Was Sawa-sensei really the only argument Yagami had? The answer may shock you
So, few people know that I fucking despise this take. It's been fun and still can be fun to me sometimes, but as time goes, I see more and more people thinking that unironically and even hate Yagami for this, among other things.
(Huge spoilers for both games ahead. Obviously.)
And I do a lot of (over)thinking myself, as I am writing a looong fic (first three chapters already live on ao3, sorry for shameless promo), and I always love to delve into characters' motives in canon events, goes with writing exclusively canon compliant things of course, and adding to my ever existing brainworms. Moreover, I'm revisiting Judgment atm for the first time since early 2020 if I'm being correct? And I see a lot of things I've forgotten which give lots what has happened in Lost Judgment pretty damn much sense. The Sawa argument is among these things.
First things first, what was the takeaway of the first game for Yagami? His trauma at first was that he fucked up bad and felt he had lost some crucial evidence that Okubo was actually the killer, but during the events of the game it transforms into "I haven't done anything to get to the truth". His trauma, as well Kuwana's, has its core in their inaction during the critical events of their lives. They were never the same again because they didn't do anything while they could, and yes, in that regard they are wounded in the same way.
How have they both responded? In a similar way. Yagami swore to always get involved there he can do something to change the situation before it escalates. Kuwana does the opposite, he tries to punish for the mistakes already made. (Which is funny considering that Yagami as a lawyer dealt with consequences while Kuwana as a teacher had the power to navigate people's lives to prevent the same mistakes, but it's the whole other theme in itself, and has little to do with the initial one.) Let's focus on Yagami though.
The only reason why Yagami repeatedly gets involved on his own in the Lost Judgment plot time and time again, though literally nobody asked him to do so, is the lesson which he learns in the first game. He says explicitly that he wants to get to the bottom of things, and not forget about cases when a trial is done. That's the reason why he doesn't want to be a lawyer again and why he can never be one again, not full-time at least.
And then Sawa gets murdered. Yagami draws parallel to Terasawa Emi (because of course he does) and is determined to bring everyone who is responsible for her death to the light. For now, it's Soma, the direct murderer, and Kuwana, which made Sawa the connecting thread between his crimes. Yagami realizes that Sawa's death was a tool for everyone to get what they wanted, like Emi's. He references it here:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
At this point, Yagami has no proof to think otherwise. He thinks that everyone has forgot about Sawa and that she shouldn't have died. The very least Yagami could do, is to make sure everyone will answer for what they did to her. He sees that Kuwana feels guilty and quite shitty that the student which he thinks so highly of was murdered. Kuwana feels responsible, and Yagami knows that someday he will break.
I think it's also important to say that at no point of LJ has Yagami says anything remotely identifying the goal of his words and actions as "murder bad", but that's more obvious than anything else though requires explanation too if I'm to be believed that Yagami isn't after justice for all the murders.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This whole scene is the Sawa argument summarized, but if you look closer, it is really the only beef he has against Kuwana.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
BTW he's not as goody two shoes as you prefer to see him in LJ, if his "I get how you feel" doesn't convince you.
Tumblr media
And then the one person Kuwana is determined to do anything for has betrayed him, right before Yagami's eyes. What does Kuwana do? Abandon Yagami when Soma has said to his lackeys to do anything so he wouldn't escape, even murder him perhaps?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Great question, Yagami. This really does contradict everything he has thought of Kuwana since forever. After, instead of a goodbye Kuwana makes sure Soma couldn't stay on the boat longer and kidnap/kill Yagami. RK had no time for that, fleeing was the priority over someone they can find some time after.
First thing Yagami does is visit Kusumoto at the hospital, where he learns she has no regard to Kuwana's life, as long as her son is safe and her crime stays uncovered. Which is fine, I guess, though it's sad because Kuwana would do anything for her and for Mitsuru, but whatever. Ehara doesn't come around too, which also understandable, though Kuwana has risked his life to give Yagami the crucial evidence, he is nothing to him and has already played his part. He is just a tool in his revenge. Wait... What?
Tumblr media
Yes, actually it's Kuwana who is being brushed off as collateral damage by everyone. Everyone he has helped actually. And he hasn't come clean during the time before Ehara's trial (he at least could leak the information or point to the body without endangering himself, idk) nor he disappeared to save his skin.
After the trial he thanks Yagami for helping Ehara (which Kuwana wasn't able to do himself) and points to his, and Kawai's body, location. Kuwana knows damn well he can die, but getting to the one who murdered Sawa is more important to him. So, Kuwana has no one on his side, even himself.
No one is going to save him. Sure, he isn't as innocent as Emi, he has fucked some shit up. Does he deserve to disappear for good and be forgotten, or even worse, be remembered as a psycho teacher who killed his student? Yagami doesn't think so. All Yagami sees is that Kuwana desperately tries to protect everyone who did everything right or did nothing at all, every victim of bullying. He has no other motive.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yagami takes no shit from Kuwana, he isn't afraid or angry when Kuwana threatens to blow up the warehouse (as Sugiura and Higashi for example). He knows that Kuwana isn't capable of killing anyone who doesn't deserve it, he takes no pleasure in murder and doesn't do it for personal gain. Yagami, Kaito, everyone else aren't guilty of anything which deserves death as punishment.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If not for the gang, he would set off the bomb though, I'm 100% sure. But that's besides the point.
So, returning to the question: Was Sawa-sensei really the only argument Yagami had? An answer is yes. Because he really doesn't fucking care bullies are being murdered, slay worstie. But it's not because he's such a crappy lawyer, but because he realizes the importance of a person's life above everything else. And a person who cares is not necessarily stupid or unprofessional.
You can argue all you want who was right and who was wrong. It doesn't matter for the characters.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It was never about justice. They don't argue from a legal point of view. It was about remembering about the importance of a person's life.
I beg you to look at this story from another perspective. Not as a technical coldly-perfect story it should've been. People are imperfect, and Yagami, first and foremost, a person. A person who cares. And JE with LJ as stories can be imperfect... but also realistic.
Terasawa Emi is murdered for the greater good. Sawa is murdered for selfish reasons. Kuwana is almost murdered for the both. I can't imagine Yagami would want to go through lots of red tape to do something someday. He does this something right now. Because the lives of people, living and breathing, should be protected right now and valued above what's right legally.
Tumblr media
Please, stop looking at fiction as something which should be perfect, or make more sense, be more logical and emotionally detached than the real world. Some can be like that, but Judgment hasn't been from the start.

Note
Salutations.
First off; I would like to thank you for humoring my questions, by far. Having been in the fandom (Death Note) for quite a while can be daunting at times considering how persistent everyone is on certain views that, more often than not, contradicts the canon itself, though I do not mind the originality. Some of the questions you might remember answering from me would be;
1. How unfair it is for everyone in this fandom to go full autobiography mode on Light Yagami but wrote a piss poor characterisation of other characters.
2. L would not enjoy fighting for Justice under Light's idea
There might be more, but these two are the ones that I remember writing and asking.
I rather enjoy reading your point of views. Being an avid Lawlight shipper myself (which you might found dissapointing, and for that, I apologise) I found it rather... boring that most, if not all, were very insistent that L would join Light's side if given the opportunity while writing him very, very poorly. I enjoy these two through the energy they emitted while actively going against each other. Not when they shook hands and went about it all the same like a carousel ride.
Second: What is your opinion on the whole Wammy's House organisation debacle? On A and B? The whole Successor Programme?
I don't like it. Having being nurtured the same as these children does, I absolutely resented it. Partly because of how harmful the product of the whole environment, largely because of how it reflects the morale ground Quillsh Wammy stood and what he believes in. I despise men in suits, even more so than people in orange jumpers or stripped, black and white outfit.
(Call me E.H. I would like for us to be friends. Mutuals.)
Please, E.H., I would be honoured to be mutuals, but how could you betray me like this? Mid-message? Dropping a bomb of that size on me and my blog?
Seriously, though, I would like that. I will overlook this little flaw of yours, because not everyone can be perfect, and I will accept you with open arms.
Okay. Really dropping the act this time. You don’t have to apologies for shipping them, even though I suppose it was more ironic than anything. I already have mutuals that are like you. I filtered out the various tags concerning L/Light – there are a lot of variations –, and I am fine.
I will survive if I add one more… Hopefully — but I think, in this case, it is more of a “probably”, because you do seem to share some of my views on the whole manga/anime and that means we have some common ground, even though I believe that is not that difficult.
I am really glad you like reading my long-ass posts, because I do enjoy writing it. I actually was waiting for some kind of feedback from you, because, truthfully, I wasn’t sure if your opinions were supposed to be just published without any input from me or if you actually wanted me to say something.
I was both confused (didn’t understand why you decided specifically my blog, since it’s not that well know) and delighted by them.
In any case, I am happy to see this message, especially the last part. You are the first person on here who explicitly stated the wish for my friendship. I didn’t expect that at all. I’ve been told that I seem intimidating, and I still don’t get why, so seeing that someone isn’t put off by this, it’s a nice feeling.
I will now get to your questions, and the post is going to be long, because it’s on a topic that I am actually working on and wanted to do a post of my own, but felt like, “why would people care?”, so I am glad that you do.
PREMISE
I need to do a premise before, because I feel like this is relevant to understanding my opinion.
I would love to kick myself in the face every time I happen to mention it (even though I do so to help my motivation), because it seems that I bring it up so many times and it’s making me annoyed, like, “can this bitch (me) just shut the fuck up already?”. However, it’s important in this context.
I am writing a fanfiction about the Wammy’s House, during L’s years there. And, since I am doing this, my idea of the Wammy’s House is crafted in a way that can make my story work, but I do realize this, so I will try to eliminate all my OCs’ stuff (I think I’ll mention them), even though I still believe that some roles or events I have created can be considered plausible (not canon, of course), because they help explain some things that I noticed about L while reading the manga.
Another thing is that this is a work in progress and while I have an outline for the plot, a lot of things about the Wammy’s are still not definitive. So, everything I say is not set in stone. [This question also made me realise that I made a huge error when it comes to the timeline of my fanfic, which screwed up half of the outline, but thank you.]
Other than this, Ohba left a wide-open door for any interpretation of Watari and the Wammy’s, because he didn’t think too much about them. He just wrote them in for plot purposes and never developed them properly, so anything goes, theoretically, so maybe I will be a bit more lenient on both. I don’t deny the possibility of them being pretty fucked up, because I cannot say that what I think is completely backed by canon. To each their own, but since you have experienced a similar environment, I had to preface this, because my view on it doesn’t adhere to the reality of some of these institutions, and I don’t want you to believe that I’m oblivious to the real-life problems that occur.
I think I took more liberty here, because I had few things to start from, and I’m really fond of the idea that the people (Roger and Watari too) at the Wammy’s were like a family, with its ups and downs (more downs than ups – even in my fic, so I realise that not everything is all peaches and cream). It’s just the wishful thinking of my younger self that so desperately wanted to be part of that world, and I have a hard time getting rid of it.
I must also say that most of my choices regarding the Wammy’s structure and organisation is based on “gut feeling”/intuition. More often than not, I feel if something is right or wrong, even though I can’t pinpoint exactly what’s the reason for that. I just have the impression that something must be in a certain way, and if I don’t comply to this, it just feels uncomfortable until I fix it.
WATARI & ROGER
I want to start from them to explain exactly what I think of these two, particularly their past and what led them to create the Wammy’s.
Reference to another post I wrote – headcanons about Roger – but you needn’t to read it, since I am going to repeat it here, and it talks more about their relationship than the Wammy’s.
In my mind, Watari was both a professor and an inventor. The professor job needed to provide for him before his inventions took off and gave him enough money to live comfortably for the rest of his life, since it seems that he was quite rich, even before L gained something.
So, together with Roger, who was his assistant, he was in close contact with different types of students and noticed the disparity between those who can study and have the resources and those who don’t them but have the abilities to continue. Of course, they couldn’t intervene in the private business of these people. Instead, they discussed knowledge, intelligence, and the social economic situation of England (and later around the world) that didn’t allow young kids, especially orphans, to develop themselves and their abilities, since they didn’t have the means.
Not trusting the state institutions with their money, they decided to take matters into their own hands and had in mind to create an orphanage that had an internal school, so they can provide them resources and knowledge, without making them sacrifice any of those.
But then a dilemma appeared: “what if some kids can learn faster than others and we end up slowing them down?”
[learn faster than others – because “prodigy” doesn’t mean anything when it comes to orphans that don’t have resources or any help from adults.]
And from that dilemma, the Wammy’s House was born. It was a specific type of the institution they had in mind, which was meant for those who seemed more capable than others.
It’s said that Watari owns different orphanages, but they are not talked about like the Wammy’s, so it’s safe to assume the main difference is this one – what kind of kids are there and what they learn.
About Roger, I honestly think that the “he hates kids” was added to have some sort of comedic effect. However, if it was meant to be taken seriously, and I do consider it canon, there are two reasons to me:
He began to hate them, as he continued to work at the Wammy’s, because they pulled pranks on him. He’s not fierce – shown to us by how he responded to Mello grabbing him and how he stopped Mello from bothering another kid. He is quite passive and not confrontational, so I believe he was an easy target for the kids, and he grew to despise their behaviour and to be quite afraid of them in a way, because, while he tried to stop Mello, his attempt was shallow. I don’t think this is because he didn’t care, but because Mello was angry at him, and his explosive nature made him cautious.
Romantic reason: the kids, and especially L, took Watari from him Watari was too occupied with his work that he almost forgot what he and Roger had. That obviously pained Roger and he began to resent the situation and those who stole him and his attention. That would explain why their relationship grew cold, because we don’t see Roger communicate with Watari once, so it means that something happened that drove them apart, aka these kids got in between.
No matter what the reason is, Roger tries to be emotionally distant from them. I have this trope that I associate with him of the grumpy old man having to deal with a kid because of circumstances he cannot control, and he grows attached to them, wanting to protect them at best of his abilities. This is my wishful thinking, but I believe he has those moments in which he thinks, “maybe they are not that bad”, and they then do something that makes him annoyed, and he’s like, “never mind”.
Watari is emotionally not present too, not because he doesn’t want to be involved, but because he is still an inventor before becoming L’s right hand indefinitely and full-time, so he has to fulfil that role and be involved in that community to promote his stuff, to develop it, and etc. Also, the Wammy’s and the other orphanages are relatively new in my opinion, because he first established them when he’s around 40-45, so a few years before L was born, and he has to make sure they all work as he wants to, and he has to make connections so he can find these kids to bring to the Wammy’s. So, he has a lot on his plate. For this reason, if the kids need to talk to him, they have to go through Roger and get a date and an hour for when he is avaliable. Roger says that if it's urgent, they can talk to him, but they are like, "no, thanks", aka they would rather eat cold and raw food for the rest of their lives.
WAMMY’S HOUSE
Location
I have actually thought about this for a long time, and even wrote a post (after I finished this section, I noticed that I was repeating word for word what I had put here, so please, consider reading it for all the reasons).
Littleton, in the north-west part of Winchester.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I know I’m kind of going the extra mile by doing this, but I’ve always done it for every structure I had to write something about, so the Wammy’s gets a real-life location too.
The actual true reason for which I chose this location is because it’s near big fields, and I needed that for plot purposes, but even without considering that, it seems to fit what we know about L’s life there.
He played tennis – there’s a tennis court 20 minutes by foot from there. Relevant that it’s by foot, because I imagined that Watari couldn’t constantly leave the Wammy’s with L for long periods of time and multiple times a week. He had other affairs to attend to, aside from his responsibility at the Wammy’s.
Tumblr media
A’s suicide – there’s a church where he can be buried. It can be reached by foot, so the kids could attend his funeral. I also have a morbid headcanon that B took his body from his grave. I also liked to tie the church to L hearing bells before he dies, so this closeness would make it possible for everyone inside the Wammy’s to hear them.
Tumblr media
Big space – because the Wammy’s seems to be pretty big by the manga panels we have, and I have a specific idea of how it’s structured, both its exterior and interior, so it was necessary to have many hectares available.
Tumblr media
Structure
I made floor plans. I started this a while ago and never actually completed it, because the site I was using was infuriating, but I found an app, and managed to copy what I had done in the other one. I forgot to change the names of the rooms, because I created this to help me visualise the setting of my fic, so ignore them for now (I will point out some names there, just to explain one thing). Don't mind that they are two different sizes, because the app didn't let me make some of the furniture smaller, so I had to enlarge the rooms, so that's why the first floor is bigger.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It’s not definitive, because I still don’t understand where I should put their stairs – or if to put them, ‘cause based on Mello and L’s egos, they already think so highly of themselves that I don’t think they need a staircase to reach the first floor.
In my fic, I didn’t explicitly state where they are supposed to be. I’m letting the readers figure that one out for me, while I just stick to say if they go down or up them. The main problem is not if they should face or not the entrance, because they have to, but where the hell are on the first floor? My gut feeling keeps making me image them next to Lex’s room, but that doesn’t make sense and would be pretty ugly on the ground floor – they would be too close to the entrance, and I hate it. So, I’m just going to ignore it, until it becomes a problem, which I doubt because I’m the one writing this, and nobody is going to police every single detail.
The two unnamed bedrooms on the ground floor are for people that work there (cooks, cleaning staff or the nurse) that can’t go home for reasons.
In my fic, one of the rooms is always vacant, because I imagine that the employees are near the Wammy’s, so they don’t need to stay there, and it is a storage closet, with all of things – costumes and decorations for all kinds.
It’s a pretty big institution. The size of the rooms might not give that away, but it’s big. It has high ceilings, and the classrooms and bedrooms are longer than wider, but they are still very spacious. When I write and imagine it, even it’s from the perspective of small children, I envision everything to be comfortable even for older kids.
I couldn’t add everything I think it has, so I’ll just list them:
A small football field on the left with two benches, so the kids can rest.
Some big trees next the corners of the garden and some bushes here and there.
A stone path from the main entrance to the gate.
A shed on the right, with all the gardening tools.
The interior might not coincide with the way it is portrayed in the manga panels, but I like to imagine that after A’s death and L’s parting, things got restructured and the internal organisation changed.
Internal organisation - from the year it was founded to 1993, so even during L’s years there
I placed L’s arrival in 1988, when he’s about to turn 9, because L is shown to us to be in relatively light clothing in the one-shot “L: The Wammy’s House”, so it can’t be after 31st October. Winchester usually has a high of 11° and a low of 4° in November, and 8° and 2° in December, so I don’t see why he would be dressed up like that.
And 1993, because he says to Light that he stayed in England for 5 years, which also means that he is not from there. I headcanon him to be born in Scotland, because it’s hilarious to think he has a Scottish accent that he hides – “Bang! if Ah was kira, yoo'd be deid.” | “Looks loch someain drapped thes ceel phain in th' crowd earlier.” and so on. It’s so funny. And also, it kind of makes sense why he wasn’t in England before and why he knows standard English. He could also be from Northern Ireland, but he gives me Scottish vibes.
1993 is also the year in which I place A’s death. I don’t follow the timeline from Another Note, because I cannot imagine A and B being younger than L. I’ll talk about this later.
ENTRY
The first requisite for the kids to be brought to the Wammy’s is to show that they are more able than other (as in “able to learn to a faster speed” or show some specific ability), and they usually are kids that were in another orphanage already. Watari has a wide social network and, to me, he’s called by the people in charge of those institutions (that could be his, like he just owns it and is contact with the ones who take care of it) when they realise a kid’s ability. For this reason, rarely there are kids who are very young, and I put that the second requisite is that they have to be at least 5 years old, because the school inside it goes only from elementary school to high school.
Only in exceptional circumstances, the Wammy’s House takes on younger kids, e.g., if they are in danger and the Wammy’s is the closest place where they can stay. However, after everything is settled (a matter of a few days), they are transferred to other orphanages administrated by Watari if they are that young. They still can come back, when they are older, but it’s a lot more work to look after toddlers or pre-schoolers.
After passing the entry exam, all the kids have their own personal folders with all their existing documents – birth certificate, medical records, etc. – that will be given back to them once they leave the Wammy’s House.
While the whole letter system becomes a thing when L appears, the kids still have to choose their alias, because some of them surely have a troubled past and choosing a new name is a fresh start, as if the bad things that happened to them can’t reach them anymore inside those walls. Since making only some choose it would make them stood out, it is implemented as a general rule, and even Watari does it so it isn't seen as a bad thing.
ENTRY EXAM
To enter the Wammy’s House, there is an exam. Since every one of the kids that are sent here is with the idea that they are more able, the admission rate is 100%.
The exam covers different abilities: raging from knowledge the orphan should possess for their age to difficult stuff (this knowledge is chosen based on the national curriculum for students up to 18 years old), and it includes other scopes (e.g., musical, artistic, etc. – to understand if they have an inclination to something or if they are interested in that).
There is also a social part. Since they live into a community, it’s good to understand how to live with others. If they don’t pass this part, it doesn’t mean they get automatically excluded, but it can lower their position a bit.
There is an obvious fallacy, because if they theoretically know how to behave towards others, it doesn’t mean they employ that behaviour. In fact, most of the kids “know” how to act in a community, but they have some behavioral issues, and the higher they are in the grade system, the worse they are. I like the irony I created, so I’m keeping it in.
This exam focuses more on the thought process than the result.
THE GRADE SYSTEM
I created a system made by 6 grades + 1, which is called “Apex”.
All of them have a basic requirement in knowledge.
The first three (1 is the lowest, 3 is the highest) are more socially oriented and coincide to elementary and middle school. They mostly teach kids social skills, so they can work all together to get to a common objective, aka pass the grade. They focus on play, conversation, emotional intelligence and problem-solving skills.
When developing this, Watari thought it would be quite easy to pass it, but he was wrong. He found out that letting the kids try the test – which is, like, a presentation, a competition and a debate – every year created more hatred between them, so he had to add another year, so they could defuse these feelings and make them understand that cooperation is the best option.
The result here is not that important. The most important part is how they got there and how they all behaved towards each other, which should be inclusive. And, while the kids can maybe work better together as a class or big groups and pass the first two with ease, grade 3 is tricky. Not because the curriculum is hard, but because they need to find a person and trust that they are on the same page as them, but not everyone is eager to get to the new grade.
It never happened for someone of the age 13 to still be in the grade 3, so it was never a problem to “what if they remain there until they become 18?”, because Wammy’s existence is short at this point in time, and usually they find someone, but, in case it happens, Watari has a plan B and it’s individual classes to teach them what they should know at their age. They are still in grade 3 and they still have to do the debate with someone else, but if they pass it, depending on how much they have learnt, they can also do the exam to get to grade 5 or skip the classes about the things they already know, because the other three grades (4 is the lowest, 6 is the highest) are more individualistic. They don’t have to work with the others to pass it, so here is more important the result.
The last “grade” is not a grade, but a category. These are those who fulfilled all the requirements and are “free” to do whatever they want. It’s like they finished high school. They are not required to go to class or take some exams, unless they ask to get a degree or a master, in which case, if they need it, a professor is called to assist them and then, an external qualified examinator to test them and their knowledge. But, other than that, they are completely free.
CLASSES AND TEACHERS
Classes are semi-mandatory, and everyone is greatly encouraged to take part to all of them. Watari may even talk to those who deems more needing to be present, which are usually those in the first grades, especially if they misbehave or show anti-social behaviour.
For the first grades, there is one teacher per grade for every subject, since the syllabus is not hard. They are of course specialized in those parts. This choice was made for consistency and to create a great bond with them, since having different teachers might throw off the dynamics that exist within the class.
For the other grades, since the topics are harder, there is a different teacher for subject.
School time is a bit different from the one for the public school:
Youth Month represents the start of summer break.
Classes are resumed in September.
They have all the other breaks like Easter, Christmas and so on.
The classes are from Monday to Friday, and every student has their own timetable that may or may not coincide with those who share their same grade – it depends on what they know already, determined by a test at the end of every quarter.
ACTIVIES
Youth Month
For this, I took inspiration from youth games in Italy, which is basically an event that promotes inclusivity, sport, healthy competition, and social relations.
It’s in May, and every Sunday there is a different activity in which pairs compete. There are two different competitions based on age: 7-12; 13-17.
In 1989, I put that:
May 7: three legs run.
May 14: relay race.
May 21: treasure hunt.
May 27: cops and robbers (the last game is divided into two big groups to give a chance to gain a lot of points for those who didn’t until then).
In 1990, the only change I made is that the third game is table tennis, since it was raining outside.
Holidays
Valentine's Day, Halloween, Christmas, and New Year's Eve are the main holidays that are celebrated inside the Wammy's, because even though I believe that Watari is Christian and the orphanage has an affiliation to Christianity, I don’t think he indoctrinate the kids. That would go against the core of the Wammy’s in my opinion, because kids are supposed to think critically and accepting the existence of God without questioning it is not. They can always turn to that religion if they feel close to it, but it’s not mandatory. They don’t go to Church (imagine two old gay men having to make sure 30+ kids don’t destroy it every Sunday) nor celebrate other very Christian holidays, like Easter. They might have a feast, but it’s not publicly associated to the resurrection of Jesus.
This is a choice I made based on the fact that nobody showcases any belief in any type of supernatural entities. Mello wears a rosary, and it seems more symbolic than him actually believing and practicing the religion. I associate it to his mother, who I like to headcanon as a devoted Christian, since Eastern Europe/Balkans are very, extremely, to a worrying extent religious, to the point that people would rather go to church or call a priest home and pray instead of visiting a doctor to cure any kind of injury.
[Tangent: and the church as an institution seems like the mafia. I happened to be home in Romania when the priest and his helpers had to bless our home and they made us kneel in the dark with torches in hand. We had to kiss his ring and give him money, and it’s not like a voluntary contribution. It’s pretty much blackmailing, because if you don’t “donate”, they have the right to give your place in the graveyard to someone else, and they write it down how much you paid to see if it’s enough when you die. If it is not, your kids or relatives have to pay. It’s wild. It’s not everywhere like this, but the church is quite shady, at least in Romania, and they brainwashed people, especially older ones, to devote everything to them. It's insane.]
Halloween:
I put that a few days before Halloween one of the older kids is appointed to go around the Wammy’s and take notes of what the kids would love to eat (candies) and what they want to dress up as. Everything is done in the realm of possibilities. Watari is going to buy the costumes he can find. Usually, they are passed down from one person to another, so during L’s years, there have been enough requests to have pretty much the ones that are more common, and the only change is to make them fit the new person wearing it. Kids like also to be crafty, like for a mummy costume, they are going to use toilet paper and so on. It’s more about the candies, because he needs to buy something they will like.
In the first part of the day, Watari calls some outsiders to help him decorate the Wammy’s and carve pumpkins into jack-o'-lanterns. Some kids give a hand, but the others are more preoccupied with their costumes.
The party usually starts at 17:30, after they take a group photo under the “Hallowe’en XXXX” banner over their head. They then play games and just do their things, while eating candies and other sweets. At 19, there is a feast. After that, Watari or Roger tell the kids some age-appropriate scary stories, and at 21, Littleton has fireworks, but you really have to be lucky to see them, aka it doesn’t have to rain, and it usually does.
Since trick and treat wasn’t popular in UK until the late 80s-early 90s, I put that the kids at the Wammy’s experienced it for the first time in 1992. Watari didn’t understand it at first, because he was the one to buy candies for the kids, so why would they need to go to someone else? (Poor grandpa, feeling replaced).
Christmas:
I wanted to do something different. Watari doesn’t ask the kids what they might want, but tries to surprise them, showing that he knows them, so that he can make up for all the time he isn’t present, which is a lot. He buys the gifts and places them under the tree in the main hall. After the kids open them, they take again a group photo next to the tree and the kids have all their presents in their hand, showing them to the camera. It’s very cozy and calm holiday. They have a big feast, and the kids are let playing with their new toys. They even watch some Christmas movies.
New Years’s Eve:
Watari doesn’t prepare anything special, other than a feast. There are fireworks, and that's it.
Valentine’s day:
There are two types, for those older than 14 and those younger, because I think the Wammy’s is strict when it comes to romance (mostly about PDA), which is not that serious at that age. But it’s an important part of growing up and they cannot go around fearmongering that liking someone in a romantic sense is bad. That would defeat the purpose of the first 3 grades. If you can’t like someone in that way, then you can’t even get near them, as to avoid the possibility of that feeling to develop.
Generally, everyone gets chocolates and candies, but they are also required to write a nice card to someone else. This person is chosen by extraction – done by Watari, who can pretend that is random, but it’s actually not.
In my fic, they usually write stupid things, like “you are funny”, but some of them get someone they have petty rivalry with, and so they write backhanded compliments, because they can go to Watari and complain about the card, and the sender can just lie that they meant it, that it’s all in good faith.
Those that are older than 14 can ask Watari a gift to buy to someone, but of course, it’s fucking embarrassing to go and ask him that, so they usually just gift their sweets to that person and do a hand-made card for them, if they feel like it. Only those that are braver go to ask him to buy a rose, a special card or something.
Stargazing
I added this activity for the summer break, in which they all gather in a nearby field and look at the sky on some specific days.
Tumblr media
There is also an astronomer called by Watari that can answer their question, but the reason for this was to let the kids feel a bit freer and not confined within the gates of the Wammy’s, especially the younger ones that can’t go to the recreational ground. They can play some games there, but usually they just lay on the ground and talk with each other. There is a telescope they can use.
Recreational ground
There’s a park near the Wammy’s – 20 minutes by foot, but they usually use bicycles to get there.
Tumblr media
Only those age 13 or up can go there. They can’t go alone, but always with someone. If someone age 11 or up wants to go, they need to be accompanied by someone age 16 or up, because those of 13-14-15 might not pay attention to them that much, even if they say, “yes, of course”.
For extra measure, Watari has the numbers of those who live near the park, that can contact him in case something happens. Those under 11 can’t go there under no circumstances. I decided this because the roads that take to the park are not safe for riding bicycles, and there is an age limit for doing that on the road.
Other than the necessary stuff for riding the bicycles, they have a tag with the number of the Wammy’s and a bag with Wammy’s insignia on it, because I did create it. It was just a vision in my mind, but I did a draft using picsart and color, so here you go. It’s not well made, since the lines of the ribbon banner are not straight. The ribbon banner I took from Google had such a bad quality that I could see each pixels (like in the first picture), so I had to draw over the border to make it more full.
The picture on the left was the first version.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The first idea was to have a W with an H behind it, like this.
Tumblr media
But I decided to change it, also because it has all the letters of Watari.
Tumblr media
Everything that is propriety of the Wammy’s House has this on.
SUCCESSOR PROGRAMME
Premise
First and foremost, I don’t like the idea of Watari being the one to impose it on everyone, without any regard for what they want to do, because I think he’s experienced enough with kids to know that you can't just force them to do something. They won’t. You can coerce them by using violence and threats, but none of the kids that we know of showcase any sign of being physically abused.
It’s also important to note that not everyone in the Wammy’s is competitive. Mello is the only one who wants to be at the top. Matt and Linda don’t care, and neither does Near. He is just first because he is that smart. However, this is after.
Competitiveness is more prevalent in the system I had created, because being in the Apex means not having to follow classes or have to listen to teachers. That’s the prime reason for why people want to reach it. It’s not about prestige, because I don’t think the kids, especially younger ones, have that concept wired in their brain. And usually, as a self-preservation technique, people tend to consider negative something they cannot reach/have and that opinion is automatically applied to those who can enjoy it, which makes them want to stay away from it so nobody thinks that of them, but if they had the chance to join it, they would take it in a heartbeat.
E.g., imagine someone that wants to go to a water park, but they find out that the entrance costs a lot or it’s far away. They are more likely to think, “well, it wasn’t that good to being with” or that it’s only for rich bastards or something, rather than accept that it just happens. They will even talk badly about it to others. However, if they manage to get in, they will enjoy every second of it.
So, in this case, while advancement is okay, getting to the higher position is pretty much a curse, because if you act in a certain way that is redeemed rude, then the reason is considered to be your status.
In my fic, when A and B got in to the Apex, people started to have a negative opinion of them. They have always been on their own, but since they are now reserved AND in the Apex, then it’s because they think too highly of themselves and less of others, which makes people find them some times annoying, even when they are doing nothing wrong. They might still interact with them nicely, but that doesn’t mean they like them.
Secondly, the general theme of the Death Note is that people are responsible for their own downfall in a way, so I’m going to follow that when it comes to its establishment and organisation.
L's idea
Unlike others in the fandom, I consider A and B to be older than L (4 years apart), so the successor programme was first tasted out when L was living there. Decided this because I want him to see what he caused, and for the reasons in the post I hyperlinked.
I have a kind of specific yet not definitive idea of how L’s life before the Wammy’s was. I won’t write all down because I don’t think it’s that important. The only part that is, is the fact that he managed to stop a terroristic attack to get Watari’s attention, because “go big or go home”, and he was the one who decided to establish the successor programme.
Establishment
When he arrived at the Wammy’s, he wanted immediately to get down to business, and asked Watari to talk to the smartest people there: A and B, together.
L introduced the idea for “when I’m away”, as in “when I am taking a break” – because I imagine him to ramble about his career to Watari in the days they stayed together before going back to the Wammy’s and on the 8-10 hours long trip, and Watari pointed out to him that he needed to have time to play/free time, and L said that he was right, that he’d put someone in his place for that time, he’d teach them what he knew, because he was very good at it, he was basically justice itself for how many things he knew – but A and B took that as in “when he dies”.
It was in that moment that L took everything more seriously. They talked for hours. A and B asked him lots of questions about that project, the possibility of that to happen, and how to make sure that it can last for a long time.
And while the conversation started as more of an abstract idea, after L showed them what he managed to do, they were both impressed and eager to learn to be able to do the same. They too had an interest in solving riddles, and… C’mon, it’s cool to be a detective, especially one that was supposed to be the greatest.
They discussed the technicalities and decided not to limit themselves only to two members, so that’s how the successor programme was actually created. It was also A and B to decide their own names, because they said that, since he’s called L, they too should have they own letters, and, while talking, they said, “I would be an alternative” and “if you are that, then I’ll be your backup”, so that’s how they got them.
Basically, it started with L, but A and B became co-owners of this programme in a way, and L didn’t mind it, because they were older than him, seemed wiser, and he looked up to them in a way.
For the others, the letters were chosen in two different ways: the first five smartest people there would be the first letters of the alphabet, while the others would have their own letter based on their real name, because five people were enough.
And I say, “smartest people”, but A and B advised L to look for other qualities other than that, because you can have someone that is extremely intelligent, but if they are extremely reckless too, then that detective persona is doomed to fail.
All three of them talked to kids in grades 4-5-6 and the Apex (in my fic, there are other two people here) about this project, but they weren’t obliged to accept. They let L speak, who explained what they were planning to do, showed them what he did, and gave them the choice to accept or not. If they didn’t accept, they would ask them to not divulge the information they discussed. In my fic, no one actually says no, because they think it’s awesome.
In case they accepted, he granted them a wish, something that he would fulfil, so that, if they wouldn’t get chosen, at least they wouldn’t think they wasted time. It’s a quality I noticed in L, while reading the manga. I explained it in my long post about the characters: he compensates his actions, which I think it’s something he picked up as he started to be interested in solving cases (before he arrived at the Wammy’s), because he saw what criminals had to do after they got caught doing something bad, and wasting people’s time is bad.
So, everyone had a choice and L, initially, worked mostly with the first five people in the successor programme, but not immediately.
In my fic, there is the MC that tries to destroy him and his project, but even without her, it makes sense that he would take time, years even, to make sure this project can operate without any vulnerabilities. He’s far-sighted and took things more seriously, thanks to A and B’s inputs, so he wanted to create a solid foundation for this detective persona and the project.
However, he didn’t spend all his time thinking about that, because he is also a child, so he experienced a bit of his childhood: he participated in Wammy’s activities, played with the other kids, spent his time picking and giving up interests, etc. He even had tennis practices and tournaments, so it’s not like he just solved cases. He still did – smaller ones – but not all the goddamn time. He was also into stocks, and he had to pay attention to that too.
To me, he started when he was 12-13 to solve them periodically, but not publicly, just to have some credibility in the eyes of England’s law enforcement, that could then recommend him to other national law enforcement, slowly building up his empire.
There wasn’t this urgency or this pressure to be like him. It was like a long-period plan that still had to show its fruits. L wouldn’t even tell all the members everything he solved – just the first five, because he would give them the case files to practice their skills.
ALTERNATIVE / A
So, he was older than L and participated to the establishment of the successor programme.
For the first years, he didn’t actually think too much about it, but as he was slowly approaching being 18, he started to have doubts about his abilities, because, as said before, L gave him case files to solve and he wasn’t able to get any of them entirely right. He still didn’t want to admit defeat and be a disappointment in the other eyes’, so he tried times and times again. This had an impact on his mental health, of course.
L noticed this change in attitude and told him that he can switch places with B. He had no problem with it, but A, instead of admitting that he wasn’t fit for the position, preferred to argue with him, damaging their relation.
The situation was really heavy for him, and since telling the truth was worse than anything else, his first attempt to leave it was by running away from the Wammy’s. That didn’t go well, because B, with a group of people there, managed to find him. A invented some kind of excuse, that he was being followed and didn’t want to bring them to the orphanage. B didn’t buy it, and they too started to argue.
So, in that case, telling the truth was worse than death and he couldn’t bear the idea of being a complete failure, and killed himself.
That’s how I see how things went, more or less. And L was blamed for it. The successor programme was interrupted, and some of them decided not to participate anymore, even though they could always return, once and if it would be resumed.
L left the Wammy’s the same year, before turning 14, which is important, because B kills a 13-years old girl by bashing her head, and that what I think he wanted to do to L (in my fic, it’s him and the MC, but whatever) at that time, but couldn’t.
In my fic, A’s name at the Wammy’s is Natal, because it means birth/birthday. And B’s name is Elioenai, which means “towards him are my eyes”. Now, this can have different interpretations: the “eyes” could mean the Shinigami eyes and “him” could be Natal, or L. I am not sure how much I consider him having the Shinigami eyes to be canon. It’s an interesting concept, but I don’t understand how that would be possible, like what led to that and what else does it mean for B? Is he part Shinigami? Or his mother had wild sex with a Shinigami, that then got some type of punishment by the King, because it’s against the rules?
I don’t know, so I don’t count them as canon, to be honest. Cool, but I don’t get it.
For me, Beyond Birthday means also “After Natal”.
BEYOND BIRTHDAY / B
I don’t believe he went completely insane after A’s death. In my mind, he was always kind of shady, ruthless, based on survival instinct and self-preservation. He had an attachment to A, but he had no problem to consider him also a tool that he could use and then discard, if he needed to. He loved him, but he always prioritized himself, at the end of the day.
I associate to them the betrayal trope - Was It All a Lie?
If things went differently and A became L, that would not last long, because B would kill him so that he could succeed him, and nobody would question it, because they wouldn’t know what truly happened.
A’s death screwed up his plan and blamed L for it. He wanted to take his place, but he first needed his detective persona to be well established. He let L do the hard work to create it. A mostly gave some inputs to help him, while B supervised it, to make sure that everything was going according to his plan.
Since A was chosen as first successor, he couldn’t convince him to switch places, because he didn’t want him and L to have the impression that he really wanted that.
He honestly believed that L would be the first one to crack, because he was younger, but when A died and the project stalled for an indefinite period of time, he couldn’t take it. He planned his life to go in a certain way, but now L wouldn’t work as L anymore for an indefinite time, making no progress, and the project was a big question mark, without any information on when or if it would be resumed? That made him see red.
If he couldn’t become L, then nobody deserved it, and he decided to impersonate L and ruin his career. If he had managed to kill himself in Another Note, while Misora still believed him to be L, then that would’ve had irreparable damages to L’s credibility (Misora would tell Raye, who would tell to the FBI, and etc.), and L would’ve needed a lot of time to get that trust back.
That’s one of my interpretations of the LABB case, because I can’t really explain why B decided to that. We take for granted that the Another Note is canon, given also the praise by Ohba, but… It’s not. I have a hard time to consider things about L published after the manga conclusion canon, because they usually follow the fandom’s reaction. I consider the two one shots about Near canon, because Near has never had the same kind of fanbase L did and does, so it’s easy to not be influenced by what other people think.
In Another Note’s case, it’s also written by someone else and, even though it might be weird to say it, it’s a fanfiction in my eyes, that Ohba considers canon because he is lazy, and couldn’t come up with any type of case L solved. He said that himself.
I pick and choose, basically. I could also throw Another Note out the window, with A and B, and pretend they don’t even exist, and I wouldn’t be “wrong” in doing so, but I like them, even though some parts of the novel leave me confused, because it contradicts the canon.
AFTER A'S DEATH
I haven’t thought about this too much. I have just a general idea of the fact that the orphanage got restructured in some way, but don’t know what exactly changed. It’s just my gut feeling telling me that, as well as saying that the grade system got replaced by a simple graduation list, who ranked the kids based on points they gathered during the year by doing tests, and etc. Can’t go in-depth, because there is nothing here that I actually explored. It isn’t important in my fic, so I haven’t paid too much attention to that. I might start to think about it in the future, but I still want to submit my answer.
It gets tricky when it comes to who decided that Mello and Near are meant to be his successors. It makes sense that it would be something imposed to them, but they seem to want it. Near takes on the title of his successor and even tells Light that he is that, meaning that he does not despise it. Mello clearly wants to be the best, and the best in his eyes is L, and I think this is due to the fact that L, during their time, is an established figure in the world and they want to be like him. He came from the Wammy’s, which tells them that they can reach that level of grandiosity.
In the 2013 “It’s not about justice" one-shot, it said that some of the kids lose respect for L and keep their distance, so it is not mandatory for everyone to be part of the successor programme. Maybe even here, it’s mainly for the best in the institution, so that position was offered to Near, Mello and Matt (third in line).
Mello accepted for obvious reasons. Near because he likes to solve puzzles. Matt because, “yeah, why not”, but never believed that he would ever end up actually taking on that role, because Mello was in front of him.
Here, they are not given letters in an alphabetical order, so there isn’t a first or a second for L’s position (it exists only inside the Wammy’s), and it ties well with what I said before about A and B. A felt like he needed to become L and couldn’t back down or ask for help because he was "A", but now, who feels fit will take on L’s role and can also work with the other, without feeling like they need to do things alone.
I doubt L would make the same mistake twice and impose such job on only one person. Besides, I don’t think L believed to die that young, so while they taught them some important skills to be a detective, the idea was that they will become L later in life – in their 40/50s. Unfortunately, L died young and so even the successors were young.
Maybe it’s just naivety on my part, and the interpretation of the majority in this fandom of the Wammy’s House, Watari and the Successor Programme is more accurate than mine.
Of course, characters’ individual experience of the Wammy’s can be absolutely horrendous and they are not fond of the institution, but I don’t think Wammy’s House was born or became as something meant to create copies of L, especially because Near and Mello’s, as well as Matt and Linda’s, personalities and thought processes aren’t a carbon copy of his. They are their own people, in some way.
That’s all I had to say. I think I wrote enough to get a grasp of my idea of everything, even though there are some parts that I did not disclose or aren’t definitive. So, keep that in mind – I might as well wake up one day and decide to consider Wammy’s a factory of Ls, that resembles the common depiction of Hell in cartoons, but I highly doubt it.
Hope you like it. Let me know. And thank you for the ask, as always.
I kept thinking who you might be, based on when you sent the asks and my notifications around that time – maybe to find a correlation (e.g., you read something I wrote and thought of talking about that) – and I identified some accounts. Some of them are mutuals, that I can now exclude. The other non-mutuals that ship L/Light but have views that are different from yours. So, when I said that maybe I know who you might be, I think I was wrong, so I am quite curious to find out the truth.
Take care, E.H.

whats your favourite thing about each of the onk characters?
As a person with ADHD I am ontologically incapable of picking Just One Thing but I'll do my best!!
Ai: oh my god she melts my brain too much to pick just one thing!!! If you really put a gun to my head though I would have to say her warm, persistent kindness in the face of a life that has often been abnormally cruel to her. She always goes out of her way to be kind to people even when it has absolutely no benefit to her, just because Ai is a deeply kind person that even abuse and neglect couldn't tarnish. She understands loneliness and abandonment to such a deep degree that even when she can't exactly understand the ins and outs of why or how other people feel the way they feel, when she sees people suffering or in pain, her instinctive response is to reach out to them and try and make sure they feel heard even if she can't actually do anything to ease their pain. For all the BS she says about calling herself cynical, people hating and all the rest of it, Ai is such a deeply and actively kind person to such an incredible degree.
Also her fangies. Can't forget the fangies.
Aqua: Aqua Hoshino Is The Funniest Guy In Oshi No Ko And He Doesn't Even Know It. This sort of falls under the more serious header that is the cavernous gap between Aqua's stated goals and intentions and the reality of his actual feelings that often slips out via his actions but more specifically I'm obsessed with the hysterical comedic gap that is Aqua larping as Light Yagami during season 1 of Love Live. Like ugh yeah I have to kill my dad but what am I gonna do, NOT wear matching TWINS tshirts with my sister? Or shit like him being the one to go and get his copy of Sweet Today and start paging through it while Ruby and Miyako watch it and then immediately tattling to Kana that Ruby talked shit even though he toooootally doesn't care you guys :/// Mfer dressed up like a buff chicken and did a squeaky voice for a week because he can't handle having a crush on Kana!!! HE'S THE FUNNIEST GUY IN THIS WHOLE SHOW AND NOBODY UNDERSTANDS Ruby: The way Ruby's history as Sarina - or I guess more specifically, as a person who grew up both disabled and under a toxic mother - informs her zest and energy is soooooo sweet and tender to me, but especially in the ways in informs her deep, deep love for Ai as her mother. The inheritance of Sarina's despair and its transition into Ruby's joy and empowerment is such an incredible and powerful beat - I watched episode 1 with a friend last night (hi Silvie!) and the scene of Ruby realizing that she no longer lives in a body at risk of betraying her at any moment and that she has a mother who loves her and values her happiness and positive growth over all else is still one of the most powerful scenes in the whole story for me. The way that realization of euphoria and power continues to form the foundations of her arc going forward is a big part of why the first stretch of the manga is still the strongest material to me.
Kana: my little failgirl <3 Kana is another one of those characters where I could say a lot of deep and introspective things about her incredible resilience, her intelligence and determination and the way she continues to try and make herself big in a world that has only ever operated by making her feel small but the truth in my heart is just that I think she is the funniest bitch on the planet. If Aqua did not exist she would take the crown as Funniest Character In Oshi No Ko. The consistency with which she takes Ls and gets fed her own hair emotionally speaking (UH AND LITERALLY I GUESS BECAUSE I WROTE THAT JOKE AND THEN REMEMBERED THAT SCENE WITH THE DIRECTOR) just really gets under my guard and makes me fucking lose it every time it happens. I'm a simple guy, ok? Memcho: Mem being a woman in her early 20s and the perspective and emotional intelligence that comes with that experience, especially when contrasted with the teens, is soooooo fascinating to me. In general it's just really refreshing to see a girlie in her mid 20s in an anime still being portrayed as just as fun and cute and silly and energetic as the teens; anime in general has a really bad habit of having two ages which are Teen and Middle Aged Adult but Mem just feels like an actual person in her mid 20s which is SUCH a nice change. I also just think that, like I said, the way her emotional intelligence contrasts the kids who are still going the fuck through it as teens experiencing huge, fucked up emotions for the first time in their almost-adult lives; Mem's a lot smarter and sharper than folks give her credit for and it's always so interesting to see her snap into 'adult in the room' mode. The fact that this doesn't at all interfere with her friendship with Kana and Ruby is also really sweet - I actually do not remember ever seeing one of these age gap friendships in an anime that didn't come with some weird maternal overtones but the way B-Komachi's friendship kind of supersedes and makes their age gap a non-factor really reminds me of my own friendships like that - both when I was Ruby's age and had older folks looking out for me and now that I'm Mem's age and some of my besties from my real life DND group are babies LMFAO
Akane: The way OnK portrays Akane's acting technique is really fascinating to me! This is maybe a bit of a silly comparison to draw but I find that I weirdly relate to Akane and the way she portrays characters because I've been doing some form of online text roleplay or another since I was licherally 11 years old and the way she talks about like... sewing up internal inconsistencies and reverse engineering a character's thoughts, feelings and general worldview from their portrayed actions, making connections between aspects of their character that may be unstated by the text but make your portrayal cohere and feel richer and more vibrant. This is literally exactly the way I handle writing canon characters right down to the unhinged canon review, to the point that it is a running gag between me and my friends that Akane's serial killer ass Ai research session is Literally Just Me when I'm doing my Oshi no Ko canon review. It's about the weirdest and most unexpected way I have ever felt represented by a piece of media LOL Miyako: The absolute character development W this woman had!!! Admittedly I feel like the glowup is only so strong because Aka clearly had a very different Miyako in his brain when he started writing Oshi no Ko vs the one she actually became but I still absolutely love the ways Miyako grows over the series and how smart, competent and fiercely driven she is when given a reason to motivate herself. I don't have a huge to to say about Miyako just because she so effortlessly speaks for herself but God I Love Her. Ichigo: i just love it when a guy is a faildad to a fucked up teenage girl There we go! Admittedly this wasn't Everyone and I mostly just stuck to the main cast I had strong enough opinions about to voice but! If you're ever curious about what I think about someone in the extended cast, please do feel free to drop me some asks and prod me for my thoughts!

no good for me (light yagami x reader)
i’m back lol
> warnings: smut, degradation, spit kink, inappropriate use of the death note, VERY toxic relationship, song fic kinda, lyrics are in bold and italics, based off of diet mountain dew by lana del ray
> tag list: @ygm1slt @cradiot28
❛ you’re no good for me, baby you’re no good for me ❜
Nothing on this earth scared you more than the man you were about to see; the pretty boy brunette flaunting good grades and a picturesque family life whose facade of ambitious, respectful young man was a mask almost no one could see through. Some people felt dread at the thought of spiders or snakes, felt fear in their stomach imagining the paranormal, shadow ghosts or criminal stalkers invading their comfort zones. None of these perfectly rational fears scared you the way Light Yagami scared you. There was no fear to be had at the thought of something undesirable creeping its way into your privacy or comfort zone, because Light had manipulated his way into your comfort and trust long ago. He was scarier than a murderer ready to kill at an urge’s call, his blood lust hid in shadows behind his golden boy facade, his words were tools and his touches were negotiations. You couldn’t trust a single thing that came from his mouth, you often questioned your own sanity. Light Yagami had a terrifying grip on you, and it was exactly what he wanted.
Your eyes scan over the text Light had sent you for the millionth time, the words almost ingrained in your head at this point.
Come to my house. We need to talk.
You were sure he kept his words vague on purpose, yet another tactic to keep you at his disposal out of pure fear. You weren’t exactly sure if you loved Light anymore; what was your definition of love at this point? You loved him, yes, but was it out of obligation? Was it survival instinct?
It was true, in the beginning you had loved Light purely and truly. You believed his ambition was justice, to make the world a better and safer place for you. But as time went on, “Kira doesn’t kill innocents” began racking up more and more exceptions, and as the twisted justifications spilled from his mouth, so did the gaslighting. Over and over, his sweet words convinced you to keep coming back. His empty promises were a drug and you were addicted.
His text, you were sure, was a reference to this fizzling out of your love for him. He could sense it, and surely he must have found out you were planning on leaving. You weren’t planning on revealing that he’s Kira- that would cause more commotion you were not interested in being a part of- no, you simply wanted to move states, get away and forget about Light Yagami, forget about Kira and Ryuzaki and Ryuk and everything that has overtaken your life. However, if he did find out your plans to skip town, you may just have to reveal that he’s Kira for safety measures.
❛ you’re no good for me, but baby i want you ❜
Hestiently, you opened the door you had been staring at blankly for what felt like hours. Light had been staying in an upscale hotel during the investigation, so maybe the other tenants could hear you if you screamed for help; the overdramatic thought brought you comfort.
You walk in the room, closing the door behind you. You’re met with the sight of Light’s back as he sits in the rolling chair across the room. In the absence of any words, without even seeing his face, you know he’s mad. Every slight change of Light’s emotions could strangle a whole room by tension alone; his aura manipulated the feeling in the air, which served as a helpful alarm to know when he is upset. And man, is he upset.
You open your mouth to greet him, but he cuts you off, spinning around in his chair to face you, “Don’t talk.” You nod and close your mouth. Why do you even listen to what he says?
“I knew I couldn’t trust you. From the very beginning I knew you would run that pretty little mouth of yours. I know you’re planning on leaving. And then what? Telling the first news outlet you see that I’m Kira?”
“No Light,”
“I said don’t talk.” He stands up from his chair, “If you tell everyone, you’ll also have to tell on yourself. Imagine what everyone would think of you if they knew...You knew I was Kira and you still dated me, you defended me, you kept my secret, you even got on your knees for me. Are you gonna tell that to the media? That you let Kira fuck you?”
You purse your lips, restraining yourself from talking back. You knew it would only make things worse, but you couldn’t stand the way he talked down on you and expected you to take it.
“Come here.” He motioned to his desk and you followed, sitting on his lap per his instruction. He placed the death note open on the desk, handing you the pen. With one hand gripping yours and the other on your hip, he began to guide your hand, the pen spilling out the first letter of your name on the pages.
❛ do you think we’ll be in love forever? ❜
“N-No, Light, you can’t do this, please.” You begged, your heart rate quickening as you realize what he was doing. It can’t end like this, it just can’t.
“Shhh, just write. That’s it, baby. This is what bad girls get, you see?” His death grip tightened on your hand as he spelled out your name, the last letters leering closer and closer before you could register the implications of what he was doing. This was it, this was really it.
Light lets his free hand wander up to your jawline, pulling your face closer to yours and enveloping you in a kiss as he wrote the last letter of your name. You shake your head with a whine, however he disregards your concerns and runs his hand on your upper thigh.
“What’s the matter, Y/n? Don’t wanna spend your last moments with me?~” His nose kisses your neck, and the soft, sensual gestures almost make you forget your life was quite literally slipping away at every second that ticked by. 40 seconds. You had 40 seconds to do something.
You jump off of Light’s lap, reality rushing to your lungs as you felt your world closing in. Your pants become heavier, harsh air ripping through your throat as if they were the last breaths you would ever take because, well- they were.
Your head felt buzzing and dizzy as you fell to your knees, crawling towards Light who had spun around in his chair so his back was facing you; completely apathetic. After all you’ve been through together, after all you’ve done for him, nothing. Nothing at all.
You crawl closer, grasping towards the notebook Light held in his hands, your weakness limiting your reach as anxiety stole your clearness of mind. He only  chuckles at your meek attempts to save your own life. Your head was racing as your nervousness blacked out everything in the room except for the little black notebook your boyfriend had a death grip on; ‘I’m running out of time, I’m going to die, I need the death note, I need to cross my name out, I need it I need it I need it I-’
“Goodbye, Y/N. You were fun to play with for a while.” Light kisses your nose with an arrogant smirk, peeling your hands off from his lap and wrists before checking his watch, signaling your last few seconds.
You quit your pitiful attempts to grab the notebook and instead push yourself further and further away from Light until your back hit the wall, lacing your fingers tightly in your hair as you cried your last moments away.
“5, 4, 3 2...” Light spoke.
“No no no no no, please god,” You cried out, squeezing your eyes shut in preparation for the pangs you would soon feel in your chest.
“1...”
And
Nothing.
You breathe. You let the air flood your lungs; it shouldn’t be possible. You dare to open your eyes, revealing the same scene. You, pathetically on the floor with tears down your face, Light before you in his chair with his head thrown back in a maniacal laugh.
He tossed the death note down to you, like a dog being thrown a bone. You frantically grab it and flip to the newest page, your name scratched out with two thick lines.
You were alive- no, he let you live.
❛ hit me my darling tonight, i don’t know why but i like it
“Well?” Light asks expectingly, standing up from his chair and kicking it to the side of the room. You look up at him questioningly, eyebrows furrowed in confusion as tears still brimmed your eyes from the just-curved anxiety attack.
“No ‘thank you’? I spared your life even after you betrayed me- lied to me. You’re so ungrateful.”
“I, I-” You found it difficult to shape your words with your hitching breath. You inhale deeply, eyes closed, calming down, “I’m sorry. I’m sorry, Light.”
Why were you even apologizing?
“I’m so sorry, please, just take me back. I’m sorry.” The words spilled from your mouth so quickly simply because they felt right. You needed to apologize, you did wrong, you need to be good. You wanted him back more than anything so you can be good.
❛ scary, my god, you’re divine ❜
“That’s right,” Light smiled, his voice softening unnaturally, “Now, how about you come over here and show me just how sorry you are.”
You hesitate for a second before crawling over to him. You sit obediently with your legs beneath your thighs on the floor in front of him.
“Mm, that’s my babygirl.” He pets your head affectionately, coherencing a smile from you. Despite everything he’s done, he always knew how to reel you back in. You needed the approval. You needed his approval.
You look up at him with puppydog eyes, to which he cocks his head to the side. “You know what I want.”
Nodding, you slowly unzipper his khaki pants and pull out his cock. You run your hand up and down, pumping it slowly.
“Don’t be a fucking tease” Light scoffs, raking his fingers through your hair and forcing your mouth down onto him. That sweet, caring demeanor was gone in barley a second- of course it was. What were you expecting? It was a thinly veiled facade and you fell for it everytime without exception.
Light groans, pushing your head further onto him as you try not to gag. You feel the tip of him hit the back of your throat as he thrusts into your mouth faster. “God, Y/N, you take my cock so well. Hah, if only the media could see you now. Poor little Y/N wants to run away from big bad Kira, meanwhile here she is on her knees for him, sucking him off like the dirty slut she is.”
He lets out a deep sigh before pulling out of your mouth. “Be useful for once and get on the bed.” He commands, bringing you to your feet with his strong grip on your hair and pushing you in the direction of the bed. You obey, sitting on the edge of the bed waiting for his next instruction.
Light slinks over to you, standing over your figure as his delicate fingers dance up your inner thigh. He takes off your skirt and slowly rubs your clit through the fabric of your panties.
“Mmm, Light, more...” You buck your hips up to meet his touch, his movements were agonizingly slow and you needed more friction.
“More?” At once he removes his hand from between your legs and grabs your face, your jaw in between the tight hold of his thumb and forefingers. “You want more, huh? You don’t get to make demands of me. You really think i’m gonna give you what you want after that stunt you pulled? Hah, I’m not letting you off that easy.”
You let out a whine, bucking your hips again asking to be touched.
“Aww, poor baby...” Light cooed, “Open up.” You obeyed, opening your mouth before Light brought your face closer to his, spitting in your mouth. “Now swallow.”
You do, earning a smirk from Light. “Mm, good girl. Good girls get rewarded.”
He pulls your panties aside before dipping two slender fingers inside you; wasting no time, he pumps them in and out frantically.
“Oh god Light, fuck,”
“You’re so wet for me Y/N, you like this, don’t you? I knew you would, such a dirty whore. You like when I treat you like this? You like being treated for the slut you are? God, you probably got wet when I almost killed you. It makes me hard, having you under my thumb like this, under my control...”
“Fuck Light, it feels so good, I’m close...”
Quickly, he removes his fingers from you once again, earning a cry from you at the loss of heat. “Please Light, I need you so bad,” You beg.
“What did I say? You’re still not forgiven for that stunt you pulled. Don’t whine.” He wraps his hand around your throat, pushing you down onto your back.
He fully pulls his boxers down, aligning himself with your entrance.
“Beg for it.”
“Please, please light, god, I need it so badly. I want you.”
“Hmm, yeah? You’re so desperate for my cock? I’m not convinced.”
“Please, Light, I’ll never be bad again, I’ll never mess up again. I need your cock so badly, I need you to use me. Do anything you want.”
“Mm, that’s more like it,” Light remarks before pushing into you, earning a loud moan. HIs thrusts were slow, no doubt teasing you.
“Oh, Light, please, faster...”
“More demands? God, you’re such a needy slut. Fine.” His grip on your throat tightens, pushing you further into the bed as he snaps his hips into you without mercy. His pace is relentless, quickly finding your g-spot.
“Fuck, Light. It... it feels- fuck,”
“Hah, stupid slut, what’s wrong? Cat’s got your tongue? Or is it me fucking you so hard you can’t even think straight, can’t form sentences?”
His words only egg on your approaching orgasam, “Hmmph, it- it feels so good. I’m gonna...”
With that, Light pulls you up slightly by your neck before slamming you roughly back into the bed, thrusting into you with speed. “Cum, show me how sorry you are.”
You obey, releasing with a loud moan of his name. He finishes soon after, roughly letting go of your throat. “Clean yourself up. You look like a fucking mess.”
You slip your panties and skirt back on as Light sits apathetically at his desk, his focus buried in paperwork. You heart skinks to your stomach.
Once you finish dressing, Light allows you to leave, informing you of the Kira case work he had to finish and opening the door for you.
“And Y/N,” He catches your attention before you step into the hallway of the hotel, “Let this be a lesson. Don’t ever try to leave me again. You’re mine.” He grabs your jaw and kisses you tenderly- but you weren’t stupid. You knew the motivation behind it, and let you still kissed his soft lips back and let yourself melt into him.
“Goodbye,” He remarks after pulling away, “Behave yourself.”. The door slams in your face.
You can still feel his cum dripping from your heat daring to spill out of your panties. The hallway was empty, allowing reality to rush to you at once. Your senses only seem clear when you were alone- with Light, you didn’t see with your own eyes or hear with your own ears.
You let your back touch the door of Light’s hotel room, slowly sliding down until you were sitting on the carpeted floor. Your life was broken pieces and you cut yourself picking up the glass shards, relishing in the fact that your boyfriend liked the way the blood looked on your pricked fingers.
❛  hurt me and tell me you’re mine, i don’t know why but i like it. ❜

bakusquad- relationship headcanons
request:  @smexy-goose heLLO FRIEND. can i get hcs for the bakusquad boys and just how a relationship is like with them?? thank you so much!!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
a/n: not me using Yagami Yato’s petnames ☺️ and you can really tell Sero’s my least fav oops
BAKUGOU:
Tumblr media
Bakugou's s/o is the only person who won't be a victim to his harsh words
He won't even raise his voice, afraid that he'll scare them off
HOWEVER, he is a massive tease
"Are you blushing, teddybear?"
Lingering touches on your thighs and waist
Will pull you into a random, heated makeout session
Just as you're getting into it, he'll pull away
"What? Want more of me, baby?"
This. Man. Loves. PDA.
Even though he's self-conscious about how sweated he is, he'll still love holding your hand
He'll have you sitting on his lap, arms wrapped tightly around, planting soft kisses on your neck while he'll be yelling Kirishima's ears off at the same time
This dude loves cheesy dates. Picnics. Walks on the beach. You name it, he'll probably love it
"No, fuck off, shitty hair!" Bakugou barks. While his words are harsh and his tone is pointed, his touch is featherlight. His arms have snacked themselves around your waist and his hands are running up and down your arms. "You're fucking lying.".
Kirishima shakes his head. "Nu-uh, I'm telling you, the fourth one is the best Scream movie. Period," he says. The argument is stupid. Though all arguments the boys have are stupid and pointless.
"The first one is the best! After that, the movies just went to shit!". It honestly surprises you how your boyfriend can be so harsh to his friends but can shower you with affection the next.
You weave your fingers through Bakugou's spiky hair. He lets out a soft groan at the feeling of your nails dragging over his scalp. He leans into your touch more and you smile down at him.
"Actually," Denki says. "The second one is obviously the best. Sequels always rule!". Bakugou grabs a pillow from the couch and chucks it at Denki's head with such force that the electric boy falls onto the ground.
You swat Bakugou playfully against his chest and give him a warning glance. "Oh come on, Teddybear! You know I'm right," he says. You kiss your teeth and cock your head to the side.
"Well, I'm going to agree with Kiri," you say. Bakugou looks at you with big eyes. "The first one sucks, I'm sorry!". Bakugou shakes his head, moving his hands to your hips and pulling you off his lap.
"This is a betrayal," he says with a fake pout. You grab his face, one hand on each cheek, and give him. quick peck on his lips. He leans into your touch a bit, pout now melting away. "I still feel betrayed."
KIRISHIMA:
Tumblr media
Kirishima is the best boyfriend ever
He will be your personal hype man
"Pebble, you look fine as hell."
"I'm pretty sure it's illegal to look this good, babe."
But don't worry, he drinks his respect-people so his compliments will be kept to a respective level
PDA is his thing, not intentional though
He just mindlessly grabs his s/o's hand or wraps his arm around them. His body just naturally gravitates to them
He wants to see you every day. Date nights every Friday and Saturday, he invites you to watch his train, call you to bring him lunch, he'll use any excuse to see you.
Walking through a campus full of highly talented students with amazing quirks is, honestly, terrifying. You keep your head down, avoiding gazes of confused students. It surprises you how few of the student body recognize you considering how much your boyfriends shows you off. "Pebble!".
You look up to see your favourite redhead walking towards you, waving happily. You smile at him and quicken your pace. Once he gets closer to you, you hold out the bento box you were holding for him. He grabs it from your hands before place a kiss on your cheek.
"Thanks, babe! I can't believe I forgot my lunch again," Kirishima says. You know he forgot his on purpose but you don't care. Seeing him brightens your day and you know that he needs to have someone who's not as pessimistic as Bakugou around him.
"Of course, I wanted to see you anyways," you say. Kirishima places a hand on your waist, pulling you closer towards him.
"Wanna eat lunch with me?" he asks. You nod. He smiles widely, showing off his pointy teeth as he moves his arm from your waist to now be draped over your shoulder.
You two starts to walk towards one of the lunch tables the school placed outside while Kirishima babbles on about his day. His happy ranting lights up your heart and makes your stomach do summersaults. "Idiot!" you hear someone yell from a distance.
It doesn't surprise you that it's Bakugou who's yelling. You look up at Kirishima, god he's tall, only to find him already looking at you with heart-eyes. "Hey guys," you call from a distance. His friends look over at the two of you. You sit down at the edge of the table, squished between Kirishima and Denki.
"Y/n! I didn't see you all day. I was starting to get worried," Denki says. Honestly, it had surprised most of his Kirishima's friends that you hadn't been around until noon.
"I know, I was starting to miss my big old shark," you say before giving Kirishima a peck on his cheek while he is stuffing the contents of his bento box into his mouth at rapid speed.
"Love you too, Pebble," he says with a mouthful of food. You smile at him. God, you loved this man-child.
DENKI:
Tumblr media
God save the soul of his s/o
He is kind and thoughtful but so, so forgetful
His mind is just running on overtime so he'll forget about dates and miss anniversaries no matter how many reminders he sets on his phone
That being said he will make up for it in affectionEven if he's already together with his s/o he'll still flirt with them like crazy.
Like, "did it hurt when you fell from heaven" type of flirting after being together for more than a year. But it's cute.
He is like a raven, he'll bring you any shiny thing he sees. Something about seeing you happy when he gifts you something as small as a shiny coin makes his heart buzz.
He is a massive cuddler. Anywhere, anything, no matter what.
"Baby," Denki whines out. You simply shake your head. You want to cave in but you couldn't. "Please, just one."."No," you say. "You said it yourself, train for an hour then we can cuddle. Just three more minutes, baby.". Denki's cheeks heat up at the pet name. He nods. Three minutes aren't so bad right.
Your eyes are focused on him as you watch your boyfriend train. Clearly, he's showing off but you don't care. All you can do is stare at him with heart eyes, amazed at his quirk. Denki's so busy showing off that he doesn't even realize he has been training for an extra fifteen minutes.
It's only when he looks over at the clock on the wall while catching his breath that he realizes it. His muscles ache and he mentally slaps himself for pushing himself so far but it's all worth it when he sees the awestruck look on your face. "Like watching all this muscle in action, buzzy beautiful sunshine nugget?" he says a smirk.
All you can do is nod as you make grabby hands towards him. Denki practically runs over to you, falling right on top of you. Thank god the school placed as a couch in the training room. Denki's body pushed you further into the soft cushions while his arms snake around you.
"You did so well," you say as you start running your fingers through his hair. He groans in pleasure, basking at the affection. "I'm so proud of you.". All Denki can do is smile and nod as the over-excursion on his body finally starts to kick in. "So proud."
"Thank you, sunshine," Denki says. "Did you see my zappies? It's like...super zappy.". Zappies. That's a new one. God, he's tired. You move your hand from his hair to his chin, lifting it so that he looks at you.
His puppy dog eyes stare up at you. "Wanna cuddle in your dorm instead?" you ask. You have never seen him stand up so fast. Denki's pulling at your hand to get you up and off the couch.
"Let's go, baby," Denki says. "My bed is waiting for us.".
SERO:
Tumblr media
Just like Denki, he'll still flirt with his s/o but not as much. It's honestly cute.
"Damn, you look hotter than Bakugou's explosions,"
Earns him a smack on the head from Bakugou
He loves to wear matching outfits. It's so cliche but his heart will melt if his s/o buy matching sweaters for two of them.
He loves small domestic things. Cook together or clean the house while jamming to songs and he'll fall even further in love.
He loves it when his s/o please with his hair. Sometimes he'll grab their hand and just place it on his head, expecting them to know what to do.
Sharing ramen shouldn't be so romantic, but God did it make your heart do summersaults when Sero holds out his chopsticks for you. You lean forward, eating the ramen hanging from the wooden sticks. Yep, this shouldn't be romantic but it is. You smile at him with cheeks stuffed full with hot ramen.
You pick up your chopsticks as you grab a piece of your takoyaki. You hold it out for your boyfriend who happily eats the food. He smiles back at you while chewing on the food. "Is it good?" you ask.
"Hell yeah, wanna switch?" Sero asks. You nod, grabbing his bowl of ramen as he grabs your plate of takoyaki. You did this often, switching meals multiple times during dates.
"Anyways, I was thinking about going to the movies afterwards," you say as you grab another bite of your, or rather Sero's, ramen. Sero nods.
He grabs another ball of takoyaki and stuffs it into his mouth. "The scary one?" he asks. You nod. A smile spreads over his lips. God, how you love that smile. That smile that lights up your world.
"Just admit it, you only want to watch that one because you'll be able to cuddle up to me," he says. Your cheeks heat up at his words. Shit, he saw through your plans. He points an accusing finger to you. "I knew it. Don't worry baby, I don't mind.".
It's so secret that Sero is a cuddle bug. A huge one. Every time you were around him he had both his arms wrapped tightly around your waist, your body pulled impossibly close to his. Though you wouldn't have it any other way.

Because of @roselevesque wondering what kind of trouble a Lawlight child would get into... here are some ridiculous headcanons I’ve come up with, about Arya Stark from “A Song of Ice and Fire” being Light and L’s adopted daughter in some weird AU.
So, Light and L adopt Arya for an A+ reason to start with (I say sarcastically. But they really do come to love her and vice versa. Even though they’re sometimes shit at being parents, and Arya kind of shows it).
Like, she’s some orphan that they meet after some case. I imagine the “Death Note version of Cersei(?)” is some political leader somewhere, and killed Arya’s father who was a threat to her. But L and Light were actually beginning to suspect Cersei of foul play a long time ago. So they finally bring her in for questioning--and Arya with her, who’s Cersei’s “ward”--and Arya’s all like, “I don’t like Cersei.” She didn’t buy the Stockholm-Syndrome thing the woman was trying to do with her for a second.
Light and L then decide they like this child.
L may even get the idea to have Arya judge everyone’s character from now on, as she seems good at it. And Light and L grow attached to this kid, which is part of the reason why they decide to adopt her. But the real one? L: “I just think we’re in a rut, Light-kun. We don’t do anything new anymore. It’s very boring. Why don’t we try something new, like adopting a child?” Light: “We are not adopting a child just because we’re bored, Ryuzaki!” L gives him a look. Light: “...Okay. Maybe we’re adopting a child...”
I should probably mention that this is an AU where Light gave up the Death Note and being Kira (somewhat. Though part of him is biding his time, hoping he can get his perfect world back. And L knows this. Light remembers everything, because he has a microscopic piece of the Death Note in his watch).
Light and L decided to not tell Arya that Light was Kira--as a whole, the world doesn’t know Light Yagami was Kira--but Arya eventually finds out. More on that later.
I feel Arya loves both parents pretty equally. But she may slllllllllllllllllightly prefer Light. Just because there are times that L isn’t understanding at all. He doesn’t get, for instance, why someone calling Ayra “horserace” hurt her feelings, because it’s kind of true. L is very much with the “never forget who you are, the rest of the world will not. Wear it like armor and it can never be used to hurt you” mentality of Tyrion Lannister.
Arya may even have a hard time gravitating around L, because he has a hard time talking. But so does Arya, somewhat. So perhaps they actually bond over that? -shrugs-
But L is good at trying to cheer Arya up, at times, by silly things like sweets (even though he was once miffed at her for not liking lemon cake. But then was okay with her again for loving tea) and swivel chairs. He was also the one who wanted to buy her a pony... or a wolf (since Arya wanted one) And Light had to tell him “no”.
And both L and Light are A-okay with Arya wanting to learn sword play and horseback riding.
L also probably taught Arya capoeira.
And eventually, Arya does help him with some of L’s cases, since she is pretty sharp (they’re more L’s cases than Light’s, since Light is sort of on “probation”).
There were also times that Arya would come to L, worrying that Light was Kira--and he would just kind of look at her gravely--before Arya realized she maybe agreed with Kira.
L is the one who goes to most of the parent-teacher-conferences. Because one time, Arya got in trouble for punching a kid in the face. And Light said, “What? She absolutely should have punched that creep, and I’m glad she did. She should do it again.”
Light’s probably the one who tries the hardest to give Arya a normal, happy lifestyle and everything she needs.
He’s also the one who brushes her hair, when Arya refuses to do that. (Speaking of... there are definitely times when L admits privately to Light, “Light-kun, what were we thinking in adopting a girl? We know nothing about them.” And Light responds with, “For your information, I’m great with girls!”) He’s not. And he might even somewhat resent Arya being such a tomboy at first, but he gets over it. L, however, has always loved that Arya is that.
Light’s also probably the one who realizes that Arya isn’t misogynistic? Which is hilarious, because Light can certainly be that himself. With helpful gems like, “Arya, I don’t think you actually resent female things, like embroidering--or your female peers for being good at it--but rather yourself for being bad at it. So if you want... I can try and figure it out myself and teach you, I guess.”
Also... one day when Light is reading Arya a story and she says, “They killed the slaves? They should have killed the slavers,” Light has never been more proud of her than in that moment.
Both Light and L are of the mind that if anyone ever tries to touch Arya, she should kill them dead. Light and L might actually wish that Light had kept the Death Note, so they could put in it anyone’s name who would ever harm Arya.
Eventually, Arya is separated from Light and L. Basically, it’s found out that L was “aiding and embedding Kira”, so there’s this whole coup. Some people even discover L’s identity for a crazy second (before L gets that under control again. And convinces the general public that Kira is dead, and they’re all just cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs).
And in this chaos, the family is completely torn apart. Even Light and L are away from each other for a while (and this is what stars Arya’s “A Song of Ice and Fire” journey. More on that in a minute).
L finds Light... and there may actually be some tension there for a while, because Light thinks that L should have found Arya over him.
L: “I tried to find you both, Light!” Light: “But if you had to choose... you should have put more energy into finding her, because Arya’s a hopeless child, L! I’m not!”
So, Arya’s mayhap put into this “home” where children of Kira-worshippers are tortured (it’s the closest thing I can think of for Harenhal here). And she’s deeply traumatized and fucked up by it. She escapes, and commits her first kill to do so (as a nine-year-old, no less)... and gets a taste for it.
Like A Song of Ice and Fire!Arya, she begins keeping a list of all the people she’s going to kill, and that’s the only thing that keeps her going. And like in A Song of Ice and Fire canon, she changes her name multiple times, pretends to be a boy for safer travel, etc.
During all of this, Arya has to try and come to amends with Light being Kira (as she knows now). Death Note’s version of “The Hound”, I guess, kidnaps Arya eventually to try and ransom her back to her parents (after the friend she’d made, “Gendry”, leaves her). But that doesn’t happen when Arya, perhaps, murders the Hound to get away from his abuse?
Still not entirely knowing how she feels about the “Light having been Kira, and Light and L having lied to her about it” thing, Arya might purposefully stay away from them for a while and join the “House of Black and White” cult, that worships death... She then realizes that maybe she will drink that Kira Kool-aid.
L and Light finally find Arya after this her stay at the House of Black and White (they never gave up looking for her, and knew that she was alive because their girl is a survivor. So eventually, they probably just had to face the truth that she didn’t want to be found). And there are issues again, because Arya now knows that Light was Kira and tells him this and wishes he would be Kira again (and Light, has, like, never been happier). But L thinks he might leave both of them here... I haven’t quite figured how they work this out yet.
Maybe because while this Light is somewhat biding his time, and does still think the system is corrupt and shit, he also gave the Death Note up for a reason? Did he realize that just soullessly killing everyone wouldn’t solve everything? And is her fearful that Arya is romanticizing death so much? And the deaths of some “innocent people”, even? Like this one guard, who didn’t know what he was there for, that she killed to get out of that first torture house? There’s probably some moment where Light is honest and says what being Kira almost cost him, and then tells Arya to not be like him. And then she isn’t.
L is upset by how damaged Arya now is, of course. And that he let it happen. “I can’t believe our daughter is nine and already a murderer--and that she enjoys it--...but she only did what she had to do to survive. And I am glad she found a way to survive.”
Light: “You have to admit that you seem to be attracted to murderers, and vice versa. Maybe it’s only natural that this happened... And you have to realize that she got her affinity for changing names now from you, right?”
Some other things just off the top of my head: Light and L don’t think Gendry is good enough for Arya (until he makes her a sword? Then they sort of get it). Before then, they at least got her crush on Jaqen--if murder apparently interested her, as it would an honorable Wammy’s kid--but who was this Gendry fellow? And what kind of name was Gendry, anyway?
Sachiko loves Arya, because of course she would. Soichiro is somewhat afraid of what a child of Light and L will be like (he knows that his son was Kira), but is choosing to be hopeful and put all of his eggs into one basket, anyway. Sayu and Arya don’t get along that well (probably because of the tomboy and girly-girl thing. But they do try to be civil). And Matsuda is constantly thinking Arya’s going to be Kira 2.0, because he doesn’t want to be blindsided/betrayed again, but doesn’t say anything... But L, Light, and Arya all know Matsuda fears her, and probably laugh about it after their dinners together.
Though a part of L wants Arya to follow the “family business” and become a detective, he’s also open to any of her dreams. Arya decides she wants to travel some. That maybe she’ll be the first person to figure out what’s up with the Bermuda Triangle, and he thinks that that’s a beautiful thing. And he can’t say anything about her potentially wanting to risk her life to do it, because he risks his life for his line of work all the time, too. But eventually Arya does come home, and does probably become a detective like her parents.
The three probably have a lot of fun family outings, like to bakeries for one thing. And maybe Alaska?  L is from Britain, so he’s used to the cold. And I headcanon that this Arya likes the cold, even without being from Winterfell. So one time they visit there to look at wolves or something... and enjoy not having to pay taxes (even though L doesn’t even have to worry about it. Because he’s so rich) while they’re there... This was not Light’s favorite trip, but they still got a lot of cute pictures together, with wool coats and stuff. IDK.
Edit: So, in the books, there’s this scene where Arya is put in a dress and Gendry just bursts out laughing. Because it isn’t her. That scene probably still happens. And Light and L are probably there, too, and also laugh (maybe it’s a moment where Light and L finally get the Gendry thing), because they all know it isn’t her.
Edit 2: I forgot to mention that even though Arya is a quiet introvert, somewhat (like L). She’s also very charismatic (people always love her) and a good leader (like Light).
Edit 3: Arya totally gets to the point where she can beat Light and L in fights, of course... and most people.

TNG S01
I’m done with TNG S01! I’ve gotta watch some other stuff before I launch into S02, so have a quick round-up of my Very Important opinions on various characters/episodes:
Data - I love Data!! Holy shit do I love Data!! He is precious to me and perfect in every way and I want to hollow him out and wear his skin like a suit. That... possibly sounds creepier than I meant? Look, he’s my perfect wish-fulfilment character, okay. He’s earnest and awkward and he never quite Gets It, but he wants to Get It so badly, and he tries so hard, and whenever he talks people are constantly cutting him off partway through because they’ve decided he’s saying too much or saying it wrong, and he sort of... exemplifies what has been my perspective of the Autistic Experience. And despite all that, he has a career he enjoys and friends who care about him and I want to be him so much that it kind of hurts.
Also, Data has feelings. I will fight anyone to the death on this issue, I sincerely can’t see how anyone could look at Data and not come to the conclusion that he has feelings. Data has so many feelings! He might not have feelings the way humans have feelings, but he unmistakably has his own opinions and his own way of relating to the world. It’s heartbreaking that he doesn’t recognise the value of his own experiences in favour of desperately trying to live up to some arbitrary “correct” way of existing.
Deanna Troi - I hate Troi. I do not want to hate Troi, because empaths are way cooler than they usually get credit for, but she’s so fucking annoying. All she ever does is say things which were already completely fucking obvious. She’s a walking violation of show-don’t-tell and every time she opens her mouth I groan because I know whatever she’s about to say is going to ruin my enjoyment of a scene. About the nicest thing I can say about her is that she’s still a better character then Wesley, being merely irritating rather than universe-warpingly terrible.
Jean-Luc Picard - Picard’s such a dad, holy shit. I never noticed this when I watched TNG before, but now I’m picking up on it as, like, the major facet of his personality. I mean, he also drinks Earl Grey and LARPs as a detective and discusses philosophy with aliens, but mostly he’s just Space Dad now and forever. Somehow I also forgot the LARPing as a detective part of his character? Picard’s just a huge fucking nerd isn’t he.
Q - I have very mixed feelings about Q. On the one hand I always love arrogant, capricious, petulant trickster gods, especially when they have Q’s flair for the theatrical, but on the other hand I think when it comes to Q I maybe love him more in concept than in execution? I spend a lot of time thinking about trickster-god entities and how a nigh-omnipotent creature unbound by linear time and the laws of physics might relate to the universe, and Q’s a very mundane example of the character type. On the gripping hand, Q’s super fun and whenever he shows up I know I’m in for a good time. I strongly suspect that if I were a Q I would also spend an obnoxious amount of time trolling Picard. He’s just so delightfully trollable!
Tasha Yar - Yar falls into a lot of tropes which I absolutely hate, but despite that I kind of... love her anyway?? I just don’t get enough masculine female characters to not love them even when they have rape-y backstories and secret desires to be more feminine and Issues feat. their emotional vulnerabilities, I guess. She was kind of frustrating at first because she kept randomly attacking people, but in the later episodes she seemed to mellow out a lot and started acting the way I’d expect of a security chief, ie 101% willing to solve problems with violence but no longer functioning on a hairtrigger. I’m sad that she died, I would’ve loved to see what she could have grown into as the show developed.
Also she was bros with Worf! Somehow I completely forgot about that, but I love it. This is an extra layer of tragedy in her death, Yar&Worf is a delightful friendship and if it’d had space to develop I sincerely believe it could have toppled Data&Geordi as my most beloved Trek brotp. This is what fanfiction is for, I suppose.
Wesley Crusher - I know it’s kind of Trek cliché to loathe Wesley but boy do I ever loathe Wesley!! The funny thing is that I actually liked him for the first two or three episodes: he was a bright and enthusiastic kid who was transparently desperate for Picard to be his father figure (and Picard was transparently disinterested in being his father figure, which is hilarious), but then he was allowed on the bridge despite not being part of Starfleet or even an acting-cadet at the time, and then the action paused in the middle of an episode so Picard could get lectured on how Wesley is the bestest most wonderfulest, and then... you get the point.
I’m not here to shit on wish-fulfilment characters (I mean, that’d be hypocritical as fuck considering my feelings about Data), I’m here to shit on wish-fulfilment characters who are so devoted to wish-fulfilment that they stop functioning adequately as a character. The universe warps itself into a pretzel so that Wesley can be the bestest most wonderfulest and it really really pisses me off.
S01E01E02 Encounter at Farpoint - You know, for a nigh-omnipotent weird space being, Q is amazingly fucking dumb. Like, who agrees to judge people based on a test without realising that if you tell people you’re testing them they’ll go out of their way to be on their best behaviour? You’re not gonna be getting any kind of reliable data here, Q.
S01E07 Lonely Among Us - What the fuck was this episode, I mean seriously. Okay, so we open with two groups of diplomats who super super hate each other and the Enterprise has to transport them to a meeting, so you’d assume that the episode would revolve around dealing with the conflict between the two groups right? Except no, that’s like the d-plot, the a-plot is there’s a weird space thing and the b-plot is Data has a crush on Sherlock Holmes. The c-plot is Wesley does his homework. And then the episode ends with the news that one group of diplomats has cooked and eaten a member of the other group and Picard’s like “lmao I don’t give a shit, Riker you deal with this I’m gonna go take a nap.” What the fuck, basically.
In other news, spacefuture meat is all cruelty-free synthesised magic apparently. I wonder if vegetarians still exist? Other than vulcans, I guess. I don’t know enough about the philosophy behind not shoving delicious chunks of animal corpse into your face to work out the answer here.
S01E08 Justice - I talked about this episode already and honestly that’s all you really need to know. People try to talk to Picard about Wesley’s impending death and Picard immediately changes the topic to talking about the weird space thing, rinse and repeat.
Anyway I was recently reading about a guy who was transporting prisoners when some of the prisoners escaped. The punishment for letting prisoners escape was death, so he released the rest of the prisoners then ran off to be an outlaw because it wasn’t like they could kill him any more then they were already going to. Then he became Emperor! Anyway the moral of the story is that Light Yagami is a moron escalating punishments are important and if someone knows you’re gonna kill them for something they did then they have basically no reason not to go and do a bunch of other crimes also.
S01E10 Hide and Q - Hey, quick quiz: you encounter a nigh-omnipotent entity who has previously mocked your species for being savage and violent. Said entity dumps you on a planet with a bunch of weird monsters. Do you: a) attempt to communicate with these monsters in the hopes of reaching a peaceful solution, or b) savagely resort to violence by shooting them with your space guns? If you picked option b, then congratulations! You are the crew of the Enterprise. This technically wasn’t the point of the episode, but come on! Step up your mind-game game, Q.
Also Picard yells at Q for constantly changing his costume and it’s like, Picard, dude, you’re aware the thing you’re yelling at isn’t actually Q? Q isn’t a human with superpowers, he’s an incomprehensible entity who occasionally puppets around a meatsack so you can have something convenient to yell at. If there’s one thing I’ve learnt from Greek mythology and also Lovecraft, it’s that you super super do not want to see the incomprehensible entity’s true form.
S01E13 Datalore - I LOVE DATA AND I LOVE HIS HORRIBLE BROTHER!! but also, fuck Wesley. I hate Wesley. He’s immediately suspicious of Lore-as-Data purely on the basis of he sees “Data” doing Lore’s facial tic despite the fact that at the beginning of the episode he walked in on Data attempting to mimic sneezing, and despite the fact that there are several other characters with much better reasons to find Lore-as-Data suspicious.
Actually, you know what my dream rewrite for this episode would be? Someone becoming suspicious of Lore-as-Data, not because they think he’s Lore, but because they think he’s Data. The crew had previously been discussing whether or not they could trust Data now that he’d found links outside of Starfleet, so having that issue play out onscreen would’ve been fantastic. (Especially if it influenced their behaviour towards Data and Lore tried to take advantage of that as a “your friends are dicks, betray them and join me” kind of thing. I’m Here(tm) 24/7 for manipulation and corruption, my dude.)
S01E17 When the Bough Breaks - You know, this entire episode could’ve been solved with cloning. I mean actually it couldn’t, but the problem they thought they were having could’ve been solved with cloning. Ask the Enterprise for some unfucked genetic material and you can make your own kids! As many kids as you want!! More than six kids because seriously I don’t know what you were expecting to achieve with that, that’s not enough people to keep your planet alive.
S01E19 Coming of Age - This episode is an excellent example of What’s Wrong With Wesley. Wesley does an exam, and he loses some points in order to help another person with the exam, and at the end he’s told the other person passed but he didn’t, and the other person’s like “oh but that only happened because Wesley lost points by helping me!!”, because Wesley is so bestest most wonderfulest that the only reason he fails is because he sacrificed himself to help someone else to succeed. There’s a vague attempt at suggesting “oh, but there were other reasons Wesley failed!!” but like, fuck you, you don’t get to show me nothing but Wesley succeeding and then attempt to salvage this mess by telling me there were other factors at play, especially not when there’s so much attention devoted to Wesley helping the other person.
S01E22 Symbiosis - Everyone spends this episode focusing on the wrong thing. See, the Brekkians are selling medicine to the Ornarans, except actually it’s not medicine it’s addictive drugs, and this is bad because... drugs are bad? Don’t do drugs kids!! Why are you all focusing on the part where there are drugs and not the part where the Brekkians are lying shitbags taking relentless advantage of the Ornarans so that they can live like parasite kings in a capitalist hellscape castle?
“Golly gosh I sure can’t understand why anyone would voluntarily become dependent on a drug!!” says FUCKING WESLEY, THE WORST CHARACTER, completely missing the part where the drug actually is medicine and the Ornarans are entirely unaware that they no longer have the plague the drug is medicine for and thus believe that they have literally no other choice than to take the drug if they want to live. There is nothing “voluntary” about this at all, Wesley you absolute fuckwad!! Somebody shove this kid into a locker already.
S01E23 Skin of Evil - There are no pockets in Starfleet uniforms so everyone spends this episode wandering around with stuff awkwardly glued to their sides and it’s terrible and hilarious. I’m pretty sure this is true of other episodes but this is the one where I found it really really noticeable and couldn’t stop laughing.
...this episode was just obnoxiously funny in general actually, Goo Man is trying so hard to be super evil and scary and grimdark but nobody really gives a fuck about it, he’s more just like majorly inconvenient and kind of irritating than he is actually threatening at any point. “You don’t understand! I don’t serve evil, I am evil!!” the Goo Man wails. Picard categorically does not give any kind of a shit in response.
tl;dr: Data is precious and perfect and every time he’s onscreen I start weeping. YOU’RE DOING GREAT, DATA! I’M SO PROUD OF YOU!!

Lawlight Week Exchange
Title: Nexus Name of creator: @mgcmind Created for: @dotti55 Prompt: Light opens up to L the fact he thinks he’s gay. Characters: L Lawliet/Light Yagami Rating, warnings and no. of words: rated G, no warnings, 1758 words
The realization comes upon L slowly, which is unusual for him, as most realizations slam into his mind hard and fast, like freight trains. When he looks back on it, it is difficult to pinpoint the exact moment when he changed from the L who did not know to the L who did. Between late-night conversations (read: arguments) and early morning breakfasts, one truth about Yagami Light felt like it just…manifested itself, coming out from under the shadows and becoming brighter and brighter, until the thought of it ever being kept secret seemed ludicrous and unbelievable. (It is unusual for him to place this much importance on one piece of information. It isn’t as though it is useful for the investigation. It isn’t as though it is a clue. But perhaps it isn’t strictly the case that interests L right now.)
***
“Yagami-kun, do you believe in true love?” L asks one morning, early in their forced cohabitation, over scones and coffee.
Between one sip of coffee and the next, Light smiles, laughs a bit, like he thinks the question is a joke.
“Does anyone?” he answers, which isn’t really an answer at all.
“Of course,” says L. “Many people do, I expect.”
“Are you one of them?” asks Light. He keeps up a hint of the previous smile. One elbow rests casually on the tabletop, his chin sitting atop one lightly curled fist.
He is trying to deflect, and L says so.
Light stiffens a bit. The smile is nowhere to be seen now. (It means nothing, though. Light makes no expression, probably draws no breath, without precise, calculated intent. So if he looks caught off guard, it doesn’t mean he really is caught off guard.)
“So what if I am? This has nothing to do with the case. Are you going to lock me up again if I refuse to answer personal questions?”
L crunches into a scone. It is crispy on the outside. It is soft, warm, and luscious inwardly.
“That would be counter-productive,” he says. “Besides…what if I am merely trying to get to know you better? Is that so wrong? We are friends, aren’t we?”
“Strange topic for friends,” Light remarks drily, looking away.
L shrugs. He goes back to his scone.
Silence reigns for about thirty seconds or so. Then:
“Oh for God’s sake, Ryuzaki,” Light blurts out. “We both know you’re asking because you’re trying to convince me, yet again, to become intimate with Misa to get information about the second Kira. If I don’t believe in true love, you’ll say that there is no reason not to use my influence over Misa’s emotions to get information, since it could save many lives and won’t betray any hypothetical relationship with my True Love in the future. And if I do believe in true love, you’ll say that any True Love of mine would understand the position I’m in, and approve of whatever means I used to save innocent – or not so innocent – people. Because anyone compatible with me would have to have the mentality that the ends justify the means.”
L nods. No point in denying it, after all.
Light sets down his coffee cup with a none-too-gentle sound.
“If you’re smart enough for all of that, you should be smart enough to know I’m not refusing to seduce Misa because of the existence or nonexistence of any True Love,” Light tells him. “I’m refusing because it’s morally wrong. I have principles, Ryuzaki, and I’m asking you, yet again, to respect them.”
L makes a conciliatory gesture toward Light, over the tabletop.
“Very well, Yagami-kun. My apologies,” he says.
More silence. They finish breakfast, and manage to walk down the stairs to the investigation desks and computers without tripping each other up on the long handcuff chain.
When they sit down next to each other, each at their own respective monitors, Light says, “If you really want to know: no, I don’t believe in true love. And I don’t not believe in it either. I need evidence to make decisions, and I don’t have enough, at this point, to make a determination either way.”
L turns to look at him. He is met with shiny brown hair and a striking profile.
Then Light adds, with forced nonchalance, “And yes, we are friends.”
He turns to meet L’s gaze. His lips turn up - just the barest bit – into a small smile.
L finds himself wanting to smile back, inexplicably. He doesn’t, because Rue Ryuzaki certainly would not. But he does allow himself a nod and sincere-sounding, “thank you, Yagami-kun.”
***
Misa doesn’t miss an opportunity to flirt with Light. If she is around, she is dancing around him, trying to catch his eye, or else whispering in his ear, or smiling and batting her long eyelashes in his directions.
Light, for his part, never misses an opportunity to rebuff her advances. If she tries to sit in his lap, he stands and moves away. If she hangs off of his arm, he takes it back, pretending to type up research notes.
It seems incomprehensible to Misa that anyone could spend any length of time with Light Yagami and not want to engage with him romantically. When L attached his wrist to Light’s with a length of metal chain, her mind immediately jumped to L’s sexual preferences and how he clearly wanted Light near for his own gratification. When L corrected her, Misa reacted to him as a jealous lover would to a rival.
Misa is endearing, in her way, and L takes her accusations in stride. He takes her unwanted desserts, and bonks her on the head with paper megaphones, and occasionally joins her in teasing Light.
But even as he does these things, he remains acutely aware of his prime suspect. And he notes that throughout Misa’s endless flirtations, and her endless insinuations about L’s alleged homosexuality, Light remains conspicuously silent.
***
“I’m not lying to you, Ryuzaki!” Light screams. His voice - habitually an octave higher than most males his age, in order that he may appear kind, agreeable, and generally soft - goes an octave down. L realizes that this is how Light would sound normally, if he would allow himself to be even halfway authentic.
L prefers this voice. L will always prefer Light in his most truthful form. He will always be annoyed when Light obfuscates, or conceals, or downright lies.
“You are. You have been for months. You are Kira. There’s no question. Simply admit it.”
“I won’t!” yells Light, going so far as to stomp his foot. The moon shines itself like a spotlight on him.
“You hide yourself from everyone, all the time,” L says. “It is exhausting, isn’t it? Playing a part every second of every day? Wouldn’t it be nice to be honest with one person, at least? Wouldn’t it be nice to be honest with me?”
“I am honest with you! You’re too blind to see what’s right in front of you!”
“I have been called many things, Yagami-kun, but blind is not one of them,” says L mildly.
“That’s because I’m the only one you’ve ever met who’s smart enough to see it! You, with your pseudonyms and your computers and the goddamn persona you wear like a second skin! You want to lecture me about authenticity?” Light says, viciously. “Despite all your poking and prodding and invasions of privacy and these fucking things” - he brandishes the wrist with the handcuff on it - “despite all that, I’ve never lied to you!”
“Yagami-kun,” L scoffs. “You haven’t even been able to tell me the real reason you won’t investigate Misa.”
“I won’t manipulate her because I have principles! How many times to do I have tell you?!”
“Principles…” muses L. “Well, there may be some truth to that. But there is another reason. A deeper reason, something you won’t admit to me. I don’t know if you’ve even admitted it to yourself.”
And just like that, they’re no longer talking about the case.
Light’s eyes narrow, and his lips set themselves into an unbending line. The air surrounding them seems to chill all at once, and solidify like glass. Like ice. L wonders, for the first time in his life, if he has perhaps pushed someone too far.
“How dare you. How dare you!” Light hisses. “To think that I…that I honestly thought…”
He laughs, and it is a twisted, broken, furious sound.
“You can’t leave well enough alone, can you? It’s not enough for you to solve crimes? You have to push people and push and push and push until they break open. You want whatever anyone is hiding, whether it’s relevant to a crime or not! You can’t let anyone hold anything private, can you? You are so goddamned cold.”
Light delivers this diatribe with the harshest intonation L has ever heard another human being utter. Then he turns around, presenting L with his back, and stands, if possible, even taller and prouder than before.
“Congratulations, L. You’ve solved another mystery. Even if I were completely and utterly morally bankrupt, I wouldn’t be able to manipulate Misa the way you want me to. I couldn’t manipulate any woman that way. Not without a hell of a lot of mental gymnastics, anyway, and maybe the threat of torture as an incentive.”
L says nothing. He never thought that Light would say so much, and he truly doesn’t know where to go from here.
“Nothing to say, Mr. Detective? I bet it’s still not enough for you. Not clear enough, or open enough, or honest enough, huh? I haven’t cut open my stomach and spilled my guts on the floor in front of you, so you aren’t satisfied. Fine. I suppose I’d hate for you to think me a coward, as well as a liar. So how’s this?”
Light turns around again, meeting L’s eyes with none of his typical kind-heartedness. None of his typical humanity.
“I’m gay.”
Still, L cannot speak. He can only stare. The moonlight pours down around Light’s shiny hair, creating the faintest of halos.
“Still nothing to say, huh? Why so quiet?” Light jeers. He can be truly vengeful when he wants to be. “Maybe instead of uncovering everyone else’s secrets, you ought to pay some attention to your own, detective.”
And with that, Light pulls the two of them to the computers, opens a browser window, and throws himself into research.
L tries to do the same, and finds himself a failure.

Apparently, I was tagged to talk about Theon a bit, thanks @bluetheon This is interesting, the fact that liking this particular character always seems to demand an explanation. Here’s the moment someone comes at me with a - sometimes accurate - list of his crimes and every morally ambigious thought that crossed his mind. And to that, I answer : okay, he misbehaves and he is a war criminal by our standards and modern laws. Yes. Absolutely.
Still, this is strange that I have to explain it, because I can name a couple of super popular characters-slash-war criminals. Hey, Roy Mustang, people. He’s more popular than both Scar, whose people were assasinated in a genocide that turned him into serial killer, and Edward Elric, the clever, brilliant hero with a heart of gold. I love Roy and his potential as a character, but let’s stop pretending hating Theon has anything to do with his crimes or even with him being a “grey character” - a screwed up moral compass never got in the way of Magneto or Light Yagami.
This is about Theon being both the victim and the criminal. Those guys I mentioned, sometimes they are victims too (Magneto, hello) but they react in a way that doesn’t make people uncomfortable. They transform into awesome, badass villains thanks to their tragic backstories. It fits with our expectations. And anyway, that kind of super-villain doesn’t exist in real life so we can idealize them, it’s okay. (And gods, who doesn’t like Magneto?)
But Theon, he is that abuse victim that doesn’t manage to inspire pity. He doesn’t want to. He goes against the narrative, in every way. He’s had that terrible childhood, an upbringing that fucked him up. He’s been despised in his own home for everything he is - a shy, somewhat feminine (at least not conforming to the ironborn ideal of masculinity) boy. And that boy fought back in all the wrong ways. He never resorted to cynism and became that ensemble dark horse we are familiar with. No, Theon is hopeful to a fault, he sees a bright future for him and Robb and he will rule the Islands someday soon. His mind is not wired right, it seems, because when fate throws punch after punch, he smiles back and cracks a joke.
And I’m not going to lie : he is a strange character. One of the greatest too, because he doesn’t play by the rules we are used to, that’s all. He entertains illusions and he deceits himself. He wants to impress his father but takes Winterfell - a prize that costs so much to his people - on a whim, for glory and for the little boy hostage who dreamt of this home for so long. Pyke will never welcome him back (and does he want to ? this place is nothing to him now, it never was, it was just a dream) so he takes Winterfell, he grasps it to never let go.
Theon misbehaves, plays with the rules, he is both the scared boy and the ambitious young man and the charming friend to Robb Stark. Archetypes tend to reduce even the great character to one of these : the super-villain renounced to be the little boy. He abandoned him, threw that part of himself away. But not Theon. Who is letting Ramsay kill the two children ? Who is deceiving himself to the point he doesn’t acknowledge Ramsay’s ulterior motives ? Who is saying, sorry, screaming : “It’s better to be cruel than weak” ? Is it that well-dressed, smirking pirate, or is it the little boy, terrified of losing everything he has, the only accomplishment he ever got, his almost home - Winterfell ?
Who jumps to a certain death, to save an innocent girl ?
To answer the question properly, I loved Theon from the start - I loved him because I couldn’t understand him like all the other characters. There was something terribly flawed within him, and I loved that enigma of a character. This doesn’t bother me to see so many readers/viewers hating him, since I recognize he is not a simple character to read. Here’s the thing : most people don’t hate him for rational reasons. Those who actively hate him do so because they can’t reconcile all the parts of his character. But that boy who smiled at all the wrong things ? He has blood on his hands and he’s betrayed a friend and he took so many wrong turns. That wasn’t written, he could have avoided that fate, had he reconciled the scared boy with the ambitious young man. But he couldn’t do that, not in the middle of a war, not in his position as a hostage - a status that meant living in perpetual fear.
In the end, the boy wanted to be safe, a place to call home, a smile for gratitude. and the young man yearned for a crown, a prize, a family name to wear proudly. These desires may be at odds with one another and that’s where Theon’s suffering turns him desperate. He’s so lost but he never stops, not for one minute, he won’t rest until he has anything left to chase. The children who escaped. Winterfell. A crown. His pride. A name. He’s this broken, damaged, unyielding enigma, a closed book no one can read, no even his worst nightmare, Ramsay, who thinks he belongs to him now, no even himself but that doesn’t stop him from trying to understand.
Let me tell you, if he were as weak as they say, he’d have let himself die. If he were as useless as they say, the writer would have let him die.
He is a fascinating character to observe, all these struggles and that pain and these messy desires... that’s the thing everyone should admit. Love, hatred, that doesn’t matter. He is so fascinating. A ghost now, refusing to dance for anyone else. A broken man, surviving against all odds, still breathing and struggling and joking at yet another captor. He is the product of the world GRRM created, one of the finest example of what war makes of us - not wild beasts, not monsters, but ghosts too eager to forgot our names when it suits us.
His story ends the moment he reconcilled these scattered parts of himself. The moment he remembers the meaning of his true name. Contrary to popular belief, this doesn’t happen in Dance. The gods are not done with him, and I am so, so glad about that.
Let’s hear ... @janiedean, @francisperfectionbonnefoy, @natsumi82

My thoughts on the death note live action by the Netflix
*Breathes in* BOI DO I HAVE I LOT TO SAY
I came into this with the lowest expectations possible, as a fan of the original source material I was happy at first when I heard Netflix was going to bring life to an already great story, and I was hyped for it. But then I found out about what they changed Light’s name to. Seriously LIGHT TURNER. Did you just finish watching fairly odd parents before deciding on his name? I get it you had to westernise the name to appeal to a wider audience but like at least choose a name that doesn’t make it sound like a job. like “ELLO I AM THE LIGHT TURNER,I TURN OFF THE LIGHT, I TURN ON THE LIGHT”. But then I was like okay maybe it’s just the name it’s alright I can look pass that. But then I found out about the casting.... And everything just kept on going down hill. Especially when the trailer released and my fear was realised. They weren’t going to stick to the original source material at all, but I still hoped in my heart they would at the very least keep the core parts of the story. But sadly they didn’t.
I’m gonna start with the most basic thing I want to address.
The Characters.
None of the characters were done right. Maybe ryuk was but I dunno he wasn’t as assertive in the original source material plus he wasn’t in the film as much as I hoped.
Let’s start with the people who I think should have been in it that weren’t included.
Light’s Mother and younger sister. Light didn’t need to have the whole back story where his mum was killed by a criminal who wasn’t prosecuted. In all honesty I feel like them giving such a cliché and predictable backstory took away so much from his original Character. Light was a Sociopath even before he got the death note, and him having the picture perfect family might have been one of the reasons that side of him developed. everything about light was supposed to be perfect, his grades and his looks were all incredibly above average, his dad was a chief officer, his mum was the perfect house wife and his little sister was your normal adorkable little sister who looked up a lot to his brother, Light himself was the perfect son, he was an honour student probably even the smartest person in japan at that time. (or atleast until L came into the picture) he was bored of his perfect life, and already felt like he was above everyone, anyway i have more to say about Light later. I’m just saying, having them there would have added more complexity to light’s character overall. We really didn’t need the whole angsty relationship between light and his dad. It just made the film feel like it was trying too hard to be edgy.
The rest of the Kira investigation team, Matsuda and the others added a lot of things for character development not only to Light but most definitely to L as well. This was the first time he started working with other people besides watari, where they actually met and talked in person, before then he would work alone only communicating through watari and or a computer screen. towards the end of his arc you could tell he was starting to enjoy working with them and seeing them as friends. Not to mention the whole scene where they finally meet L and L was just like “bang, if I was Kira you’d be dead.” being one of my favourite L moments ever,along with the whole “I couldn’t live in a world without Light” “yes that would be very dark”conversation
The female FBI detective whose name I completely forgot. (I haven’t rewatched death note in a while cut me some slack)  (her names Naomi Misora I looked it up. Lol) the scene where Light met her before she got in contact with L was an amazing part of the original. Plus the way Light manipulated her into giving him her real name was a perfect way to portray how much of fucking genius Light was, I swear they completely missed out with not adding that to the movie.
Rem. Rem added a lot more expedition into the death note itself, and how it came to be, and how it works. Not to mention Rem was one of my Favourite characters in the Series. She was a death god like ryuk. Who wasn’t completely crazy like Ryuk but more calm and observant, She was a genuine Friend to Misa (Mia in the Netflix version WHICH BTW I HAVE A LOT TO SAY ABOUT TOO BUT I’LL SAVE THAT FOR LATER). I won’t go into much detail on her but anyone who has scene the original source material knows why Rem was really important.
Shall we go on to the actual characters in the film now? Let’s take a deep breath.
Let’s start with Lights dad. Why the frickity frack is he like your average angsty cop dad in every fricken film. Light’s dad in the original was a clean,prim and proper dad, who had a strong sense of Justice and clear love for his family. He was never laid back, He despised what Kira was doing, he was so passionate about it that he even gave up his job as chief of the NPA. Plus he even went as far as taking the shinigami eyes, even though it cut his entire life span in half causing him to die a few days after. The dad in the movie however was just like your cliché cop, who was struggling to make connections with his son.
L and Watari,Watari isn’t Watari’s real name. Do you honestly think a super genius like L would let his extremely close Colleague Use his real name when he goes by a fucking letter. NO. HE. WOULDN’T. Plus L would never do a press conference himself he would have Watari show up in a trench coat and a mask hold out a Laptop and talk through that, with a voice changer on himself as well. That’s how he communicated to the public, He would never show up himself. However I would have to give credit where credit is due, The person who played L did a massive good job in portraying the weird quirky side of his. And that’s pretty much it. Halfway towards the end they took away a core part of L’s original character, The way L would never let his emotions take over, Logic would always come first. He would never go crazy and chase after Light he would calmly think of a way to corner him. That’s why he made Light Join the Kira investigation team in the first place. Plus they never mentioned why L sat that way or why he likes sugar so much, or how he doesn’t like phones. Also the way Light was his first friend even though he knew for a fact Light was Kira he just didn’t know how to prove it. If anything L’s character felt closer to Near and Mello to me.
Misa/ Mia, look the whole point of Misa’s character was that she was completely and utterly devoted to Light and his cause, as he, Kira, killed the man who murdered her family. Her whole thing was she loved Light with all her heart and was completely and utterly loyal to him, to the point that she would risk her life if it meant it would make Light happy, which the movie completely took away by making her betray him. NOT TO MENTION MISA IS SUPPOSED TO BE AN IDIOT. She’s not your cliché edgy popular chick who likes bad boys. I’m repeating myself here but Light is a sociopath, The only reason why he tolerated Misa and pretended to date her was because she was of use to him since she had shinigami eyes and she possessed another death note. In all honesty the romance in the netflix version ruined the whole thing for me.Not to mention the one thing Light made sure about is to not let anyone know about his identity the only times he did reveal it was towards the end during the time he made Mikami(i think his name is) write in the death note in his stead while he was working on the case against Near, but in the movie he just reveals it to this girl because he wants to bang her. Not to mention you lost a lot of Misa’s character and back story by not including Rem. Or the story about the shinigami who fell in love with her.
And now to the one I have the most to say about,
The #tooedgyforyou boi himself, Light Yaga- I mean Turner. Light turner, FUCK I HATE THAT NAME,
My biggest problem with Light Turner here is just the fact that he’s supposed to be Light Yagami. He is completely different. Light Yagami is a self righteous sociopath with incredible passion and determination (*megalovania blasts in the background*) he’s calculative and manipulative and he will do anything if it meant he would get what he wants. Only a complete and utter Sociopath would still try and make his Dying father use his lasts bits of strength to kill someone just to get one person of his back. He doesn’t give a shit about love, and he wouldn’t be dumb enough to leave opportunities for Mia/Misa to take the death note from him. He planned every move before hand, looked at every possible outcome before moving on to the next. He wasn’t someone who would give up his ideals of a perfect world for a fucking cheerleader who had a nice body. Heck I’m even smarter than the Light that is being portrayed in the movie. Probably even the L. In the anime Light picked up the death note read it and was like “eh that’s bullshit but I’m curious so I’ll take it home for now.” then while watching the news he saw that there was a hostage thing going on and he decided to just try it out. It’s not like there’s anything to lose, and it worked the person died of heart attack 40 seconds after. Even though it threw him off he was still sceptical, and tried it out again while he was at the convenience store where he saw a guy on a bike harassing a woman, He was talking really loudly and telling the woman his name tellin the woman to remember it, so he decided to test out the notebook again and wrote out the name but this time with a method of death, and when it worked again he realized that the book was the real deal, so what’s the first thing Light does? Write down every criminal’s name he could find, people  who he thinks deserved to die. And by the time Ryuk showed up he has written over 400 names in the note. HE DIDN’T NEED TO BE COERCED. This shows that Light was a strong willed person. He had his own ideas of how things should work and how he wanted to use the note. He also expected Ryuk to show up. He didn’t freak out like Light turner did. he knew that if something this powerful existed then there must be a just as powerful being that it belonged to and that they would soon come in looking for it. He started with good intentions at first but as time went by he slowly spiralled into crazy. He started believing he was the new God of the world he was creating where there is no crime because everyone was terrified to meet Kira’s wrath. He went in too deep and that pride and arrogance was his downfall. (oh btw Kira wasn’t a name Light gave himself, Kira was the name given to him by his followers and he took a liking to it. he wasn’t like “kira, I’ll name myself kira. That names pretty dope it’s my name in Celtic” fuck off)  Light turner was nothing compared to him. Light turner just seemed like your average emo boy who’s pretty good at academics that’s pretty much it. Like the only time he showed intelligence was when he was doing homework for other students which by the way is something the original light would never do. Light Yagami is a super genius, He even got a perfect score on his uni entrance exam, Light turner is just kinda good at math. Light yagami would not cry if Misa died. He would not spare his father if it meant leading to his downfall. He would never waver if it meant his goal was achieved. He would not be that stupid. Not to mention Ryuk isn’t that assertive and pushy he just kinda liked watching how things unfolded, he didn’t force people to write in the death note, or be so cryptic. He explained everything clearly to Light when Light would ask. They just made Light into the cliché underdog who hates school and everyone in it. The Ryuk the Netflix version created was nearer to joker than Ryuk anyway.
That’s enough of the characters let’s go into the scenes I think should have been in the movie that weren’t and plot points they missed.
The whole “I’ll take a potato chip and eat it” scene. you guys know what I’m talking about. In this scene Light was under surveillance by L and he new it so he planned everything he did, he bought this tiny portable tv, which he placed inside a potato chip bag which he ate as he did his homework. He did his homework with his right hand and wrote down names as they popped up on tv with his left. THIS SCENE MAN. It showed how cunning and intuitive both L and Light were. Though Light won that round as he was able to clear him of suspicion by not only giving him an alibi where he couldn’t possibly know the criminals whose names had only been released in the news that night but making people believe he was your above average nice guy.
The bus scene, Light new he was being followed by L’s men and he knew he had to get rid of him. So what does he do? Go on a date.this scene is one of my favourite scenes in all of anime, so I won’t go into much detail about it but let me tell you it’s fucking epic and the way Light was able to figure out how to extract the name of the FBI agent was amazing, this scene also portrayed how bloody brilliant Light is which is why I feel like by just having that one scene in the movie it would have added a lot more to Light character over all. If they had just kept at least one scene from the anime that portrayed the core parts of the characters personality I feel like the fans of the original source material wouldn’t be this disappointed.
L and Light’s time at the university. Just following the whole Light being a university student instead of a high school one would have been nice tbh. I don’t really understand why it had to be set in a high school was the writers that desperate into turning this into a movie that would appeal to a younger demographic that they turned it into a twisted cliché high school romance that was obviously trying so hard to be edgy with it’s soundtrack, gore and slow motion dancing, it basically felt like the writers just read Perks of being a wallflower and was like “you know what would make this better? murder.”
Don’t get me wrong I get it, you obviously couldn’t fit a whole entire series with over 30 episodes into a single movie so your gonna have to make some adjustments.I can also tell that the people behind it worked really hard into making it a decent movie. but to change something that was already good so much that you make it fail in comparison to the original is just disappointing at the very least.
The biggest problem I think with hollywood “adaptations” is that they think us fans don’t want to see the same shit over and over again. Which in all honesty is completely false, I can assure you every death note fan has seen the anime series at least twice. there’s a lot of hidden meanings and Easter eggs you wouldn’t have noticed the first time around. The whole appeal of an adaptation is that it’s for the fans who are massive supporters and just want to see new life brought into the characters we already know and love and for the people who has never heard of it and just want to try something new and maybe it’ll introduce them to new forms of entertainment.
To the creators of the netflix version of death note, if this really was the story you wanted to tell, here’s how I think you should’ve gone. Neither of the characters you created should have been the characters in the original. if Light turner wasn’t supposed to be Light Yagami you would have received a lot less backlash from the community, if L wasn’t L and if Mia wasn’t Misa, the comparison would never havebeen made and it would make people a lot less mad about the casting. The problem I think here is that you guys didn’t look at it from the Fan’s perspective and just wanted to see what you can do with an already famous franchise that has a pretty good premise, if I were you, the way I would have wrote it would be this way:
Instead of this being the original Kira case I would have set it a few years after the original series ended, Light turner could have been from a family of Kira supporters or His mother was one and that’s why his name is light, he was named after him, since I’m sure after the original investigation was solved Light’s name would have been released to the public, obviously they would keep the death note and the shinigami thing a secret, but I’m sure they would have released Kira’s true identity, Light turner receives the note and Ryuk, Now knowing what the human race is capable of  becomes more assertive and manipulates Light turner into trying to replicate what Light Yagami did, Mia could be another Kira supporter and that could have been the thing that brought them together, L would be Near, I can assure you that if the person you cast as L was Near instead you would have received a lot less backlash, Why? you may ask. Character design. L’s appearance is a huge part of the reason why some of the community love him, he’s incredibly unconventional from his pale skin to the huge dark circles under his eyes to his messy emo hair. People in the death note community love L and hold him very close to their heart so to see him portrayed by someone who doesn’t resemble him at all would obviously upset them. as much as I think the actor who portrayed him did an amazing job with capturing his small little quirks I doubt he would look good with a huge black fringe. Near on the other hand was someone who was only introduced towards the end so we wouldn’t have that much of an affinity with him like what we have with L, You can play with his character a lot more and he would be already aware of the death note from the start adding more interesting twists to the story, also I can also see Near adopting L’s persona, and using his name as it’s totally something he would do.
The biggest problem I see with this whole think in my opinion is that it was supposed to be an adaptation. It wasn’t, if you had just told people from the start that you were never intending to make it resemble the anime then I feel like the backlash it would have gotten was a lot less. The fact the only parallels is how the book fell from the sky and the main protaginists’ names being L and Light and the existence of Watari and Ryuk kinda just makes me think you just heard about the show second hand and you dif not actually try watching it yourself.
The problem is this isn’t an adaptation. this was just another version of the story.
