hq x pokémon: karasuno edition

IN HONOR OF THE FUCKING FANTASTIC NEWS WE HAVE BEEN BLESSED WITH HERE ARE MY HCS ON THE POKEMON HQ CHARACTERS WOULD HAVE IN THEIR TEAM, STARTING WITH THE KARASUNO FIRST YEARS

(notes: first pokemon listed is their main partner, not everyone would be down to have a full team, pls come talk to me if you have any ideas bc i plan on writing for every single team LMAO)

hinata shouyo

rapidash: it was a hard toss-up between arcanine or rapidash for main partner, but rapidash has better speed stats and i imagine most of hinata’s team would be based around that. plus, rapidash is more lean and compact in the way hinata is!! (also the thought of little hinata and ponyta growing together and giving tiny natsu rides, I LOVE IT)

talonflame: i don’t wanna hear shit about talonflame being a Gen 6 pokémon, it’s one of the fastest flying-types that can literally blaze fire in the sky. try looking me in the eye and telling me that it’s not perfect for hinata . . . you can’t

greninja: i wanted something that could match up to his “ninja shouyo” persona LMAO, and i thought greninja was a perfect fit! it also balances out the two other fire-types on his team. doesn’t understand why kageyama’s typhlosion and tsukki’s sandslash don’t like it or each other

lopunny: type-wise, lopunny isn’t what most would expect for hinata, i think, but it has impressive leg strength and speed stats and could definitely keep up with the others

jolteon: i just think hinata with a jolteon would be badass

muk: hinata “i sprouted from the concrete” shouyo would DEFINITELY love muk, its pokedex entry describes it as gathering where people throw out trash and hinata knows that feeling! sure, it’s the slowest on his team, but that doesn’t matter when it tries so hard!

kageyama tobio

lucario: a pokémon that evolves through FRIENDSHIP??? for KAGEYAMA TOBIO??? it’s more likely than you think! since lucario can read emotions, it probably wouldn’t care how snappy kageyama is on the surface - it knows its trainer means well and stands by him. it would help kageyama to have a partner who doesn’t doubt him in the slightest, and lucario is perfect for that

umbreon: i mostly chose umbreon for the aesthetic LMAO, plus kageyama radiates dark-type vibes

corviknight: tbh idk much about it since i’m not caught up on galar, but i saw fanart of kageyama with one and i thought it fit so well! the pokédex says it “reigns supreme” in the sky, which definitely suits kageyama’s kingly nature

glalie: other than dark-types, i think ice-types are also fitting for kageyama! glalie has a mean face but is a total sweetheart, and kageyama can definitely relate

typhlosion: explosive just like kageyama is, mean and snappy and probably has to be kept in line by lucario LMAO. doesn’t get along with hinata’s greninja or tsukki’s sandslash

mimikyu: kageyama with a mimikyu would melt my heart . . . it’s literally described as a lonely pokémon and kageyama knows loneliness all too well

tsukishima kei:

claydol: since tsukki works in a museum post-timeskip, i thought a pokémon of mysterious history would suit him well, and i can totally see tsukki doing investigative archaeology work with a claydol to help him. has been with him since it was a baltoy, grew up with yamaguchi and hariyama

alolan sandslash: i think the alolan sandslash would really fit tsukki! a prickly pokémon compatible with his prickly personality. probably doesn’t get along with kageyama’s typhlosion or hinata’s greninja. a lot of ruins/historical sites exist in icy terrain in pokémon, so sandslash would be great to have on hand. likes picking fights the most LMAO

carracosta: of course tsukki would possess one of the fossil pokémon. sometimes you need to dive deep, so a water-type turtle pokémon with great defense against any surprise attacks would be a perfect match!

ampharos: its tail is useful for lighting up dark corridors that they have to explore, and ampharos is probably the most enthusiastic about museum work besides claydol. the peacemaker, often keeps the others from arguing

yamaguchi tadashi:

hariyama: you’re probably thinking, “really? this one?” AND YES, THIS ONE. yamaguchi probs raised it as a makuhita. may look huge and scary, but it adores yamaguchi (and tsukki, to an extent). best friends with tsukki’s claydol.

samurott: gets along great with tsukki’s carracosta the most, the perfect sword-and-shield combo (this was the best i could do next to a spear LMAO). yamaguchi probably had it since it was an oshawott considering how fierce samurott is, and oshawaott suits yamaguchi’s first-year anxiousness perfectly

dodrio: okay i don’t even have a reason for this one i just??? feel like it makes a lot of sense you know??? i think yamaguchi and a dodrio would vibe really well, especially if he raised it from a doduo. the most confrontational and meanest on yamaguchi’s team LMAO

gigalith: yamaguchi would have ADORED a little roggenrola, and by the time it becomes a gigalith it’s fully devoted to him. most likely the last to join his team, and is an absolute sweetheart

yachi hitoka:

granbull: yachi feels so safe around her granbull! she’s had it ever since it was a snubbull, so she’s not scared of its appearance the way most people are. gets really defensive when people ask her if granbull is dangerous

masquerain: i LOVE the idea of yachi with a masquerain! it’s very aesthetically pleasing to yachi’s graphic designer eye. it likes hovering around her granbull and using it as a perch

cherrim: that’s it. just. yachi and a cherrim, no explanation needed

Thanks a ton for the ask! I'll be answering all these in regards to Barriers, quite possibly the world's most self-indulgent Graire fic (Read on AO3 or FFN)

1. If you had to create a soundtrack for your story, what songs would you choose? Why?

Damn, this is so hard considering how much music I listen to while writing/planning Barriers. I do name my chapters after songs that inspired me while writing said chapter, so I figure my soundtrack would end up being those songs.

There are over 20 songs on that bad boy, and I already feel like this post is going to be long, so you can view/listen to the playlist HERE! I’ll continue updating it as I post new chapters :-)

As for why I picked these songs… or really why I pick any of the songs on any of my playlists. It’s all about the feels, how the music and the lyrics come together to take me to a place I need to go to be creative. You know the feel you get when you listen to a song, and it just reminds you of an emotion, a place, a memory, etc.? I’m not sure if that makes sense lol, but the mood that a song creates in my little Brain World helps me find words to put on the page. Music a lot of the time helps interface Brain Scenes into Written Word, and these songs above did just that… and happened to have names that I enjoyed as chapter titles lmao.

3. If you had to direct a scene from your fic, what would you choose? Why? What would it look like? What techniques would you use to convey certain emotions? What would the set look like?

Oooh. Hands down Chapter 8, the Fireworks Festival, particularly when Gray finds out that Claire’s pregnant. AH. Such an emotional scene and I would love to take advantage of the fireworks in the background. I’ll be honest that I don’t watch very many movies, and I’m not a director in the slightest, so I have no idea what the fuck I’m talking about.

So obviously our set is Claire’s farm at night. I imagine everything dark and quiet outside, the only light being Claire’s house. Almost shooting that bitch like a scary movie at first because like, Gray is terrified and I’d want viewers to feel that same way.

When Gray finally finds Claire and she’s on the verge of losing her shit, you zoom in on the tears, the soaked blanket, just Claire’s general state of disarray (which at this point, is out of character for the way she's presented herself) the way she grips Gray’s shirt, etc. And once she finally starts talking I picture the camera just focused on the two of them, because Gray is on the edge of his seat waiting to find out what the fuck is going on and doesn’t see ANYTHING else. Plus the booming fireworks going off in the back just as the situation is getting more intense. Claire would say that she’s pregnant and then the screen would go black lmao.

5. What makes your main ship so compatible? Or, what makes them so incompatible? What do they see in each other?

Oooh. This is complicated, because right now where I’m currently at in the fic it could go either way. As much as I would LOVE to spoil everything, I’m going to speak only for where I’m at in the story.

Gray and Claire are quite compatible at their best, v incompatible at their worst. When the two of them both get out of their head and are real with the other, they work well together. Both are sarcastic, sassy, witty, and have similar senses of humor. They both appreciate the value of hard work and dedication to their craft, and overall, want to be successful in life by their own means. In addition to liking the way the other makes them feel and just like… generally finding the other attractive, I think Claire and Gray admire the other’s drive and passion to some degree. They feel like having someone like that around them (whether it be a friend or… y’know, something else >.>) helps them stay on track. Additionally, some of the things they experienced before moving to town, in addition to experiencing the whole pregnancy thing together, helps them connect and understand each other in ways that maybe others around them can’t. Neither of them likes to be judged, so at times this is conducive to them feeling safe enough to confide things in the other that they may not do with anyone else.

However, Claire and Gray are both also really fucking good at building walls (Hence the name of the fic lol.) and spend a lot of time either hiding, running, or pushing people away. At their worst, their relationship is a grease fire. Both have a tendency to mask how they’re actually feeling for various reasons, despite both of them ALSO valuing honesty from others. It's the hypocrisy for me. Claire’s gut reaction is usually to tell people what she thinks they want to hear, lying for the sake of self-preservation because GOD FORBID she be rejected or be perceived negatively. Gray’s gut reaction is to do or say nothing. He fears vulnerability and doesn’t want to be seen as weak, so if he’s not consciously thinking about it, he’s going to say and do whatever will keep the illusion that he’s got it together. Which is just usually acting unbothered and pushing everything down until he’s beyond bothered. The main issue is that they both also say and do things they don’t mean when upset, and it doesn’t help that for some reason Claire seems to really get under Gray’s skin, and vice versa. Their arguing styles are pretty combative, so without any framework for de-escalating the situation, shit can get pretty nasty between them. Especially when jealousy and other complicated feelings get involved. *Wink wink*

15. Pick a previous relationship (or multiple) of your character’s. Explain how that/those impact the way they navigate their way through relationships now.

Hehe. I’d love to talk about Claire’s previous relationship(s), but I’m going to focus on Gray because he’s the main character and like, major spoilers.

Gray and Mary though. Ah. What a beautifully confusing clusterfuck. There was a lot of push/pull in Mary and Gray’s relationship, and it's intentionally confusing in the fic. Idk if any of you have ever had a friend that you’re really close with, one that you’re crazy about, and you know they like you too, but for whatever reason, they don’t actually want to be exclusive or make it official? Whatever the kids are calling it nowadays. But like yeah. Both loved having the other around and hated the idea of losing them to someone else, even if they couldn’t have them. So on top of their actual friendship was a ‘relationship’ based on impulsive, desperate acts of affection, wobbly boundaries, and evading any actual conversations about it all.

For that reason, Gray is determined to be more open about how he’s feeling rather than sucking it up for the sake of not being lonely. He’s trying to be more honest and expressive instead of holding it all in moving forward, as scary as it is for him. Gray’s relatively been a man of inaction in his relationships (even before Mary), and when he did act, it was usually backed by anger, alcohol, or both. Basically the dude is just trying to take control of his relationships rather than being a passenger.

I feel like whatever happens between Yoshino and Kirishima, they'll always at least stay friends. We see this more in the omake and extras, but when they're not caught in the middle of something very high-stakes, they have a really compatible domestic vibe with each other. They had similar upbringings and have similar interests in terms of the mundane. If they don't get married I know Kirishima won't be able to leave her alone, and I think she'd let him hang around as long as he behaved.

i feel like they would stay friends too....... or at least, be cordial because kirishima to yoshino is very much, "if you can't do anything about it, might as well learn how to tolerate it." they're very much the only pairing i don't mind having any specific way bc i know their story will be written well enough to be satisfied with any conclusion. like truly, its very much anyone’s game rn

lately however, idk about their actually compatibility lmao like they get along just fine for what it is, but its hard to actually see any genuineness when the circumstances are so shady tbh.

dont get me wrong!! the mundane scenes are my FOOD!!! but again, yoshino genuinely doesn’t have anyone to depend on in tokyo but kirishima, so it’s better not to be on his bad side, even if she doesn’t tolerate everything. (thats kind why osaka is so interesting for the recent chapters bc we’re finally seeing a more proactive yoshino bc they’re finally on HER turf + she’s not putting up with his bullshit in the slightest). nonetheless, kirishima may love yoshino in his own way, but he’s also going to die and have all of japan descend into a turf war should he and yoshino break up, and aggravate two regions that already have a lot of bad blood. there’s lots at play on both parts bc lbr we don’t even know yoshino’s objectives yet when this is supposedly her story

but i do like the idea that she’d let him hang around if he behaved....... yoshino seems like the type to use kirishima for information/security after she’s accepted the fact that he’s probably watching her anyways LOL

3. what sort of things does your muse AVOID in a partner?

This one is really hard because Blackfire flocks to anyone who gives her even the slightest bit of attention lmao.

I suppose people who try to change her or “fix” her. She’s not broken---so she claims. So don’t groom her to fit your standards, you know? She thinks she’s perfectly fine. It’s everyone else with the problem.

- They like her sister / prefer her sister over her / enjoy Starfire’s company. Blackfire will NOPE right tf out of there and brand her partner a traitor lol.

- Use her for their own selfish gain. She’s a powerful thing. She will catch onto being used fairly quickly for her abilities. There’s always signs and patterns she picks up on due to being paranoid.

- They’re a police officer. Sure men/women look hot in uniform but no. This doesn’t count for “heros” however.

- Point out her hair color insultingly. She’s a ginger at heart. That’s just cruel. Compliment it and she’s perfectly fine. xD

- They know her native name without her telling them. Which means they obviously went behind her back and conspired with traitorous intentions.

- They don’t bathe / brush their teeth. Its one thing when you’re working really hard and dont have the energy, but REFUSING to clean yourself out of whim? GOODBYE PARTNER.

- They don’t value or see her as an equal.

- They demean and humiliate her.

- Verbally abusing her, mostly for her looks.

- Questioning her intellect. Prepare for a darkbolt to the face “lover”. xD

- They aren’t aggressively infatuated with her because she’s an attention-wanting piece of shit.

20. what would push you to drop a ship?

- When it feels one-sided and I’m the only one making an effort to keep the ship alive. It’s disheartening and it feels as though my alien was just added to a collection or a “backup” plan. This is why I like to ship with chemistry. But even then, sometimes people still pull this shit when they meet a more compatible character. I get it though. Characters and muns have preferences. Sometimes their characters change. That’s dandy. But don’t leave me or my muse stringing along on a leash. I won’t stand for it.

- Cheating threads. It’s very, VERY triggering to me. I have no idea why it made me so traumatized but having a character cheat within a verse / AU our ship is in, I’m likely going to drop that ship and wish them well. I can’t bring myself to physically write out that stuff. I can imply it happened. For example, Blackfire has been cheated on in the past. But writing it out? Makes me sick to my stomach. It just feels wrong and I don’t want to associate with it.

- Lack of communication / passive aggressive replies / pity ship. I love my ships. They mean a lot to me. I love talking about them whether they be platonic or hate. I do my best to keep myself open to talks about our ships, not all the time of course. I like to talk to the muns about their day and just be silly ooc, but one word replies and lack of interest makes my heart sink. Being pity shipped is awful, too. Having someone allow the ship without being fully invested in it or having as much fun as myself is the most disgusting feeling. You’re hurting two people at once when you do that. Yourself, and the person who would love more than anything to have their muse shipped with yours. Can you imagine the feeling of guilt and worthlessness you would both feel? Just don’t do it. I implore you.

- When the character is obviously not interested anymore. I mean, that goes without saying right? xD Sometimes characters break up. It happens. And when they break up, the ship is gone too. c:

- My muse being someone for another character to get close to via ship. For example; somebody asking for a thread like, “lets say blackfire and muse a go to muse b’s house, and while blackfire and muse a like each other, she walks in on those two making out and she gets mad and storms off, but now muse a and b love each other” just. that obviously means the ship was a ploy for another person’s muse to get close to another mun’s muse. Its RP, I know. But that is basically using ME and Blackfire’s connections to get to someone else. It really really hurts. And its happened a LOT due to people not taking Blackfire as a shipping character seriously. She’s just a side piece and they don’t actively try to get to know the tamaranean inside.

There’s a lot more to say but I’ll leave it here for now. xD

You & I are on the same page lmao, I was gonna answer these whether asked or not tbh. SO thank you for sending this & giving me an excuse to post them 😂🤗Are they physically affectionate? Matt: Very much so, he loves little contact like hand holding or brushing their arms together while they’re out. And when his boyfriend drives he always puts his hand on his thigh, just because.Wren: The clingiest lil shit alive. He’s always hugging his partner from behind while they’re doing stuff and he whines about not getting enough attention if they’re in his general vicinity & not hugging him or anything (if they’re not busy of course).

🎶Do they have a type? Matt: Tall, long hair, some visible facial hair, & brown skin... Clearly he dates outside of that but in his ideal world if their personality aligned with his... that is who he’d be with.Wren: Anyone he deems cute and able to cuddle him, that’s his type.

😡What are their deal breakers? Matt: Dislikes kids, has no ambition, can’t communicate properly. It’s why he dates so little, he’s found at least everyone has one of these qualities and he has to work with them on it or just walk away.Wren: Non commitment (refusing to label things or admit to feelings), not being upfront. He’s had enough of it and if there’s even the slightest hint at either of those things he’s out.

↕️Are they sub, dom or switch? Matt: Definitely a switch.Wren: The subbiest sub to ever sub.

🏷️Do they give their partners cute nicknames? Matt: Yes!!! Silas has many, Matty’s favorites for him are Snugglebutt & Flapjack. In secret he calls him Dummy though, affectionately about 90% of the time.Wren: He’s pretty basic and sticks to babe/baby. He doesn’t stick around long enough for personalized nicknames most of the time.

💋Are they more sensual or sexual? Matt: More sensual, for sure. Wren: Sexual, completely.

📖What is their favorite outside of the bedroom activity to do with their partner?Matt: When the weather permits or they’re visiting his home town in Hawaii, walks on the beach. He’s also a fan of dates to coffee shops they haven’t been to before and ordering drinks specific to the shop. Wren: He’s super simple and loves watching reality TV with his partners, especially if they’re into it too. And after each episode He likes to critique everyone over wine and takeout.

🛏What is their favorite bedroom activity to do with their partner? Matt: He really loves getting lingerie and showing it off, what follows after is fine and dandy but he really enjoys the process of getting dressed up and then seeing his boyfriend’s reaction.Wren: [Redacted bc Wren is gross]

💚Are they prone to jealousy? Matt: Not really, if he feels the emotion he’ll acknowledge it, try to figure out what the root of it is and move on. Wren: Yes, very much so. He’ll try to push it aside but he hates feeling like he’s coming in 2nd to his partner(s). [He will eventually grow out of this but he’s currently learning how to deal with it.]

😘Does their demeanor change when in a relationship? Matt:Outwardly he seems a lot grumpier... which isn’t entirely wrong. When he’s still getting used to a new partner it throws him a bit off of his usual balance and it irritates him. He also hates sharing personal details... like the fact that he is even dating someone so when the time comes to be public he seems irritated and angry for quite awhile. Wren: He is giddy as hell and everything is a ray of sunshine when he has a partner. He loves romantic love and wants everyone else to have it and love it too. This lasts for basically as long as he’s with his partner too.

👫Do they display affection in public? What about in private? Matt: Hand holding but he gets flustered about anything more than that or maybe kisses on the cheek in public. Whereas in private he’ll gladly sit on his boyfriends lap and give him all the kisses he could want.Wren: He loves pda, so much. All of the kisses in public and hand holding, all of it, he wants everyone to know he’s taken and in love. In private.... he’s even more intense about this.

💕Are they open to threesomes or a polyamorous relationship? Matt: He’s not really open to causal threesomes, however, if the circumstances for a polyamorous relationship arose and he approved of the third party he would be willing to give it an honest shot.Wren: He loves the thought of threesomes and poly relationships. He’s not sure how he’d actually fare with multiple partners who were also involved with each other but the idea of having different types of love with different people and caring for them in his own way is so appealing to him.

💔Do they have a certain type of person they will not enter into a relationship with? Matt: 85% of the human population. He’s really particular and needs to get to know a person before even considering them as a potential partner. If he couldn’t befriend them, he wouldn’t date them. So, anyone who is guilt trippy, cannot be held accountable for their actions, dodges adult conversations, etc. could not be someone he would date. Wren: Not really, he’s fairly open, so long as they like animals and can deal with him yelling at the TV during movies they’ve got a chance.

💝How long until they feel secure and comfortable in a relationship? Matt: This is bad but...... Never? He’ll always have this slight sense of uncertainty and be prepared to have to detach and leave. It’s a side effect of the relationship that he got his son out of. He may be comfortable with his partner but security isn’t something he’s been accustomed to and it’ll take a long time for that to be the case.Wren: He doesn’t stay long enough for security but comfort comes easy for him. So long as they don’t seem violent he can be comfortable int he span of a couple weeks.

🤐Would they ever confess their feelings first? Matt: He’s usually the one to do so. Once he’s sure he wants to act on them he’ll let the other person know how he feels and let them know exactly why.Wren: He will but he much prefers the other person making him feel wanted and confessing their feelings first.

❌Would they ever cheat on their partner?Matt: Never, ever, ever. He would sooner break things off than cheat and ruin their sense of trust in any relationships after theirs.Wren: He would say no but if he were stuck in what felt like a loveless relationship he would be the first to step outside of it for some from of happiness/a simulation of true love & affection.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦Do they want children? Matt: He’s already got a son but he wants more later on. Kids are a rough topic for him at the moment since he miscarried in September and he’s still recovering from it. Wren: He needs at least one daughter so that he can honor Maxine Shaw and name his child after her. So, yes, he wants kids.

🐶Are they a cuddler?Matt: Very much so, not necessarily for the sake of cuddling but because he’s cold all the time, he leeches body heat off of his partner.Wren: Yes! He loves the contact and being held brings him such comfort.

🔮Do they believe in soul mates? Matt: Not necessarily. He thinks people can be compatible for each other and work well together but the concept of one singular soul mate or “the one” is absolutely ridiculous to him.Wren: Yes, however, he believes you can have multiple soul mates depending on the time and space you’re in. Your soul mate may change, hence why he’s not in any rush to settle down.

⚔️ Are they protective of their partner? Matt: Super protective. He’s ready to fight over anyone disrespecting his boyfriend or hurting his feelings. He’s not afraid to actually stand up for him and get involved either. (Though, online stuff is different. If on the twittersphere someone is being a dick his go to response is: “Baby, they aren’t important. Ignore them.”)Wren: Extremely. If someone even looks at his partner wrong he’s ready to take his earrings off and beat their ass.
