Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom 4K Ultra HD Review

Jason Momoa reprises his role as the King of the Seven Seas in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, which comes 5 years after the original film was released. Once again Aquaman’s most notable rogue, Black Manta, is back seeking revenge for his deceased father. This time, Manta wields the power of the mythic Black Trident to unleash an ancient and sinister force. Hoping to end his reign of terror, Aquaman makes an unlikely alliance with his brother, Orm, the former king of Atlantis. Setting aside their differences, they join forces to protect their kingdom and save the world from irreversible destruction.

I must admit, even though I consider myself a superhero aficionado, it has been 5 years since the first solo Aquaman flick hit the theaters and remembering certain details regarding the movie were hazy for me at best. Fortunately, there are flashbacks to some of the pertinent moments from the first outing. As in the original movie, there is a healthy dose of action and adventure sprinkled with some hit and miss humor. I enjoyed the unlikely bond between the brothers, and it is hard to argue that Black Manta is one of the most iconic super villains to hit the silver screen in a comic book flick in recent memory. Unfortunately, Manta is paired with a far less interesting character named Dr. Shin (Randall Park) and a collection of henchmen and women with little to no depth in this underwater adventure.

The visuals of this film are the real treat, and with the 4K format they really shine. The underwater computer-generated sequences are particularly aesthetically pleasing, but I really wish this movie stuck to scenes beneath the sea. There are tons of incredibly interesting creatures in the ocean that an Aquaman movie has yet to tap into. A number of times the movie gets caught trying to copy other films, particularly Star Wars, however, this movie lacks the interesting intertwining plot points and character development of the sci-fi classic. Even with the beautiful 4K eye candy most of its visuals project, there are the occasional, (Joss Whedon) Justice League-esque CGI that leaves you wondering, “where did that come from?”. I also did not care for Aquaman being out of his classic orange and green costume for most of the movie, as I felt that it robbed me of that superhero feel.

VIDEO QUALITY 📽️ : A

The 2160p transfer looks glorious, even with the aforementioned lackluster CGI in a few limited sequences. This liquid beauty really carry the visual end of this film.

AUDIO QUALITY 🔈 : A

The Dolby Atmos English: Dolby TrueHD 7.1 (48kHz, 24-bit) really is a treat for the listener at home. The dialogue is clear, and the action sequences are bombastic as you are immersed deep into the sea of this film.

Aquaman: Worlds Above and Below (9:39) - A like-minded look at various locales on both sides of the surface that covers special effects, location shoots, and Aquaman lore by way of a few vintage comics.

Atlantean Blood is Thicker than Water (4:17) - A short but sweet look at the history of Arthur and his half-brother Orm, again with some comics history and short interviews with Momoa and Patrick Wilson.

It's a Manta World (10:08) - Another character-focused featurette, this short piece sits down with Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and others to speak about David Kane, Black Manta, the power suit, and more.

Necrus, the Lost Black City (5:51) - James Wan, producer Peter Safran, Bill Brzeski, and others chat briefly about the titular lost kingdom, its visual creation, and its history in the franchise.

Escape from the Deserter World (8:05) - Another like-minded featurette about the location -- or in this case, sequence -- featured in the film, a handful of familiar faces share about its creation and execution while being supported by behind-the-scenes footage, concept art, rehearsals, costume and set design, and more.

Brawling at Kingfish's Lair (4:07) - A quick look at one of the film's many visually overloaded action scenes and some of the goofier details and supporting characters featured in it.

Oh, Topo! (2:12) - And speaking of goofy supporting characters, this short and light-hearted tribute acts as an appreciation and highlight reel for everyone's favorite comedy relief cephalopod.

FINAL GRADE: C-

The only real emotions drawn from this bloated outing are the reconciliation between two brothers and the love for their mother. Aquaman should have submerged deeper into the sea, instead of trying to mimic the tales of old from the land above.

Dolph Lundgren on Amber Heard and Aquaman II cuts.

Looks like Dolph Lundgren isn't following the studio line:

"Action movie icon and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom star Dolph Lundgren has revealed that Jason Momoa "got spooked" with the "Amber Heard situation," and believes that the Aquaman franchise is now over. In an exclusive interview with MovieWeb, Lundgren addressed the future of the Aquaman franchise and says he has heard "through somebody else" that Momoa wants to move on to other things.

"I don't know what's gonna happen with Aquaman. I've heard Jason Momoa thinks it's just his last one, and he wants to do something else. I heard it through somebody else. But it's hard to know what's going to happen in the future, except I just thought they had a great script, and they had a great director and good cast [for the second film]."

After praising the script, director, and cast of the sequel, Lundgren reasoned that Momoa grew concerned about the involvement of Amber Heard, the bad press the actress was getting at the time, and how this would affect the box office and audience response.

"And I guess he got spooked with this Amber Heard situation and the fact that people weren't gonna see the movie because she's in it. I always thought that was overrated. I mean, I think when you make a movie, you've got to stick to your guns a little bit... So, I personally wish they stuck with the original because I thought it was quite good."

Lundgren also referred to "the original," by which he means the first version of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. A version in which both he and Amber Heard reportedly had much bigger roles.

Lundgren is likely right in thinking that the Aquaman franchise in its current form is over, with Momoa rumored to be changing characters and playing Lobo in James Gunn and Peter Safran's rebooted DCU.

The Aquaman sequel was hammered with delays and negative reports from behind the scenes, with documents released as part of the Johnny Depp versus Amber Heard defamation trial even claiming that Momoa had arrived to set drunk and "pushed" to have Heard removed from the project entirely.

While his time underwater may now be done, Dolph Lundgren has plenty in the pipeline. The action star will next lead Wanted Man, a movie that he has also directed, co-wrote, and produced. Starring Christina Villa, Kelsey Grammer, and Michael Paré alongside Lundgren, Wanted Man follows the Rocky IV star as an aging detective who travels to Mexico to extradite a woman who witnessed the murders of two DEA agents. Of course, things are never as simple as that, with Lundgren soon finding himself unable to trust anyone admit flying bullets fired from every side.

Some takeaways here:

Further corroboration that Amber Heard was telling the truth about her role being reduced, that this was done to placate the hate mob.

Jason Momoa is a self-absorbed coward who threw his costar under the bus for the sake of his own career.

There was a prior version of the film (not sure if it was ever all actually shot or just scripted) that would have had expanded roles for Heard and likely also Lundgren, and was probably superior to what was released.

Glad to have supported Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (#OnlyForMera), will not be watching the reboot as things stand. Nor anything by Wan or Momoa.

A “QUICK!” Review of “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (2023)"

What a mess of a movie. The visual effects are atrociously bad, the writing and dialogue are terrible a lot of the time, the comedy feels like the force humour you saw in a lot of Marvel movies, the pacing is slow, plot is disjointed and messy with weak character development from Aquaman himself. The biggest disappointment is the villain, Black Manta. He is Aquaman's most iconic villain but he is so underwhelming in this movie because the plot has some ancient evil king poisoning his mind throughout. He ended up still feeling like a side villain.

There are some cool action set pieces, especially the trident fight at the end which had great choreography. Aquaman and Orm having this buddy copy dynamic was fun to watch.

It is a shame that this is how the DCEU ended.

70+ Best Easter Eggs Found in DCEU Movies

The last few decades have seen an evolution in movie sagas. These sets of connected movies once stood alone as contained stories. Now, they are strung together as super-series, or mega-franchises we now call universes.

Yes, we’re looking at you, DC Comics and Marvel!

This makes for a whole lot of fun for movie fans. One of the best parts of these “universes” is that it opens doors to limitless Easter Egg potential.

When movies, comic books, characters, settings, and storylines become so intertwined, filmmakers like to sprinkle references all over the place, making the experience more enjoyable for fans.

With all this in mind, and having combed through Marvel’s Easter Eggs before, we went back through the DC Extended Universe and uncovered some of the best Easter Eggs across 16 films.

Some Easter Eggs are easy to notice, while others might take a lot of detective (pun fully intended) work to spot. From 2013’s Man of Steel right through 2023’s Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, here are the best DCEU Easter Eggs we’ve cracked open…

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (2023)

‘Castaway’ Reference

Upon seeing Orm’s disheveled appearance in prison, Arthur calls him “Castaway,” a fun reference to the film of the same name. He also tells Orm to pick up “Wilson,” while pointing at a gun – this refers to the iconic volleyball friend in the 2000 movie.

Loki Shout-Out

There have been a lot of obscure Marvel references in DC movies, but there’s no two ways about this one. During an argument between Arthur and Orm, the former calls his half-brother “Loki.” This isn’t just a fleeting shout-out to the popular Marvel character, but it also affirms that most of Aquaman 2 has a lot in common with Thor 2, as well.

Iron Man Reference

Remember when Arthur declares that he is Aquaman during the press conference at the end of the movie? Well, that mirrors a similar moment in Marvel’s Iron Man, where Tony Stark also reveals his superhero identity at a press conference. Tony Stark’s announcement kicked off the MCU timeline, while Arthur Curry’s announcement has officially ended the DCEU. Nicely done…

‘Harry Potter’ Nod

You’ve gotta be a real Harry Potter fan to notice this Easter Egg in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. During Arthur and Orm’s argument, Arthur tells him that he’s going straight back to “Azkaban” after their mission. Azkaban is the infamous prison in the Harry Potter movies, of course.

Hayao Miyazaki’s ‘The Boy and the Heron’ opens to record-breaking $12.8 million

“The Boy and the Heron,” a fantastical coming-of-age story from animation maestro Hayao Miyazaki, earned $12.8 million in its opening weekend, becoming the first original anime production to top the domestic box office. The GKids release is showing in Imax and other premium large format auditoriums, which bolstered its record-breaking revenues and helped secure its first place finish. It also benefitted from a lack of big-screen offerings, with holiday blockbusters such as “Wonka” and “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” still waiting to make their debuts in the coming weeks.

“The Boy and the Heron” marks Miyazaki’s unexpected return to screens after being absent for more than a decade — the filmmaker behind classics like “Spirited Away” and “Princess Mononoke” announced he was retiring in 2013 when his previous film, “The Wind Rises,” was released. “The Boy and the Heron” has slowly been rolling out internationally, earning $84 million, with $56 million of that coming from Miyazaki’s native Japan.

Last weekend’s champ, “Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé,” tumbled in its second weekend, earning $5 million for a fifth place finish. That’s a precipitous 77% drop, signaling that the music icon’s concert film may not have the staying power of “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour,” which has grossed nearly $180 million. “Renaissance” has earned roughly $28 million domestically. Like Swift, Queen Bey has bypassed a traditional studio in order to release her film, enlisting AMC Theatres to oversee its distribution. That allows her to keep a larger share of the ticket sales.

As “Renaissance” faltered, Lionsgate’s “Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” took second place, picking up $9.4 million to push its domestic haul to $135.6 million. That’s a solid number, particularly considering that the “Hunger Games” prequel carries a $100 million production budget, a modest figure for a film of that size and scope.

Toho International’s “Godzilla Minus One” continued its hot streak, stomping to $8.3 million in its second weekend. The monster movie’s domestic haul stands at $25.3 million, making it the highest-grossing live-action Japanese film to be released in North America.

Universal and DreamsWorks Animation’s “Trolls Band Together” will take fourth place, earning $6.2 million. That brings the family film’s total to $83.1 million. One of the weekend’s other new offerings, Bleecker Street’s “Waitress: The Musical,” earned $3.2 million.

In limited release, Searchlight’s “Poor Things” earned a sterling $644,000 from just nine theaters. Its per-theater average of $72,000 is also the best of the fall awards season — it falls slightly behind the per-theater bows of “Beau Is Afraid” ($80,000) and “Asteroid City” ($142,000), which came out in the spring and summer. The off-beat comedy from Yorgos Lanthimos, the director of “The Favourite,” stars Emma Stone and has been generating plenty of Oscar buzz since it debuted at the Venice Film Festival, where it won the prestigious Golden Lion.

“Origin,” another critical favorite, opened in limited release with $117,063 from two theaters. That’s a per-screen average of $58,532. The Neon release is written and directed by Ava DuVernay and adapts Isabel Wilkerson’s “Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents,” a historical examination of hatred and racism.

Next weekend brings the release of “Wonka,” a look at the early days of the candy maker that stars Timothée Chalamet. That should sweeten the box office, but theater owners and analysts believe this holiday season will be more muted than the prior two years, when the mega-grossing “Avatar: The Way of Water” and “Spider-Man: No Way Home” debuted

Just as Khal Drogo made a surprise return to Game of Thrones during Season 2, Jason Momoa is making a somewhat less surprising return to host Saturday Night Live again on November 18th.

“Aquaman,” “Fast X” and “See” star Jason Momoa is set to host “Saturday Night Live” November 18, his second time hosting the show. [ ... ] Momoa first hosted the iconic sketch show in 2018 during Season 44. Mumford and Sons appeared as the musical guest at the time. The episode is best known for the “GE Big Boys” sketch, a commercial about man-friendly household appliances, and the “Elf on the Shelf” sketch, in which Momoa plays an elf who wants to be assigned a new child. This time around, Momoa will be returning to the show ahead of the premiere of “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom,” which premieres on December 22, and “Dune: Part Two,” which is eyeing a March of 2024 release date. Momoa will be one of the bigger names to host Season 49 so far and will be preceded November 11 by Timothée Chalamet with musical guest Boygenius.
