Ok now we're just taking the piss right? Right?

Once again this sort of thinking is removing a fundamental character arc that makes this story what it is. A big part of Aang's journey, especially in season 1, but tbh it does return in later seasons too, is accepting that he is the Avatar, and that he's the only one who can end this war. During the whole first season he is in complete denial about who he is and what he's supposed to do, which is why in most of this season there's no sense of urgency, and then once Aang gets faced with a very real, very close deadline he panics. This makes it even more brutal when in season 3, after accepting this responsibility, he gets faced with the reality of failure. He runs away again, this time not because he doesn't want responsibility, but because he knows how heavy his responsibility is and he doesn't want to burden anyone else with it. Removing the first aspect, aka running away and denying responsibility, it in turn also removes the heavy emotion from his later arc.

It keeps surprising me that people who claim to be such fans of the original seem to completely miss the point of most of this story? Like how could you look at Sokka learning about women's rights, Aang learning to accept responsibility, and Katara's motherly warmth which happened because how young she was when she had to step into a motherly role, and think "well we should remove that." You're taking out all of character development and going purely off of plot (which isn't gonna be nearly as good without the character development!)

Atla is probably one of the most analyzed and picked apart story, has one of the most long running loyal fanbases, people are STILL making thinkpieces about this show, and you manage to still misunderstand so much???

the one i posted were really tiny and i was working anyway on these. it just took me a bit to get it done :D uhm... so here me playing dressup... with yue... again... sorry yue...

if i have to explain mayself... my thought process is basically... yue is the moon. so her dress is either the moon or the enviorment around or below her. and.... you know... fish... -tries not to feel my ex profs glaring at me like "elaborate more dang it"-

Many, many, many, many, many hours later, my capstone project is complete: a mall full of my favorite guys!

Not gonna wax too poetic about my creative process because that's what the artist statement is for, but I will say that this was the most involved, ambitious, and creatively fulfilling piece I've ever gotten to do. OCs, cartoon characters, video game protagonists, DnD player characters, we've got it all here! Each of these characters is special to me in one way or another, and I had an absolute blast cramming them all into one canvas.

Tumblr got nowhere near displaying the full image so I had to condense the hell out of it to get the whole thing on there. If you want a closeup of any character in full resolution just sent me an ask! I would love to hold my little guys up to the camera for you :)

And yeah I'm gonna tag every piece of media represented. If you're seeing this in your tag, one of your fellas is in here somewhere!

Nimona is a movie coming out tomorrow, June 30th that’s been 7 years in the making! It’s based off the tumblr webcomic turned best-selling graphic novel of the same title.

It was originally being made by Blue Sky Studios and was going to have a theatrical release aimed around 2021, but after Disney acquired them and shut the studio down the film was scrapped. The movie was only about 10 months away from being finished, and it was shut down after Disney execs had pushed back against the queer themes/characters in the movie. BUT, Annapurna studios picked the film back up and finished it!!

Onto the film itself!

The movie follows Nimona, a spunky shapeshifter who teams up with the knight Ballister Boldheart (previously Ballister Blackheart in the graphic novel) after he was framed for a crime he didn’t commit and sent on the run. His ex-boyfriend, Ambrosius Goldenloin, is tasked with hunting them down, but is conflicted between fulfilling his duty and his feelings.

The animation style is stunning and dynamic, and the visuals are so so good!! I would highly recommend checking out the movie and supporting it when it comes out, this is a big step for stylized animation and also queer rep in animation as well!

But the best part is that it just looks like an amazing movie!!

Please...Aang compared the murder of Katara's mother to him losing Appa for a little while. He was judgmental, unempathetic, and this is one of the few episodes where the narrative actually points out that he was wrong. Katara says out of her own mouth that he was wrong about what she needed. I shouldn't be surprise at takes like this, though. It was Katara actually speaking for herself about what she felt and what she needed, of course people are going to ignore her 🙄.

It really makes my butt itch when people take legitimate criticisms of Aang and boil it down to shipper feels. Listen, if you like Aang, fine. You don't have to agree with every take, but if the only thing you can say to people explaining the reasons they don't like Aang in explicit detail is you only think that because you don't like Kataang, then you are very, VERY bad at arguing.

Also...anti-Aang propaganda??? Propaganda????

More ATLA au

I have Twilight as an earth bender. He lives in a part of the Earth Kingdom that has been largely conquered and occupied by the Fire Nation already. I think he'd be the second to join Avatar Wild. He has broken manacles on his wrists in a couple of the sketches because he gets imprisoned by the Fire Nation for being part of the Resistance before he meets Wild.

Despite meeting a skilled earth bender fairly early on, I think Wild struggles to learn earth bending (or any of of the other bending styles (both pre and post 100 year nap actually)). Plus with amnesia, anything he did learn is lost, at least temporarily. He has some emotional/mental things to work through before he's actually able to start learning.

Other notes:

Wind primarily fights with a boomerang. He uses air bending to gain greater control of it and hit multiple targets at one time, inspired by the boomerangs from Wind Waker and Twilight Princess.

The light spirits from Twilight Princess (at least Ordona and Faron) look like more than one animal so I think they'd fit in with the animals from the ATLA universe. Step aside Ordonian goats and welcome in the wolfgoats. Do you still milk them? I don't know.
