Y’all do understand that HoX/PoX and Krakoa are not endorsements of Israel right? Because I see one more post saying “Hickman made Magneto a Zionist” I might go insane. He didn’t. I have my qualms about that whole era and how it was handled, but it’s not an endorsement of Israel at all.
Having Magneto explain Krakoa to other world leaders in Haifa and having him explicitly condemn Israel was very pointed and on purpose. They didn’t pick a country out of hat and have their ambassador be there. Having it be an Israeli ambassador was a deliberate writing choice. Even with Krakoa’s flaws it’s not Israel. It never will be.
That being said- Krakoa was formed under some of the best of circumstances and there are still many issues. You’re not supposed to pick up HoX/PoX and go “Wow is is morally and politically perfect and nothing could go wrong. I am so glad this is a model for how we should act in real life”. Krakoa was flawed. It’s leadership especially flawed. You’re supposed to ask questions. You should see what Beast is doing and go “Wait this is definitely wrong”.
Now whether or not Krakoa could have ever truly succeeded is up to reader. It’s a complicated creation. I can’t speak on Hickman’s own beliefs. As far as I’m aware he’s offline and hasn’t spoken on Israel directly. Regardless, the take that Krakoa is supposed to be some shining beacon on why Israel is great is lacking in media literacy and a deliberate misreading of the text.

I reread HoX/PoX to celebrate the end of the Krakoa era and I am remiss that I never posted this conversation between Magneto and an Israeli ambassador that was penned in 2019. Any justification of the occupation is never welcome on my page. Free Palestine.

Magneto is JEWISH. He is a Jewish character. The original version of the story the new X-Men 97 season is trying to tell relied on him being snapped out his plan by a young Jewish girl being hurt (I actually posted about how much I love this story beat last year). A young Jewish girl he later attends a meeting of Holocaust survivors with. Telling this story without using the word “Holocaust” or “Jewish” is so very telling. And it’s not a one off with this show— Roberto is an Afro-Brazilian character who manifested his powers because of a hate crime and they changed his origin completely.
Disney will ALWAYS shy away from these issues. They will ALWAYS want the kudos from having minority characters while sanitizing their stories. Really think about what it means for them to do this to characters like Sunspot and Magneto, but stand their ground when it comes to keeping the Israeli propaganda character in upcoming Cap movie.

I lost the tweet but I saw someone say that Joseph Quinn is “1960s white man handsome” and unfortunately I do believe that’s lore accurate Johnny.
Idk if this is a hot take: but I don’t mind Joseph Quinn’s casting as Johnny Storm. I think people just hate Stranger Things because it’s poorly written and none of the actors in it are at their best. Quinn is a bit of a basic choice for marketing sake, but I’m not aggressively opposed to it.
I mean- he has quite a bit of stage acting experience. I think that will aid him when he has to stare at a tennis ball for CGI or a secret famous person cameo and pretend it’s the most emotional moment of his life. That’s theatre kid shit right there.

MCU fans need to realize that MCU Wanda is knock off Jean. Wanda was never white and never a redhead before they cast Elizabeth Olsen. Put some respect on Jean’s name and get your whitewashed fav out of here

they made Madame Webb - one of the few disabled and blind spider people able bodied in the MCU because we can't have nice things I guess
I'm going to be honest and say that I completely forgot that Sony was doing that movie.
I'm not super knowledgeable on her comic equivalent, but I do know she is disabled. I also recall that her being blind factored in to her origin with her clairvoyance (?). It's so odd that Sony would go out of their way to rewrite her entire origin to make her powers make sense in the film. It is more difficult to write out her disability and replace all those facets of her character.
They probably wanted a female character that was available to them legally so that they could cast a famous actress. I doubt they care at all about the character or her origin. It's just another symptom of the greater disease that is how mega corporations yank the heart and soul out of all these characters in their adaptations.

what is your favourite non-marvel, non-DC comic or graphic novel?
I have a few!!
The Many Deaths of Laila Starr is my most recent read and just so wonderful. The art is beautiful and the story is so engaging. It’s 5 issues and currently in trade. It’s one of those books where you read it all in one sitting but still think about it for days after you’ve finished it.
I feel like Paper Girls is the one everyone talks about haha, but popular things are popular for a reason! The series definitely has similar vibes to some of my favorite X-comics in the sense that I lowkey have no idea what’s going on but I’m enjoying myself immensely.
Sins of the Black Flamingo is a really fun one, but I still need to finish it. I am always a sucker for a good heist. I picked it up in trade recently, but I did read like first half of it when it was still in just single issues. I saw “art by Travis Moore” and it was an instant buy. I fell off because I had stopped buying comics in general for financial reasons. I'm looking forward to read the trade I have of it soon though.
I have also read most of the really well loved series like Sandman, Buffy, Saga, etc. I definitely get the hype with these books and would recommend them.
If I was magically in charge of the entire school system I would make Persepolis required. My history teacher recommended it to me when I was a freshman in high school and I have never been able to forget it. Similarly, Maus is so important to me personally in ways I can’t even begin to describe. Both of those books are greater history lesson than many textbooks I’ve ever been given.
Monstress is my current read and I’m not far enough in it to really decide how I feel about it, but I get the feeling that it will end up being something I will want to recommend once I’m done.

“But what if Sabra is a villain”
So? The MCU fandom has a long history of loving villains. The MCU itself has a long history of always writing sympathetic angles into their villains. Who’s to say Sabra won’t be the next “girl boss you guys just don’t understand”.
This is how propaganda works. You see one IDF soldier in a super suit with some half-assed sob story and think “Well maybe Israel is bad but Palestine is just as wrong for what they do to Israeli people”. That’s not true. That is fabricated. The Israeli government has had opportunities to alleviate suffering and have chosen power every time. Have chosen to continue their genocide every time.
Having the first time a Jewish actor actually gets to play a Jewish character being a raging zionist who will be heard out and sympathized with by a black Captain America in the first movie of his own is vile and so so transparent. Regardless, the general public falls for it every single time.
I’m begging you not to fall for it. The MCU has always been US military propaganda and the US military is invested in garnering support for Israel. Be smarter than that.

Reviving from the proverbial dead to balk at the fact that they cast a non-Jewish zionist to play a Jewish character in The Last of Us season 2… now what fake excuse can she use for supporting a literal genocide if not “fighting antisemitism”

My favorite part about using my side blog the most is that if I can't reblog a post because I'm blocked for talking about antisemitism- I'll just reblog a post about antisemitism on to my main blog. Anyway follow my main @magnetosmutants

I'm not the most devastated about Kamala leading the YA for comic accuracy reasons. I'm just mourning what is sure to be the loss of Iman Vellani getting to play with a Sam/Miles/Kamala dynamic.
