I submitted a request for an ask game hosted by @streetlight-halo . But then I realized I wanted to do my own version too, so have song #38 on my Revolutionary Girl Utena playlist with Nanami. The song is “I Bet on Losing Dogs” by Mitski, but I think everyone knows that already lol

Blond Jerk Tourney Semifinals 2
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Propaganda from submitters Under Cut
Spike
He is a jerk. He is Spike. Of course he is a jerk. And he is a walking paradox. He was bad, is bad, but got better. No you can't fix him, but you can love him for his efforts.
Nanami Kiryuu
She's the mean girl of the show, and a pretty interesting take on the "bitchy vain school rival of the protagonist" trope. She spends most of her early screentime being a bully and most of her later screentime being both the biggest loser imaginable and deeply sad/troubled (which still does not erase how much of an asshole she can be). She even laughs like your stereotypical mean rich girl. Nanami has so many problems and sucks so so bad. I adore her.
Shes a psychotic bully who seeks to ruin the lives and reputations of any girl who gets more of her brothers attention than she does. Reasons Nanami Kiryuu deserves to win: - she has made many attempts at physical and psychological terrorism against Anthy Himemiya (including a plotted wardrobe malfunction at a crowded social gathering) simply for drawing more of her brother's attention than her - tried to fill Anthy's bedroom with wild animals (a snail, a snake, and a live octopus) to make her out to be a freak only to find that her room was already full of wild animals - she bankrolled an elementary schoolers crush on her to turn him into her personal boyservant - briefly non-personed a member of her bully entourage for sharing an umbrella with her brother - received a luxury cowbell due to a shipping error and smugly wore it to school for weeks flaunting it like high coture - when her bully entourage rebelled against her due to her brothers manipulation she brought them back in line by just straight up beating the shit out of all of them - all in all just a petty, goonish motherfucker (she also does the ohohohohoho anime girl laugh)
she's blond: despite being Japanese her hair is yellow, unlike her brother's. yellow is even her image color. she's a jerk: introduced as a jealous and dishonest scheming bully, she is one of the more outwardly antagonistic characters in a cast where pretty much everyone is a Real Piece Of Work she's the best: the quintessential ohoho-laughing ojou, her fully-realized character arc makes people both laugh and cry even her sidekick is a blond jerk! how many blond jerks have their own blond jerk sidekick?
i don't know what you've heard but she's NOT the kind of girl who lays eggs!
The token mean rich girl of the franchise. Does the classic "ohohoho" laugh. Doesn't like either of our main characters. She never actually seems to get her way, and secretly has a lot of her own problems. also she lays eggs and turns into a cow
Absolutely THE quintessential anime mean girl. I mean literally her laughing is THE meme for the hohohoho anime laugh. Needs attention So Badly and straight up bullies anyone she deems a threat to that (so basically Everyone). I haven’t finished RGU but apparently she duels with the intent to kill and drowned a kitten once because it was taking up too much of her brother’s attention? Also she’s 13 which explains a lot

Sword gays showdown, round 3 of bracket one
Propaganda:
For Xena:
It is HER! The OG woman with a blade!
Her show was so iconic that any lesbian over the age of 30 knows her IMMEDIATELY because this show probably helped her have her awakening. Fandom foremothers and fathers rise up and get your gal a title.
An all around badass, bisexual woman, comfortable with many different bladed weapons. Her show was so much better than Hercules people forget his exists.
Xena is one of the OGs: once a baddie who turned good, she's a warrior who uses swords, daggers, and her trusty chakram to defeat evil and defend the innocent, while traveling with her kickass girlfriend Gabrielle.
She has many skills
For Utena:
Butch lesbian sword woman, unbelievably iconic, she deserves to win it all.
The whole story is about her using her sword abilities to revolutionize the world and fight the patriarchy! And she is in love with Anthy. (Also, FYI, pretty much any character from this is a sword gay)
Her entire deal is that she fights people with swords to protect her girlfriend. Also she's hot
the og sword lesbian
she is literally THE sword gay, her girlfriend is the sheath for the sword
what is gayer than pulling a sword from your bride’s boobs? letting your bride pull a sword from your boobs
She is THE Sword lesbian, her whole show is swordfighting over the Princess. That's the plot, this lesbian has duels over marrying the princess. And their relationship is canon
Sword Lesbian. That’s it.
MADE ME GAY

I'm sure someone who's actually caught up on the Witch From Mercury has made a better post about this, but Witch goes so far beyond the little homages to Utena that other sapphic animation so often slips in - Witch is fully in dialogue with Utena, and it's fucking fascinating. Some of that dialogue is in de-surrealization; Witch has a much more concrete setting that extends beyond the walls of the school, which does not exist in a little bubble of stylized, allegorical melodrama the way the school in Utena does, which let's them examine their equivalent characters in a different light. Witch's take on Saionji feels direct, concrete pressure from his abusive father that reinforce his toxic, abusive behavior, and his repeated emasculation when he fails in his duels isn't something that comes fully from within, it's something enforced upon him by the father who feels shamed by his son's failure to live up to the masculine ideal. Witch's Anthy has not given into the idea that the position of Rose Bride is one that she deserves and must embrace - her abuser cannot isolate her from support and the idea of escape the way that Akio could in the demiplane academy of Utena. Miorine, in fact, has very little in common with Anthy on the surface, but not only is her position in the narrative as a prize to be passed around between duelists the same, but much of the same imagery is used to frame her. She too has a hidden garden she tends to that her abusive fiance destroys in a fit of rage. Her positioning in the opening credits, alongside Suletta, obviously matches Anthy and Utena's positioning. If the show doesn't conspire to frame the activation of Aerial's sword so that it looks to be drawn from Miorine's chest, I'll be genuinely disappointed.
On the whole, I feel like Witch is (funnily enough for a show about space robots) taking the characters and actions of Utena out of that show's more allegorical and surreal atmosphere and grounding them in a firmer reality. And I'm absolutely fascinated by it

Future Career Headcannons for the Characters from Revolutionary Girl Utena, after they escape Ohtori
Anthy Himemiya: Work in/ own a flower shop. Utena suggests this to Anthy herself in the show after Anthy tells her that she only wishes for a future where she can keep tending to her flowers. Anthy smiles at the suggestion.... IF not that... well I got the idea for this after reading a fanfic where Anthy is a veterinary. That would make a good second option for Anthy since animals, like flowers, where her comforts during her imprisonment as the Rose Bride. Also of course she would find Utena, and they could be together without Akio and the games getting in their way,
Utena Tenjô: A Securtiy Gaurd. So in the show Utena is very Chivalrous and wants to protect people "to be like a Noble Prince". Her intentions come from a good place and are not necessarily bad in of themselves. An active job, where she could protect/help people would be good for her. But she also has difficulty sometimes understanding the complexity of others problems, and is prone to being manipulated. I decided against suggesting "Police Officer" because then she could be manipulated again, by a more corrupted Chief/Head of Squadron. I think a security guard would be a better job for her because there is more structure and a clearer (necessary) objective. Observing a surrounding putting a stop to any fight/trouble that break out suits Utena more than investigative questioning or arresting bad guys does.
Touga Kiryuu: I believe Touga is alive in the Anime and head cannon that he grew up into a: Hairstylist. He was a bit of a hard one because I could only really think of one time in the show where he seemed like he genuinely liked or was happy doing something; and that was when he was playing with the kitten. Now he can foster stray cats on the side as a hobby/volunteer work (probably the only volunteer work he would ever do) but it won't pay his bills. So I had to think harder. Now apparently his abusive relationship with his adoptive father is cannon across the board (shudders because no one deserves that). That man is the one who made Touga grow his hair long, and one thing the fandom seems to universally agree Touga should do for himself if/when he is finally able to get away from the bad people in his life is to cut his hair short. Well I actually think that once he is free learning about all different ways to cut and style hair would be something he would really enjoy. It might also be theraputic to be in an enviroment where he gets to exsursize this knowledge/activity regualrly. Lastly hair stylists at shops can sometimes be flirty and chatty to customers, and some will act flamboyant too. I imagine Touga's chair would be pretty popular. Don't date your customers Touga
Kyouichi Saionji: A cook. Saionji might be the most unstable character in the duels. He actually got kicked out of the duels and the school, saw the world outside...came back to Ohtori on his own. Met a girl he could have a happy and healthy relationship with. Decided that was wrong/to much for him, and left her to rejoin a system he knew just wanted to abuse and manipulate him. He is both the dumbest character show and the most aware: From the upside down castle, to the more dangerous parts of loving someone, to Touga's BS, to Akio... Saionji knows it is all fake but always clings to it... except for one breif episode where he took a break and did some pretty positive things for himself... In episode 27 "Nanami's egg" Saionji decides the moon and weather are "beautiful" tonight and that he will leave school grounds on his own and go camping. He also decided to cook (a traditionally feminine role... made all the more feminine by him dawning a frilly apron) his own food. He is out of school, he unconcerned with appearing all powerful and completely masculine. He is relaxed and smiling. Nanami came up to him and tried to instigate a fight, which Saionji responded to by remaing calm and trying to gently talk her down. You have this one moment where Saionji is being completely non-toxic and its peaceful. He is still far from perfect (At least one, and possibly all, of his eggs he found on the forest floor. Not very hygienic). But still, teach the man what a grocery store is and let him cook more meals (and wear more frilly aprons). Maybe he can camp more when he has time off
.... On that note I do ship TougaxSaionji in season 3, and post show. So if they go camping together they will need a pet-sitter for Touga's foster cats. Maybe Nanami can do it? That would be a nice way for her to make up for and show growth after killing Touga's kitten from their childhood.
Nanami Kiryuu: I just mentioned Nanami so I might as well do her next. This girl is gonna want to be a T.V. Reporter. Possibly a weather girl at first, but most likely her goal would be to be a event "gossip" reporter. She is one of the most difficult ones to for groups/people to impress. and many of her questions an comments are super random and outlandish and their is no way to be prepared for what she might say/do. Her viewers though it eat it all up and consider her to be the funniest personnel on T.V. Working as the shows Lead Producer Nanami's long time, platonic, childhood friend: Mitsuru Tsuwabuki. Yeah I don't really ship these two as anything more than good friends..Their show ages aside, I notice that their relationship mostly becomes unhealthy when one tries to make it romantic. But do show genuine care for each other in a platonic sense and are kind enough that you hope their friendship lasts. So yeah instead of them becoming husband and wife with 2.5 kids, make them partners in "crime" (a.k.a buisness) with Nanami being the face and Tsuwabuki being the brains, just as it was between them in the show (as opposed to Nanami's relationship with her cronies where it was flipped).
Miki Kaoru: A math teacher/professor. I very much do not want Miki to grow up to become a concert pianist. The piano is a beautiful instrument and playing it is a wonderful skill. Since teachers do not make that much, Miki can always have a secondary side job tutoring kids in playing it on the weekends. But do not let the piano continue to be the center of his life when it is also such a symbol of his own nativity, and how he has been manipulated into serving others. Both Touga and Akio use the Piano to get Miki to do what they want in the duels. But we also learn that his father used to exploit him and Kozue as publicity tools (which sadly broke them apart). Notice that "The Sunlight Garden" is such a famous piece that even Utena has heard of it, but no one has heard that Miki is the one who originally composed it. He got no credit. He also admits that he kept playign as he started to grow up mostly out of nostalgia for when he and Kozue were younger and had an easier time getting along. Miki's academic success has always felt "just his" in a way that the piano did not, and it has more to do with his present and future than his past. Math seems like it's his best subject, and he is able to be both an effective teacher and develop a positive relationship with Utena and Anthy, when he agree's to tutor them in it. (Up until Anthy has to go and start playing that piano song.) So in adulthood I hope Miki can, not necessarily give up the piano (forget his early childhood), but give his other talents (other stages of his life) some more focus. Math Teacher/Professor Miki, who maybe tutors in music on the side.
Juri Arisugawa: Own a bowling Ally. Juri's three main extra curricular in the anime are fencing, modeling, and bowling. Fencing is her main one. She is acting head of the fencing team. My reasons for not making "Champion Fencer" her career are similar to the ones I gave for not making "Concert Pianist" Miki's. It was an talent and hobby of Juri's that was exploited by both the games and others, and is surround by so much negativity. She took up her sword to prove that miracles do not exist, even though she wishes she believed in them. Also Miki was her only friendly relationship on that Team. All her other subordinates feared her, and she was terrified of Ruka, who was known to be stronger than her. I also rejected Modeling because then Juri would work for an agent and model products that a designer or company wants to make money selling. I definitely think Juri should be her own boss, just in a less hostile environment than Ohrito's fencing team. I like what she said about bowling in "Nanami's Egg": how she does it just because she "thinks it feels good". In what I think was episode 37 Juri states "I used to only think about myself... now I cannot stop think about myself". To me her statment implies that she wants to start thinking more about things that make her happy rather than sad. Juri has got to have some money saved from modeling gigs and Fencing tournaments. Let Juri use that as Seed money to open up a bowling ally, that she can make into a play where she and other can go, and play, and just feel good/happy doing so. Make that Juri's miracle to believe in.
Kozue Kaoru: A School Guidance Counselor. For her I am going the route of "be the person you needed growing up". Kozue is protective of people. You see that in her pushing down the teacher she thought was groping Miki.... except that the teacher was not groping Miki, he was trying to ease Miki's worries. He had his arm around Miki elbow, not his backside like Kozue thought; and Miki was laughing because of a joke not because he was being flirted with. (Has Kozue ever seen her brother try to flirt/react to flirting? Miki is a panicked shaking mess). Both Miki and Kozue were used in a way by adults when they kids, and then again in the duels as teens. Kozue seems to understand that they were used for others pleasures (social/status pleasures first, then other ways) in a way Miki did not. But, she also continuously seeks out relationships where she will still be used and craves, yet rejects, more emotional ones. Examples being how she is mentioned to have several boyfriends that she is physical with but does not have any kind of emotion to them. She yells that she does not need her parents, and then goes out with an adult man the night she learns her dad is getting married again. Lastly she refuses the homemade milkshake her brother makes her saying "I cannot have anything that sweet", does she mean the milkshake or the gesture? The PoBaW comment "We accept the love we think we deserve" really fits Kozue and how she allows other to love her. But she has moments of stepping away from this "I only deserve to be loved as a tool" mindset, Like when she let Miki take care of her at home after "fainting from anemia" or the couple times she goofs off at the piano; when it is just her and trusted friends, who do not care if she is plays the key sloppy. She is making baby steps towards a healthier mindset on relationships in the show. If she can build on that, post Akio and Anthy, then maybe, like Utena, she could use what she went through to keep protecting the "Inocent children" she relates her past too.
Also Maybe she and Miki could work in the same school (NOT Ohtori, but a good school) ,and that way they could still have time together, while also doing their own thing.
Shiori Takatsuki: Well the first thing I want her to be is as far away from Juri as possible. Sorry to people who ship them, but give me one healthy or not toxic moment between them? One moment after their early childhood where one makes the other happy? One moment were being around the other doesn't make them remember just how miserable and angry they are? Pretty much every relationship in the show has some kind of skill/wealth/power imbalance between them, and some kind of love and hate balance too. Utena and Anthy are the main ones, but all the secondary characters were meant to have relationships that mirror certain aspects of UtenaxAnthy. If Touga and Saionji (who at least have some moments of working through their issues together) are a parallel to Utena and Anthy, than I always saw Juri and Shori as a warning sign to them... that if you are not careful and do not work on things then hate, jealousy, and toxicity can destroy once loving relationships. So for these reasons I do not want her to be Juri's business partner, or even run a similar business as Juri's Bowling Ally. Shori would always see Juri's establishment as better, because she saw everything Juri did as better than her, and would never be able to enjoy her own work. Instead maybe she could find some enjoyment in a completely different field. One that maybe doesn't really suit Juri in the long run. Shori is just as pretty as Juri, a little more girly, very social, and she likes being part of a team and relying on others. I think she would be a good model period, not just in comparison to her old rivial.
Wakaba Shinohara: A Nurse. Do I really need to explain this one? Wakaba is like the most caring soul imaginable. She has wonderful optimism, great bedside manner, and is not afraid to call people out on not taking proper care of themselves. Plus I could see her having romantic fantasy's about some rich and successful man coming to stay at the hospital while he was sick, and falling in love with her due to the excellent care she took of him. Let her have her day dreams. The girl would be a fantastic nurse either way.
Keiko Sonoda: It is late and I so not want to pretend Keiko was that deep or complex of of a character. She was a lackey to the queen bee. She hated being a lackey but liked being a bully, because she kept doing that even after Nanami lost her crown. Underneath all that she falls really hard for her crushes, and likes to dress up... So either she can be a housewife to a (hopefully) nice man, or maybe she can go into clothing design.
Tatsuya Kazami: A therapist/Life Coach. The Blackrose tried to manipulate his unresolved feelings for another into making him duel. Something they have sucessfully done to more than 100 others before. But despite Tatsuya's pain over learing his crush loved someone else, and Mikage (a.k.a Akio and Anthy) doing everything that has worked numerous times before, Tatsuya is able to calm himself down. He changes his persepctive and decides "You know what? I don't need to be this upset. My crush liking someone else right now isn't the worst thing in the world. They probably will not date forever. I care about her enough to stay friends and wait for her to decide to give me a chance." Tatsuya did not need a sword. He beat Mikage, depression, despair, and anger all down, with just a few minutes and a handful of sentences.
Mamiya, Mikage, Kanae, and Ruka:.... Well they all die, so they will not grow up to be anything. Very tragic. I suppose not everyone was going to be able to leave that school alive.

every story in utena is the same story every character embodies one of three characters (the one hurt by the world and lashing out because of it, the one naively trying to help and getting them both hurt through it, and the representation of the world and society that makes it so it has to be that way) and every character has been all of those concepts at least once and they become different concepts in the eyes of others and its all so muddy and messy and hurtful and beautiful ❤️ you could say everyone's either an anthy, an utena, or an akio, but anthy's an akio to miki, subtly manipulating him to heteronormativity and utena's an anthy to touga, never trusting him and hating him without realizing that he's being hurt too (and touga's an akio to utena, he kind of deserves it, but he wants so badly to be her dios that he's kind of an utena to her too) and akio was DEFINITELY an utena when he was dios, before he embraced the world anthy created for him where he could be as indulgent as he liked while she took all the responsibility; he tried to save anthy and everyone else and hurt them both. the real revolution is utena choosing to keep trying to save anthy even when it hurt, to say 'yes there is pain in the world, no im not perfect, but we have to keep trying for it to get any better' and then anthy's revolution in the movie where she chooses to stop taking the pain lying down, to separate herself from the fairytale and let herself love and act freely, and nanami's revolution when she refuses to take part in any of it anymore, when she draws a boundary between herself and her brother because as much as she loves him she's realized he's hurting her and forcing the separation so she can walk away. these are not roles that the three characters can cover, theyre outside of the fairytale and grounded in the real world, and thats why theyre so revolutionary

Do you think utena and nanami subconciously consider each other friends? Obviously nanami “hates” utena and utena thinks nanami is a freak, but they spend a not insubstantial amount of time hanging out with and helping each other. There are times when nanami very much seems to prefer the company of utena over that of her yes-gals even though us means probably getting roasted by anthy. And utena seems to be unusually friendly; I think she’d consider most of the people she barely knew and dueled in the black rose arc friends or on their way to it. I don’t think she would ever use the word “acquaintance”
lol this is a cute question bc i think neither of them would consider each other friends (save for the magnanimous way in which utena wants to be friends with everyone) but they are friends. utena is fascinated enough by nanami to hide in the bushes with miki and spy on her throughout the day, which is not the behavior someone would exhibit regarding a person they didn’t care for. nanami “gets her hands dirty” by giving utena advice about end of the world. she thinks utena deserves better, she cares about her, too much to suppress. after all, nanami’s “hatred” of utena reads more as a crush she doesn’t understand and refuses to acknowledge than as a product her jealousy towards utena for being the subject of touga’s affections (frankly, she doesn’t even seem to realize that touga likes her; she’s hyperfocused on anthy for her own personal reasons despite the fact that touga only sees her as a means to an end and not as a person in her own right). and utena clearly finds nanami amusing and sympathetic. when she reads tsuwabuki’s diary and finds out how vindictively and downright cruelly nanami has acted towards anthy, she doesn’t get chauvinistically chivalrously defensive of anthy’s honor the way she does with the rest of the student council, she’s just like “wow you’ve really been up to no good, huh? :D “ she’s almost delighted by nanami’s treachery, like her silly little schemes are more adorable than anything. so, yeah, she thinks nanami is a little freak, but she likes her! she cares about her, she enjoys her company, she wants to help her. which i suppose makes sense, considering that utena’s subconscious drive all along is to free the rose bride of her suffering: in the end, all girls are like the rose bride, and nanami more than most.

For the character bingo, how about Anthy?
Tumblr media
Anthy!!!!!!! One of my blorbos of all time!!!
Tumblr media
okay so. "deeper than she seems" is exactly what the show pulled on us—in the beginning she was presented as just a damsel that Utena has to save, but as the series progresses we get to see more and more behind the role of Rose Bride that reveals her interior life, and then! At the end she's the one who has the power to shut Akio's sick little game down! By walking away!!!!!
"they work better as part of a dynamic" a large part of why Anthy is so fascinating to me is that. She is constantly put into roles by other people—she's an empty vessel for which others project onto, whether as the 'prefect woman' as the Rose Bride, or the 'evil woman' as the Witch, and these roles are cyclical; her character doesn't make sense if you strip that context from her—so much of her is bound up in other people.
This doesn't mean she has no interior life—hell, the entire point of the series is that Utena finally sees her in the end, and that, despite having to survive by taking on the roles others have shoved her into, she is more than those roles, and she has the power to walk away. But so much of her had been shaped by how other people see her, and her character doesn't make sense if you just look at her without looking at how other people interact with her.
I also debated whether to put "they're done DIRTY by fans" but decided against it, bc that only applies to early Utena fandom imo (like, early 2000s when i watched it). Anthy isn't a "perfect victim" and she has a sadistic side, so some of the early discussions about her fall into the trap of either dismissing every petty/hurtful thing she's done OR making her out to be The Most Evil, which are both soooo far off the point imo. Nowadays I think discussions about her are a lot more nuanced, and people embrace that she's not a "perfect defenseless victim who's done no wrong" but she IS a victim and she does deserve support to break free from her abuser/the system that oppressed her. Complex female characters ftw!

Some thoughts about RGU: Blooming Rose of Deepest Black
Tumblr media
I've been an Utena fan for a while but I just watched the musicals and I love them, I need to talk to people about it I'm gonna explode
All my thoughts are under the cut. We'll go character by character analysing the differences between their TV and Musical counterparts.
Utena
She and Anthy take the backseat a lil bit. She is great as always though.
Ami Noujo is quite popular, I can definitely see why. She is funny, incredibly charming and sweet. She was recast from the last musical like all the others.
She tries to set up Anthy and Miki together. Miki is less creepy about his crush so it does come off as kinda wholesome.
I absolutely adore the cheesy ass friendship song she has with Wakaba.
Her most iconic scene is definitely the one at the very end where she hugs Anthy in an almost possessive manner, saying she is here for her. And Anthy just looks like she is dying inside haha. The ominous bells and Akio in the back don't really help things either.
Not really much to say about her, she is the same as her show self.
Anthy
Yuka Yamauchi is, again, great. Anthy is somewhat different from her show version. Not worse, just different.
Musical Anthy is generally nicer(i think.??). Whenever Show Anthy is alone with Utena, she seems disinterested in the people around her. Musical Anthy compliments Miki on his piano skills, for example.
She comforts Juri during the Shiori duel. I genuinely can't tell if this is wholesome or eerie.
In the show, she doesn't care about the black rose duelists (other than telling Mikage he is cruel for making Tsuwabuki duel.) She feels guilt about the whole situation here.
She still has her laugh from the first musical! Giving her this almost condescending laugh is a fun take on her character. She almost dies of laughter when Utena asks if the projector is her brother. I love her so much it's unreal. I will talk about her a lot more if I do a white bud post.
Akio
Speaking of her brother, Akio is also here.
Yu Yoshioka is definitely a standout. His mannerisms and posture show Akio's character brilliantly. It's pretty exaggerated, that's expected from a stage play. I think he is my favourite in the musical.
Akio acts really disinterested in what's happening. He has an air of superiority around him. He carries this vibe for the whole musical.
He is always slouching a bit. He walks slowly, he has one of his hands at his pocket at all times. It really gives him this aloof vibe. There is more but. Someone else can analyze Akio's body language way better than I can.
One thing he does is push people in and out of scenes. Mikage and Mamiya also do this. It shows them being "puppeteers" really well. The most unsettling one is after the first song, as characters are leaving, when he forcefully holds Utena's arm so she can start her scene.
He holds Tokiko's head almost forcefully has he kisses her. Really unsettling.
He also always seems to be standing a bit too close. His scenes with Utena are the best examples of this. Anthy (and Mamiya) also has some scenes like that.
This Akio is less friendly then the one we know. They also toned down the incest stuff. Interesting changes for sure. This musical is mostly for people who have already watched the show, so they have decided to show Akio's actual nature earlier.
Akio sometimes says a character's line with them. It's a cool way to show how he is the puppet master of the story.
Wakaba
Yume Takeuchi absolutely crushed it in the first musical. She continues to be amazing here. I cannot stress enough how much I love Wakaba in this.
She seems sadder in the musical. Almost like she knows her moment od being special will not last long...
Her black rose duel is absolutely heart wrenching. The student council and the school body taunting her during the battle is horrible. My girl doesn't deserve this. Crying and shaking.
Her after the duel scenes are expanded upon. After the battle she goes missing for a few days. During that time, she was making stew for Utena but couldn't perfect it so she took a few days off. I'm sure she is really tired (both mentally and physically) even though she doesn't remember what happened.
And then they have this cheesy song I mentioned before. You could argue it doesn't fit Utena but I enjoyed it. Wakaba even makes Anthy join in too.
It's a minor scene but, I find it absolutely hilarious how she screams upon seeing the exam schedule so hard Utena thinks something happened to her. If I saw English and Math were in the same day I'd scream too. This is right after Mamiya stabs Kozue btw.
They have the prince giving Utena the rose ring and Saionji giving Wakaba the hair clip at the same time. Wow they really did that.
Her elevator scene is my favourite. She is letting it all out. Screaming and crying and the venom in her voice whilte talking about Anthy and Saionji. It's so much.
Saionji
The most pathetic cringefail man in all of Ohtori. I like Tsubasa Yoshizawa's performance overall.
I didn't pay much attention to him. They don't really change anything about his scenes. (Except for the Wakaba duel)
I will give him this, he is pretty funny. His scenes are funny but also seeing saionjeans dancing in ensambles is just. so fucking hilarious to me.
Kozue
Marina Tanoue's acting was okay. Good stuff.
She comes off as a bit more awkward here. Which makes a lot of sense imo. She is messing around with boys a lot but she is only 13. Her awkwardness show up in her hookup scenes too. The boys are a lot more touchy with her.
They toned down the incest in favor of Kozue just wanting to protect Miki. Incest is still there but their relationship is not the same.
She is our first black rose duelist instead of Kanae. Kanae is not that well written in the show so this was for the best.
Miki
Bit of an unpopular opinion, I liked Natsuki Osaki's performance in the first musical. Yuta Higuchi's performance is better but I also like the first Miki too. I am not the biggest Miki fan but the musical definitely made me warm up to him more.
Wow the pedo teacher is so much more creepy here. Seeing real people play these scenes makes them feel even worse. He is a lot more touchy here and Miki actually reacts to him.
I like the part where he is playing music on the side during Nanami's song it's kinda cute.
Nanami
I can't believe they casted the actual Nanami Kiryuu to play herself. Ok fr real tho, Arisa Suzuki is amazing in this.
I'm gonna get burned at the stake for this but I don't like most of the Nanami episodes. I actually really like Nanami being the comic relief, the jokes just don't land for me... But I did actually like the cowbell song she has. She has a cowbell song. She has a co-
I personally found her talking to Juri and Miki part more funny.
There is a scene where she takes Miki's watch and accidentally stops all three of them in time so Wakaba can have her part talking to Saionji. Laughed out loud at that part.
She is exclusively comic relief here. There isn't much she can do outside of that anyways. Touga is not in this and her story line so dependent on him.
Juri
Riona Tatemichi please take my hand in marriage thank you
Juri is the same personality wise as her TV version, other than being slightly gayer. This is a musical after all.
There is a scene where is imagining dancing with Shiori (Shiori also has a scene similar to this).
Juri and Shiori actually kiss??!? It's pretty brief because Utena and Dios slashes their kneecaps. Oh, yeah, during the duels whoever's sword the duelist is using shows up.
I love that instead of working together they end up knocking off each other's roses. That's so in character for them. Also hilarious.
Shiori
Fuyuna Asakura. She might be the best actor in the musical. Because wow, wow. She is a sickeningly sweet type of character. One that turns out to be horrible.
She is way more cartoonish but I don't think that's a bad thing! It's so fun watching her on the stage do her thing. People who didn't like TV Shiori might like this version more. Shiori is one of my faves, I was already primed to like this version of her too.
Each black rose duelist has a scene where they are stabbed by the black rose. Strangely, Shiori is the only person to not scream during it. It just goes to show how little of a push she needed.
She is a lot more shocked about learning she is Juri's crush. The whole situation feels even more tense than the TV version.
My favourite moments of Shiori are in the Akio arc. I don't like Ruka's character, I think he made Juri's story line worse... Buuut I liked watching his dynamic with Shiori. Hopefully we'll get to see Fuyuna Asakura again if another musical happens.
I loved how they handled the Juri/Shiori story line. It's one of my favourite side plots.
And that leaves us with the boys of the black rose. I am gonna talk about them the longest:
Mamiya
I think Mamiya is underrated as hell in this. I haven't heard people talk about the musical but when they do they don't mention him all that much. Yohdi Kondo works so well as him.
He is a lot more active compared to his TV counterpart, If that's the right way to put it. We see him do stuff. He stabs the black rose duelists. He and Mikage work together to make plans more compared to the anime. He is the one responsible for putting Juri's locket in the vase. I appreciate them being more like a duo.
He comes off as a lot more intimidating here too. Him not looking like a 13yo plays a big part, but his mannerisms play a role too. The Kozue scene shows this really well.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
What I most like about him though, is how they show Anthy and Mamiya being the same person. They replace each other from scene to scene constantly. My favourite example is when he takes her place when she is playing the piano. Mamiya is behind her when they're both on stage. They circle around each other at the start too.
He moves around in a similar way to Anthy. He is a lil bit scary in the same way Anthy is. Anthy is my favourite character so i definitely enjoy this a lot.
Also have I mentioned the fact that Akio and Tokiko fuck on his bed. While Mamiya is talking to Mikage in the rose garden, we see the shadows of Akio and Tokiko in a loving embrace on top of his bed. I hope that is not literal. Because if they actually fucked on that bed that would be insane. There are a few ways to interpret this.
There is a theory about how Mikage seeing those two is preceded by Mamiya's death. I think it's true because it doesn't make sense to me how that was enough for Mikage go set the fire. We know Mamiya is dead by this point. He is completely codependent on those two emotionally, he would not take seeing Tokiko with a man right after (maybe a month? Who knows) Mamiya's death well. Merging the imagery together makes a lot of sense.
I didn't think of this at all before but the "Imagine me & Utena" podcast (It's a pretty good podcast!) pointed this out: this is suppose to hint at Mikage and Mamiya's relationship. The sexual/romantic side of their relationship is sort of hinted in the anime and the musical. I could see this being true. This is a really important moment for Mikage. In the anime, we see the cursor point at the leaf during it. You can't have that in the musical. You could have this though.
I also found it funny how Akio's shadow wakes up Mamiya lol.
Mikage
He is the closest thing the musical has to a protagonist. He is in most of the scenes, directly or indirectly. So we spend a lot of time with Hidenori Tokuyama, and I am really torn on him. I'm not really sure if it's his fault either. Mikage is a really subtle character, it's always the little things with this guy. That kind of personality is hard to translate onto stage. You can't see his change in expression when he sees Tokiko and Mamiya talk. You can't see he has a picture of Mamiya on his desk etc etc.
He gets better as we get to the end. Mikage gets a lot more unhinged towards the end, less "subtle" if you get what I mean. Don't get me wrong. I like Hidenori Tokuyama a lot. I just can't connect with him all that much.
There are some notable changes done to him. Mikage as a character always stood out to me from the other men in the show. His much shorter stature is the obvious thing (I don't care about that being represented tbh, he is shorter than Akio and Saionji, that's all you need) but another thing is how he is not violently misogynistic like them. He still is misogynistic, he uses the internalized misogyny of the girls to make them hate Anthy instead of the man in their lives. He would not be able to do what he did without exploiting the harmful systems of Ohtori. He could definitely be interpreted incel-like with his relationship to Tokiko and Mamiya. I guess he is just not as obvious about it? He doesn't show interest in any of the girls. He is obsessed with Tokiko but doesn't even realize she is walking past him. This is pretty noticeably changed in the musical.
He straight up hits on Utena. It's incredibly uncomfortable (as it was meant to be). With Tsuwabuki gone, all of his victims are women. His crush on Tokiko is shown a lot more. It's a lot more sus. I don't see this as a negative change. I like Anime Mikage more but I see the value in making him feel closer to how the other men are.
There are some more minor differences.
Sometimes when he says his lines, Akio says it along with him. For example during his talk with Saionji,
Saionji:  And what do you want from me in return?
Mikage:  Good question...
Mikage:  There's one item that I want from you.
Mikage:  A trifle, really...
There is more of this in the exact same scene btw.
His mannerisms are a bit different too. In the anime, he is approachable but you can tell there is something weird with him. In the Musical, you can tell he is obviously trying to manipulate you. He isn't as charismatic as his TV version. And I kinda like that honestly. It makes it easier for me to connect Nemuro and Mikage in my mind.

Hi I saw your reblog from bottleblondefeelingconned's post and I was wondering what was your opinion on Athanasia's and Claude's relationship in Who made me a princess? I never understood how fans idolized their relationship as the "perfect" father‐daughter relationship when it was toxic.
Full disclosure, this was one of the stories I jumped around while reading because I hated Claude so much, as well as the tropes associated with him. Therefore, this answer isn't as informed as it should be and I may have missed some things. But I don't like leaving people hanging so I'll give what I can;
Notes:
*Anti-Claude
*Take it with a grain of salt
*Ranty
My opinion? I hate it. I hate all relationships like this. I hate the trope where someone has to “earn” someone’s affection to survive, especially when it’s a parent. A child should NEVER have to beg for their parents to love them. More than that a child should never have to live in fear that if they make one mistake, they’ll be killed.
That’s Athanasia’s situation. If Anthy makes one wrong move, she’ll be dead, as proven in the original storyline. He didn’t even give the original Athanasia a trial, he just killed her in cold blood and didn’t even care when he discovered that she was innocent. Like, did he even give her a funeral?
The present Athanasia has to do all the work in the relationship, and Claude barely does the bare minimum.
Plus, there is just a severe level of emotional abuse, intentional or not. Aside from knowing a wrong word will get her killed, it could also get others killed. Hell, in their first meeting, he threatened to kill a chef because she was too scared to talk to him.
The relationship is not only toxic, but it's also deadly. Honestly, I wanted Athanasia to take what she could and flee the figgin’ continent to get away from him. She deserved better than that bastard, and so did the original Athy. Honestly, it's lucky she's cute. Like if she looked like this;
Tumblr media
She'd be dead like the original. (Btw, Patalliro don't listen to what anyone says, you're adorable!)
Claude is a tyrant asshole that deserves death. He killed several innocent people over the years, including a mansion full of his concubines and the servants—if memory serves—to kill his newborn daughter, only stopping when he learned her name. And no. No matter how sad his past is, he is still a murderer with a crown. The fact that he’s occasionally nice to Athanasia doesn’t wash away all the blood on his hands.
And I hate that mindset where an mc is a cold-blooded murderer who killed and kills people daily. But because he’s sweet to the protagonist, she (because it’s always a girl) and everyone else is casually willing to casually forget that.
I get why he's popular, however.
1: He's pretty
2: It's the same reason people like the brooding asshole love interest; it's what many think is a "Beauty and the Beast" scenario. Many love the idea that a kind heart and patience can redeem even the cruelest of hearts. (This is the Daddy edition of that.)
3: People like this have power and others like having this person use this power to please them.
4: People like to feel special, so having someone who a bastard to everyone else but kind to you can make one feel as such.
(I plan to go deeper into this in another post, so forgive the choppy explanation for now.)
However, for me, it’s just like they said in “All Cheating Bastards must Die.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yes, he's occasionally kind to Anthansia and a few others but that doesn't change the pain he caused in the past. And as I've said in other posts, the sad backstory I'm sure he has explains why he did what he did, not excuse it.
Regardless of his reasons, Claude deserves to die and be forgotten just like the original Anthy was, if only for the women he slaughtered.
As I said, I haven’t thoroughly read this story and I don’t want to, so I can’t give the best answer, and I may be unfair. Sorry, but this is the best answer I can give at this time.
If you want to see the father redeemed done right, I suggest reading, “Father, I don’t want this marriage!” Because the one who has to change is the FATHER, the one who messed up. He is the one reaching out and endearing himself to his child, doing everything he can to fix their relationship.
Don’t get me wrong, the MC is scared of her father at first for similar reasons as Anthy but it’s revealed that this was a misunderstanding.

Ah! A fellow Utena fan! Now that's a show that deserves better from modern audiences. It has been so uwufied just bc it's sapphic when it's not a uwu show at all. I have a soft spot for the movie just for the scene of Anthy and Utena dancing to At Times, Love. But damn. Do ppl not get Utena either. Idk where ppl get the idea that anything sapphic is considered uwu and there was a time that on twitter ppl where recommending Utena as a cute sapphic anime. They could not have been so off the mark. But when is anything that involves when not pigeonheld into stereotypical "cute" and fragile femininity? lmao
ppl really forgot that bubbleline had to fight CN to be canon. 😔 homophobia has truly been on the rise and it sucks that there is still so much infighting over dumb shit in queer fandom spaces. like... when will we break free of the model minority mindset within ourselves?
Thankfully, people actually advise to be mindful of the triggering content in RGU but now you have weirdos who think it having that stuff At All is Bad. Like. I'm tired. Sometimes you just need to Let Shit Exist As Is. Sure you can criticize it, but acting like that content should never be explored or presented is unhinged and dangerous. Just go live under a rock if you're that highstrung.
Like no matter how "wholesome" you try to be, bigots are still going to hate you. Cops are already going to be awful and you're joining IN on the fucking policing? That's just dumb!

I'm taking that invitation to send more asks!
Shiori, 2/11/26/28
2. When I think I truly started to like them (or dislike them, if you've sent me a character I don't like)
I'll be honest, at first I found her quite annoying LOL Mostly bc I was tired of how every character in rgu is an insufferable asshole; the fact she turned out to be a vindictive lil shit just reinforced that frustration lol Then, in said Black Rose saga break, I found the parallels between her and Wakaba compelling, so I softened my view on her.... But I didn't truly liked her until I watched the movie LMAO (which I did after I watched ep34 bc we were on another stream break lmao). That moment when she car crashes made me laugh so hard for days, I was instantly endeared. Every single Shiori scene became retroactively awesome 😂😂
11 What’s the first thing you think about when thinking about the character?
That I quite like the way her self-loathing is portrayed. Aside from liking when a girl's self-hatred is portrayed in outward, deeply destructive ways, I liked the portrayal on two other levels. It's clear that Shiori's self-disgust is predicated in her inferiority complex, but I quite like how both her efforts to conform to normalcy and not knowing how to deal with Juri's affection fuel that self-disgust and are kind of recursive. That side of the internalized bigotry making issues of self-loathing all the more corrosive and self-sustaining is not a corner you often see turned, but it's so fitting in here. The other layer I enjoy is that she's clearly trapped in this self-destructive, self-sustaining loop of terrible behavior and doesn't know how to break out, it weirdly helped me back when I watched it lol There's not a single good side of Shiori we know about, and, yet, the sense she needs to break out of that pattern is so palpable. It doesn't matter if she's deserving of better, she needs to break free and stop hurting herself and others. That was weirdly really helpful back then.
26. When do you think they were being "themselves" the most?
TRICK QUESTION. I keep liking girls with strong outer facades, huh? But I have three different scenes in mind. First, when she's talking to Utena and Anthy in her dorm room— when the coversation starts with the usual pleasantries, Shiori's tone is quite high pitched and cutesy (lol), but as she starts trailing off about the relationship she and Juri used to have and how she's undeserving of it, it lowers to a whisper and is overall a more naturalistic tone. I think that was a rare showing of authenticity from her; the fact she gets abashed once she realizes she's said too much and goes back to her Cute Girl voice is So Telling. The other two scenes are her elevator breakdown and her bitter tirade when Juri pays her a visit in ep 29, because they're showing all the ugly, complicated and visceral feelings she tries to keep under a lid (the Voice Actiiiiing for her is kinda Absurdly Great. Like Amazing Performances.)
28. The most unnecessary thing they ever did?
Wouldn't be a rgu character if she didn't do a series of unnecessary, petty decisions, one after another. That said, it was sending that letter to Juri, the one Juri reads in ep7 LMAO it's just so wildly petty and vindictive while still being written in that insidious tone, kinda hilarious LOL Specially when you take into account, by her own admission, that dating the guy made her feel more pathetic. She's jsut. Trying to lick her wounds at all costs there, and doesn't even get the satisfaction of a reply (did she Seriously expect a reply to That???). The fact she pathetically repeats the "You must hate me for what I've done" line in her self-pitying non-apology at the balcony just makes it funnier lol This girl is jsut a riot.

Utena and Russell for the character bingo asks!! <3
Utena huh? Hm... Admittedly this one's a bit difficult for me, considering I'm not very far into the show so far, but I'll do my best! I definitely do think she's a very interesting character so far, very clearly a central character in what the series has to say about gender and gender norms, what with how she goes against this system on some levels by being very different from what society expects of a girl, and objecting to mistreatment of Anthy, but also goes along with this system in other ways through her fixation on the role of the prince and her participation in the duels themselves. I've heard about some very interesting comparisons between her and Miki in how both think they're defying the system while participating in it, and looking after Anthy while still relegating her to an idealized role and getting something out of the idea of trying to "save" her, but don't intend any malice in it. But while I'm certain of this for Miku I haven't been able to see the full extent of this for Utena yet. It'll be interesting to see that explored as we go on.
Tumblr media
And Russell. Oh boy, you asked me about Russell. I have so many feelings about this guy. Especially considering the time spent with him in my source and my connection to him through that. And my connection to someone who kins him. That being said, I will at least attempt to organize my thoughts into something that makes sense in the context of this meme.
Tumblr media
Further elaboration:
Is it really headcanons in my position? Is it? Who knows, but I certainly do know a lot of things about him and have a lot of ideas about what he's like that go beyond what's officially stated in canon.
Also I was undecided to count the "fandom mean" part, because some people do have the Objectively Correct opinion that Russell deserved better and want to give him nice things as a result. However, I've also seen some circles that seem to enjoy putting Russell through angst just a bit too much, as if he didn't already get enough of that in canon as is. -_-

every story in utena is the same story every character embodies one of three characters (the one hurt by the world and lashing out because of it, the one naively trying to help and getting them both hurt through it, and the representation of the world and society that makes it so it has to be that way) and every character has been all of those concepts at least once and they become different concepts in the eyes of others and its all so muddy and messy and hurtful and beautiful ❤️ you could say everyone's either an anthy, an utena, or an akio, but anthy's an akio to miki, subtly manipulating him to heteronormativity and utena's an anthy to touga, never trusting him and hating him without realizing that he's being hurt too (and touga's an akio to utena, he kind of deserves it, but he wants so badly to be her dios that he's kind of an utena to her too) and akio was DEFINITELY an utena when he was dios, before he embraced the world anthy created for him where he could be as indulgent as he liked while she took all the responsibility; he tried to save anthy and everyone else and hurt them both. the real revolution is utena choosing to keep trying to save anthy even when it hurt, to say 'yes there is pain in the world, no im not perfect, but we have to keep trying for it to get any better' and then anthy's revolution in the movie where she chooses to stop taking the pain lying down, to separate herself from the fairytale and let herself love and act freely, and nanami's revolution when she refuses to take part in any of it anymore, when she draws a boundary between herself and her brother because as much as she loves him she's realized he's hurting her and forcing the separation so she can walk away. these are not roles that the three characters can cover, theyre outside of the fairytale and grounded in the real world, and thats why theyre so revolutionary

I'm actually so completely killed by utena rn, posting meta from episode 31/32 [the nanami fight]
Something else that I think is happening About Nanami is that... "Because she's childish, she's naive to the ways of the world and such," right? And she wants to be SPECIAL it's not like she's Unaware that her brother mistreats, ignores, and uses up every girl he's ever met, No she's PERFECTLY aware of it she CANNOT STOP knowing about it constantly [AND THIS IS TRAUMATIZING! to think Oh, this is the way the world works, this is the way women are treated when they have feelings like mine, they are kept around only as much as they're useful and then they're tossed to the side] Nanami Wants To Believe This CAN'T be the case for HER, right? She loves her brother! her brother can't be a bad person for this, Justice HAS to exist in the world, and if things are being Just that means her brother is right, and all the women who flock around him and are then bent out of shape are Wrong, but because the world is just and good this could never happen to her. She's The Good One, she's Not like Anyone Else, and Unlike THE MOB if she's just totally correct in everything she does, if she upholds the system, SHE WILL BE REWARDED! YAY!! And this whole "growing up" phase for her is showing her that... no... The system you uphold that chews up and spits out girls like this isn't going to reward you for special behavior. You are going to get chewed up and spit out like everyone else, this is the real result of your actions. [And I think Nanami slapping Anthy here is her final victim-blame, that she wants to reconcile that when bad things happen to people they MUST deserve it. Nanami isn't a bad person like Himemiya though Of Course, so she needs to prove how much better she is than everyone. "GAIN THE TRUST OF THE SYSTEM AGAIN"] > Looking back @ the car scene knowing that Touga is obsfucating that they really are related and seeing like- HE'S MISUNDERSTANDING HER THE SAME WAY EVERYONE ELSE DID AS WELL. She doesn't wanttt a romantic relationship with him [in which being brother and sister would be an obstacle] she just wants a close, real brother that respects and protects her. Equals! GOD.
