on moral equivalency

I've seen a lot of comments, most recently from one of the most well-intentioned people, listing hamas and hezbollah and the Israeli military all in one sentence as parts of the problem, and here is why that is not remotely okay or acceptable:

hamas and hezbollah are terrorist organizations that actively invaded civilians homes to torture, assault, murder, and abduct; who beheaded babies and paraded mutilated bodies through the streets and actively celebrate these atrocities.

the israeli military is the military of a sovereign country acting in what is a war situation, to counteract the threat of atrocities and war crimes being actively perpetrated by terrorist organizations, in order to restore safety to the citizenry.

and whether one is a pacifist who disagrees with the existence of militaries in general, or whether one disagrees with specific choices taken by the israeli military in particular, it is devastatingly misleading and unacceptable to phrase a sentence that makes it seem like accountability here is evenly divided between the israeli military, and the terrorists actively perpetrating AND CELEBRATING atrocities and war crimes against civilians.

and, with respect*, no matter anyone's perspective on the israeli government's attitude and actions toward palestinians, by no stretch of the imagination can those attitude and actions be described as war crimes, let alone gleeful celebration of war crimes.

there is a difference between "this is negative and i don't like it" and "these people are actively celebrating the mutilation of bodies, the torture of disabled, elderly, and children, the murder of hundreds including slaughtering an entire cohort of teens enjoying a concert as a holiday."

i respect not liking war and not liking militaries in general

but it's naive to be like "i don't like war and therefore the military that is responding in self-defense to the slaughter of hundreds of citizens and the wounding and abduction of hundreds more is also in the wrong."

there is doubtless nuance to every situation, but in this SPECIFIC case, statements that equate the two sides are misleading, insulting, and frankly dangerous inasmuch as they seem to offer some measure of justification to the actual war crimes being perpetrated and glorified on one side

all the things i alluded to are things that hamas has actually done, AND PUBLICIZED, in the past 72 hours.

right now, hundreds of people have literally been murdered in their homes by hamas, and hundreds of people have been literally dragged from their homes by hamas, assaulted, paraded through the streets, and abducted

including a good friend of my uncle, who is still missing.

i hope she returns home safely. i hope she is able to return to doing peace activist work.

but the israeli military ATTEMPTING TO ENSURE HER SAFE RETURN HOME is not part of the problem in this specific scenario.

in fact, when the IDF does operations to take out hamas targets, they actually notify the area through several methods in advance, and ask all civilians to go somewhere else where they will be safe.

whereas hamas has been known to store weapons in the basements of schools and to shoot rockets from hospitals, and to prevent civilians from leaving

*with respect to the very well-intentioned if naive person whose comment initially sparked me saying that; no respect at all to people who definitely know better and are still trying to frame this in moral equivalency terms on purpose

Hey Gentiles!

I think some of you really need to know what antisemitic language and Jew-hatred looks like online.

I've been seeing way too many people here on Tumblr (some of them people I used to follow) posting antisemitic, Nazi rhetoric celebrating and trying to justify the murders of Jewish civilians.

This Jew-hatred ONLY EMBOLDENS NAZIS AND WHITE SUPREMACISTS TO ATTACK JEWS. It does NOT help the Palestinian people.

Now, I am about to say some things that will be hard for you to hear, but I need you to listen.

Here's some of the Nazi rhetoric that I've been seeing on my dash:

When you say shit like this: "Most Israelis secretly support the Israeli government."

What you are REALLY saying is this: "ALL JEWS secretly support the Israeli government." (Just like this idiot accused Neil Gaiman of today.)

And you are emboldening Nazis, who think this: "All Jews are part of a secret international conspiracy to take over the world."

YOU ARE SUPPORTING NAZIS.

When you say shit like this: "What Hamas did was brutal but justified."

What you are REALLY saying is this: "What Hamas did was brutal but justified WHEN THEY TORTURED AND MURDERED JEWISH CIVILIANS."

And you are emboldening Nazis, who think this: "I think it is brutal but justified to torture and murder Jews."

YOU ARE SUPPORTING NAZIS.

When you you say shit like this: "Those Israelis got what they deserved."

What you are REALLY saying is this: "THOSE JEWS got what they deserved."

And you are emboldening Nazis, who think this: "I think we should kill the Jews. That's what they deserve."

YOU ARE SUPPORTING NAZIS.

When you say shit like this: "This is just what decolonization looks like."

What you are REALLY saying is this: "MURDERING JEWS is what decolonization looks like."

And you are emboldening Nazis, who think this: "I think that Jews in Israel, the US, and everywhere around the world need to be rounded up and exterminated."

YOU ARE SUPPORTING NAZIS.

I shouldn't have to fucking spell this out for some of you, but apparently you need to hear it:

The solution to this conflict is NOT mass murdering Jews! The solution to this conflict is NOT another Holocaust!

To make this even more crystal clear:

1. You are spewing Nazi ideology, and you are MAKING IT EASIER FOR NAZIS TO ATTACK JEWISH PEOPLE. Your words are putting Jews around the world in danger.

2. It should NOT be hard to condemn a group that spouts literal Nazi ideology, murders Jewish people, and wants to murder MORE Jewish people!

3. It doesn't fucking matter if it is Nazis or Hamas, antisemitism is antisemitism, and an attack on Jewish civilians is an attack on Jewish civilians. When you post Nazi rhetoric, all you are doing is emboldening Nazis and white supremacists, and making your Jewish followers feel afraid of you.

4. And if you cannot bring yourself to condemn Jew-hatred, you will have it on YOUR conscience the next time a Nazi attacks a synagogue and murders Jewish people. If you spread antisemitism, that blood will be on YOUR hands.

So...

If you are a gentile, and you see other gentiles repeating these kinds of white supremacist dogwhistles about Jewish people, here's how you can help:

1. MOST IMPORTANTLY: Help people direct their focus away from making antisemitic statements and harassing Jews, and towards helping Palestinians.

Actions that people can take right now are contributing to verified charities and relief organizations that help the people of Gaza. Some organizations that are verified by CharityNavigator.org and CharityWatch.org are:

Anera (92% rating on Charity Navigator)

Palestine Children's Relief Fund (97% rating on Charity Navigator)

Doctors Without Borders (98% rating on Charity Navigator)

2. Call that shit out. Tell people that they're being antisemitic, and explain that Jew-hatred is dangerous to Jewish people. Antisemitism gets Jews attacked and it gets Jews killed. In the US, many synagogues require round the clock security to protect against white supremacists who want to murder Jews. In Pittsburgh, my old home town, a group of Nazis from north of the city planned the murder of Jewish congregants at Tree of Life Synagogue, and so far only one of them (the gunman) has been arrested and convicted of the murders. The others are still at large.

3. Explain to them that it is antisemitic to celebrate someone's death *because* they're Jewish. ALSO, it is antisemitic to blame a random Jewish person for the actions of ANY government, whether that be the Israeli Government or the US Government.

4. Explain to people that they're not going to solve this conflict by posting antisemitic statements and memes online. All they will do is alienate the Jewish people in their lives and make those Jews feel scared and unsafe. And they will contribute to this current wave of antisemitism.

Once again: Antisemitic hatred doesn't help Palestinians. All it does is put Jewish people around the world in danger.

I’m just a Jewish girl on my hands and knees begging the world to stop fandomizing this war.

Acting like this war is just some child’s t.v show, this is incredibly nuanced topic with, bad and good people on both sides. Acting like this is some simple “good guy versus bad guy” war harms both Israelis and Palestinians.

Real people lives are at stake, this isn’t avatar or the hunger games, it’s not fictional characters at stake, it’s real life people, and you’re using them as tokens.

Not to mention this ideal harms diaspora Jews. To the world it gives them reason to be antisemitic, because it makes it look like the Jews are the villains here.

WHICH WE ARE NOT!

The anger is gone

I’ve felt so much anger recently. These past few months, that’s just how I’ve been living.

Not at Palestinians fleeing for their lives and who have suffered unimaginably. I want the war to end, desperately. But my fury lingered- at Hamas. At each person who celebrated, denied, and/or excused it October 7th and beyond. At the people who I loved who see my community as an acceptable target for righteousness. At the rampant rise of jew-hatred.

It only got worse when I played with the children in our community. Every Friday night, I’d be the one who would entertain them at our rabbi’s house, with makeshift puppets, drawing whatever prompt given, and making up stories for whatever they wanted. And every time they’d laugh, I’d feel a stab in my heart-

How could anyone want to kill us? How could anyone want to hurt us? And the children? What have they done besides babble out hebrew words ?

It worsened whenever I held a newborn in my arms and listened to the very Jewish name his parents gave him or her.

When I had to wonder about that same babies- "Will they be safe in the world we have now ? In the world they'll grow up in, that we have in part created? Will they get to be old men and women? When will they learn of evil- in their superhero cartoons or when their preschool gets a bomb threat?"

I grit my teeth when peers protested hostage shabbat tables, or talked loudly at coffee shops where they wished for the death of "Zionists", uncritically rehashing nazi talking points. It's a unique kind of hopelessness, to see fellow young and hopeful students- the world changers- lend themselves so easily to hate. I learned to contend with it, but I will never regain that hope I had before. Or rather, the one hope I had that the people of today are fundamentally different than the ones of the past. Where in fact, the same vile ugliness remains in the form of infographics on Instagram and in the hearts of English literature majors.

And now, I sit here in early January still in grieving of the world I thought I knew that had been ripped up to pieces. And the anger has puttered out into a sadness I think I'll always carry. I cannot trust the activist, the academic, or my generation. I can only speak out, but not too harshly and in acceptable terms. But most of all, I have started my Jewish journey with the knowledge that my destined to be adoptive family are incredibly in need of protection.

But most of all, what I know I can do, is keep showing up to shabbat dinners and speaking in high squeaky voices for the puppets. I can make the kids laugh. And for now, that'll be my superpower.

There is nothing to say, or rather there is far too much to say and I cannot find the words to say any of it.

But I will say, briefly, because there is a possibility this may actually be a useful reminder for someone: if you have Jewish friends — or others who may be being affected by what is happening in Israel — please consider reaching out and checking in to see how they're doing.

It can feel awkward, I know. I am, myself, The Worst at reaching out. Sometimes you don't know what to say. (Literally something as simple as "Just wanted to check in to see how you're doing" can mean a lot.) Or you don't want to bring uo upsetting topics. (We're already upset, I assure you, it won't be your fault.) Or you don't want to pressure them to correspond at a time when they're already potentially overwhelmed. (That's a very thoughtful concern... and you can tell them exactly that.)

Please reach out anyway. Let the people in your life know that you're there, that you care, that you are if nothing else aware.

Because it's hard, when your world has been shaken, and your loved ones are in danger or in mourning, and the people all around you are apparently living in a completely different world where nothing at all has happened.
