Sorry if this is a dumb question, but what exactly do you mean by orphans in your last post? Like the lost both parents kind of orphan or some other type? I've loved all of your weird supernatural nations art and headcanons (really scratches an insatiable itch about their natures) and I was wondering if I was missing anything.

Hey there!! It's not a dumb question at all! First off, thank you for the compliments!! I'm really glad that you like my silly little headcanons ;w; This is gonna be a little bit of a long one, so everything will be under the cut!

Before I get into what Orphans are specifically, I feel like it's important to give a little bit more background on my meta! In my headcanon, nations are called the Devai ( from the tagalog word Diwata and its root sanskrit form, Devata. devas is the singular form of the word ). "Nation" is just one of the many names that humans refer to them by. The Devai were created by The Mother, who embodies the Earth's spirit. They were made to serve as protectors and knowledge keepers of the humans the Mother grew quite fond of.

The original group of Devai, known as "The Ancients" or "The First Ones" to contemporary nations were made from the Earth, but the ones who came after them could be created either by being born to two devai parents or by being born to a devai / human pair. A devas whose parents are both devai are normally already born bonded to a particular community and are immortal, while those who are half-human don't become immortal unless they are "turned".

Anyone with devai heritage somewhere down the line can be turned, but the more distantly related you are means you're far less likely to be turned. Devai who have been turned are called "newborns". These newborns have to be mentored by another devas and taught how to adjust to their new life as immortals bonded to a community of people. If a newborn isn't mentored within a year of being turned, they turn into what's known as an "Orphan".

Orphans, also called the "Misguided" or the "Maladjusted" (the latter is considered to be a derogatory term, however), never fully settle into their new identity. They suffer from a whole host of problems which includes having trouble differentiating between their own thoughts and the inner voice of their people. They often lack a grounding sense of purpose and are overly reliant on humans to define their sense of self. Orphans also have great difficulty regulating themselves in battle, which has unfortunately made them notorious for being indiscriminate killers among their kind and susceptible to exploitation by humans.

They are also vulnerable to the creatures that lurk in the spirit realm. An important skill mentors teach newborns is how to create a "mindspace". This place acts as a barrier between a Devai's mind and the broader spirit realm, which is considered a dangerous place to be even for the likes of them. An orphan's mindspace is poorly constructed, which means creatures from the other side can often creep in. Not all of them are harmful and some can even be tamed and adopted as a sort of familiar, hence why Rahela has her lil many eyed worm creature!

Orphans are not viewed favorably by other Devai. They are often pitied at best and outright reviled at worst. Some known Orphans in my world are Gilbert (Prussia), Rahela (Romania), Ezekiel (Knights Hospitaller), and Sanson (Knights Templar). Gilbert is much better adjusted now compared to how he was when he was a kid thanks to Reiner becoming a mentor to him later in life. Rahela, on the other hand, insists that she has learned to live with her condition and doesn't seek to be mentored.

guys, i think the hermits are going to accidentally start a prank war again. because just like last time, a game of telephone has begun. first, false made iskall's build into ''false beans,'' her shop from the previous season. however, to give herself plausible deniability, she signs it with "love, Joel. x" due to his username, smallishbeans.

next, iskall sees this, and completely believes it. he thinks it was joel who pranked him, and as he says to pearl while showing off the sign, which he kept even after tearing the prank down, "joel gave me a kiss." in his most recent video, he pranks joel by sending him loads of anonymous messages in order to completely spam and fill his inbox, preventing him from getting any more mail, with notes such as "thinking about you. x"

of course, joel is going to have absolutely no context for this, because he didn't make the initial prank. so who is joel going to assume sent him all those messages while he was away on holiday? well, i have a guess.

So, I woke up to this shit on the Twit app and I've only hit on this issue before, but today I'm digging in. Colorism is something that is not addressed often enough, but intersected within that and even more rarely spoken about, is the issue of featurism. The young actress above just got cast as Juliet in the latest big staged prestige production of Romeo and Juliet, opposite Tom Holland. And as usual the blue-checks, everybody else including "black", and even Black regulars are all-in on the cruelty.

...But I want to breakdown a nuance that is too often skipped over when this happens. The two people named with her, give away the featurism game, here; a particularly nasty form of often internalized racism. I guarantee if the young actress looked like this?

She'd definitely still get racist attacks, but the particularly nasty shit I'm seeing attacking her looks wouldn't come. In fact, I could see some people thinking they are defending her with "but she's pretty!" or more specific... "obviously she's mixed" comments. -Something pretty much every Black woman with features that don't align with a narrow perception of blackness hear often (and we'll get to why I specified women in a minute). And don't get it twisted...

These aren't exclusively nor standard white features either (see: the many ethnic features w/in white ethnic groups that also get hit to a lesser and non-racialized degree such as large "hook" and/or Romanesque noses for example, which is definitely about anti-semitism, anti-Romani sentiment, and other disparaged/discriminated against ethnic minorities in Europe) and yes, blue eyes are naturally occurring within non-mixed and dark-skinned Black people due to a mutation called Waardenburg syndrome. But there is a REASON why fetishizing even certain ethnic features within the African continental diaspora has been a thing for a long time...i.e. "the dopest Ethiopian" from the Tribe Called Quest lyric is pictured as this:

...despite them all being Ethiopians of various tribal ethnicities.

A wide-nose, a tighter curl, coil, or zig-zag pattern of hair, fuller lips and often, but not always (because I've given examples above where features "mitigate" skin color) darker skin. Zendaya is grouped with Tracey and Francesca Amewudah-Rivers, despite being both lighter in skin color and having a Black parent and a white parent because her nose isn't what has become the standard surgical look...that too many celebs have. This includes the ones who got so-called "ethnic" work or just a slight 'refinement'. No, her nose is born w/it, made for that good African air, as I call it. Nostrils prominent, nose bridge wide:

I went make-up free as well, because even make-up practices these days, go for that narrowing highlight technique i.e. just below it's subtle.

Sza is a an example of it taken to extremes, even with the Hollywood standard "ethnic" refinement she did get.

The thing is... I don't blame or attack her for that. Because you see above that is just a taste of what happens. Lil' Kim was relentlessly bullied by the men in her life for her ethnic features for her whole life...and that is why she is off-limits to this day for me when it comes to all the work she's had done.

...And this is where I explain why I specified men being mostly exempt. It's because "Blackness" including all the physical features associated with it, is by default masculinized. ...Which is why Idris Elba is considered one of the most handsome men in the world, w/o the caveats that even Lupita Nyong'o often gets. Nobody calls Samuel L. Jackson ugly. He is even idolized and fetishized by a specifically white male gaze for how culturally "Black" he is perceived to be for all the wrong reasons, his signature "motherfucka" for example (and I could go off on a whole other tangent here, but digressing). All this to say... Featurism sucks. It's not talked about enough. Blackness in all variations is Beautiful. Tracy Chapman looking as young she does?? Hell, mark it down to both her dark skin (a natural UV protector) and not messing with her given features (and being a lesbian, men will age you. lol -I got jokes-):

sorry sometimes i think about mako and my heart hurts so much. this kid raised himself and his brother on the streets in homelessness and utter poverty from eight through fifteen, promptly after seeing the violent death of his mother and father. he turned to the triple threats because they couldn't survive as a pair of wretched kids without any adult support, and the environment forced him to turn into the exact character that killed his parents in a terrible twist of irony. and after sheer-fucking-luck hits and they aren't homeless anymore, their livelihood wavers on the outcome of what's a literally game to everyone but them; and after things are finally starting to look up and their team is going places and things just might be okay, his gradually stabilizing world unceremoniously expands and everything goes to shit.

and the city that chewed him up and spat him back out, ruined him as a child and took away his ability to stay afloat in a true sense of normalcy as an adult — when it's on the verge of destruction and falling to pieces before his eyes, he gives himself to save it with the full expectation to die. he went from the kid who didn't and couldn't care about anything outside of himself and his brother, to finding redemption for his younger self in his police work despite its injustice against him, to willingly sacrificing himself to a world that had never loved him.

he's a desperate people pleaser, socially and emotionally stunted for the adult he had to be as a kid, unable to navigate interpersonal relationships easily yet still trying his damned hardest. he's intensely and entirely devoted to the things that matter to him and for so long it was only him, bolin, and ensuring their survival — yet by the end, that devotion has expanded to protecting the rest of the world. he starts out entirely self-reliant and ends in trusting the people he cares about to know their own needs, to be able to take care of themselves, to be okay without him despite having spent so much of his life defined by his role in others' well-being.

just. what the fuck i'm such a big fan of this fictional guy and i'm unashamed about it at this point. also let him cry please (if you won't i'll do it i'll let him cry)

How his family had plans for him that misaligned with how he wanted to live his life with the one he truly loved.

Kaeya, who was left in the city of freedom. The same man who frequently drinks with the very archon his countrymen would have wanted to see dead.

Do you see how it seems like the tables have turned? How the world turned upside-down with just 1 cataclysmic event?

Kaeya is always contradictory to the common definition of the words he is described as on the surface. He is a cryo user who loves the summer season. He is a knight who schemes and plots in the dark. He is a Khaenri'ahn who wants the freedom of Mondstadt.
