Coming from an objective pov, without considering any foreshadowing/themes/parallels, incest is almost canon for Jon in the books. The three main female characters are all his blood relatives. Do people seriously believe 1) he won't have a romance? 2) the romantic lead would be a minor character? Frankly it is only a matter of what would be the least disgusting and thus more digestible for readers.
Preach it, anon.
Apart from you being absolutely right, I am also particularly thrilled that you a) don't count Ygritte as a romance (100% correct), and b) manage to evaporate any consideration of Val as a serious contender (also 100% correct).
It's the little details that can bring us the most joy.

Sorry, if this causes some drama.
Did Val ask whether Shireen got recently infected, survived the disease, or just idk ask about her situation before/after saying that what she said?
I understand her concern, i just can't ignore the feeling that she jumped to conclusions and that it was kinda insensitive.
Oh, and just to add to the pile did she asked if Shireen infected other people?
To her (very little) credit, Val didn’t dare say any of this directly to Shireen or Selyse, just to Jon after their meeting ended. Nobody informed her that Shireen had greyscale, so she was shocked to see it. She knows nothing about Shireen’s greyscale situation, and seems uninterested in the details to the point of dismissing Jon’s reassurances; just what free folk healers teach beyond the Wall: it’s always fatal, so it’s better to poison/smother the children before they infect others (not actually true). That is jumping to conclusions, and, well, insensitive is one of the nicer things you could say about a person advocating child murder on the basis of dubious science.

You gonna read Hell Breaks Loose? Ain't has no Valcunt Cain in it, might be good, who knows
I am gonna wait and see whether my friends think I would like it or whether it would drive me nuts with rage, bc I have zero faith in Lardo to write something I will enjoy anymore. Val is a huge part of why I quit reading, but she's far from the only issue I had with Phase Two - the writing quality is dogshit, and so is the characterisation, and the whole gods and demigods shit is stupid and poorly handled, and it's all just ugh. I'll need several very positive reviews to even consider picking up another Lardo book.
If they're positive about it, I might download it and tentatively see if it's any good, but I won't be buying it regardless.

still baffled that one popular anti-dany argument pre s8 was that since she was wearing black she leaning toward the Dark Side™...... as if in the same series another unambigously heroic protagonist didn't enlist into the night's guard where everyone must wear black, and the series' author wasn't explicitly against this kind of stereotypical tropes lmao

I don't like Val very much, the only interesting part of the character were her interactions with Jon other than that you could replace with carboard box and it would not make a diffrence
That's the sad part. She should be much more interesting and complex, and she utterly could be! All it would take is a few mentions of personal background or how she actually feels about... anything other than child murder. She's the wildling version of Sansa, in terms of circumstances, and she’s been around since early ASOS, how hard can it be? Grief over Dalla and Jarl? Interactions with anyone outside Jon? Details of her imprisonment life outside a stray stabbing? Details of anything about her life before the great migration, outside of who she was sleeping with? Nothing.
It's sort of as if GRRM only ever gave us Sansa through Tyrion's POV. Jon is a much kinder lens, but it’s still superficial as heck, and he projects onto her and - apparently - doesn't have much interest in contemplating any of the actual particulars.  Jon's POV gives us no depth to Val because GRRM didn't make him care about it. The lack of connection is intentional, the opacity is intentional. It’s not about exploring his relationship with Val, it’s about Jon not seeing Val beyond his own projected ideals and fantasies. And then having that shattered when she contradicts these projections. Just like with Ygritte. That’s her purpose in the text. Everything leads toward this line in their final interaction in the books:
This was a Val that Jon had never seen before. (ADWD, Jon XI)
Beyond that, she remains opaque. We don't even get a different angle on her from Mel's POV. A bit of a waste. It’s clear she has much more potential than what GRRM intended to use her for.
Perhaps he will give us a little more depth in the future, when he no longer has to signal that she’s Not A Serious Love Interest. For now. she remains a plot device. A foreshadowing device.

What do you think about Val as a character in asoiaf?
Tumblr media
I sleep.
I admit I had vague positive thoughts about her (she’s a beautiful warrior woman trapped in a difficult situation! She brings Tormund back to Jon for peace with his forces) until she advocated killing Shireen based on her grayscale, but apart from that I was indifferent. And then I got involved in istumpysk’s reread, which sort of opened my eyes to how bland of a character she is even compared to other characters who don’t get as much screen time (Nimble Dick and Small Paul get like 2 chapters in AFFC/ASOS and she’s in 2 books but we know more of their personalities and backstory). She’s a placeholder only given importance because of her position in the story, and even that is forced; she is Mance’s sister-in-law, which means nothing to the wildlings (and it really should mean little to the Westerosi. Do you see Lysa getting to claim Winterfell because she’s Ned’s good-sister? That’s not how this works), but because Mance doesn’t have any other family except his newborn, the Southerners need to pretend she’s important as a symbolic hold over the wildlings. Then there’s her importance to Jon as his bride were he to accept Winterfell from Stannis, where he disregards her personality and just imagines her as the mother of his children. Because who she is as a person doesn’t matter to his dream, nor to Stannis’. But then we don’t even get much personality from her, like her interests, backstory, opinion on Dalla or the baby swap; we don’t see her in a vulnerable moment of watching her sister die in front of her or pleading not to let Mance die or confronting Jon about sending her last blood relative away; she feels like a beautiful but generic extension of wildling culture in a way Ygritte didn’t (who we do see in vulnerable moments, whether it be singing about the last giant or crying she’s no crow wife), with even her stance on murdering ill children (which at the very least makes her stand out for something other than imagined status) having its origin in her culture rather than personality.

here’s some examples of rules we have set up for our system discord server! we use it for communication, which helps us get past amnesia and contact barriers. we also use it for chatting and fun stuff- personally, it’s really helped to lower some dissociative barriers a bit

I wish phase 2 had been better simply because I would have liked to see the intricate mechanics of Valkyrie's new magic explored. I like complex, nuanced, rigorously consistent magic systems. Sorcerers in fiction developing their abilities and learning how to leverage them for maximum effect in clever exploitative ways tickles my brain. Instead we didn't even get any confirmation on whether that magic came from her being a Faceless One or from losing her True Name. Not a word.
Tbh I do not care about her new magic whatsoever, she's become a cringey 14yos first OC with All The Powers and it's just. Yawn, next
I don't find anything about her appealing or interesting anymore, like either as a person or as a character
So instead have this picture i took of a seal pup having a nap. It's not great because I had to zoom in but he was dreaming and his little snoot was twitching in his sleep

Hey guys today I am writing a better scene than Vivziepop!
This is for a sort of rewrite thing I’m doing so a little bit of context, this is set mid-season after episode 4 (which I have also changed) and for the stuff with Angel’s leg at the start, he sprained it a few weeks ago and is still dealing with that. There was also all this as a bit of a prologue to this writing so read if you’d like. Warning for more threats and verbal abuse
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This writing is a scene that includes abuse from Valentino in a way that doesn’t fetishize his actions with a weird music video or write him off to be funny when he’s off doing something else. I want to write him threatening, manipulative, and aggressive. So again warnings for verbal and physical abuse as well as manipulation and a bit of gore. I also wanted to tackle how Charlie behaves because in the show she is terrible at helping for some reason.
Hopefully this is a not awful read, but I’ve been wanting to get some of my rewrite stuff out really bad. Also I love getting feedback please lmk if you have anything to say about my stuff

"My lady, you do not have to do this. The risk—" "—is mine, Lord Snow. And I am no southron lady but a woman of the free folk. I know the forest better than all your black-cloaked rangers. It holds no ghosts for me." (Jon VIII, ADWD)
Smh, doesn't Val know she's a traditionally feminine southron lady stand-in? 🙄
