wow i love twitter sm.
on a serious note - i think it's funny to portray women not wearing make-up as silly and childish when you're the one apparently caring so much about what other people are doing to their faces.
ask yourself: why do you find bare faces not appropriate for formal events? why does it bother you to see a woman without makeup? how does it effect you? why do you think it effects you?
you're so insistent that there are no societal pressures at play, that women are doing this exclusively for themselves and for the joy of it - then where does this urge to force it on women who don't find joy in it come from? why does it annoy you to see women in their natural way of being? it's a choice, but also there's a right choice, apparently, and anyone stepping out of line shoud be promptly shamed into submission. right?
"a little (whatever) never hurt anybody" okay and neither does a bare face. grow up.

Andrea Dworkin's classic Beauty Hurts diagram from Woman Hating (1974), updated for modern procedures, fifty years later.
A first step in the process of liberation (women from their oppression, men from the unfreedom of their fetishism) is the radical redefining of the relationship between women and their bodies. The body must be freed, liberated, quite literally: from paint and girdles and all varieties of crap. Women must stop mutilating their bodies and start living in them. Perhaps the notion of beauty which will then organically emerge will be truly democratic and demonstrate a respect for human life in its infinite, and most honorable, variety. —Andrea Dworkin, Woman Hating (1974)

this makes me so saaaaad. if women collectively would realise nothing about our natural appearances needs to be altered we would shatter multi billion companies in the blink of an eye AND everyone would be happier. stop being your own biggest bullies! there is nothing wrong with your natural face and hair!

i remember being 17 and having an older woman ask me "what about your husband" when i said i don't shave. i didn't have one, how could i, but still he was being forced upon me as though i should live in his shadow and slave away cutting the hair off of me until one day he finds me.
even slaughtered chickens get the respect of only being plucked once for consumption.

wow almost seems like this whole romanticization of "girlhood" thing kind of revolves entirely around consumerisim. "little treats". 10 step skincare regimens. "girl math" as an excuse to be financially illiterate. be a good girl, don't think, just spend inordinate amts of money to conform to the latest tiktok microtrend bc that's all it means to be a girl <3

Cosmetic surgery is NOT the same as reconstructive surgery ffs. Someone getting a nose job so they look "better" is not the same as someone trying to restore their nose after an accident and you all know it.
"Oooh you can't criticise plastic surgery, some people NEED it" ok well I can and I will, just like I'll criticise the diet industry even tho sure there are people who might need to lose weight out there.
Let's be real here, it's very telling that feminists will be like "hey so X exploits women" and suddenly a bunch of you will be like "whoa there, have you considered not talking about that?"
It's worse when those of you claiming to be all anti capitalist do this tho. Oh you think capitalism is bad, but also we shouldn't critique the rise of dangerous and unnecessary cosmetic surgeries? Go fuck yourself

if hearing a girl criticize consumerism and beauty/makeup/anti-body hair culture or even just saying they don't like wearing makeup or shaving or performing femininity immediately makes you label them a pick-me maybe that's your own conscience or internalised guilt projecting just sayin'. maybe she isn't the one who thinks you're anti-feminist for wearing makeup (let's face it she most probably doesn't because most people fucking wear makeup) but your visceral defensiveness at someone just existing outside conventional beauty standards says more about you than it probably does about them

I find it really gross how men have perpetuated the myths of historical women being SO beautiful the most attractive blah blah blah and then tack on their intelligence and leadership as secondary. Hypatia for example was a very intelligent philosopher and astronomer but men always want to bring up her beauty first and foremost when discussing her. And in actuality no one knows what she looked like. There is no proof that she was this incredibly attractive woman they make her out to be. I genuinely think it’s because they are incapable of showing respect to women they don’t find attractive. They make a mockery of women such as Taj al-Saltaneh just because she is not attractive enough for them, despite the fact that she was a pioneer for women’s rights and a critic of the monarchal system she was born into. There’s a reason men get so angry at us if we choose not to make ourselves attractive to them. How dare a woman not to be pleasing to their eyes. She might as well not exist.

My take is that radfems should shift the conversation from “women wear makeup for men, so we should stop wearing it.” This reminds women of how men victim blame them for assault and harassment. It’s also not true on an individual level- most women don’t want male attention at all. It’s for multiple reasons- out of habit, for other women, to look impressionable, etc. If you want to get across to a specific women, and she says something like “I wear it for myself!” Or “I always wear it” or “I feel unfinished without it” ask “why?” Why can’t you stop? And shift the conversation from them to the fact wearing it is pushed us on from childhood, how men don’t wear it despite the fact they also have facial flaws, how it takes up time that adds up, etc.

It’s really sad seeing women make videos making fun of how their former selves did their makeup (example: “how I looked doing my makeup in 2016”, “we all thought we did something with the 90’s blue eyeshadow”, etc.). Because they act like the problem was them not knowing how to do makeup…instead of recognising that the problem is that trends change constantly, and women are expected to relearn how to paint their faces to keep up.
They don’t seem to realise that the makeup they’re wearing in these videos that they deem to be “better” and “right”, will be subjected to the same mockery the looks they laugh at today are. One day, they’ll all be laughing at “soap brows” and “e-girl blush” while wearing the current trend. And then they’ll mock that trend in a few years.
It’s a never-ending cycle of makeup looks going out of style, and being deemed Bad for it. In the 90’s and 2010’s you thought your makeup looked great, so did everyone else. You laugh at it today, thinking your 2020’s makeup looks good. Do you think you won’t be laughing at it in 2030? Do you not see where this is going?
Women’s faces are a trend. Men look back at pictures of their younger selves and may cringe at their hair or their clothes, but their face is the same and never the subject of mockery. But women? Women’s faces change because makeup changes. Women don’t just cringe at the clothes and hair of their younger selves—they cringe at their faces. It’s sad.
The only way to stop this is to stop wearing makeup. That tik-tok trend makeup you think looks good? I promise you, it will be a joke in ten years. Maybe even five. And the reason this keeps happening isn’t because you were bad at makeup back then. It’s because all the looks you worked so hard to get good at looked ridiculous all along—you were just blinded by trends. Today they’re “soap brows”. Tomorrow when the novelty wears off, they’ll be what everyone else sees—ridiculously brushed up eyebrows. Today it’s “e-girl blush. Tomorrow when the trend dies away, it’ll be what everyone else sees—sickly looking.
What I want to get at here, is that it breaks my heart to see women fall into the never-ending cycle of learning to paint their face a certain way because it’s the trend, then having to learn a new thing in a couple years when that trend becomes a laughingstock. And saying “wow I was so stupid back then, but I know better now” every five years.
Faces are supposed to be timeless. Let’s keep it that way.

I hate that I've never been able to casually connect with most women I meet because I really don't relate to all the rituals of femininity, which have become one of the main things women bond over. I'm in no way masculine, but I've always felt so out of place and unwelcome when I find myself with a group of women that start talking about makeup or fashion or anything like that. I'm not trying to belittle these women at all but the fact that beauty rituals have become a casual thing for women to bond over makes it really isolating to be a woman who doesn't do any of that. And it gets worse when people describe "girlhood" and womanhood to be about these rituals. If I believed in gender this isolating feeling would definitely make me question if I was even a woman at all, and that is kinda tragic. I feel like the fight against gender roles is moving backwards.

A list of (realistic) things you can do to be more environmentally friendly
(from an earth-loving horticulture student.)
— COSMETICS
Use bar soap instead of soap bottles
Use old toothbrushes for cleaning surfaces
Try exploring and researching some homemade face/body/lip products
Use ice sleeves, sunglasses, and caps instead of sunscreen (Edit: I’ve seen people say that it is safer and even necessary to wear sunscreen at all times so try to use eco friendly sunscreen instead! In my country it’s pretty uncommon to wear sunscreen often as we usually wear ice sleeves which is why I did not know this oof)
Use coffee grinds or homemade tumeric masks instead of cosmetic products with exfoliator beads
Invest in a metal ear cleanser instead of cotton buds
Try placing more importance on skincare instead of contributing to exploitative beauty companies by buying makeup
Use cosmetic products that do not contain palm oil
— CLOTHING
Try as much as possible to rewear your outfits at least twice before washing them
Actually WEAR your clothes! I know some of y’all just wear them once for your Instagram post and let it rot in your closet forever. Stop doing that!
Thrift, stitch up holes in your clothes, and use second hand clothing instead of supporting fast fashion companies like SHEIN, H&M, Zara, etc.
Cut up your old clothing into yarn and do macramè with it
Cut patches of old clothing to turn into reusable cotton pads
Learn how to knit, crochet or stitch your clothes!
If you use tampons, try menstrual cups or discs instead. If you use pads, try reusable pads or period underwear. (Trust me, it works). Also, use reusable panty liners instead of disposable ones. They may seem expensive but you will end up saving a lot more in the long run
— GARDENING
Plant seeds/cuttings in your old bottles, jars, and containers
Propagate your plants and exchange cuttings with your friends instead of buying new plants
Make your own soil mixes instead of buying soil mixes
Better yet, don’t use soil for your indoor plants and try getting into hydroponics or semihydroponics instead. This saves so much water and doesn’t contribute to mining of soil
Fertilise plants with fruit peels, coffee grinds, and tea leaves. (DO NOT use chemical fertiliser on soil)
Plant more legume plants in your garden instead of using nitrogen fertilisers. (Look up the nitrogen cycle if you need an explanation on this)
Avoid pesticides unless really needed. Try sprinkling cinnamon powder on soil or spraying neem oil on plants and soil to keep away pests.
If you have a lawn, try looking into rain gardens and consider making one
Let the (non invasive) weeds in your lawn/garden grow! They are there for a reason!
Stop killing earthworms and millipedes in your garden. This also applies to snails native to your region. They are there for a reason.
Water used to wash fruits and rice can be used to water plants
— REDUCE, REUSE
Use the caps of jars as soap holders
Use recycled paper/notebooks
Wash and dry your glass/plastic items before throwing them in the recycling bin
Keep any plastic bags for future use
Use eco friendly or reusable dish sponges
Use reusable straws and cups
Invest in a fabric cup holder
Bring a water bottle with you wherever you go
Drink more water and less sugary drinks
Bring reusable bags for buying groceries instead of using plastic ones
Always keep a folded up tote/shopping bag with you in case you spontaneously decide to buy something
— ELECTRICITY
Set a timer on your air conditioning instead of letting it run throughout the night
Better yet, use a fan instead of an air conditioner
Open your windows! Aerate your home!
Allow natural light to enter your home during the daytime, so as to avoid turning on your lights
Switch to LED lightbulbs instead of regular lightbulbs
Turn off any switches in your house when they are not in use
Collect the water from your air conditioner/dehumidifier condenser and use that to water plants, clean surfaces, steam ironing, and flushing toilets. Do not drink it though!
— INTERNET
Delete your all of your unwanted emails
Delete your inactive social media accounts
Try not to post excessively on social media and stop scrolling excessively too. This not only reduces energy usage but also improves your mental health and productivity
Try to keep to one social media app instead of having so many
Reduce your internet usage
Save your eBooks on a thumbdrive instead of on cloud
Use Ecosia instead of Google
Stop being influenced by social media trends that only just contribute to consumerism
Download music instead of streaming
Reduce online shopping
— FOOD
Reduce intake of processed foods
Reduce intake of fish, beef, and dairy
Try eating vegan or vegetarian foods at least once or twice a week
Cook your own meals instead of eating out
Bring your own food containers when taking away food from stores
Beeswax wrap instead of cling wrap!
Buy loose-leaf tea or plastic free tea bags instead of regular tea bags
Eat more mushrooms, vegetables, and fruits and drink more water
Support local farmers
And finally, educate yourself more about ecology and the environment!

of all the makeup products, i think foundation is most annoying and the biggest scam. Annoying because you’re always aware that it’s on your face, you can feel the layer and you can feel it melting. Doesn’t matter if the company making them claims otherwise. It leaves marks on your shirts and jackets. It’s so uncomfortable to wear. The biggest scam because it does not do shit. Without filters and photoshop, you can always tell it’s there. No matter how well you blend it, you can always tell if a person is wearing it. And it does not make the skin prettier. Blemishes and other skin imperfections are usually a little 3D, and you can’t make that disappear. Sure, things like hyperpigmentation can be covered up but also not really. If you truly want it covered up, you have to put so much foundation on the spot that it just starts looking weird. I myself dislike my skin imperfections but still think that putting on foundation would just make it look worse. I’ll be honest I hate how foundation looks on the skin and well maybe I’ll get told to kms for saying this but I think foundation makes the skin uglier and it “gives me the ick” when I see it on someone. Plus it’s unhealthy.
