Here’s an incredible grave carved by Benjamin Collins. He was known for so called “shallow carving” in that he didn’t cut too deep into the stone. But what a work of art this grave is. Not only is the soul effigy very unique but there are eight pinwheel designs, meant to symbolize the gates of eternity. Also, what looks like the sun and the moon are seen below the soul and between the two pinwheels at the top of the stone. Benjamin Collins was the carver Zerubbabel’s father. This burial ground is an intense place to visit. If that is, you enjoy seeing strange folk-art on old gravestones from the 18th century.
