anyway uhh jokes and the mayhem aside i am. not looking forward to the eminent discourse and the hsr vs genshin situation flaring up again thanks to W + ratio incident.

(ensuing ramble dont mind me)

and like. for me im kinda like? idk not distraught enough to call myself torn or anything but it sure is a bit of a Huh moment to look at the way hsr operates w the community and all compared to genshin.

btw i have no like great morsels of wisdom here im just word vomiting some thoughts lmao

but like. logically (or should i say. rational- *GUNSHOT*) and purely from i guess the "hoyo" slash business pov. its 2 different games from different teams that belong to different genres and operate in vastly distinct environments in terms of like. competition and player retention. a turn based game like hsr isnt the kind of like. groundbreaking juggernaut that genshin was and is to this day (like. the famous "genshin killers" wya lmao). so to a certain extent at least its like. i can see how it affects this stuff i guess. genshin to this day hasnt felt the true pressure and need to care abt the community the way hsr is clearly angling more for.

but also imagine genuinely whiteknighting the genshin side of things to just settle for that excuse alone WDJWJKJWDKWD no fucking way 💀 like. that is Not the point im making at all. bc there comes a certain point where its just. yeah theres arguments to be made abt how the games differ and how hsr incentivizes pulling for and makes more new 5* charas and has no open world so needing to distribute f2p pulls thru other means is a must etc etc etc. but theres a point where that just falls flat.

and while i do agree the genshin community can strike up shitstorms that are more about outrage than anything substantial like. first anniversary with google classroom and all of that being a good example. but having Been there. while it was taken too far at points the reality of that saga always was about the cumulative community feeling hitting its breaking point. it was a lot of things accumulating and piling up in terms of frustration that led up to that 2.1 meltdown and honestly hoyo can only blame themselves. no need to relive that one too much my point just is that while for me (at least for now) im not feeling any of that like. deep hollow disappointment at realizing genshin will never truly beat (and arguably, i dont rly think its ever wanted to) the allegation of. the hsr team just being allowed much more freedom in terms of fostering goodwill w the community and stuff. i can still genuinely understand if this ratio thing for hsr ends up becoming another final straw for that feeling to rise up again for some genshin players. bc just like 2.1 this too is a cumulative thing. hsr is getting new gamemodes. constant massive QoL. freebies and limited-time events with permanent story and gameplay content. responding to and addressing tons of player complaints. genshin is... attempting some QoL? a tiny bit? like its just a whole situation.

and that feeling genuinely sucks. obviously dont attack random people like the cast or minor devs with no executive power or google classroom. or fuel this whole hsr vs genshin tribalism thats apparently athing. thats so stupid. fuck off. if i see another assassination attempt on dawei bc of hsr getting free fucking ratio i dont even know what to say 💀

but still its easy to be all "wow entitled terminally online gacha players" and yeah that can be true but i also dont like reducing all of that long term resentment from unaddressed complaints and issues and tiny disappointments accumulating over time for people who very much love genshin and want to be able to love it even more. to just like. haha greedy people want freebies. ofc hoyo doesnt owe us shit its a company and even with hsr this generosity shouldnt be turned into some parasocial "oh theyre on our side" thing. its just two games that want to make money. genshin and hsr both.

but it still sucks that theres such a discrepancy. and as long as ur not being toxic about how and when u express it i think that feeling is completely fair and valid. its not nice being passionate about a game and its potential while investing time and possibly money into it and still getting treated like shit year after year just bc genshin is still too successful to be forced into caring about us peasants lmao. venting and memeing and even sending appropriate complaints to hoyo are all fair game to me lmao. go wild

tho i will have to say that i do think the ultimate antidote to that feeling of disapppointment in particular imo still consists of touching grass like. its not good to be overtly attached to this stuff on an emotional level. i get why people would end up in that position esp given how genshin literally started during quarantine and was a massive source of comfort and joy in incredibly tough times for so many (myself included). but still. hoyo is simply not ur friend and ultimately its still just a couple of gacha games. finding other sources of happiness and comfort is v important. but being affected by this baseline isnt an individual failure or something wildly unreasonable at all.

for me im not too emotionally affected or anything but i cant deny this thing does have me thinking a good bit. as someone who naturally gravitates more towards genshins open world and its style of worldbuilding and aesthetic and its characters so even if i do enjoy hsr overall its just. a bit of a bitter taste u get in the mouth from all of this.

im not interested in discoursing on this or even like. protesting against hoyo particularly bc its clear that the genshin team has chosen its stance on the matter and i doubt another incident will really sway them much. the push will need to come from elsewhere if things are to ever change. im happy to get these freebies in hsr and i hope the game continues evolving and getting better bc it sure does have its flaws too. and the same for genshin. in a way a lot of the good in hsr is due to the hindsight 20/20 from genshins pitfalls and problems too (as well as arguably the literal sink or swim hsr faced from the poor reception to aspects of 1.0-1.3). unfortunately i doubt genshin would have the guts or be given the resources to retroactively address and fix those very same things in their own game. which is a shame.

anyway i dont have any particular point im going for with this i suppose i just wanted to get these silly thoughts off my chest. L + ratio to W + ratio was hilariously iconic and im still incredibly hype for all these things hsr has given us to look forward to even if the discrepancy with genshin does cast a shadow over this a bit. and i still love genshin and will keep playing it and keep hoping it can improve over time and get better. ultimately i care less about free ayaka at AR 42 becoming reality because "ratio hsr!!!1!1" than the devs genuinely investing the time and effort needed to make this game all the things it has the potential to be going forward. but im not holding my breath.

so yeah. if u stuck all the way with this whole situation u get a sticker. many thoughts in the head and you people following me are stuck with them im afraid JKJKDWJKWDJKDW

life entry 1

August 1st

Has a pretty nice ring to it, right? Sounds quite solid and fresh. and it’s also monday so i’d say this is pretty fitting for some new beginnings

I've decided to start this blog with the hopes of documenting my everyday life as it is sometimes contains little but undeniable progress and to keep track of the projects I'm doing atm. Also this is done to teach myself how to describe my feelings and overall experience in proper sentences instead of "lmao I'm fucked"

I’ll also most likely mention the fandoms i’m in and random facts that interest me. I know entries like that can look like (and be) a lot and a mess, so i’ll most likely divide them into thematic paragraphs which will also help me to not get sidetracked while typing. Alright, this will probably be a big post so let’s start with the first one

Starting this blog

The idea of starting this sort-of-diary blog belongs to my sister which in itself is a very good one but knowing me and my intense fear of starting anything new that I can’t be instantly good at... yyyeah, it was postponed for months. I think the idea originally was to start a blog for my little essays and stories about me and maybe even my OCs. I honestly don’t write that much nowadays so my progress isn’t that big, but some people (my group mates, teachers and friends) told me that they were actually interested in my writing (mainly in russian) and that sure baffles me but I don’t want those words to go in vain. So here I am, trying blogging like this for the first time.

My goals for now

Even I won’t post anything here anymore, I own myself some sort of reality check to understand where I’m headed and where I’m rn. Let’s separate this info into some categories:

Health

In the past I had some hormone problems which thankfully got fixed thanks to me drinking meds on time and being on diet. This resulted in me losing weight (went from 79-80 kg to 72-73 kg) and having less depressive episodes which is... surprising, honestly. I still get those but not that often. Now that I’m thinking about it, the extreme pressure from uni must have also contributed to that. Right now i’m aiming to

a) drink the needed meds for two months as prescribed every day which means i need to eat thrice a day (this is very unusual to me bc I used to eat mostly once a day), and

b) brush my teeth twice a day. I now know it is hard for me, someone with ADHD and possibly depression, to even just function and do basic things like these so I won’t be this rude to myself anymore. I’ll try to find something that works for my brain, reminders on phone or a lot pf physical ones, whatever works - works

Education

I have a paper that’s way overdue and I definitely need to write about 60% of it till the end of this month. The first deadline was actually at the end of may but I didn’t turn the work because because 1. my physical and mental health were in an awful state and 2. I was extremely terrified of the work since I’m the only student in the group whose resources are all in english, so not only I have to review and write on every scientific paper that I read on this topic but also translate it to russian. Even more than that - the possibility of me not writing a perfect work in one sitting fucking mortified me then, now I understand how stupid that was. So I was resting for the entire july after exams and now it is time to do The Thing. Day by day and however it goes. I only have to put in my best effort, not drain myself out of all my resources to make it “A-worthy”. The last chance is until september 26th.

Games

Yes, I have to write my goals even in these because my procrastination and memory problems are still in my everyday life, including hobbies. And one of ‘em are games which I love a lot and it's the only activity I very rarely get bored of. Right now I don’t really plan on playing any new games but rather focus on those that I play regularly - those are Honkai and Genshin Impact (yes, this gacha game hell by Hoyoverse got me for sure). Thanks to some leaks and recent official announcements I am now sure that I need to save up crystals and primos for two of my new faves - Elysia’s Herrscher form and Nilou. For that I’ll need to pay more attention to the events in the game rn because I spend little time in them.

Social Media

And somehow with all these plans I do manage to spend around 4 hours on TikTok which is disgusting honestly considering none of my drawings I started recently are finished even though they’re pretty easy. I'm not happy at all with how much time I spend there. It's ironic considering that's the reason I spend so much time there - it’s supposed to make me happy: it's fast dopamine, it's all familiar to a fault and it doesn't require me to do much. But the happiness that it gives me is just as easy and doesn’t last for long, I don’t even remember what I’ve watched when I close the apps. So that’s definitely a habit to terminate

That’s the end of the post for now, I can’t think of anything else to type and it took me an entire day to finish it bit by bit because I kept forgetting and postponing. Hope tomorrow it’ll go better since I’ll also start writing the paper and try to see what can be done with my horrible (for now) time management.

Hello! As you are both a MLQC and Tears of Themis player, how would you compare the two games? What parts of either game stick out after experiencing both of them?

hi! oml I had a lot of errant thoughts about this floating in my head, and this really gives me the chance to organize them.

The short version is, my favourite point about MLQC is the development of the male leads, while my favourite point for the much-younger Themis is the attention to detail.

MLQC Points

If I were to calculate the net amount of affection (if that's a good word for it) that I have for either game's 4 MLs, I would have to say that I'm more endeared to the MLQC boys, since I genuinely like all of them. Meanwhile for Themis, it's quite a massive spectrum for my feelings.

But of course, MLQC has much, much more developmental content than Themis does right now, so it's understandable that the Themis boys aren't quite as fleshed out yet for me to get attached to them (excluding XY ofc). Overall though, I think that MLQC's development of the OG 4 MLs makes for one of the strongest points of the game.

One other thing I really like is the pacing development between MLQC's MC and the MLs. The clear contrast you see at the beginning of the plot vs. the recent CNY/Valentine's karma, and all the ups and downs in between - it's pretty fascinating. (One concern I have about the Themis MC's relationship with her MLs is that... I kinda feel like things are really speeding ahead in terms of this point, and every single one of the boys are already 100% in. I mean, girl, I would not be laying my hand on my work superior's ab area at this point in the game.)

One point that I've really enjoyed about MLQC's plot is the whole idea of how things aren't always as they seem. The moral ambiguity of STF and Black Swan makes for a particularly good read, and I'm curious about S2's Gray Rhinos. (... Although, one thing I have to criticize here is that I feel like what STF/BW are aiming for is eugenics, not evolution... i.e. they should get their terminology right lmao)

MLQC music is my favourite! My favourite is probably S2 Ch.6-9's PV music, but some of the other PV music are also strong contenders.

Interface stuff, like how you can scroll between cards rather than having to go back to the whole listing of cards

Materials farming is way easier (on Themis you have to run through the whole battle, but at least you can auto it)

I've got to thank PG for giving free gacha pulls bc they don't do that in Themis :(

Themis Points

Thus far, what I really like about Themis' plot is the incredible grasp on detail (understandable and necessary, given the mystery-solving and logical-deduction nature of the game). Every questionable point is either resolved or is brought forth in the story and actively mentioned as a mystery still under investigation.

I feel like the scope of MLQC's main story is so grand that they either miss explaining details or some things are scattered in different places, so it's hard to piece things together (one thing I haven't been able to get over is how MC suddenly had a pocket watch to communicate with Victor on, in Ch.16, and I just found out recently that it actually gets explained... in Victor's R&S.)

I've got to say that Themis' MC is probably one of the best I've encountered. She's very smart, not impulsive, and her convictions on justice are very strong. The court trials at the end of each chapter are a good display of her capability, and she's shown many times that she won't rush into situations in ways that'll make things worse (see: Ch.5 when she agreed to stay back when Xia Yan infiltrated the laboratory; Ch.6 when she knew that she couldn't snap at Zhao Fei for his words to Zuo Ran). (I'm looking at you, MLQC MC in Gavin's Followup Date who rushed into a shootout situation for good film.)

Voice acting for all characters! Really helps with the immersion. 20% of the reason why I like Yang Xiao is because of his voicing. Granted, though, the setup of Themis plot is much more reliant on cast outside of the main characters than it is for MLQC.

PG opted to minimize interaction between their 4 MLs, but MHY went the opposite direction and Themis' 4 MLs are constantly interacting, which I actually quite like a lot. Of course, Themis' MLs are supposed to be working together in NXX, so it just works out like that. Regardless, it's enjoyable to see it - whether they're roasting each other, or they're doing their hyperintelligent analyses.

All the clue hunting and analysis (especially in the main plot) is really fun, and it does make you pay attention

No City Stroll-like mechanism (Istg, who was it at PG who decided that a good function was one where you have to leave your phone running for 16 hours if you're F2P??)

I could stare at Themis SSRs & SRs forever with headphones in bc of the Live2D effect + the sound effects

Big respect for the amount of work that goes into game events, especially the big events that have their own big plotline

Hey, it’s the frisk x sans anon lmao. I decided to tell the story because maybe you can get a good kick out of it.

I’m gonna call the Frisk/Sans shipper “Kool Aid” and my friend “Izu”, since that’s part of a nickname I have for them and they also kin Izuku Midoriya.

They also call me Kacchan since, like Katsuki, I am angry and ready to throw hands. Specifically with adult/minor shippers.

So, me and Izu are just minding our business. We’re just texting about random shit when, suddenly, they send me a video about this gacha person defending Frans. So! Both me and Izu are very against adult/children ships!

So we decide to comment on this person’s video and disprove all of the points in it.

One of their points was: “Frisk doesn’t have a specific age and the creator said we can choose it”

That’s factually incorrect. See, frisk is generally addressed as “Human child”, “My Child”, “Kid” throughout the game. A character even mistakes Frisk for their dead sibling who died when they were a child, so it’s very safe to assume frisk is around that person’s age. So while their specific age isn’t confirmed, they’re clearly a minor.

Another one of their points was they can make frisk an adult in AU’s. They even had an au where frisk and sans met when frisk was 15 and they started dating when she was like 20? Can I just,,,express to you how disgusting that is btw? That’s like meeting your friend’s kid at fifteen and you’re twice their age. then when they turn twenty you guys date. It’s still fucked up bc you saw that kid as a CHILD.”

And it essentially amounted to “you guys are haters!! Why can’t you guys quit whining!!”

So, my friend and I comment. They respond to my friend’s comment first and they both have a back and forth. Izu debunks every single one of their points while Kool Aid whined and bitched about Izu being a “crybaby” and a “complainer.”

Eventually, I shut that shit down. I say “Please respond to my thread. I very much think you support pedophilia and I’d like to have a calm discussion with you. They are not a crybaby in the slightest.

Please respond to me when you have the chance, thank you.”

After awhile, they respond to me lmao. I essentially say

“The fact you’re insinuating that this pedophilic ship is okay is utterly disgusting. Aging up a child to ship them with a grown adult is very literally gross. You’re doing that just so you don’t get in trouble.

You are also sexualizing this child. I hate the fact that for some reason you can’t just explore their dynamic as a parent/child dynamic or sans being an uncle towards Frisk.” There way l more stuff I said but I don’t want to give u so much to read.

So this person’s response is “Fuck u! You complain about EVERYTHING! This is my channel and I do what I want! I don’t support pedophilia!!”

After a back and forth, they ended up blocking us lmao. It took them two hours of them threatening to block us to actually do it.

Magia Rapport pt 2

August 24th prompt: What was your favorite event, and why? Is it because of gameplay or the story?

It’s hard to choose so I’m gonna just, gush a bit.

As you can probably tell I’m very biased toward the OG girls, I started Magia Record primarily because PMMM had become my new obsession and I wanted some sort of constant flow of content out of decade old anime lmao.

But another thing I think I hooked onto was Inu Curry’s writing. They really know Madoka Magica and aren’t afraid to really play with them- something the writers for a spin-off gacha game (as with most spin-off stories honestly) can be scared to do. Inu Curry made references, revealed secrets and built upon the story we already know- which lets be honest is what we always truly want from a spin-off series. Magia Record proper does this well by putting more magical girls into the world and letting us see things work out better for them than for the original cast, but what I really appreciated with this story was getting to see that old original cast get to get in on that, and these events managed to do that without watering them down any.

Under the cut is me going on for 3000 words about why I love these three events I’m so sorry. TL;DR at the very end-

I’ll go in release order,

A La Carte Valentine was one of the first if not THE first event I got in on. I was eager to bc 1 Gay Magical Girl Shit Guaranteed. And ofc 2 OG Cast participation.

I want to preface by saying I actually loved all the girls’ stories in this. I was very much still in a state of getting used to Iroha’s gang let alone trying to care about the secondary girls. I knew Tsukasa had this angsty Twins Separated At Birth Deal and liked seeing her home life (also I immediantly stanned Take. Regular well-meaning dude who has no idea whats going on just trying his best and hating his boss). I knew nothing about Ami except Cowgirl Meguca and getting the bulk of her personality in one short even I think really kept me from being absolutely sick of her, she’s just a cute silly teenage girl who could be in literally anything and I was able to just endearingly giggle at that. Hinano managed to do the heterosexual unrequited crush cliché without me groaning or missing any of her regular personality. Also was there a Ren part? I don’t remember because everything Ren does feels like a Soft Yuri Valentines Special. Also I love Momoko. Ok moving on to what I Really wanna talk about.

Madoka is genuinely my Least Cared About of the Holy Sextet. I don’t think she’s bad or even boring- Madoka has a depth to her character, like, really deep- but that’s not something ever really touched upon by the fandom. Even when people like her and make her the Heroine she’s Supposed to be, it’s usually in the context of “Girl who feels nothing but kindness and happy thoughts would cut off her right hand to feed to a hungry dog. Isn’t she so Good????”. And honestly, while I understand the point it was going to make, I wasn’t crazy about her sacrifice in the end of the series. (Team Homura “Rebellion Is Good Actually” ftw) All because I think that I’m an Adult Woman watching this like “You are 14yrs old and need to be home playing Sims and not sacrificing yourself for the greater good you stupid silly little baby girl”

So my point is here near all fan content I encounter tends to emphasize whats sort of my least favorite facet of Madoka. I don’t think she made the ‘wrong’ decision in the context she and the story were given, but it’s still a sad thing to show a depressed(!!!) insecure girl resolving to give away her very existence so that every other girl on earth has a chance to just Dream. Oh and they still usually die young. But that’s ok because then she takes them and lets them sleep peacefully forever in her Heaven Basement (Yes I am bitter stan Homura I would yank this savior complex infant girl out the sky too)

MY POINT BEING (The servers closing let me BLEED OUT ALL MY FEELINGS) This event did not do that!!! It made Madoka…….. EVERYTHING SHE SHOULD BE??? ALWAYS??? Showed her HOW WE SHOULD BE ABLE TO VIEW HER??? (Read: Happy and Alive and Confident at no foreboding or sacrifice of anyone else!!!!)

She is Sassy and Surrounded By Friends and Really Funny??? And we get this Ridiculous Oh My God On Crack metaphor about her being this all-powerful apocalypse bringing being which is representing her love for the universe through her Witch form of Wanting Everyone To Be Happy And Safe With Her??? And she still risks herself to save everyone as is her Thing to do but we get to have her do it without erasing her existence as a human being at the end and if that is not some GOOD SHIT????

Ok next:

NGL Sayaka’s (fav character, inarguable best girl, can u not tell) parts in MagiReco til like the last arc have always left me a bit disappointed. She was the only late comer of the OG girls from what I understand and it kind of gives her the air of what a lot of the second(/thirdary?) girls suffer from. You can tell the writers can’t even figure out a trope to apply her to to make her easy and two dimensional to write about so they just don’t know what to do. They definitely try to make up for it (especially in the anime which Praise Be but that’s probably Inu Currys doing) but she’s still lacking like, any of the depth of her personality. Which, I guess I could anticipate. Because most of the fandom tends to as well. (again)

Gonna stop complaining and get on with- That didn’t feel as much the case in her Valentine event. Sure it was still the same formula of “The Issue Is Kyosuke” but that didn’t play out as grueling as her personal story did with “Nine Episodes Of “The Issue Is Kyosuke””

There was one big glaring heart-aching detail of “Mami isn’t really there because SHES IN A FUCKING CULT RIGHT NOW” which kind of jarred the event out of the ho-hum silly valentines sidestory these events usually keep up.

Sayaka has this crisis about Doing Anything Meaningful With Kyosuke which we all know what That’s calling back to, but in this environment we get to have Kyoko come right up and be in a position with her to earnestly and affectionately Push Her To Do It. The lonely little tsundere bitch girl pushes her Not Friend to Give The Bastard The Gotdamn Chocolate Already and for a moment you can only think about What If’s and If Only’s. Sayaka’s is still the weakest of the threes stories in this event but it worked harder to show us different sides of the characters then 6 chapters of Another Story managed to do.

And then there’s fucking Homura.

I will be, eternally grateful for Kuro. As a character that becomes metaphorical for the 2D ways we initially viewed the feathers and just NPCs in games in general, and also like, giving Homura a friend she actually cares about that isn’t the tangled dark web of Bullshit she’s gotten tied up with Madoka in. Please ask me about all my AU’s where Kuro is Homuras first girlfriend.

Seeing Moemura in Magia Record has always been a bit surreal, we never really understand just what stage of Trauma this Homura is in because Multiverses Are Hell, but this event gives us a good chunk of a Homura who still has hope and faith both in the world and Madoka. Theres this wonder to her that while still bogged down by terrible experiences still has the energy to be Trying. And she sees a girl who used to be like her- which when you think about it is probably what Madoka saw in her- and she wants to help. Because Madoka helped her. And Madoka is the best thing in the universe and maybe Homura can be just a little bit closer to that.

Kuro is too far gone though, as is the reality frequently in this series, things don’t work out just because of circumstance. Kuro was a bullied, insecure little girl who realistically shouldn’t have had to become a rampaging monster because of it. We’re reminded of this being the reality of the Madoka universe. Homura, is reminded of this reality. Homura loses this one chance to bring hope into the world like Madoka brought hope into hers.

And then her story ties into the ending of Madoka’s. Madoka saves her life yet again, even as Homura continues to feel miserable and empty. But at least Madoka is with her. The girls then share a quiet, intimate Valentines together. And you sort of understand how Homura fell so far into the darkness that the only thing she was able to still care about and fight for was Madoka’s safety.

That shit slaps. It slaps you right in the heart and causes fucking bruising but then u want it to do it again because you’re masochistic and Meguca Is Suffering.

Anyway I hope Kuroe slaps our hearts more in season2

~Nagisa’s Wish~

Ok, I don’t remember what got me so simp over Nagisa, I think it was the heart-aching irony that Mami adopts the witch that fucking ate her. But that is my baby now and I’d die for her. Fandom Charlotte whose pink and silly and loves her mom and is Mami’s cancer-riddled girlfriend is cool and all but she isn’t a tiny Halloweeny baby whose fucking bitter angry and manically obsessed with cheese due to PTSD.

I had saw a summary of Nagisa’s Wish reposted just to quickly explain Nagisa’s backstory, and as such immediately had to search out if that crazy ride was true- so I actually watched this whole event probably before I downloaded the game. It was surreal on its own but replaying it when it came to NA didn’t lessen it any- I got to process more of what I was witnessing and as result stanned Yu pretty hard.

I guess to explain my Emotions here, saving Yu for later- calls for me to just, describe who Nagisa is as a human being and my headcanons surrounding it all with what this event gave us. Whether you consider it canon or not it’s one version of events that we were given and that I am all for accepting.

Nagisa’s Mom was a celebrity, she could have been an actress though I also like the idea of her being an Idol. She met Nagisa’s Dad oh-so romantically and got knocked up- they very well could have been married but it doesn’t seem clear enough. He seems to have left too suddenly for legal matters like that. Nagisa is approximately 11, and while she seems to remember her Father, she doesn’t in the sense of having had a relationship with him or any feelings. Her Mother has to “explain” why he left, so Nagisa was probably still young even if not a baby. What I’m getting at here is the timeline for when Nagisa’s Mom Got Like That. Nagisa can remember her from before she was, and then says that she got sick after her Dad left. So what I’m wondering is did Daddy Momoe ruin this young rich girls life, give her syphilis and then leave her with a baby she was unfit to care for in poverty? I know half of this is running on anime logic but Holy Shit all the possible ways reasons and ideas for why things could’ve gotten This Bad.

Is it ridiculously dark and edgy that the original story we were given was “Girl wishes her dying mother could have her favorite cake but then realizes OOPSIE-DAISY I could have wished for her to Not Die instead!!!!” got turned into “11yr old hates her abusive mother so much she wants to make her suffer in the most symbolic way she can and then goes mental when she isn’t able to do it”??? Yes. But if I had the mental capacity to I have to admit I was in a position to be just as bitter at that age too. I can’t call it unrealistic. I may infact be projecting hard with how much I support and enjoy this backstory.

Anyway Nagisa was in such a state of trauma and distress at a horrifically young age when she died that it broke her mental faculties so severely that even when she came back as a literal Angel of God she had blocked it out so deeply and thoroughly she seemingly regressed to an even younger capacity and hyperfixated on the trait that she has before used to try to bond with her Mother who she had died hating.

And that also slaps u right in the heart.

A N D T H E N !

~Beachside Bonds~

Just the simple structure of this story was so enjoyable and nicely done. We finally get to see the OG girls in a context we wouldn’t be able to in literally any other scenario. They’re going on a summer vacation together and Homura is sentimentally journaling every single second of it. Is this mayhaps because she’s never gotten to be this happy and blissful with these girls she loves so much??? Of course this is are you not paying attention what the fuck. Homura is so optimistic and healed and hopeful she’s acting like what she might actually be doing as a normal teenage girl. (A heartrending contrast to the end of her Valentines Special)

We get nothing short of pure fluffy Slice Of Life shenanigans on the beach which even includes a bunch of the Kamihama girls that the OG crew knows! And they talk about it! And introduce eachother! And their friends commentate on it! Ren gets to see Kyoko Not Being A Bitch and then Sayaka teases her about having made friends and oh my god my heart is turning into cottoncandy as we speak Mom holy FUCK

Sayaka’s existence fucking matters in this story! It’s her families Hotel they’re staying at and she has relationships and memories with the creepy twins that live there and she talks like a fucking person??? And gives opinions??? That aren’t just copypasted “Justice is Good and Bad things are BAD!!!!”

Mami is fresh out of her fucking Cult Drama and she’s still trying to be cool Senpai but then she DECKS Homura in the face and gets scared by the ghost stories and then turns into pudding and waxes nostalgia at Kyoko out of nowhere IT’S ALMOST LIKE SHE’S A FIFTEEN YEAR OLD GIRL????????

This whole fucking backstory and truly horrifying Romeo and Juliet on Acid love and death story between Yu and her girlfriend and like if I wasn’t fascinated enough by Yu just being the creepy organ harvester before but apparently thats what she became after she literally made some sort of wish that erased all of her memories besides the nickname her sweetheart used for her and coincidentally also added to her the task of killing all Bad People?????

Yu made a wish to be able to get rid of All Bad People preserving the innocent version of herself who grew up with this girl and it was right after a failed double suicide attempt on fucking Doomed Lovers Cliff fucking Lifetime Will You Ever.

It then pairs with Homura whose PTSD gets to shine through a bit in being unable to believe any bad sort of Madoka which how could you try to force her to at this point while Also pairing Homura with Ren in the “Gay Love Saved Our Lives: Traumatized vers & Vanilla vers”

I don’t remember if there was a symbolic finale and tbh I have forgotten a lot of the details with Yu and her girlfriend Whatsherface because that shit was just so shocking and bizarre to read and much too painful to reread in a timely fashion just.

That shit hurted but it was full of so much love and hope both doomed and stolen but still was wrapped up in the comforting concept that This Is The Universe Where Homura Gets To Be Okay This Time.

She’s still scarred beyond comprehension and this ghost drama accentuated it all but at the end of the day this is still the Safe Universe where all of them are alive and the Holy Quintet are friends and they’re all going to be okay (Godoka & Aniplex willing) and so many of us love Madoka Magica because it shows girls fighting through the same pain we’ve been through and keeping their hope alive and here we get to see them actually find peace in a clunkily written fanservicey spin-off mobile gacha game and hey, that made me happy while I got to experience it. Thanks for the ideas and memories and tragic backstories and funny thirdary characters MagiReco I’m gonna take em all and Run.

So after getting some feedback here and from some gacha folks on discord, the overall picture I’m seeing here is that people had a much larger problem with the way Minase wrote a lot of the servants and their interactions than the concept of Agartha in general. I also see alot of people base their dislike on the JP version, which I can’t really comment on because I don’t speak the language and I’m not a fan of basing opinions on possibly biased translations for or against the subject matter

tl;dr, I liked it a good deal! Hated the repetitive dialogue, but the blended fictional worlds, Megalos, and a bunch of other things were really to my liking! I view it as a cool singularity with a sloppy ending and sloppier dialogue. Not as good as Shinjuku, but leagues better than Septem, London, or Orleans on my chart.

also as far as villain servants go, Columbus goes in my “What a douche, I love em!” shelf of fame right next to Mebd and Teach. I mean look at this dude!

Truly Rider is best servant class in all respects! (also his artist is great go follow!)

Addressing the elephant in the room first, I was really confused at the whole misogyny complaints. I saw a few people who found the tyrants to be sexist in concept, while others took more issue with Fergus’ interaction with Scheherazade, or how Fergus as a character was treated overall.

I don’t imagine there are THAT many people who see the kingdoms as the problem, as they never came off as a commentary on gender to begin with, and context shows that they wouldn’t even work as commentary since all aspects of them are either A) fabricated in regards to the non servants, or B) altered by Scheherazade’s Noble Phantasm in regards to actual servants. If anyone saw them as the writer’s take on gender roles, I think it’s unintended.

People taking umbrage with Fergus and Sche, I can understand a little more, as alot of that is a symptom of the repetitive dialogue that plagues this whole singularity. Fergus’ message near the end is one that I agree with (living in constant fear of death isn’t living at all, and using your trauma as an excuse to generalize or hurt other people is unacceptable), and I was a big fan of how the end of his quest to become a good king is realizing he’s just not meant to be one.

The thing is, character arcs are carried by their dialogue, and having Fergy either repeat the same crap about training/not hitting women or break the pace of a scene to internally monologue about the philosophy of a kingdom really did no favors. I also wished that his revelation about there being strong women was something someone else told him instead of something he just randomly remembers when the time is convenient, because that makes his whole “younger self” aspect kind of meaningless outside of not letting him be playable. Medea and Medusa lily were far better examples of how one goes about writing these younger servants and their relation to the knowledge of their future selves.

I think it would’ve worked better to use Adult Fergus instead, and have him show new levels of discomfort both with the situation in Argartha, and with his own behavior when first interacting with Sche (thereby betraying her expectations and reason for summoning him by actually being more thoughtful and reserved than she initially expected) . Maybe have him focus more on male camaraderie with Columbus and the resistance than sleeping with women, as I don’t imagine he’d have much interest in cell dividing zombies with fabricated personalities, even if he doesn’t know that’s what they are yet!

Now, Scheherazade is actually my favorite character from this singularity besides Wu. I love stories that have trauma & behavior developed from trauma (rather than principle built upon trauma) as an antagonistic force. Having to perfect your craft of storytelling to survive for over 2 and a half years while also suffering abuse and captivity is nothing short of awful, and the fact that this attracts the Demon Pillar to her and allows them to work together is really interesting.

I did dislike the fact that she seemed more affected by her infatuation with Fergus than his encouragement to find strength and pride in her storytelling, and see her nature as a heroic spirit as a boon to it, rather than something to fear. It feels like a big flaw of her character in FGO, which is that DW can’t decide if they want her to be a shivering leaf that hates fighting, or a sly beauty that subverts authority with her tales. Ideally these two aspects should be combined, but it comes across as inconsistent since there’s no solid in-between to give that transition more nuance.

That being said, I think the folks that label Fergus’ speech as inherently sexist are kinda missing the forest for the trees. No amount of headcanon or fan interpretation changes that he’s a character highly motivated by carnal instinct, and the fact that it’s the lense through which he tries to argue against Scheherazade’s viewpoint is pretty consistent, though the afore mentioned issues with his dialogue makes his sudden shift back to being horny on main jarring and could be fixed by him always being adult Fergus. I can at least appreciate that the story brings up the clumsiness of his words and that even if they get the message across, the flaw in delivery means that Scheherazade will not indulge him on his terms, even if she’s grown just a tiny bit out of her old mindset (plus everyone calls him out so it’s not like his attitude is treated as being “good”, just that it’s not all there is to him). Bottom line I love both those characters, and Agartha left them both in a place where I’d love to see more about them and their relationship explored!

Drake/Dahut was unremarkable (though I was a huge fan of the character design, and I wish DW would make that a skin for Drake). The concept of Ys and her being a creepy rapist/murderer using Drake as her puppet was interesting, but she really didn’t get screen time needed to do anything with that. Wu Zetian on the other hand, I felt was really fun!

I would’ve liked to see her more before the confrontation while we were in the Nightless city, but her speech about working her way up from nothing to becoming a ruler through sheer tenacity, contrasted against the lady that tries SO hard not to let it show that she likes being doted on really clicked with me. All in all, she definitely swiped Gorgon’s spot as the 4 star servant I’m gonna use that ticket on later in the year!

Penthesilea and Megalos had the highlight of the singularity. Nothing was cooler than fighting a bunch of Amazons as those two clashed overhead, and despite almost losing that fight due to a string of Penthesilea’s intrusions hitting my team, I actually wish they did more damage at this point because I wouldn’t even be mad (fyi Colombus actually got killed by Penth during the Megalos fight and I couldn’t stop laughing).

Now if we’re talking about parts of Agartha I absolutely hated, that’s Phenex with a bullet! Besides his bossfight being the most drawn out and irritating thing ever, the fact that both him and the Pillar in Shinjuku don’t fight us in their more humanoid form feels like such a waste. These are supposed to be 4 (5 counting ccc) Pillars that had enough independence gained to run away from Goetia, so the fact that they still look like pillars and never become those human forms when we fight them seems like a real dropped ball here when it comes to visual storytelling and Story/gameplay integration.Also, after how radical Shinjuku’s final fight was, Agartha really didn’t do much to sell Caladbolg finally going off in the middle of the fight (the poison of Wu’s NP was a nice touch at least!)

so yeah, I had quite a few problems here, but I always regard the art and media I consume on a component basis, and for me, the lows here really couldn’t beat out the fact that Agartha was this really cool combination of fabricated settings with tyrannical rulers facing off against a villain masquerading as a revolutionary hero, with a Nightmare monster appearing anywhere at any time, and our heroes seeking to find out which of these figures was the one truly responsible.

This was always the strength of the Remnants imo, taking looser concepts that normally don’t fly in Nasuverse fiction, and using it to twist the rules of servants through singularities in a way the original seven didn’t outside of Camelot and Babylonia. It wasn’t as great as those two by a long shot, but at the end of the day, It’s left me quite excited for Shimosa, which I’ve been told is the hypest Pseudo Singularity out of the bunch.

It sucks that this singularity gets such a bad rap when it has so many cool and interesting things in it, but if people dislike something, then there’s nothing for it. As for me, I’d give it a B- on an F to S scale, with Camelot still sitting at the absolute top for me. Anyway, Happy 4th of July tomorrow if you celebrate it, and here’s to EoR 3 and Shirou eventually getting in the game (lmao nope)

Top 10 Otome Husbands

@destinedatmidnight tagged me (thanks boo!!!) in this Sophie’s Choice style tag and I put a LOT of thought into this! It took me all day (lmao sorry to my boss because I did NO work today. I just held a tournament on paper of my favourite dudes). I am confident in these 10 and I’m hoping I can convince you to be my sister wife with at least one of them if you haven’t tried them yet!

Things to keep in mind: I have played probably close to 80 games at this point and I’ve liked/loved almost all of them! I’m sticking to characters with Main Stories only and I tried to pick guys I think would make anyone a good husband and not just the guys I stan even though they are garbage XD! (i.e Takeomi Shiina).

In no particular order!

1. Lugar - Cinderella Contract. Hands down the most odd Love Interest in any game I have ever played. When I downloaded the game, I had written him off entirely. I have never been big on blondes and I am not down with mullets, but one day I got his story in a gacha and it was WILD. It was sexy and weird and funny but the perfect mix of all three and I was sold. His back story is also super interesting. He’s a bishop by day and a borderline vigilante at night. His hobbies include biting you, referring to you as “Miss ____” and scolding you. If you like weirdos, you will love Lugar.

2. Yukimura Sanada - Samurai Love Ballad Party. My first SLBP boy and still my favourite. Yukimura has everything you want from the perfect otome husband. He’s adorable, considerate, and honorable (to a fault at times). He grows up a lot in every route of his and even his enemies respect the hell out of him. If you haven’t played SLBP yet, do it! And start with Yukimura! He’s perfect! His hobbies include sweating, blushing, misunderstanding everything, and wielding a spear. If you like good boys, you will love Yukimura.

3. Jumin Han - Mystic Messenger. My first otome love ever and still one of my strongest! Jumin is a total surprise when you play his route. He’s odd like Lugar but also chameleon like in that he can shift and be anything and everything whenever. He’s got issues for sure but he acknowledges them and (as much as one can in 11 days) works to improve himself while also showing conviction and going for what he wants. I know everyone loves a dominant Jumin but he is a lot more than his red ribbon. His hobbies include petting his cat, taking shitty pictures, drinking wine, flying places on a whim, and cross stitching. If you like Ikemen Sengoku’s Kenshin - you will love Jumin Han.

4. Taisuke Nadauchi - Rental Boyfriends. Raise your hand if you were expecting me to pick Takeomi Shiina lol! While Takeomi is hands down the sexiest of the RB gang, Taisuke is the best man overall. He has the best route and dynamic with MC in the whole game. There’s a lot of growth and development from both he and the MC in his route and they have a super healthy and supportive relationship which is a bit of an anomaly in this genre. They are absolutely adorable and you need to experience the magic! His hobbies include doing makeup and hair, roasting everyone around him, staying up late to clean after gatherings, and getting shy over you when you are fresh from a bath. If you loved Toma from Irresistible Mistakes, you will love Taisuke.

5. Chiaki Kira - Several Shades of Sadism. Chiaki is a total brat, but I love him. He’s almost useless without MC but he knows it (which I love), but he will also fight for her when things get rough. He’s cheeky, pushy, hilarious, and good father material in his relationship with Mutsuki. His hobbies include being a pain in the ass, holding things just out of your reach, reading you to filth with hisnyouger brother, not cleaning his room, and burritoing himself in his blankets. If you like Ikemen Sengoku’s Nobunaga, you will like Chiaki.

6. Soji Okita - Era of Samurai: Code of Love. Soji is extremely sexy and intimidating (terrifying) to begin with, but quickly it becomes obvious that he is the kind of sweet that makes your knees give out. He is so caring and considerate and everybody loves him. His whole existence might be pure angst, but it beautiful. He will stop at nothing to protect you and practically gives up everything for you. The maturity he brings out of the MC is nothing short of phenomenal. His hobbies include being a dad to every stray child, being bffs with every townsperson, and murder. If you like SLBP’s Saizo and/or Ikemen Sengoku’s Mitsuhide, you will love Soji.

7. Nobunaga Oda - Ikemen Sengoku. Nobunaga is arrogant, intelligent, open-minded, and sexy as hell, but he also has a super sweet immature side that is really endearing. Everything of his I have read makes me giddy as hell. He is logical and extremely passionate and I totaly dig it. His hobbies include stealing and eating candy, actively avoiding being tickled, playing board games, and not sleeping. If you play religiously or have never played an otome game, you will love Nobunaga.

8. Yushin Kuze - Decoding Desire. This idiot lmao. I love him so much! He is a total pain in the ass, but he’s also the most transparent love interest ever in that he loves you so damn much. He’s always experimenting with (literally) and inventing things to make MC’s life better/more interesting, but they usually backfire horribly and one or both of them always end up naked?? He’s smart as hell and a lot of fun, but when he gets serious, he’s serious. His hobbies include blowing things up, inventing modifications for both humans and androids often against their will, eating caramel things, and digging large holes for no reason. If you like Ikemen Sengoku’s Masamune, you will like Yushin.

9. Soryu Oh - Kissed By The Baddest Bidder. Adorable and willing to get murdered for you. Not sure what else to say about him other than he is cute cute cute and I love him so much! He’s so enamored by you and your acceptance of his dark past and present. He’s always trying his best, even if that sometimes means blowing up the kitchen. His hobbies include being jacked, reading detective books, thinking about eggs, and threatening Baba & Ota with his gun when they piss him off. If you like SLBP’s Masamune, you will like Soryu.

10. Miyabi - Enchanted in the Moonlight. Miyabi is...absolutely delicious. I love how bold and shameless he is. He knows what he wants and he makes it happen but he’s also extremely considerate underneath all his pushiness. Have I mentioned on here that I have a real bad ears and tail kink? His hobbies include rubbing up against your leg, eating Inarizushi, whispering graphic things to you in public, and chasing his tail. If you love SLBP’s Shingen and or Nobunaga, you will love Miyabi.

(Lmao yes I realize now that most of these guys look the exact same. Tall, Dark, and Handsome never fails!)

I'm a huge fan of your work, and seeing that piece for hackers memory reminded me I still need to play that game. I had a lot of fun with cyber sleuth but I was worried there wouldn't be enough new content to keep me interested. How would you rate hackers memory compared to cyber sleuth?

Alright, full disclosure, I have a lot of opinions, so I apologize in advance.

I did not enjoy cybersleuth past chapter 10 when Nokia [insert spoiler here] and ever since then, I always felt like we (as protagonist) were secondary to the plot. Which would have been fine, had Nokia gotten fucking development within cybersleuth to take over as protagonist instead of us. On top of getting no development to [insert spoiler], she’s extremely irritating, which didn’t make me like the fact she was considered more important to the plot at all. She even talks to you as if you’re her sidekick and let me tell you, this shit can be cute because DRV3 managed to do it in a way where the character (Kaito) is earnestly trying to help the protagonist (Shuichi) develop past his anxiety and fears. But that’s not what they did here. It didn’t work. It just felt like Nokia was putting us down, regardless of how “uppity” and “positive” she was trying to phrase it. Sidenote: I also absolutely detested how she treated Agumon and Gabumon so lmao when chapter 10 dropped I had no fucking idea WHY because imo they should’ve hated her.

We never SAW how she got into the position she got in (Ch10). It felt absolutely hamfisted and undeserved. Kind of like a “oh yeah, it’d be cool if this happened now” shit. Then, to top it all off, the protag magically breaks the rules Suedou sets before them, basically slamming a middle finger at the screen saying “you thought this would make sense? no, we need to hamfist a happy ending sort of kind of maybe, it’s all very unclear WE DONT KNOW”. Honest, I completed all quests and side quests, got max hacker rank, entire field guide, I did everything to cover every last bit of the game, and I’m still sour on the turnout and the payoff because the game so clearly didn’t give a fuck about its own rules since it constantly broke them and failed to foreshadow Kuremi entirely. I enjoyed a bunch of the sidequests more than the main plot of the game, and to be fair, I believe I also remember the sidequests better than the main plot and this should absolutely not be the case.

That being said.

Hackers Memory does not fuck around, and I say that in the best way possible.

It presents you as secondary in the big scheme of things at the very start, (in regards to the original cybersleuth ending, because the story takes place at the very same time events are happening in cybersleuth) but it makes you a protagonist of your own story, and this is truly where the game shines.

It really makes it all about you- as Keisuke- as an individual, from the very start to the very end. It feels more like a journey of a specific protagonist with a fixed personality, and if the original had done this instead of give us a more flat character, I think I would have enjoyed the game more. I couldn’t stop playing this game the moment I got it, and easily beat it in about 4 or 3 days because I was so invested. Hell, in Cybersleuth, I never gave a fuck to collect all medals, and I decided to actually do it for this game just because I adored every last aspect of it? I did gacha in this videogame for 8 hours that gave me absolutely nothing in return, this is how you know I’m serious about the quality of a game- I waste time in it doing POINTLESS SHIT and I still have fun.

I went in expecting to be secondary, but the plot absolutely knew how to shine the spotlight on this protagonist (Keisuke) flawlessly and draw out his best characteristics. Cybersleuth protag is a clean slate at best, but Keisuke has a variety of very unique responses even without giving you the option to respond. He reacts very fixed to certain events, giving you a general feel of what he’s actually like, which is different from the signature way Cybersleuth Protag simply cocks their head a little or does the “:o” face when someone says something surprising. Keisuke has a lot more expressions, and you can easily tell what the characters are feeling (once you get to know them) just by their expressions alone. There’s a scene at the very start of Hacker’s memory where Yu (Protag’s best friend) and Keisuke share 4 silent “...” dialogue boxes with only a small variety in expression.

At my first playthrough, I had NO CLUE what this meant. I assumed it was all an awkward silence (since it’s quite literally at the start of the game) but after knowing exactly every little aspect of their personalities- that entire scene bears a different meaning. I could TELL what both of them wanted to say, and what they wanted to convey without actually having to use words. That might be because what facinated me most about Hacker’s memory was exactly Yu and Keisuke’s friendship. What’s great here though isn’t just the fact that this happens with Keisuke and Yu. It happens with every character. I replayed, noticing the quirks early on, and knowing the backstory- was aware of why they were acting the way they were. I knew of the secrets, I knew of the motivations, and honestly, I think Hacker’s memory only gets better a clean run right after you beat it. Yes I... I’m being serious. I replayed it the very second I completed it. This might also tell you something of how invested I am, and how big of a change this was to experience in contrast to the original cybersleuth which left me glaring at the ceiling angrily begging for the plot to make some lick of sense. And unlike cybersleuth, the plot here, is quite honestly, really good. Despite the stakes not being as high, and ultimately won’t matter in the end (because cybersleuth end)- you... FEEL like it matters more. Just because of how intimately you’ve come to know the characters that’ve been with you for so long.

All the relationships are developed, focusing mainly on the team at Hudie (your new hacker team). When I say the relationships are developed, I mean, quite literally, every important character has some role to play in the other’s life. Ryuji: the leader, a mentor to Keisuke, who later becomes a follower of Keisuke’s- outlining a good start and end for their dynamic as leader becomes follower and the student becomes the master. Chitose: Aloof and carefree, never quite speaks up against Ryuji despite the shit he knows Ryuji is causing, but becomes more mature and manages to put Ryuji in his place after he loses control. Erika: A shut-in with a one-track mind (Ryuji’s little sister), doesn’t open up to anyone, not even her brother, especially LIES to her brother to protect him (and Ryuji does the same to Erika, outlining the fact they’re both trying to protect each other but simultaneously hurting each other in the process without knowing) but she learns to rely on Keisuke (Chitose and Ryuji are childhood friends, so naturally, she can’t tell CHITOSE her worries because he’ll get worried and relay the message to Ryuji, so Erika in a sense sees her oppertunity to open up and ACT once Keisuke joins Hudie) and opens up to HIM later more than anyone else. Chitose acts like a second big brother to Erika when Ryuji isn’t around, and he also acts like comic relief character that’s there to give Keisuke some time to relax between cases. Unlike the first game, you actually FEEL like a hacker this time around, giving you a wider variety of hacking options, including minigames (which sadly arent that fun but- hey, it’s something. The part that IS fun is the BONDS you get to rank up- THEY’RE LITERALLY CALLED “DATE TIME!” and they’re the ONLY reason I played so so many of those minigames).

The game isn’t dominated by women anymore (If you play as female in CS, you’ll quite LITERALLY only see Arata every couple of chapters in a sea of tits, and while this is usually an aesthetic I can get behind, I hated absolutely every goddamn female character with the only exception being Kuremi. I detested Date so much. Every time she opened her mouth I wanted to mute the TV. I absolutely LOATHED Nokia for everything and anything she did. I couldn’t stand Fei because of how aggressive she was (even if Fei and Yuuko was something I definitely would have shipped had Fei just been toned down, and LUCKILY- I absolutely love Fei now, but that’s ALL thanks to Hacker’s Memory- I actually like NOKIA now too- which is all thanks to Hacker’s Memory as well). I liked Yuuko bc she hit all my right notes, until she proved to be a tsundere in disguise (she also manipulated us and admitted to it so I quickly said FUCK NO to that and she dropped on my list) but even she managed to get better treatment in Hacker’s memory. I hated Jimiken too, to be honest. I disliked a LOT of characters in cybersleuth, but once they appeared in Hacker’s memory I? I saw a new side of them that I didn’t before. There’s 1 particular “Hacker Memory Fragment” you pick up about Yuuko that details her visits to the hospital to check up on her brother and honestly? This shit. This one hacker’s fragment managed to give me so much better insight into her character than ALL of cybersleuth. Now that shit is admirable imo. I admire Hacker’s memory for making me LOVE every character I disliked. Date was one character I disliked thru Hacker’s Memory too, but towards the end, even she grew on me. I still don’t like majority of her dialogue, but she doesn’t seem so one-dimensional anymore. My main problem with Cybersleuth was that everyone seemed to have “THE ONE MOOD” and that was it. I loved Arata because he varied a lot, and he and the protagonist had some really, really good chemistry, but that’s about it? Compared to how I love everyone from Hacker’s Memory, I wouldn’t even consider the two games on the same level, simply because of how well the second one was executed in comparison?

I took my time with this reply, because to me, cybersleuth was average as a digimon game for me. Cybersleuth had a villain i absolutely ADORED!! But they did piss all and nothing with him. He had such an interesting goal, but when everyone gathered to stop his plans it was like. He lost all motivation for his goal? What the fuck. You don’t even get to fight him he’s just. There. He was awesome, they shoulda done more with him, and my only qualm about hackers memory is that they STILL DONT DO ENOUGH WITH HIM. He gets a bit of a backstory without WORDS really it’s all implied and shit but it explains why he acts the way he does in cybersleuth. You understand the reason behind his actions now, what got him there, and his motivations more clearly. God I wish we got more of him though. Cybersleuth for me was a 4/10 as a game and a 6 or a 5/10 as a Digimon game. I’d honestly play DW3 over Cybersleuth if I had to be perfectly honest...

Now, Hackers Memory however managed to score 10/10 for me of all the digimon games I’ve played- putting it at the... top, actually. For good reason. The characterization is consistent, every characters motivations are clear, every character has reasons to take the actions they take, and none of it seems forced or random or even undeserved. Sometimes, you’ll dislike a character the game wants you to dislike. It will lead you in to turn your expectations around and force you to think of a character in a completely new light. You’ll end up loving each and every character regardless of how shitty they act because you can understand the way they think. You can empathise and you can relate much better than you could in Cybersleuth IMO because so many characters in Cybersleuth made me think “well, Angela, if you weren’t such a BITCH maybe i’d feel sorry for you” which was a perpetual mood tbh. I felt absolutely no sympathy for a lot of the characters in Cybersleuth bc I felt like they deserved the shitstorm they got. Whereas, in Hacker’s Memory, the only character that DESERVED to be punished, actually GETS PUNISHED, and the character that does something wrong goes out of his way to REDEEM HIMSELF. Now this is some tasty characterization I tell ya.

To top it all off, because the game has to follow cybersleuth logic, I absolutely thought they were going to fuck the end.

No.

No, it was.

It was absolutely perfect.

It was emotional, it didn’t feel forced, and best of all?

It made sense.

As fucked up as the ending from cybersleuth was, in this universe, they can’t control their end because of the first game--- so this ending has to happen regardless of what they FEEL is fair. Which means, yes, the ending is unfair. But it leaves you with this... bittersweet feeling of longing- wishing they COULD have made a change. It’s a really nice metaphor for how things sometimes are out of our control, and we’re forced to deal with a fate someone else drops on us regardless of what we may feel or want to act on. We just have to make the best of it?

10/10 as a Digimon game, and 9/10 as an actual game because I do believe I am nitpicky as fuck and I rarely give 10/10′s but if I wasn’t a nitpicky fuck, this game would DEFINITELY easily be a 10/10.

If this ramble wasn’t indication enough, I really love Hacker’s Memory. You should definitely play Hacker’s Memory.
