Hollywood has a long history of taking popular foreign films and moving them to the States, often oversimplifying and somewhat homogenizing them in the name of “Americanization.”
The main character has a different first name in Tom Hanks’ version of Hannes Holm’s 2015 comedy-drama A Man Called Ove – which itself was based on Fredrik Backman’s 2012 best-selling novel. And while A Man Called Otto is not as good as the earlier film, it’s not all that far behind.
Yes, A Man Called Otto has a huge sentimental streak (so did the original and the novel), and yes, sometimes the plotting is a bit overly convenient. And while sometimes sentimentality is off-putting in a film when it starts to feel manipulative – it often is for me – sometimes it just depends on whether you buy in to the characters and situations.
A Man Called Otto worked for me.
It is an interesting piece of casting, choosing the famously affable Tom Hanks to play an angry curmudgeon, the kind of guy who you would tend to try to avoid – which would suit him just fine. Hanks mostly pulls it off pretty well, although you do sort of tend to see a little playful tinkle in the actor’s eyes when he is saying and doing things that are particularly anti-social. (Rolf Lassgård felt a bit more naturally grounded in the same part for the 2015 film, but that is possibly because he doesn’t carry Hanks’ pop cultural baggage, at least not in the US.)
Despite its tendency towards a bit of sappiness, it does revolve around a very serious, very dark concept. In fact, before seeing Otto, I wondered if they would downplay or erase this thread, and to the filmmakers’ credit, they did not blink on the subject. Otto is an aging widower who has decided to kill himself to reunite in the afterlife with his late beloved wife, the only person in the world that – as the film puts it – brought color to his life.
It's not easy to make a comedy about suicide.
The running gag – if you can really have a running gag about attempting suicide – is that Otto is always interrupted in the middle of the act by the petty realities and annoyances of life.
As the film begins, Otto’s life is nothing but a series of petty realities and annoyances.
Otto is a very basic, rules-following, hard-working and grumpy man. His wife had died six months earlier. He has recently been sort of forced to retire – it’s okay, he never liked the job anyway – but now he has little to occupy his time. He keeps a watch on his little prefab neighborhood, reminding his neighbors of rules and transgressions like cleaning up after their dog, not using the street as a through street, correctly sorting recyclables and parking their bikes in the proper place.
The only thing he has which would be considered a social life is regularly visiting his wife in the cemetery and getting into arguments with retail employees who want to charge him for six feet of rope when he only needs five. (The fact that the difference is only $0.33 doesn’t matter – it’s the principle of the thing.) He also spends much of his time remembering his past – Hanks’ son Truman plays young Otto in these regular flashbacks – with his beloved Sonya (Rachel Keller).
His life changes when a Mexican family moves in across the street, particularly the vivacious and hugely pregnant mother of two named Marisol – played by Mariana Treviño in a star-making performance in which she goes head-to-head with Hanks and always comes out shining. He also feels a grudging liking for her two adorable young daughters. (He thinks the dad is an idiot, though.)
Marisol pulls Otto out of his cocoon and a series of inconveniences – a stray cat, an old friend and rival possibly being forced out of their home, driving lessons, the strained family life of the local paper deliverer (a transgender former student of Sonya’s) all delay his plans for death.
Will Otto actually find a new reason to live?
As I said before, A Man Called Otto is occasionally manipulative and can be a tiny bit sappy. And yet I bought in to it. If you are willing to give yourself in to Otto’s world, then A Man Called Otto has much to offer.

“The Sound of Music” strikes me as an anti-“Cabaret”, and not just because the major love interest, and true love itself, in “Sound” seems destined, and in “Cabaret”, doomed. The specter of Nazism is an important part of both, but is not mentioned in this review in regards to “The Sound of Music”, even though it might even be a bigger plot-driver. The Nazis scare us, as they are supposed to, enough for us to realize that we should do the right thing. 
So, it’s singing off the stage and over the Alps we go…
In both “Sound” and “Cabaret”, there is the strong indication of the coming cataclysm that we will call World War II. But, unlike in “Sound”, there is no indication in “Cabaret” that the coming struggle of “Good” versus “Evil” will be won, or that the “Good” will be vindicated by their actions, never mind that the “Evil” will be judged by theirs.
This is embodied for me in one of the more terrifying moments in cinema when the “Rolfe” of “Cabaret”, the teenage, Hitler Youth-addled, “Aryan”, Nazi freak gets up in the outdoor cafe to sing “Tomorrow Belongs To Me”. 
We see what’s coming, and we know there’s no “Farewell”, “Auf Wiedersehen”, or “Goodnight” ahead…

The court decided lead singer Gary Brooker's input was more substantial and Fisher's claim for back royalties - of up to £1m - was also rejected. For almost 40 years, the song had been credited to lead singer Gary Brooker and lyricist Keith Reid.
1999 - Hank Snow
Canadian Country singer Hank Snow died. 'The Singing Ranger' released over 100 albums and scored more than seventy singles on the Billboard country charts from 1950 until 1980. probably super stupid question, but in pocahontas isn't the fact that the white people call the natives savages historically accurate? Is the problem the fact that the rest of the movie isn't historically accurate so there was no reason to be accurate with the most racist parts? not trying to be rude, I just want to understand.
It’s not a stupid question at all. I’ll answer it as detailed as I can:

Obviously anti-native racism is a thing that happened upon first contact and it’s also something that hasn’t gone away. To pretend that there was NO hostility would be as problematic as saying that the indigenous people and the pilgrims were “good friends” during Thanksgiving. 
The problem is when derogatory language and slurs that specifically demonizes and harms indigenous people is thrown around constantly and frequently. These are terms that are STILL used against us to this day. To describe an existing group of people as “savages,” “heathens,” “dirty,” “devils,” “uncivilized,” “thieves,” in a children’s story is not only teaching non-native children about these words but are also harming the native children watching the film. Words have impact. To hear these insults over and over and over and over again, and then to hear it in a song, causes great damage emotionally to a group that is already surviving with generational trauma and current ongoing racism.
The Prince of Egypt has it’s own issues but for a children’s movie that was also a musical, the handling of the genocide and slavery of the Hebrews was handled significantly better than it was in Pocahontas. The slaves are brutalized, children are killed, there is great sadness and suffering, but antisemitic terminology isn’t really used (correct me if I am wrong, though). Slurs that impact Jewish people to this day aren’t used by the Egyptians for the sake of “historical accuracy.” There isn’t an entire song dedicated to how the Hebrews are vermin who are only good when dead. Instead there are songs about hope, about keeping the faith, about pain, about healing, and most importantly, the narrative of the Prince of Egypt isn’t “Well what the Egyptians did was bad but the Hebrews were jerks too, you guys!” Slavery is wrong. Genocide is wrong. These people deserved to be free even if it’s at the cost of severing ties with your privilege and your family. That is something Pocahontas ABSOLUTELY lacked. 
2.  Is the problem the fact that the rest of the movie isn't historically accurate so there was no reason to be accurate with the most racist parts?
There’s a bunch of problems with the movie that I’ve talked about in detail but for right now, I’ll mention the historical inaccuracy.
Had Disney made this film WITHOUT using the name “Pocahontas,” it still would have been racist and had a lot of the issues I’ve already discussed. It could have been based loosely on the story without attempting to be an adaptation of the actual historical person. 
The fact that it IS based on an actual person, that they use her name and try to tell her story on such a massive global scale, makes things worse. And it’s worse because Disney knows the history.
They knew she was a child when she met John Smith. They aged her up and sexualized her anyways so they could make a love story.
They knew the name of her husband who was murdered when she was kidnapped. They added him as a character who needed to be killed to teach the white guy a lesson.
In the sequel they knew the name of her brother-in-law who was there during her imprisonment and had to deliver the news to her father that she had died. They made him a comic relief character.
They know what the settlers did to the indigenous people and that women and children were not spared or shown any mercy. They still made the natives “just as wrong” for hating the settlers.
Also in the sequel, they knew that Pocahontas was forced to marry John Rolfe, was taken to London against her will and was paraded around as a “noble savage,” stripped of her culture, and had to assimilate in order to be presentable to the monarchy. They made her journey to England VOLUNTARY, they made her assimilation into English clothing a “quirky musical number,” they LIGHTENED HER SKIN WITH POWDER, and she saves the day by marrying her kidnapper and exposing the bad guy to the King, who takes her side.
All of this is so insidious BECAUSE Disney knew better. They did the research. They knew events. They knew names. They spoke with the tribe. And they warped it into something so reprehensible and damaging and continue to make money off of it to this day without so much as an apology or an acknowledgement about the harm they’ve caused.

I’m gonna stick to the feature length animated films, because if we involve cartoons and Kingdom Hearts, this is gonna get way too long and complicated :-D
OTP - Funnily enough, my first ever non-canon ship was Disney, and this was before I even knew what “shipping” really was. It’s Vinny Santorini x Audrey Ramirez from Atlantis: The Lost Empire. And I still ship it to this day. They’re so fun together. It’s not that I support anyone picking on Milo…but they’re so cute when they pick on Milo together! 
I also have a fondness for the canon Captain Amelia x Delbert Doppler from Treasure Planet. They get to me every time. The way they seem like polar opposites and start out hating each other but grow closer. The way she helps him build confidence in himself. 
Hades x Dr. Facilier for the crossover villain win. Talk about your deals with the devil!
NoTPs: Merida with any man. I will dig in my heels on lesbian Merida until the end. I would sooner ship ELSA with a man than Merida (and Elsa is another big one I see as lesbian and a character I actually like better than Merida).
Pocahontas/either of the Johns also grates my nerves thanks to knowing the historical context behind both those relationships. Squick.
I’m not exactly sure what a WHOA-TP is. If it means “So good you go WHOA!”, then all three of the OTPs I listed probably qualify. If it means “Wait, that came from NOWHERE and why do I ship it?”, I’m sure I have a few. Mostly ones I pick up off friends or vidders I follow that seem bizarre at first sight but are actually really genius. Like when AppleKiss (a great editor worth a watch on YouTube) edited an MEP part with Rudy from TENG x Grandmother Fa, and ALL OF A SUDDEN I KNEW IT WAS TRUE LOVE.

By Steven Pifer On May 15, the U.S. Ambassador in Warsaw, Georgette Mosbacher, suggested relocating U.S. nuclear weapons based in Germany to Poland. One hopes this was just a mistake by a political appointee unfamiliar with NATO nuclear weapons issues, not a reflection of official U.S. government thinking. Moving nuclear weapons to Poland would prove very problematic. The U.S. Air Force maintains 20 B61 nuclear gravity bombs at Buchel Air Base in Germany (as well as B61 bombs on the territory of four other NATO members). Kept under U.S. custody, the bombs could, with proper authorization in a conflict, be made available for delivery by German Tornado fighter-bombers. This is part of NATO’s “nuclear sharing” arrangements. The Tornados are aging, and the German Ministry of Defense is considering purchasing F-18 aircraft to continue the German Air Force’s nuclear delivery capability. That has reopened debate within Germany about the presence of U.S. nuclear arms there, with Social Democratic Party (SPD) parliamentary leader Rolf Mützenich calling for their removal. On May 14, U.S. Ambassador to Germany Richard Grenell wrote an op-ed expressing concern about not “eroding the solidarity that undergirds NATO’s nuclear deterrent” and calling for the SPD to affirm Germany’s commitment to nuclear sharing. The next day, Ambassador Mosbacher entered the fray, with a tweet suggesting that U.S. nuclear weapons could be relocated to and housed in Poland.

This is a truly bad idea. First, moving U.S. nuclear weapons to Poland would be expensive. Relocation would require constructing special infrastructure, such as WS3 underground storage vaults, and other equipment to ensure their security. The vaults normally are located within specially hardened aircraft shelters. While not a budget-buster, U.S. and NATO militaries have far more pressing needs to shore up the alliance’s deterrence and defense posture. Second, deploying the B61 bombs in Poland would make them more vulnerable to Russian preemptive attack in a crisis or conflict. Russia has deployed Iskandr-M ballistic missiles in Kaliningrad. With a range of up to 500 kilometers, these missiles could strike targets in almost all of Poland within a matter of minutes and with very little warning. Buchel, by contrast, would have longer warning time of an attack, and aircraft flying from there at least begin their flights out of range of Russian air defenses. The two major Polish air bases — which host Polish F-16s that are not, in any case, nuclear capable — are located within range of Russian S400 anti-aircraft missiles deployed in Kaliningrad and their radars. Third, placing nuclear weapons in Poland would be hugely provocative to Russia. This is not an argument against provoking Russia in general — given its provocative behavior, including a military build-up, bellicose rhetoric, and use of military force against Ukraine. (Indeed, I called in 2014 for Washington to provide lethal military assistance to Ukraine and for U.S. and NATO forces to deploy to the Baltic states, steps that Moscow deemed “provocative.”) But there is provocative and there is provocative. Putting U.S. nuclear arms so close to Russia would be the latter. Recall the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis, when the Soviet Union placed nuclear weapons 90 miles from American shores. President John F. Kennedy imposed a naval blockade, which allowed time to work out a settlement with Moscow. In doing so, however, he set aside the recommendation of many of his advisers for air strikes and a full-scale invasion of Cuba. Fourth, a U.S. proposal to relocate its nuclear weapons to Poland would prove very divisive within NATO. The members of the alliance stated in 1997 that “they have no intention, no plan, and no reason to deploy nuclear weapons on the territory of new [NATO] members.” They incorporated that into the “Founding Act” that established relations between NATO and Russia. The security circumstances in Europe have changed dramatically and, unfortunately, for the worse over the past 23 years. Despite that, many NATO members still support the “three no’s” regarding nuclear weapons that the alliance adopted in 1997. A U.S. proposal to move the bombs to Poland would divide allies, cause some to question U.S. judgment, and prompt a broader nuclear debate within the alliance at a time when NATO should strive to show a firm and united stance toward Russia. Relocating U.S. nuclear weapons to Poland would be expensive, militarily unwise because it would make the weapons more vulnerable to preemptive attack, unduly provocative, and divisive within NATO. This was a tweet best not sent. The one thing it does do, however, is give Mr. Mützenich a new talking point for removing the bombs from Germany; citing Ambassador Mosbacher, he can claim: “We can send them to Poland.”

Who would the Sanders Sides be as the Beatles?
Alright, everyone, this is gonna be a Long Post so buckle up.
I was thinking about which of the Sanders Sides would fit which of The Beatles, and this is what I came up with. Here we go.
Anxiety/Virgil as Ringo Starr:

1. Later addition to the group and lack of initial acceptance.
Ringo was added to the Beatles later than any of the other members, being the replacement for their former drummer, Pete Best. After Ringo was added to the band, many fans were outraged, and they made their voices heard.
After his appearance at the Cavern Club the following day, Best fans, upset by his firing, held vigils outside his house and at the club shouting "Pete forever! Ringo never!"[x] Harrison received a black eye from one of the upset fans, and Epstein, whose car tyres they had flattened in anger, temporarily hired a bodyguard to ensure his safety.[x]
Eventually, Ringo was accepted by fans as a member of the band and began receiving as much fan mail as the other band members, securing his place as a member of The Beatles.
By November 1962 Starr had been accepted by Beatles fans, who were now calling for him to sing songs.[x] Soon afterwards, he began receiving an amount of fan mail equal to that of the others, which helped to secure his position within the band.[x]
He was a source of inspiration for several songs written at the time, including Penny Valentine's "I Want to Kiss Ringo Goodbye" and Rolf Harris's "Ringo for President".[x] In 1964, "I love Ringo" lapel pins outsold all other Beatles merchandising.[x]
During live performances, the Beatles continued the Starr Time routine that had been popular among his fans: Lennon would place a microphone in front of Starr's kit in preparation for his spotlight moment and audiences would erupt in screams.[x]
Both Ringo and Virgil had later additions to their respective groups, a lack of initial acceptance, and eventual very wide acceptance from others.
2. Exclusion from their group.
As the Beatles’ music evolved, Ringo’s drumming wasn’t needed as often for their songs anymore, and he was eventually only getting one track per album, though he was content with that.
He was also feeling increasingly isolated from the musical activities of his bandmates, who were moving past the traditional boundaries of rock music into territory that often did not require his accompaniment; during recording sessions he spent countless hours playing cards with their road manager Neil Aspinall and roadie Mal Evans while the other Beatles perfected tracks without him.[x]
In a letter published in Melody Maker, a fan asked the Beatles to let Starr sing more; he replied: "[I am] quite happy with my one little track on each album".[x]
During the recording of Sgt. Pepper’s, Ringo wasn’t given as much freedom in how he could play his instrument, often being given specific instructions on how and what to play.
Although the Beatles had enjoyed widespread commercial and critical success with Sgt. Pepper, the long hours they spent recording the LP contributed to Starr's increased feeling of alienation within the band.
He commented: "[It] wasn't our best album. That was the peak for everyone else, but for me it was a bit like being a session musician ... They more or less direct me in the style I can play."[x][x]
His inability to compose new material led to his input being minimised during recording sessions; he often found himself relegated to adding minor percussion effects to songs by McCartney, Lennon and Harrison.[x]
The Beatles began to argue with one another as tensions rose between them. Paul criticized Ringo’s drumming, making Ringo leave the band and go on holiday for two weeks to get away from the other members.
During the recording of the White Album, relations within the band became openly divisive.[x] As the sessions progressed, their collective group dynamic began to decay; at times only one or two Beatles were involved in the recording for a track.[x]
Starr had grown weary of McCartney's increasingly overbearing approach and Lennon's passive-aggressive behaviour, which was exacerbated by Starr's resentment of Yoko Ono's near-constant presence.[x]
After one particularly difficult session during which McCartney had harshly criticised his drumming, Starr quit the band for two weeks, taking a holiday with his family in Sardinia on a boat loaned by Peter Sellers.[x]
When Ringo returned from his vacation, he found that George gave him a ‘welcome-back’ gift.
He returned to the studio two weeks later,[x] to find that Harrison had covered his drum kit in flowers as a welcome-back gesture.[x]
Both Ringo and Virgil were excluded by the other members of their groups and were often restricted in what they were allowed to do. They both took some time away from the other members, came back, and received kind gifts from one of the other members of the group. (George giving Ringo flowers and Patton giving Virgil a card.)
3. Other forms of subtle ostracization from peers.
Ringo was often joked about among the Beatles, but if you look at any given Beatles interview, you’ll find them joking about each other a lot, so Ringo was not a specific target of joking for the band, but I still included some of their interview moments from/about Ringo.

-The “forgotten member”
Each one of the Beatles has something memorable about them. For Paul and John, it was their huge roles in the band as the composers and singers on a majority of the Beatles’ songs. For Ringo, it was his large nose and his... difficulty singing. George, however, didn’t have much of a memorable trait about himself (until the later years when he became fascinated with Indian music and their culture.)
Often referred to as "the quiet Beatle",[x][x] Harrison embraced Hinduism and helped broaden the horizons of his fellow Beatles as well as their Western audience by incorporating Indian instrumentation in their music.[x]
The impromptu musical education Harrison received while playing long hours with the Beatles, as well as the guitar lessons he took from Tony Sheridan while they briefly served as his backing group, laid the foundations of his sound and of his quiet, professional role within the group; he was later known as "the quiet Beatle".[x][x]
George Harrison is similar to Logan in being, “the quiet Beatle,” as Logan was called, “the least popular character,” by Virgil.
Though I do hope that we, as fanders, can grow to appreciate logic more, and I can already see that happening with posts like this going around and with it currently being  Logic Appreciation Week.
Morality/Patton as John Lennon:

1. I am the Walrus
I’m sure many of you recall in the My Personality Q&A video, the sides were asked “How are you feeling right now?” and told to answer with only a song title. Patton answered with, “I am the Walrus,” a song by The Beatles, sung by John Lennon.
In a later Beatles song, “Glass Onion,” John Lennon sings, “Well here’s another clue for you all, the Walrus was Paul.”
Many believe this to be hinting to the famous, “Paul is Dead,” theory because Walruses are a symbol of death in some cultures, but it would take hours to cover the basic evidence for that theory so I will spare you from that rant.
This line is most likely referring to the cover of The Beatles Album; “Magical Mystery Tour,” and The Beatles’ movie of the same name, where The Beatles are dressed up in different animal costumes.

I realize the song lyrics said, “the Walrus was Paul,” and not John, but Paul was, in fact, not the true wearer of the Walrus Costume.
The Beatles Bible.com states that while it was claimed Paul wore the Walrus costume, John Lennon was the true wearer on both the cover of the album, “Magical Mystery Tour,” and in the movie of the same name.
It was later claimed that it was, in fact, McCartney in the walrus costume, and that this accounted for Lennon's line that "the walrus was Paul" in Glass Onion. However, the Magical Mystery Tour film clearly shows McCartney playing bass while wearing the hippo costume, and Lennon seated at the piano dressed as a walrus.

2. Peace Activism
John Lennon is known for his work in bringing peace and love to this world. He was very anti-war and pro-peace. Which reminds me of how Patton always sees the good in people and always tries to do the right thing.
Lennon wrote and recorded "Give Peace a Chance". Released as a single, it was quickly taken up as an anti-war anthem and sung by a quarter of a million demonstrators against the Vietnam War in Washington, DC, on 15 November, the second Vietnam Moratorium Day.[x][x] 
In 1973, Lennon contributed a limerick called "Why Make It Sad To Be Gay?" to Len Richmond's The Gay Liberation Book.[x]
3. A Role-Model Status and Quick Wit
Paul stated in an interview that John was the leader, and someone they looked up to. Patton is also the “dad figure” that people look up to.
John was described as having “quick wit,” a trait Patton also possess, in making puns (believe me, your wit has to be quick to make a pun about a situation before it passes, I know.)
In a 1987 interview, McCartney said that the other Beatles idolised John: "He was like our own little Elvis ... We all looked up to John. He was older and he was very much the leader; he was the quickest wit and the smartest."[x]

1. The Cute One
Paul was often referred to as “the cute Beatle” and Roman is the most looks-obsessed Sanders Side.
Their fans' hysteria became known as "Beatlemania", and the press sometimes referred to McCartney as the "cute Beatle".[x][x[x]

2. Creative Motivation
When the Beatles found themselves in times of trouble, Paul McCartney came to them, speaking words of wisdom, “Be Creative!”
That was really cheesy I’m sorry but I had to.
In instances where the Beatles were feeling depressed or down, Paul would always encourage them to keep up their creativity to continue their productivity.
Upon the end of the Beatles' performing career, McCartney sensed unease in the band and wanted them to maintain creative productivity. He pressed them to start a new project, which became Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, widely regarded as rock's first concept album.[x]
Epstein's death in August 1967 created a void, which left the Beatles perplexed and concerned about their future.[x] McCartney, stepping in to fill that void, gradually became the de facto leader and business manager of the group Lennon had once led.[x]
His first creative suggestion after this change of leadership was to propose that the band move forward on their plans to produce a film for television, which was to become Magical Mystery Tour.
3. Being Savage
Some of you may know about John’s second wife, Yoko Ono, and those of you who don’t, I envy you. Yoko was not liked by any of the Beatles, and she is known for being the main factor in the Beatles eventual breakup.
One, very savage thing Paul did during the recording of the Beatles’ song, “Get Back,” reminds me a Lot of something Roman might do.
In 1980, Lennon stated that "there's some underlying thing about Yoko in there", saying that McCartney looked at Yoko Ono in the studio every time he sang "Get back to where you once belonged."[x]

Saint of the Day – 14 August – St Maximillian Kolbe OFM Conv – “MARTYR of Charity” and “Apostle of Consecration to Mary”- Born Maksymilian Maria Kolbe (7 January 1894 at Zdunska Wola, Poland as Raymond Kolbe – 14 August 1941 by lethal carbonic acid injection after three weeks of starvation and dehydration at the Auschwitz, Poland death camp).   His body was burned in the ovens and the ashes scattered.   Some relics have been preserved and distributed by the friars at Niepokalanów, Poland.   He was Beatified on 17 October 1971 by Pope Paul VI – his beatification miracles include the July 1948 cure of intestinal tuberculosis of Angela Testoni and August 1950 cure of calcification of the arteries/sclerosis of Francis Ranier.   He was Canonised on 10 October 1982 by St Pope John Paul II, who declared him a ‘Martyr of Charity.’   Patronages – drug addicts, political prisoners, families, journalists, prisoners, amateur radio, the pro-life movement, Esperanto.  St John Paul II declared him “The Patron Saint of Our Difficult Century”. Due to Kolbe’s efforts to promote consecration and entrustment to Mary, he is known as the “Apostle of Consecration to Mary”.

Childhood Maximilian Kolbe was born on 8 January 1894 in Zduńska Wola, in the Kingdom of Poland, which was a part of the Russian Empire, the second son of weaver Julius Kolbe and midwife Maria Dąbrowska.   His father was an ethnic German and his mother was Polish. He had four brothers.
Kolbe’s life was strongly influenced in 1906 by a childhood vision of the Virgin Mary. He later described this incident:  “That night I asked the Mother of God what was to become of me.   Then she came to me holding two crowns, one white, the other red.   She asked me if I was willing to accept either of these crowns.   The white one meant that I should persevere in purity and the red that I should become a martyr.  I said that I would accept them both.”
Franciscan Friar In 1907, Kolbe and his elder brother Francis joined the Conventual Franciscans.   They enrolled at the Conventual Franciscan minor seminary in Lwow later that year.   In 1910, Kolbe was allowed to enter the novitiate, where he was given the religious name Maximilian.   He professed his first vows in 1911 and final vows in 1914, adopting the additional name of Maria.   He was sent to Rome in 1912, where he attended the Pontifical Gregorian University.   He earned a doctorate in philosophy in 1915 there. From 1915 he continued his studies at the Pontifical University of St Bonaventure where he earned a doctorate in theology in 1919 or 1922 (sources vary).   He was active in the consecration and entrustment to Mary.   During his time as a student, he witnessed vehement demonstrations against Popes St. Pius X and Benedict XV in Rome during an anniversary celebration by the Freemasons.   According to Kolbe:
“They placed the black standard of the “Giordano Brunisti” under the windows of the Vatican.   On this standard the archangel, St Michael, was depicted lying under the feet of the triumphant Lucifer.   At the same time, countless pamphlets were distributed to the people in which the Holy Father was attacked shamefully.”
Soon afterward, Kolbe organised the Militia Immaculatae (Army of the Immaculate One), to work for conversion of sinners and enemies of the Catholic Church, specifically the Freemasons, through the intercession of the Virgin Mary.   So serious was Kolbe about this goal that he added to the Miraculous Medal prayer:
“O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee.   And for all those who do not have recourse to thee;  especially the Masons and all those recommended to thee.”

In 1918, Kolbe was ordained a priest.   In July 1919 he returned to the newly independent Poland, where he was active in promoting the veneration of the Immaculate Virgin Mary. He was strongly opposed to leftist – in particular, communist – movements.   From 1919 to 1922 he taught at the Kraków seminary.   Around that time, as well as earlier in Rome, he suffered from tuberculosis, which forced him to take a lengthy leave of absence from his teaching duties.   In January 1922 he founded the monthly periodical Rycerz Niepokalanej (Knight of the Immaculate), a devotional publication based on French Le Messager du Coeur de Jesus (Messenger of the Heart of Jesus).    From 1922 to 1926 he operated a religious publishing press in Grodno.   As his activities grew in scope, in 1927 he founded a new Conventual Franciscan monastery at Niepokalanów near Warsaw, which became a major religious publishing center.   A junior seminary was opened there two years later.

Between 1930 and 1936, Kolbe undertook a series of missions to East Asia.   At first, he arrived in Shanghai, China but failed to gather a following there.   Next, he moved to Japan, where by 1931 he founded a monastery at the outskirts of Nagasaki (it later gained a novitiate and a seminary) and started publishing a Japanese edition of the Knight of the Immaculate.   The monastery he founded remains prominent in the Roman Catholic Church in Japan.   Kolbe built the monastery on a mountainside that, according to Shinto beliefs, was not the side best suited to be in harmony with nature.   When the atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki, Kolbe’s monastery was saved because the other side of the mountain took the main force of the blast.   In mid-1932 he left Japan for Malabar, India, where he founded another monastery;  this one however closed after a while.   Meanwhile, the monastery at Niepokalanów began in his absence to publish the daily newspaper, Mały Dziennik (The Little Daily), in alliance with the political group, the National Radical Camp (Obóz Narodowo Radykalny).   This publication reached a circulation of 137,000, and nearly double that, 225,000, on weekends.

Death at Auschwitz After the outbreak of World War II, which started with the invasion of Poland by Germany, Kolbe was one of the few brothers who remained in the monastery, where he organised a temporary hospital.   After the town was captured by the Germans, he was briefly arrested by them on 19 September 1939 but released on 8 December.   He refused to sign the Deutsche Volksliste, which would have given him rights similar to those of German citizens in exchange for recognising his German ancestry.   Upon his release he continued work at his monastery, where he and other monks provided shelter to refugees from Greater Poland, including 2,000 Jews whom he hid from German persecution in their friary in Niepokalanów.   Kolbe also received permission to continue publishing religious works, though significantly reduced in scope.   The monastery thus continued to act as a publishing house, issuing a number of anti-Nazi German publications.   On 17 February 1941, the monastery was shut down by the German authorities.   That day Kolbe and four others were arrested by the German Gestapo and imprisoned in the Pawiak prison.   On 28 May, he was transferred to Auschwitz as prisoner #16670.
Continuing to act as a priest, Kolbe was subjected to violent harassment, including beating and lashings and once had to be smuggled to a prison hospital by friendly inmates.   At the end of July 1941, three prisoners disappeared from the camp, prompting SS-Hauptsturmführer Karl Fritzsch, the deputy camp commander, to pick 10 men to be starved to death in an underground bunker to deter further escape attempts.   When one of the selected men, Franciszek Gajowniczek, cried out, “My wife! My children!”, Kolbe volunteered to take his place.  (The last pic below with St John Paul is at the Canonisation of St Maximillian).

According to an eye witness, an assistant janitor at that time, in his prison cell, Kolbe led the prisoners in prayer to Our Lady.   Each time the guards checked on him, he was standing or kneeling in the middle of the cell and looking calmly at those who entered. After two weeks of dehydration and starvation, only Kolbe remained alive.   “The guards wanted the bunker emptied, so they gave Kolbe a lethal injection of carbolic acid.   Kolbe is said to have raised his left arm and calmly waited for the deadly injection.” His remains were cremated on 15 August, the feast day of the Assumption of Mary.

Kolbe’s influence has found fertile ground in his own Order of Conventual Franciscan friars, in the form of continued existence of the Militia Immaculatae movement.   In recent years new religious and secular institutes have been founded, inspired from this spiritual way.   Among these the Missionaries of the Immaculate Mary – Father Kolbe, the Franciscan Friars of Mary Immaculate, and a parallel congregation of Religious Sisters, and others.   The Franciscan Friars of Mary Immaculate are even taught basic Polish so they can sing the traditional hymns sung by Kolbe, in the saint’s native tongue.   According to the friars,
“Our patron, St. Maximilian Kolbe, inspires us with his unique Mariology and apostolic mission, which is to bring all souls to the Sacred Heart of Christ through the Immaculate Heart of Mary, Christ’s most pure, efficient and holy instrument of evangelisation – especially those most estranged from the Church.”
Kolbe’s views into Marian theology echo today through their influence on Vatican II.   His image may be found in churches across Europe.   Several churches in Poland are under his patronage, such as the Sanctuary of Saint Maxymilian in Zduńska Wola or the Church of Saint Maxymilian Kolbe in Szczecin.   A museum, Museum of St. Maximilian Kolbe “There was a Man”, was opened in Niepokalanów in 1998.
In 1963 Rolf Hochhuth published a play significantly influenced by Kolbe’s life and dedicated to him, The Deputy.   In 2000, the National Conference of Catholic Bishops (U.S.) designated Marytown, home to a community of Conventual Franciscan friars, as the National Shrine of St. Maximilian Kolbe.   Marytown is located in Libertyville, Illinois, and also features the Kolbe Holocaust Exhibit.   In 1991, Krzysztof Zanussi released a Polish film about the life of Kolbe.   The Polish Senate declared the year 2011 to be the year of St Maximilian Kolbe.
First-class relics of Kolbe exist, in the form of hairs from his head and beard, preserved without his knowledge by two friars at Niepokalanów who served as barbers in his friary between 1930 and 1941.   Since his beatification in 1971, more than 1,000 such relics have been distributed around the world for public veneration.   Second-class relics such as his personal effects, clothing and liturgical vestments, are preserved in his monastery cell and in a chapel at Niepokalanów and may be viewed by visitors.
