When art becomes intense, loneliness emerges, clarity emerges, strangeness emerges. If it doesn’t go that far, it’s a lie. My past writing has been like wine, and not even the best wine. But from now on it will be like water - clear, bright, and rippling without overflowing - or so I hope. (Santoka, Teihon Santoka Zenshu)

Hector tapped on the edge of his cup, unable to raise his eyes to his parents. He knew exactly what this little tea party was about, knew that it was more than simple parental desire to see their oldest child. They were trying to convince him that coming back would be best. That he could do more good for the fae if he was helping stop crime at home, rather than trying to protect them in a world where they really shouldn’t have been.
And still, he had played the part of the dutiful son. He’d accepted the invitation and listened to all their talk of local gossip, their mentions of the other factions of magical beings, and the new threats that appeared to be rearing their heads to them all.
‘H, you really -’
‘No,’ Hector said, rather more forcefully than he’d wanted to. His mother’s hands slipped ever so slightly on the teapot she’d carefully been pouring. But she held firm, kept pouring as if unaffected by the outburst. Hector, however, refused to brush this under the leaves again. ‘I can’t come back.’
‘After everything Hector, really?’ his father asked, gaze skimming carefully to his wife for a moment before he rested his two-toned eyes on Hector.
After years in the other world, Hector was not so easily threatened by that look of authority from his father. Instead of acquiescing, Hector stood up. His mother straightened, her eyes trained on him as if trying to mentally change his mind somehow.
‘I have things to do there. Cases that need closing. And, when they’re done, there’ll be more. And I’ll keep working on them, with my partner who’s magical in ways we can’t even explain. Because it’s what I want to do.’ He placed a quick kiss on his mother’s cheek; patted his father’s shoulder. ‘I’ll see you soon,’ he promised, before walking out of the house, knowing he was going to have to calm down a little if he didn’t want to drench the office with uncontrollable magic.
Still, it had been worth it. Hector finally felt as though the weight that had rested on his chest for months now had lifted. He just hoped that his parents would one day understand. That they would realise what he was doing was better than anything he could do at home.

"You're a 15-Year-Old in a Bespoke Suit and Nobody Died!"
Tumblr media
Well...it wasn't quite that nobody died, Angeline (honestly it's a miracle that Holly doesn't have a complex about beloved CO/mentors dying on her watch), but based on Artemis's reaction to you buying him jeans and a t-shirt, it's fair to say that we might need to recalibrate expectations. Let's talk Artemis Fowl and the Atlantis Complex.
If this is your first time with us, please be aware that THIS IS A SPOILERIFIC ZONE below the break!
Headings worked so well for me the last time that we're going to keep going with them here, because there is a lot to talk about for this book!
Turnball Root
They say that every good villain is the hero of their own story. You flip the perspective on Turnball's story, and it's a twisted version of Romeo and Juliet surviving to become Anthony and Cleopatra. Just with more black magic runes.
Turnball makes me so, so sad as an antagonist, because you don't fall in love and enthrall the object of your affection while hanging on to the signs of your glory days if you have any level of self-worth and self-respect. Opal Koboi revels in her own inflated sense of self-worth, but everything about Turnball screams that he has some deep unresolved issues with himself as a person. That makes it really hard to enjoy him as a villain the same way I enjoy Opal, but I appreciate the nuance and weight and depth to his character that the massive red flags herald. If something had gone just a little bit different, if Turnball had been confident in his worth and his value, he could have been much more like his little brother. Julius Root was not perfect, but self-worth was not an issue he dealt with.
Artemis says it himself at the end of the book: Nobody wins when Turnball is "defeated." Anthony and Cleopatra have died by their own hands, and neither Rome nor Egypt are better for it.
Leonore talking Turnball down and basically saying he can help her or stop her is also heartbreaking, because it's so, so clear that she would have loved him without the thrall rune and--again--if Turnball had had the confidence to let her love him on her own, they could have been happy without the evil schemes and separation while Turnball was in jail. Leonore doesn't get a whole lot of character development in her own right, which makes sense for a middle-grade/YA-ish book that just doesn't have the space to develop yet another secondary character, but she's compelling in the sketch we do get, and I believe that Turnball would actually throw everything over for her. His last words in the book are in service to Leonore and Leonore's well-being as he helps her. He couldn't have done anything else, and that choice says so, so much about what could have been.
For me, Turnball is ultimately a tragic figure who was covering his own insecurities and self-loathing with sheer drama and villainy. He absolutely does bad things, and I'd even go so far as to say that he's a bad guy, but the tragedy is that he simply did not have to be.
The Atlantis Complex: Artemis and Orion
Ok, so my book is literally about representations of physical and mental disability in Shakespeare, but this freaking book manages to be more nuanced and more real in terms of the fact that mental health is COMPLICATED. Experiencing it is complicated. People's reactions to signs and symptoms of mental illness is complicated (and often objectively ableist and shitty). Everyone involved is often trying their best, and often it's just not enough. Sometimes it is.
While I was conceptualizing this review, I spent so much time going back and forth on minutiae: What was a positive representation, what was a negative representation, who said what and was it hurtful or not, the nuances of having symptoms in life-or-death situations. It got to the point where I could have written an entire post just about this, but then it occurred to me: I don't have to do that, because if I'm going back and forth this much and if there is so much evidence for both positive and negative representation, then the book isn't trying to do one or the other: it's simply allowing Artemis's mental illness to exist in the story. Which is MIND BOGGLING since so many stories--if they deign to mention disability at all--make the disability the whole thing. Frankly, Colfer pulled off a story where Artemis experiencing psychosis during a life-or-death situation was just...part of the story. It wasn't the main focus, it didn't warp the rest of the world and the plot around it, and it acknowledged the complicated peice where it can be both a help and a detriment in the situation.
Basically, it was allowed to be messy. And it was allowed to be complicated. And it was allowed to be emotional. But nothing derailed the plot.
There was also something really interesting that I'm not going to articulate terribly well here because I'm still processing it, but I want to at least nod to it. In terms of negative and harmful stereotypes about mental illness, Colfer manages to do this thing where he acknowledges that they exist, and there are moments where characters lean into them, but almost as soon as they do, another character pops up to call bullshit on it. For example, at one point Foaly makes a (totally in-character) crack about Dr. J. Argon strapping Artemis into "the crazy chair," and then immediately calls himself out on having said something absolutely shitty. "Crazy" is an ableist term, but it gets tossed around all the time in the real world. For Foaly to make the crack and then immediately walk it back isn't something you see often, but I think showing the crack, immediate self-correct, and then improved behavior going forward is critical. Humans are imperfect, but to self-correct and change for the better is important, and showing that is rare and I really appreciate it.
Ok, I'm going to stop ramling in circles about something I'm still processing, and move on to talking about Orion. I'm going to treat Orion as a separate character here, partly because the book does and partly because I am a) not an expert in mental illnesses and b) do not personally experience any and I don't want to speak from experience I don't possess. What I do want to say is that writing Orion as a blatant charicature of a fantasy medieval hero is AMAZING and HILARIOUS and holy cow I loved it so much. The contrast with Artemis is excellent, and the fact that ORION took Butler's lessons to heart was fabulous.
Artemis and Angeline
The other amazing relationship in this book is Artemis and an Angeline who knows exactly what Artemis's deal is. Between telling Artemis that girls are frightened of him because he's "a 15-year-old in a bespoke suit and nobody died" and her insistence on him spending at least two days a week in the jeans and t-shirt she's bought him, Angeline is absolutely fabulous.
Artemis and the Butlers
Oh Butler...dear heart, you get done so dirty by the son of your heart in this book. You were hired to be a bodyguard and what Artemis needs more than anything in this book is mental health support. You've done well with his mental health so far, but this is so, so far outside your wheelhouse. And then Artemis is one of perhaps three people on earth who know how to actually hurt you, and he DOES. He pushes you away, he invents a threat to Juliet, and then worst of all, he takes away your trust in him. Butler needs therapy almost as much as Artemis does in this book, and it's just crushing to see their relationship take this pounding. When the bullet is your principle's brain, a bodyguard cannot stand between bullet and principle.
On top of all that, Butler has to make the phonecall to Angeline explaining that Artemis has Atlantis Complex. That is one of the worst possible phonecalls to make, but he does it and he does it with grace and compassion. Domovoi Butler is objectively too good for this world.
Juliet Butler is out here living her best life, and frankly we love her for that. She's loving the hell out of her professional wrestling career, and she's found her own feet to stand on, not only with Butler but also with Artemis. She quite rightfully calls out his bullshit a couple of times, which is just delightful. She marries the girly/feminine stuff with the totally badass (and traditionally coded masculine) beautifully in a way that finds joy in both. So many "strong female characters" are strong because they reject everything girly/feminine, but Juliet gets BOTH. It's my favorite thing.
And her match against a dickhead gnome at the end is A+ no notes.
Holly and That One Time She Dated Her CO???
Ok, so I don't actually have a whole ton to say about this except...OMG OMG OMG HOLLY AND TROUBLE WENT ON A DATE!!!!! Which has to be immediately followed up with "Is this how Holly's complex around beloved and respected commanding officers dying horribly on her watch manifests?" And then naturally we have to side eye the absolute hell out of Trouble Kelp because dating subordinates has got to violate workplace ethics. Not that either Holly or Trouble have a great relationship with the rulebook, but Trouble is in charge now, so....Broski. Meet rulebook.
Now, all of that said...I am so mad that this date happened off-page. I would have killed to see it. Especially if Grub showed up at any point in the evening.
Finally: Artemis asking if Holly and Trouble have any plans to bivouac in the near future is INCREDIBLE and deserves both a slow clap and a slap.
A Brief Moment to Hate on Ark Sool
Ark Goddamn Sool full-on went to the dark side. He is MERC-ING for Turnball Root. He doesn't even have the scrap of integrity or loyalty to join the crew properly, he's in it for the goddamn money. We HATE Ark Sool. So. Freaking. Much.
Butler crushing him to death is better than he deserves, but it is IMMENSELY satisfying.
Concluding Thoughts
Overall, I have a lot of affection for this entry in the Artemis Fowl series. It has a complexity and a humor to it that I actually don't think any other book in the series has ("I'm the nut!" anyone?). It does sort of bring the arc of the series as a whole to a grinding halt to have a tragedy about Turnball Root and give Artemis Atlantis Complex, but I'm not mad about it. There is some really damn good character work here, and it paces quickly enough that the book really rocks on by as you read.

Your unpopular opinions on Auradon kids as a whole.
Unpopular opinions?? On Auradon kids?? As a whole??
... How about I just write out few vaguely related headcanons instead.
It's a surprise that more of the AKs aren't messed up horribly: just look how their parents grew up!
Arabella from Rise did have a corruption arc. I'm not taking criticism on that one. Why else would she try to take the trident?
Speaking of corruption arcs. I'd love to see Lonnie's corruption arc. I mean. Auradon doesn't let her into sports team?? What they did to her name?? They make her the king's sole bodyguard?? They treat the Isle kids like that??
(They had it coming)
I have not yet though how would such arc look, but one day I will.
On vaguely related note, Lonnie would vibe with the pirate crews. (They are all just down to fight.)
Audrey's aro ace. Mostly because I am projecting and also because it just fits, you know? (She wants to be in love with Ben, she wants their relationship to be perfect. She needs a relationship to prove that- that what?)
I'm having feelings over it.
And I also think that Audrey would vibe with Anthony Tremaine. They have never met in canon and I don't care.
Ally of Neverland. That should count as unpopular opinion, right?
Also, fancy that, Opal is literally Celia's and Freddie's aunt, but the Faciliers can keep their family drama quiet, unlike someone.
I think my bias towards the Villain kids is showing. It's is showing isn't it.
Let me try and get back on track.
Ben loves reading. It's his bonding activity with his mom.
The reason Audrey's parents aren't in the picture? They decided to move back to the forest and thirteen years old Audrey said „Absolutely not-“
Audrey's bonding activity with her dad is sword fighting. (Because one can NEVER have enough ladies with sword.) She is not nearly as good as Lonnie, though.
(She needs therapy. Oh my god, she needs so much therapy.)
...And I better shut up about Audrey too.
I wish Jordan was there more. I like her.
Doug. Is Doug. He is there. No hate to him but Evie can do better.
I mean. I loved her first movie arc, I did. But that's what it was. A self growth arc. Sorry not sorry, Doug.

Yosa Buson is the second of the old haiku masters, writing between Basho (1644-1694) and Issa (1763-1827).
Widely known during his lifetime - more for his paintings than his poems - Buson’s notoriety and influence declined after his death only to be reestablished by Masaoka Shiki (1867-1902), who immersed himself in Buson’s haiku, understanding Buson’s work as a precursor to his own.
Shiki - the father of modernist haiku - saw Buson as perhaps the greatest of the old masters, writing that Basho has the “reputation as the incomparable haiku poet,” but Buson is “equal to, or even superior to Basho.”
Still, aspects of Buson’s work remain underappreciated and overlooked. Specifically highlighted in this collection are Buson’s warmth and dynamic portrayals of longing.
Poems of Yosa Buson is a short and varied collection of Buson’s haiku. Each translation is accompanied by the original Japanese text and English transliteration (romaji).

any solid character studies on crowley? :0
Here are some...
Imperfect by IneffableDoll (T)
In 1967, Crowley buys a plant.
temptations still, deep, and sweet by Aurelia_Elysian (T)
In the Garden, the original one, Crawly was magnificent. He was huge, not grotesquely so like the primordial titanoboa, but big enough. His black coils shimmered iridescently with hints of opal around each scale edge, and bright lapis lazuli diamonds patterned down his back. His favorite basking spot was draped all over Eve, with his chin resting on her shoulder so he could dart his tongue out to investigate her hair.
But the world turns, with all its changes both welcomed and not. Yet all changes come accompanied with a constant, and Crowley’s constant through his trek on earth was...something. It was something.
More of a March Than a Saunter or a Fall by D20Owlbear (T)
For every grain of the Sands of Time there is a story, a moment or an eternity contained within it. Immortality, functional or otherwise, is an interesting sort of thing - gaining weights filled with this sand and never shedding it to age properly. But what happens when it falls from one, especially amongst the Desert of Time with its rolling dunes? For each of the sands that fall, like grains in an hourglass, another story and moment passes. Crowley-centric look through time, told in snapshots of times not covered in the show and book.
Sand whirled around three figures. Demon, Angel, and the Prince of Men. And suddenly it all fell away and they were back. In Tadfield, at the airbase, on a vast expanse of lifeless concrete that gave way to fire and brimstone as Satan clawed his way to the surface.
And Adam, the Young one, knew exactly what to do.
Crowley and Aziraphale believed in him so desperately that, even if Adam’s powers hadn’t been enough to shape this reality, he had the might of an agent of both Hell and Heaven at his fingertips.
The Quiet, Persistent, Gnawing Unease by LollipopCop (M)
Aziraphale looked away, and poured himself another drink. “In any case, that looked unpleasant and I’m sorry to hear that’s a regular occurrence for you.”
Crowley felt weird, like he wanted to yell and punch a wall and cry and hug Aziraphale all at once. He settled on being defensive. “Oh, save it. You probably think it’s what we demons deserve for our wickedness.”
Aziraphale’s gaze turned serious. “You don’t deserve that, Crowley,” he said, quietly but firmly. ~ An exploration of the serious toll Hell's physical and psychological grip has taken on Crowley since his Fall.
For Want of a Seed by cassieoh (M)
A plant grows, a plant dies, Aziraphale takes a wrong turn, and a few truths are revealed. The first of which is this; painful truths cannot be buried for they will sprout and flourish while one is busy having lunch and raising supposed devil-spawn. From this, each of our heroes takes a single lesson; Aziraphale learns that it is better to never bury truth in the first place and Crowley learns the altogether less palatable lesson that truths should be mulched into nothingness when one has the chance, lest they regrow.
I will leave it up to you, dear reader, to decide who is correct.
(aka: post-Apocalypse Crowley finally deals with the issues he's been ignoring for the last 6000 years)
Demonology and the Tri-Phasic Model of Trauma: An Integrative Approach by Nnm (T)
As soon as Aubrey Thyme, psychotherapist, had opened her office door and seen her new client, Anthony J. Crowley, sitting in her waiting area, she was observing and assessing him. At first glance, she paid attention to the following:
--His clothing was expensive and stylish; --He wore very strange but noticeable cologne; --His relationship to the seat he occupied could only, very loosely, be described as “sitting;” --He looked angry; --He was wearing sunglasses.
What Aubrey Thyme, a professional, thought, upon first seeing her new client was: you’re going to be a fun one, aren’t you?

Riven's Basic Info
Tumblr media
Name: Riven Marcus Hewlett
Faceclaims for Riven came very easily, surprisingly. For the 60s, we have the amazing Frankie Avalon (almost any beach movie from the 60s). For the 80s, there’s Jason Bateman (Teen Wolf Too). For the 90s, I picked Brad Pitt (Fight Club). And, finally, we have Dacre Montgomery for the present (Stranger Things).
Nicknames: Riv, Rivet, and “you ass” (Vivien’s favorite way to greet him)
Age: 19
Date of Birth: October 27
Zodiac: Scorpio
Birthstone: Opal and Pink Tourmaline
Nationality: American and Italian
Sexuality: Straight (though even he questions it sometimes lol)
Birthplace: Salem Hospital, Salem, Massachusetts
Current Residence: Whipple Avenue, Laconia, New Hampshire
Occupation: Photographer/videographer for local businesses and the newspaper, junior tattoo artist at a piercing/tattoo shop in Laconia, Dungeon Master for a small D&D group, drummer in a band he made in high school, and he’s, obviously, a competitive skater. He wants to become a director someday, but he’s saving his money for now.
Talents/Skills: He somehow knows people's secrets without having them tell him, he draws things pretty realistically, he’s known for telling the truth all the time, but he’s a fairly convincing liar, and he’s great at filmmaking, which is useful for any short films Vivien and the boys want to make.
Birth order: Only child
Parents: Anthony Hewlett and Emmaline Russo
Signature:
Tumblr media
Height: 6’2” or 189cm
Eye Color: Hazel
Hair Color: Auburn brown, but it looks golden brown in certain lighting
Glasses or contact lenses: He needed glasses as a child, but had surgery to correct his eyes once he turned 18.
Distinguishing features: His nose crinkles when he laughs and he has two tattoos - a snake on his collarbone and lightning on his ribcage - but he and Vivien both agreed to get matching space tattoos when she turns 18.
Mannerisms: Tapping his feet along to music whether it’s in his head or not, constantly checking the time when he’s nervous, picking at the skin around his fingernails, and he always stacks up plates and silverware for waitstaff when he eats out so it will be easier for them to take.
Health: Had terrible eyesight as a kid, is allergic to pollen, and has allergy-induced asthma.
Hobbies: Protecting those he cares about, contributing to chaos, taking in injured animals, playing drums (he’s the one who taught Vivien how to play), and exploring abandoned places (once again, if you think that’s how Vivien started, you’d be right).
Greatest flaw (in their opinion): How selfless he can be sometimes. Riven treats others’ lives as more important than his own and will do anything it takes, even sacrificing himself, to keep them safe. A prime example of this is his relationship with Vivien. She is like a little sister to him and has been for most of his life, so he would do anything for her. He’s almost gotten arrested to protect her once when they were in an abandoned school and someone called the cops on them. He puts himself at risk for those he loves and he knows that will be his downfall someday.
Best quality (in their opinion): His best quality and greatest flaw are pretty much the same things - his infinite loyalty to those he considers friends/family.
Biggest fear: Dying. He’s had a few close calls before - one including a skating accident and another coming home from a band session on wet roads - and the thought of dying genuinely terrifies him.
Hogwarts House: Hufflepuff
Favorite ice cream: Chocolate fudge brownie (or, as he calls it, Death By Chocolate)
Favorite color: Sage green
Favorite numbers: 33 and 74
Favorite songs: Teenage Dirtbag by Wheatus, Perfume by Lovejoy, and In The End by Linkin Park
A place they want to visit: Puerto Rico (mostly for the old cars that are very popular there)

Families in the descendants universe;
Tumblr media
Summary; in this post my friend @descendants-extended and I will be listing how certain characters are related (headcanon wise). It will feature characters from sequels, ouat, and disney shows that are spin off of movies. It mentions some but not all ocs.
👨‍👩‍👧‍👦👨‍👩‍👧‍👦👨‍👩‍👧‍👦👨‍👩‍👧‍👦👨‍👩‍👧‍👦👨‍👩‍👧‍👦👨‍👩‍👧‍👦👨‍👩‍👧‍👦👨‍👩‍👧‍👦👨‍👩‍👧‍👦👨‍👩‍👧‍👦👨‍👩‍👧‍👦👨‍👩‍👧‍👦👨‍👩‍👧‍👦👨‍👩‍👧‍👦👨‍👩‍👧‍👦👨‍👩‍👧‍👦👨‍👩‍👧‍👦
Agnarr, Arianna, and Wilhelmina/Willow are siblings.
Their paternal is Tarzan's mom (who we'll call Alisha).
This makes Elsa, Rapunzel, and Anna cousins and makes Tarzan their 2nd cousin.
Rapunzel and Flynn have 3 kids-- Anxelin, Ruby, and Finn. That would make their kids Elsa and Anna's 1st cousin once removed and Tarzan's 2nd cousin once removed.
Rapunzel is Mother Gothel's adopted daughter which would make Cassandra, Ginny, and The Gothel twins (Mason and Glenn) her adoptive siblings. Which would make them the aunts and uncles of Anxelin, Ruby, and Finn.
Kit has a twin named James (a ouat character) and the two of them are Florian's cousin.
Florian and Snow are the God parents of the dwarves' kids (Jane and Doug included) as well as Chad.
Florian would be Chad's first cousin once removed and James would be Chad's uncle.
Chad's uncle, James, is Carlos' father in mine so they'd be cousins.
Anastasia and the Baker have four kids--Anthony, Aaron, Amara, and Anya. They would be Chad's cousins.
Drizella and Hans have 7 kids-- Dorothy, Daphne, Debbie, Delanie, Dixie, Dotty, and Dizzy.
Hans' is the brother of The Stabbington brothers, also known as Rudo and Runi. This would make him Madame Medusa and Lady Caine's brother in law.
It would also make him the uncle of Darlina, Iggy, Cormac, Tega, and Rex Stabbington-- the Stabbington cousins.
His brother, Lars, is married to Charlotte La Bouff. Which makes her his sister in law.
They have five kids -- Hans Jr, Carolina, Aloisia, Brendan, and Viktor. That makes them the neices and nephews of Hans.
Maximilian, another brother of Hans, married Alana-- Ariel's older sister-- making her Hans and The stabbington twins' sister in law.
They have two kids together-- Wilhelm and Renata.
Mozenrath is Aladdin's paternal half brother and Cassim's son.
He and Sadira are married and they have several kids-- Omar, Renz, Diya, and Reza.
Aladdin and Jasmine are married and have several kids--Jenna, Rafi, Salima, Aziz, Amira, and Jansher Zaahir. They are @descendants-extended 's ocs as well as Mozenrath's kids (minus Omar and Reza).
Mama Odie has two kids-- Dr. Facilier and Opal. This makes Dr Facilier's kids-- Uma, Freddie, Coral, Celia, and Francis -- Opal's nieces and nephew. (Francis is @dragoneyes618 original character not mine).
Gaston and Laurette were married and had Gaston 2-
Laurette's sister-- Claudette-- had 3 kids; Claire, Curtis, and Cat. Their father is unknown.
Lefou and Stanley are married and Paulette was their surrogate for Petra, Felicity, Fleur, Lilette, Sylvie, La Foux Doux, and Lefou Deux.

Helga Sinclair is Hunter de vil and Harry and Mabel Badun's mother. This makes them half siblings.
Oh and Jonas, Morganna's son, is Urusla's nephew and the cousin of the sea witches.
Eddie Balthazar is the son of Sarah Dear and Edgar Balthazar. This makes him Jim Jr's first cousin once removed.
Tritons and Urusla and Morganna are siblings.

Headcanon: I have sooo many, so I'd just say that: Milton Keynes is the dad of Brexit and Princey, Turnov sleeps with only his underwear and a "Gay Propaganda" T-shirt on, Weltshaft is Ruhrgold's uncle, Nintendo (Yamamoto) is a female engine (and a gamer, duh!), and Espresso and BoBo used to be longtime rivals before eventually falling in love.
Unpopular Opinion: The Japanese engine needs to be played by more Asian actors, CoCo is too much bossy and her inspiration from Coco Chanel is highly controversial, and the British engine needs more personality.
