You had the urge to entangle your fingers in his hair.

Realizing the scenario, you shrugged him off your shoulders. He pouted, and seemed so confused and disappointed. "Why?" He asked looking at you mystified. The boy was perplexed as to why you shrugged him off. He knew you liked him, so why did you have to deny it?

"Have you lost all sanity? People could recognize us and rumors would spread." You said holding back the urge to smack his head. He was making this so difficult for you. Yes, you desiderated the idea of being with Donghyuck. To have him in your arms, for him to lean on your shoulders, and to have his soft lips on yours. You yearned for it, that you would not deny.

Lee Donghyuck was ethereal. He walks into a room and everyone turns their head to look at him. People were enthralled by his beauteous charisma. He resembled the beauty of a sunset, aesthetically pleasing, and debonair. As if he was crated by perfection, even he could stand up to Narcissus' ravishing looks. It was no joke, as to why everyone fell head over heels for the heir of LEE Medical Co.

Not only was Donghyuck good looking, he was astute and perspicacious. He aces majority of his tests and belongs to the highest rankings for scores of every test. He never drops from the spot of 5th and up. Last year, he was the highest scoring student of the whole school. Despite his nigh on perfect persona, Lee Donghyuck was unostentatious and self-deprecating.

A few moments later, your orders were served. You sipped your milkshake while Donghyuck took small bites off his macaroons. Heio's Café is one of your most favorite places to stop by and satisfy your sugary cravings. It was a go-to-spot for you to study and hang out with friends.

"Not only does Heio's serve great milkshakes, their macaroons are really good." Donghyuck says and you smile at him. His face was puffy, probably from the macaroons that were stuffed in his cheeks. Looking at him like that, you thought how lucky you were. To be able to see this different side of Donghyuck.

Despite his gregarious and amiable spirit, he never had rumors of being affectionate with other people. He only jokes around with his friends, but there were zero stories of him hooking up with girls. Regardless of knowing he could get any girl with his looks, he just never liked the idea of it.

"I've never tried their macaroons." You admitted and Donghyuck looked like he was ready to explode. His facial expression showing how you sounded implausible. He takes a half-eaten macaroon and holds it up in front of you. "Say aah." He says, in such a childish voice.

Their group would often participate in the school's talent show, and for 3 straight years, they've always had the title of champions.

You, on the other hand, was a moderate dancer. You were part of the school's dance team and often performed during school events. But you were nothing compared to Donghyuck's friends. It's like they were born to dance. It was a natural skill that they all possessed, and they make use of that skill flawlessly.

"Ready darling?" Donghyuck asked. You nodded and the music brought excitement in both of your bodies. Moving to the beat of the song, both of you and Donghyuck, never missed a beat. Smiles on both your faces, you enjoyed every line and dance step of the song.

"Would you like to have dinner before we part ways, darling?" He asked as you both exited the arcade. You nodded, too exhausted to speak. Noticing your frazzled expression, Donghyuck snaked his arm over your shoulder and leaned your head on his shoulders.

You were too debilitated to protest with his actions, so you gave in. The both of you continued walking until you halted in front of a Thai restaurant. "You like spice am I right darling?" He asks and you nodded. He smiled and led you in.

Donghyuck was such an ideal type of guy. He was sweet, thoughtful and ardent. Yet again, with his status, and fame, it was inevitable that he could hurt you. You were still rivals in the business industry, and who knows, he could deceive you. An you were not willing to risk that.

Despite your desire of it, having a relationship with Donghyuck could be devious, perilous and merciless. It's like an example of dark chocolates. It starts off sweet, but the longer it stays in your mouth, the taste of bitterness lingers on your tongue. That's what being with Donghyuck feels like. He may be sweet and affectionate at first, but you never know, he might suddenly decide, he doesn't feel that way anymore. Like he could tear you off his book of life. As if you were some useless chapter.

Would you be considered a masochist, if you still relish in the thought of drowning in agony? Just to be with Lee Donghyuck. Maybe.

"Darling, eat up. Or are you not feeling well?" He speaks up. You were too caught up in your thoughts, failing to realize that the food had already been served. He looks at you with an agitated face as you pick up your chopsticks. Maybe you were just drained from the activities, thus, your hands were shaky as you popped a piece of sweet chili chicken in your mouth.

Donghyuck stood up from his seat, opposite yours, and proceeds to sit beside you. "I'm spoon-feeding you. You seem so exhausted." He says and feeds you some Pad Thai noodles. You didn't have enough energy to dispute with Donghyuck, thus you just went along with his actions.

As the dinner continued, he kept talking to you about little things. Most of the information shocked you. Donghyuck didn't seem like that kind of person as he continued to tell you stories of him. Besides his family reputation, it seems as if Lee Donghyuck was just like any ordinary teenager.

He was just dragged into this family drama, without any rights to oblige. Just like you. He simply wants to grow up like any other. Graduate, find love, have a decent job, and grow old with his own family. He never asked for arranged marriages, threats and a burden of responsibilities. He just wanted to pursue his dreams, you.

After dinner, he finally decided to take you home. While walking towards his car, Donghyuck intertwined your fingers with his once more. He was fond of the thought of your hands being in his. Holding it. He loved the feeling of holding you, never wanting to let go. Afraid that if he does, you might slip away from him. He abhorred the thought of being unable to call you his. He loathe the idea of not being able to tell you utterly how he truly feels about you. He despised not being with you.

"It's apparent that you adore her Donghyuck. Stop trying to negate the feelings." Renjun says as he takes a seat on one of the barstools of their hangout spot. Huang Renjun's family owns the school, so they were able to claim an unused room and renovate it. The group made it their official place of hanging out.

"No it is not." The younger boy denied and Park Jisung snorts from beside him . Donghyuck looks at him, as if the boy had grown an extra head. "Look, it's very obvious that you like her. Why are you trying to deny it?"

After the encounter with you in the hallway, the group of friends decided to interrogate poor Donghyuck. They never knew the both of you were on speaking terms, let alone friends. They knew about the history between both your families, thus they've always thought you despised each other's existence.

"He's afraid of the outcomes. Aren't you Donghyuck?" Na Jaemin. He raises his brow as he poured himself a glass of soda, leaving the remaining half for Lee Jeno. Donghyuck buried his face in his palms and let out a frustrated groan. "Jaemin is right. I am." He admitted.

"To love is to make risks and accept all its corollaries, may it be for the good or the bad. So if I may ask, is she worth risking for?" Jeno asked as he stood up and grabbed the soda from Jaemin. He was right. Were you worth all these possible chaos in the future. Definitely.

You were Donghyuck's first love. He never felt this way towards anyone, but you. "Think about it Donghyuck. Not only would it be you that would face the consequences. She'll have to go through it as well." Zhong Chenle says as he picks up his bag and the boys finally decide to disperse and head out. ___

Your hearts were drumming against your chest and both your minds were fuzzy. Neither of you had the sanity to cogitate what was happening.

You felt his soft lips on yours. It brushed against yours ever so gently. As if it was caressed by an amngel He held you securely and gently, afraid that you might drift away from him. This was one of his dreams coming true. To be able to show you how he feels.

You responded with the same action. Both your lips moved in perfect sync with each other's. Is this what love is? Does it strip you away of coherent thoughts and leave your mind blank? “So. About that roleplay you promised.” Hizashi said when they got home.

Her back to him, Teris stopped in the living room. Damn. She had promised him that, hadn’t she.

Recognizing the music, Teris rolled her eyes, smirking.

The drive doesn't take too long. Five songs later, they're in the parking lot and getting out of the car. Riri runs to get a cart and Peter follows behind, getting another cart. With how big the bulks are and with how much you'll be buying, you might need four in total. So when you reach the entrance, you instruct Harley to get another cart as you grab one as well. The four of you walk side by side, annoying a lot of the fellow shoppers just trying to get through.

Four teens shopping at Costco on their own was never a good idea from the beginning. You've all been at the store for about half an hour now and haven't even made a dent in the list. You're only a quarter of the way done, only one basket halfway filled because they all want to be so childish. You can't put all the blame on them though since you've been slacking too.

As you approach the refrigerated area, you grab the list and grab random vegetable packs, milk, and other items on the list. Harley joins you, and when he sees you shiver, he's quick to take his jacket off and hand it to you.

The two walk out with a basket full of frozen goods and meet back up with Peter and Riri, who this time around are laughing at memes on their phones. You approach the two laughing friends and gesture in a way telling them to get a move on.

You all stay in the store for another hour before you've gotten everything on the list and some. Now you're waiting in line, looking over at the cart that Harley stands behind. Everything that was on the list managed to fit into three carts, so the last one was filled with the things that you guys wanted. Or things you know Bucky and your father would appreciate. Chocolate cake, boxes of popcorn, jugs of juice, industrial jars of Nutella, and so much more. The entire time the four of you wait in line, Riri goes on to ask and beg to stop by at Starbucks. Harley spent the entire time staring.

Thoughts on Tokonatsu 2018!

Tokonatsu 2018 has been over for a few weeks now, but I only just found time to go through all my gear to pack it away for my next camping trip, and in the process, I found my camera, so this is a great time to talk about how it went!

This post is from the perspective of an attendee. I’ve already done a post about going as an exhibitor, which you can find here.

Tokonatsu is an event that I attend every year; it’s probably the main fixture on my con schedule (I go to a fair few, but Toko’s the one I do my best to never miss). The con is unique, in that it’s an anime & Japanese culture convention that takes place on a campsite, with events etc. in marquees and plenty of outdoor activities.

This was our home, including myself, @squidgesqwadge, @starwulfen, along with a few of our friends, for the 4 days:

The weather this year was fantastic. Dry, hot, perhaps even too hot sometimes, but I wouldn’t want to complain - I would certainly take this over rain! However, the sun made us really glad we’d managed to scrape together the cash to buy a cheap gazebo in the weeks running up to the event. The table was also a new addition, but I had that already - I bought it to exhibit at Wyntercon 2017 and future events where exhibitors have to provide their own.

This was our 5th year at Toko, and after our somewhat disastrous first year where we used borrowed and throwaway camping gear, we decided we didn’t want to ever go through that again, so on each subsequent year we’ve bought a few more bits-and-pieces to making it a bit more glamping than camping.

Tokonatsu used to run Fri/Sat/Sun with attendees leaving the campsite mainly on Monday morning, however, in recent years, they’ve opened the site on the Thursday night for an extra charge, and we’ve taken this up. However, this first night is just a chance to set up and relax, so no con activities, but that’s actually a good thing - it gives you a chance to meet people and get together with friends you may not have seen all year.

We arrived in the evening and got set up. We had a mini-crisis involving a bunch of flying ants in the tent, and we had to fumigate it and seal it for an hour before we could actually use it. That being said, before the sun went down, we were all settled and had the chance to go to a local supermarket to stock up on ice, beer and food.

On the first day of the con proper, the opening ceremony was a blast, though due to the heat, we ended up doing more chilling out this time around and fewer activities than usual. This was our choice though, and puts me in mind of how Toko is such a relaxing 4 days; some cons I’ve attended it’s all go-go-go, which is great if that’s why you’re there, but sometimes it’s nice to be able to chill out.

A later treat was the Kimono panel, held in one of the tents by two volunteers. This was actually a panel covering the wider topic of traditional Japanese attire. I know a fair bit about this topic, but the guys who ran it were real experts, demonstrating some particularly complex attire like furisode garments and different obi knots.

Day 2 involved the dealer’s tent and the bring-and-buy, so I spent much of this day at my stall. During this time, @starwulfen and her friends were in the cosplay masquerade; fortunately I was able to see them from my place at the dealer’s tent (they looked awesome). However, I sold through my entire stock by 6pm, so I was able to pack up early and get back to the festivities!

Saturday at Tokonatsu involves one of the event’s unique draws; the Toko Matsuri. The staff at the event assemble tents with typical Japanese Matsuri-style games and attractions. Unfortunately I don’t have any pictures of this but...

... this is what a Matsuri looks like in Japan; if you’ve watched any slice-of-life anime you’ve almost certainly seen one. These festivals happen all over the country, and during my time living in Japan, I attended several, including the large one in my home city during several summers.

Toko’s Matsuri is naturally smaller than this example, but the staff do a great job of trying to recreate the “liminal” feeling of the event, with the glow of the lanterns and lights strung between the trees. The traditional games are fun, especially after a few beers.

My time in Japan has left me with a few garments that I rarely get a chance to wear; one of them is a traditional yukata, with obi, zori and tabi socks. Some of these items were gifted to me by the Japanese that I worked with (mainly the older women who seemed thrilled at the chance to dress up a foreign guy), but I don’t get many opportunities to wear these in the UK. However, the warm, balmy evening provided a great chance to put these on for a bit of personal nostalgia.

During the event, we were also able to attend a tea ceremony demonstration, which was wonderful, given the outdoor setting. @squidgesqwadge also entered the writing competition, in which she placed 2nd (we had joked about if she placed first, as signed copies of my first two books were the prize!).

As the evening drew on, the event set up their official outdoor cinema. On this evening they showed episodes of Disgaea and Tenchi Muyo, the latter of which was a big part of our group’s early anime experiences, so it was a fun throwback for us.

Once the official cinema had finished, we went back to our tent and set up our own portable projector:

We bought this on a whim from Amazon a number of years ago, when it was in something of a fire-sale. My original intent was to find some use for it as part of my stall at indoor events. It runs off a USB battery and I have it plugged into a bluetooth speaker and mounted on a tripod, with a large bedsheet for the screen. It’s a no-brand model and was inexpensive, but the great thing about Toko is that the countryside gets really dark, so you can still get a pretty awesome picture.

One of the highlights this year was finding out we could run a SNES Mini off a USB battery, so we were able to have a bit of outdoor Street Fighter II Turbo:

By the late evening we were watching random abridged anime episodes, and with the sell-out of my books and everything else, I decided that was the night to get trashed, so I did.

I spent much of the final day of the event in the manga tent. Toko Retreat, which I guess is Toko’s sister event that runs alongside the con, operate this (and some of the other attractions). Essentially a large marquee that contains a manga library and places to sit. I read a bunch of El Hazard and a few other things, until it was time for the quiz.

Quizzes are a staple of anime cons (at least here in the UK) and this year, they tried a more “pub quiz” style format. The quiz made us realise two things; firstly, my hiragana is faaaaar more rusty than I thought (seriously I need to study that again before I lose it) but also that @starwulfen is amazing at anime music rounds (seriously, it’s like a gift). It was a pretty difficult quiz; the guy running it did a great job in terms of having a wide variety of questions - but we won!

After this was the closing ceremony, which followed a lip-sync performance of I’ll make a man out of you (which has become something of a Toko tradition), and another night of projector, beer and campfire, with many of us staying up until approaching 4 in the morning to try and drag out the last few hours of the best Tokonatsu so far.

And it was! There were many changes this year to the layout of the events, but I would be the first to say that I think this was the best Tokonatsu ever, and I really hope those changes persist to future years.

The committee, gophers, the staff, everyone did a fantastic job. Stuff seemed to run on time, the events and attractions were great fun, and I know from my event planning experience that this only comes about from a lot of very hard work from a number of very dedicated people.

Fitbit allows you to sync your Deezer playlists with your Fitbit if you've gone all-in on streaming music and don't have a local music collection. You will, of course, require a Deezer Premium subscription to access this feature.

1. From the Fitbit app's settings menu, go to the Music page.

2. Choose Deezer.

3. To get the activation code, open the Deezer app on your watch. To link the watch with your Deezer account, go to fitbit.com/deezer.

4. Log in or create an account to use the service. You'll now be provided with a variety of playlists to sync down to your Fitbit, both your own and those created by Deezer.

5. Sit back and listen to the music you've chosen. Depending on the amount of music you're trying to sync, this procedure might take a long time. It's best to charge your Fitbit while listening to music.

How can I link Pandora music to my Fitbit?

1. Go to the Music page under your Fitbit's settings in the Fitbit app, just like you did with Deezer.

2. Tap the login button after selecting Pandora.

3. To download music to your Fitbit, you'll need to subscribe to the top-tier Pandora Premium subscription. If you want to try it out before committing to the service, you may do so with a one-month trial.

4. You'll note that Pandora doesn't have as many alternatives as Deezer once you've joined in. You will be able to select up to three of your favorite stations through the integration. You may also use Pandora's Workout section to find playlists. In addition, a Thumbprint radio station is downloaded depending on your listening habits.

How to use your Fitbit to listen to Spotify

Spotify streaming on Fitbit requires a Spotify Premium account and the Spotify app, which can be downloaded through the Fitbit mobile app.

1. On your phone, open the Fitbit app.

2. Apps can be tapped.

3. The Spotify app may be found under All Apps. To install, simply tap the button.

4. Now go to My Apps and press the gear icon next to Spotify to access the settings.

5. Go to your Spotify account and sign in.

Spotify on fitbit.com setup smartwatches, unlike some other streaming services, does not have an offline mode and instead works as a remote for streaming from your phone.

It does, however, have Spotify Connect capabilities, allowing you to use your Fitbit to control playing on any other compatible device. Aside from that, the app allows you to listen to music from your collection and recent plays, but it does not allow you to search for playlists.

The Sensate 2 is a smart wearable that claims to aid relaxation. It does this via a combination of vibration, sound, and visual deprivation. This helps you to focus on just being, rather than doing, which ultimately allows you to clear your mind quickly, achieving relaxation. Despite an active interest in audio therapy and alternative relaxation, I always err on the side of caution when a new product arrives on the market. I exercised this same level of caution when the Sensate 2 arrived for review; a smart wearable that claims to have relaxation benefits and, by proxy, ease anxiety.

But can it actually help with the act of just "being"? Is $249 too much to pay for such a simple device? Let's take a look at what this vibrating power-pebble is all about.

What's in the Box?

Here's what you'll see when you open the Sensate 2 box for the first time:

There is also an associated Sensate app that works via your smartphone or tablet. The wearable won't actually work without the app, so you need to ensure you have installed this.

Also, dig out a pair of noise-canceling headphones; the Kokoon Sleep Headphones would do the job here (or something like them) as they work for contemplative activities, too. You'll need these for the soundtracks on the app.

What Is the Sensate 2 Vibrating Wearable Actually For?

If you are the kind of person who, like this writer, struggles to relax without help, then Sensate 2 could be the answer you're looking for.

It is a smart wearable which, when placed upon the sternum (your chest bone), vibrates in time with music, provided by a dedicated Sensate app. This, according to its creators, will tone your vagus nerve and help you relax in, quote, "as little as ten minutes".

We'll cover the "science" behind it in more detail later but, despite it sounding like another fad product, the Sensate 2 actually works, albeit with a caveat or two. At least, it worked for this reviewer.

Form Factor and Feel

To look at, the Sensate 2 presents as a smooth, black, plastic pebble. It has a brushed feel to it, meaning it is pleasant to have it next to your skin when in use.

It doesn't weigh very much at all, which is good as this ensures its 2.7 ounces (79 grams) won't feel restrictive or overbearing as the device lies on your chest. Given that the chassis is plastic, it is the vibrating motor inside the Sensate that will contribute the most to the weight.

The front of the pebble has a small power button, surrounded by an illuminating ring that glows electric blue when you switch the Sensate on. The top of the device has a metal hoop for the provided lanyard to attach.

The bottom has the charging port with an LED indicator surround. Somewhat disappointingly, this is micro-USB and not USB-C, but that isn't exactly the end of the world. It would just be nice to see all new products embracing the latest technology.

And that is it! A very simple piece of unfussy tech. So simple, in fact, that we could forgive you for wondering what your $249 is actually paying for.

However, if you look beyond the characteristics and internal machinations of the device itself, you'll see that it is the package and the results you are paying for, and not just the lump of plastic and electronics sat on your chest. You can't really put a price on proper relaxation.

How Does the Sensate 2 Work?

As mentioned, in simple terms, the Sensate 2 puts sound and vibration together to encourage the user to relax. The device isn't as simple as it makes out, though, as there are several extra factors in play, here.

Vibration

We'll deal with the physical aspect of the device, first. Obviously, it vibrates. These vibrations can range in intensity, thanks to the Sensate app.

You can toggle the strength of the vibrations in there, and the vibration will max out when it reaches the intensity limit you set. The Sensate will vary the intensity of its vibrations up to this limit, without your input.

During the session, the smart element of the Sensate device means it can vary the intensity of the vibrations, and the time it vibrates for, of its own accord. It will do so based on the soundtrack you are listening to, syncing its vibrations up with the music and sound effects.

Placing the Sensate on your chest bone causes it to send vibrations to your vagus nerve, which runs the entire length of your body, pretty much, passing through your right lung on its way.

The vagus nerve is a part of the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS), which medical professionals refer to, colloquially, as the "rest and digest" nervous system. In fact, the vagus nerve is the "rest" part in that nomenclature. This part of our PNS is all about conserving energy, which the Sensate helps you do, through relaxation.

The vibrations travel from your sternum, where you have placed the Sensate, through your ribcage and into your lungs, where they resonate in much the same way that you can feel the bass from a festival speaker, internally.

This, in turn, stimulates the vagus nerve which then triggers your body to relax, promoting rest in this way. If you place the Sensate in the correct place, you will actually feel a sensation in your lung which, I assume, is the vagus nerve responding to the vibrations.

Sound also plays a big part in how Sensate works, as it unifies the vibration with the sound you hear via your headphones.

So, if you hear a deep, loud, bassy throb on the soundtrack, the Sensate replicates this with a long, drawn-out vibration at maximum intensity. Likewise, the pebble will interpret any top-end, treble chirrups as small, staccato vibrations.

Currently, because you have to use the Sensate app, you also have to use a soundtrack from the app library. There are 13 to choose from, and the app separates these into several categories; Nature, Space & Time, Sacred Spaces, and Breathe.

Each soundtrack uses a combination of relaxing sound effects, music, various forms of noise (i.e. white noise or pink noise), and binaural beats/isochronic tones, as a method of providing audio therapy.

We'll take my favorite of the bunch and the soundtrack I used most during testing; Sound of Silence from the "Breathe" collection. I chose this one as concentrating on breathing helps me to empty my mind and relax.

Plus, Sound of Silence is 30 minutes long; I prefer a longer meditative experience than 10 minutes, as it can take me that long to just clear my thoughts. However, there are plenty of quicker ten-minute options if you want to just empty your mind and refocus.

As mentioned, this is from the "Breathe" selection. Placing the Sensate on my chest, I could see how the audio works in harmony with the vibration.

I can align my breathing with the long pulses of the bass in the music and the extended vibration from the Sensate.

This allows for roughly six breaths per minute (or one every ten seconds); a rate of respiration that experts across a range of disciplines, from medical science to yoga, argue is optimum for relaxation. You can read expert literature about slow breathing, and respiratory vagal stimulation, from a range of online scientific sources.

Anecdotally, six breaths per minute is also reportedly beneficial for cardiovascular health, as slow breathing means a slower, relaxed heart rate and it works to manage pain.

The Breathe soundtrack features a lot of white noise, which sounds like static. This helps to eliminate external sounds from your perception. There are also tonal drones known as isochronic tones and binaural beats. These often crop up in use during audio therapy as part of a meditative routine.

Binaural beats and isochronic tones, to explain briefly, work by manipulating your brainwaves to induce certain mental states. So, some believe that, when played at certain frequencies, these sound signals can help you focus or, as is probably the case with the Breathe collection of soundtracks, breathe more easily/optimally for relaxation, for example.

Sensate tells me it has specially tailored the soundtracks along with a sound therapy expert to ensure they work on several levels, as described above.

Visual Deprivation

Using the provided eye beanbag, you can block out all external light, meaning bright daylight won't interrupt your relaxation session.

You can experiment with this element of the session a bit, too. Try warming your eye beanbag on a radiator for five minutes to give you relaxation a cozy feel. I like to feel anything cold on my eyes and eye area, so I go in the other direction and cool my eye beanbag in the refrigerator.

Does the Sensate 2 Make You Feel More Relaxed?

In a word, yes. In this reviewer's own experience of the Sensate 2 device, combined with the app, it assists with relaxation.

I have tested the Sensate, daily, over a couple of weeks and I noticed the difference immediately. The first time I used the pebble, I observed that the time it took me to relax was significantly less, almost instant in fact, compared to when I had only previously used audio meditation.

The Sensate's vibration also enhances the physical feeling of relaxation. This meaning that limbs feel looser, and places that you might struggle to disperse tension relax a lot quicker. This, presumably, is down to the stimulation of the vagus nerve and its effect on our rest response.

It is the entire package, ultimately, that ensures you can enter a completely relaxed state. The eye beanbag blocks out visual disruption, so you can relax at any time. The music follows suit, negating aural disruption, while at the same time offering additional cues such as the binaural beats mentioned earlier.

It is this combination of device and bespoke content that, on the face of it, you are paying for. If this is your only consideration, then the Sensate will certainly look too expensive for what it is.

Admittedly, that was this reviewer's first thought; I couldn't see myself paying $250 for the package in its current form. I also feel it needs more content within the app to provide more tangible value. There is more than one way of looking at that initial investment, though.

The Sensate 2 helps you relax. Yes, there are lots of devices that can also do this. But, in a world where we seem to put more value on the "doing" rather than the "being" of our human nature, the time and ability to relax are becoming rarer commodities. Should we really be putting a price on our wellbeing?

The short answer is no, we shouldn't. I would advise you to try some less expensive variations on this theme first, before you go gung-ho and invest $250 on your relaxation whim. This kind of alternative self-therapy doesn't work for everyone, so start small, preferably with something that is free, and see if it is for you.

My advice would be the same for any device purporting to aid relaxation or offer an alternative method of relaxing, though; that isn't specific to the Sensate. If you are finding that less expensive methods prove beneficial, then you should really consider the Sensate 2 as an option; it is an excellent all-in-one relaxation package.

A Vibrating Chest Pebble CAN Help You Relax

So, it would seem that the Sensate does actually work, albeit with a fairly substantial, initial, financial outlay. That said, if you are desperately trying to find a way to relax, then this will be invaluable.

It certainly helped this reviewer to achieve relaxation goals, and I think my wallet's wincing would subside quickly when I relaxed more as a result of the pebble and its ecosystem, had I paid for the Sensate 2 and not reviewed a loan device. It has value beyond the tangible product, is the message here.

As mentioned, we suggest you try a more pared-down solution to aid relaxation, especially if you have no experience with these sorts of alternative methods. That way, when you invest in the Sensate 2, you're doing so with some prior knowledge of how it works and if it will be the right device for you.

Not only in price but also performance it's been quite some time and I'm sorry that's just the truth over the years Beats hasn't really said anything new that is in your audio department but today finally we got the Powerbeats Pro and the specs are quite impressive. Physical Features

Going over the physical features first. I anticipated these were going to be bulky and they were going to stick out that the earphones would also bounce around during intense movements with my testing on all fronts. They don't, they're actually quite flush against my ear and for the first time I can run with a hoodie on and the earphones don't feel as though they'll fall out from gently rubbing against that fabric. Now with more intense movements simply demonstrate myself jump-roping here I'd never had any doubt that they would fall off and more importantly I don't feel that the ear tips will be lifting off my ears and losing sound quality. That's really impressive, these are truly wireless earphones. One of the issues that I've noticed when I had the Powerbeats 3 now of course cosmetically I think they look pretty damn good too. Now all of this praise off physically being stable it's because of these ears they are adjustable and does retain its shape. They do feel more competent than the Powerbeats 3 as it's a bit stiffer and the casing feels a little bit more durable. So, we'll see over time now I love the fit on my draw bars and my Samsung Galaxy buds more recently those who were great but I will admit the ear hooks do provide that extra level of stability.

Now moving on beats are claiming these are water and sweat resistant spraying the crap out of these things right here they are still working perfectly fine. I was hoping for some sort of ingress rating or considering that we've had all this time to design these having it be submersible/ Although overkill would have given me more peace of mind there's a few other competitors out there that offers just that why not the Powerbeats Pro. You can't be in your shower listening songs under heavy water pressures. Mic, Buttons & voice commands

But getting a closer look easily identifiable multi-function button. The actions are identical on either side which I really liked. Little volume rocker buttons are located at the very top and also are easily identifiable. Everything is there except for transparency mode. Maybe some people call it here through ambient to air whatever name these companies give them beats does not have the ability to turn on the internal microphones so you can hear your environmental noises nearly. Everyone else is offering it and I know a bunch of you use it for safety while running. Some uses these truly wireless earphones while working to hear if your boss sneaks up on you. We don't get that again with your Powerbeats Pro. Last test I confirm you can activate Siri with your voice as it seems to always be listening for that command. Awesome feature or of course you can always hold down the beats logo again on either side of these earbuds. Now with Android using my voice didn't work for me. You can only activate Google assistance with the button press or telling the button hold all right.

Bluetooth & Apple H1 Chip

Now moving on to the good stuff here. The technology there's this new Apple H1 Chip inside and it's working wonders. Yes, you do get amazing fast and seamless bluetooth pairing a very similar experience to those who had ear pods previously and with my iPhone I'm averaging about two seconds when the case opens to when the iPhone brings up this cool 3d spinning thing in battery life. In states definitely fast enough for me though but I love how seamless and more importantly how consistent it's been with Android, it's honestly not a slouch either. On screen is proof with my new pixel 3a I've been testing it connects on average in three seconds. Either scenario either phones by the time you put these earphones back into your ear. Adjust them, get them properly seated. It's already been paired. Now since we're on the topic of Bluetooth, yes, I can't connect to more than one device at a time. yes, after testing playing video on either Android or iPhone where the YouTuber Netflix, I had zero syncing issues. Now although I couldn't find if the Powerbeats Pro uses bluetooth 5.0 or not which is typically used to signify which version a device uses. Apple States instead on their websites this uses a class 1 signal instead which means the earphones should be good up to 150 to 200 linear feet and yes wireless range and stability it has been great. I've been able to walk my entire apartment here with several walls in between and had zero signal loss. Now I also couldn't find if beats use apdex HD to determine how high of a resolution audio file it can handle but again I usually don't as there's been some great headphone / earphones without that high-resolution designation.

Battery & charging case

In addition to that chip we get one of the best battery performances on any truly wireless earphones that I've tested. Fast fuel just 5 minutes on that charger gives you back an hour and a half. This is the fastest I've experienced on any pair of truly wireless earphones that I've tested. Not to mention beats claims up to nine hours of use with the case you're getting about an additional 15 hours of use for a total of up to 24 hours. Most truly wireless earphones I have tested, they've ranged from 12 hours to 15 hours give or take an hour for the extremes but the Powerbeats Pros, they're class leading with my testing at 50 percent volume like all my other truly wireless earphones. Since we're talking about the case or maybe you have seen that in the image here. I know some will say this case is quite large and it is but to be fair how else are you going to have these ear hooks attached to the earphones themselves. The case itself had more than one light to indicate battery life. I wish the case featured USBC versus lightning to have a truly wireless port for all my devices. I know Apple fans will be upset hearing that but the iPad pro has USB C there might be a USB C iPhone coming down the road so if that's the case no pun intended, here that's future proofing yourself that would be ideal unless I don't think there's any other company doing this just yet but if we can make this case dust proof in or water proof that would give me 100% peace of mind. But again, that's me being nitpicky right there and wishing for features at this point. And before I forget about this, there is audio pause and play when you take off your earphones the audio stops you put them back on and the audio plays again and this also works for video as well. Seconds, you can leave either one of these earphones out of your ear and the audio will still play. You can have the other earphone on the other side of the room if you want and the audio will still continue this signal is not dependent on the other earphone like traditional truly wireless earphones.

Audio Quality Noise Canceling

Alright, let's get into some of the audio features. First up, let's talk about the microphone get ready that is and the audio is completely unedited and it's a little bit of breeze. Only guys can tell us by here being all crazy or jacked up right now but let me know what you guys think down the review description below. There's no good sound bad sound to pick it up. Let's test out this audio. as nice and expensive as my microphones are audio recorded on my end and then played through your speakers are not the best depiction of audio accuracy. It's just a sample but it is better than nothing but hence my filing audio review here the Powerbeats Pro is loud enough for most people. Loud but still comfortable to me is at about 75 percent volume, there is some sound leaking occurring, So those sitting right next to me in a very quiet room, library whatever. Can hear what you're listening to so just be a little bit cautious about that. The ear tips do sit around the ear canal but they don't sit fully inside. Most people will find that more comfortable but keep in mind that it won't give you the best passive noise isolation as other truly wireless earphones and of course a little bit more sound leaking as well. These do let in some noise as much as it leaks out so if you're in a busy place you might have to turn it up to maybe 75 percent volume to encapsulate yourself here with your own audio and kind of drone out the outside noise. Again, that's only if you're in a very busy environment.

Powerbeats Pro True Bass

Now jumping into bass. it's deep at loud volumes its rumbling. It feels like I'm wearing wired earphones at times considering how deep these actually go. If you like bass no question the Powerbeats Pro is it the Jaybird X4 run ex tees were the next closest in bass for me but Jaybird X4 offers a punchy variation or more of a bass boosted audio signature. Versus offering deep bass like the Powerbeat Pros. Now going into the mid-range, the louder you go the more basses experience that's pretty obvious but I do notice the mid-range is just ever so slightly overshadowed by bass most. Having most average consumers, I think they'll be fine with this or the tolerance level is still within reason for most consumers. Now if you're more of a technical audio listener or if you don't like the bass then you might prefer something more has more emphasis on the vocals / mid-range something that may be a little bit more forward in that mid-range frequency. This is simply a matter of preference the high frequencies would never ear in your tingey in my opinion but if anything, that is clear or lacking actually in some resolution or detail on the top and especially that loud volumes at moderate listening levels. It's not a big deal, a little bit more detail a little bit more Sparkle up top would have been much better as for soundstage there isn't much of a wide soundstage either you get decent audio separation but nothing huge or class defining. powerbeats pro These are great with hip-hop and EDM most but not all pop songs will do well. Those favoring vocals, I would consider these. Powerbeats Pros are no question bass ear truly wireless earphones if you prefer a pair that's more so for jamming outs verses technical accuracy, the Powerbeats Pro are recommended to. At least give them a try if you highly value the better life connectivity, the ear hooks alone comfort instability. I'd go from recommended to highly recommend it as not many other are offering the core functionalities at this level. “If you want to see Noah alive, you have an hour to go to this place”, killer said through my phone, and a map flashed on the screen.There was a red mark on top of a building. I’ve never been there, but I knew how to get to there. Killer had taken Noah, and now called to me and Audrey to harass and threaten us. Noah was like a brother to me, and I would do anything for him, so I grabbed my keys, and started to walk to my car.

“Hey, are you sure we should just do what the killer asks? This could be and probably is a trap, so we should think about this a bit”, Audrey said behind me. “I know that this can be a trap, but we don’t have much time, so I will do anything that the killer asks. I will not let him die!”, I said firmly back to her, and started my car. She stood outside for a while, thinking about her options and then jumped on a seat next to me. “Alright, let’s do this, for Noah”, she said.

When we drove to the yard of our destination, I got chills going down on my spine. The place was abandoned house. It was big, and looked like it was haunted, and as a sane person, I really didn’t want to go, but for Noah’s sake, I got out of the car and took a deep breath. “You ready?”, I heard Audrey ask. “Yup”, I lied, and started to walk towards the front door. It let out a loud creak as I opened it slowly, and then we entered in the house. It was dark, and full of spiderwebs and dust. “Am I the only one thinking that this is a really bad idea? I feel like we are the basic girls in every horror movie ever who get killed first”, Audrey asked. “You know, that really doesn’t help. But no, you are not the only one”, I answered.

We walked a bit further, until we heard a piercing scream coming from deeper the house. “Noah!”, we shouted at the same time. “Where are you?”, I screamed. “Please, somebody help me!”, I heard him shouting again. We ran in the house frantically, searching the source, but couldn’t find it. “Hey hey, Audrey. Let’s stop for awhile, and listen”, I said after sometime. We stood, and listened, until we realised that the voice was coming from below us. Soon we found a door, which lead to stairs that went under the building.

I swallowed, and started to walk, one step at the time. “Noah?”, I whispered. We didn’t get an answer. The stairs led to a tiny little room, and only thing in that room was a table, and on that table there was a bluetooth speaker. “What the he-” I got to say before we heard a loud bang. I looked Audrey in the eyes, and then we ran right back upstairs, only to see that the door was closed. I tried to open it, but it was locked.

“Open this you son of a bitch!”, I screamed and beat the door, but it stayed closed. “This cannot happen, I have to get out”, I whispered. “Hey, it’s fine, we’ll find a way out, I promise”, Audrey tried to soothe me, but it didn’t work. I took my phone, and tried to call Emma, but there wasn’t signal. I ran back to the room, but there wasn’t a signal either. “Shit!”, I screamed.

Suddenly I realised how small the room was, and I started to panic. I couldn’t breath, and I felt pressure on my chest. I dropped on my knees, and tried to calm down, but the walls seemed to come closer and closer. “Oh god, no,no..”, I whimpered in panic, my hands trembling.

“Hey, what’s going on?”, Audrey asked with very worried tone. “I--I can’t-I can’t breathe”, I choked out. “Look at me. (Y/N), please, look at me”, she said to me firmly. I raised my head, and looked into her beautiful and piercing blue eyes. “Just like that, and now, breathe at the same sync as me, okay?”, she asked. I nodded. “Alright. Now, breathe slowly in, with your nose”, she said, and did it with me. “Then, count to three”. “One..Two...Three. And now, exhale slowly with your mouth”, she guided me. We did it again and again, until I was somewhat calm again.

“Wow. I didn’t know that you knew how to calm down from a panic attack”, I said after a silence. “I guess there is a lot that you don’t know about me”, she said with a smile and a wink. I blushed and looked at my feet. “But I would like to know more”, I told her after a while. I looked at her in the eyes, and smiled back. “Well, in that case, tell me what you want to know, we have time since it looks like we’re gonna be stuck here for a while”.

I thought for a while my first question. “Well..You always wear that key necklace. Does it have a story?”, I asked. She looked at me surprised, like she wasn’t expecting that kind of a question. “My mother gave it to me, before she left to the hospital”, she said quietly, and touched the necklace. “Oh. I am sorry, you don’t have to talk about her if you don’t want to”, I apologized. “It’s fine. You know, I think she would have liked you”, she smiled. “But now is my turn”, she changed the subject. “Hmm...Do you have somebody special in your sight?”, she asked. “Wh-What?”, I blushed. “Well? Do you?”, she giggled. “Umm..maybe?”, whispered smiling. “Who is it?”, she asked, and I could almost swear that I heard a tint of jealousy in her voice. “Nope, not gonna tell”, I laughed. “Oh c’moon”, she pleaded. “No way”, I said stubbornly. “Fine. Then I won’t talk to you until you tell me”, she said, and crossed her arms. “That is so unfair”, I laughed, and poked her in her side. She waved her head as a “No”. “You really are not gonna speak to me ever again?”, I asked. Now she waved her head as a “Yes”.

I breathed in, and decided to go with it. “Well, in that case. The person that I like doesn’t seem to like me back in that way, so it seems that I am in this so called “Friendzone”, or that is what Jake calls it. But if I can’t have this person as a partner, then I want them as a friend at least. As long as this person is happy”, I rambled. I looked carefully in her eyes, but I couldn’t read her emotions. So, I decided to take it further. “This person is the most beautiful thing that I have ever seen walking on the earth. If this person would be an animal, it would be a cat most definitely”, I laughed and continued; “This person has alway protected me, and taken care of me. But it seems to be that this person is interested in somebody else than me, but I am trying to accept it. It just..It is just really hard to see this person, when they do that cute little thing with her nose when embarrassed, or how this person is always ready to protect me, or others close to this person. But, as I said, I can only look, not touch”, I spoke longingly.

“Well, I told you, so now you can speak again”, I changed my tone back to happy after some silence. She didn’t say anything, so I looked at her. She stared me right in the eyes, and had this weird expression. “Wh-”, I got to say before she cut my words by kissing me hard. My heart started to beat like crazy, and I carefully touched her black short hair. I brushed it, and kissed back with same passion. Soon she slipped her tongue in the kiss, and my breath hitched in my throat, and I felt like electricity going through my body.

Just when things started to get heated, I heard sirens from outside. “Did you hear that?”, I asked and broke the kiss. “I’ll ignore them if you do”, Audrey purred. “You idiot”, I laughed, and rose. I pulled her up too, and we ran to the upstairs door. We beat it, and screamed, until a police opened it.

15 minutes later we were sitting in an ambulance, on our way back to home. “How did the police know where we were?”, I wondered out loud. “Oh, I texted to Emma where we were going”, Audrey answered. “You little..”, I started to scold her, but she had this adorable look on her face, so all I could do was to kiss her.

Let's see here...the first major thing I have to write about is foobar2000!!!

I'm perhaps ages late to the party (?), but I've finally taken the plunge and switched from using iTunes to foobar2000! This was not a decision I took lightly, but I decided to pull the trigger after working with foobar2k and considering the pros and cons, and I've been pretty satisfied so far!

Foobar2000 is a free windows-based audio player that is known for many for its customizability, advanced features, modular design, and basically being the dream of anyone who is not scared of complexity and wants to really have their music player function the way THEY want. It's also available for OSX as of ~1.5 years ago, though I have not tested that build yet.

Perhaps more importantly, foobar2000 now (as of ~a year ago I think) has a mobile client, available for all of iOS/Android/WindowsPhone. This is key as one of the primary things tying me to iTunes has always been the fact that my ecosystem includes a lovely iPhone SE running iOS and of course I'd really like to have my music readily available on that.

Right, so let's first talk about the things I'm losing during the move to fb2k:

First off, syncing music to iOS is a bit more involved. Unfortunately, foobar2000 has no way of directly interfacing with the iOS media library, so instead you write music to the foobar2000 app's sandbox and only fb2k can access it. There is no "automatic" way to do this, but fortunately the iOS fb2k app includes an FTP server that you can use to transfer files via FTP. This is as far as I can tell the best way to transfer music to fb2k mobile as you can't access the foobar2000 app sandbox directly (without jailbreaking your phone).

Of course there's no built-in "sync management" like there is with iTunes, so instead I first use foobar_onewaysync to copy out the relevant playlists (and their associated music files) to a temporary directory, then use WinSCP to mirror that on the iPhone over FTP. So like I said, this is "a bit more involved", but now that I have that flow set up it's as simple as running those two commands and waiting for them to complete.

Like with all things in foobar2000, I have so much more =confidence= in what is happening here with the sync. There would be all kinds of uncommon weird annoyances back when iTunes was in the picture -- you'd find it transferring old files again and again (why?), you'd find that certain songs were missing and showed up on the device but weren't actually playable (why?), you'd find that every time you did a sync one of your playlists mysteriously duplicated itself (why?). I think a recurring theme so far with foobar2000 is that you have to spend some effort setting up your workflow for doing certain things, but once you do, it Just Works.

The REAL main thing I'm losing during the move to fb2k is actually a significant one: it's bluetooth media browsing via the AVRCP protocol. In other words, browsing music via my car's on-board display (or through the controls on the steering wheel). I can still trigger playback and track skips via bluetooth, but any attempts to browse the tracks/playlists/etc from my car's bluetooth interface will result in it looking at the native iOS music library, which is now empty (as all of the music is in foobar2000). This is actually a pretty major loss as it means that I can't really fire up a music playlist in my car unless I'm parked or stopped for a good minute, as I have to actually do that browsing on my phone itself.

As far as I can tell there's no real way around this. foobar2000 used to have an iPod management module but that is looooooooong defunct and iOS tends to be very closed off in terms of these sorts of things anyways. The only way I could really get this functionality back would be to bring iTunes back into the picture, and then use iOS music as my mobile app while still using foobar2000 as my desktop/laptop music player. We'll see if it comes to that, but I don't think it will. foobar2000 mobile is a better media player anyhow, and I don't see an efficient way to sync from foobar2000->through itunes->to the iOS device for anything more than maybe a single playlist.

That being said, what I'm =gaining= in the transition to foobar2000 feels well worth the loss so far:

- A =working= ReplayGain implementation! I now use replaygain to play music at adjusted volumes for normalized listening. iTunes has a proprietary "Sound Check" feature that is supposed to do this but completely fails on VBR-encoded files. This is super useful for social dance DJing in particular as having normalized (normalized as in equal perceived loudness, not as in peaking at 0dB) volumes is pretty important.

- I've customized my UI to include a clickable waveform display that shows the current song progress and can be clicked to seek to any point in the song. Super useful for visually seeking to a given point in the song!

- The ability to work with ID3 tags and file metadata in a very fully-featured and rich way. Want to convert all ID3 tags to ID3v2.3? Want to batch-append a genre or grouping tag to 500 songs? fb2k can do it all!

- The ability to ensure that your media library's files are organized correctly and robustly. iTunes of course attempted to do this automatically, but it wasn't customizable at all and there were a lot of times when it would come up with filenames and/or paths that seemed a little....off. fb2k gives you the option to organize your paths however you want and will give you a preview of what files need to be moved where before actually reorganizing everything.

Anyhow, that's sort of been an ongoing pet project of mine, but I'm basically done with the switch now and have been enjoying not only the new functionality but most of all the peace of mind and robustness that fb2k offers.

Alongside that big customization project, I also spent quite a while looking at mechanical keyboards and finally decided to get myself a pink Filco Majestouch 2!!! I first started thinking about buying a new keyboard when I saw the Razer Huntsman Quartz Pink edition, but after some research I figured that I'd probably be much happier with a less "consumer-y" brand and decided on the Majestouch 2.

Just look at that beauty! It's possible I might replace the keycap color scheme with something a little more exciting in the future, but I'm happy to just try going with the all-pink for now. I decided on Cherry MX 'brown' switches, as I'm not a huge fan of the infamous clickety-clackity noises of the blues, and I'd still like some tactile feedback (so not going with the reds). I also decided to go with a "TenKeyLess" size -- you'll notice that it has the arrow keys and home/end/printscreen/scrolllock/etc but no numpad. Having full arrow keys around I think is still very useful and necessary but I think I can actually live without a numpad as there are only really a few cases where I really use it and I think the prospect of having that additional desk space freed up (and having the mouse be closer to the keys) is pretty exciting. (if I REALLY miss the numpad I could always buy a standalone numpad, but I get the feeling I really won't miss it that much)

Anyways, that should theoretically arrive in a couple days -- super exciting!!!

I've also already gone ahead and got a Quartz Pink Razer Basilisk to go along with it:

Unfortunately for getting an aesthetically-pleasing pink mouse there are wayyy fewer options than keyboards, so it was pretty much between this and the pink Razer Lancehead (which has a symmetrical design), or perhaps a pink Zowie mouse, but that seemed to both look worse and have a worse scroll wheel/etc. (despite being lighter/etc). Razer's Synapse software is.....a bit shady to say the least, but unfortunately that is an evil I ended up having to swallow for now.

On the plus side, the mouse itself is working great. I was previously running a Logitech MX Revolution and this mouse feels more sensitive/smoothly responsive, and the control mapping is actually a step up as well. There's an optional thumb trigger (they give you two different sizes!) that you can use as a modifier to give yourself a whole other set of mappings, so for example thumbswitch + mouse wheel up increases my volume, thumbswitch + mouse middle click triggers a pause/play in whatever media player is open, etc. The media controls also work better than that of Logitech's -- no annoying onscreen display and it is also pretty intelligent about looking for media players to send the command to. I miss having the scroll wheel free-spin function, but I'm fine living without it to be honest.

No bluetooth version so I'm back to having a cord, but I don't actually find myself minding that too much either. Plus, it's got two multicolored lights (one in the scroll wheel and one on the logo display) and I have them set up to react to whatever audio is playing from my computer, which is pretty spiffy as well. If I wanted I could have gotten a keyboard that also has fancy backlighting (basically the corresponding Razer model) but I really didn't consider that a priority, so just the mouse lights will have to do.

Oh, related to mice: I downloaded Smooze for OSX and am happily using it for one thing and one thing only: disabling scroll wheel acceleration! I'm not super against scroll wheel acceleration in theory, but in practice the way OSX handles scroll wheel acceleration for mouse has just never seemed to be sensible for any mouse I've used (maybe it's different for an actual apple mouse). Now that I've completely disabled it, I can go back to sensible scrolling, yay!!!

In other news, our game Goodnight Meowmie has gotten quite a lot of attention since I posted it on itch.io, which is really great to see, especially because I feel like this is the most significant game I've ever worked on. It's gotten about 2.5k views on itch since I threw it up there, which is pretty amazing. It's also been really cool watching people's video playthroughs of it on youtube, seeing their reactions and interpretations of the game. It really makes me feel like we did something worthwhile, that we were able to reach out to people and have them listen to our story, and perhaps take it to heart.

Polar Vantage V Review – Have Polar Made a Garmin Killer?

Polar has had a bit of an underdog status over the last few years. While Garmin has continued its relentless march buffing the Fenix series, and allowing trickle down of features to its other watches, and Suunto releasing and also polishing the Suunto Spartan Series, the offerings from Polar in the M430 and the M600 have looked a little tired.

BUT the Fins have not been sitting wringing their hands, and have been developing two brand new watches: the Polar Vantage V and M series. To be clear, the Polar Vantage series feels like a device born out of a company that knew it had to nail the watch on the first iteration, with the latest 2019 firmware running on the Polar Vantage V they have.

I have worn a Garmin Fenix as my daily watch since the Fenix 2, came out, and feel that the Garmin Fenix 5 Plus is one of the most fully featured sports watches on the market. So it might surprise you to hear that the Polar Vantage V has REPLACED the Fenix 5 as my daily wear watch! Read on to find out why!

Currently, the Polar Vantage V is available in three colours, white, black, and orange. Which I feel is a nice lineup, bright, subtle and colourful.

While I’m normally a fan of yellow straps, I do think that the orange colour and the gunmetal grey case are the sweet spot of the lineup

Let’s be honest here, Polar has been playing catchup in several important areas when it compares to Garmin and Suunto, but they have been playing a lot of attention to the areas where the now practically ancient Polar V800 was really having it’s lunch money stolen. As a result, there are a few salient points that should be raised where Polar has literally leapfrogged their competitors with the Polar Vantage V

Effective integration of a touch screen, in a way that enhances the experience of using the watch

Polar Precision Prime – The Polar OH1 demonstrated that Polar understand how to work with optical heart rate sensors, and have refined this with an additional sensor to be able to assist the watch in knowing it is in contact with the skin

Running power, not integrated, but baked into the hardware. You can also still opt to use Stryd if you wanted/had the device

User feedback, training feedback, with a dedicated widget is excellent

Polar Vantage V Review – Design

So what has Polar put in the box for us?

Inside the box, we have a couple of manuals, the actual Polar Vantage v, a charge cable -nothing really mind blowing

There are two versions of the Polar Vantage V, without the chest strap, and one with the Polar H10 heart rate monitor and chest strap.

As good as the optical HR strap become and the Polar “Precision Prime” sensor is excellent as we’ll see later. Optical HR devices are not able to do R-R variability and thus are still needed for the orthostatic tests, which a key to the advances training features on the Polar Vantage V.

From the front, the Polar Vantage 9 screen sits practically flush with the casing on the black version of the watch, made to feel all the larger with the glass border before the bezel

The Polar Vantage V really ups the style points with the very thin, brushed metal surfaces of the case, which practically disappear when viewed face on

As a result of the rough texture to the metal case, and the slim-line sides, I’ve actually found the Polar Vantage V quite resistant to scuffs and scrapes

Whilst I’ve never really been a fan of touch screens on watches, the Polar Vantage V does make good of the functionality, mainly through scrolling across long menus and some of the very detailed feedback that it displays after a workout.

To be clear, I have no issue per say with touchscreens. The Polar touch screen devices work well, as obviously do the Apple and Samsung touch screen watches. BUT that is because touch is their primary mode of input, and the whole operating system is built around it. Rarely have I seen a half way house that works. I’m pleased to say that the Polar Vantage V touch screen is more of an accoutrement to using the device, rather than the main feature. As such ,I was surprised to see how is adds to the device positively, rather than being an irritation, as I’ve found with similar sports watches such as the Suunto Spartans

Staying with the screen for a moment. The backlight has one setting, on or off. Which is a shame as the brightness isn’t bad, but fractionally brighter would be better from in the sun etc. Additionally when using the backlight in the dark, unfortunately, the illumination isn’t uniform. There are not deal breakers by any stretch, but definitely minor irritations

Back to the controls, on the RIGHT side of the case, we have the three buttons which navigate through the Polar Vantage V. The middle button in red works as a “select” option and also the power button. The two outside buttons mainly act as menu navigation.

If we move to the left side of the watch, there are the openings for the barometer needed for the inbuilt running power. The top button toggling the back light and the bottom watch menu/long press to sync

From the watch face screen, pressing the bottom button will take you through the main menu of the watch: Start Training –> Timers –> Orthostatic Test –> Settings

The Polar Vantage V has an interesting setup for viewing your metrics. Rather than a specific widget menu, you swipe, or click, across the watch face

You scroll through: Standard face –> Activity Tracking –> Training Effect –> Heart Rate –> Training history –> Sleep

The sleep widget face is a good example of the additional data. From this watch face, if you click the central red button, then you are loaded into the previous night’s sleep tracking data

You will get similar deep dive information on any of the other watch screens

If we flip the Polar Vantage V over can see one of the most interesting developments from Polar, their Precision Prime sensor, which is a distinct evolution from their Polar OH1 optical sensor.

The metal dots also work as the contact pads for the charger. There is a small magnet in the charger that helps the dock align to the back of the watch, and a little notch on the left the watch interfacing in the charger

The band on the Polar Vantage V can be removed, but it is not a quick release strap, and crucially can’t be used interchangeably with the Polar Vantage M stars

So that pretty much covers the overview of the Polar Vantage V, but what is it like to use?

Polar Vantage V Review – Specification

Screen Resolution: 240×240 – with Corning Gorilla 3 glass

Weight: 66g

Bezel: brushed steel (as this matters to some people)

Communication: BlueTooth LE – no ANT+ here, which will always be a deal breaker for some

Sensors: Altimeter, Digital compass, Optical Heart Rate, GPS, GLONASS

Battery – 320 mAh – Up to 40 hours training with GPS and optical heart rate

Waterproofing: 30 m – not as much as some of the other units, but in keeping

Activities: >80

Standard features: Corning Gorilla 3 glass, GPS, Valencell HRM, 24/7 activity tracking, HRM works with swimming

While it is only a very small thing, due to using the Corning Gorilla Glass 3, Polar has a hydrophobic coating on the glass surface of the Polar Vantage V, something which I find makes the screen easier to view both in the pool, and if you end up doing a run in the rain!

Polar Vantage V Review – Using the Watch

As with every sports watch, the first step is to download the corresponding app. In the case of the Polar Vantage V, you are looking for Polar Flow – Here for iOS and here for Google. You’ll still need to sign up to Polar Flow, in order to get access and more importantly download the latest updates for the watch before you use it for the first time. This is very important, as mentioned previously there were some rather big holes in the Polar Vantage V when the device first came to market. As far as I’m concerned about releasing a smart watch in 2019 without smart notifications is just not acceptable – thankfully resolved now! – You can also update via the desktop apps

It’s really worthwhile pointing out two things, i) Polar is very honest about their estimated sync/update times when updating via the phone app ii) sync/updates can be a little slow if it says 15 mins, it means 15 mins. Go and grab a coffee

The main reason for the delay in this review coming out, is because I was waiting for the second major firmware update which brought with it the significant features of GPS Route Guidance and smart notifications (how someone can launch a phone WITHOUT notifications today is utterly beyond me)

When the new firmware landed, it also seemed to bring with it a Bluetooth bug, meaning the watch needed to be restarted frequently at least once a week. You can normally tell that the communications have fallen over as the watch will say it is not connected to your phone.

Won’t connect to other sensors either.

Yet will still receive smart notifications – certainly an odd one

Similarly, I’ve had several episodes where the Polar Vantage V would just curl up and die. – Edit this seems to have been resolved with the Late Feb firmware update

Polar Vantage V Review – Smart Watch Features

After the recent firmware update, the Polar Vantage V notifications can go toe-toe with the best in class. Now you’ll get all the Facebook birthday reminders and other daily distractions directly to your wrist

When an alert comes into your phone, the watch gives a small buzz, at which point, if you raise your arm you the watch activates, and displays the smart notification. The Polar Vantage V does NOT have the option for smart previews as we’ve seen from other Polar devices in the past. You either have notifications or not.

If you have missed the little buzz to tell you there is an alert, then on the watch face a bouncing red ball appears at the bottom of the screen. If you swipe up using the touch-sensitive display, it will bring up the notification and the notification menu.

If you scroll down to the bottom, there is also the option to clear all existing notifications. This is not restricted to phone notifications. Any alerts from the Polar Vantage V, such as a reminder to do your morning orthostatic test, will also appear here.

The Polar Vantage V also has limited two-way communication with your phone, allowing you to see who is calling, and dismiss them if need be. It’s my sister, so of course, I’ll ignore that call!

Similarly given the two-way functionality, I do miss the “find my phone” option from the Garmin Fenix 5.

From a smartwatch perspective, i.e. a watch that something will live on your wrist most of the time, smart alerts, are thankfully not very intrusive. I say this, because there is no easy way activate a “do not disturb” mode on the Polar Vantage V other than going into the Polar app on the phone or digging into watches menus system, which is touch surprising as you can lock the watch simply with a long press of the top LEFT button?

Initially, I found the lack of smart previews a little annoying; I couldn’t just glance at my wrist and see what is going on – for one thing, the “rise to view” function can be a touch flaky at times. HOWEVER the longer I used the Vantage, the more I came to realise that NOT having the smart previews was actually less disruptive for me. I’ve found devices such as the Fitbit Charge series which merely alerts you to say there is a message slightly useless. The Polar Vantage V falls into a nice middle ground where the control over the notifications is returned to you.

Polar Vantage V Review – Activity Tracking

The Polar Vantage V has just one watch face, ok that isn’t fair, you can opt for digital or analogue faces but that is it. Instead, the data displayed varies around the watch face. You can see that with the activity tracking page

As mentioned above, the activity tracking on Polar Vantage V is quite straightforward. You activity simply goes to fill up the outer circle of the screen as you potter about your day.

If you hit your goal, in my case of the default 10,000 steps, the Polar Vantage V will buzz to alert you. But nothing further. If you want to dig deeper into your activity, as mentioned above, you hit the red button on the RIGHT of the screen. Giving your step count and calorie burn

I’m a big fan of the new training load status, and the additional data it brings. Polar clearly understand I am going to be much more motivated when I can constantly see my training load, and more horrific if I’ve had a busy week and it slips to detraining!?!

Training load is comprised of cardio training load, in addition to muscle load and perceived effort. As such I have found this element of the Polar Vantage V, much more effective than Garmin’s move nudges. These are obviously very personal insights, and your own preferences may mean some approach is more or less irritating than another

Further tracking is available as sleep monitoring on the Polar Vantage V. As with activity tracking; you access more data from the specific watch face

Even so, the info on the watch itself a textual representation of the data you’ll see on the app, covering Sleep Time, Actual Sleep and Sleep Continuity

If you sync and look at the Polar app, you get just the same data but with the addition of a sleep graph.

While the Polar Vantage does have 24×7 HRM, this data is not displayed in the sleep section, but in its own part of the app. At least there it is highlighted when you are catching zzz’s

The setup for sleep tracking is relatively minimal, just wear the watch. Polar Vantage V monitors your movement, and when registers the activity pattern associated with sleep, you get the recording. At the time of writing this, I haven’t had the time to compare with the latest Apple Beddit Sleep Monitor, but the Polar Vantage V is providing tracking within 4-7 minutes of the recordings of my existing Beddit Sleep monitor.

In the mornings, you have the option of providing feedback about how you slept

This is probably a good point to talk about the Polar Vantage Precision Prime sensor, as we’ve raised the point of 24×7 HR tracking. At first, glance, naming the sensor the Precision Prime seems a little… well like asking for trouble. Then you start to break is down.

Polar has basically redesigned things from the ground up when you compare with the Polar OH1 sensor

The Prime is comprised of five pairs of LEDs, and four sensors. It is difficult to see on the above picture, but each pair is comprised of a green and red LED. However Polar has found that the central pairing is not required, and to increase battery life has disabled one of those LEDs

Normally sports watch makers don’t actually shout about the accuracy of their optical HRM, as the chest strap has been the gold standard. Polar if sufficiently confident that they have designed a sensor accurate to within 1BPM of the true value.

The accuracy of heart rate monitor: ± 1% or 1 bpm, whichever larger. The definition applies to stable conditions.

Very impressive, but still not sufficient to remove the need for the Polar H10 for orthostatic testing

The reason Polar has needed to spend this much effort in developing the Prime in that movement artefacts are the big headache for optical HRM units. There are a lot of sources of noise when it comes to simply use light to measure capillary blood flow. Thus Polar has leveraged the charging dots on the Polar Vantage V to provide a filter function to the HRM calculation algorithm. The metal dots allow the watch to determine the strength of the skin contact.

The better the contact, the less external light will be hitting the sensors, and the less noise filtering required, further filtering is determined from the accelerometer to try to deal with motion artefacts. Difficult to achieve, but seemingly to be effective, perhaps Polar wasn’t over selling things with the Polar Precision Prime namings

It is going to be interesting to see how the competitors respond if nothing else

Polar Vantage V Review – Cycling

Let’s look at cycling as the first sport with the Polar Vantage V. Press and hold the red button to shortcut to your last sport. So here cycling. That first launch screen confirms everything is good to go. HR locked (green circle), GPS searching (red circle), bike sensor (red so searching).

The GPS+ GLONASS chipset acquired lock quickly, if fractionally faster than the Garmin Fenix 5. Given a shared chipset with Suunto, the acquisition time was about the same!

Once all set, hit the red side button again and enjoy the ride!

How did the optical HRM do for Polar?

Well, certainly a mixed bag there! Vibration from cycling is notorious for interfering with wrist-mounted optical sensors… so it is interesting to see if the metal contacts of the Polar Precision Prime have been effective. Certainly, the Polar Vantage V agrees with the 4iiii and Wahoo TICKRFit, both of which are protected from road vibrations to a greater degree. The Garmin Fenix 5 was alright at the start, and then clearly got lost.

Thankfully on zwift, things are better

Also of note, as this is the first activity we’ve done, when you have completed your work out, you get a recovery advisor which pops up at the end of every activity telling you when you are good to go again

This is based off both your current efforts, or training load, but also the feedback from the orthostatic tests

You can actually set the Polar Vantage V to set reminders in the morning, which can actually be quite helpful when I’m half dead brushing my teeth in the morning!

As mentioned the Polar Vantage does need to be connected to a chest HRM which is able to R-R variability to determine your recovery status. About 45 secs lying down, then standing up, and waiting to see how long it takes for your heart rate to return to resting

You need to provide the Polar Vantage V feedback on your muscles, energy levels and sleeping at the end of the test, whereupon it will give you feedback on your training load if possible, or tell you to test more often

Polar Vantage V Review – Running

To my mind Polar have previously released the best focused running watch with the Polar M430 – yes it doesn’t have the bells and whistles of the current generation of watches, but for the price, a great bit of kit. With the Polar Vantage V, Polar have taken that great running pedigree, further enhanced the optical HRM, and now added wrist-mounted running with power!

During a run, you have access to various metrics, time elapsed, pace, distance, heart rate, altitude and now power. Which is initially set up on a different data field page

The initial screens set out on the device are all clear and very legible for the most part, and well, more importantly, they are logically set out.

All of which is quite good, it isn’t, however, possible to adjust the fields on the device, but you can easily make the changes from the Polar Flow app as long as your phone is with you. To get the Polar Vantage setup, just as you want, does take a bit of extra work compared to other devices – particularly Garmin’s Fenix

Oh, something else you might notice on the above pictures “HR visible to other devices” this is only possible on certain gym equipment, and much to my annoyance, not on my Garmin head units, or on Zwift.

OK, but enough of the setup, sometimes a run can be overly complicated! To the fields!!

I’ll be honest I really prefer having the powered running built right into the watch, and no need to sideload apps etc. Yes, I might not have more detailed information on the run, that Stryd gives such as GCT while running along, but for the price, the inclusion of power alone is going to make the Polar Vantage V a device of considerable interest for many

At the end of a run, you get a breakdown of your power zones on watch; such is the level of integration with the Vantage. I think it is quite fair to say that the power function here is given equal time to that of heart rate monitoring

But pretty graphics are only so good. What is the quality of the data?

Much like the Garmin Power Pod, the actual power readings are very different when comparing the Stryd output with that of the Polar Vantage V. HOWEVER the actual traces seem to mirror each other reasonably along the run. We see significant variation compared to the Styrd though

Running with power is definitely here to stay, but it still seems that determining accuracy is still being debated

One thing which IS missing from both the running and cycling functions of the Polar Vantage is Strava Segments. This is another scheduled feature which is still being worked on. Polar does have an amazing device here, but without a doubt, it is being held back by software and firmware developments

So in terms of going for a run, how does the optical HR fair? The Polar Vantage and OH1 align nicely pretty much all the way through. The Wahoo TICKRfit is a touch odd at the start, but after about 1 mins comes in line.

The Garmin Fenix is doing its own thing as ever

It is worth while noting that the graphs have a 2-second smoothing applied to them, to make the trends a touch clearer. When we do that, while we can see that all the heart rate traces (save Garmin) are now within the same ball park. I wonder if one of the reasons for the Wahoo TICKRfit being slightly different as that is was run on the opposite arm?

One of the things which you don’t have to worry about so much with the Polar Vantage is battery life. Again in stark contrast to Garmin user define everything, Polar has the GPS recording fixed at the 1-second rate. You know you are going to get a reliable 40 hours of quality GPS data for that. However, there may be some in the ultrarunner camp who wish that you could sacrifice a little accuracy for greater battery life. This has been my opinion through the whole of the Polar Vantage V testing period. It isn’t perfect, but this watch has been built to do everything well for the average sports person up to amateur triathlete

Polar Vantage V Review – Swimming

Polar has matched Suunto here, bringing optical HRM into the pool. The Polar Vantage V does seem to lag a little compared to the Suunto, and similarly is reading ~10BPM low.

When in the pool, again the screens can be customised, but have all of the information most people want right at the start. Unfortunately, that customisation doesn’t really run to any useful swimming metrics

When you go for a pool swim, before hitting start there is an options menu which will allow you to select your pool length – either from the default 25m, 50m, and 25 yard and 50-yard pools, or custom pool size from 15 m all the way to 330m!!!

Then you do the whole splish splash thing. Given the limitations of the Polar Vantage V display when in the pool, it is an interesting surprise to find considerably more detail when you return to the Polar Flow on a desktop

We’ve got what I would consider all the missing data! Strokes/min, Swolf, the software even does an attempt at interpreting your stroke type. I think the lack of recording any front crawl says more about my lack technique post fracture rather than the monitoring of the Vantage V!

Polar Vantage V Review – Routing

With the 3.0 Firmware, along with smart notifications, we also received Routes and Back to the Start functionality.

Let’s deal with Routes on the Polar Vantage V.

You can go to any of your normal route creation sites. Or grab an existing route on Strava, and upload it to Polar Flow as a Favourite. Unfortunately, You don’t appear to be able to designate a past workout as a favourite on the Polar Flow App

A Favourite, such as a Route is activated from either the Favourites menu, or the cog when you open up a training sport

From there select your training plan, or Route

You will then be given the options of Start Point –> Mid-Route –> End Point to reverse direction –> Mid-Route to reverse direction

If you are starting the route midway through, you’ll be directed to the route via the shortest possible distance, which may not actually be possible!

You don’t get a map on the Polar Vantage, and you are literally following a previous GPS path. As long as you acknowledge that, things should be ok

You shouldn’t go too far wrong even in the middle of fields. If you did end up wandering off, you’d get appropriate prompts ‘On Course’ and ‘Off Course’ etc. to pull you back the course

Polar Vantage V Review – Conclusion

Polar has clearly done a lot of work to build a great first launch device. I think it is quite telling though that Polar still kept the M and V titles for the Vantage brand, melding together the M430 and V800 lines. I think that this new line may turn out the bit the hit that Polar needs

While I’ve been writing this review, I’ve had a series of little irritations with the Polar Vantage V. Pet peeves which just niggle, which make you think, no, I’m going to go back to my regular Garmin Fenix. But then you realise what is actually going on here

I think that the fact the Polar Vantage V “only” goes down to 30m water resistance is in keeping with the whole watch. The Vantage doesn’t QUITE have the reach of its competitors, but is MORE than good enough for 98% of the user base – do I actually need a watch which will go to 50m? NO!

More importantly, shock news – The Polar Vantage V has pushed my Garmin Fenix 5 Plus from my wrist as a daily wear. If I want to do specific training – such as with the Stryd and GCT data, I’ll return to the Fenix – and a chest strap, as that Garmin Elevate optical HR is terrible.

Overall the Polar Vantage V is just slightly more polished from a watch perspective than the other alternatives on the market, and has fewer significant irritations – exterior scratches less than the Suunto Spartans, reliable optical HR, unlike the Garmin units:

Yes the Garmin Fenix 5 Plus is technically a superior device, (or should that be more capable?) but I’ve found the Polar Vantage covers 95% of the things the Fenix does which really matter to me – onboard device MP3 doesn’t matter to me, I have NEVER once used Garmin Pay, I don’t have any ANT+ only devices now and the Garmin IQ app/ watch faces I can easily live without. No, it is NOT perfect, so only 4/5 TG stars, but definitely a recommended device. With a bit more firmware development Polar should have a run away success with the Polar Vantage V, and as far as I’m concerned the pending Strava Segment firmware, due later in 2019 will make this a 5/5 watch
