Habitat- Southern Central America
Size (Weight/Length)- 4.5 cm
Diet- Fruit
Cool Facts- The leaf-cuddling Honduran white bat made quite the rounds on the internet due to their adorable sleeping arrangements. During the day, these bats group together in ‘tents’ made out of leaves by cutting them open in the midrib with their teeth. The tents are constructed by multiple bats and are lived in for multiple weeks until the leaf dies. Colonies usually consist of 1-15 individuals and their offspring. The leaves give further protection from predators by making the Honduran white bat’s fur appear green when sunlight casts onto the leaf. These bats feed almost exclusively on figs. The yellow carotenoids in the fruit result in the yellow coloration on the bat’s nose and ears, resulting in the Honduran white bat being one of the only mammals to have coloration based on their diet.

Today's Bat: Honduran White Bat
The Honduran White Bat is the first line of defense against bat-haters. "Bats are ugly-" WRONG. "Bats carry disease-" NOT THIS GUY. The second someone says they don't like bats, for any given reason, I want you to pull this picture up on your phone and tell them they're WRONG:
Environmental Impact: Not much is known about how Honduran White Bats affect their environments. They live across Panama, Honduras, and parts of Central America. They're frugivores, but don't disperse seeds. They aren't known to carry any pests or diseases. They are, of course, famed for their roost-making behavior: by chewing along the ribs of heliconia leaves, they create tents in which to rest, camouflaged from predators. Fun fact: their roosts are mixed-sex until mating season, at which point the bats will split into "bachelor" and "maternal" roosts for patrol and child-rearing, respectively. Unfortunately, the species is currently classified as "near-threatened" on the IUCN Red List because of habitat destruction.

Beauty: I mean, look at them. Each is around two inches tall and weighs 5 grams. Their unique orange-yellow accents stand out against their white coats, making them look like cotton ball art dolls. Even if you aren't an enjoyer of leaf noses and echolocator's ears (which I very much am), you've gotta admit these guys are something special.

Power: Remember the unique orange-yellow coloration of their ears, nose, and wings? This pigment comes from lutein, a carotenoid often found in fruits in vegetables. Most mammals disperse these pigments evenly around the body, but Honduran White Bats take advantage of lutein's oxygen-carrying properties and accumulate the pigment at the spots of their body most likely to be injured to allow for speedier healing. This unique property makes them an object of scientific curiosity, as understanding how they utilize lutein may lead to developments in treatment and prevention of macular degeneration in humans!

Meet October's Pal of the Month: the Honduran White Bat!
The Honduran white bat, among the smallest bats in the world, is known for its unique tent-making ability. By chewing along the veins of heliconia leaves and forcing them to droop, they create shelter from the sun and predators. But then, why white fur and not green? Light shining through the leaf tent makes their fur appear more green, helping them camouflage. These bats also have black membrane over their skulls, which is believed to shield them from UV light.
The bat's diet of figs gives it lutein, an antioxidant that causes it's yellow appendages. It is the only mammal with enough lutein to cause that skin color. Since lutein is a carotenoid, it protects the bat's eyes from damage. Researchers are studying this in relation to macular degeneration in humans. The Honduran White Bat population size is unknown, but rainforest destruction is decreasing their habitat and they are very close to being classed as "vulnerable".

Phantom Moth AU: The Phantom’s Backstory/Abilities
Trying to get this out of my head. Here are some headcannons I came up with for my Phantom Moth AU about the Phantom.
Like probably other people in the fandom, I like the idea of Tom Phan starting out as a normal Rabbid with big dreams at the bottom of the rung.
While exploring, an accident befalls him that oddly involves a gramophone and a bat resulting in his death. As a result, he becomes a giant ghost bat.
Legend has it that someone sent the bat to kill him for fortune and fame. Ever since, Tom wants revenge!
The only white bat in real life that exists (I think) is the Honduran White Bat, a cute bat that eats figs and constructs leaf tents to sleep in. Phantom is a little different. His color scheme is white and pink, and although he does like eating sweets every now and then, Phantom will eat almost anything. His favorite food? Any living being/souls. Don’t know if he would like making tents.
For a while, Phantom has been hiding underground, only going out at night to feed and mingle while making a secret reputation for himself. But when he decides to do the contest and finds the one being he could be a partner to, he’s convinced to become more active. To get closer to MC and to be in the spotlight, Phantom decides to appear in the daylight as Tom Phan. Basically his canon form except he does his hair, moustache, and clothes casually, he’s at a height more acceptable to the public, and since the spotlight is not on him, instead of a gramophone, there’s just a belly. He also sprouted legs with his powers so he appears as a normal Rabbid. He feels it’s necessary to not be in the spotlight so he could rise to fame and dote on MC normally. At night, he’s back to his giant monster self.
Phantom’s true form is 100 feet tall with a wing span and gramophone to match. And his teeth are fangs.
His sound powers are enhanced in this AU. Along with the canon powers, he is able to control his volume, mimic other voices, throw his voice around, hypnotize others, and use echolocation.
Devouring people and souls not only makes him bigger, but each prey consumed adds a voice bank to his gramophone. Meaning that he could be his own chorus and use other voices to his advantage.
Phantom does have the power to eat someone and they’ll be safe. Depending on who the person is, they end up in different areas. For example, if MC asks him to protect their bodyguard Otieno, Phantom would send him right where the gramophone is. It’s basically the most protected area because that’s where the voices reside. It’s like hearing everything at full volume in there. If it’s MC, however, he would send them right near where his heart would be. Semi-related note, he is not above putting the MC as jewelry to wear.
The more of a bond Phantom has with MC, the more power he has and the more fused they seem. At one point, if the MC feels a strong emotion, their voice would come out of Phantom along with his in a perfect blend.
Just like canon, Phantom is not as popular as he acts compared to the other monsters in the city, but he is slowly rising into power.

These are my guys here:

They are tiny little angels that roost together in leaf tents that they make by biting at the inner veins of large leaves, causing it to fold down and create a tent of sorts. They are usually around 9 grams in weight and specialize in eating figs from a species of tree known as ficus colubrinae. They are listed as near threatened as areas where this tree grows are being destroyed by human encroachment.

Gen 5 really likes its blind cave-dwellers! And since there needed to be a “Unovan Zubat”, there was a perfect opportunity to cover Woobat’s eyes in fur! (Plus, like Zubat it tends to appear in every cave in the region! But I don’t think it got nearly as annoying... correct me if I’m wrong.)
It’s unknown if Woobat can hold onto anything with its wings, nor if it has feet... because it tends to stick to cave walls with its nose! When it pries itself off, its nostrils leave behind a heart-shaped mark. Apparently if this mark is left on your body (in a sort of weird Woobat eskimo kiss?) it’s good luck... but since this also manifests as the move Heart Stamp, perhaps it’s not worth it...

The Honduran white bat (Ectophylla alba), also called the Caribbean white tent-making bat, is a species of bat in the family Phyllostomatidae. It is the only member of the genus Ectophylla. The genus and the species were both scientifically described for the first time in 1892. It has distinctive, entirely white fur, which is only found in six of the roughly 1,300 known species of bat. It constructs "tents" out of understory plant leaves by strategically cutting the leaf ribs with its teeth; it roosts in these tents during the day.

These little bats make leaf tents to sleep in during the day. The tents protect them from predators and rain. Weighing only about as much as an American nickel, the Honduran white bat is one if the smallest fruit eating bats.

So this is for @veterveter because she wanted Bat content and so because I love bats and I love her she will get it.
So these guys are Honduran White Bats (scientific name: Ectophylla alba) they are found excusively in some parts of Honduras, Nicaragua and Costa Rica. It is a specialist frugivore, consuming almost exclusively the fruits of one species of fig.
They make nests that are called 'tents' out of understory plant leaves (like Banana tree leaves) by cutting the leaf with their teeth and they rest in these tents during the day.
