Who would I be if I hadn’t experienced abuse, sexual assaults, bullying, rapes, my trauma? Is a question I’ve asked myself often throughout my life.

But recently this question has changed. I wonder now, who I would be if I hadn’t decided to start paining women who were survivors, survivors of domestic abuse, survivors of assaults, survivors of rape, survivors of sexual abuse. Listening to their stories, visualizing each immerging from a cave of despair and darkness. I paint their bodies in the colors that I see in my minds of the emotions, expression, energy and strength I feel as I hear each story as I see each women stand before me without any covering, naked, bare and raw. I have seen and experienced their hunger as they hope to claim their autonomy, their light, their pleasure and joy back.  The paintings I create breath light into the darkest parts of each women’s life. But more than that, each and every painting, each and every story that I hear and hold space for breaths light into my own darkest moments. I am compelled to paint women who are healing from horrific deeds because I KNOW that seeing themselves as art has the capability to alter how they physically see themselves for the rest of their lives. How they can take back their own autonomy, their own pleasure for themselves. That when they stand in front of me naked sharing their truths. Their stories and body create words and energy that I weave together to create a pathway to healing and magic that nothing else can. Not because I am exceptional but because each of our survival stories builds something within us. Without this work, I wouldn’t have found looking at my shadows, I wouldn’t have found some of closest friends. I wouldn’t have created opportunity after opportunity for myself. I wouldn’t have fought for my work, for me to be seen. To play with edges I never knew could exist for me. Every brush stroke, every women I hold space for, breaths LIFE, breathes LIVING into my own life, and hopefully theirs too.

I often get the question: do you think Berlin was instrumental in your path as a lettering artist? Moving to Berlin was triggering in my decision to change gears in my career (I was previously a graphic designer) and start my own lettering business. Although I think there’s nothing intrinsically to Berlin that set me for success, being new to the city allowed me to reinvent myself and and gave me the extra push to give it all. I had to: ✔️make new friends ✔️find a new place to live ✔️learn a new language Therefore taking the leap of going solo and shifting direction in my work seemed *just* like one more thing among all those✔️ I thank to Berlin for being the place where I got to do such a transcendental change in my life, and I’ll always be grateful to the typographic community that welcomed me and made friends with me. What should I say, which story to tell? How a police officer in #SanFrancisco was rolling a spliff, while i was painting. I #puffpuff passed inhaled a little, while he was chilling me.l, telling me about his security work he was doing for Dave chappelle. When i tagged the toilets from the Lufthansa’s flight from first flight back from the the states, in 1990/ 91. I found just #spraycanart/ and #subwayart books with in the Miami & LA bookshops. I already had those at home in Germany. So i invested my traveling money in bullets for the shooting ranch visit in dade-county, in big red cinnamon wrigleys chewing gums, a replica from a ww1 iron cross second class ( i already had a Original at home ( in reminiscence to my greatgrandfather)), and lots of illustrated books on the american civilwar. I love good history books they amplify & height the feeling of presence & cozy ness when being at home. Like a good painting with in muted colors. Anyway, tagged the Lufthansa airplane toilet. Inspired from the tags, I saw in Nyc in Transfer, by American G.i.s which came back from the first desert storm service. Or that I saw in Jugoslavia & Königsberg (Russian Oblast) just Metallica fan sprayings. (Naive). Hidden, under a few bridges. That was 1991. Hmm. how i bribed a milan taxi driver, so he stopped via phone/ his oldboys network the plane, so i could catch my flight. I had lots of my paintings with me, canvases. No money for a second ticket. Broke, like a mf. I had a exhibition with in Italy, toured Italy painted walls, came from rome.
