Hiii I’m back to bother you all again with technical difficulties. Long story short, if I have diagnosed the problem properly, I need a new Apple Pencil! And if I’m wrong I’ll need to replace both my pencil and the iPad itself!! But (and I am sure this will surprise no one that’s read this far) - I have no money 🥲

This isn’t quite a 100% necessary expense. I still have a handful of job applications sent out that are still waiting on replies, and hopefully I’ll have some more income sooner rather than later - but since comms and art have been one of my main sources of income this year, this is gonna be a decent problem for a little bit 😅 in the meantime I’m going to reach into the void and boost some stuff and offer additional ways that maybe I can earn some money for the month!

Recently I got into my dream art school, which is thousands of miles away from me, I'm experimenting with having multiple online income streams to help me pay for everything. I'm interested in seeing how this may look for different people in hopes of gaining some new perspectives & ideas.

So, do you make most of your income from social media? If so, what does that look like for you? And how do you balance school, work, and a social life?

Thank you for asking! I was on a similar track a few years ago when I enrolled. My personal relationship between monetization and art is strenuous at best and I usually relegate it to a passive form of income. all the art I have sold have been physical goods , which were only reformatted to be prints. and weren't really drawn with the intention for being sold. I've never opened a comms sheet but do concessional ko-fi's , kind of low commitment/intensity things. so passively selling prints.stickers etc through 3rd party is most of my income ,since being a full-time animation student hasn't allowed for a lot of part time work. I also occassionally stream and post sketchbooks,comics and zine's on itch.io , which have been the most fulfilling to me. There is no mandatory paywall or anything and everything I share is donation based... That's the super tricky part about the work life balance for me. School mandates a lot of personal sacrifice, your going to be making a lot things , not necessarily on your own terms. So separating the monetization from the art making process itself has been the most sustainable thing for me in terms of burnout / time management . lool that was kinda long winded and little all over the place. But i am someone that prioritizes creative agency, but please do what ever works for you and allows you to live comfortably! :) ganbatte <3

My Family and I Are Facing Eviction:

(I posted about this on Insta, and I've decided to crosspost here. Read below the cut for info on the situation)

TLDR: we are being evicted after just a 1 year and 7 months in our new apartment and exhausted our resources during our last move. So, support of any kind is endlessly appreciated. I'm keeping my commissions open (link in bio along with my Ko-Fi), but the wait time is N/A. My close friend and I will be hosting a Rise themed Kickstarter as another option for those who want to support and get something in return for their kindness.

As a low income household, it hits hard. Government aid has kept us afloat as my mom and I attended college full time. It was especially important when our lifestyle had to adapt to my little sister's Mitochondrial disorder diagnosis (it's serious, lifelong and deserves a Google search), and my mother's autoimmune diseases.

We need the aid until my mom settles into a job post graduation and we sort out whether I can be registered as a home aid for my sister. (I went on break from college to help my mom after an invasive shoulder surgery she had in Feb. Financial, college and family health issues are why I’ve extended it.)

Unfortunately, setting up a Crowdfund isn't easy for us. I've researched and it can’t be tied to a bank account in our household. Thankfully, my friend @Mimunaii has offered to help, but because I’d feel wrong not giving back somehow, the Crowdfund will be a Kickstarter. (Regular donations also don’t seem against aid rules).

Reaching out like this on social media is a last resort as I've struggled to find any other options to help with this very serious and stressful situation. Just sharing this post is enough, and no donation is too small for us to be grateful for as we try to save and keep up with bills/costs our aid doesn’t cover. My whole life has been an ongoing catastrophe lately and I feel like i am really helpless. My dad's wife has brain damage/ is in the hospital and he's got low mobility and a roach infested house. They live like an eight hour drive away and we have no money so I'm having to take money from my transphobic brother to stay in a hotel, and I have four days there to try to solve like six months of problems without the resources to do so.

We're already in debt and i am deeply aware of just how much time I have to try to turn things around for myself, too. I need to find a new online job I can actually do but the rest of everything has been so overwhelming I haven't really had time or brains pace to do it.

Also I have been trying to get a dentist appointment at a place that will bill medi-cal because I ground my teeth so hard I cracked a molar.

(If several ppl weren't depending on me I think I'd just go crawl into a bog and never return)

A little update 3/16:

We're heading up to my dad's tomorrow and the new plan is to try to get him to come back down with us. He doesn't seem like he can live on his own. And until we can figure out how to get him help here it's just gonna be me and my mom taking care of him.

(The good news is I went to a different dentist and I guess the first one straight up lied to me and all I did was chip a tooth in the back. I'll need a filling but that's not as bad as I thought)

Donations/ comms/ shop purchases still definitely needed! If we CAN convince him to come with us, It'd be nice if we could get a bed or something here so I don't have to start sleeping on an air mattress

happy day after christmas, my mom's hours got slashed at work down to two days a week because, you know, nobody wants to pay anyone to work anymore. 🙃 i have no means to get a Real Job(TM), i'm disabled without benefits, because you practically have to be missing your head to be considered disabled in the USA. our rent AND our energy bills are going up in january. it was a bad holiday season for etsy sellers. i wanted to open comms, but i'm in a huge pain flare this month and i don't know when i'll be able to take on that kind of thing again.

Ah, hey guys. I got some requests to open up more commission slots, but most folk who requested them haven't come back for them. I work two jobs atm, and most of my day is spent taking care of my disabled mom and sister, who really is more like my daughter atp. Bc most of my work is at night, I usually just eat leftovers, bc I've been boycotting most fast food, and a lot of philippine Canteens are just overpriced / closed at night. I'm trying to save up for a microwave (I already replaced our gas stove from past comms!) So I keep opening these hehe. Anyway.
