This one goes out to all the slow burn enjoyers, the dense Y/Ns, and the soft robo jesters that suffer in silence!
Inspired by @bamsara's “Solar Lunacy” fic.

so i heard this song for the first time in a while and the opening lyrics immediately made me think of moon, so i was daydreaming some scenes and then i decided to thumbnail some ideas:

and it all went downhill from there as everything became a metaphor and a parallel to each other, which i will now go into detail on!

Frame 1. "turn down the lights" We start with a back view on Moon. The lights are out, the Moon is out, but we do not see his face. The music and the greyscale atmosphere are enough to establish the weight of the moment and the weight on Moon’s mind.

Frame 2. "turn down the bed" We cut to a shot of Moon's body, kneeling on the ground of the daycare, like a padded cell. Moon’s hands are twitching with the effects of the glitch, with purple sparks coming from his hands. We still do not see his face.

Frame 3. "turn down these voices inside my head" Cut to an extreme close up on the dark half of Moon’s face. Now we see his face, but only a portion of it. His left eye is wide open, red and glitching out. The voices in his head can refer to the glitch but also his repressed feelings. Or maybe it could be Sun's voice in their shared headspace.

Frame 4. "lay down with me" Y/N's hand enters the frame from the upper right corner, lowering down to meet Moon where he kneels on the ground. Only a corner of Moon's face appears on the bottom left corner of the frame, his starry nightcap beginning to cover his glitched left eye.

Frame 5. "tell me no lies" An full shot of Moon on the floor and Y/N standing in front of him with their hand stretched towards him. A light spills out from behind Y/N, creating a boundary between them.
Now we see more of Moon. It is only when Y/N enters the frame—enters his world—that Moon’s body is shown in its entirely. When Y/N is here, he is no longer fragmented. He is whole.

Frame 6. "just hold me close" pspspspsps Playfully, Moon extends his own hand, beckoning Y/N to come closer, to join him. His right hand crossed over his body as he uses the playful gesture to hide his true feelings—to put distance between him and Y/N. His hat continues to cover his glitching left eye. He doesn’t want to worry Y/N.

Frame 7. "don't patronize" In response, Y/N’s hand pats Moon on the head, returning his playfulness. Moon looks surprised by the action. Moon, notably, does not lower his hand—perhaps he has forgotten it or perhaps his invitation is still open.

Frames 8-9. "don't patronize me" Moon rotates his faceplate so Y/N��s hand is touching the side of his faceplate, a more intimate gesture than a head pat. However, his hat is in the way. At this angle, his starry nightcap fully covers his glitchy eye and the dark side of his face, hiding his defect and acting as a veil between him and Y/N. A self-imposed boundary. So close, yet thinly separated. It's better this way. It's safer this way.
The lyrics are broken up by Y/N's arm, both to illustrate how the song is sung ("patronize" is drawn out and "me" is briefly added in before the chorus starts) but also to show how Y/N interrupts Moon's resolve, highlighting the irony between the visuals and the lyrics. Demanding not to be patronized, yet Moon happily accepts this play at intimacy. Don't patronize me, I am weak for it.
This is also the only instance where the red light of Moon's eyes glow and tint the surfaces around it. Visually, it makes it look like Moon is blushing (heavily inspired by @restinsodaroni's art). But also, in this moment of honesty, Moon's intrinsic light spills out, colouring the greyscale world. In this brief moment of honesty, Moon touches the world with his own colours, his own light.
(and this is also where i forgot to clean up the shading on Y/N's arm, but it's okay it doesn't need to be perfect it simply needs to be. And Moon will still love Y/N even if they are a continuity error.)

Frame 10. "'cause I can't make you love me if you don't" A parallel to a frame 4, Y/N retrieves their hand away and immediately Moon is reduced to the corner of his faceplate in the frame. Only now his glitched eye is fully covered by his hat.
The lyrics here (and in the next frame) in particular grow lighter to emphasize Moon's diminishing resolve and agency.
From here on out, the lyrics here are broken up, carrying on this theme of fragmentation. Y/N is pulling away, Moon is breaking up, the words are breaking up. Everything is coming apart.

Frame 11. "you can't make your heart feel something it won't" Y/N turns to leave. The lyrics, broken up as before, highlight the irony of the situation. Y/N, a human, can’t feel something they simply don’t feel. Whereas, Moon, the machine, feels something his code never intended him to feel.

Frame 12. "here in the dark in these final hours" Another full shot that parallels frame 5, as Y/N steps towards the light and Moon leans forward into the space Y/N once occupied. Y/N is leaving—that which makes him whole is leaving. And he is only capable of making it to the boundary where the light cuts into the darkness. The "final hours" suggest it might be the end of Y/N’s shift, or perhaps this scene takes place right before the glitch takes over—the final hours that Y/N has with the true Moon. Either way, time is running out—and only Moon knows it.
There is a contrasting display of body language here. Moon is on the floor leaning towards Y/N with his hand still left out. Whereas Y/N is turned away, walking away, and has already slipped their hand away and into their pocket. Y/N is closed off while Moon is limply open. Y/N is actively moving while Moon is on the floor, waiting, hoping, for that which he lacks the agency to reach for himself.

Frame 13. "I will lay down my heart" A close up on Moon’s hand, rising up again, perhaps to beckon Y/N back once more. This is a slight parallel to Y/N's hand reaching out to Moon. While Y/N can freely reach out and touch Moon, Moon cannot. He can't enter the light and more importantly he can't risk potentially harming his relationship with Y/N—be it through the glitch or by his feelings. He can only lay down his heart—put aside his feelings or hope that someone will pick up his pieces and make him whole.

Frame 14. "and I'll feel the power" Still on a close up on Moon’s hand, now clenched in slightly. This initially was going to have the glitch effects. However, I felt it more meaningful for it to be left without. Leave it up for interpretation why Moon pauses his hand. What is the power that he alone feels and stays his hand?

Frame 15. "but you won't, no, you won't" A parallel to frame 1, a view of on Moon's back with his hand stretched out towards the light, and Y/N walking into the light spilling through the open daycare door.
The placement of the lyrics suggest two different “you won’t”—Y/N who won’t realize Moon’s feelings, and Moon who won’t dare speak them into reality.
Another note on the parallel to frame 1, this time we also see Y/N's back, but it is notably different from our view of Moon's back. With Moon, we literally see inside him through the hole for his loop. However, Y/N is shrouded in shadow, just a solid, obscure silhouette against the bright light of a world Moon—and Sun for that matter—are closed off from. We don’t see into Y/N, just as the Daycare Attendant doesn't have any vantage point of Y/N's life beyond their time at the PizzaPlex. (The unfortunate reality of a being a character made for the purpose of being a vessel for the reader.)

Frame 16. "'cause I can't make you love me" We finally cut to face Moon head-on, frozen in place with his hand stretched out, unable to cross the boundary into the light. His eyes have gone dark. Where we began by seeing bits and parts of Moon, and never seeing his full face—now we, the viewer, see the full Moon, open and vulnerable—unbeknownst to Y/N.

Frame 17. "if you don't" But in the dark, behind closed doors, there is no one to perceive him—no one to receive him. The light dwindles as the daycare doors are closed. Moon stays frozen where he kneels. It is no longer the glitch that plagues him, but a far deeper dread.
But a lone streak of light peaks through the gap in the daycare doors. Perhaps that is just enough. A silver lining. A frail hope. A single, ethereal thread out of darkness and into light.

SECRET RECIPE
A/N: its out last sunday fic of fanficmas! still working on the second christmas fic, i got into a bit of a delay but im hoping to finish it on time!

SUMMARY: Christmas time brings some worries and surprises and of course lots of love in the life of Nan and Harry.

 Harry’s in the middle of recording a verse for a new song he’s been working on for the past days when the music cuts off and he looks at the technician through the window with a confused expression.
“What happened?” he asks, pulling the headphones off. Jim, the technician presses a button and speaks into the mic that carries sound into the booth.
“Man, your phone is blowing up.”
“It’s fine, I’ll just call them back,” he shrugs.
“It’s Y/N. She’s called like six times in the past two minutes.”
His stomach churns.
He’s fast to exit the booth, fetching his phone from one of the seats. You know he’s at the studio and wouldn’t call if it wasn’t an emergency.
“Let’s take five,” he says, unlocking his phone and opening his call log, seeing all the missed calls from you. Jim knows it’s his cue to leave, he walks out without a word as Harry dials your number, a knot forming in the pit of his stomach.
“Harry!” you answer out of breath.
“What’s going on?”
“I’m on my way to the hospital.”
“What? Are you okay?”
“Harry, it’s not me, it’s Nan,” you let out a shaky breath.
“I’m on my way,” he says, packing up his things immediately.
Jim doesn’t fuss when Harry ends the session early. He jumps into his car and you tell him what happened as he heads to the hospital as well. Nan apparently went on a date and out of all the activities she could have done with her date, she went skating.
“What was she thinking?!” he snaps, smacking his hand against the steering wheel when he has to stop at a red light.
“I just arrived, how far are you?”
“Ten minutes away.”
“Alright, meet you here.”
Harry soon arrives at the hospital and parks his car down in a frenzy, rushing inside. The nurse behind the desk recognizes him right away, but before she could start fangirling, you come up to him running.
“Hey! There you are,” you exhale, hugging him tight.
“How is she?”
“She fractured her hip, can you believe it?”
“For real, I love her more than anything, but sometimes she can act like a child,” he shakes his head in disapproval.
Walking down the hallways you stop at room 102 and Harry follows you inside. Nan is right there, lying in bed, chatting with the nurse, already telling her about recipes and gardening.
“I promise you Sweetheart, that’s the key to the perfect banana bread!” she explains and her face lights up when she sees the two of you flood into the room. “Harry! So good to see you!”
“Nan, what did you do?” he questions right away, ignoring the way the nurse blushes upon seeing him before walking out of the room.
“Oh, nothing crazy, don’t worry about me!”
“Skating at your age is actually crazy, Nan,” you shake your head, taking a seat on the edge of the bed, careful not to hurt her.”
“Aye, watch your mouth!” she wiggles a finger at you, but you just roll your eyes at her.
“Let’s start at the very beginning. You were on a date?!” Harry gawks at her, standing over you. Most of his worry is gone, seeing Nan be her usual sweet but sassy self.
“Oh, we’re not talking about that,” Nan waves around, but there’s no way Harry will just drop it like that.
“No, no, no, you’re not getting away with it! You didn’t tell us! Who was he anyway?”
“It’s none of your business! I’m a big girl!” she jokes.
“Yes, but going on a date is something you share with your family, don’t you think?” you ask, giving her hand a squeeze. “You demanded to know everything about my first date with Harry, it’s not fair you keep things like this from us!”
“Frank’s daughter works at the flower shop on Ernest Road. I’ve run into him several times before and we’ve had some pleasant conversations. He asked me out and I said yes, that’s it,” she shrugs, fixing her hair just to avoid looking at you or Harry.
“And you didn’t have a better idea than skating? Nan, you have to be careful!”
“I used to be a great skater in high school!” she protests like a little kid, Harry needs to bite a smile back.
“Oh my God,” you pinch the bride of your nose. “I’m gonna get you something to drink. Harry, stay with her so she doesn’t go skydiving or something,” you mumble as you walk out of the room.
“I’m kind of offended, Nan,” Harry places a hand over his chest, stepping closer to her bed. “I thought I was your guy.”
“Oh, Harry!” she sighs. “You know you’re my number one,” she chuckles, a slight blush tinting her cheeks that just makes Harry even more confident about himself.
“Apparently Frank took my place!” he scoffs dramatically. “I need to meet him, Nan. I’m not gonna let him just steal you away like that, I have to make sure you’re in good hands!”
“Please, don’t act like I’m getting engaged!” she chuckles. “It was just a date!”
“Yeah, but then more dates come and next thing we know you’re walking down the aisle!”
Nan lets out a belly laugh that soon turns into a wince and Harry instantly regrets joking around.
“I’m alright, I’m alright,” she assures him when he moves to check her. “Harry, I’m just looking for some company, I won’t remarry.”
“I know,” his gaze softens, sitting down to the edge of her bed. “And I want you to have fun, but you need to be more careful. You’re sturdy, but not indestructible, okay?”
“I know,” she sighs. “Just wanted to have some fun like when I was younger.”
“We’ll find another way that doesn’t include fractured hips,” he smirks at her.

Harry has been MIA for hours. It’s not unusual when he’s at the studio, but you know for a fact he has the day off, so why isn’t he answering your texts?
You keep wondering as your work day drags by and when you finally head home, you try to call him again. It rings and rings and you’re starting to get anxious that something might have happened to him. When you think it will go unanswered the ringing finally breaks and a familiar voice answers, but it doesn’t belong to your fiancé.
“Y/N? Hi!” Nan’s upbeat voice welcomes you and relief washes over you.
“Nan? Would you mind telling where my man is?” you chuckle as you get into the car. The phone connects and the answer comes through the speakers.
“Oh, he is just up on my roof!” she says as if it wasn’t a big deal at all.
“What?” you chuckle in disbelief. “Why?”
“He’s helping me decorate! Showed up here this morning, he’s been doing all the work all day!”
“Oh God, of course he did,” you chuckle.
It’s been a week since Nan’s skating accident and she’s been miserable because she can’t get around like she usually does. She has someone from the family checking up on her every day and a nurse comes by in the morning and in the night too, but you all know how much she hates to be in need of help. You keep telling her it’s just temporary, she’s been having a great recovery, but she needs to be more patient with herself.
Harry must have wanted to make her feel better, she’s been moping about not being able to decorate like she usually does, so your fiancé probably took matters into his own hands.
Without thinking twice, you head over to Nan’s place to check up on both of them. When you arrive, you’re glad to see all the décor Nan whips out every year. Lights are running along the edge of the roof, huge candy canes are peeking out of the ground in the garden up front and garlands are snaking up the columns of the front porch. And the last touch? Santa’s sleigh is on the roof, Nan’s favorite décor every kid adores around the neighborhood.
You knock on the front door with a goofy grin, looking at the snowman ornament hanging on it. The door flies open and you’re met with your lover.
“Hey there,” he smirks and pulling you inside he greets you with a big kiss on your cold lips.
“Hi! Nan said you’ve turned into her little elf for the day,” you chuckle, enjoying the warmth inside as Harry takes your coat.
“I did the best I could,” he smirks shyly.
“Y/N! Hi!” Nan cheers from her armchair, her cane resting against the side of it. Before she could try to push herself up to greet you, which for sure she plans to, you rush over and plant a smooching kiss to her cheek, stopping her from moving.
“Stay, Nan. How are you feeling?”
“I’ve had a great day with Harry. Did you see the décor outside?” she beams.
“I did, looks great,” you smile at her.
Harry makes some tea and the three of you sit by the fireplace. Nan is obviously happy to have company and you’re glad to be spending time with her. She really scared you with her little accident earlier, she got lucky, it could have turned out to be way worse.
“Alright, you two head home and be together,” she sighs, checking the time and seeing how late it has gotten.
“We’re happy to be here, Nan,” Harry smiles, taking her empty mug and heading to the kitchen to clean up.
“Y/N, give me that box over there,” she gestures at a little wooden box on the shelves next to the fireplace. You obey and hand her the box, watching her dig into the stack of papers inside. “Here, this is for you,” she hands one over and you take it, scanning over it curiously.
“What’s thi— Oh. This is… This is your secret recipe. Your gingersnap cookies…”
“I want you to have it.”
“But why? You haven’t given it to any of my cousins yet,” you look at her with wide eyes.
This recipe comes from Nan’s grandma, so it’s been in the family for a long time. Every woman eventually gets it, your mom has it too, but she can only pass it on to the generation coming after you, that’s the rule. Nan hasn’t passed it on to anyone and you and your cousins have been wondering who’ll get it first.
She chose you. Though you would have sworn your cousin Riley would be the first, she is the first who got pregnant and now has two kids.
“Because what you and Harry have reminds me the most of what I had with Steven. Riley’s husband would have never spent the day here, climbing on my roof and hanging ornaments. And Lydia… God, I’m afraid she will never settle!” she chuckles, bringing up your female cousins. “You two… are something truly special and soon you’ll finally get married. I want you to know how to make it by the time you’ll have babies.”
You can’t help the tear that rolls down your cheek as you lean closer and give her a hug.
“Thank you, Nan,” you whisper, kissing her cheek right when Harry walks back in. He looks startled to see you crying.
“Woah, did I miss something?” he cautiously asks, but you just shake your head chuckling.
“Everything is perfect, don’t worry,” Nan smiles up at him. You give Harry a look that tells him to just drop it and so he nods.
The nurse arrives to help Nan get ready for bed when you leave and you hug her just a few moments longer than you usually do before walking out.
“Are you sure everything is alright?” Harry asks when you’re home, standing side by side in the bathroom, doing your usual night time routine.
“Nan gave me her gingersnap cookie recipe,” you say with a smile as you brush your hair, looking at him from the mirror. For a moment, he rakes his mind to figure out what it means and when he does, his eyes go wide.
“Oh! You’re the first one then!” he beams at you proudly.
“Yeah,” you chuckle. “She said that what we have reminds her of what she had with Pa.”
“That’s very sweet,” he smiles, brushing a hand across your back, pressing a kiss to the side of your head.
“She also brought up us having babies, I think she is getting impatient,” you add with a little laugh as you turn around and lean against the sink to face him.
“Wow, she can never have enough!” he grins. “I got comments on proposing to you for months and now that we have the date reserved she found something else to poke me about!”
“She’s not rushing us, you know. Just wants to see us become parents.”
“Soon,” he smiles and stepping closer his hands find your waist. “First, let’s make us official. Then we can move on to baby making.”
“So… that’s the plan?” you tilt your head to the side.
“Is it not?”
“I don’t know,” you chew your bottom lip.
“Y/N? Want to share something with me?” He takes your chin between his thumb and index finger, making you look him in the eyes.
“I was just thinking… We’re getting married in February. It’s not that far away, maybe we could… start trying sooner? It might not happen right away and if it does, it wouldn’t even show at the wedding…”
For some reason you feel so nervous about proposing your idea. You’ve talked about trying for a baby next year, you’re very much on the same page so even if he says no for now, you’d definitely start in a few months. You just figured that maybe you could start sooner.
Harry gently cradles your face in his hands, a tiny smile tugging on the edges of his mouth.
“So… we should just drop the pills, hm?”
“Y-Yeah. I mean, only if you’re okay with it. We don’t have to if you—“
He presses his lips to your lips, melting away your nervousness instantly as he kisses you softly but passionately.
“I’m more than okay, Y/N. I know you’re it for me, we don’t have to wait for a certain date to start trying.”
You can’t stop your growing smile as you look up at him.
“Okay. No more pills then,” you bite into your bottom lip.
“And a lot of baby making,” he smirks cockily, sweeping off your feet and carrying you into the bedroom. You’re a giggling mess as he throws you to the mattress, but they soon die down when he gets on top of you, occupying your lips with something much more exciting.

there’s a part in take me back to Eden that says “i’m in a waking hell and the gods grow tired.” do you think it’s referencing the origin of vessel and sleep? as in, vessel was in “a waking hell” (reality/earth) before he shifted away from his previous life to believe in sleep (a ‘tired’ god)?
Hello there, Anon! This is a goooooooood one, let me roll my sleeves up for an answer-
This is a delicious perspective I have not considered before, however! I do believe he says "I'm a waking hell" there and I will explain later why, but for that I would have to leave the interpretation of the whole song here. And it will kinda mix the being in waking hell and being a waking hell, because I overdid it again. Apologies in advance.
For me, this song refers to the beginning of it all, to an event which was perhaps the final straw for the trilogy (or even the general idea of Sleep Token) to exist. There are parts of this song that feel like a reminiscence of a catalyst for the whole sleepy business and parts that describe the present, after Vessel got a taste of what the whole sleepy business is about. I'll try to explain that now!
I dream in phosphorescence Bleed through spaces See you drifting past the fog But no one told you where to go
We dive through crystal waters, perfect oceans But no one told me not to breathe And now the weightlessness recedes
Okay, for me, the first verse is him dreaming of the times before, of his Eden (a person, a "better" time in his life, whichever suits you). He bleeds through spaces (in the Dreamworld?) to see what he has lost and craves to come back to. But the dream turns into the moment it all went wrong, where they got lost/drowned. He comes back from the dream-turned-nightmare to the present with the chorus:
My, my, those eyes like fire I'm a winged insect, you're a funeral pyre Come now, bite through these wires I'm a waking hell and the gods grow tired Reset my patient violence along both lines of a pathway higher Grow back your sharpest teeth, you know my desire
(Oh god let me be feral about the chorus for a second here, ok. GOD I LOVE THIS SO MUCH, HOW CAN YOU WRITE POETRY LIKE THIS AND HAVE THE AUDACITY TO DELIVER THOSE LINES SO DELICIOUSLY. WHO GAVE HIM THE RIGHT. IT'S BEEN ALMOST 8 MONTHS AND I AM STILL EXPERIENCING EMOTIONS UNNOWN TO HUMANKIND WHEN I HEAR THIS- okay I am back to being normal now.)
He wakes up and remembers how cruel being under Sleep's influence is. That no matter what he dreams of (hello, The Apparition), he is always waking up to the reality, which is still terrible, despite Sleep's promises. The eyes (probably 6 of them huh) are Sleep's. Sleep continues to lure Vessel in, even when Vessel knows, after being with/serving/worshipping Sleep for quite some time now, that Sleep is going to be his downfall. But he stays, cause he has no better options, mayhaps?
And we're finally getting to the waking hell part which you've asked about!
He is in waking hell still, even if he thought he's going to escape from it. He knows he cannot/will not separate from Sleep now, but it's not like he's going to make Sleep's life easier with completely giving up. He:
isn't happy about the sleepy business (anymore);
has an attitude and WILL bite back;
will make his suffering everyone else's problem now.
Which brings me to the gods - in many interpretations I've seen, Sleep is an outcast in some sort of pantheon. He needed Vessel as much as Vessel needed him and together they are more powerful. Sleep helped Vessel in his lowest moment and Vessel, while gathering more and more worshippers, gave (and is still giving) Sleep enough power to make other gods' lives miserable as a revenge or something. Or just, you know, grow in power in general, it doesn't have to be a revenge. The other gods will be pissed off either way, because one thing all gods hate is other gods/entities growing in power.
The symbiosis with Sleep has worked for a while, but due to various reasons (Sleep getting too greedy, as gods do, not all Vessel's problems being magically fixed by Sleep's presence, miscommunication, different expectations, broken promises etc. etc.) Vessel started to rebel. He's in waking hell still (despite Sleep's promises that lured him in in the first place), so he will become one for the ones he can lash out on now (Sleep and the other gods). He embraced the become ungovernable meme. Isn't there a saying "hell is other people"? He took that literally. While he's awake, he is insufferable to all who he thinks is at fault for his current state now.
I will travel far beyond the path of reason Take me back to Eden
And he's happily going to continue to be insufferable to get what he wants (what Sleep has promised him when they've made their pact or whatever it is they did tbh), even if it's not reasonable to do so. He's beyond caring at this point.
And we're back to flashbacks, baby!
Well yeah, I spit blood when I wake up Sink porcelain stained, choking up brain matter and makeup Just two days since the mainframe went down and I'm still messed up Room feels like a meat freezer, I dangle in it like cold cuts Missed calls, answered phones from people I just don't trust Mirror talk, fake love But I'll take a pound of your flesh Before you take a piece of my paystub White roses, black doves, Godmother, rise up I need you to see me for what I have become
I really think this depicts the catalyst for going under Sleep's influence and the very moment they became entangled. “Damn, again?” She asked through a whine and he chuckled and nodded in confirmation. This was the third day she’d just been sucked into the editing, but when you find a flow it’s best not to stop.
“What track are you working on?”
“Daylight. I’m just about done actually, was about to give it a final listen if you want to hear it? Think I’ve managed the perfect balance.” She said with a proud grin and he nodded at her invitation and she handed him the headphones and she restarted the track on the software for him.
He immediately smiled at the slight reverb she had applied to the keyboards at the start, giving a dreamy and wave-like illusion that made his head bop along almost immediately. Everything was sounding exquisite as he sang long lowly. The levels of the vocals were completely balanced and god, the harmonies in the second verse. They gave almost a surround sound experience from how she had arranged them. He reached for the volume dial and turned it up, which made Y/N grin and his eyes widened as the electric guitar bounced from ear to ear right before the bridge.
“Oh shit!” He exclaimed as he banged his head along to the heavy instrumental. Even with all of the loud sounds the vocals came through clearly. It was perfect. Harry sang along quietly as the song continued and started winding down and finally ended. He pulled off the headphones with a huge smile, “You killed it, Y/N! That’s so fucking perfect, Tom’s going to lose his shit when he hears this tomorrow.” Harry exclaimed excitedly.
“Yeah, you think so?” She asked a bit timidly and he nodded.
“Hell yeah. I love it! You did really good!” He complimented her work again, “Understood the assignment 100%.” He assured her and she giggled. Tom had said that the main thing he wanted was a good sound balance with this and she had done that.
“I aim to please.” She shrugged with a small smile before letting out a long breath and standing from her seat. Harry’s eyes followed along the length of her body as she let her neck roll back and her arms reach up high in what looked to be a most delicious and well deserved stretch. Her shirt rode up a bit, exposing her skin which was soon covered in goosebumps. Fuck, he wanted her so bad.
Y/N was absolutely beautiful. She had been traveling around with his little production team to various places as they worked on this album. Tom thought that she had a very keen ear and a promising future with some mentoring and well, he wasn’t wrong about that. The quality of her work was always top notch. Harry wouldn’t normally interact with production and editing as much as he was now, but with this being a team of 4, sometimes 5 if Mitch was able to join, everyone did a little bit of everything and she had been teaching him a lot about the technicalities of music. He’s yet to hear her play or sing something, but if Tom & Tyler had advocated for bringing her along he was positive that her talent was incredible.
She was still a bit closed off, she was rather mysterious. Y/N hadn’t fully come out of her shell even after they’d all spent months together. Harry wasn’t going to lie to himself and say he didn’t have a crush on her or even the hots for her at times, but he needed to be professional. They were such a small team that he couldn’t afford to fuck this up. Not making a move was becoming a struggle for him though. He then talked himself down for a while when he found out that she wasn’t single, but the more he got to know her slowly he started to not give a fuck about that.
“Do you want to have a smoke?” He asked out of the blue and she glanced down at him.
“Sure.” She said and soon she was heading out to the terrace of the studio they were holed up for the next few weeks.
The night was a bit cool and she looked up at the night sky as she waited for Harry to return with his little weed bag. He plopped down right next to her, providing her some much needed warmth as their arms touched and he then pulled out a pre-rolled joint and sparked it up before handing it off to her where she took the first hit of it. He tried not to stare at her mouth, but it couldn’t be helped. She then passed the joint over to him where he too inhaled slowly and carefully, holding it in for a moment before letting out. “Impossible.” She hummed and he felt his heart flutter as her eyes traveled down his face and unmistakably settled at his mouth. “Does it feel weird to have a mustache?” She changed the topic completely and he smiled at her when their eyes met again.
“Not weird…But it does take some getting used to. Like when I lick my lips and feel hair there it like throws me off sometimes.” He explained and she hummed.

Album: The State vs DeMerea Pasquale
Artist: Squalee 2x
Release Date: 13 February 2024
This publication has waited patiently for a complete project from the enigmatic Squalee 2x. By my count 3 years of teases and leaks and snippets have served to wet the appetite of the local listener. We hear him rap we hear him sing. What will the album be like? In a word. Surprising. A single conversation with DeMerea Pasquale will reveal that he is deeper than his often goofy internet persona. Struggles with substance abuse, family issues and relationship problems are worn on the sleeve of this artist like a badge of honor. “The State” is heavily reflective of these facts. The beats mostly guitar driven mostly lack driving bass with notable exceptions. on “The Second Crash Always Hurts Worse” a simple acoustic guitar moves the beat and a feature from local artist C Klip brings us into the heavily autotuned vocals of Squalee who’s crooning is made not only bearable but rhythmic and pleasant by the effects used in production.

Sticking to the guitar-driven but this time complimenting with snare Squalee gives us “Love Sick in Springfield” a break up song that runs almost systematically through the stages of emotion associated with relationship cessation. The hook is an earworm that finds Squalee alternating keys to a remarkably listenable song.
“Letter to my Granny” has Squalee sing-rapping with slightly less vocal effect applied. A heartfelt ballad /tell all “Letter” is an outstanding example of doublet flow that reminds me of Scarface…if he used autotune.
Squalee kicks what sounds remarkbly like a YFN Lucci song on “Perky Dreaming” This song comes very close to being a traditional rap song entirely excluding Squalee’s wailing drone instead opting for a rapped hook and verses.
Springfield heavyweight Junior Pasare lends his vocals to “Menace to Society” a snare-and-bass track. He releases a rapid-fire Rod Wave style verse that gives the song a back bone while Squalee provides the lifeblood.
“Perky Eyes” is on the surface a Lil Peep inspired drug ballad. In true Squalee fashion the song is deeper than that acting as a cautionary tale to anyone listening. The drugs in this song are not glorified they are a side note as Squalee states repeatedly “I don’t really do drugs anymore”.
SKYLARPENDERGAST features on “Broken Promises” Skylar has appeared in this publication before. His unique voice of reminiscent of 21 Pilots , pleasing to the ear and radio ready.
Finally Squalee enlists the help of Big Homie Hom one of this productions favorite artists. On “Water remix” Squalee comes out kicking dope ass ad-lib laden triplets. Hom steps on the track like a dead Newport his distinctive voice marinating the track for the producer to cook it to perfection. “Dior Cypher” rounds the project out with 4 quick rap-and-go verses over a trap style beat. C Klip, Montana 2x EgoDeath and Prince Cash each deliver nasty verses one after another leaving the listener no time to breathe between them.
Ok Squalee, so waiting 3 years was worth it. This album is firstly a full-length LPwhich in and of itself is a miracle in 2024. The album is easy to play all the way through notably because it’s like listening to three different projects. The spirit of Lil Peep floats over the first few tracks like a hip hop specter. RIP PEEP THO 💯. The next few songs are a trip into a late 90s early 00s mind trip with flows directly out of that time and beats quite similar. Finally the last couple songs inflect a newer dare-I-say trappier vibe with songs that would be right in place alongside 21 Savage or Lil Yachty.
This is a helluva project. The raw emotion of the first few tracks bleeds enough anguish for a Double album. The last track being a cypher is a great way to switch up and avoid monotonous droning. Squalee, take a bow. This shit Smacks. 💯💯💯

It had been tough recording and shooting everything for the album all while getting ready for AG's first tour but she'd pushed through every hurdle. Singing all her parts for the b-sides was easy. Like everything was finally coming together. But now she was stuck on her lines for the second verse of On My Youth.
The producer started the music over.
It's okay Hannah. You got it! This is the one. The dancer hyped herself ready to nail this take.

"Hannah-ssi...."
"You don't have to say it......I already know."

Within the last thirty minutes, Hannah tried and re-tried ten times. TEN. DIFFERENT. TIMES!!! She either came in late or started early
"Why don't you take a break while we reset." Hannah didn't even respond to the producer. She just let her body hit the wall behind her then slid down until her butt hit the floor. She buried her face in her hand. The sounds of frustrated screams were muffled.
You have to nail this.....Everyone's waiting for you so they can finish the song. You're incredibly unprofessional. It's four line in English how is it this hard! Her thoughts kept spiraling. Water began to pool in the corner of her eyes.
"Hannah-ssi? Wanna try again?"
"Cou...could I step out? I'll be right back." Her voice cracked in the middle, betraying her.
"Of course, take as much time as you need." Hannah was out the door and down the hall in seconds. not even noticing two of her members walking by.
"Was that Hannah-jiejie?" Yangyang and Ten watched her run down the hall turning toward the elevators.
"Definetly. Follow her, let me know where she goes. I'm gonna see what happened." Yangyang nodded taking off in Hannah's direction while Ten made his to the recording booth.
He knocked before coming in, smiling when the managers and producers greeted him. "Hello. I hope I'm not interuppting."
Jessica, one of WayV's eldest managers, waved him off, "We were just waiting for Hannah. Did you happen to see her? Is she okay" Jessica asked.
"I came here to ask you. Yangyang and I saw her running down the hall."
One of the producers turned around, "That because she's been having problems with On My Youth. She's probably feels bad cause her part is last thing we need to finish the song." Ten nodded, seeing what the problem is before anyone else explains. His phone beeps with an incoming message for Yangyang
We found Jiejie. She's in our practice room.
"I'll have her back within in thirty minutes. I promise." Ten bowed and rushed out of the room. The WayV group chat was blowing up with messages from the members. Everyone dropping what they were doing to get to Hannah's side.
Ten raced down the hall once the elevator doors opened. The door to the practice room was cracked. As if a closed door would keep him away from his precious dongsaeng. He made sure to close the door behind him and took a seat on the floor across from Winwin near Hannah's feet. There wasn't any tears or sniffling sounds. The older took that as win.
"Hannah?" Kun started grabbing the hand not covering her face, hiding the tear tracks. "If you feel up to it....wanna tell us...whats going on?"
Hannah just sighed, already feeling ridiculous for getting worked up over this. Her thoughts already spiraling at the thinking of what had gone on the past three days.
The dancer bit her lip but still removed the hand from her face. Gently, Xiaojun used a wet tissue to freshen up her face. She nodded, quietly thanking her same aged friend. He wrapped an arm around her waist, his way of accepting her thanks.
Hannah took a deep breath before starting, "I keep messing up. I've missed the timing for my verse for three days straight and I'm this close to letting SM use an ai to finish the song so we can move on." It felt like some of the weight was lifted off her shoulder but some stuck around.
After some time Winwin asked, "Okay. Its normal to have a problem recording. Everyone does but we get through it. And you'll get through this as well." The older's words brought her tears back to the surface. Hannah shook her head, disagreeing.
"I have to nail this. It's been too long. We've been waiting too long. I can't be the reason this comeback is held back. After everything that happened with him," A chill settled in the room. His mention bringing back a year of hurt the seven of them were still getting over. "We don't deserve anymore waiting. Not from me."
A silence fell over them. Nobody really wanting to admit that Hannah.....was right. More than a year of waiting and they were finally coming back. Stronger than they were before. Even more ready to represent the NCT name internationally.
But despite they're readiness, it was still daunting. To comeback after all this time. Had fans forgotten about them. None of them felt like dealing with answering the question of if they were NCT or not again. Phantom was them dipping their toe in to see if the water was warm.
On My Youth was them diving headfirst into the deep end with no floaties. Just waiting to see if they'll sink or float.
"We're not waiting. Not anymore." Kun spoke confidently, determination in his eyes. "It is finally our time. We can't waste it. We have to attack everything we're given. We fought for this." The leader used his pointer finger to draw a circle in the middle of the seven member. "We not giving up now. And no matter how many times any of us mess up a recording or goof off in practice," That gets some laughs from the members, "Nobodies getting left behind.
With every word Kun spoke, the lump in Hannah throat grew smaller and smaller. Maybe what she was really worried about was losing the six boys around her. They had been through so much and this album felt like their last chance. Hannah wanted to make it count. She wanted to give her all.
She wasn't losing WayV without a fight.
Hannah stood up and walked to the door without a single glance at her members.
"Jie-jie! Where are you going."
"The recording booth." She answered with a smile. "I have a song to finish so that we can have an album to promote."
I think it goes without saying Hannah nailed her verse in one shot.

I really wasn't expecting to love On My Youth so much but that album is flawless. It's somehow different but it still feels like WayV!! Also congrats to the boys on becoming million sellers!!

Doing your best isn’t good enough. You have to fight to be better. To constantly improve or you’ll be left behind. Outshone by whoever’s trying to take your spot as the next big thing. So Minho works hard. Really hard.
Today was no different.
He stays late to rehearse the choreography again and again until it’s perfect. It has to be perfect. By the time he was calling it quits, the others had already gone to bed.
The dorm is completely dark when he walks through the door, save for the faint glow of a little nightlight Felix had insisted on having in the bathroom illuminating the hall. His limbs feel like lead as he toes out of his sneakers, making the task seem ten times harder than it needed to be. The promise of his soft bed the only thing keeping him from just plopping down on the couch and continue trudging along down the hall to his room.
As soon as he shut the door behind him, he flops on the bed face down. It’s easy to sink into the plush blankets as his sore muscles relax for the first time all day. He ignores the grumble of his belly, exhaustion taking precedence over anything else with sleep quickly drawing him into a warm embrace.
There’s plenty of time for the mundane aspects of life once the comeback is over.

He gets a look of disgust from Hyunjin as soon as he walks into the practice room with the other three from his dorm. Minho fixes him with a glare in return, too tired to deal with his attitude this early in the morning.
“What,” he snaps.
“You look gross,” Hyunjin retorts with his nose scrunched. He couldn’t say he disagrees. He feels gross. But he didn’t have time to shower before they had to leave.
“Hyung overslept,” Felix chimes unhelpfully, skiddering away before Minho could get a hand on him.
“Traitor,” Minho mumbles as Chan comes up to slap a hand on his shoulder.
“You good?” He asks, honest concern written on his features.
Minho returns the gesture with a forced smirk and a pat on the older’s back. “Yeah, all good,” though he kept their eyes from holding contact for too long. He’d see past the lie otherwise.
If Chan saw through his words, he didn’t let it on since he offers a softer smile. “Glad to hear it. Make sure you get plenty of rest tonight. We need you in tip top shape for the performance this weekend.”
Minho nods in agreement, sighing to himself immediately when Chan walks away. He knows he doesn’t mean it but all Minho could hear was the pressure, pressure, pressure. There is no way he’ll let them down. Not again.
Not ever again.

Into the final verse, he’s exhausted. They all are. He can see it every time his eyes catch one of the others. They’re giving it their all. All the practice, all the blood, sweat, and tears, has led to this performance.
The entire group is prepared to leave everything on this stage for their fans.
They’re so close to the end of the song. He can feel it in the burn of his muscles, the ache in his feet. Each beat hitting harder than the last as they push towards the finish line.
“~bich-i beonjyeo deoug bichnaneun star~” Felix closes, as practiced and poised as they planned.
Minho stood in position, desperately sucking air into his lungs. All of them shift in their places, bodies exhausted but jittering with adrenaline. He peels his eyes away from the dozen cameras as the crowd burst into a fit of cheers. He sees the smiles brightening the other’s faces, a contagious feeling that lifts his own cheeks.
His gaze catches when he looks to Han.
He was looking back at him…but wasn’t at the same time. His face pale through the sheen of sweat covering his skin. Minho’s smile drops. Something was wrong. Very wrong.
“Hannie?” He calls.
But he noticed too late.
It happened so fast. One second Han is standing upright (albeit stiffly, but upright nonetheless), the next he’s flat on the floor. Minho was the first at his side, eyes wide with panic as he carefully checks if he’s breathing. The rapid rise and fall of his chest gives the older very little relief, but at least he’s alive.
There’s a flurry of movement across the stage as people surround him, the members acting as a human shield to protect their brother from the view of the crowd and cameras. Minho stays crouched beside his head, Chan over his shoulder with eyes like a hawk. He doesn’t have to turn around to know the worry that’s wrinkles his brow.
Han is awake, which is good Minho thinks. His round doe eyes are full of fear when he looks up at him. “Hyung?” A confused, unfinished question that Minho already knows how to answer.
“You’re ok, Hannie. Just breathe,” he offers calmly. A false calm that he knows Han needs to avoid panicking. If only he knew the worry swirling in his chest. But instead he cards his fingers gently through the younger’s hair, a familiar soothing motion.
He’d sit there with Han as long as they’d let him. As long as Han wanted him to. All the members would. It’s the only thing they know to do. Stay together and hold each other up. If they didn’t, everything they worked so hard to build would come crashing down.
Stick together and avoid the collapse.

This post is really long and it's mostly for me to write down my thoughts semi-coherently. I apologize if it's incomprehensible😞

This one reminds me of Reo and Nagi, particularly with how hopeful they seemed after reuniting in Manshine.
'Don' means gift that makes you superior to others, kind of like a talent or a skill. The word itself is kind of evocative of something miraculous, which reminds me of how others see Nagi's proficiency in football...
Since I'm procrastinating, I'll translate the song to my best ability and try to explain why I think it fits.
I want to know what's wrong with me

Because, surely, I must have dizzied/annoyed you

Rush my choice
(I feel like this first part could apply to many things. The first two verses could be Reo's point of view of their second breakup, up until 'I can never rush my choice' which feels, to me, like how Nagi was putting off playing football (and developing his own ego) in the first place. Maybe it could be after their match with BM and PXG. More than anything because it reminds me a bit of how Nagi seemed to be unresponsive when Reo told him he was perfect as is in chapter 207, when it was that same thing he thought of negatively in the latest chapter of Episode Nagi.)

(This is Reo during their first breakup. Like, the moment where he wants to tell Nagi to go ahead but he doesn't get the courage to do so. I hope it came through in the translation, but this part gives off the strongest 'I didn't want to know that people changing could be so cruel' vibe.)

(Reo convincing Nagi to join Blue Lock with him. Even though he has planned winning the World Cup with Nagi, he conveniently ignores that if one of them 'wins' Blue Lock, the other wouldn't be able to fulfill their promise. The last line reminds me of how they both thought the other was purposefully ignoring the promise during the second selection. But also it reminds me of Nagi asking Reo to help him during the Manshine game
It could be that, in the end
You've broken the glass in me
Maybe then, you could make me speak
I think you have the gift to cure what's wrong*
(<-end of the chorus)
(This last part is a bit hard to translate. It's very metaphorical but I feel like it doesn't make as much sense in english. The last line is the most important one rn though, it's originally phrased like the person singing has something wrong with them, more like an illness rather than a flaw. The original word replaced by wrong is 'mal', which could be anything bad. A sickness, a disaster, something evil, something saddening... anyways. The original phrasing reminds me of Agi, mostly because of his whole mad doctor persona. In a way, relating this to Nagi and Reo feels like how Agi's attempts got sidelined by the cure they thought would work best: working together.)

But you've seen that I can't detach myself from my role
(* Probably meant as "I wish I could have you around" or "I wish I could be your partner") (This part reminds me of both, from the second selection up to joining Manshine. I can't help but picture those few moments where Reo interacted with Nagi like he was trying to avoid him a bit.)

I'll lower my guard, I'll welcome you and wrap myself in your skin*
Fate has given me unstable hearts
Your words ground me and stop me from collapsing
(*'wrap myself in your skin' sounds creepy but it's the literal translation. It doesn't sound as creepy (unless that's the intention), it's more like I'll warm myself with your skin, which implies an embrace or a hug, something along those lines.) (Also this is Reo during their Manshine rekindling moment. That's all I'll say I think it's clear)
After this part the chorus plays again and the last time it repeats, there's some lyrics added:

Dulce Soledad is literally Sweet Loneliness.
This one has reminded me of Bachira ever since I learned about how the whole Monster thing started, along with the rest of his backstory. I'm not translating the entire thing again but I'll put the parts that remind me of him the most.

They have fun, they amuse themselves, they fall in love, I know
I look at them and no one looks back

This song is pretty short and straight to the point so there's not much to say. The song itself feels like the narrator is stuck in a romantic relationship he can't escape until the 'sweet loneliness' line. I omitted a few lines here and there since I got tired of translating, even though some of them make me think of how he talked about his dependency on the monster during the 4v4 in the second selection.

my very indecisive ranking of an album which i find so fantastic that it’s nearly impossible for me to rank

one cold winter night in 2021, while i was doomscrolling through tiktok, i accidentally stumbled across an original song video by a girl who has become one of my all-time favorite artists. hana bryanne, a singer-songwriter and self-described “emotional brunette” (same.) came out with her debut album dollface in september of this year—and it blew. me. away. hana summarizes the essence of dollface to be “what it’s like being a very sensitive girl in a world that is not always particularly equipped to handle that,” and her beautiful emotional sensitivity clearly levels up her music. dollface is an exemplary member of my favorite genre, which is essentially "poetry with a backing instrumental track.” i love lyrics, and i especially love hana bryanne’s. i find it to be a steep challenge to properly rank an album i find truly amazing, as putting tracks near the bottom is genuinely painful, but i think i’ll manage. here goes nothing!
(TW: some mentions of sexual violence, suicide, and mental health struggle)
1: spades
my obsession with this song is never-ending. i couldn’t possibly be mad at any number-one picks for this album, but i didn’t have any trouble picking mine. the dreamy instrumental that picks up at the second verse, transitioning later into a fantastically swelling and somewhat frenetic electric guitar interlude, and hana’s haunting and beautiful vocals make this track sonically incredible. of course, the lyrics are equally as stunning. they deliver a simple yet poignant account of a past relationship you can’t quite shake the memories of, that haunts you “like a face or a song you should know/but you don’t,” this song communicates so much through sensory description, from “sweet was the smell of the flowers that grew here,” “hot was the taste of your breath in my mouth,” to “in the rain, will you touch me like i planned it?” the imagery of this song is simply delectable. hana draws you into her world, and it feels like you can feel things alongside her as she experiences them. spades is a masterpiece. 
2: dollface
the title track of this album does NOT disappoint. an account of the sexual violence that hana faced as a girl growing up in the age of the internet, this song leaves me gutted every time. the chorus brings a simplistically incredible set of lines: “and he’s gonna want you/and you’re gonna let him” and “he’s not gonna know you/so he’ll call you dollface” capture the certain resignation, defeatedness, and objectification of the issue with absolute stomach-dropping perfection. below is a quote of hana’s that she posted alongside dollface’s announcement that pairs perfectly with this song. it’s imperative that you all see it.

3: clementine
it will never be an easy task to capture the depth of a mother-daughter relationship in any one form of art, but hana does a pretty damn good job. my standout lyrics from clementine are as follows: “at the edge of the bed/in my silhouette/solemn she says/‘i was beautiful then’/i take your hunger/make it mine/i’ll peel apart your clementines/just promise if i change my mind/i’ll still look like you” the inherent connection between a parent and child who have each other’s faces? the yearning of a mother to still look young as her daughter does? peeling clementines as an act of love? (im a sucker for it every time) the mother in the daughter’s silhouette? there’s so much i adore about this, and so much that could be said about it.
4: cool girl song
this is my college anthem. indeed, “i’m a million miles away,” and “pushing at my luck for some good fun.” something i love about this song is it’s acknowledgment of coolness as a complete illusion, and one that you have to work hard at too. “it’s a trick, and a good one.” very cool about it-esque, which this boygenius fanatic appreciates. i love a good account of the never-ending facade of being fine. when i walk around campus with this in my headphones, i can convince myself that i’m a cool girl™️ … plus it’s catchy as hell.
5: doing the play
i LOVE this song. this opening track sets up the coming album with ease and perfection. another song elevated by it’s gorgeous, dreamy instrumentals. i like to think of this song as a voicemail, or perhaps a letter. i won’t speculate on an artist’s personal life, but the message hana leaves—whatever its significance may be—is stunning. i particularly love “i go to bed with the same old jokes/i’d go to bat for the strangers first,” as a moment of striking self-reflection amid her memories. this song carries a certain nostalgia i can’t get enough of. 
6: visions
visions was released as a single in the spring, and i could not stop listening to it. hana repeats the line “i just can’t stand to be alone these days” throughout the song, and yet the line “keeps me like a secret, my own company/i’m reaping what i’ve sown” reveals a certain self-isolation at play in the same issue. hana sings about her ever-present loneliness while the instrumentals carry on steadily with the breeziness that she tries to convey to the rest of her world. an intentional choice, most likely, as hana has discussed concerning the track how “mental illness especially makes you a really good liar… self-isolation is really challenging and that’s what I wrote the song about.” (note-another perfect walking across campus song. enjoy.)
7: susannah at the wedding
this song is so good. i’m already questioning my ranking. this track 3 brings the most upbeat production out of any track on the album, and it is FUN! at least the instrumental is…the lyrics? well, that’s a different story. what i love about this choice is that the upbeatness of the track vs. the melancholy and frustration in the lyrics create a perfect conflict to mirror the internal conflict of feeling shitty at a wedding, an occasion that’s supposed to be idealistically fun and joyful. the outro, with it’s 9x repetition of “there’s no room in you for the things that i like” is a personal favorite. something about the anguish of an obsessively repeated outro will hit home every time. 
8: lake michigan
lines like “i have seen things i wish to tell you/i have seen things you’d never wish to know” make it feel like such a rich history backs this song, so in line with hana’s amazing personal authenticity. there is so much vulnerability in the words of this song, like so much of the album as a whole, and it elevates the experience of listening by 100 times. her vocal delivery shines on this song, like the emotion behind “come on baby try me/i can show you what dramatic is” which once again hits home for us sensitive, emotional girlies out there, and the crystal clarity of her voice on even the highest notes will never cease to be incredible. 
9: dollface reprise 
being a reprise, this track is much simpler than many of the others, but this only adds to its beauty. the quiet guitar and vocals make it feel so intimate and reflective, perfect for this song. the callback to 2021’s tiktok famous klepto in the bridge/outro was so exciting to hear, and so beautifully integrated to the new track. “i’ve got a good thing goin’/just gotta live a little longer” feels so familiar to the feeling of living on the permanent precipice of being a young person, constantly riding the line between exciting success and falling apart into utter chaos. 
as we get into the lower numbers, i will restate that the placement here is literally just because of my own personal sonic preferences. every single one of these songs is beautiful. go listen to dollface. 
10: valentine’s day
this song is beautiful and heartbreaking. hana has stated that her suicide attempt from 2022 inspired much of the content on this album, and this song definitely reads to me as having a lot of content about struggle with mental health, and the isolation and coldness of that experience. the theme of resignation and defeatedness that i think is done so beautifully in parts of this album returns with “they’ll drag me back down by my ankles/no fight, no light in my eyes/no sound.” 
11: news
my favorite lyrics from doing the play make a return! yippee! this is another track that i resonate with so well as a young person in the midst of the hurricane that is growing up. i love the lines “you tell me i’m changing, i say i know/but i still know how to put on a good show.” so much intrigue lies in the minute details of any song, and i adore the word choice on “i’m betting the news is good/i’m betting the news is just fine,” as whatever the news is, she isn’t actually hearing it. just betting. whether this is about news from back home, news about the world, news from an old friend or partner, or something else, this small detail holds so much meaning to me. 
12: clementine II 
this felt like the most reasonable bottom pick, solely because of it’s short length and lyrical simplicity, but it still hurts. i love this whole album!!! this song is still fantastic. following clementine. a song about a hana’s relationship with her mother, the lyrics of this song are devastating. “won’t you stay where i can see you/won’t you stay where i can go/won’t you stay where if i need to i can let you know.” this refrain is beautiful and heartbreaking. this woman knows just how to tug at my sad little college student heartstrings. brb, calling my mom as i write this (and shedding a tear, perhaps). 
and that’s it!!! a final note from hana’s words about the album: “dollface is about resilience.” this album delivers such a beautiful message and story through some of the most gorgeous-sounding vocals and instrumentals that i've heard this year. i hope i was able to communicate a fraction of this album’s genius. decide for yourself! pleaseee pretty please go listen to it! i’ll link it on spotify right down here.

I'd Rather Drown
Amazing pick!! You askers have somehow already found both of my favourite songs from cinematics. Let's dive in.
I'd rather drown is another absolute masterpiece of a song. Unlike songs like plastic promises, which I warmed up to over time, the very first time I heard this song I knew I loved it. My very high opinion of this song has remained consistent over the three years I've been listening to sio, so consistent in fact that it is my 5th most listened to song on spotify of all time.
The electronic synth intro is iconic, and always brings me joy when I hear it. I absolutely love the biting way Cody sings the lyrics, and the way it all flows together is so satisfying, especially the line "how to treat people like a piece of meat". That line scratches my brain in such a good way. The verses are super catchy, and the pre-choruses are absolutely excellent. The way the drums slow down for the first two lines, then go fast again as they lead into the chorus always gets me moving, whether it's head banging or tapping my foot. (That usually depends on if I'm alone lol.) Also, the way Cody says "heartless snare" in his accent is super satisfying to me as an english person, and always fun to replicate when I'm singing it myself.
The chorus is incredible, and so catchy it's almost unbelievable. What a world, where because of Cody Carson, I constantly find myself singing "burn the bitch down" under my breath in a pleasant tone while making lunch. "I never will cross that bridge again" is another fun line to say in Cody's accent. The whole thing is so theatrical, I find myself making facial expressions and gesturing dramatically whenever I'm singing this chorus, that's how epic it is. It might actually be tied with freak show for best sio chorus of all time. "I never let people in, and I have you to remind me why" is SUCH a good melody to sing.
There are even notable changes to the second verse, such as the isolated beating drums behind "making boys drool at her will" and the way he goes higher and longer when he sings "the one I bear". Amazing stuff, you know a song is special when the verses are melodically different.
But honestly, the highlight of this perfect song is literally everything that comes after the second chorus. The bridge is sheer excellence, with Cody screaming the last line of the chorus blending so well into the "drown me" and so on, which always gives me goosebumps because of the satisfyingly smooth way Cody sings it. And then the ascending "rather"s and the absolutely iconic "sing it boys" sets the tone for one of the best sio song finales ever.
I mean, the stripped back beginning of the chorus with almost choir like backing vocals, the epic drums leading into the instruments coming back faster than before, and the absolutely incredible layered vocals from Cody that finishes out the song?? I mean, nothing I say can fully capture the majesty that is the ending of this song. Everyone say thank you Cody Carson for this pure masterpiece.
10/10, perfection, and my 7th favourite sio song of all time. Cody, you'd better play this song the next time you tour the uk. If you don't I will never forgive you.

I’ve been chewing FITF for a few days no stop now and I want to say a couple of things. I am in my feels lately, cause a lot of new stuff is happening around me, lots of changes and adjustments. I have been listening with a different heart. I feel like Louis matured through this album, not musically cause I am not an expert and I can’t comment on quality or whatever. He grew up conceptually and his new approach feels more aware and conscious. He is the usual clever self who articulates so well in his songs, but also a different Louis. He feels like he is in a place where things seem clearer. There are a few themes that remain constant throughout the album.
Starting from the greatest, the perfect album opener. He presents like a man on a mission, but in true Louis’ core. He reassures, he protects, he confirms. He’s Louis, he’s reliable and he is making you that promise. You and him until the end. The end of what is not for us to know. Definitely, til the end of this album. You’re his for 51 minutes (but he’ll have you hostage for ever).
Even the sexiest WAOYF gives this idea of maturity, but make it like “the adults are talking” kinda. He has no time for bullshit lol it runs out of the comfort he seems to bring in other songs and the comparison is telling at some point. Second song and he is already ready to talk. He wants to talk when it’s intimate, when it’s “back to loving”. I love the BDE of it all, anyway.
I think BTM opens a new chapter in his music conceptually. He sets a new standard for his optimism. He said fitf does not automatically mean things are perfect or gonna get better, but it’s more how you adapt your attitude towards it. Looking at the glass half full does no harm. I think he portrayed this new view on many songs (lucky, face the music, love the way it goes etc). He came out of his teenaged illusion of things going to change to be good. I think he partially has come to terms with whatever situation he’s navigating and he has accepted it. I’m not saying he gave up, but I think he got the chance to meet his limits and know his boundaries and this is helping him move on. It’s a new chapter of Louis’ restless positivity.
Lucky again is one paragraph. I think it embodies the determination with no regret (life I would choose). Also the light/darkness mentions start coming. We see the a lot and I can’t help wonder if he uses the light/fade them to express the awareness of his situation and how He’s possibly embracing it.
Face the music is such a good song. My first impression was omg I need to go back and listen to it again. There’s a say in italian “questa è la musica, così balliamo” / this is the music, now we dance. We use it when we don’t like how things are going but that’s the only option we have. I think he is very open here. I mean… this is the song where he says “a story’s made up when we were young to scare us”………
Chicago. Chicago chicago. Take it how you want it, to me it’s about an old friendship. He’s missing them. Chicago is an apology song, but again there’s no regret. In this new album, He acknowledges many things went wrong in the past, the future is to be written tho.
All this time, my baby! You deserve a post of your own. Just a few key points: King Mida, communication issues, SO MUCH vulnerability, queer.
Out of my system is a bop period. Headline got me snorting for the “beauty and kindness” verse lmao he was very savage for this. Anyway I call it the swing song. I have no serious opinions on these two lol
Is there anything more mature than grief? Saturdays stroke me at round 1. It was so vulnerable and rough, but with the usual touch of gentleness. A typical Louis. Saturdays is about grief, his personal journey through it. I don’t want this post to be a huge rumble line by line, but Louis is very good at painting precise scenes with lyrics and you can see it all in Saturdays. It’s about loss and how thinking back to little moments helps him to cope. It’s a very hard to listen to, but I relate to this burden he narrates. that’s why it’s my most streammed song lmao in a word: Leopardiano (and I talked about it in another post!!)
The slide into silver tongues is so clean! It’s moving lmao love it and I love silver tongues too. She is beauty is such a vibe, a philosophical trip. Also light/darkness is here again. I want to read into it more when I got time!
I know I always quote authors I studied in high school, but Common people gave me strong Verga vibes. It’s when the place you live holds you way too tight, but you wouldn’t choose anywhere else. It’s about the love/hate dilemma with the place you live, you grew up in. Verga would say “if you leave, everything and everyone will change and you will become the foreigner” (you’ll hear strangers calling your name”)
Angels fly is the prettiest of them all. Best friend Louis is my favourite Louis. Same for that’s the way love goes.
Holding onto heartache deserves a different post. Lot to talk about. I had chills for the bridge, still have them. It’s so true and when you’re a lonely wolf like me it hits too close to home.
I realised I really don’t care about who these songs are for, what they are about. They just happen to be here when I needed them the most and that’s probably what makes this album so special to me. I love it because it is good, very good, but also because it’s here to say things I need to hear the most.

Kinda self indulgent, She by Dodie is one of my all time favourite songs and I love to think about how angelic maya would sound singing it, so here’s something, it’s short and sweet but I hope you like it, I enjoyed writing it.

You were early a little early when you got to robins house. you were picking Robin up to go see some movie, you really weren’t interested but you know Robin was and you wouldn’t pass any opportunity to spend time with her. You knocked at the door before letting yourself in, making sure to leave you shoes by the door. stood in her door way, robins back to the door as she sat hunched over scribbling in a note book, before leaning over to grab her guitar. She clears her throat, before carefully plucking at the strings.
“Am I allowed, to look at her like that? Could it be wrong, when she’s just so nice to look at?” she stops grabbing her note book again, scribbling something else down before strumming at the guitar. “And she smells like lemon grass and sleep” as she continues to sing, you feel the tickling sensation of a sneezes bubble in your nose. You try your hardest to keep it in. Robins turns to face you her cheeks bright red.
“How long have you been there”
“I like your song” your voice was bearly above a whisper, stepping into her room
“You-you do?” You nod
“Can I hear the rest?”
“It’s not finished yet” you kneel on the bed. Your gaze falling on to her beat up notebook. ‘she means everything to me’
“Who’s it about, the lucky girl?” You chew your bottom lip nervously, in your dreams it would be about you, after all you’ve had the biggest crush on her ever since you partnered up in science, well over a year ago now.
“No one”
“Robin Buckley I don’t believe that for one second, cmon tell me who’s your muse, I’d never tell, I’d never say a word” you promise, holding out your pinky, instead she takes takes her pen, quickly writing what you had just said down in.
“You’re a genius y/n, you know that right” she gives you a small smile, her eyes licking with yours for a split second, then to our still out stretched pinkie. You sigh intertwining your other pinking with your own, and leaving your hands in your lap.
“I try” you watch as her brows knit together crossing something out, circling a verse and drawing an arrow. The air was thick, robins short wavey locks falling infront of her eyes as she chews on the end of her pen. It taking everything in you to not reach over to comb it behind her ear. You were scared to break the silence, so you didn’t.
“It’s not perfect yet, but can I play it for you.. if you promise not to laugh too much” Robin nervously asks. You hold your pinky out again, this time robin wraps her pinkie around yours. She wipes her palms on her knees, before taking a deep breath playing the guitar. You watch in amazement as her slender fingers danced with the strings. Her eyes closed, as she takes a deep breath
“….She means everything to me”
“Robin- I have no words” she covers her face, before wiping away a stray tear.
“Sometimes I struggle to find the words” robin starts, taking your hand, her finger tips cold. “I- it’s really silly but I like to write songs”
“Have you ever wrote a song for me?”
“Y/n” Robin let’s out a breathy breath. “Sometimes you’re really clueless”

This one tonally might not be for everyone tbh but I legit got chills the first time it popped up into my discover weekly lol, the contrast of harsh instrumentals, the angelic humming and the guttural lyrics... its Francis vibes to a 'T' LOL While I don't really relate the actual words in the lyrics that much with him the overall vibe is too perfect! (Save for the end ;^)

Look, I can't talk about Sam and music without bringing this song up ok?? I relate it a lot to Sam's personal struggle at both trying to to the right thing as a person and Do the Right Thing™️ as an authority figure. I also relate it a little with him pondering if he's actually a good person or not...in the eyes of God has he done the right thing? It's soft and bittersweet and just perfect...

Why? No! No! Valeria!
I've seen people speculating about who is her before, how she must have been a fellow Dax soldier to Teshin, who lost her life protecting the Orokin against the Tenno, or, perhaps one of the Golden Lords themselves, massacred, with him being able only to watch.
However, I don't think she would have been any of those things, in fact I don't think she died during the fights at all.
I came up with this theory while rewatching the Duviri Paradox trailer and especially from the comment made during the Devstream, that Teshin will be an important character to the Duviri plot.
So, I'm gonna start at the end, saying it now, evidence under the picture, that this lady IS Valeria herself, or at least the person who is meant to represent her in Duviri.

And I hear you saying: "You lost your mind!"
And all I have to say to this is "I've been non-stop thinking about a character that was name-dropped once, and was relevant for 10 full seconds with literally 0 information on her other that her name, FOR 2 WEEKS, OF COURSE I LOST MY FUCKING MIND. "
Now, having that covered, the promised evidence:
The Yuvan Theatre
The first time we hear about the Yuvan theater is during the War Within quest. Teshin describes it like this:
"A Yuvan theater, long abandoned. In ages past, I would have stood guard as the young and exotic were paraded through the mountain pass and marched by the viewing pane. They'd barter here, the Orokin. Withering and coughing as they prepared for their Continuity."
Part of the ceremony was described by Ordis like this:
"A harpish voice sings a song they've prepared in my honor. Its title the same as mine: 'Beast of the Bones'. I feel the crowd pulled inward, enraptured by the brutal verses, the sickening chorus."
Teshin, as a guard of the Golden Lords, would have had every chance to meet, talk, and have a close relationship with one of the singers of the theater, especially considering his own interests.
He gives us advice about our choices in a poem, one that he starts quoting even under the veil, he talks in riddles and verses, he believes having your mind be as sharp as your blade is a must, it's not at all out of character for him to be fascinated by this part of the Orokin's culture, and to seek out someone who can tell him all about it.
Faces of Duviri
Duviri is full of new, and old, faces, however only a few of those were important enough to appear in the trailers. Dominus Thrax, Bombastine, Teshin, and the singer who entertains Dominus.
In Duviri Dominus clearly meant to represent the Orokin, ruling above all, while everyone else is hoping for him to look at them favorably, and don't make their lives miserable. I believe Duviri is a world meant to torment those who entered it, most obviously by ridding the world of color.
The Drifter also has to parade around as the person, who he despises the most - Dominus - and Teshin? Well, he has to listen to the singing from far away.
(Interesting how the only 2 "places" that naturally have color in Duviri are Teshin's cave, and around the opera singer.)
(Even more interesting, is that if you go close to the Lone Guardian in a Conjunction Survival mission, you can hear her singing.)
The young and exotic
Another interesting thing in Duviri is how the citizens are the ones who look like the Orokin. Blue skin, one arm longer than the other, clothes inspired by Ancient Greece...
If Valeria looked like the singer in Duviri, then she must have been a perfect candidate for Continuity, wouldn't she?
And when the Veil started working on Teshin, the first thing it reminded him of were the lines of the Litany of the Dax that tell you to be patient, and do nothing, and just see how things turn out.
The Veil
A strange thing about the Veil is that it doesn't make you focus on a bad memory, but it very specifically turns memories "inside out".
When the Drifter got theirs the Veil would have had a much easier time reminding us of all those time when the Lotus abandoned us, when Margulis lied to us, but no, it instead started rewriting our memories of Margulis, to fit better with Ballas' fairy tale.
This tells me that memories seen by the Veil are fake, even if they are based on truth. However, Teshin was fighting against the influence of it, so there's a good chance that what he says is based on truth.
But... what does he say exactly?
Why? No! No! Valeria!
Why? Why would he ask "why" like that when the Tenno are killing the Dax and the Orokin around him left and right. There isn't really a question there, and even if there was, wouldn't that be angry? That "why" just sound... I don't know... not one said in the middle of the battlefield, but when something catches you completely off guard.
The whole thing sounds more like "I refuse to believe what you just said to me" rather than "how dare you kill her / oh no, she's dead".
"I-I can... see her... Tenno... why???"
Now, this is where things turn VERY good. Can you HEAR the amount of focus put on the word SEE?
This line to me obviously was said when the Tenno killed the Orokin, that used Valeria's body as their own. But something was out of place, which is that Teshin associates her with VOICE, the opera singer who he listened to for years while on duty, and he knows when "she" dies that he only SEES her at that moment.
He is confused at that memory, he was confused when it happened, knowing that Valeria was dead, yet seeing her die again, in the hands of the Tenno. And that's what the Veil can use, turning him against us. However, just like how the Drifter could tear down their mask, because of the absurdity of what they were hearing, that Ballas was the one who loved and saved them, well, Teshin too knew and felt how absurd all of it was, the anger and broken trust in the Orokin, hearing the voice of the one who gave Valeria the Kuva clashing with false memories.
And so he broke free, just to then fall into the Duviri, where a familiar tune started playing in that very moment.
