inferiority complex doesn't help their situation. They bring each other down without really intending to.
And that's not good for her. She's working on herself, but he needs to work on himself too, so right now they are onto two different pages, and that would most naturally lead to a break up to me.

“Why does everybody think I’m so wild? I’m not wild. I happen to stumble onto wildness. It gets in my path.” Cookie Mueller
"Cookie looked like Janis Joplin-meets-Jayne Mansfield, a redneck hippie with a little bit of glamour drag thrown in. She never led a safe life, unsafe was her middle name. She lived on the edge, always." John Waters
Born on this day 75 years ago: vivacious bad girl, writer, go-go dancer, advice columnist, art critic, drug dealer, globe-trotter and avant-garde New York scene-maker Cookie Mueller (née Dorothy Karen Mueller, 2 March 1949 – 10 November 1989). She’s a fiercely charismatic presence in early John Waters "gutter films" like Multiple Maniacs (1970), Pink Flamingos (1972) and Female Trouble (1974). Her close confidante, photographer Nan Goldin would describe Mueller as “the most fabulous woman I’d ever seen ... She was the starlet of the Lower East Side: a poetess, a short-story writer, she starred in John Waters’ early movies. She was sort of the queen of the whole downtown social scene.” (Unsurprisingly, Goldin has an eye for vivid detail. In the wrenching 2022 documentary All the Beauty and the Bloodshed, she recalls that the first time she met Cookie in Provincetown in the 1970s, Mueller was wearing vintage Springolator heels held together with safety pins!). I highly recommend investigating Mueller’s wry and elegant autobiographical musings like Walking Through Clear Water in a Pool Painted Black or Garden of Ashes (recently reissued) – or Chloe Griffin’s excellent 2014 biography Edgewise: A Picture of Cookie Mueller. Pictured: portrait of Mueller by Bob Berg.
