i still haven't recovered from this
valjean's choice of phrasing is sending me lmao he could have used something so much subtler
but no, he goes with "blow that man's brains out" ("brûler la cervelle à cet homme-là"). he is SO over javert. he's like, "i wanna fucking end that guy."
and javert just goes "yeah that's fair"

For @valvertweek, I have posted:
A brand new *third* chapter of "Annoyances," my Brick-based post-seine tragicomedy! My excellent beta reader @fremedon tells me this chapter is very good, and they have great taste.
The fic's summary:
Jean Valjean, exhausted from the barricades and the sewer, somehow finds the strength to drag Javert out of the Seine. He has no strength left for anything else. He collapses from exhaustion on the quai near the Pont Au Change as the situation rapidly devolves into tragicomedy. Inspired by a tumblr post from @Alicedrawslesmis: “Oh god can you imagine Valjean having to jump into the Seine to get Javert out? the man has had No sleep for the past idk 40 hours and just had to crawl through 5 miles of sewer carrying a dead body and thinks he’s going to lose everything to the law and then this fucking asshole jumps off a bridge? and he has to jump after him? and swim like an olympic athlete against the current to get the guy out of the water from the rapids? that’s too much. That’s just god fucking with him at this point. Valjean pulls Javert out of the water and passes out from the exhaustion of the last two days and Javert is like ’…great. Now I have to drag this man back to his apartment AGAIN’ but Javert is also exhausted from the last two days so it’s just a comedy of errors”
The title of the fic comes from these lines:
“That Javert, who has been annoying me so long; (...) that frightful hunting dog!”
—Jean Valjean in  Les Misérables Volume 1 Book 7 Chapter 3, Hapgood translation
“You annoy me. Kill me, rather.”
— Javert to Jean Valjean, in Les Misérables Volume 5 Book 1 Chapter 19, Hapgood Translation
In Chapter 3, we will explore: Cosette, and the severe consequences of abandoning your daughter alone to go run off and risk your life without any explanation!

TW: mention of javert's suicide
follow up on me being sad about unrecognized les misérables music!!
i think a few people know about the song called javert by red diamond dragon club - but did you know there are MULTIPLE amazing songs called javert?!?!
before i start, i would like to state that these are all my interpretations of the songs, and the writers have not confirmed everything i say!!
1. javert - red diamond dragon club
this song is probably the most popular one among the fandom, but it's still unrecognized.
this song is almost an alternate version of javert's suicide. it is an indie(?) rock version that shows us javert's anger over being released through lines such as:
"valjean, what have you done to me?"
"did you know what you did when you set me free?"
"and you won't leave, trapped inside my mind. mon dieu, this devil is shaking the ground."
"won't you tell me why i'm not okay?"
"you make the night not follow day"
"and who am i? looking down, i see your face, the water rising up"
this song is not only catchy, but it is a good display of javert going through the five stages of grief, including anger.
2. javert - penny and sparrow
this is a short, pretty folk song about javert. while there are romantic undertones in this song, i interpret this as javert's internal feelings and that he isn't speaking of a specific person.
he could very well be, with lines such as, "when you hold me, it's knee jerk," but i would like to think this is just how javert feels trying to interact with people in general sometimes.
"i can feel the beginnings of arguments to often start off that way"
"well fuck how i feel, it's a bad gauge of realness"
"how can it be, is their room in your home for a man that feels to prone to fall through?"
"can you honestly expect me to confess that ... or i'm worth the work it takes?"
3. javert - deadman
this song is by far my favourite on this list, being number one on my spotify wrapped this year, so this will be a longer section of this post.
i'm not actually sure how to define the genre of this song. it could very well be a folk song or a country song.
this song is confirmed to be written about someone talking to the ghost of javert after he has committed suicide. it is a song that switches between both english and french (depending on the performance), and it is a truly beautiful piece of music through both lyrics, performance and instrumentals.
it is FILLED with references to javert's life, including christianity, water, blood, wine, as well as many metaphors about these things as well.
my favourite reference in the song is the one made about javert's actual death (keep in mind these lyrics vary in different performances):
put your gun on the floor
i'll pour you some wine
i am willing, but my spirit is not
this verse alone is simply amazing. the lyrics to this song are so well thought out and beautifully performed, and i really suggest listening to this song. and while javert didn't die to a gun, you can still understand what they're referencing. this could even be a previous attempt, before the seine.
the song is also a little mysterious, with this verse:
we used to be friends
when you used your old name
back when you worked for the law
they could honestly be talking about anything in this verse, and i like that it's up for interpretation.
the chorus is also incredibly well written with it's references to javert drowning:
and if ye strike the rock
then the water comes forth
water that used to be blood
formerly blood
and becomes blood again
and unstopped, rises to flood
however, suddenly at the last chorus, they change the word "blood" to "wine".
there are a few more songs titled "javert", however, i am unsure if they are actually about the les misérables javert or not, so i will not be including them.
anyway, go give these songs a listen if you haven't already! if you know any more songs about javert, please let me know! i recall hearing about one a long time ago, but it wasn't called "javert," so i can not find it.

'34! The Les Misérables adaptation which asks "What if these characters talked straightforwardly to each other?" Quick top notes on part III only:
I felt catharsis from all the other version of these goddamn characters while watching Cosette and Valjean openly discuss Marius and the barricades. The dynamic here is believable and well balanced: Cosette is angry and afraid and a little hurtful with it, but still seeking comfort from her father (and comes across very much sixteen—as one might imagine, given Josseline Gaël was herself only seventeen); meanwhile, Valjean looks a little helpless (I am reminded of the novel dwelling on how unprepared life left him to raise a daughter) and very pained. Valjean hurts his own feelings asking Cosette if she loves Marius above all else, which gets the predictable answer that anyone would understand does not actually mean she wants to abandon her papa utterly, but which you can clearly see him interpreting as precisely that. All in all, this portrayal makes them much more normal, particularly Cosette, while still retaining the kernel of Valjean's profoundly damaged understanding of his role in Cosette's life. Not shoddy work for ten or so minutes of film.
Harry Bauer's strange hand flaps when he protests "I have my own reasons for emigrating!"—why are you being so relatable, sir?
Is Harry Bauer a fucking beast or did they use wires to help support Jean Servais' weight? Bauer tippy-taps his way around the streets and sewers as if he's not fifty-and-change with a grown-ass man sprawled over his back. You get a sense throughout '34 of Valjean's strength and imposing physicality even though Bauer is on the surface kind of dumpy looking, which I found impressive.
I am also impressed by the intensity of Bauer's "fuck this!" expression during the shit quicksand sequence. Later, he will refer to a "wound"—I never actually saw him acquire such a thing (probably due to Criterion's glitchy playback), so I'm left to think he's referring to the psychological/emotional damage of this moment.
Harry Bauer gives Marius a little pat after dragging him through the sewer, which for me echoes Gabrio, and just as in '25 I find the gesture very sweet and gentle. Bauer is a somewhat cantankerous Valjean—very growly—and moments like this balance him out.
Javert also picked up clear communication skills in this adaptation and writes a straightforward suicide note to his superiors, who proceed to cross his name out of a big book?? I laughed, I'm sorry, why is there always an element of comedy to these suicides?
Further catharsis: Valjean's attempt to gaslight and push away Cosette is strangled by a combination of Marius' equanimous reaction to his confession and his own inability to reject Cosette's need for comfort. I prefer the book—I'm here for the emotional agony that is this idiot character's idiot self-martyring—but I am nonetheless here for '34 going "that will take too long (and is too fucking sad)".
The final lines are giving me fits (bad). Namely: "God is just. It is man who sometimes is unjust." I might be going off harebrained on this, but it seems to me that Les Misérables is (among other things) about change, and this is a statement that proposes a kind of stasis, a things-always-are-thus. It isn't even particularly meaningful or thematically pertinent in the context of '34 taken as its own work. It's particularly galling me because I imagine it is riffing poorly off Valjean's "Parce que les choses déplaisent [...] ce n'est pas une raison pour être injuste envers Dieu"—which is a very clever line, meaning something entirely different, and doesn't deserve this treatment.
Irrelevant to Les Mis as such but occasionally a certain camera angle on Jean Servais' face would remind me how gay I am, while other times he has fuckboy vibes?
Overall: a solid film, not quite on par for me with '25, but I'll doubtless rewatch. In particular I appreciate that it deviates from the source material in ways that are consistent and meaningful (though I will say—god, does this movie ever have its silly moments; I forgive/applaud it for them).

gotta say that one recording of les mis on west end from 06/14/2014 is basically my favorite and my comfort watch (i’ve opened it on youtube 14 times this month and actually rewatching it rn) and i feel like we’re not talking about it enough.
jean valjean is perfect there and i mean it in terms of both acting and singing daniel koek is unbelievable (i almost cried when he was singing with tiny cosette when he found her in the woods). javert is extremely angry and hisses all the time and honestly i’m always here for that (also his soliloquy drives me insane every time just. oh my god). fantine is probably the best one i’ve ever seen in my life she portrays the character so beautifully. the thénardiers are literally so funny and their acting in the robbery is impeccable (i’ve rewatched the robbery more than any other part of the musical). enjolras is majestic and grantaire is fucking insanely good like you know how he is right? one moment he’s silly and goofy prankster putting his arms around enj and marius’ shoulders and then he’s literally grasping enjolras during drink with me with tears in his eyes and cracking voice. little cosette’s acting is SO GOOD AND ON POINT IT’S LITERALLY CRAZY??? marius and cosette for once don’t piss me off because they actually suit their roles perfectly and you really believe their acting when you see them. eponine is very edgy and sarcastic and also perfect. gavroche pats javert on a cheek during the barricade and i was speechless about how good his acting is in general. AND ALSO THE ENSEMBLE HELLO???? i always pay close attention to them and here they are doing such an amazing job, all of them (my personal fav is master of the house tbh i’m crazy about this song and scenography in this scene here is hilarious and amazing). i probably missed some details but only because fuuucking hell. fucking hell. please hear me out people this is probably the most important les mis recording in my life.

Theory on Feuilly being Petit Gervais because I promised it and it's been in my head as an idea for so long
Alright so here's my masterpiece
Looking at some timelines online, I found the year when Jean Valjean was released from prison. That’s October 1815. Within that year he meets Petit Gervais and steals his piece of forty sous. Petit Gervais is said by Victor Hugo to be “about ten years of age”(keep that in mind). His age isn’t exactly known, but based on the fact that we only know Petit Gervais looks like he’s 10, he could be a bit younger - say 7-10 years old, maybe even 6 years old, even if it is unlikely.
It is said in said website that Marius was born in 1810 and met les amis in roughly about 1828-1830. That would make him 18-20 years old at the time. That does not mean les amis couldn’t have been a bit older. Feuilly could have been born a bit earlier, say 1808-1806? That would make him about 20-24 years old at the time.
In 1815 aka the time when Petit Gervais was introduced, Feuilly would have been 7-6 years old.
Time skip to barricade day. It’s 1832. Feuilly dies along with the rest of les amis, being about 22-26 years old.
To make it simpler, here’s some timeline thingies (i rly don't know what to call them. Assumptions? Idk and to be honest that's nOT THE POINT):
Born 1806, met Jean Valjean in 1815 (9 y/o), met Marius in 1829 (23 y/o), died in 1832 (26 y/o). Doesn’t sound right for him to die at 26 to me. Let’s alter it then.
Born 1807, met Valjean at 1815 (8 y/o), met Marius in 1829 (22 y/o), died in 1832 (25 y/o)
It seems right. He’s not too young to look 10 years old in 1815 when meeting Valjean. He’s not too old when he meets Marius for the first time, or when his death date arrives.
It’s not impossible age wise. Character wise?
If you think about it, Feuilly is said to have lost his parents at a young age. Who says he couldn’t have been Savoyard?
My take? Petit Gervais spent his early life in the Savoy region. When his mother died, say when he was about 5-6 years old, he left to travel northwest in order to make a better life for himself. He stays in a few places, he meets Jean Valjean during that period, his money gets stolen. Heartbroken, he's off to Paris. After living there for a while (maybe as a gamin?) he gets a job as a fan maker.
I have zero knowledge on the evolution of languages, but I think ‘feuilly’ translated in English means ‘leafy’. After doing some search, I found out that fans were mostly made of paper at the time. It’s therefore possible that the name ‘Feuilly’ was a nickname given to Petit Gervais by his peers in Paris after his newly found occupation.
The fact that Valjean stole his money would also explain his preoccupation with justice. Think of it as a villain origin story or something idk. It could also be one of the reasons he educated himself on reading, writing, reading history and later on joining les amis (hot take I know)
So to sum up, it's not exactly 100% proven that Feuilly is Petit Gervais, but it is highly possible. So I'm just going to assume they're the same person and you can't do anything about it (like have you ever seen them in the same room? Don't think so)
The end
Were my sources trustworthy? Probably not
Am I still going to take pride in this? Abso-fucking-lutely

Full disclosure idk that much about Shattered Glass but I think that a good SG AU of a MagsMegs relationship (either romantic or platonic) would basically be the plot of Les Mis.
SG Megatron seems like he's got that Jean Valjean (tired old man oh whoops I accidentally became a father figure to these eighty random children and if I don't help literally every old woman I see on the side of the street I'm literally the most horrible person alive) energy.
And SG Magnus is basically Javert. (Well, regular Magnus is Basically Javert, but SG Mags seems like he's got the more, There is no such thing as mercy and you filthy peasants decepticons are predisposed towards being filthy criminals and I will personally and happily crack down on you with no restraint the second you take a step out of line, side of Javert.)
Just think:
Megatron escaping prison or the mines or something and starting to become his regular self, but then he meets someone (like the mistress of flame or something idk) and their like, no, you csn still be redeemed (but my fr ie n d, you left so e a r l y!). And he has all of Valjean's Moral Existential Crises while he's in hiding.
And Magnus is like, that damned con, no one escapes my clutches, I'm gonna track him down n o M A T T E R W H A T!
And I really like the idea of them getting along when Megatron is Mssr Madeline under a false identity or something, and Mags being like, you know, he's not that bad actually, Respect.
And then Megs chooses to reveal himself to save someone and goes on the run.
And Magnus looses his shit. And now he's like, that aBSOLUTE BASTARD ILL KILL HIM FOR THIS.
(This I SWEAR BY THE STAAAAAAAARRRRSSSSSS!!!
(I'm totally picturing Phillip Quast as the voice of Mags))
Idk who Cosette or Fantine would be in this scenario. Maybe Cosette would be like, Soundwave.
(I think that might work for SG Soundwave.)
And Starscream would be Marius!
And Eponine would be like, Shockwave, maybe (there's a whole lot of stuff about SkW being secretly in love with SS)
And then eventually the whole Revolution thing happens, though I guess Megs would be the leader of it as well, way more involved than JVJ actually was.
And the Decepticons would be the Les Amis!
And Rumble would be Gavroche!
Oh no
And then Mags goes undercover in the revolution as Minimus, but then he gets caught and EVERYONE wants to kill him but Megs is like, no, I'll do it myself, and then secretly let's him go.
And everything goes horribly and Megs rescues Starscream as well cause he's like, ugh, gotta make my child happy.
And Mags confronts him like, hands up you bastard...wait, why are you helping the street rat....wait, why are you coming with me willingly.
And Megs is like, naw, I forgive you. You're not that bad.
(There's nothing that I blame you for. You've done you're duty nothing more....)
(I'm crying)
And Magnus goes into an existential crisis because 1) decepticons and all criminals are supposed to be self serving irredeemable bastards and 2) no one's ever shown him kindness in his entire life (maybe not since his bro??)
And he still can't deal with this right now and throws himself off a fucking bridge
And Megatron dies because he's a sad, tired old man and his child don't need him no more and he's done all the good he can
And the whole ending and everything is still just as sad except now it's worse.

went and saw the les mis nat tour. thought i maybe wouldn't cry so much this time, was wrong. having lots of thoughts and feelings. i'm gonna dump them here in whatever tangle they come out in because i want to document some of it while it is still Fresh.
act 1
did not expect the prologue (esp on parole) to hit me that hard. i almost cried and that was when i knew i was in for it tonight.
there were!! little brick moments esp in the prologue!!! that i really loved!!!
valjean stealing a coin from a kid. this has to be a petit gervais reference even it it came early during on parole instead of the brick-accurate what have i done
baptistine and mme. magloire were there with myriel!
fauchelevent got his leg wrecked by the cart and specifically had to be carried off, which doesn't feel like a detail i've seen often
the entire town coming out with pitchforks to see valjean arrested was A Lot.
they didn't do the parole slip rip-to-the-beat thing!! they just did one (1) at the end i miss it.
they gave?? most of the factory girls solo over to the foreman??? that was a weird choice
they made fantine's firing more personal for valjean, mainly by having her try to talk to him and be brushed aside during the factory fight. valjean also paused to look back before he walked offstage. i dislike this.
lovely ladies was so brutal. oh my god. i felt her degradation and despair in the lovely ladies descent a lot more viscerally than i usually do. and but god i wanted to punch bamatabois so bad. good work to the actor, but fuck that guy
tiny tiny nit but they kept saying monsieur mayor which was driving me nuts. pick a langaug dammit!
runaway cart continues to feel choppy bc of all the lines they cut out of it.
it's not by the face, it's not by the voice, no, it's by the lifting that you recognize a man. this will always be funny to me.
there was!! a french flag!!! flying over the courtroom scene!!! it had words on them but i couldn't see all of it. the middle looked like egalite as you'd expect, but the far right was justice?? fraternite seems like a weird one to replace with justice, so maybe the whole thing was different? I couldn't even see the left where liberte would go bc of the stage lights.
little cosette was so good. oh sweet child you desrve all the hugs.
surprisingly managed to mostly enjoy master of the house. hated the opening more than i ever have before, specifically watching the audience laugh at mme thenardier abusing cosette. i realize it's not entirely the audience's fault, the show is absolutely playing it for laughs, but the ick was high today.
i will never not find show me where you live funny
look down broke in while jvj and cosette were stil having their sweet moment. idk if it was intentional but it felt very ominous and it worked
oh god gavroche was so tiny. i've never seen a gavroche feel so viscerally young, with all the invincible courage and rashness and childness bravado. i almost cried when he first appeared just because he was so small and so young and i knew what was coming.
i did a lot of crying in not-technically-sad scenes because i knew what was coming. oh god.
gavroche seemed to have a bit of hero-worship of enjolras, a la his relationship to bahorel in the book. this did become relevant in the most painful way that i feared.
i love enjolras's red waistcoat in look down
on the topic of enjo's costuming, i make fun of him for being half naked a lot. but i realized today that all the students are fully dressed (buttoned up, waistcoat + cravat, jacket) in act 1 but end up at more-or-less enjo level of (un)dress on the barricade.
is?? state of (un)dress being used as a visual shorthand for revolutionary fervour???
i think??? enjo almost got arrested after the look down scene. i missed the actual onset but i looked back towards him to find an officer waving a truncheon menacingly in his face, so.
in my life felt very ick!! which is not what was expecting. mostly it's the staging where cosette is trapped inside the courtyard pushing out at the bars, valjean comes in, unlocks the door for himself, and then locks the two of them back in. it brought back beeblemis trauma honestly.
(obligatory???) acknowledgment that vlajean does kind of become cosette's jailor in the brick, but the musical doesn't really have the room for that kind of nuance. not when we see so little of them.
courf just?? randomly grabbed a gun at the from nowhere?? at the end of red and black???
enjolras then shouted to the streets! raising said gun right before do you hear the people sing. this isn't the baricades yet!! this is a demonstrably bad choice like one (musical) day before your planned rebellion. especially if he's already been almost arrested. boy, what are you thinking???
i miss the revolve. they had to do some weird snaky maneuvers to keep marching without walking off stage. it looked stupid honestly.
garoche & enjolras's deaths area also elevated by the revolve imho
also the barricade revolve is just cool
oh god how am i not at the end of act 1 yet.
the one day more overlapping medley at the end felt werid disjointed and i'm not sure why?
one day more also made me cry not bc the song itself is particualrly sad but i couldn't stop thinking in one day more most of you will be dead which was. heartbreaking.
okay now i'm done act 1
act 2
i have less to say about act 2 i mostly just cried a lot
the tragedy of on my own really struck me, i think bc eponine felt more defiant?? like more angry about her fate, less lovestruck.
i cried at now we pledge ourselves to hold this barricade. more anticipatory grief knowing what was coming.
enj felt like a very good leader which i always appreciate. i love him, my boy.
javert's uncovering felt so violent in a way that i'm not used to seeing on stage. they fought. several times. it was very physical and tense.
also gavroche was so fucking proud and i was so fucking proud of him too and so fucking sad.
the audience laughed at now hat i know that you love... me as well which was. weird??? is that normally a laugh spot???
a little fall of rain wrecked me, partly for eponine's death, but partly for gavroche showing up just in time to see her die. musical gave no indication of their relation but i know and i was sad.
the progression from they will see the people rise to the people too must rise to the people have not stirred. god!!! this is not new but it did strike me anew today!!
courfeyrac??? told valjean well done, sir and like banged his gun against the barricade as a gesture of respect/praise??? that was weird on so many levels. idk where that came from.
i started crying near the end of bring him home and basically did not stop for the rest of act 2. only lessened in intensity at times.
grantaire's verse in drink with me was very belligerent and enjo was not putting up with it. i'm used to seeing this as a moment for enjo to comfort/soothe r (at least in the last ~10 years of productions) but this enjo was not fucking having it. it was more hostile than comforting. gavroche ran off to comfort r after.
oh my god gavroche's death. sans revolve they obviously couldn't show him on the other side of the barricade. so we just hear some shots, and then he throws the ammo over, and then he gets to the top of the barricade -- and then he gets shot down, right into enjo's arms. he then gets passed to grantaire, who stands there holding him for the entire lead up to the final battle.
enjolras was?? the first to die??? he ran up to the top of the barricade not to shoot but to wave the red flag, and then was the first to get shot down. then the rest of the amis in the standard cross-beam of spotlights thing. and then, last of all, grantaire puts down gavroche, runs up to the peak where enjo died, and is shot.
i'm not exactly upset about grantaire getting that moment, but him getting it alone -- esp after enjolras was the first to die -- felt like a weird choice.
the oboe solo pause after the final battle continues to be my downfall
thenardier says [God's] as dead as the stiffs at my feet while standing over marius. i have yet to decide if this is an intentional staging choice as commentary on "God may look dead but he's alive, i promise" or just a coincidence
they dropped valjean's there is a life to save line, no idea why
javert was so unhinged during his suicide. he was waving a pistol around for the first half and i briefly but genuinely feared they were going to restage his suicide to be by gun. thankfully it was an unfounded fear.
the candles are still my undoing!!!! i knew exactly what was coming when they brought them out during turning and yet. and yet. the simultaneous blowing out made me bawl.
side note, ghost!grantaire and enjolras appeared flanking gavroche and my first thought was are they his parents now??
dear god please do not let them parent anybody. they're bad enough individually but as a pair??? unthinkable.
i almost laughed during valjean's confession bc all i could think was ahh yiss story time with papa. i was still crying but it did not stop me from snorting.
can we cut that weird opening to beggar at the feast. you know the one.
this one's a jew is more ick than usual given current events
tacking on i might try it too after this one's a queer does not, in fact, make it gay liberation!!! it just makes it gross!!!
you've already cut so many lines from this show, why is this bit still here
take it away and give me back the i remember eponine lines in the same damn song!!!!
i think that's all for act 2??? even if it it's itls fucking late and this post has exceeded 2k words so fuck it.
general notes
i can trace the 2012 movie influences in places, that was unexpected
splashing waves as the opening imagery of work song
were the msurm factory uniforms always that blue?
did fantine's death always have that white curtain?
fantine spitting on valjean was a hathaway thing, wasn't it?
gavroche gets to keep his this is the land that fought for liberty line! i'm torn about this bc i love those lines but also this is my school, my high society bit was good too
the harmony at the end of red and black!!!! it was like my favourite music change for the move i love that they kept it
entire master of the house scene staging felt very movie-ish, just in the ~vibes~ of it
nose boops!! valjean boops cosette like four times i'm p sure that's a movie popularization
actor / character interpretation thoughts
valjean was good! i liked him better in the first act 24601/madeleine side than on the act 2 fauchlevent side, but still good
fantine was angry and i liked that.
thenardiers were mostly good. weird that they made mme obviously lust over other people??
marius was fun! good balance of earnest lovable genuine and idiot himbo booby.
did not like cosette. this is the first time i've actively disliked a portrayal of cosette and it was a big pity. the musical does enough infantalizing of adult!cosette already, i really did not need the actress to play that up.
mixed opinions about javert. honestly i think he's a fine musical javert i just like my book javert too much. obsessed with jvj, openly defiant to madeleine, very Godly, that kind of thing. but his voice was good and his suicide was extremely unhinged in a good way.
i fucking adored enjolras. he felt older?? which is not exactly the right vibe but it came with the right vibe of authority and calm that i super super appreciated. also he sounded beautiful and his hair was a glorious mane of curls.
grantaire is a delightful garbage bastard man.
i've already talked about gavroche but god gavroche!!!
courfeyrac kept catching my eye in both good ways and bad. kind of felt like he became ami #3? (after enjo and marius, per the musical). very often on enjolras's left, the first to seize a gun, the first to praise jvj on "killing" valjean (that was weird, what was that), etc etc.
song list in playbill was not incorrect but kind of weird. notable mentions:
the entirety of prologue was just listed as prologue
both what have i done and javert's suicide were just listed as soliloquy (not even x's soliloquy)
confrontation wasn't listed at all?? i'd think it was folded into come to me, odd as that seems, except that just has fantine and valjean listed.
drink with me became drink with me to days gone by???
all the little bits and pieces of song missing was expected, but seeing none of the battles listed at all felt a little weird. not even the final battle.
the spotlights on stage were mostly yellow/warm white, except for when someone died/was near death, where they got bright cold white spotlights. except javert -- he got the cold white spotlight in stars, too, and in one day more.
was this an intentional choice to make a statement about javert??
was this just an accidental coincidence??
did other non-dying people get the white spotlight too and i just didn't notice??

HI new follower you seem cool! now you're my new mutual yeehaw. anyways i heard u have ocs can i hear about them? :D have a nice day <3
uuummm???? how????????? did someone just ask about my ocs???? thank you sm????? *starts having a seizure and cries* no but seriously these ocs have been sitting in my sketchbook for a month and the only people who know about them are just my close school friends. and then suddenly. a new mutual???? ASKING ABOUT MY OCS????? *dying of joy*
i have so many ocs but i'm just gonna pluck the two gay ones from the book i'm writing.
long post ahead. i'm bad at talking.
so basically there's the first one who i ripped off from jekyll and hyde. he's a drug addict and he also runs an illegal firearms bussiness. eventually he got caught and went to rehab. his name's daniel jackelyn and he's a very gender dumbass who likes starbucks and bothering people. dyes his hair the most craziest colours. you do not want to share a bathroom with him.
and we also have here miles luna who is a trans fbi agent with bad experience in relationships (he's not okay). he has an ex husband (who's probably a sex worker) who he still talks to but that's about it honestly. he likes spotify and listens to it when he does literally anything. legit. take away his spotify you take away his life. he has an organized playlist for literally EVERY FUCKING OCCASION. he has a playlist for showering, for cleaning, for laundry, for driving to work in a good mood, for driving to work on a hangover, for drinking to oblivion, for being stuck in traffic jams, literally everything. he's a bit autism and the spotify thing is, according to reddit, audio stimming.
how are these two connected???? well..........
in this universe, basically a huge fucking compendium of all my ocs i call the loververse (because most of my ocs i develop into a romance story), the government sets out the "redemption program" where they take criminals and make them go thru rehab and therapy, etc etc. and they're assigned to an agent and live with them. sometimes also work with the agent. they're assigned based on what department they work in and the criminal's charges. daniel went thru the same program and got assigned to miles (who works with drug busting and human trafficking. occasionally rip off gucci bags) and they became roommates (oh my god they were roommates).
basically the story i'm planning is a bit slice of life but then they get an assignment in miami cause they discovered a huge underground fentanyl drug cartel and they're gonna bust it. but at the same time. whoops. miles's sister has a wedding also in miami and miles's ex husband is there and its all chaos.
yk the funny thing is that i got the idea for the story thru a science assignment. "assess the image" of a guy running away holding a suitcase. i accidentally made out a whole ass story about the guy (who eventually became daniel) running away from the fbi cause he stole a bunch of mutant organs to make a huge nuclear weapon. and there's an fbi agent (obvs miles) trying to catch him and then being like very valjean/javert about it. and it somehow evolved to this.
was going to start ranting about my frog-obsessed fencing autistic oc who's also a vampire familiar but this post is already pretty long. thanks so much for asking i'm so happy. :,)

Brickclub 4.14.7 “Gavroche a profound calculator of distances”
The text assures us that Marius kissing Eponine’s forehead after death isn’t infidelity to Cosette and. You know what, he’s considered everything from speaking to Eponine to regarding Eponine as a person as infidelity to Cosette, this is progress, sort of.
He also takes himself and his letter out of her view out of respect, and respecting her in life doesn’t feel like an impulse that would have occurred to him. (Though of course his knowledge that she loved him has also changed.) There’s marginal progress here too, but also it’s possible that Marius is just capable of respecting a dead woman much better than he is a living one.
We hear Eponine’s motives, and they’re overwhelming jealousy. Which makes sense, and may be what’s about to be animating Valjean--we’ll be able to compare their mindsets soon.
She died with that tragic joy of jealous hearts that drag the being they love into death with them, saying, "Nobody shall have him!"
I’m still trying to compare and contrast her motives for killing herself and Marius with Marius’s motives for killing himself and Cosette; I wouldn’t say there’s *no* overlap, but it also feels pretty different. Eponine would be killing Marius because he’s separate from her and she hates and can’t change that fact; Marius would be killing Cosette... I mean in some sense it’s over being forced to be separate from her, but I think more importantly it would have been about an inability to see the two of them as separate at all. It wouldn’t be murder so no one else could have her--at least not consciously--so much as murder because his idea of her is so subsumed into his idea of himself that he assumes if it’s his decision to die, that must apply to her too. He couldn’t imagine her living, or wanting to live, without him.
Though now he’s dying without trying to kill her. Which, again, progress of a sort.
..Or, well. He’s no longer trying to kill her by force. (And, tbh, I’m not sure he would have considered murdering Cosette as being force; I’m not sure he knows she can have preferences separate from his.) The expectation of his letter (which basically just says, “It’s hopeless for us, I’ll be dead by the time you read this, my tragic spirit will be looking over your shoulder, bye”) may be that she will, of course, not hesitate to join him in death immediately. See also the part of the letter where he’s all “I KEEP my promises about dying if I can’t have you, because I love you that much, HINT HINT.”
I could be wrong about this one; I can’t really tell. I’m not sure I’d put it past him though.
Anyway, he wants to make sure he’s dead by the time she reads the letter, which is.. a choice. He doesn’t want her in suspense, he doesn’t want her to try anything to fix things. He wants a fait accompli.
Maybe he kinda knows at some level Cosette isn’t built the way he is in terms of suicide, or maybe he doesn’t. Either way, that whole thing about how he’s going to go die and his soul will be near her, etc feels very right for this kind of letter. It feels like a letter that makes perfect sense from a place of suicidal (and possibly homicidal) depression and sounds horrifyingly passive aggressive and cruel from any other point of view.
God, how would Cosette have reacted if she saw this letter? Not with the suicide Marius really might have been trying to peer pressure her into with it, but. It’s a horrifying letter, I’m so fucking glad the situation didn’t unfold the way Marius tried to make it unfold, which presumably would involve a grief-stricken Cosette bundled off to England a week from now with a secret letter about her lover’s death and no other information and believing there was no one on earth she could ever talk about it to.
Marius sends Gavroche off in order to save Gavroche, though of course his reasoning counts on Gavroche taking life debts as seriously as he himself does. Which is another instance of Marius not being able to model how differently other people’s approaches to the world is than his own--because, obviously, Gavroche is nothing at all like Marius.

2 8 33&34 for music asks <33
2. what's your favourite album
This is SO tough... but I think my all-time favourite is probably the soundtrack to the "Heathers" Broadway musical. I discovered it in 2019, and all the songs on it ended up at the top of my Spotify Wrapped list that year. I love showtunes in general but that album in particular is phenomenal; Barret Wilbert Weed has THE most incredible vocal range, and "Dead Girl Walking" just blows me away every time I listen. I also can't get over the potent combination of obsession and rage and borderline insanity in Ryan McCartan's rendition of "Meant to Be Yours", it gives me chills!
I do have to give an honourable mention to "Death of Bachelor" by Panic! at the Disco. I know it's not cool to like P!ATD's more recent stuff, but I honestly think that album is Brendon Urie's best work. It feels incredibly coherent as an album, and there is a sort of narrative - or at least character development - tracking from the first song to the last. I generally don't listen to albums as albums if they aren't musicals, but this is one that I almost always listen to in order and in one shot because it just feels wrong to do otherwise. I can't pick a favourite song because I love all of them equally!
8. tell me about your favourite band
As I answer these I realize how much of my musical taste hovers around musicals, lmao. I don't know that I have a favourite band per se, because my musical taste tends to be all over the map, and often I'll only like a few songs from a single artist. The only two non-musical artists where I've actually listened to a lot of their work deliberately are P!ATD and Set it Off.
BUT if we expand this to my favourite artist I'm going to cheat a little and talk about my favourite actor, Ramin Karimloo. I first came across him as the Phantom in the 25th anniversary performance of Phantom of the Opera at Royal Albert Hall, and I became OBSESSED. The raw charisma!!!! The energy!!!!! The amount of emotion he can pack into a line!!! I can't even pick a single moment in the show because every single one is so good. "Music of the Night" gives me goosebumps, though, and also the way he screams in the finale???? DELICIOUS. (At about 10:00-11:00 in this video if you want to know what I mean. I have A Thing for musicals where the lead male singers Just Fucking Scream at a certain point. "Jekyll and Hyde" did this A LOT.) Also the sexual tension in this performance he and Sierra Boggess did at the 2012 BRIT awards just takes me out at the knees. He got a TON of well-deserved critical acclaim for that performance. You used to be able to find the whole show on youtube, but it disappeared a little while ago and I haven't found another free version anywhere.
He also sang the part of Enjolras in the 25th anniversary concert of Les Mis, and is IMO the best Enjolras of all time, no exception. He played Gleb, the general guy, in the Anastasia musical, and even though I have mixed feelings about the musical as a whole his numbers, especially "Still/The Neva Flows (Reprise)" give me chills. One of the greatest nights of my life was getting to go to Toronto with my high school drama class to see him perform LIVE as Jean Valjean in the Mirvish Circuit Les Mis performances. I had a full crush just on his voice when I was in high school <3 And the craziest thing about him is that he has really minimal formal vocal training - his voice just DOES THAT!!! I'm in love with him I truly am
(A couple years ago when of the new guys at my work, who I'm now good friends with, casually mentioned that he knows Ramin Karimloo personally - his brother runs a children's theatre school in Toronto, and Ramin apparently loves to come in and work with the kids and then invite them to his shows. Anyways when he told me that I almost threw up.)
33 + 34. Do you collect CDs and/or vinyls
I don't, but I would if I had a little more disposable income. I'd LOVE to collect vinyl, really well-recorded vinyl has SUCH a gorgeous sound - one of my college roommates had a record player and a bunch of albums and I absolutely loved it. I used to collect CDs when I was in high school, and so I do have several kicking around - a lot of 80s stuff, which is what I was into then, so ABBA, Joan Jett, and the Beastie Boys. I also have a CD recording of "The Nutcracker" by George Balanchine that I love and listen to every Christmas season. Unfortunately I'm currently a hardcore spotify gal, if only because I listen to too much music to buy it all, but I do try to purchase the albums that I really love, especially with smaller artists.
send me some asks about music!

Hey yo I really like your name and I don't see enough of it, so if you want to could you give me some enjolsette siblings headcannons? Thanks, your blog always makes me feel happier :)
OH THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! I’m glad my blog makes you happy because same! I hope you enjoy these I had a lot of fun writing them, they’re fukin cute your honor
They get on really well and are super close now that they’re adults, but don’t get me wrong- They could FIGHT when they were younger. Siblings fight and that is fine. One time Cosette threw a hairbrush at Enjolras and it hit him in the face and he had a black eye for two weeks lmao. Another time they were fighting and Enjolras just grabbed a pair of scissors and just hacked a chunk of Cosette’s hair off. Valjean always tried to ground them when they fought but he was wayyy to soft on them both
They don't know much about their mother, except that according to their Papa she loved them very much. They know less than nothing about their birth father, and they're not in the least bit interested. Their papa is their father.
One time Enjolras was at an event for the ABC, and he came across a man called Felix Tholomyes. He seemed really familiar, Combeferre and Courfeyrac said the same. He showed Cosette a photo later that day. And yeah, she thought the same. Kind of weird.
Cosette moving abroad for a while, for Erasmus or something like that, (I'm thinking Berlin) and a few months after she leaves Enjolras books flights to come visit because she's been badgering him basically since she got there and ok, maybe he misses her kind of a lot
so he books his flights and they're both like AAAAHHHH and closer to the time Cosette starts sending him messages like AHHH ONLY FORTY DAYS TO GOOOO. AAAAHHH ONLY THIRTY NINE DAYS TO GOOOOO. AHHHH ONLY THIRTY EIGH- “Stop texting me or I’m gonna block your number”
So Enj flies out and for the next week the two of them hang out in the city and go to all the history museums and the lakes and hang out with Cosette’s friends from her accommodation and classes (”Cosette you didn’t tell us how hot your brother is” “Gross”) and go to different cool bars and clubs Cosette has found and Enjolras tries not to glare too severely at the weird kid Marius who is following Cosette around like a lovesick puppy and in exchange Cosette does not say anything when Enjolras hooks up with that one guy from her art history class even though she REALLY wants to bc she’s nosy af
Enjolras won’t admit it, but when he gets home, he counts the days until Cosette is back
They don’t live together, but they hang out at least once a week. Normally they go round to one of their apartments for dinner (take out, because neither of them can cook to save their life) They eat on the couch with some show on in the background and talk about their papa and their friends and the ABC and other stuff. Sometimes they’ll do facemasks or paint each other’s nails. They’re fucking cute.

Okay, back in May @isolatedphenomenon asked me if I had an les mis fic recs and I went "oh boy do I !" and then promptly fucked off and disappeared from tumblr for like 6 months...
Anyway on the off chance people are interested, here is my vastly too long list of  my favourite les mis fanfic (that I'm almost 100% sure I'll have accidentally missed some of my favourites off of...)
The vast majority of these are main pairing Enjolras/Grantaire, so I've put those first, divided into multi-chaptered and then one-shots. Below that will be other pairings!
Multi-chaptered
• Witch Boy Series : magic AU, starting with Grantaire solving Enjolras' curse - this is just Incredible world building which gets better as it goes on - my favourite is the Babet interlude
• World Ain't Ready : you know how fandoms tend to have a fic that is just associated with it ? in my experience, for les mis this is it - and well deserved ! High school, fake dating AU with some of the most engaging writing
• BE : Enjolras is dragged back into theatre production, helping Eponine put on a production of Hamlet - really love the characterisation in this, and this is really one of those modern AUs that actually feels like real life - really good writing
• After the End : the definitive apocalypse AU in my eyes - les amis are an underground resistance to the dystopian government - really wonderful characterisation of Grantaire and the amis
• You never have to wonder; you never have to ask. : I tend to find fic by scrolling through bookmarks of a pairing, which means I often see repeats; this is a fic that if I see I just re-read cause I know I'll enjoy it - the amis sparked a failed rebellion, and now 18 months later Grantaire ends up staying at Enjolras' after returning to Paris for Marius and Cosette's wedding
• Your Heart on Your Skin : Soulmate AU with flower tattoos marking important emotions and events - wonderful concept and world building
• Impatient to Be Free : Daughters of Bilitis AU - if that doesn't make you excited I don't know what else to say to convince you (aside from saying the author is a simply wonderful writer)
• You Dance Dreams : Okay. Not to be over dramatic, but this fic did genuinely qualitatively change my life, in that it was the first thing that got me looking up contemporary ballet and now that's like one of my favourite things and big hobby So. Also its really great writing; music/creative arts school les amis with Grantaire choreohraphing the ballet for Combeferre's opera, with a heavy emphasis on Grantaire realising he really never actually got over Enjolras
• philia : this one is an absolute classic to me, but not given nearly enough recognition - one of the more realistic college AUs ever written, and the writing of Grantaire is so good because it hits the perfect balance of sympathy and annoyance about his behaviour (that's a genuine compliment)
• Coffee Hooligans : fucking tragedy this never got properly finished, Enjolras leads the amis as social justice vigilantes and tries to hide the criminal bits of his life from R
• Fighting the Hurricane : Pacific Rim AU that's less an AU and more just placing the les mis characters in the Pacific Rim universe. Really good and riveting read, also super interesting depiction of Grantaire
• Weaving Olden Dances : Fairy AU - Grantaire "claims" Enjolras to prevent his execution - really good writing, love Grantaires characterisation
• Paris Burning : canon era (sort of) where cities have a physical being - Grantaire is Paris and becomes entangled in Enjolras' revolution - oh the world building is truly *chefs kiss*
• Euphoria is You For Me : Enjolras and Grantaire keep meet cuting in a wonderfully written Brooklyn - feels like a love letter to Brooklyn at times, and I really like the characterisation of Grantaire
• so please just fall in love with me this christmas : Enjolras works for the environmental company Grantaire volunteers at, and keeps getting secret gifts at Christmas - I sound a little like a broken record but the Grantaire characterisation is very good
• You Are the Moon : Wild West esque Space AU - Grantaire has to call on the amis to help rescue Valjean and Cosette, despite Grantaire leaving the amis 6 months before. On re-reading the Enjolras characterisation feels a little rushed, but overall fantastic story telling and the Grantaire arc is a Delight
• Pandemos : Enjolras is aphrodite, and seeks peace from all his suitors in R/Hephestus' cave
• Pining for You : Hallmark christmas romance - Grantaire returns home to work on his father's tree farm, and Enjolras is the lawyer helping prevent the farm being sold - cute as shit imo
• Once We're Kings : Fantasy AU - a country hosts a ball to marry Prince Enjolras and the rival country sends Grantaire as a fuck you - one of the best ways of doing Enjolras as a prince in a fantasy and just really nicely written
• Never Bitter and All Delicious : Fairy Godmother AU - yes really, yes its genuinely a very good read
• On One Condition : Fantasy AU - Enjolras is a bored knight who finally goes to check out the local dragon, which turns out to be Grantaire - I really like how they capture Enjolras' stubborn nature and it's such a well written soft growth of love between them
• That's How Easy Love Can Be : Les Amis work at a primary school; and its secret santa time! very fun portrayal of Enjolras
• The Lark and Her Lieutenants : re write of canon where Cosette is the leader of the revolution - just *chefs kiss*
• If You Tickle Us, Do We Not Laugh : Grantaire is Enjolras' secret android - really good at writing a relationship that's incredibly loving but just keeps being antagonistic and coming off wrong
One Shots
• True Colours : AU where you leave colours on the people important to you - Enjolras and Grantaire falling for each other is so soft and gently written its lovely, this is genuinely one of my favourites
• Keep It Kind, Keep It Good, Keep It Right : this one is so good to me, because it builds off my pet hatred of everyone assuming Enjolras doesn't care about (or at least actively show he cares about) his friends
• blooming : very soft post-dystopian utopia that has just a really wonderful sense of hope and light to me
• and the wall leaned away (or: The Pros and Cons of Tilling) : perfectly realised characterizations of the amis, Grantaire needs a date to her final year art exhibition - deals with anxiety over protest in a way that actually hits for me
• not just one of the crowd : R helps run a leftist bakery and bike repair shop - very cute characterisation, and I think more les mis fanfic should link to anarchist essays
• Lovesickness : Enjolras is an idiot and thinks he's sick rather than having a crush - the writing of Joly and Combeferre in this is some of my favourite depictions of these two
• If there's a rocket, tie me to it : absolutely heartbreaking sci-fi AU about the amis as doomed mecha pilots
• Where I Fall is Where I Land : Enjolras is a Roman commander as Rome's power is leaving England, and then meets the pict Grantaire (+ fun soulmark stuff !)
• You Started Foreign to Me : Enjolras moves to america and R is the overnight grocery clerk who helps her learn Spanish - cute fluffy lesbians with a wonderfully written driven Enjolras
• Love Is Touching Souls : very cute soulmate AU - and one I really love for really truly considering the implications of soul marks and creating historical lore around it
• Ten Years : R is a musician, and it non-linearly charts his relationship to Enj from high school to 10 years later
• put up with me then I'll make you see : Grantaire lives above Enjolras, and its christmas - I find it to have a very fun interpretation of pining Enjolras
• A Cat Called Trash Can : this was one of the first les mis fics I ever read (yes I know it says it was published in 2020, but I think it has to be a re-upload or something?) and it does still have a special place in my heart - Grantaire rescues a cat, but Enjolras is the only one with an apartment free to look after it
• Still I'm Begging to Be Free : inception AU where les amis have to rescue a sleeping R from his own brain
•I'm in it for You : cw: illness, cancer - R has cancer and is being a martyr about telling his friends so Enjolras drives him back from chemo
• walls come tumbling down : sky high au - a very good high school AU with the perfect level of campy superhero powers
• This brave new world's not like yesterday : Enjolras needs a job, so ends up working in a bowling alley with Grantaire and bonding
Enjolras/Grantaire/Combeferre
• In Defiance of All Geometry : les amis are a student co-op house, Enjolras and Combeferre are pining friends and Grantaire is the newbie
• Still the Same : this is very good writing and very compelling - if you can get over the (imo) plot hole of Enjolras working for the FBI. R was an art thief Enj put away and is briefly helping the FBI out, and Combeferre is Enjolras' husband
• To Kingdom Come : cw: war and PTSD from that, Enjolras and Combeferre are part of a group of refugees that have crossed into a more fantasy land, and Grantaire is a lone traveller from that land that attempts to help - that was a shit summary of this very emotional, wonderfully written fic about war and love in all forms
• Gonna need (a spark to ignite) : I always love a twist on a classic trope, and this is a very fun take on the soulmate AU - Enjolras loses feeling in his soul mark as a child, falls in love with Grantaire and then his soulmate, Combeferre, turns up
Eponine/Cosette
• Pretty Girls Don't Know the Things That I Know : simply stunning writing - perfect example of soft writing about a harsh world
• she knows her way around : Eponine and Cosette bond, ostensibly so Eponine can find out about her for Marius, and their interactions are so playful and realistic, its wonderful
• always find me floating on oceans : Cosette stows away on Eponine's pirate ship - I do always have a soft spot for eposette fics (not just cause I ship it) because they truly characterise Cosette in a really considered and interesting way
• There's No Making Love : I'm putting this under eposette even though there is some significant enjolras/grantaire content, because the Cosette characterisation is so fun and cute
• round and round again : this fic really beautifully translates Cosette's bad childhood and then isolated teenage years, and the impact that would have on her as an adult into a modern AU
• Underwater Thunderheards : this is based off the book The Scorpio Races, and is just a really nice short fic  about longing
• How To Change The World Without Taking Power : Marius has a crush on Cosette and she's tried being polite and subtle in turning him down, so just ends up fake dating Eponine instead
• blood red fruit and poison's kiss : Snow White AU - Cosette as Snow White
• The Winters Cannot Fade Her : Snow White Au 2.0 - Eponine as Snow White - this was written as a pair to the one above which is just so cute to me
• marriage à la mode : Cosette and Eponine run a bridal shop together and it's very cute !
• Temporary Hold : I personally find this a really fun and very unique take on Cosette - with exams coming up she decides she needs to get laid on the reg and so hits up Eponine to act as if they're already long term girlfriends
Combeferre/Courfeyrac
• better than you had it : fake dating but kick it up an emotional notch - Courf and Ferre pretend to still be together after breaking up for a family event
• take flight, come near : nice and cute low fantasy, where Combeferre runs a dragon sanctuary and Courf finds an injured dragon
Rare Pairs
• The Future's Owned by You and Me : cute Enjolras/Feuilly with actual radical politics and real life organising difficulties and wins
• First Dates and Other Dangers : Combeferre and Grantaire agree to go on a blind date and it's awkward until it isn't - just cute !
• after midnight : Combeferre has insomnia and meets Grantaire in various all night fast food chains
• as you are : Bahorel and Jehan getting ready together
• Almost Romantic : Jehan works at a museum, and takes Combeferre on a little tour
• Understudy : Jehan/Combeferre, with Combeferre's insecurities regarding being seen as second best to Enjolras
• Here There Be Dragons : Courf/Enj/Ferre - Courf and Enj are superheroes and Ferre is the doctor that patches them up
• To Let it Occur (Laisser Faire la Nature) : Feuilly has a stupidly long stopover in Paris and meets Enjolras
• rule of three : Courf/Enj/Ferre as spies and loving boyfriends
• Good Rhetoric : snapshots of cute cuddly courf/enj/ferre
• subluxate, dislocate, replace : found family and chronic illness with Joly/Bossuet/Musichetta
• Strike stone, strike home (like lightning) : so this fic took one minor piece of lore about Tolkien's dwarves and made a beautiful j/b/m fic from it
• Almost Inevitable : Bahorel/Feuilly friends-with-benefits
• god only knows (what I'd be without you) : Bahorel/Feuilly with a closeted Feuilly and a beautiful Feuilly and Eponine friendship

Possible prompt(?) :
So, Established Relationship/Friendship Valvert, get into an argument, or just by instinct, Javert calls Jean Valjean 24601 and like just gets to witness all efforts they made of ever getting closer disapear ✨
Thanks for sending in a prompt!
Ouch!
Mistakes
He had no filter.
He had no filter, and he hated it.
Always saying the wrong things, going off at the mouth, saying things he didn’t mean, saying things on accident...
That’s what lead to this.
That’s why he was sitting on the couch like a child; head in his hands and tears streaming down his face.
Jean had left the, door slamming loudly behind him. The house was quiet, unlike it had been less than ten minutes ago. If he was being honest, Javert didn’t know if he preferred the dead silence of the sounds of yelling more. He didn’t know which one he hated more.
Screw up.
He’d been called it his whole life; by his father, by his superiors, by his fellow guards, by strangers on the street...
Now he saw what they meant. Now he knew what they meant.
He hadn’t said that number in years. Three whole years. He never even thought of it.
So how come he said it?
They rarely argued, and whenever they did it was usually over something that was resolved by the next day or with kisses and soft apologies. This time was different. This time, things took a turn for the worse.
After a few moments of silent crying, Javert let a sob escape his throat. He couldn’t take this.
Jean was gone fire nearly an hour now. Perhaps this was it; perhaps he had left for good. What would Javert do? He no longer owned his apartment as he was living with Valjean, and he certainly didn’t have his own money to buy one. Where would he go? Certainly when...if...Jean came back, he’d be asked to leave.
Moving his hands away, something shiny caught the tearful man’s eye.
His ring.
The ring Jean had given to him.
He hadn’t taken it off since he got it. He still remembered that night; Valjean taking his hands in his, telling him how much he loved him and pressing kisses to his knuckles. He gave Javert that ring, acknowledging that they couldn’t marry, but he didn’t care. He loved him more than anything; he made sure to tell him that. He made sure to tell him that he’d never leave.
How ironic.
Staring at the ring, Javert thought to himself. With shaky hands, he removed the golden band; holding it in a tight fist once it was off. He sat for a moment, emotions running rampant. What was he going to do?
“Don’t you fucking take that off.”
He looked up.
It was Jean.
“How the hell did you get in,” whispered the Inspector, trying to appear as if he weren’t just crying. His red eyes and tear streaked face gave it all away; and who knows how long Valjean had been standing there.
“I came in through the back.”
Both men sat in silence, an uncomfortable stillness filling the room. Javert cleared his throat.
“I guess I’ll go get my stuff.”
“...What?”
“Y-you’re asking me to leave, are you not?”
“When the hell did I ever say that?”
“I mean, it’s pretty fucking obvious t-“
Valjean cut him off with a frustrated, under-his-breath “oh my God.” He sat down next to Javert, holding out his hand.
“Ring.”
Great. He wanted it back. What a surprise.
Tearfully, the Inspector reached into his pocket and pulled out the band, reluctantly handing it over. He closed his eyes, waiting for the door to open and slam before he’d be alone.
Instead, he felt Valjean take his hand.
Confused, Javert watched as the man placed the ring back upon his finger, holding his hand in both of his when it was done.
“W-“
“I told you, I’m not leaving.”
“But-“
“But what, Vert? Hmm?”
“Why do you even want me here,” spat Javert, hand still held in Jean’s. “All I ever do is screw up; that’s all I’ve ever done! My whole life- no matter how hard I fucking tried! I can never do anything right! I can’t even fucking die without y-“
“Are you done?”
Valjean’s voice was loud, but it wasn’t harsh. The Inspector looked up, eyes wide.
“We’re not even going to go there,” said Jean, shaking his head softly. “We’re not talking about that. You’re not a screw up-“
“I literally just-“
“You’re not a screw up. Just...stop saying that, would you? Look; I’m sorry for leaving-“
“You shouldn’t be the one ap-“
“Stop- just let me finish, please? I’m sorry for leaving. I should’ve thought before I just...got up and left. I was mad a-and I wasn’t thinking- I’m sorry. I’m sorry for ever giving you a reason for thinking I’d truly leave, because I never would. I would never, ever leave you; please know that.”
Now Jean was blinking back tears as well. Biting his lip, Javert managed to meet his gaze.
“...I’m sorry for- I’m sorry that I...I’m so sorry-“
He was cut off when Valjean’s hand came to cradle his face, eyes looking down to his.
“I know.”
They sat there quietly, staring into each other’s eyes. Eventually, Valjean held up the hand that was still intertwined with Javert’s.
“I’m not leaving you. Ever. I don’t care how low you think of yourself, how many fights we get in, how many times you get hurt at work-“
Both of them couldn’t help but laugh at that.
“-...I still love you. Always have, always will. No matter what.”
“...I love you too.”
Javert’s voice broke as he spoke. Thankfully, Jean’s wasn’t much better. The older opened his arms and took the man in an embrace, cradling his head and rubbing his back. Javert let himself melt into the hug, face rested in the crook of Valjean’s neck.
“I love you.”
“I love you, too. So much.”
They fell asleep like that, held in each other’s arms on the couch. Hopefully Toussaint wouldn’t come down in the middle of the night, waking them both up with her yelling to go sleep upstairs properly; but wether she did or didn’t, they’d still be with each other.
They’d make sure of that.

I’d like to thank Lady Aphrodite for knocking some sense into me and giving me motivation to finish writing this fic. Writers block is a bitch, but Lady Aphrodite wasn’t about to let me doubt myself.
Hope you enjoyed!

Random Thot #46,853
I had a health exam for my upcoming new job and put my two weeks in for my current one, so I’m rewarding my neurodivergent ass-brain with this.  Sit tight and enjoy.
46,853: I’m half-convinced that Edelgard is like the Soul Series’ Alexandra sisters and daughter when it comes to her combat ability - or rather, lack thereof.  Unlike Claude, Dimitri, and Byleth, who all explicitly received combat training as children, Edelgard likely did not.  The tools given to her are what likely allow for her to fight at all - heck, they may even do a bit of the fighting for her.  How else can a noodle-armed womanlet like her wear all that armor and heft that axe?
Tumblr media
(Also, how the eff does this dress make clanking armor sounds when she walks in the game despite this dress having like no armor whatsoever)
To begin with, we have in-game factoids of her stat caps being the second highest in the game (390 when combined, with Cyril only beating her by 5 points due to his Aptitude skill), and she even has a magic cap that’s not only on-par with other magically-inclined units (72), but it’s actually better than some of them (Dorothea and Linhardt, who are both dedicated mage types, have caps of 61 and 66, respectively, while Manuela, who tends to get placed in Faith Magic-aligned classes despite being a hybrid unit, has a piddling cap 48).  She even has a quirky but feasible spell list for both magic types (Fire/Bolganone/Luna Lambda/Hades Omega for Reason, and Heal/Nosferatu/Recover/Seraphim for Faith, which is one of her banes, mind you).  I imagine this is the work of the experiments that gave her her version of the Crest of Flames - after all, the 2020 DREAM interview noted that the Hresvelg children were given a more “refined” version of the experiments the Ordelias had.  The refinement isn’t just reflected in-game with caps and magic too; Edelgard is also more robust in terms of health, whereas Lysithea is prone to bouts of weakness and illness.  In-game, she has poor Luck and Strength, and the single lowest HP cap of all the playable units at 48.  And while this one is admittedly conjecture, Edelgard doesn’t hint that her lifespan was drastically cut, as she gets to live a long life in all of her endings.  Even in her Crest-heavy ending with Hanneman or her healthcare-related ending with Manuela don’t mention that she had one or both of her Crests taken out.  Lysithea, on the other hand, is extensively motivated by the fact that she doesn’t have many years left, and it’s only in two endings (Lorenz, Balthus) where she’s able to live fairly long without removing her Crests; The rest either have her dying young or being able to live long only after her Crests are taken out.
Now what of her combat abilities?  Let’s turn to the source of where this silly thot came from.
For the uninitiated, Sophitia Alexandra, a fighter who’s been in the Soul Franchise since its very first game, did not grow up as a dedicated combatant like the other fighters - she was an ordinary baker living in Athens during the late 16th Century when Greece was part of the Ottoman Empire.  When she was bathing in a lake one day, she received a message from Hephaestus himself in that she has a divine destiny to destroy the cursed blade Soul Edge, and he gifts her with a divinely crafted short sword and shield in order to fulfill her mission.  While she does gain training in Athenian combat styles, a lot of her power and capabilities are tied to her weapon set, which are named the Omega Sword and Elk Shield.  Her younger sister Cassandra would follow suit in SoulCalibur II, actually going out of her way to steal the same holy armaments Sophitia used in Soul Edge and SoulCalibur I before getting her own specially empowered set.
Tumblr media
(Sophitia Alexandra)
And Pyrrha, Sophitia’s daughter in SoulCalibur V, takes it to new heights.  Per a data book, the timid, mistreated Pyrrha has absolutely no combat experience, not even in self-defense.  While Sophitia and Cassandra were able to train themselves into formidable soldiers outside of their divine weapons’ influences, this is not true for Pyrrha.  If it were not for the sword and shield Pyrrha wielded (which is the same exact set Sophitia wielded before her passing), her clumsy attacks and timid guard stances would amount to ineffectual, useless flailing.
Tumblr media
(Info about Pyrrha’s fighting style from the SCV data book)
Back to the Egg.  Now it’s made abundantly clear that while Dimitri’s Jean Valjean-levels of raw strength heavily stem from his Crest, he’s also from the land where, in lieu of milk and honey, there’s extreme sports jock training in heavy armor in the dead of night with boulders for weights and weapon mastery.  Dimitri loves to train, and it’s a big aspect of his character.  The tritagonist of his route is also one of his combat trainers, and he’s done that job for three generations’ worth of Faerghus royalty, with his ending hinting that he keeps doing it for one more.  I imagine that even without the Crest of Blaiddyd, Dimitri would still be extremely strong and formidable, he’d just have to actually exert himself a little when saving some poor soul from a runaway cart.
Tumblr media
(Just in case the savior imagery wasn’t clear enough with Dimitri, he even did lift a cart the way eventual saint Jean Valjean did in the book/musical)
Claude is far more in favor of covert combat, and his own Crest is more defensive than offensive, but he’s no slouch either, having had a renowned war general serve as his combat instructor since childhood.  He’s from a kingdom that, much like Faerghus, values the way of the warrior and prides itself on the strength of its people.  His hidden talent, tying to wyvern mastery, is in friggin axes, and he’s also shown to be adept enough with a sword at various points.  Plus there’s the fact that he was abused and mistreated by his Almyran family, complete with his father plopping him on a horse and making the horse ride off with him backwards with no safety net as a form of punishment - Claude tells Hilda that there was a “trick” in how he survived that.  As any horse jockey can attest to, you need raw muscle in every part of your body in order to really ride one, and I imagine that’s doubly true for your local albino wyvern that’s decked out in Ottoman visual puns.  Plus learning how to be crafty and protecting oneself more covertly undoubtedly contributed to his combat abilities too.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(I mean you’d have to be shredded if you can pull off the Parthian shot on a fucking flying dragon.  61 Strength cap my ass.)
Byleth, as we know, grew up as a mercenary to the point of detriment.  There’s no need to go into extensive detail as to how Jeralt sacrificed almost everything else in exchange for contributing to Byleth’s combat abilities without being abusive and cruel, but even if you took away Byleth’s self-insert aspects, they’d likely bear a passing resemblance to Rei Ayanami in terms of behavior and attitude - An intended vessel/Avatar for a divine being from one end; Conditioned for little more than combat from another end.  Kind of a gloomy picture before she starts to express herself better and actually bond with other people meaningfully.
Tumblr media
(At least she’s cute as a button.  Kinda like Rei.)
But where does that leave Edelgard?  It’s a big question mark.  There’s no mention of her growing up with any kind of combat training, unlike the other three.  Heck, if tea time, Crimson Flower, and Heroes quotes are anything to go by, Edelgard grew up living a carefree lifestyle prior to the Insurrection.  She got to stuff her face with sweets and play with teddy bears and both dote and be doted on by her siblings.  Being child number 9 in her current generation, combat training and political studies likely weren’t major priorities for her, and since it’s speculated that Ionius favored her mother, she was likely lavished and spoiled by him.  After all, he expresses grief for her specifically when she inherits the throne from him, not the rest of her siblings.
Tumblr media
(Even the official merchandise notes how childish Edelgard is)
Tumblr media
(This is all after she literally kickstarts her war, by the way).
While there’s varying degrees of elaborate flair that the Lords all wield their weapons with, Edelgard’s regular strikes with an axe feel far less rigid and more informal, and she’ll spin around her axe like it’s some kind of prop.  Her default battle stance isn’t even remotely protective and quite impractical; Dimitri’s stance with a lance is both of these things, while Claude’s arrow-twirling is a real-life exercise that’s done to keep the wrist flexible.  While she does refine her axe skills come Part II, she’ll still do things like throw her massive shield ten feet in the air for a critical hit.
Tumblr media
(Seriously what even is this why is your hand out like that)
There’s even some proof of this: In her study request for axes and heavy armor, Edelgard will even acknowledge that the only reason she can likely keep up and wear heavy armor at all is because of her Crests.  And unlike Dimitri and Claude, who can get lesson plans for their respective Hidden Talents once they’re mastered (Horse riding for Dimitri, axes for Claude), Edelgard doesn’t get a lesson plan for Reason Magic, which is her Hidden Talent, so she likely didn’t get any kind of formal education surrounding magic either.
Tumblr media
(She has a similar quote in Heroes that’s even more explicit about this.)
The closest hint we get in Edelgard maybe having a hint of training as a child is in her Supports with Ferdinand, and even then, there’s no clear cut hint noting that his failures in beating her were combat-based.  She’s able to one-hit KO him in their B Support, but it’s locked to Part II and at this point she’s been both riding on the power highs of her Crests along with actually taking combat seriously.  She even says that their difference in skill level isn’t that great.
Tumblr media
(Should’ve used Swift Strikes, Ferdie)
What’s more, in addition to all of those enhancements, she not only spends a lot of Part I in a custom set of armor that only archaic technology from the Agarthans can make, but they also made her a custom Relic that’s tailor-made to her specifications.  The other Relics as well as the Sacred Weapons, being over a thousand years old, still require their wielders to train in order to wield them properly, and in the case of the Relics, their potential cannot be fully tapped into unless the wielder’s Crest matches the Relic they’re wielding.  There’s also that particular safety issue, per what happens with Sylvain’s brother Miklan.  But this is not the case with Aymr, which is brand new, has a mismatched Crest that doesn’t negatively affect Edelgard, and requires the Agarthan tech-compatible Agarthium to fix, not the Umbral Steel that’s used to fix both the Heroes’ Relics and other Crest Stone weapons like the Vajra-Mushti.  The Aymr’s specific Combat Art even emulates the oft-broken Galeforce skill from Awakening and Fates.  It feels like that Aymr in particular is the Edelgard what Hephaestus’ swords and shields are to the Alexandra family.
Now I don’t really think that an Edelgard who’d be stripped of her Crest of Flames, the Amyr, or her special Flame Emperor armor, would be as hapless as Pyrrha would be without her mother’s sword and shield.  I imagine she likely started to do some kind of formal combat training once the experiments were done with, not just to kickstart her dreams of imperial conquest, but also to protect herself anyway after everything that happened; She’s also the only Hresvelg heiress of her generation left.  There’s also her natural Minor Crest of Seiros to consider.  But if you stripped all that away from her, then her ability to fight probably would come off as useless flailing to the other three more experienced combatants.
All those cakes and that lack of muscle would at least catch up to her, anyway.

Another Opinion No One Asked For About Les Mis
Hi! Don’t mind me this is just word vomit.
TL;DR: Michael Ball is an INCREDIBLE Javert and Russel Crowe wasn’t as bad as everyone says
I LIKE Russell Crowe’s portrayal of Javert. Does he have a great singing voice? No, it’s just marginally better than Pierce Brosnan in Mama Mia.
I LOVE Michael Ball’s portrayal of Javert. First time I heard about him playing the part opposite Alfie (loml and resident tiny badass opera man), I was really unsure about it. I own all of Boe-Ball’s albums together and I have always joked that in some of them, you can’t tell they’re duets because Alfie is so damn loud and Michael (AT LEAST IN THESE SONGS) is more of a crooner.
I love the staunch, rigid Javerts: Norm Lewis, Phillip Quast, Roger Allam, Earl Carpenter.
BASICALLY, I love the character of Javert. But hear me out. There is a wild difference between playing him as a living breathing version of the lithograph presented in the novel, and playing him as a very human, very misguided, eventually very, VERY broken victim of the system.
That’s what I liked firstly about Russell’s version. I mean he’s got a naturally sad looking face, first of all, and he played the humble servant of the law in front of Madeleine especially well. Obviously, because he’s Russell Crowe, he also did the intense lashings-out of anger and violence very well. Even up against Hugh Jackman he seems like the kind of dude that could make you bleed if you crossed him the wrong way. Was his the elegant, “Bang. A pistol shot”, commanding figure that the confident, unbroken Javert is? No, there’s nothing particularly elegant about him. But I like him, and I think his chemistry with Hugh is the sort needed for a meaningful examination of that relationship.
NOW. Michael Freaking Ball. Lil baby afroed Marius. The cartoon golden retriever to Alfie Boe’s little-dog-with-a-big-bite. He seems wonderful, I love his dimples, he’s adorable-- very Marius, but Javert?? I was doubtful. I didn’t KNOW that this motherfucker could bust out a big voice when he wanted to. I’d never heard that from him. But again, he and Alfie are so wonderful together and they REALLY play off one another’s tension (i.e. Alfie as JVJ at Toulon, yikes). So I listened to some of the cast recording from their 2019 staged concert before even considering watching it. I didn’t even take it easy and listen to Stars first, oh no. I went right for the Soliloquy.
BITCH I CRIED. I sat on the end of my bed with tears in my eyes, full goosebumps on my arms, breathless. I love this character, I’ve always hated the suicide scene, but this one GOT TO ME. His voice breaks, he runs out of breath, there are tears in the back of his throat which don’t make the notes pretty but it WORKS. THAT is a man on the literal precipice, realizing everything he’s done with his life, not only the obsession with this one man, but the pillars of his certainty that Valjean was as hellbent on revenge as he was, that JVJ HAD to be evil, had to be as mad and driven and bloodthirsty as he was; this all was a lie. He was forgiven, in a soft, kind voice, where he expected a knife. He was so certain of the narrow, black and white world he lived in, and it was all cut out from under him. The truth BROKE him, completely.
Other Javerts have shown this happening really well. Earl Carpenter is one of my favorites, because even through his biting proper English accent you can hear his desperation. But it is a whole other level to completely break down, to somehow sing-scream those last few lines, to reach out into the void he’s singing about and try and grasp it; Michael fuckin’ DID IT. Finally watching the concert fully cemented this for me. He aged himself. He choked himself. He looked like he was in immense physical pain, and goddamn it, it was good. I’m dramatic as fuck but I’m not afraid to tell you I was physically shaking by the end of it.
Am I partial to the broad-shouldered, barn-door Javerts? Absolutely. Does the new staged concert make me contemplate never watching the movie again? Possibly (sorry Hugh). And I don’t have a particular point to make with this long-ass post except to say, everyone is entitled to their opinions and their favorites (just dear god, just disagree and don’t shit on ANY of the casts), and uh, yeah, this is mine. Well done Michael Ball, you sneaky bastard.
