I love your blog, although (please correct me if I’m wrong) there’s one thing that doesn’t get enough coverage as it should (in my opinion at least). And it’s name is Q. When Dazai and Chuuya were getting Q out of that guild shed and Dazai holds a knife to their throat, Chuuya says something about how Q killed a whole bunch of mafiosi (I think it were around hundred? Idk) with their ability. Which is just, so messed up if you think about it. There’s this eight year old child, with an ability that makes people go haywire, but only if those people hurt said child(if I understood it correctly). That not only means those mafiosi were hurting an eight year old, but it also means that both, Chuuya and Dazai blame it on the child. And to top that off, as a punishment, Dazai locks this child up.

Q suffered so much and doesn’t deserve any of it.

The way the BSD universe treats ability users is something I really, really want to analyze and discuss. People are locked into whatever their ability sets out for them—for other characters like Yosano, this means that having a healing ability means you have to be a doctor, regardless of any other passions you have in life. For Q, having a mind control ability locked them into being a danger that needs to be locked away, even prior to displaying any dangerous tendencies.

iirc, in the 15 light novel, Mori says that he took in Q after Q’s ability was activated and it ended up harming another child. If Q was any other child who harmed another child in a different way (for example, a child punches another child too hard on the playground), the child would be lectured or sent to the school guidance counselor to learn a better way to control their anger. However, since Q is an ability user, they’re seen as a permanent threat for the way their ability manifested itself, and will be treated as such for the rest of their life.

The BSD world clearly doesn’t provide any ability training, or have any form of counseling for people who manifest “dangerous” abilities and need a bit of help managing them.

Although it’s horrible that Q was hurt so much and so badly, I don’t particularly fault anyone for hurting him (I guess other than Mori/Dazai for locking them away), since no one had any way of knowing they were doing it. I also can’t really fault Chuuya for being angry that his friends were killed. But regardless— Q suffered so much and deserves so much better.

[One quick point to touch on is that the mafiosi who died didn’t necessarily hurt Q, but rather could have been killed by the people affected by Q’s ability. We don’t see what happened in detail so it’s all left up to speculation, but the mafia would most likely avoid killing their own, even if “their own” is under a mind control ability which makes them violent.

As we see with the agency’s side of things, when Kunikida is under Q’s ability, the agency is able to keep him tied up pretty easily to stop him from hurting anyone. Surely the mafia has ways to detain their own members if they were to be affected as well. So with that in mind, the deaths were more likely caused by other people under Q’s ability attacking the mafiosi, and not mafiosi under Q’s ability getting themselves killed or needing to be put down.]

Either way.

Justice for Q, I want my little guy(gender neutral) to do well in life. Someone should buy them ice cream.

If the PM had somehow been the primary target of all of these plots instead of the ADA I firmly believe half of the situations could have been solved with Kajii. I understand he isn't popular but listen there is a reason he is who they pull out first with a hat trick when shit gets real.

anyways. I ironicallyish hate dazai osamu from popularish manga and anime and light novel and creature bunguo stray dogs. I have many reasons. :] that would be badly articulated if put here. :]

funniest ending the series could do that would cause the fandom anger. :] would be him staring into the camera and informing the audience he is a STRAIGHT man who LIKES WOMEN and has never thought of kissing men. that is what I would say if it were not for the fact that he already did that. :] in like the first chapter of the manga. :]

in summary it'd be kinda funny if people voted hate because I find him. kinda annoying. :]

only mixed feelings I have are that the manga artist draws him really cool sometimes. not in the animes way where I think the animation team just tried to make him pretty at all times. just kinda. shaped. there is a panel where he is in a trash can. then again the manga has a generally shapey artstyle that's always fun to look at so.

with the existence of beast, imagine all of the other universes we aren’t aware of. an idea i’m particularly fond of is if dazai joined the DOA.

imagine this: mori holds dazai back just a minute or so longer, and ranpo doesn’t stick around to make small talk with oda—both leading to dazai arriving as oda is already on the floor, unable to speak. instead of imparting advice on his young friend, oda tears off dazai’s bandages as he exhales his final breath.

there is no moment of realization for dazai. no clarity, no purpose. he feels empty, he feels betrayed, he feels angry. angry enough that, without oda’s guidance, and feeling as though he has no one else he can turn to, he seeks the advice of the only other person to understand him—fyodor.

fyodor, just beginning the initial stages of his plan at this point, is all too pleased to use this opportunity to invite dazai to join him. two demons with a similar goal in mind: to rid the world of abilities.

hear me out. oda was killed because he was a gifted. his ability was the only one to match gide’s, and mori desperately needed the gifted business permit. dazai surely recognized this, and i’m sure he isn’t very fond of special abilities after the fact. especially because his own ability isn’t considered normal among other ability users. he’s been described as “anti-gifted”, and that’s what his ability is—the antithesis to the gifted. the exact power which fyodor seeks.

he could’ve taken advantage of dazai’s vulnerable state. grief-stricken and bitter, dazai very well may have accepted. a new purpose, a way to avenge odasaku. this would the reason to live that he had been searching for. he didn’t care for right and wrong, good and evil; they were both the same in his mind. in his final moments, oda changed this for him. oda and dazai share parallels as well, which is why dazai did exactly as he asked of him—because he trusted oda’s judgement without question.

i think it would be really interesting to see dazai making use of his ability in this way. maybe i’m the only one…idk haha

List of bsd headcanons

Dazai:

Has bpd. A lot of his traits remind me of my friends with it

He some kind of trans. Nonbinary. Transfem. Transmasc. Idk he's megender lmao

He's described as appearing very youthful in the first two light novels. I imagine that once the events of the main timeline start picking up though, with all the time stopping or slowing abilities that *dont affect him*, he actually ages faster than the other characters. I draw current dazai with small wrinkles, which also hints at stress and stuff

Also, I imagine current dazai getting tanner as he works in the light, as well as getting more prominent freckles.

Round/doe eyes because that is part of his appearance in my opinion. Seeming unsuspecting and innocent, especially during his mafia days

Bad eyesight in his right eye from being under the bandages for so long. Saw this headcanon and loved it

Similarly, beastzai has bad vision in general

I always call No Longer Human an anti-ability in my head, fun fact

He loves to touch other people. Not a fan of being touched by others unless asked

A little, not very polished ramble on Fukuchi and political theory, initially meant to be the answer to an ask questioning what I thought of the last chapter but posting separately because it ended up having little to do with the actual chapter.

This arc is good. I mean, the politics dilemmas it tackles are real and relevant (or maybe it's just me and loving politics discussion, that's a real chance too). Themes and interrogatives such as whether the eradication of states is possible; the critic to democracy in favour of a single authoritarian leader as the optimal solution for citizens' wellbeing; the utilitarian reasoning behind the justification of sacrificing a few in order ensure the greatest good to the most; the trolley problem– would you be willing to sacrifice five hundred in order to save two-hundred and ten million; the general interrogatives on why war happens; those are all real questions that political scientists try to give an answer to. I feel like bsd still hasn't cleared up where it stands in relation to these interrogatives– a lot of it is going to be determined on what Fukuzawa is going to do with his role of Army of Mankind's leader, whether he's going to accept it or something else. But I'm EXTREMELY curious to find out how the author will answer them and the worldview bsd is going to propose accordingly.

So far, bsd has seemed to me to propose a nihilistic-political realist-nationalist worldview: good and evil are meaningless binomials (Oda in his last speech to Dazai), every man acts in their own interest and the strongest prevails (Teruko in chapter 76), a strong sentiment of pride for own country that often translates in denigration of foreigners (the way all characters from other countries are villains, a somewhat reverence for military police (though other people have interpreted it being exactly the opposite))¹. Such reading of bsd is reinforced by Fukuchi's speech in chapter 85, with Fukuchi's character being made overall unsympathetic to the reader. At that point, I was like “Ah! Of course! The nationalist-realist manga makes of the anarchist an unsympathetic terrorist!” (and I'm quite confident I'm not misinterpreting by saying he was framed unsympathetically, at least as far as his ideals go. A lot of emphasis is put on his role of torturer, and the story protagonist looks very upset by it, which feels like inducing the reader to be as well).

But perhaps I was mistaken? Maybe I really jumped to the conclusion by believing this arc would have turned in one anti-anarchism morale. And even though it's still too soon to say it won't, in the arc conclusion we saw so far anarchism was at least framed in much more favourable lenses. Episode 5x11 and the last chapters have vastly subverted the lenses the reader is called to see Fukuchi under, and it's been SO interesting to see. Because Fukuchi isn't made unsympathetic, and as consequence his anarchist ideals aren't being framed as the senseless ravings of the villain anymore. Which I didn't see coming, and was pleasantly surprised by!! Fukuchi's desire to stop war by erasing all states, if not feasible, is now at least being framed as sensate and even noble; which is quite silly given that it's the same ideals he was carrying on in chapter 85, just with more details on political theory and positive lenses. Moreover, the world integration and creation of an single-state is framed as being a natural and unavoidable progression of history, which is CRAZY to me. I mean, it's crazy because it wholly contradicts the nationalist worldviews I found previously quite solidly established in this manga (which, again, might be just a big misreading on my side but. Wow.). Double crazy because there's about one million political scientists who would disagree with it… I don't think it's that much of an affirmed theory anywhere? If anything, because it's got some pretty strong historical negations: I'd like to ask Fukuchi how the gradual disgregation of states reconciles with the dissolution of the ussr and the objective difficulty to maintain wide pieces of land unified, the equally objective difficulty to concretize the goal of European integration, the new wave of nationalism in the world and new countries actively seeking independence rather than cohesion. In the end, Fukuchi seems to propose this insane hybrid of anarchism and authoritarianism with the denial of all states and one single leader detaining all the power (aka no separation of powers, the most rudimental basis to democracy), which sounds absolutely insane to any sensate person but I suppose can even make sense in the bsd world where there's no end to craziness.

I'm very very curious to see how the army of mankind's leader thing is going to be solved. Because if Fukuzawa accepts it, that's quite affirming that the best outcome for society is an authoritarian, antidemocratic regime. And although Fukuzawa himself was shown to be critic of that much (“Even if war did cease to exist, what would remain in that world is a single leader– a dictator. History has shown time and time again that dictatorships only rot.”, chapter 112), him being cornered to ultimately accept the role would seem to suggest that THAT is the only possible answer. Which is an odd subtly not-so-subtly authoritarian agenda which would be… Interesting to see affirmed? but at least that one *is* coherent with the previous signs of nationalism. That said, again, Fukuzawa was critical of it, so I'm not sure he will be willing to follow through (and I find it hard to image a new bsd where world order has been changed. And with Fukuzawa on top of the world, for the matter.) But Fukuzawa did not crush One Order… And overall the narrative seems to have trapped him into yielding to take on the role… Aaaahh, I'm just very curious from a political theory standpoint to see how the author is going to untangle the dilemma!!!

¹ In parenthesis I'm only bringing up the most notable indicators, but those doctrines are an underlying pattern of the whole manga and several events can lead back to these beliefs; for example, how Atsushi's abuse by the hand of the orphanage director is not morally condamned and even implied to have made him stronger, the emphasis on the great power of Japan (here emblematically represented by Yokohama) as a small country / city able to stand up against several evil foreign powers that make repeated attempts to destroy it, and more.

𝐃𝐞𝐬𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: Kunikida’s heart stopped when he saw you with his notebook in his hands. Did you see what he had written about you? Why did he have to be so foolish and leave it behind; and how can he find out how you feel about him?

Kunikida’s head went dizzy, fuzzy and light. He was going to pass out. You were in front of his desk, stood with his notebook in your hands.

He opened his mouth to say something, to stop you, but nothing came out. He wasn’t sure if it was because of your overwhelming beauty; the way the sunlight peeked through the uncovered windows of the office or the way that you looked over to him and smiled. But he kept coming up empty handed.

“Kunikida, sorry. I wasn’t trying to snoop or anything. Dazai just told me you could help me out with something.” You had an awkward smile and Kunikida cleared his throat, walking over towards his desk and taking his book from you.

His heart beat pounded when his fingers grazed yours for a short moment; and he stuttered, “Did you read anything interesting?”

“I didn’t read your soulmate list if that is what you are worried about. I have some self control. Even if I was a little curious.” Your confident smile lessened the burden he felt on his back. At least you didn’t find out this way; the most anti-romantic way imaginable. He would have never forgiven himself for being so foolish.

“So, Kunikida..” “Yes, what is it?”

“Is it true that anything you write in your notebook comes to fruition?” Kunikida scratched the side of his head while he adjusted his glasses with one hand; trying to calm himself down. Why were you asking this so suddenly? “Well, in some sort of capacity; yes, but there’s some conditions. For example, the pages only create nonliving objects and it can’t create anything larger than this book here.”

“So, you could make something for me?”

“Of course!” Kunikida cleared his throat when his words came out in too much of a hurry, too eager. What is wrong with him. But that made you laugh with your hand reaching out and touching the back of his hand. “Thank you..”

He once again cleared his throat. Reaching for his pen as an excuse to take a step away from you; opening his book to an empty page. “What is it you would like for me to make?”

“A reservation for two at the really nice restaurant down the street, the one where the moon and the stars are visible so beautifully at night. Booked for Valentine’s Day.”

“I’m not sure I can..” Before he finished his sentence, your finger lowered his book to place a piece of paper atop his page. “Dazai kind of told me what he read earlier..but the joke is on him. I already had plans to ask you anyway.”

Kunikida stood in silence until you started to widen your eyes. “You aren’t rejecting me are you? I mean, was he just messing with me? I swear I’m going to..”

Kunikida silenced you by stepping forward, his arm tucked beneath your torso as his book laid open flat against your back. “Kunikida..?”

Your breath and heart sped up against his chest; and with the small space your face turned a shade of pink. “I’m not rejecting you.” He said. His arm pushing you further into his personal space. “I’m going to spoil you my entire life.”

Issues I have with ikevamp

That I’m venting here because they won’t leave my skull

*Content warning, we’re talking about men in the past, they did some bad stuff*

Part 1, historical inaccuracies

I’m I history nut so this really gets to me, since I know the deep details of these peoples lives.

The timeline, ok so the game takes place in 18th France, correct me if I’m wrong but I think it is in the second empire (1852-1870) considered there is a noble class, yet you can clearly see the Eiffel Tower which was completed in 1889, there is no mention of the 1889 exposition, so it must be after the tower had become permanent, by then the 3rd republic was around, if we are in the republic the Count wouldn’t be called that by the npcs at all the parties he goes to, no matter which we’re in, NOBODY mentions Napoleon III at, NOT EVAN HIS UNCLE (WHOSE SOMEHOW BECAME CASS CONSCIOUS!)

How does the time travel work, example, Dazai died in 1948, his plan was seemingly to wait until he’s born in 1909 then kill himself as a baby, but then he decides to use the magic door, what are the consequences of 2 Dazais existing at once or him erasing himself from history, he’s a pretty important literary figure, does someone else replace him or does the space time continuum collapse?? Is the future Vlad sees set in stone or can it be changed, just copy someone else’s time travel bit!!!

So straight up these guys aren’t who they say they are, we’ll go through 1 by 1

Napoleon- doesn’t mention he left the love of his life to marry a girl 20 years his junior (like think how interesting it would be if he’s conflicted about love cuz he had to give it up for political reasons) -that scene where MC talks about all the ‘good’ that he did in Europe, like committing war crimes against the Spanish and Portuguese and Eastern Europeans, being a coloniser, killing the slaves he freed when they asked for more rights, killing thousands of men in a meaningless war (ligit H*tler vibes)

Arthur- goofy irl, literally believed in fairies, had 5 children and married twice but he never mentions any of this, he cheated on his first wife while she was dying of TB, he was a liberal unionist (tldr didn’t like Irish people) he was anti-immigration, might have committed fraud. We’ll get to the other issues I have with him.

Leonardo- fruity as hell, vegetarian

Mozart- they got his character completely wrong, the guy was a complete man child, vain, broke, by the end of his life his career fell off (Beethoven better composer), in love with his cousin 🤢, had a s*at fetish 🤢🤢🤢. The hole Salieri thing didn’t happen.

Vincent- they made him too mentally stable, I’m all for him being meek, but the guy had serious issues that they ignore, he ate paint thinner, was rejected by his both crushes, WHY DOES HE HAVE BOTH EARS, DID IT GROW BACK, THEY SHOULD HAVE LEFT HIM WITH ONLY ONE, also he should be ginger smh. Oh yeah and they never mentioned the s*ecide attempt.

Theo- doesn’t mention his wife, or son, WHO HE NAMED AFTER VINCENT, his wife is the person responsible for Vincent’s work not being completely forgotten, was way nicer irl.

Issac- tbh hotter irl, low key ace, maybe a fruit, kinda mean, the only thing they got right was the major virgin vibes.

Jean- WHY MAN!??!! Even if the didn’t want a lesbian route, they could have gone with any other guy from the 100 years war, Edward black prince, idk WHY GENDER BEND ONE OF THE MOST PROMINENT WOMEN IN HISTORY, I’m fine with the delusional trans dude lie, but they say that he was a guy all along, THEN WHAT WAS THE POINT OF HIM BEING BURNT AT THE STAKE IF HE WASN’T CROSS DRESSING???!!! was he double cross dressing??? This is the worst of them all, give me the girl boss we deserve (revers fate)

Dazai- not depressed enough imo, he was a leftist, again missing wife, their were two su*ecide attempts, guy lived through fire bombing, had a few children that he is fine to erase from existence.

Shakespeare- probably a fruit, again never mentioned his wife and kids, btw the way he talks is annoying, some people don’t think he’s real.

Faust- NOT A REAL PERSON.

Sanson- too young, this guys is 67, really liked the guillotine, just saw execution as his job didn’t really care, had a wife and kids.

Vlad- Ok is he supposed to be Vlad THE impaler? Cuz he’s not evil enough, or is he a Dracula reference, cuz he can’t dance that dance either, why did they call him Vlad if he isn’t a blood thirsty war criminal.

Count- not enough history to work with.

Part 2, problematic moments

So I ha have seen some posts on the low key misogynistic way the MC is written and treated and there are a lot of issues wit white washing history so another trigger warning ⚠️

Misogyny- the MC of this game is not the best, I know she’s a self insert but she has no backbone at all. She lacks agency I’m most of the routes, like the MC getting kidnapped is a troupe in all these games, but Emma can escape on her own, Kate has ⚽️, even Alice had more depth to her, seems the only thing MC can do is cry and wait to be saved, I swear she gets kidnapped once in every route, I think they could have given her more character to work with. Another thing, but Jean being a man is bad, really bad, she’s a feminist icon but they made her a man, it’s sought of saying that women aren’t capable of this so she had to have actually been a man.

Handling of SA, important one here, I’m ok with the flirty guy, but I really hate Arthur, he doesn’t just flirt with her in chapter 1 he assaults her and acts like he did her a service, and she just forgives him!?! I’m fine with a guy that sleeps around, I like Jin and Nokto fine, but the way Arthur talks about women, always calling them Birds (if they were going for English slang it doesn’t work cuz he doesn’t have a cockney accent) or worse Skirts, it’s dehumanising, and shows that to him women are vehicles for sexual pleasure and aren’t on an equal level of understanding. There are smaller parts to, Leo kisses her without consent, the Count hides the truth from her, idk but Theo calling her a ‘hound’ sounds like he’s calling her something else…

Minor points on classism, I’m not expecting the communist manifesto, but all these games aren’t very good at dealing with class deviation. In Vlad’s route, the orphan boy thinks he can impress the rich girl, this is the 19th century, capitalism is on the rise, but there’s no comment about how it’s impossible. The little school Napoleons runs is strange, considering he was in a position where benefited from poor people existing and staying poor, ( side note, he’s teaching them swordsmanship when ww1 is right around the corner, just saying they won’t need it in the military) called MC out as a social climber, these games sought of depict the past through rosé tinted glasses, there’s only passing reference to how fucked people were in the past, Also all the historical inaccuracies above tie to this.

Anyway love to hear some other opinions, (I started playing this game before my transition and have always thought it it was wired, it’s my personal least favourite just cuz I couldn’t really get into any of the guys, my OC ended up as a Carmilla reference so….)

I have seen a post talking about some of the issues before so that’s what got me to write this out, if you disagree or want to add anything I’m all ears 👂

y'know, it's kinda ridiculous that dazai eventually won without much difficulty. in recent chapters of the manga, we witnessed for the first time that dazai was struggling so hard, which showed him less omnipotent than he was, and more human at the same time. but it turns out that he was making a fool out of fyodor all along!!!! he lost to the power of alliance!!!! ...excuse me? then what was meursault arc all for?

i love bsd, but there are too many things that annoy me, and the flaws of the series are rarely talked about. so im reaaally happy to see you criticizing the series. i love your blog sm, please never stop posting!! 💕

YES EXACTLY!!

Dazai’s omniscience does NOT help humanize him. All that it does is give him more accountability in everything that happens. He doesn’t get the luxury of pleading ignorance because at this point, the story has made that no longer believable.

No matter what, Dazai knows everything all the time, doesn’t make mistakes in his plans and strategies, and is capable of anything. If this is the case, which I said it was semi-jokingly in the early days of this blog, he really can be held accountable for pretty much anything and everything happening. Which I’d really rather wasn’t the case.

One of the main themes of bsd is humanity. No one’s special or perfect, everyone’s a human being trying their best to get by. The Meursault arc did a pretty decent job of humanizing both Dazai and Fyodor, two characters who were previously shown as (intellectually) flawless, by having them struggle in their battle of wits against each other. Having both of them mess up or miscalculate in some way made them seem like real people and not just two algorithms playing chess.

Having Dazai reveal in this final episode that he knew everything all along, everything went according to his plan, and there was never any challenge to begin with entirely defeats the purpose of the arc. What are we supposed to take away from this? That Dazai automatically wins any fight because he’s Dazai? That removes all stakes.

Why continue watching a show if you’ve already been told that one specific character will always win—and not only that, but it won’t even be a struggle for him to get there, because he knows everything about everything all the time.

I really, really hope that this was an anime-only ending. Asagiri can still fix this. Admittedly, bungo stray dogs has always been character-focused rather than plot-focused, so while I trust Asagiri to handle the characters better than this, I’m not really sure what to expect plot-wise. But I’m gonna hope for the best.

After the battle with the decay of angel, chuuya burn out.

In order to help the mafia recuperate from the heavy loss that they suffered he had to take too many mission and work even harder than before, he end up so tired that his ability go out of control to the point that Mori have to order him to take a sick leave.

He remind him than he did an excellent acting job back at meursault that could even fool fyodor moreover it was a while that he though to put Mori corp in the entertainment industry ( with their first project being an odasaku man TV serie, chuuya-kun would be the perfect choice to voice him , he could already see the profit).

Chuuya still love fighting and still see the mafia as his family but he agree ( After being convinced by mori and all the others executive + hirotsu) that it's for best for him to take a break.

He agree for two reason : like that he could still be usefull to the port mafia even if he would be officially temporary retired but would still help if needed and it would honor Lippmann.

And it work well too well if you ask Mori in a rare what have i done moment when elise became a big fan , he quickly became really popular his merchandise sell like hot cakes .

The port mafia is really supportive of their favorite executive new carrer choice, but curiously the special merch commissioned by his fandom keep on mysteriously getting stolen.

The government decide to not do anything against it , after all it's better than him doing criminal activity ( and they all willfully ignore when they spot his merch ( tsujimura and ango being amongst those who possess his merch).

As for the agency, it drive dazai crazy but his secretly the president of the fan club ( and have stolen many merch) , Kenji and Naomi are fan ( even if he don't hold a candle to her dear brother to naomi) and Atsushi have a collection of his photos who feature akutagawa ryuunosuke in civilian clothes ( dazai reaction when he see them was : " Et tu , atsushi-kun ?").

Paparazzi and regular peoples keep taking photos of him with chuuya it got to the points when the akutagawa siblings and chuuya had to do a photo shoot and when pointed out that he look like the guy in the wanted poster, Yokohama citizen just shrug.

As for his collection in atsushi humble opinion , it's worth it to show it to akutagawa if he make this flustered face even if he had to lost a limb for that ( he's competiting with higuchi on who buy his photos and merchandise but sometimes gin beat them both, both siblings have acquired a fan club ( katai, tachihara, Verlaine and hirotsu being among the one who buy gin merch ( with all of them except katai also being part of chuuya fan club).

Dazai is both chuuya number one anti fan and his most ardent fanboy he's also on the opinions that no one should insult chuuya but him and the terror of all of chuuya's fan club, he's also a big fan of odasaku man ( like in wan) but pranked mori big time for what he see of profitting of odasaku even in death .

As for his fan club a bored fyodor who faked his death is amongst them , him and Nikolaï make watch party when they watch his movie together.

ahhh not the other anon but i think i saw a rb of the post you’re talking abt. im fairly new to the fandom and am rlly like. beyond sick of this sort of discourse in other fandoms. like just block and move on if you find it icky. was just wondering if it was super common in bsd’s fandom? no pressure to answer at all <333

I prefer to stick to my curated fandom corner and only really browse the "bsd art" and "bsd fanart" tags these days for multiple reasons.

So in my experience, on tumblr, it's very rare. I block freely the occasional blog that makes a comment about "how gross" X or Y is in the tags, and people who try to start ship wars and other such incidents. Those tend to be isolated little haters with no etiquette, so it's pretty smooth sailing otherwise.

I have witnessed a few incidents though, here and outside, so unpleasantness under the cut:

On tumblr, I've seen some anonymous asks sent to shame people for reblogging art of a ship they thought was problematic (whether the reblogger liked the actual ship or not), and I've seen someone ask an artist if they "were pro or anti", also on anonymous (how brave). I can't even remember which was supposed to be bad in that case, just that it looked like an attempted public execution. But those were very few and far between.

I too often see "proshippers dni" when visiting a blog, but I try to give some leeway by assuming they simply don't want to see such content. When they add a "you're disgusting/kys" or something, I block and never worry about it again.

I know from participating in a few fandom events organized by twitter dwellers that they are way more likely to start fandom drama over "problematic" ships. I've been in an event where a mod shamed someone for mentioning a ship they deemed "problematic" (in the 18+ chat even), which the other mods dealt with when notified, but the harm had been done. I've stayed away from some fanzines/fan events because the rules included terms that were clearly aimed at shaming some ships in particular, by forbidding age gaps of more than 3 years in ships for example. I've been in an event that forbade any talk of any other ships that were not the main pair of the event to prevent drama of the sort.

But, I've also seen zines that proudly said they were not judging any ship or content whether for the zine or outside of it (tagged appropriately), and I know there's a zine being made right now that was set up only for "dead dove" type of content.

Any other incidents were weird little bubbles that went ignored and disappeared after a while (calling Sigma a minor), so those are the most notable things I've seen in the 3+ years I've been in this fandom as someone on tumblr. The fandom is much smaller here, it's calmer.

The most notable ship that gets bad treatment despite how vanilla it is is OdaxDazai, because they have a 4 year age gap and Dazai was 16 when they first met. That's it. Other ships deemed "problematic" are usually self-explanatory, with history of abuse, incestuous-ish, large age gaps, etc.

Since you got some asks about Dazai earlier, anon just had a realization about why fandom's approach to bullying is so bizarre: it's because somehow, fandoms became convinced that "child abuse victims" and "bullies" belong to the "same category", and therefore should be "treated exactly the same." THAT'S why whenever we criticize bullies, fans react just as defensively as if we were criticizing child abuse victims instead (even though in reality, most child abuse victims are not bullies).

I know that certain folks within the BSD fandom would get mad at me but I’ll have to say this:

Just because Dazai was abused by Mori (or possibly by his own family if we ever get to see them in the near possible future) doesn’t mean that he’s free to treat people like pawns or objects for his amusement. Especially if it’s his colleagues.

Nor does it excuse the fact that he made Akutagawa's life a living hell then it is back when the sickly brunette was living in the slums and set up an unhealthy rivalry between the former and Atsushi.
