How do people use the internet still. Opening up tumblr or twitter to find deep amounts of misinformation ranging from ignorance about basic geography or economics to the classic “the media hasn’t reported about [x inflammatory issue]” (which I, a Newspaper Reader, know for a fact isn’t true) has made me pretty pessimistic about the future. If, as it looks to me, everyone gets their news from misleading screenshots on Twitter or Tumblr or some snarky TikToks where some rando talks to you from their bedroom, I really don’t see how we’ll ever escape the hyperreal hellscape of Alternative Facts. Facts aren’t a tool for you to debate with or manipulate towards your cause or identity. Truth has to be the starting point for any meaningful discourse, or we will be forever in the dark.
Having seen people fall into the alt right media ecosystem, it’s always disturbing to see people fall into similar patterns of fact denial, selective media consumption, echo chambers, and conspiratorial thinking (which as of late has caused an “unholy alliance” of left/right accusations about evil Globalists controlling the media—I think it would be good for people to read Adorno and Horkheimer’s argument about antisemitism being the “fool’s socialism”, whereby capital gets tokenized into a convenient racialized scapegoat to be banished by The People).
In this case, it’s not about your specific positions about policy or diplomacy. Specific debates about how the consequences of certain policies can magnify or decrease the risk or intensity or suffering are all well and good. But I am worried about a Manicheanism infecting young people who mean well, which could very well convince them that they are Good, but the ones who oppose them: They are Evil, They are Liars, They Hate You, They Control Everything, They Own Everything, They Must be Destroyed, etc. Such a nihilism—there is no hope, they control everything, we cannot trust anyone except for our own kind, we see apocalypse on the horizon, we must set fire to everything impure—is not conducive to being able to articulate reasonable specific courses of action for optimal outcomes. It is instead the basis for seeing the world in terms of angels and demons. The world may never see peace if the fever of forever revolution took hold such that we no longer wished for a better world, only to win and defeat our enemies, over and over until there is nothing and no one else to purge.
Then the world becomes a script for constant hermeneutics of suspicion. Read between the lines, we would say. Who knows what They are up to. They could be anywhere. It is how Naomi Wolf went from a decently known feminist writer into a full blown antivaxxer. Beware. Fake news is everywhere. The desire to subvert reality and bend it towards a narrative of justice that tickles our fancy is universal. We would do well to do what Naomi Klein did (in her book Doppelganger) instead and really consider if our doppelgangers on the “wrong side” are really any different than us, since I think what is ultimately at play is basic psychology and social interactions, and the consequences could be devastating if we don’t interrogate them. It should terrify more people that the basic truth is harder and harder to find in online conversations.

theres only so many times i can go for a high-powered walk to get rid of absolute incandescent anger!!! i’ve only been in this house for two and a half months and it’s just, destroyed me utterly.
my dad is 65, white, british. he is also terminally online.
he spends most of his time looking at memes, hanging out in /b/ offshoots for all his news, and watching opinion piece videos (which, surprise surprise, if he doesn’t agree with the opinion, he’ll mock it or close it before finding something that aligns with his views more).
i dont even know what his views ARE because he’s got so little critical thinking beyond ‘if i don’t agree with it, it’s wrong' and all he spouts are things he read somewhere
and my god he’s repetitive. he says the same jokes and repeats the same memes frequently. spouted the ‘avocado toast millennials’ argument thats YEARS out of date. has such a shallow inane understanding on complex societal Stuff.
today he was saying how the will smith chris rock thing was staged, bc a slap is far too minor, tupac wouldve shot him, smith would never have slapped alec baldwin if he’d said it, rock braced before the impact, etc etc
all this garbage, for every topic. he delights in dark humor memes and anti-government rhetoric.
he’s an antivaxxer. he supported the freedom convoy. he blames biden specifically, for what putin is doing. he hates democrats (we are in new zealand, democrats shouldn’t even be on his radar. this is how i know he spends all his time on /b/ boards which are predominately White Americans).
instead of the covid tracer sign-in he fills out the forms with his name as ‘jacinda hitler’ or ‘adolf ardern’. he thinks everyone should be infected with omicron to give them full covid immunity (conveniently glossing over health risks and long covid. he isn’t vaccinated bc of the .5% chance it might cause issues with his fucked up kidney). he is for some reason pro-police, despite the anti-government stance.
he thinks that jkrowling is entitled to her opinion (conveniently glossing over her financial and cultural icon status granting her a massive platform, and how he refuses to acknowledge different opinions bc theyre Wrong and Stupid). he thinks trans people are wrong unless theyre fully transitioned and surgeried (conveniently ignoring all the things in the way of transitioning. nz’s mastectomy surgeon retired in 2012. our waitlist is 40+ YEARS long), and shouldn’t compete in sports, and how a rapist claimed to be a woman and was put in a women’s prison, and look what happened!! trans people dangerous!!
he likes to watch car crash videos and people trying to pull insurance scams. he loves the concept of the darwin awards.
he believes that capital punishment should be a thing. he likes posts Owning The Mentally Ill Snowflakes On The Internet. his favorite saying is ‘sacred cows make the best hamburgers’ as justification for punching down on minorities, an absolute bastardization of what the phrase was originally meant to be.
i am a mentally ill trans person living in his house. i have a permanent chronic sleep disorder, possible undiagnosed adhd/autism. my brother who lived here before moving out to study, definitely has undiagnosed autism.
DAD HIMSELF had to quit his job. his job he had for almost 30 years, because of chronic anxiety and depression. the meds he has to treat it are not insubstantial - they started him in on the big guns right away. he IS the mentally ill snowflake on the internet.

I still don’t get it.
It’s difficult to really vocalize my feelings on the issue because they’re all kinda crossed. Like, people are touting certain posts of hers like they’re proof that she’s a terrible person or whatever, screenshots and shit of her political takes, but, like...hey. Guys. Have some of y’all ever once interacted with someone who doesn’t agree with you politically?
In the real world. Face-to-face. If you met Squiggly (fuckin’, fine, someone like Squiggly) in the street, would you look them in the face and start ranting about all the shit they’ve done and said to make you feel upset?
I’ve been trying to parse out what the fuck happened there for years, at this point, and it still doesn’t really make sense to me. Like, a lot of the shit she caught (and apparently, is still catching) flak for is just...Republican. You know? Like, conservative beliefs that a lot of Republicans share. I don’t like the party myself, but I know a good number of people who would consider themselves Republicans and I’m starting to think that just, at some point, saying ‘alright, I guess the argument ends here’ never registered for some people.
Part of it is definitely just how Tumblr operates. You essentially curate your own content, and if you don’t like someone’s opinions, you just stop following them - which means that there’s a lot of people who exclusively get info and opinions totally counter to conservative ideologies, and believe that this information is not only right, but it’s also the only right anyone should be allowed to believe in.
Let’s get specific.
I, personally, unfollowed SquigglyDigg because of what seems to be anti-vaccination sentiment that’s showing up on her blog just recently. I believe in the vaccine, I believe it is necessary, and I certainly believe that claiming that it’s harmful in any sense is harmful to society at large.
So there’s something about the vaccine, or how it’s being handled, or something about the vaccination card they give you that just rubs her the wrong way. I have no specifics, don’t presume that she’ll give them to you, either, and for fuck’s sake, don’t harass her about it, because it just occurred to me that some of you spineless fucks actually think that sending death threats to people on the internet is a good way to handle shit.
But, back to the point - she doesn’t like something about the vaccine and the particular post I saw seems to equate the vaccine card to the star that Jewish people were forced to wear during the Holocaust.
The internet allows for accumulate opinion like this. It just happens - but I believe that’s because the internet is predisposed to radicalization. What about someone I meet in the real world?
All of my coworkers are antivaxxers. They refuse to get it for various reasons, none of which I think are good or even valid.
Okay. What now?
Everyone around me is pretty conservative in general. I can’t opt for a more agreeable experience by ‘unfollowing’ anyone, because they’re still going to be there every day I come in for work. Hell, I can’t even get them to agree with me.
I’ve always hated the phrase ‘agree to disagree’ because it leaves a lot of loose ends in terms of the argument it pertains to, but what else can I do? I’m sure as hell not going to go to my boss and go ‘hey x coworker is republican please do something about it’. For one, they can’t do anything about it, and for two, even if they could, I don’t think I could ethically prescribe to whatever method of political pruning they might be employing to ‘solve’ the disagreement.
So that’s the whole ‘But she’s conservative!’ side of it. So what. I know a shitton of conservatives who are actually very nice people and it’s just not a problem.
Then, of course, there’s the other...stuff. Can’t even really dig into all of it, but...I don’t know, man, it just looks like regular fandom drama bullshit to me, and the only reason Squiggly caught so much shit for it was because she was a big target who was only tangentially involved in some of those situations.
And just in case some of you didn’t notice that little bit in the middle - for god’s sake, do not harass her. If you got fucking pilloried for your political beliefs because of an opinion you had on a goddamn kid’s movie, I can guarantee you that you’d dig your heels in through the crust of the Earth and start taking active measures to build up a wall around yourself to get people to quit fucking doing it.
“But I wouldn’t-” You would. You absolutely would, if not from the beginning, then from the moment that people started dragging up everything they could find that would help them feel more comfortable or sure in disliking you, every little mistake or irrational slip of the tongue that they could possibly dig up.
Don’t. Fucking. Do it.
So to summarize:
- I’m pretty sure SquigglyDigg is just conservative, guys
- That’s not a bad thing, just in case I have to reiterate
- Petty fandom RP bullshit? Get in line, it’s literally fucking everywhere
- Why did it take me so long to figure this out? It didn’t because I’m still parsing through it all (because believe it or not I can agree to disagree but I’ll still have reservations about it because it’s fucking politics, people, it’s a goddamn minefield) but what I know for sure is that the shitstorm that erupted around her was not remotely warranted and you people need to fucking cool it

I haven’t read that callout post for me, I scanned thru it and most of it was bullshit like ‘oh shes racist because she tweeted that Micahs tummy looks like a pillow, therefore she is sympathizing with him!!’ and ‘oh she thinks this PoC chatacter is hot therefore she is fetishizing them!!’
But one thing I will comment on is that myself and my mutuals/followers never said a thing to NewAustin.
First thing, I’m an 18+ blog, why the hell would I be on a minors blog in the first place? I’ve had NA blocked since day one. I’m not comfortable interacting with minors. They, however, never blocked me, and they were behind some of the abuse I recieved.
Next thing, NA said that somebody sent the r-slur to them. Well, NA has also never mentioned their race on their profile. How is anybody meant to know what race NA is? only goes to show that they sent that to themselves. Plus, theyre a child, so they don’t quite understand how serious all this stuff is.
Another thing, I’ve told my followers/mutuals from DAY ONE to NEVER interact with any of the abusive people on this site. I’ve made posts telling people to block said group, and not interact with them. Block block block. Ignore ignore ignore. Don’t feed the trolls, and whatknot.
HOWEVER, just a reminder that ethnic-cowboys, antivaxxer, arthur-dirtydick-morgan2, and the rest of the crew did attack a minor repeatidly not too long ago. I won’t tag said minor, but I have reblogged all the posts about this.

I’ve also said before that if you don’t like my/my posts, then just block me and blacklist the tags you disslike. When you enter a fandom, it is YOUR responsibility to filter out the content you disslike. Blocking/blacklisting stuff is there for you to help cater the content to what you want to see.
If you refuse to do this, which is what that lot have done, then it’s your own damn fault. You can’t attack anybody for making content that you disslike - just because the content isn’t for you, doesn’t mean that nobody can enjoy it.
Again, if you disslike my stuff, please block me. Making out of context callout posts for me isn’t going to do anything, apart from getting your blog removed for the third time for targeted harassment.
Why haven’t y’all blacklisted the Micah tag too? there’s a lot of fans out there, and a lot of content floating about. Why not help prevent your future self getting worked up, by taking five minutes out of your day to blacklist and block all the things you disslike?
Again, block myself, blacklist those tags, and go and enjoy your life. Do you really want to waste your time getting worked up over content you disslike? oh no, this stranger on the internet likes a villain, therefore nobody can like them and they must be cancelled. lol, what a toxic mindset to have. C’mon, put your big boy boots on and filter out that content you disslike.
Why don’t you use all that hatred inside of you to fight something that actually matters, such as all the REAL racism out there in the world? a lot’s been going on recently, not just for racism, but sexism too. Or would you prefer to harass a bunch of strangers on the internet because they’re a bit horny for fictional characters?
Like, damn, go and do something useful. Quit sitting behind your computer screens spewing false claims, when you could be a good person who really does make a difference by targeting real life racists!
EDIT: About the slur fic, that happened almost a year ago. I put my hands up and admitted that I made a mistake there: back when I first started writing fanfiction, I had heard that slur in the games, but thought it was just an insult - not specifically a slur. When I was aggressively informed that it is a slur, I edited the fic, added warnings, and made THREE apology posts where I apologized for my mistake, my lack of research, my general ignorance, etc.
The fic is still on AO3 under the name ‘knife play’ with a tonne of warnings. I meant to delete the fic, but I thought ‘abandon’ meant delete (i was new to this stuff,) and now I can no longer edit it in any form. I’ve been talking to AO3′s DMCA takedown team about what I can do to have the fic removed, so we’ll see where that goes.
But yeah, that was genuinely my mistake, and I can see why some people would consider my ignorance as ‘racist,’ but that’s it, that’s the only thing I’ve done that was genuinely wrong. I still apologised for it and corrected it.
