Tw: g slur.
Because gothel being a anti-Romani stereotype is so much better than her being a antisemitic stereotype🤡🤡🤡. I swear to god the fans of this movie deserved to be bullied in school for being this stupid. They’re as stupid as Wendy stans from the mcu.

I'm sorry to say it but I swear sometimes goyim/gadje forget that the reason that Hitler was a bad person is because he committed genocide against Jews and Roma, not because he was some cartoon villain with a twirling mustache

Honestly, the lack of care about antiziganism is mind boggling to me and I'm not even affected by it. People are so fucking casual about it too, like???
The energy is pretty much, "Can't even say [g slur] now. People are so sensitive. 🙄"
And with antisemitism on the rise, I really doubt people are suddenly going to turn around their attitudes about Roma people. It's so gross and I'm really sorry to everyone who has to deal with this shit and not have it taken seriously.

I am 110% on board with this, although some folks have kindly pointed out that it might not be a great idea to try and write a Romani character as a non-Romani author with currently very little knowledge of the diverse communities and history that would be relevant here. Plus writing a Romani protagonist who’s *literally* part animal is a bit…yeah. Not the best optics.
So as much as I’d love to help counter-balance Stoker’s blatant anti-Romanyism, I’m probably not the best person to do that as an outsider. But I’m absolutely here for everything else! And anyone else who wants to take a shot at writing something along these lines is more than welcome to do so. 😁

My sibling is watching Criminal Minds rn, and I decided to sit down and watch an episode.
I've never seen Criminal Minds. I figured it be, like, a bonding opportunity, or something.
And the antiromanyism and liberal use of the g-slur in the show really threw me off.
These characters were literally rolling from town-to-town breaking in to homes, killing people, and abducting children. And not just any children-- little blond haired, blue eyed white girls. They were slitting the parent's throats and stealing the little girls to make them child brides. They did this as part of some sort-of ritual with water and intentionally broken glass-- which they left everywhere because they're "incredibly superstitious."
And all these police and FBI were like: Romani (they used the g-slur) steal and teach their kids to steal, so let's search shopping centers to catch them because they're probably shoplifting and then reselling the clothes to make a living.
And like???
###
For anyone not aware: in Jewish wedding rituals, a glass is broken intentionally to make love eternal and marriage long-lasting, often by stepping on it-- which is exactly what these characters did. They scattered intentionally broken glass and broke glass at the scene of the crime and the "groom" then had to step on it.
So, it also seems like there was also a conflation of Jewish and Romani. Romani people have varying religious backgrounds as "there exist as many customs as there are Romani groups."
The broken glass thing might also be a Romani custom in some groups, but I am not Romani and would thus not have had that knowledge of customs passed down to me, orally, from my family.
But I am sure it's a Jewish custom. So, the fact the show creators wrote an episode where serial killers use a Jewish custom in a ritual where they kidnap blond haired, blue eyed white girls is incredibly suspicious.

Not a huge fan of recent Marvel comics forgetting Magda and her importance in Magneto's life and history in favour of focusing only on Charles.......

Thinking about Bruce, alone, before his Robins, his mother gone too soon to teach him much more than the basics, quietly observing just a few of the Big Traditions...
Having an actual dinner for a change, some apple and honey slipped in. A quiet "shanah tovah" murmured to Alfred before bed. Staying home from his patrol a few certain evenings that next fortnight. Falling asleep in the gazebo on the manor grounds that he knows doesn't really qualify, but to be fair he's not really trying to follow any sort of rules, just... just giving a few little reaching grasps at a sort of something he's never really felt a part of, but still feels a kind of almost remembrance for.
And then Dick comes to stay with him. Loud and colorful at times, withdrawn and somber at others.
When the cool breezes at the end of their first summer start shifting the manors heavy curtains, it looks like the boy is settling into a solidly sorrowful downturn. Something deeper than the familiar ache of missing loved ones that Bruce knows and recognizes. He tries introducing various new entertainments, challenges, hobbies. And Dick gives him a little smile here and there, tries out each new pursuit diligently, but... there's still an empty hole in there somewhere, brought on by the autumn air, and Bruce doesn't know how to patch it up.
Until the night Alfred places the bowls of fruit and honey on the table with the usual quiet refrain, and Dick's jaw drops open and his eyes light up and the words spill right back from his tiny, clumsy lips and suddenly what was once only murmured and whispered between mourning men is tumbling out loud and bright and celebratory and over and over from all three of them, building up slow at first then matching each other's energy until finally their usual in memoriam participation of these high holy days, looking to the past, is replaced at last by looking to the future.
Putting their faith in a good year to come, rather than mourning the good years lost.
And giving a young boy, clinging to the kindness of strangers, the lifeline of a shared connection.
Bruce knows immediately in that moment, his foggy scraps of memory aren't going to be enough. He needs to learn. All he can. To make sure Dick never loses that connection to his mother. His family. His culture. Not like Bruce did. No. He has to learn, so that he can then teach.
And though he starts the journey for his young ward's sake (later, he realizes, his son's sake, though that revelation is a few "Shana Tovah" yet to come), it's not too far into it that he begins recognizing his own path. A link not just to his mother and the past, but to himself and a future. Something he can ground his identity in just a bit more solidly, as he learns (better late than never) who Bruce is, outside of Batman.
As part of a family.
As a father.
As a Jewish man.

note: the below panel has the g slur in it, but it's one of the most personally resonant panels for me as a member of a diaspora and i have to include it in any list of my favorites for that alone.

Elizabeth Olsen stans are so violently racist that I’m genuinely concerned about the state of MCU fandom. General MCU fandom needs to condemn them and Elizabeth more widely. Supporting Elizabeth’s Wanda and denying the antisemitism and racism present in her casting and fandom is allowing behavior like this to fester:

Warning for antiromanyism in today's Dracula Daily.
It includes antiromani slurs (two kinds!) and some pretty typical stereotypes, but they are at least not portrayed as evil.

I don't care how much of an ally you say you are stop putting that Nazi punch gif "reblog for health and prosperity" on my dash especially not without a tw stop making "punching Nazis" a meme stop forcing people whose relatives were killed in the Shoah to think about intense generational trauma because you get the warm fuzzies from saying how much you hate Nazis without thinking about how what you're doing affects others.
standing by Jewish + Romani people will always be more important than punching nazis it's just easier to reblog Punch A Nazi For Health And Prosperity than to do the work of examining & deconstructing your own biases or doing anything that makes a concrete difference

god i hate mcu wanda. i hate what they did to her. she was the first character i saw myself in, and for what? for that to be bastardised into a white thing? a thing that gadje experience? i am writing this curled in bed thinking about how different my life would have been if i wasn’t ripped from my culture—i still grew up in it and get harassed, don’t get me wrong, they can’t take that from me—but i lie here crying while my grandfather is dead and i mourn every fucking day, and i want to cook something but i don’t have the recipes, and i want to connect but i can’t. and the one character that i thought would get that? no, no, she’s a gadje now.

fyi from what i know, Romani people generally dont want to be portrayed in fiction written by non-Romani, even if the portrayal is positive. so perhaps your story idea would need a co-author!
Thanks for telling me! Finding a co-author sounds like it would be a good course of action - in the meantime, maybe I can start researching more about existing works by Romani scholars and writers.
It’s entirely possible that I’m just not the right person to tell that story, given that I *don’t* have the necessary cultural background. That strikes me as very fair, especially given how much bullsh*t the Romani/Roma have endured in outsider-authored media and discourse.
