Retrospective Review: Sean Connery & George Lazenby Bond Era
So I started watching old Bond movies as lead up to No Time to Die, which I'm really excited for. I have actually never seen any of the older Bond movies beyond the Brosnan era in their entirety. Brosnan was the Bond I knew growing up and I really started loving Bond movies only starting Casino Royale. I was worried that I would be really bored by the older Bond movies. I do have difficulty watching older movies at times, especially older action and effects movies because they are quite often very dated. But Connery especially is so beloved among the Bond fan community that I was eager to watch it. So I have watched all 7 of Connery's films, including the Non-EON Never Say Never Again as well as Lazenby's On Her Majesty's Secret Service. I would say that the movies are a mixed bag so far.
I think the Connery era started out strong and peaked at Goldfinger. I think Dr. No is a pretty good introduction. Its a little slow in the middle of the movie, but Dr. No is an effective villain and it ends well. From Russia with Love is better. Its probably the most grounded of Connery's Bond movies. I loved Robert Shaw as the assassin. Goldfinger is where the full Bond formula was formed, with all the tropes that the Bond movies are now famous for. I think its the most fun of the Connery era movies and the best paced film. From Goldfinger onwards, I think the Connery Bond movies slipped in quality. Thunderball is decent but there are a lot of action sequences under water and I feel the technology just wasn't there to film those scenes because I can barely tell who is who and what is happening in some of those underwater action scenes. It has also one of the unintentionally funniest assassination attempt scenes in the spa scene. I lost it when Bond was strapped to that cycle and was screaming for help. I really don't like You Only Live Twice. Its a full blown descent into camp. You feel bad for the Japanese actresses so obviously struggling with their English. And there is that weird makeup up job to make Connery look like Japanese, even though he doesn't really change much at all. Diamonds are Forever is an ordinary follow up to OHMSS. It really should have been a full blown revenge story. In theory, if not execution, it should have been the QoS of this era. But it ends up being a pretty silly adventure. Never Say Never Again is a remake of Thunderball. On one hand, the underwater scenes are significantly better, which is a measure of the improved technology in the 15 year gap between Thunderball and NSNA. But the movie just drags on and on in the second half. If could have been like 20 minutes shorter. And I still don't know what Largo was really doing with the bombs. Also, the film doesn't make use of the intriguing potential of an older Bond. It starts out showing how Bond is not at his peak, but everything after the first act is just Bond as usual. The movie I loved the most or at least tied with Goldfinger is ironically OHMSS. This is a large part to the fact that it has by far the best Bond girl of the era. It took me a while to realize that Tracy was played by the Queen of Thorns Diana Rigg herself. No wonder I liked her. The film also has the best Blofeld of the era.
In general, the Bond girls of this era are basically just people that Bond has to seduce. Even the villainous Bond girls are just there to be seduced. There are a few memorable ones. Pussy Galore is a name of legend. The Bond girls in Thunderball are all gorgeous. Kim Basinger in NSNA is always wonderful, but definitely Tracy remains far and away the stand out Bond girl out of all these films. There are definitely dated elements when it comes to the women in these movies. Just have to view them as films of the era. Bonds actions gets a far few of them killed. Jill Masterson's death in Goldfinger is definitely very much his responsibility. There is one absolutely hilarious scene in Diamonds are Forever where a half naked Plenty O'Toole gets tossed out of a high rise building into the pool barely before she can protest. That again just cracked me up for several minutes and surely that wasn't the reaction they were going for. Both Domino's I guess at least for to kill Largo in Thunderball and NSNA.
With regards to villains, there are a few that stick out. Definitely Blofeld and SPECTRE being the big organization, are the villains in all the films other than Goldfinger. I think Dr. No was a good villain. I quite enjoyed Robert Shaw as Donald Grant as well as Rosa Klebb in FRWL. Goldfinger was great. He was a break from the SPECTRE related villains. Bloefeld in OHMSS is great.
With regards to Bond himself, Connery is charm and charisma personified. There are times where the film's get repetitive with Bond seducing every woman he finds, the same flirtation scene with Moneypenny, the scenes with M etc... But through it all, Connery stands tall. He is really the big highlight of every film he's in, even in the ones that don't work much. I get why he's the Bond of an entire generation. Even in NSNA, when he's 50+, you still buy that he can do all the things he does. Lazenby is the one that surprised me. I think he really works well in OHMSS. Whereas Connery has this larger than life and almost invincible persona about, Lazenby feels younger and more vulnerable. And that's why he works so well in a movie where Bond essentially does not completely defeat the enemy and loses the woman he loves. I think he's excellent in the role. He's not got the natural charm and charisma of Connery, but he brings something different.
Anyways, next to the Roger Moore era of Bond. I am not sure how much I will enjoy it since I've heard his era of Bond really becomes goofy and outlandish. But I guess I will wait and see.

Goldfinger (1964, Bond No. 3, Dir. Guy Hamilton)
Now we’re cooking with gas.  Goldfinger has it all....the action, the sex, the gadgets, the Aston Martin, all the pieces for a true Bond flick are present.  Not to say that Dr. No or From Russia With Love aren’t true bond flicks, but to me, they were in effect just the warm-up for Goldfinger.
Tumblr media
Sean Connery is back, this time up against Auric Goldfinger, a....really unintimidating but still somehow awesome villain with a real plan.  One of the weaker points of FRWL’s plot was that SPECTRE’s endgame was to sell the stolen Lektor decoding device BACK to the very Russians from which an unwitting Bond had taken it from.  Neither exceptionally smart nor inventive.  Or evil for that matter. Goldie’s master plan is to effectively trash the US’s economy.
Tumblr media
German actor and former Nazi Gert Frobe seems like a kind of buffoonish character at first, but as the movie progresses, he becomes quite menacing.  His henchman is one of the legends, though, in the form of Japanese-American Olympian weight lifter Harold Sakata as MOTHER FUCKING ODDJOB.  Most moviegoers, and hell, any child who grew up in the 90′s with a Nintendo 64 knows well the perils of Oddjob and diminuative stature, to say nothing of his lethal bladed top hat.
The main Bond girl in this one is Honor Blackman as....lets say it together....Pussy Galore.  Stupid name aside, she’s a cool character with some pretty sweet judo moves with which she uses to throw around the much larger Sean Connery with seemingly little effort. Also of note is Shirley Eaton as Jill Masterson, a Goldfinger aide and the first woman in the film to be seduced by Bond. For this betrayal, Goldfinger kills her through "skin suffocation" by painting her body completely gold, an image that is synonymous with the film.
The production values got a big kick in the butt for Goldfinger.  Several very large sets are present, with the interior of Goldfinger’s Kentucky home and the inside of the Fort Knox gold depository being stand outs.  Also some very good (at least for the time.  This was the mid sixties so set expectations accordingly.) special effects, such as when Oddjob “blows a fuse” (an effect which seriously burned Harold Sakata), or the famous laser beam scene.  This film also marks the longstanding relationship between the James Bond franchise and English sports car manufacturer Aston Martin, a collaboration, which while not present in every film, persists well into the Craig era (a funny note, the two cars used in Goldfinger had to be bought from Aston Martin at full price.....that includes the one that was crash.  Following the smash success of the movie, and inevitable bump in the sales of Astons, EON studios never had to pay for another car).  I mean, does the Q-customized DB5 really need to be introduced?
An odd bit of trivia I want to address concerns Sean Connery's hair. Or lack there of. It's pretty commonly known that Connery started to lose his hair early in his life. While he did not wear a toupee for his first two Bond outings, it did required some creativity. Essentially they gave it the Donald Trump treatment. However, by Goldfinger it was thinning to the point that a toupee was a necessity.
Tumblr media
The public’s verdict on Goldfinger was swift and pretty damn amazing.  On a budget of 3 mil (nearly three times that of Dr. No, but still pretty small.),  Goldfinger grossed a cool 125 million in the box office, holding the Guinness book of world records record for the fastest grossing film of all time up until that point.  With the the highest expectations for the series, it was only a matter of time before Bond was back...

From Russia With Love (1963) There isn’t much to say about this gunbarrel. It introduces us to the more familiar score and pace that is featured in subsequent films. It’s a “classic” Bond gunbarrel with no frills, as is the film itself. FRWL is a no-nonsense espionage yarn; the characters are deadly vipers and many of the scenarios they find themselves in are tinged with claustrophobia.
And since Sputnik’s beep and boops from Dr. No aren’t lulling me into a strange hypnosis, I allow myself to watch Bob Simmons’ movement a bit more. Notice how, in the split second before he turns and shoots, he hesitates ever so slightly? Yeah, I would’ve shot his ass first too. Still, that gunshot sound effect is pretty commanding, and it’s telling you that you better sit your butt down and watch this movie, because it’s a pretty good one. A-

Film Review: GF Part 1 - The real world but with extra kick.
Film Review: GF Part 1 – The real world but with extra kick.
It has been argued many times over that Goldfinger (1964), directed by Guy Hamilton and the third film in the 007 series, is the one that sent the Bond brand through the stratosphere of popularity and monetary success. The first two entries, DR and FRWL, had met considerable recognition worldwide (Russia’s budget was doubled from that of DNgiven how well the first turned out), but several factors…

Teacher Cuts Tennis Balls In Half And Glues Them To Chairs, Sees Immediate Change In Students
Being a teacher is a very challenging job. In addition to teaching kids necessary educational materials, they are also often in charge of teaching kids life lessons, appropriate behavior, and how to interact with other students.
Many teachers don’t get the thanks or appreciation they deserve from their students, even though they have one of the most difficult jobs.
One elementary school teacher in Round Lake, Illinois, is finally getting the recognition she deserves after creating an incredibly useful product: a tennis ball chair.
You might be thinking you’ve seen tennis ball chairs before, but you’re probably picturing chairs with tennis balls over the feet to prevent scuffs.
This teacher, AmyMaplethorpe, created a chair that uses tennis ball halves to help students with sensory issues.
Amy teaches at Raymond Ellis Elementary School in the speech and language department. After coming across a similar idea on Pinterest, Amy realized the tennis ball chair could be extremely beneficial to her students.

After creating the tennis ball chairs and trying them out with her students, Amy’s school posted on Facebook about them.
“Sensory seating is used for students who may have difficulty processing information from their senses and from the world around them,” the school wrote.

“Tennis balls on the seat and backrest provide an alternative texture to improve sensory regulation.
“Students withautism spectrum disorder, Down syndrome, sensory processing disorder, etc. may benefit from this seating option.”
Though students have had different results, Amy has noticed many improvements in students of all different ages and special needs.

“First-grade students that have used the chair, they have become more patient and have followed directions,”Amy told theHuffington Post.
She also noticed that some of herolder students like the chairs as well.
After her school posted the picture on Facebook, it immediately blew up people everywhere loved the idea and couldn’t wait to try it.

Im really excited that this has taken off and Im really excited to see the benefits for students across the country, and educators and parents, Amysaid.
Want to know how to make one of these for your home or classroom? The school also provided simple instructions forthese DIY tennis ball chairs.

“Thank you for such the high interest in the tennis ball chairs,” the school wrote in theFacebook post.“It is exciting to hear that they could benefit students across the world!
“The materials used to make the chairs included: a chair, tennis balls, fabric, modge podge, paintbrush/paint sponge, and hot glue.
“First, take a chair and modge podge the seat and backrest and then place fabric over it.
Pixabay / nike159
“Next, modge podge over the fabric and wait for it to dry, which takes approximately 20-30 minutes. Then, hot glue tennis balls cut in half to the seat and backrest.
“When that dries, hot glue the excess fabric underneath the seat and behind the backrest to give it an ‘upholstered’ look.
“It may also be helpful to hot glue around the tennis balls one more time for an extra hold. And with that, the chairs are done. Happy creating!”
Would your child benefit from one of these tennis ball chairs?

Bit of a personal post
One of the problems I've had for some time now, since my breakdown in 2018 and made worse by the pandemic, is not being able to properly gauge the passage of time. A recurring theme in my Read More's is that I wake up and 3 months have passed and I've not done anything with them. It's one of the reasons I keep meaning to keep a diary, so I don't lose things in the fog and forget my life, but I can never commit to it. I have a lot of diaries in my house that are mostly blank.
However, I do have a lot of personal text posts that I've written over the years I've had this blog. Inspired by a post about being someone's oldest tumblr mutual, I decided to go through my tags and retag the posts that were like a diary to me.
Going through them has brought back memories, painful and joyful, reminded me of things I'd forgotten, but most of all it's given me a sense of lucidity I haven't had in a long time. I can start order events in my memory again, I understand again the years that have gone by.
Remembering some of the dark places I've been in and the regrets I've had has been a hard day but I also remember the good times I've had, on Tumblr and IRL and that's brought a wave of nostalgia and contentment. I don't deal with nostalgia well but it's been nice going through some of those old interactions with people.
It was sad to see all those usernames I knew and loved that are no longer online or who I never kept in contact with. I'm terrible with establishing and maintaining interactions like that, I wish I was a person who did talk to my mutuals and my followers more.
I'm a naturally awkward person, I always think that people wouldn't want me to talk to them but I'd like to break that shell again and have fun again. I'm also going to make a few more in depth posts every now and again to keep track of my life so in another 10 years I have something to look back at and remind me what I was like during this episode.
And if we have been mutuals for a while, say Hi. I'm terrible at responding but I always appreciate and cherish it

Britain is no longer on a descent towards fascism, it is a fascist country.
The government is openly and proudly committing human rights abuses and pledging to commit more and the state broadcaster is silencing anyone who even mildly criticises the government line
And our opposition? Our brave representatives in the Labour Party? They’re not only pathetically following the government, they’ve purged themselves of anyone with any human decency. They’re Franz von Papen
This country deserves to burn
