Greetings fellow wizard fucker👋 I am very glad to find someone else who appreciates mr. Magic man! I would also like to request some headcanons of wizard and a shy farmer, please! Cause I would much rather hang out in a tower doing spells rather than overwhelm myself trying to befriend an entire town. Thank you!

aw shit this is so cute. not as general as the wizard and the (shy) farmer chilling but more specific as to how they got into a relationship mwah. lowkey based on the romanceable rasmodius mod and always @iniro's wizard portrait mod. quite long so you can check it out under the cut!

the first time you met him, there was a sort of relaxing feeling to his place. sure, cold stone walls and all that wizard jazz, but he wasn't pushy or too nice or judgemental. he was just... there

you liked that feeling. he didn't expect anything from you and you didn't expect anything from him. and he was rather good at ending conversations without making you feel awkward.

making friends with the townsfolk is cool but it's weird making friends with them just one at a time— you couldn't handle that. you had to choose.

the first time you visit the wizard for no reason in particular is a rainy, rainy day. lightning lights up the dark clouds and the thunderclaps are so loud it threatens to tear the sky apart.

you wanted to show the wizard some things you had found in the mines. a tiny, warm orb of swirling golden light, and a tiny, icy ball of pitch black ink. and you made sure to leave before it rained but by the time you stood at his doorstep, you were already soaked to the bone.

you hesitate a little— it was always like this at the start— and then knock firmly. once, then twice.

he is shocked to see you standing there, dripling wet at his doorstep. but he ushers you in after a slightly suspicious squint, and when he offers you tea and you hold the little orbs out to him as if sharing marbles, he is so, so, surprised.

he shows you what the orbs do, teaches you little snippets of magic, and then it carries on like so. it becomes a routine, a steady habit you didn't wan't to break.

he eventually tells you to call him by his name. magnus, you say, letting it roll off your tongue, practicing it. magnus, magnus, magnus. i like your name.

his amused smile helps you say with more certainty.

you didn't really want to go to the flower dance. you had no one to dance with and you had chores to do. but attending community gatherings is the first step to forging friendships, isn't it?

your hellos are weak and half-hearted. you finally crack— you don't want to be here ans you're desperately looking for a way out without getting spotted (bridge? pierre. river? willy, pam, leah, and elliott.)

eyeing a crack through the fences, you duck and slip past it, pushung past thick brambles and sidling past trees ubtil you reach what appears to be a steep sort of natural staircase. you climb it and, much to your surprise, you see a familiar face.

you aren't supposed to be up here, the wizard tells you. neither are you, you reply.

did you ask anyone to dance?

laughing, you say, no, i don't think any of them would like to dance with me.

funnily enough, he smiles back (though with a different sort of emotion, you couldn't quite tell which) and says, you could be wrong. you could be a very good dance partner for all you know.

oh, then, would you like to dance with me? you rib, grinning at him now.

the expression on his face shifts and it becomes unreadable. you're hardly surprised when he says, i wouldn't know the steps.

it is his polite way of rejecting you. you're quite sure of that. smiling, you tell him, well, i wouldn't know them either.

sometimes, you just watch him while he works on enchantments and spells. it's nice, watching him work on his craft while you read about firemaking, something you've been working on for a while. you've made a few crops bloom early and even grew a fruit out of season, but you've never tried making fire, something made of raw emotion and passion and magic.

you need to let the energy burst from you, magnus says. then, you need to pull it back in just so. he sounds like a broken radio at this point, always repeating it.

like a lighter? you ask, as if you haven't asked it a thousand times before.

yes, just like that.

you try every emotion. you try when you're happy, when you're sad, when you're angry, when you're not feeling a single thing at all, and when you can feel every damned feeling in the world. it doesn't work.

my hand is broken, you grumble, clutching your cup of tea so fiercely your knuckles are white. or it could be my feelings. probably my feelings.

don't be silly. your hand can't possibly be broken, magnus scoffs, taking the seat across you and picking up his own cup of tea.

incredulously, you ask, you think my feelings are broken? seriously?

magnus shrugs. yes, maybe, i don't know. put down your tea cup and give me your hand.

you oblige and lean across the table, outstretching your arm. he takes your hand in his (you've always admired his hands, rather large and long-fingered but still elegant. you imagined them to be soft... you didn't think you'd be right.) and you're taken aback at the sudden flare of emotion rushing through you. not one you've never known, but one you didn't quite expect.

he flips your hand over and his thumb presses into your palm. he is so, so, so focused on your hand (is that dirt under your nails?) that he fails to see you struggling not to blush

he tells you to flatten your hand, as flat as it can go, then he says something surprising.

how about you try and think of someone you hate? think of burning their face into ash. his face colors a little but his smile is razor sharp. that's how i first did it.

you laugh at that, startled, then you realize he's being serious. you try, trying to see your ex's face hovering over your palm being burnt to a crisp. you try and try and try until you're blue in the face.

it's not working, you tell him angrily.

a pensive look falls across his face. magnus has a tendency to stick out his lower lip as if he was pouting when he thinks. you feel your anger ebbing away at the silly face he's making. your heart pounds harder than ever and you can hardly look at him, your cheeks flushing.

he is still holding onto your hand when a fire bursts into life, white hot. it cools to a pale shade of blue, flickering like a kitchen flame. it is as hot as the summer sun on your shoulders, so hot it could burn.

magnus yelps. so do you, and the fire dies. your hand is unmarred but, clearly, at magnus' hisses of pain, you've singed his fingers.

i'm sorry, i didn't mean to! you cry out, a worried look on your face. to your utter shock, he smiles.

what did you think of? he asks, a pleased smile on his lips. your flame was as blue as spirit fire.

i- i- i didn't think of anything, really. i'm not sure, you stutter out, avoiding his eyes. fuck. you're screwed. he's always been good at seeing lies and he didn't like any kind of them.

his frown tells you that he didn't not believe your weak excuse.

you avoid magnus for a while. you break your comforting routine and you thrust yourself into making friends with people in town. it helps just a little, lifting your spirits. one day, in the forest, you see leah asking for your help-- she wants to reach a fruit on a tree. you never looked in the direction of magnus' tower anymore. you hesitate for a moment, then you help leah, your gaze anywhere but on the tower.

try as you might, your gaze is on the tower. how could it not be, when what you are drawn to is its sharp little roof and the large telescope sticking out of it, and the ivy creeping up and down its stone brick walls? how could you not be drawn to it when it was a place you could almost call home?

i shouldn't be prying, leah says all of a sudden once you've let her down and you turn to walk away. but you used to visit the tower's occupant, didn't you? i just always saw you walking back and forth.

you stare at her for a moment, and then two. yes, i did, you finally reply. i'll visit soon. just... not now.

you are far too confused to go back. not yet. did you really like magnus that way? or was it a fluke, just a lonely, touch-starved person reaching for a body to hold on to, friendships be damned? you didn't want to fuck this up. you haven't made a proper fire in a week. you miss the surge of energy, of power, of emotion. you miss him.

pierre has taken to selling bouquets. bright, colorful flowers. they're for a special someone, he says to you when he catches you looking at them curiously. for heartfelt confessions, if i couldn't be any plainer.

you buy one and keep it in your house, in a vase with water to keep it alive. you wonder if it is worth the risk. you can see the tower's roof from the second floor of your house. you settle in with the bouquet at your right hand and a cup of tea in the left.

it has been an entire two weeks since you've last seen him. in fairness, it is nearing the end of fall and most of your heavy rumination has been during your farm chores as you work to keep in pace with your harvest to prepare for the incoming winter season.

you decide to tell him that you like him romantically. and if he doesn't care for you in that way, you will try and salvage your friendship to the best of your abilities. it is a foolhardy plan, as magnus would put it, but it is the best plan you have.

the last autumn rain is slowly falling and you pick up the pace, not wanting to get the bouquet dripping wet. your bag hangs at your side, filled to the brim with glittering balls of light and darkness.

when you finally stand at his dooratep, lightning lights up the dark clouds and the thunderclaps are so loud it threatens to tear the sky apart. you are soaked to the bone, but you have heated up your hand just enough to dry your clothes at a pat and touch.

you hesitate a little— just like at the start— and then knock firmly. once, then twice.

the door swings open and the surprise on magnus' face would have been comedic, if it were not for the circumstances. he stares at you, lamely carrying a bouquet upside down, dripping wet.

can i come in? you ask, surprised at the unwavering tone of your voice. unless you're busy. then i'll go.

magnus nods mutely (you're confused for a second there, and he steps aside to let you in before locking the door behind you. for a moment, you two just stand there silently, drowning in the awkward silence. then, he breaks it just as you do.

let me get some tea for you, you're dripping water on my floor, you might get sick—

i brought something for you, you weren't actually doing—

for a moment, everything is back as it was and you laugh and he chuckles at the predicament. then, you try and stomp off as much water as possible right at his door. you keep drying yourself with your heated hand and you remove your shoes and socks, marveling at the warmth of the floor. magnus disappeared to make tea— you follow after him, careful not to ruin the bouquet.

so, why are you here? he asks, his tone careful, once you seat yourself at his tea table. you've been gone a while. busy with the fall harvest?

yes, i was busy. but i was also avoiding you, you tell him honestly, and you can see him stiffen at that.

why? did i do something?

no, i did. i was confused and scared... i didn't want to lose my only friend, you know. it wasn't right for me to just up and leave for 2 weeks, though, i'm sorry.

he sits across you and hands you your cup of hot, steaming tea. what did you do?

i acted like a fool, you say, taking a sip to warm yourself. you feel your confidence waning. you have never been so straightforward in your life— what on earth is wrong with you? so you see, magnus, this is for you. you jerk your head in the direction of the bouquet on its side, flowers a little limp and raindrops on its many bright petals.

he looks confused. confused but appreciative. er, thank you for the bouquet. it's lovely. and he leaves it at that.

you stare at him, bewildered. then, you start to laugh. you... you don't know what it means, then? you move your tea cup of the saucer and you rip your bag open, fumbling for the balls of solar and void essence.

no, i'm afraid i don't, he replies, starting to sound a little annoyed and exasperated. care to enlighten me?

you put the solar and void essence on the saucer and push it towards him. you smile a little mournfully at the sudden surprise on his face and say, it means i like you, magnus. romantically.

the room falls silent. he looks up at you and you can hear him thinking and you can see the flush on his face as he stammers out a response, but you shake your head, i was thinking we could still be friends if you didn't like me back. but that’s not fair for either of us, is it? you’re right and you know it, but that doesn’t mean you don’t feel the hot shame prickling under your skin.

you turn to leave. i’m really sorry about this. i’m so sorry i had to ruin it.

no, no, don’t go. i didn’t know what the bouquet meant, really, i didn’t. i’m glad you were honest with me. look, i didn’t say i didn’t like you back that way. don’t go. please? he says all this in a rush and you freeze, trying to comprehend what he just said.

you... like me back? you ask, your voice suddenly meek.

i haven’t ‘liked’ anyone since i was a teenager, magnus says, mirth in his voice. but, yes, it could be just that.

a hand clasps your wrist and you turn around to look at him, his eyes shining with warmth and his cheeks a soft pink. are you still going? he asks, his brows knotting. you know he’s referring to the storm.

no. no, i think i can stay, you tell him, and you take your seat once more. to your utter surprise an amusement, you hear the scrape of his chair and find him sitting next instead of across you this time.

making friends becomes easier during the winter. you don’t have much to do, really, and so you split your time between the mines, fishing, the pub, and the tower.

10. Do you enjoy writing dialogue, exposition, or plot the most?

Ans: My top 2 are dialogue and exposition. Plot I make up as I go, even though I have a plan, which then explodes into a Skywalker-Tano-Kanobi plan. Most of the dialogue I come up comes from other sources, or other media. Some pieces of dialogue I put in are nods to other films or TV series, video games even. Exposition becomes an all-you-can-eat buffet, I have some good moments with it other times crappy. I try to keep a balance of dialogue and exposition, but some scenarios call for more dialogue focus or vice-versa. XD

17. What fic are you most proud of?

Ans: Oh, you really want to test the waters there, do you? XD

The works I'm most proud of? Gonna have to twist it a little, since it's a series rather one specific fic. My favourite would be my Galaxy-38 series - AKA: There Will Be No Hero in the End, Who Will Rise Above and COIG (Crisis on Infinite Galaxies). G38 I'm most proud for because, I simply tossed a cosmic sized thermo detonator and blew it all up. Might have scarred some readers that I turned Ahsoka into an irredeemable monster who sees herself as a God.

COIG is essentially, one giant soup of chaos. With the theory of Multiverse and tying it into the concept of the behaviour of the World Between Worlds... Filoni, your new lore was screaming to be abused XD

19. Who is the easiest/hardest character for you to write about? Why?

Ans: Oof. I'm gonna have to take multiple fronts on this. Easiest character to write: Ahsoka Tano, followed by Anakin Skywalker and Kenobi, along with Amidala. They're essentially a bunch of disasters, very easy to characterise whilst fleshing them out more. Also an excuse to add some personal headcanons. The Clones such as Rex and Clone OCs are easy to write.

Besides, when I need in-depth info, Wookieepedia is a great help, especially since I mix Legends with canon.

The hardest. Without a doubt, the one character in all of Star Wars is Mitth'raw'nuruodo - "But you can call me Thrawn". To be honest, he is one of most complex characters added in the SW mythos. Cold, calculating, cunning, one of the Empire's greatest Admiral and combat strategist. His ability to turn a losing battle in his favour is incomparable and his ruthless cunning allowed him to work the complex ladder of Imperial hierarchy in a xenophobic galaxy.

One can say I fear writing him. I'm not lying, I do fear writing him. Thrawn is a complex character, no amount of reading material will help me prepare to give him page time in my fics. Hence, my safest option is to make nods/mentions to the Grand Admiral of the Chimera. That doesn't mean I hold a lot of respect for Thrawn, I do. I just don't have enough confidence to write his character into my stories.

The Bridge Trope in Star Wars and what it may mean for IX

Besides being iconic markers in our daily lives, bridges are an awesome symbol:

transition and a boundary between sky and earth, life and death, real and imaginary, mortal and immortal, good and evil, civilization and the wilderness,rich and poor, old and new

marking both a connection and a separation through time and space, between people, between places

Which is why, they are so easily used in stories as a decisive step in a hero’s journey, the Rubicon moment, the ultimate test, when through wit, trick, or strength, a bridgekeeper must be defeated. Let’s say it is a hero’s journey and fairy tale classic.

Add to that the fact that bridges are quite the war movie cliché, they are obvious landmarks to destroy, and vital targets to control. Destroying a bridge often means isolating and weakening the enemy, depriving it from communication and food, water, or medical supplies.

So, of course, we get to meet the bridge trope again and again in Star Wars. And, more often than not, the bridges we get are bridges of Death. From the Phantom Menace’s Duel of the Fates

To Han’s death in The Force Awakens.

It is actually fitting to say that both scenes constitute an interesting framing for the Skywalker saga. Duel of the Fates is a very apt name for the beginning of the saga. Remember that Anakin’s name is etymologically “Ananke”, that is to say Fate, Destiny. Anakin’s fate is in the balance there, and the end result of who gets to become his Master and teaching him about the Force is key. Had Qui Gon lived, possibly, there would not have been any Vader. As for, Han’s death in TFA, the constant play of words between sun and son, and the not so subtle imagery of light and darkness, is supposedly all about Kylo’s fate. If Qui Gon’s death is possibly the first step towards the fate that will turn sweet lovable Anakin munchkin into big bad Vader, Han’s death is the counterpart of this scene, thus the first step towards big bad Kylo turning eventually into lovable Ben Solo. And just as it took three movies to realize the Fate of Anakin, it will take three movies to realize the Fate of Ben Solo. But I digress. Or not.

Because both stories, which interact like mirror images of each other, are perfectly hinged around two other crucial bridge scenes. One in ESB. And one in ROTJ. You know what I’m talking about, right?

And these two are also counterparts. ESB’s bridge scene is Luke’s symbolic death scene: learning the truth about his father, and losing his hand, he would rather choose death and commit suicide. ROTJ’s bridge scene is Vader’s death and Anakin’s redemption, with Luke accepting the truth, Vader losing a hand, and choosing to save his son’s life. Even the placement of the actors emphasize this idea of mirror image. So Luke gets his Troll Bridge twice: he fails the test the first one, falling to the chasm and falling apart, and succeeds the second time around. Doing what? Throwing away his saber. Choosing love. Refusing to kill.

But I would also like to stress out that, from a certain point of view, Luke is not the only one who gets tested there on the Troll Bridge. Anakin, just like his son, also fails the first test and passes the second. In ESB, he has little to no love to offer and tempt Luke to his side: he offers the vague promises of the power of the dark side and ruling the galaxy together (which didn’t work with Padmé either). In effect, he is selfish, abusive, scarring his son physically and psychologically, and does not seem too distressed when Luke lets go and falls “presumably” to his death. In ROTJ, he chooses the losing side, standing against the Emperor to save his son’s life, which he knows, will eventually cost him his life. Thus, he is showing empathy and remorse, and saves Luke through a selfless act of love.

Yep, that is what the OT is about.

And, arguably, these two scenes constitute the very axis around which the other two trilogies are built. Hence my first “digression”.

It is also very interesting to note that in the four cases exemplified so far, the “bridges” in question are seemingly “reactor cores”, excuse my tech ignorance. These scenes are never about bridges out in the open, over a river, connecting two shores. They are always played out over a chasm, surrounded with energy fields, in dark environments with a possible fall into a bottomless abyss... Two possible interpretations:

because they are battle of the brains, moral battle of good versus evil within oneself. Inner battles. Think grey cells, cerebellum connections, as a map for these duels.

because they are battle of the heart. Issues of love. “core”

Honestly, I think they both go together!

Symbolically, they are your typical “choose the right path” bridges, the life and death, good vs evil bridges.

The many bridges of Luke

If you actually consider the OT, Luke’s journey is very much rhythmed by a series of bridges. Which might seem ironic for a boy coming from a desert planet with no water, and thus, no use or concept for bridges (besides rocky arch formation such as we see during the pod race in PM). But consider the last name GL decided to give him: SKYWALKER. That was not the orginial name he had chosen, right, since in first drafts Luke was called “Starkiller”. Consider then what a huge difference it makes when you move from a very martial moniker “Star/killer”, which is all about destroying life and light (and Luke actually comes from “light” etymologically speaking) to choose something that means: the one that walks the skies. Not flies. WALKS. And if you walk the skies, chances are you are walking on a bridge of some kind (like mythological rainbow bridges). Crossing a bridge is very much akin to walking the sky: you are suspended between heaven and earth. So even the name GL chose for his star family is all about “walking” on bridges.

The “bridge” moment in ANH is rather brief, but quite interesting. It is actually the “NO BRIDGE” moment, the one when Luke and the Princess find themselves locked out with no crossing, and stormtroopers shooting at them. This moment:

What does it reveal about Luke? His ingenuity, since he uses his farmboy utility belt to cross the bridge, but then also his instincts, the fact that he can rely on his roots (what he learned as a farmboy), his audacity, his ability to take a leap of faith (something that will play out later in his relationship with his father). But it also sets him apart as a different kind of hero. The NOT MY LUKE people should really pay attention to these details. Sure, he plays the hero, saves the damsel and everything, but in this scene they work together, she also gets to protect them, he trusts her with defending them, she is the one giving him a kiss for luck. This is very positive masculinity. Heroic, but not pushy. Manly, but respectful of women. Physical but also using his brain. Luke is such a dear.

In ESB, the big bridge moment is the one I already referred to. The moment of truth. Having these two characters on a bridge is very clever of course. It’s all about meeting in the middle. A bridge is by essence a balancing act. Can they meet halfway or will they cut all connections? Can opposites reconcile? Will they connect/reconnect? What better way to talk about human emotion and love than put them on a bridge, the very metaphor for communication, leap of faith, and the possible danger of reaching out to the other with your feelings?

But ROTJ goes even further with the bridge metaphor. Going with this when Luke reveals the truth to Leia...

To carry on with Leia and Han, where Han shows more of his emotions ans proves how supportive and selfless he can be when he is just there to comfort her in the end, putting away his jealousy and self-doubts:

Followed with this, for Luke and Vader’s first meeting since ESB when Luke calls him “father” for the first time and tries to bring him back:

To conclude with the bridge sequence already mentioned when Vader chooses to be Anakin all over again.

WOW.

And where does it all take Luke? To a water planet with NO bridges. Seriously. When VII opens, Luke has chosen to sever, metaphorically speaking, all the links to others. As if he had chosen to destroy every bridge that could connect him to Leia and the rest of the world. And when we see him going about the island, there are no bridges. He jumps from one cliff to the other. Interesting thing is on The Art of The Last Jedi you get to see some of the art concepts that they had for Ahch-To that included a lot of variation on bridges:

But eventually they went for the very design that removed any bridge from the place that Luke has chosen to spend the remaining days of his life until his death. Which is, I must say, a very good choice. He disconnected himself from the Force, he disconnected from people he loved not telling them where he hid, it made absolutely no sense to put him on a place that was covered with bridges. The bridges were meant to be burned.

That is... until one very last moment. Which is the perfect segway into my next chapter... Until the end. When he projects himself for one final face-off with his nephew. And that is a big bridge metaphor about reaching out across the stars. And we know that when Luke is on a bridge with someone he loves, this doesn’t mean harm or spite or revenge. Or even fighting. Bridges in SW are not so much about fancy duels as they are about love. Yep, even in PM. There is the love that Obi-Wan (yes, even a Jedi) feels for his master, and the need to extend and take care of a little boy that is all alone in this galaxy. A leap of faith. Love. Which means...

The ST is about crossing that bridge

Yes, there are bridges in the ST. And how Kylo and Rey are going to be able to cross over and meet each other. Let me explain. This happens at the end of VII:

Visually, it tells us that there seems to be no possible bridge between the two characters. Yet, the whole point is that they keep on looking towards each other. The bridge,aka the connection, is their eyes (mirrors of the soul yadiyada). And sure enough, comes VIII, and the bridge is there. WTF, will you say? What bridge are you raving about. Well... that one...

The Force bond.

And how do I presume calling this a bridge? Because...

It was I who bridged your minds

Interesting choice of words. But there it is. Put it as plainly and simply as you possibly can. The Force bond is a bridge, a spiritual bridge between Kylo and Rey. That’s quite something, right?

Which means that, there may be some physical crossing of some kind in IX. Now, I don’t want to be presumptuous and declare for sure, but it would seem like a logical concept. And on Vic Mahoney’s moodboard...on the left, some of the pictures seem very bridgelike...

And that’s also where I want to bring in that clever little TV kid show called Star Wars Rebels.

Take it to the Bridge

So Star Wars Rebels came before the release of TFA, in 2014, merely two years after Disney bought LF and therefore all the rights to Star Wars. Let’s look at what they did there and let’s wonder why. I don’t think that it was a random move on their part. They could, after all, have imagined something that took place right before TFA, or come up with the many adventures of Luke and the gang, or even spend more time on the Clone Wars, or go way back in the Old Republic. But no 14 years after ROTS, 5 years before ANH, is the time they chose. And came up with a totally new gang we had never heard of. Except that... well... the new gang got to meet A LOT of familiar faces. From all over the place: Hondo, Rex, Ahsoka, Vader, Leia, Mon Mothma, Bail Organa, Obi-Wan, Darth Maul, Yoda, Lando, C3P0 and R2, Palpatine, just to name a few... The point is that they get to meet people from the PT AND people from the OT. Thus (you know where this is going) bridging story lines. And, surprise surprise, what special name did they choose for their hero? Ezra Bridger. Gosh, that’s not even subtle, there. And by the way, what does Ezra mean? Helper. So Ezra helps bridging... aka, Star Wars Rebels helps bridging, connecting, if you will storylines. Towards a logical conclusion. And what is this conclusion, pray? The ST of course. And who stands on the bridge? Kylo and Rey.

Even better, what particular storyline did they preciously choose to keep to conclude this new Star Wars story:

the return of the Mortis Arc, balance

the World between worlds, and its very specific bridges that cross through time and space, and the possibility to alter the past/future, plus bringing back loved ones

looking for knowledge (last time I checked it was not so much about knowledge in the PT and OT). But Ezra’s story is all about knowledge.

love and sacrifice, saving the people you love (Ahsoka, Kanan, Ezra), and, come on, Hera and Kanan’s baby (by the way, Kanan is very reminiscent of Canaan, the Promised Land, so keep the prophetic aspect in mind)

Again, how will it play out in IX? I have some ideas but I really can’t tell whether it will show up or not. There have been rumors about an artifact (very SW Rebels) that would require both Kylo and Rey’s powers. So knowledge. So possibly with notions of Mortis implied in there (balance). Love, sacrifice, we have discussed a lot. Remain the bridges. I can totally envision an important scene taking place on a bridge, with Kylo and Rey embracing, or running to each other, or holding hands while everything else around them crumbles. I can also imagine a bridge playing out with an intimate scene as we got in ROTJ in the Ewok village, something akin to the terrace where Anakin and Padmé first kiss on Naboo and finally get married. Again, the film has already been shot. So too late for that already and there’s a fat chance that it won’t even happen. But since we got a bridge of death in VII with Han’s death, we need a bridge of light.

Which might just turn out to be the symbolic bridge of Rey and Kylo coming together and finally uniting the light and the dark sides...

The Family Look [1/2]

Steaminess will return tomorrow or the day after (as this fic will have 2 parts), I promise (and thank you to those who sent prompts for that!), but today I thought I’d work on more of a family fic (partially because I saw an old pic of my aunt with the most fabulous 60s glasses and couldn’t let it go).

“Don’t you ever look like your Mummy!”

It was such a simple, commonplace phrase. Shelagh had heard it hundreds of times, and likely said it about as often, given her line of work. Yet now she heard in it a myriad of subtexts and assumptions that she never would have assumed before her marriage; before she and Patrick had adopted the little girl they were blessed to be able to call their daughter.

—[ 3 days earlier ]—

How much allspice is the proper amount? Lucille had loaned her an old family recipe for a dish called ‘jerk chicken’ which her mother had mailed over and Lucille had made for luncheon at Nonnatus last week. Though Lucille had helpfully pointed out the difference between British allspice and Jamaican allspice, as with any family recipe, the measurements were vague, maintained by the current cook having cooked alongside the writer of said recipe. Shelagh supposed she could just add to her taste and then further adjust it based on her family’s reviews.

As though thinking of them had summoned them, Shelagh heard the click of the door that signalled that Patrick and Angela must be home.

“Hello dears!” She called out, correctly assuming they would come to her.

However, she hadn’t guessed the tears that would accompany her daughter’s greeting. Instead of her normal cheerful hello, Angela had simply run over and hugged her mother’s leg.

She immediately bent down to enfold her daughter in her arms. “Sweetheart, what ever is the matter?”

Angela simply shook her head and buried it in the crook of her mother’s neck.

Shelagh hear the crack of Patrick’s knees as he bent down to rub his daughter’s back and explain the situation.

“Apparently Miss Lang asked her to read from the board, and that was something of a tricky request.” He paused to see if Angela would elaborate further.

Comforted enough to have regained her vocabulary, she did. “The words were all fuzzy and I tried but…” the tears were starting to well up once more. “I guessed wrong and then everybody laughed.”

Shelagh met Patrick’s eyes over Angela’s head as she pressed her face back into her mother’s shoulder. To her surprise, he looked confused about the incident, though naturally also frustrated and sad about the reaction of the other children.

But of course he would be, he was looking at the situation through different eyes. Angela had been a wonderful reader, quickly progressing whenever her parents asked her to read the next bit of her bedtime story. Thinking back on that, Shelagh did remember Angela looking very closely at the pages, and kicked herself for not realizing the problem sooner.

Yet at the same time, Angela’s story rewound time for her, to almost thirty years beforehand when another little girl had cried over her inability to read the chalkboard.

She sat in the bricht licht i’ the humble East Window i’ St. Andrew’s, the queart of the kirk always a balm tae her hairt. Ma and Da had tried, but they didnae ken any better than the teacher why she warslt sair wi the reading. It wis anely in class; on Sundays she could read the hymns jis fine.

A saft vice interrupted her thoughts.

“I’m aye sorrowed tae hear greeting on sic a lovely afterneen.” Sister Catherine settled herself beside her.

Shelagh wiped her tears an keeked up at her douche, bespectacled face, an it aa cam pouring oot.

“Everyone’s lauchin at me an Mr Wilson’s getting feejee kis Ah cannea read in skail.”

Instead i’ the worrit look Ma and Da had gien her, Sister Catherine seemed tae un’erstn an she felt a wecht lift fae her hairt.

The auld nun took aff her glesses an placed tham on the bridge i’ her neb. Suddenly the Sister’s face became clear tae her. She luikit aroon an fand the kirk transformed.

Yon same afterneen, her mither teen her tae see the ee doctor. The neist day, naething cwid bring her doon, even fin the ithers caad her a wee owl. The wardle wis a newly magical placie tae her noo, an she wis fair-tricket wi it.

Mimicking Sister Catherine’s actions all those years ago, Shelagh took off her specs and gently pulled her daughter back from her so she could set them on Angela’s face. Alarmed by this development, Angela abruptly stopped crying, and Patrick’s confusion turned to comprehension.

“Darling, could you try reading what the tin on the counter says?” Shelagh knew her glasses were probably a lot stronger than the ones Angela would need, but if this was indeed her problem, they would at least be of some help.

Angela hopped in excitement as her world changed just as Shelagh’s had when she’d been of a similar age.

“All spice!” She exclaimed, “All spice all spice!”

She took off to the living room to further explore her newfound abilities, alarming her little brother out his concentration on what appeared to be a game somehow involving a doctor and a fire truck.

“Magnavox!” She shouted. “The… Lanket!”

“Lancet!” Tim corrected from upstairs, where he was sequestered with his books.

Shelagh and Patrick laughed and turned back to the neglected dinner preparations.

“Would you like to take her to the optometrist tomorrow or shall I?” He asked, wrapping his arms around her.

“Hmm let me write Miss Lang a note explaining why she ought to be excused from reading tomorrow and then I’ll take her after school. Choosing your own glasses is such a big moment…” Patrick placed a kiss over the temples of her own specs, and she knew he was remembering when she’d changed her old round frames for the new horn-rimmed ones he loved so much. “Indeed it is.”

“These!” Angela announced confidently as she tried on what must have been the fiftieth pair of glasses that day. Shelagh and Dr. Adams exchanged a look of amused relief.

“That’s a lovely choice, darling.” The pair in question sported a warm amber cat-eye frame with three little rhinestones in each upswept corner. Predictably, they looked absolutely darling on Angela.

“You look just like your Mummy!” Dr. Adams agreed, and Shelagh felt a warm glow of pride settle in her chest.

The rest of the transaction proceeded swiftly, and Angela practically dragged her mother home so she could show off her new glasses to Daddy and Tim, both of whom were suitably admiring.

Unfortunately, the next day did not go as smoothly. Once again, Patrick came home with a teary Angela, but this time his face was like a thunderclap. She didn’t have to ask.

“The other children must have said something truly cruel, and I’ll be having a word with their parents about it.” Patrick said angrily.

Shelagh nodded in assent, but bent down to speak to her little girl. “What did they say sweetheart?”

Angela shook her head, unable or unwilling to speak.

“I’ll make you some nice cocoa, and then you, Daddy and I can talk about it. How does that sound?”

Angela agreed, looking a smidge more at ease, and Shelagh set of to prepare hot beverages for the family, making extra cocoa in a spare cozy-clad teapot to set aside for Tim and Teddy when they eventually came in from Teddy’s makeshift cricket lesson in the back yard.

A sufficient quantity of hot cocoa ingested, Angela explained what had so upset her. “Claire said my glasses were pretty, and that I looked like you, Mummy, but Doris said that I was just pretending, that I couldn’t look like you because… because you’re not my real mummy.” Her tears were flowing freely once more. “And Charlotte and Anne agreed.” She concluded, before the floodgates opened in earnest.

Shelagh and Patrick both wrapped her in their arms, silently communicating sharing a look of knowing distress overtop of her small head. They had been open with her about her adoption for as long as she could understand it, both feeling it was important that it not be a shock to her, and knowing that if they didn’t tell hear early on, she was likely to hear it from a third party. Yet neither of them were naive enough to believed they had headed off all future challenges.

“Darling, it’s absolutely not pretend.” Shelagh spoke gently but firmly. “You’re my real daughter, so I’m your real mummy, and Daddy’s your real daddy.”

Patrick kissed the neat part in her hair to emphasize the point. “You remember how you grew in another lady’s tummy, like Teddy grew in Mummy’s?” He asked. Angela sniffled in acknowledgement, remembering this conversation. “Well some people don’t understand that even though you came from another lady and man, you’re our little girl.”

“But then why did Teddy come from you and Mummy?” Angela asked quietly, still shaken.

“Because sometimes different people in a family come from different places.” Shelagh explained. “But what truly makes them all a family - what makes us a family - is that we love each other, not whether or not we look like each other.”

“And if we do happen to look like each other,” Patrick added, Angela quickly interrupting to add detail, “like how my hair and glasses are like Mummy but my eyes are the same colour as yours and Timmy’s?”

“Exactly,” Patrick agreed. “And that’s just chance. Your looks are a gift from the man and lady who made you, and even if you had turned out to look nothing like us, you know we would love you just as much, don’t you?”

“Mmhhm.” A small smile broke through Angela’s tears as she agreed.

Shelagh felt the need to add one further clarification. “There are ways you’re like me and Daddy that aren’t chance; that are because you’re our daughter.” Angela turned her big, curious eyes to her mother.

“Like right now,” Shelagh said. “That wee expression, and the way you tilt your head, it’s just like Daddy when he’s confused.”

Patrick grinned. “And when Teddy or Timmy are naughty, or when something needs to be done, your voice and posture - that’s the way you stand - is just like Mummy.”

Angela was practically beaming now, her worries assuaged for the day as pulled her parents closer for another hug.

My sincere apologies if the Doric is terrible. I used a site that had an extensive dictionary and translation tool, but it may be Google Translate quality. I wanted to get across my headcanon that Shelagh grew up speaking Doric, so her memories of her childhood could also be in Doric (as I find when I remember events that happened in French, my memory of the whole event, including descriptions is in French). If anyone speaks Doric and notes anything wrong with my translation, please tell me!

That same afternoon, her mother took her to see the eye doctor. The next day, nothing could bring her down, even when the others called her a little owl. The world was a newly magical place to her now, and she was delighted with it.]

Patoranger v. Lupinranger Story and Character Predictions

I know, I know, Dukemon has been posting a lot of rumours online and I’ve been dropping the ball. I’ve had a really hectic semester this year and I’ve been absolutely drained. I promise that tomorrow night, I will post my thoughts on the most recent rumour Dukemon has posted at that time.

Tonight, however, I want to do something that I’m a little overdue on. Just like last year, I am going to put forth my own personal ideas of what I would like to see the team makeup be for each of the two teams we are getting next year. Now keep in mind, these are simply my predictions, they are not rumors and I have no reason to believe they will actually come true. If you feel like seeing what essentially boils down to my fanfiction idea however, read on. Please let me know what you think through reblogs or comments!

Story: There is a new hot commodity on the streets: ancient relics from a long extinct civilization. Discovered and distributed by a virtually unknown criminal organization, these black market items can only be afforded by the uber-rich, and for good reason. Anyone who possesses one of these relics can summon a small army of monstrous foot-soldiers and can turn into a monster themselves. Armed with this immense power, these Relic Holders have been causing chaos, with the police next to useless in stopping them.

Knowing that a response is needed, the legendary head of Interpol, code-named Mr. Apollo, has organized an elite squad of genetically enhanced police officers to fight back against the Relic Holders and discover the truth behind who has been distributing the relics. Armed with the latest in armour and weaponry, they are the Keisatsu Sentai Patoranger!

But things are not as simple as that. Mr. Apollo’s sister, the eccentric billionaire known only as Miss Artemis, who has always been fast and loose with the law ans competitive with her brother, sees the Patos as nothing more than a band-aid on a bullet wound. Fighting the Relic Holders on the streets will only make the violence worse. The only real way to solve this little Relic problem is to steal the Relics from under the noses of their Holders. However, since the Relic Holders are smart enough to keep their identities secret and smart enough to turn their mansions into virtual fortresses, ordinary methods will not suffice. To that end, Miss Artemis has gathered her own team of genetically modified phantom thieves to steal the Relics and expose the Relic Holders to the public. Arming them with technology... “inspired” by that of her brother’s team, she serves as the commander of the Kaitou Sentai Lupinranger!

Team Makeup: Ignoring all previous rumours so far, the teams I envisioned from the beginning are two teams of three, with an equal number of male and female members between the two. The Patos will all have “physical” superpowers that enhance their abilities, while the Lupins will have more flashy “mental” abilities. Also, while I sincerely hope that the actual teams will have vehicles for Pato and animals for Lupin, I imagined a mixed motif similar to Ninninger (I know, I know, but I liked the idea of it), with each team having a humanoid mecha, a vehicle, and an animal.

Patoranger:

PatoRed: A rookie cop fresh from the academy, no one was more surprised than him when he was selected to lead Patoranger. He may have top grades, but his inexperience makes him wonder if Apollo had an ulterior motive in choosing him. In spite of this, he is smart, strong, and always willing to push himself to do his best and live up to his title.

Power: Super Strength

Weapon: A riot shield

Personal Mech: A humanoid robot with megabusters for arms. Forms the torso and head of the megazord: the legs fold up onto the back, forming the megazord’s chest, and the arms fold up onto the mech’s chest, acting as a jetpack for the megazord.

PatoBlue: A celebrated super cop, and knows it, Blue refers to himself as the best driver in the world. While he has never lost a suspect in a car chase, and seems to be proficient with every vehicle known to man, he is rather infamous for driving recklessly and leaving a trail of destruction in his wake no matter what vehicle he drives, be it a car, a helicopter, or a unicycle.

Power: Super Speed

Weapon: Tonfas

Personal Mech: A high tech police car, which Red’s mech is capable of standing on for transport. Forms the waist and legs of the megazord.

PatoYellow: The lead trainer of the K-9 unit, Yellow loves animals but in truth is an excellent detective in her own right. Even before her enhancements, there was no one better at finding hidden evidence or suspects. There are those on the force that she’s the one who teaches the dogs how to smell. While easily the nicest member of the team, if you hurt her friends or her dogs, she will turn you into a cautionary tale.

Power: Enhanced senses

Weapon: A pair of pistols

Personal Mech: A German shepherd. Splits in half to form the arms of the megazord, with the head serving as the shoulderpads (think like Gingaioh)

Lupinranger:

LupinViolet: The Lupins leader, Violet is considered to be the greatest phantom thief in the world. He is an expert at stalking his mark, meticulously planning his heist, and grandly stealing his target with all the charm and theatricality one expects of a phantom thief. Unfortunately, he’s also extremely clumsy, a fact he is very embarrassed about and denies vehemently. He also fancies himself a ladies man, but despite his good looks and impeccable manners he tends to get rejected a lot, which causes him to sulk for hours on end until his teammates finally cheer him up.

Power: Illusions

Weapon: A pair of long daggers on chains

Personal Mech: A humanoid robot with a crow motif. Forms the entire upper body of the megazord by flipping upside down. The arms become the upper legs, and the legs become the megazord’s arms.

LupinWhite: A high class lady and ojou-sama type, White tends to get whatever she wants which lead her to grow bored of her current lifestyle. Generally cold and emotionless, White became a phantom thief because it was the only way she felt truly alive. Almost a little too good at stealth and infiltration, she dresses in a bright white outfit to add an extra layer of difficulty to her missions. The kind of person who hates being bored, white has a habit of taking unnecessary risks to keep things interesting, much to Violet’s chagrin. She also goes out of her way to antagonize PatoYellow, as her powers render White’s invisibility useless, making her the most fun to fight in White’s eyes.

Power: Invisibility

Weapon: A sniper rifle

Personal Mech: A stealth jet. Forms the right leg of the megazord.

LupinBlack: The youngest member of the team, Black is an incorrigible prankster who loves causing mischief for those around her, especially her fearless leader. She absolutely owns the black cat motif, claiming that her powers are to cause bad luck and using them to cause accidents for her opponents. Despite her mischievous nature, Black loves her teammates and looks up to them like an older brother and sister. If they were ever in trouble, there is nothing she wouldn’t do to rescue them.

Power: Telekinesis

Weapon: Whip

Personal Mech: A black cat. Forms the left leg of the megazord.

I’ll try and tell you as much as i can without rambling on too much! Also I’m not sure what you mean by discord since I’m not on any particular mp100 discord chat but i am on the amino which you should totally join

First, my main oc is Kayoko. She’s the first oc I ever made and is a clairvoyant who specilizes in manipulation over “randomized” chances. ex: choosing the right card from a deck, flipping a book open to the right page, get chosen from raffles etc… you could say she has incredible “luck”. She uses her power to … gamble a lot… She’s not exactly a stand up student by any means and is brutally honest to those around her. Bit of a delinquent as she is rather quick to anger and throw punches. But she is loyal to her friends at the very least.

She’s part of a board games club (named C.A.R.B.S) that includes 4 other people (…technically five but im going by my own canon route) that includes:Mausyo the president: a snobbish stuck up girl who is secretly just an anime nerd who acts like a shitty 90s anime villain Kenta, a well behaved and a slight doormat type whose half british and is terribly homesick. If he left the club, it would all collapse. Hibiki, Kayoko’s best friend who is an obnoxious loud brat that likes biting everything in sight. Constantly fighting something. And finally Rin… the… trainwreck. He’s a really embarrasing over the top wannabe “cool kid” who should have probably died five months ago by the amount of product he sticks on his face.

I have a few other minor kid ocs that include Ben (one of the delinquents ritsu beat up in the alleyway who had a change of heart), Fleurette (my aoyama/Saison Margeurite hybrid rip-off), and Ayama (Hibiki’s older goth sister who goes to Teru’s school).

Next come the adults!

I have two main adult ocs, Noriko and Yuudai. Noriko is a police woman living in seasoning city also with psychic powers. She specialises in barriers and defence. Think about it when Teru inverted his barrier when battling that fire guy. Now that that and expand upon it. She is.. not very good at her job and seems to always experience some sort of extreme emotion. She is ADAMANT about justice, chasing down even the most petty thief for miles and causing massive damage costs in the process… she is reckless to say in the least. Although she seems to cause more damage than good, the police force hasn’t fired her because she’s an excellent baker who brings in food for peoples birthdays and special occasions. She is protective over Kayoko and only wants the best for her, as well as all teens and children. She seems to always go easy on them ei: never throwing them into prison. The reason why? She claims kids just “don’t know what they’re doing”

Next is the asshole himself Yuudai. Now just imagine the most vile sleazy door to door salesmen who also works as an 80s car dealer on the side line, smoking lines of coke between “helping” customers and always feeling the need to express his lewd thoughts when around a woman even in the most slightly revealing outfit yet when he’s doing none of those he’s jerking it to a google image search of the word “boob” because he doesn’t understand how the internet works and when he doesn’t have internet access he’s accessing his collection of 20 year old playboy mags which are probably as crusty as his entire damn face because i don’t think this man even knows what public hygiene is. Also i should add his esper ability it the power to see into the past of a certain location. Ex: he goes into a room with a safe and in his mind he can “rewind” time to a point where he sees someone from a past event unlocking the safe, thus yuudai learns the combo. He cant interact with the past but for sure can see it so he uses this power to do sleazy detective work.

also to everyone’s surprise (or… not-so-surprise depending) he has a young daughter named Junko (i gotta credit @starplatinyaa for co-making her cause shes a joint collab oc. also worth mentioning she also made the “5th” unmentioned member of C.A.R.B.S) whose..oddly enough considering her father, the complete opposite and quite a ray of sunshine?? She also LOVES insects and holds a deep curisoty for the world. also yuudai will never mention this but hes got a soft spot for her

Now onto some other minor adult ocs! heh.. this list is getting long so ill try and keep this short. For other adult ocs I got:

Sal: a creepy psychic lady living out in the forest by her lonesome. She has a morbid ability of soul manipulation ans seems to hate anybody getting near her… think of her as one of those weird slasher villains but with a heavier emphasis on backstory

Verin: a talented cynical mangaka who is fascinated by religion and mythology. He listens to epic power metal 24/7 and has a ton of nordic-themed tattoos all around him. He also finds espers to be ultra interesting and will pester one relentlessly with questions if he finds one.

Gundma: a Claw member whose…a grandma with a gun. she takes no shit but also acts very kind to her division members.Furi: a 45 year old furry Claw member who.. well.. is a furry. He acts cat-like and can produce wolverine-esque claws with his psychic ability. Tsutoneru: she smokes weed… can control temperature… doesnt believe canada exists and also is a Claw member.

Theres also a few ocs i have in the works currently, a group of three idol fans and the singer they love.

Q: What is UnderTale A: UnderTale is an indie video game created by Toby Fox, also known as Radiation (with limited aid from a few others, and Kickstarter backers). It was released in 2015 to extreme acclaim, “an RPG where no one has to die,” it takes a look at general video game tropes, and in doing so, has you think about your own morals, both in game and in the real world. If you needed to read this, you should just buy it on Steam and beat it before reading anything else on this page, as it contains many spoilers.

Q: What is an AU? A: “Alternate universe,” a term used for fan made universes in relation to a game, TV show, book, etc. The exact definition of an AU is ill defined within the UndeTale Fandom, but is generally anything that takes the character/s of the game, and either changes aspects of them, the world they are in, adds new characters some times, or alters the story in some way.

Q: What is this Underground Academy about? A: Monsters and Humans have always lived on the surface together, often in conflict, but nonetheless, they lived together. In a world of mighty humans, and magical monsters, some choose to have them go to private schools exclusively for humans or monsters. Now, a new student shall be attending the prestigious UnderGround Academy, the top monster exclusive school in the country. There is one issue. Frisk is a human...... and they aren't the first. Frisk is one of eight, eight humans with the ability to use magic, a power usually only held by monsters. These anomalous humans somehow have gained the ability to use it, and it has been discovered Frisk is capable of it. Because of it, they are now being sent off to learn alongside the seven other human students, and hundreds of monsters in the UnderGround Academy. As of now, this is an ask blog where you can send the characters asks, and they respond though descriptive text.

Q: Will all the answers be as long as the last three? A: No.

Q: Is there a story? A: Kinda? Maybe? I’ll probably do a full story eventually, but for now, it will just be the asks, and the stories behind the given answers.

Q: Who runs this AU? A: Me! More specifically, I am firerulezz116, but just call me... Renn, how ‘bout that? There is also my friend Arrow, who helps toss ideas back and forth sometimes, and has volunteered to do art for the blog, and has now officially been made a member of the blog (as in they can post stuff), so serious thank you to him for that! Another friend i know as HaloKaitlen who reviewed the original draft i made for a story about this, and liked the idea of the AU (they also have immensely helped with my writing skills by roleplaying with me).

Q: Is this the original blog? A: Yes. I mean, as of writing this, there aren’t really others (i mean, UT school AUs, sure, but not UGA ones other than this).

Q: “BUT WERENT THE MONSTERS SEALED UNDERGROUND-” A: No. This is an Au, so no, not in this AU.

Q: “BUT WAIT FRISK IS HUMAN WHY ARE THEY MAGIC-” A: BECAUSE THIS IS AN AU(period)

Q: Are all humans able to use magic in this AU, and If humans aren’t supposed to be able to use magic, why can Frisk a few others use it? A: No, they aren’t supposed to be able to. As for why these few can? An excellent question. Next question please.

Q: Why not do art? A: Because i take a long time to draw, and am bad at digital art (which means crummy photos of my half decent hand drawn art). My friend Arrow has volunteered though, so thank him for that.

Q: How do resets affect this universe? A: They don’t, this AU does not have resets, i simply don’t think they have any role in the story, and as such, they don’t occur. Besides, why would any of them be getting killed?

Q: Will there be a schedule? A: No, not really. I shall answer when i can, when there are things to answer (so if you want frequent updates, i need asks)

Q: Can we do M!A (Magic Anon)/warp in characters from other AUs? A: Yup! Go right ahead! I’d love to see it! I may not do all MAs, and they most likely will not be cannon, but i’d still love to do them!

Q: Are we allowed to summon characters from other AUs? A: Yep, any AU will do (well, i may not respond to some admittedly, but most), just have the appear, and say/do something, and we shall see! These definitely wont be cannon, though the characters can maybe just, i don’t know, have peculiar dreams with other versions of them AUDIBLE WINKING NOISES.

Q. 1.What is self? How does the Indian notion of self differ from the Western notion? Ans.: Self is an organized cognitive structure. It can be understood in terms of subject and object or I and Me. It refers to the totality of one’s conscious thoughts, and feelings which pertain to one’s own self. .

Indian Concept of Self:

Self is characterized by the shifting nature of the boundaries.

The Indian view does not make rigid dichotomies.

It is based on collectivistic Indian society.

Western Concept of Self :

The boundaries between self and the group are rigid.

It holds clear dichotomies between self and group.

It is based on individualistic society of the West.

Q. 2. What is meant by delay of gratification? Why is it considered important for adult development? Ans. :

(i) Learning to delay or defer from gratification of needs is called self-control. It emerges from self-regulation. (ii) Self-regulation is behavioural component of self. (iii) It refers to an ability to organize and monitor ones own behaviour. People who can change their behaviour according to the demands of the external environment are high on self-monitoring. (iv) Self-regulation leads to self-control. (v) It plays a key role in fulfilment of long-term goals. (vi) Indian culture provides us effective mechanisms like fasting (vrata or roza) and non-attachment with worldly things to develop self-control. (vii) It is ones ability to say ‘No’.

Psychological techniques to develop self-control are: (a) Observation of Own Behaviour: it provides us with necessary information that may be used to change, modify, or strengthen certain concepts of self. ‘ (b) Self-instruction: We often instruct ourselves to do something and behave the way we want. (c) Self-reinforcement: It involves rewarding behaviours that have pleasant outcomes (like going to see a-movie with friends if we do well in exams).

— Self-control is important for the development of mature personality. This is the reason that all cultures emphasise the self-control. It helps in the fulfilment of long-term goals. Indian cultural tradition provide us with certain effective mechanisms, e.g., fasting in varta or roja and know attachment with worldly things for developing self-control.

— Self-control is also important for effective functioning of social network. Q. 3. How do you define personality? What are the main approaches to the study of personality? Ans. : The word ‘personality’ is derived from the Latin word ‘persona’, which means a mask or false face which Greek actors used to wear when acting on stage. According to Gordon Allport “Personality is the dynamic organization within the individual of those psychological systems thqt determine his unique adjustments to his environment.” One of the major approaches to understanding personality was to develop theories on what it was. There are many broad personality theories, which can be grouped into four categories: –

(i) Dynamic approaches, which emphasize on-going interaction among motives, impulses and psychological processes.

(ii) Type and train approaches, which focus on people’s characteristics, stubbornness, shyness and so forth and how these characteristics are organized into systems.

(iii) Humanistic approaches, which emphasize the self and the importance of the individual’s subjective view of the world.

(iv) Learning and behavioural approaches, which emphasize the way habits are acquired through basic learning process. Q. 4. What is trait approach to personality? How does it differ from type approach?(CBSE 2007) Ans. : Trait approach psychologists explain personality on the basis of specific psychological characteristics. Type approach psychologists believe that personality can be classified into broad categories. Traits are relatively stable, persistent and characteristic patterns of behaviour which makes the individual different from others.

(i) These are overlapping, i.e., inclusive in nature. (ii) Traits are specific psychological characteristics, e.g., shy or timid.

Types are cluster of similar traits. (i) These are broad categories. . (ii) These do not overlap, i.e., exclusive in nature, e.g., extrovert or introvert. Q. 5. How does Freud explain the structure of personality? Ans. : The Id:

(i) The Id is the original source of personality, present in the newborn infant, from which the ego and super ego later develop.

(ii) It consists of everything that is inherited, including the instinctual drives—sex and aggression.

(iii) It is closely linked to the biological processes and provides the energy source—the libido for the operation of all three systems.

(iv) It is totally unconscious and works on pleasure principles regardless of any,external potential costs of seeking the gratification of impulses.

The Ego: (i) The ego develops out of Id because of the necessity for dealing with the real world. The ego’s task is to hold the Id in check until conditions allows for satisfaction of its impulses.

(ii) It operates on reality principles. For example, a hungry man would want to have food at any cost due to id impulses, but it is the ego which delays tl’ i hunger impulse until the appropriate conditions are found.

(iii) The ego is essentially the executive of the personality. It keeps a person working for a living, getting along with people and generally adjusting to the realities of life.

(iv) Ego mediates between the demands of id, the realities of the world and the demands of the super ego.

The Super Ego: (i) It is related to the values and morals of the society as taught to us by our parents and others. It works according to social norms. (ii) It is concerned with morality—whether various ways that could satisfy id impulses are right or wrong.

The main functions of the super ego are: (i) To inhibit the unacceptable impulses of Id such as sex and aggression. (ii) Freud assumed that Id is energised by two instinctual forces, called life instinct and death instinct. Life instinct is individuals, tendency to construct whereas death instinct is for the destruction. According to Freud, life instinct is more dominant among human beings. According to Freud, the instinctual life force that energises the Id is called Libido. It works on the pleasure principle, and seeks immediate gratification. It is source of energy. Q. 6. How would Horney’s explanation of depression be different from that of Alfred Adler? Ans. : While Karen Horney focuses more on interpersonal relationships during childhood, Alfred gives greater importance to personal goals of an individual.

There are, in my opinion, Horney would attribute the cause of depression to parental relations with children which are characterized by excessive interference or indifference. Deep anxiety would result from the behaviour rewards the child which, if is erratic, indifferent and discouraging feelings of isolation and helplessness will also emerge. Alfred Adler would, on the other hand, attribute depression to the feeling of inadequacy and guilt arising within the individual, due to the inability to achieve his/her personal goals.

These goals provide an individual with security and are important in overcoming feelings of inadequacy. If individual is not able to attain the goals and could not overcome inferiority appropriately then it leads to depression. Q. 7. What is the main proposition of humanistic approach to personality? What did Maslow mean by self-actualization? Ans. : Humanistic theories emphasise personal responsibility and innovate tendencies toward personal growth. They focus on the importance of people’s subjective attitudes, feelings and beliefs especially with regard to the self.

According to humanistic approach, we human beings are most creative, growing, fully functioning and self-actualizing people.

Fully functioning persons, according to Rogers theory, psychologically healthy persons who live life to the fullest.

They live in the here and now and trust their own feelings. They are sensitive to the needs of others but they do not allow society’s standards to shape their feelings or actions to an excessive degree.

Rogers suggests that each individual has a concept of ideal self. If there is discrepancy between real self and ideal self then individual develops maladjustment.

Rogers proposed two basic assumptions: (a) Human behaviour is goal-directed and worthwhile. (b) People always choose adaptive and self-actualizing behaviour.

Rogers believed that many individuals fail to become fully functioning persons because they grow up in an atmosphere of conditional positive regard and develop distorted self-concept# which interferes with personal growth. Such people fail to self-actualise.

All human beings desire unconditional positive regard, freedom of choice and feeling of fulfilment for attainment of self-actualization.

Humanistic theories don’t deny the importance of past experience but they generally focus on the present.

It is a state which people have reached their own fullest potential.

He had an optimistic view of man who has potentialities for love, joy and creative work.

According to him, human beings are free to shape their lives and to self-actualise.

Q. 8. Discuss the main observational methods used in personality assessment. What problems do we face in using these methods? Ans. :

Observational method is a very powerful tool of psychological enquiry. It is an effective method of describing behaviour.

A scientific observation differs from day-to-day observation in many respects,

(i) Selection: Psychologists do not observe all the behaviour that they encounter. Rather, they select a particular behaviour for observation.

(ii) Recording: While observing, a researcher records the selected behaviour using different means, such as marking tallies for the already identified behaviour whenever they occur, taking notes describing each activity in greater detail using short hand or symbols, photographs, video recording, etc. (iii) After the observations have been made, psychologists analyse whatever they have recorded with a view to derive some meaning out of it.

(iv) Observation is a skill. A good observation is a skill. A good observer knows what he/she is looking for, w’hom he/she wants to observe, when and where the observation needs to be made.

Observation can be of the following types :

(a) Non-Participant vs. Participant Observation:

1. Non-participant observation (i) To observe the person or event from a distance. (ii) The observer may become part of the group being observed. (iii) In the first case, the person being observed may not be aware that he/she is being observed. For example, you want to observe the pattern of interaction between teachers and students in a particular class. . (iv) Install a video camera to record the classroom activities, which you can see later and analyse. Alternatively, you may decide to sit in a corner of the class without interfering or participating in their everyday activities. This type of observation is called non-participant observation.

2. Participant observation (i) In participant observation, the observer becomes a part of the school or the group of people being observed. (ii) the observer takes some time to establish a rapport with the group so that they start accepting him/her as one of the group members. (iii) the degree of involvement of the observer with the group being observed would vary depending upon the focus of the study. The advantage of the observation method is that it enables the researcher to study people and their behaviour in a naturalistic situation, as it occurs. However, the observation method is labour-intensive, time-consuming, and is susceptible to the observer’s bias. Our observation is influenced by our values and beliefs about the person or the event. Q. 9. What is meant by structured personality tests? Which are the two most widely used structured personality tests? (Delhi Board 2010 Part) Ans. : Structured personality tests are self-report measures that have the following features:

Questions are direct and structured.

They are called self-report because the examinee has to respond objectively to the items of the measure and his/her response are accepted as they are.

They are objective in nature and they deal with the present state of mind.

— Self-report measures use inventories and questionnaires to assess conscious part of personality. — Goal of the test may be revealed. — These tests assess only conscious part of personality

Their results depend on motivation and emotional state of the examinee; they are

non-projective and direct inferences are made. Some of the self-report measures are:

1. Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (EPQ): This test was developed by Eysenck to assess two basic dimensions of personality namely introverted—extroversion and emotionally stable—emotionally unstable (Neuroticism).

2. MMPI: Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory. This test was developed by Hathaway and Mckinely.

It has been found very effective in detecting psycho-pathology like hypochondriasis, depression, hysteria etc.

The test is divided into 10 sub scales. This test helps in clinical diagnosis of various mental disorders like hypochondriasis, depression, hysteria, etc.
