Buzzfeed Unsolved: The Suspicious Crash of Stanley Pines
The theme for @stanuary week 3 is Crime... what about... TRUE CRIME? I started watching Buzzfeed Unsolved this last summer, so I’ve been wanting to do something like this.
If you don’t watch Buzzfeed Unsolved, this is probably gonna seem like a lot of rambling.
On the morning of July Fourth, 1982 in the sleepy logging town of Gravity Falls, Oregon, there was a firey explosion that wasn't part of the fireworks and festivities. A car had gone over the edge of the town's famed floating cliffs.
"Floating cliffs?" Shane asked
"They're like, giant overhangs. They're not just floating up in the middle of the air like Pandora or something." Ryan explained, showing Shane a photo on his phone.
"Oh, that's pretty."
"It is really pretty."
"What a beautiful place for a car to careen over a cliff."
Ryan cracked up.
"You get a lovely view as you plummet to your death." Shane imagined.
Between 6:15 and 6:20 PM, the Gravity Falls Police Department received six separate calls reporting seeing a yellow car in flames drive off the edge of the cliff and crash to the valley below.
When investigators arrived on the scene, they found the remains of a crushed and burnt 1971 Subaru DL Coupe. The police report notes finding that the brakes were cut, and evidence of gasoline being poured into the driver’s seat to start the fire. Strangest of all, no body was found in or around the crash, only a few burnt strands of hair.
“So, right off the bat, real suspicious.” Shane commented.
“Yeah, and it only gets more suspicious from here.” Ryan assured his co-host.
“And I’m assuming there’s no chance that they guy, y’know, got up and walked away from the crash?”
“Oh, no, no way. You saw the picture of the cliffs.”
“Oh yeah, no way.”
“There’s no way anyone in the car would have survived that fall.”
“And it was on fire.”
“And it was on fire.”
Despite the lack of a body, the police determined from the few burnt strands of hair and an anonymous tip they received at 6:15 PM on the day of the crash, the driver of the car was one Stanley Pines, a 31 year old man from Glass Shard Beach, New Jersey. Allegedly, he had been coming to Gravity Falls, Oregon to visit his twin brother, Stanford, who lived just a ten minute drive from the cliff Stan’s car had driven off.
“Wait, wait, wait--” Shane interrupted Ryan’s explanation, “Twin brothers. Named Stanley and Stanford.”
“Yeah.”
“Who the f___ names their kids like that?”
“I know, right?”
“Were they identical twins?”
“Uh, I couldn’t find anything saying they were definitely genetically identical, but, uh, with the way this case goes, it’s safe to assume they were identical enough.”
“Yikes, I feel sorry for them growing up, can you imagine how often people got them mixed up?”
“Yeah, but imagine the kinds of shenanigans they must have gotten up to!”
“Oh, that’s true. There would have been plenty of shenanigans. Lots and lots of shenanigans.”
“If you had twins, would you give them cutesy twin names?” Ryan asked.
“No.” Shane answered firmly.
“I think I’d just do like, alliterative names. Nothing too similar.”
“Yeah, no I think twins probably have to deal with enough confusion bull___ without having to throw similar names or the same initials into the mix.”
“Interestingly enough…” Ryan started.
“Yeah, I’m guessing from your comments that the twin thing plays into this.”
When interviewed by the police, Stanford claimed his brother never arrived at his house. However, testimonies of other townsfolk reported seeing a red 1967 El Diablo with a distinctive “STNLYMBL” vanity license plate driving up the road to Stanford’s house earlier that winter. The house is out in the woods, isolated from the rest of the town, so no one would drive up that way unless they were going to see the cabin.
“Well what if they just wanted to take a walk out in the woods?” Shane countered.
“It was in early February.”
“Snowshoeing.”
“In a blizzard.”
“Ok, you do not have a weather report for the exact day they saw this car!”
“Two of the testimonies mention there was a snow storm that day. Plus, the license plate says STANLEY MOBILE.”
“Well, Stanley is a fairly common name.”
“You-you’re just being contrary to bug me now, aren’t you?” Ryan accused.
Shane just grinned.
What’s more, that same red El Diablo was the car Stanford now drove.
“What!?” Shane laughed with disbelief for a moment before putting on a mocking tone. “Uh, yeah, he never showed up, but, uh, I have his car. I’m still driving it. Y’know, seemed like a waste to just let it sit in the driveway.”
“He didn’t even change the license plate.” Ryan added.
“Oh, of course not!” Shane said sarcastically. “Why go through all that trouble?”
Upon further inspection, the car that crashed was registered to Stanford, and had been reported totaled almost seven years prior.
“It’s interesting that they say it was totaled.” Ryan commented. “Because totalled just means that the damage is more expensive to fix than the car is worth, so it could have still been drivable.”
“And if you’re trying to fake a car crash, what better to use than an already worthless car?” Shane agreed.
“Exactly.”
Stanley Pines was declared dead by auto accident and the case was closed in September of 1982, due to lack of evidence and quote: “A lack of interest from the involved parties”.
“A lack of interest from the involved parties!? What the h___ does that even mean?” Shane asked in bewilderment.
“It’s odd, to be sure.”
It’s when we look into the background of the presumed dead Stanley, and his brother Stanford, that this case becomes truly bizarre.
Stanley Pines left home at the age of 17, and had brief but unsuccessful careers as an amature prize fighter and as a salesman, before he turned to a life of crime. Prior to his reported death, he had been in prison five times, in three different countries, and had lived under at least eight different assumed names, with several others that were never confirmed. He had known ties to the mob and drug cartels.
“Quite the shady character. That might explain why the police didn’t look too closely into his ‘death’.” Shane put air quotes around “death”.
“Well, does it? I mean, if they thought his death might have been related to the mob…” Ryan argued.
“They know better than to mess with the mob, even in Oregon.”
“I mean, we have seen in several past True Crime episodes, what can happen if you mess with the mob.”
“Oh yeah.”
“You don’t wanna do it.”
“Nope.”
His brother Stanford was no less strange. He was born with fully-functional polydactyly, meaning he had six fingers on each hand. It’s worth noting that after 1982, Stanford no longer had 6 fingers. He claims that he had them surgically removed, because, quote: “I was sick of people staring.”
“Uh-huh. Sure.” Shane said doubtfully.
“You don’t believe that explanation?”
“Let’s just say I find it highly suspect.”
Stanford was also a certified genius, graduating with the most PhDs Backupsmore University had ever awarded. As a graduate student, he worked as a researcher and inventor for the US Government. Some sources say he worked on top-secret experiments.
In 1975, he received a $100,000 research grant, which he used to move to Gravity Falls and become a Paranormal Researcher. When he arrived in Gravity Falls, he was the subject of many rumors throughout the town, due to his reclusive nature and strange area of study.
“Oh, so this guy was basically you.” Shane pointed out.
“He’s basically me if I didn’t have you.” Ryan agreed.
“Awww, that’s sweet!” Shane placed a hand over his heart.
Many residents reported seeing strange lights coming from Stanford’s home in the woods starting almost as soon as he moved in, as well as strange sounds.
“Well, it seems like Gravity Falls is a pretty small town. People gossip.” Shane reasoned.
“Ok, yeah, but people gossip about who’s cheating on who, or what business secretly sells drugs out the back. They don’t gossip about strange lights coming out of the new neighbor’s basement.”
“They could. It’s gossip. Gossip can be about anything.”
Reports of the lights stopped in late January of 1982. Just four months later, in March, Stanford began opening up his home for tours, and in a matter of weeks, transformed his home into a tourist stop called the “Murder Hut.”
“Oh my g__.” Shane stifled a laugh. “A little on the nose there, don’t you think?”
“He did rename it to the Mystery Shack about a year later.”
“Hmm, yeah I wonder why?” Shane asked facetiously.
Stanford also exhibited paranoid behavior on several occasions before the crash, especially in the early months of 1982.
One local reported seeing Stanford screaming “No it isn’t, you creeps! I can see you just fine!” down an alleyway. Several other eyewitnesses reported seeing him fall out of his seat at the Triple Digits Truck Stop Diner on Route 14 and scream for something to “get out of his mind” before fleeing the building.
“So, he definitely seemed to think something was out to get him.” Ryan commented.
“Not the words of a sane man.”
“Unless something really was out to get him.”
“Eeeeh, even then…” Shane wiggled his hand in a so-so motion.
Dan Corduroy, one of the few people who had regular contact with Stanford before he opened the Mystery Shack, had this to say about the sudden change from research lab to tourist trap:
“Oh, he’s definitely been acting differently. He was really shy before, hard to talk to even. He seemed uncomfortable spending a lot of time with people. I’d invite him over to one of my family’s cabins to visit, but he only ever wanted to visit the haunted one while we were all out of town. I’d say it was a good change, though. It wasn’t good for him to be alone all the time like that. I’m glad he’s finally spending time with other people.”
“He only wanted to visit our haunted cabin.” Shane repeated with disbelief. “Hey, do you wanna come over to visit one of our cabins?” He put on a voice. “Uh, that depends, what kind of cabins have you got?’ ‘Well there’s one by the lake, one with a nice view of the valley, and one that’s haunted.’ ‘Oh, I’ll take the haunted one!”
“What gets me is he only wanted to visit the haunted cabin while everyone else was out of town. We’ve stayed in our fair share of haunted places, and it was bad enough staying overnight, just me and you, but there is nothing that could convince me to spend the night in one of those places all by myself.”
“I mean, I’m pretty sure none of the places we’ve been to have actually been haunted, but I see what you mean. It’s not fun to go to a haunted house by yourself. It’s kinda boring.”
“Um, we’re not gonna get into this discussion now, because we still haven’t even gotten to the theories yet, but you’re wrong.”
The case came to light again in August of 2012, when Federal agents arrested Stanford Pines, and detained him for several hours for questioning. By the next day, he had been released, and officials stated that his arrest had been due to a false lead. What exactly that false lead was, however, was never stated.
Now that we’ve gone over the extensive background of this case, let’s get into the theories of what really happened that 4th of July in 1982.
Theory #1: The theory put forth by the police, that Stanley Pines died in a fiery car accident.
“So then how do they explain what happened to the body?” Shane asked.
“It doesn’t say.” Ryan.
“And why were the breaks cut?”
“No explanation given.”
“That’s a stupid theory, those cops ought to be fired.”
Ryan stifled a laugh. “You’re not wrong.”
Theory #2: That Stanley killed his brother, made it look like his own death, and took over his brother’s life. This would explain the loss of his extra fingers, the sudden change in behavior that led him to open up the Mystery Shack, and his sudden acquisition of Stanley’s car. It does not, however, explain the lack of a body in the crash.
“He could have disposed of his brother’s body somewhere else, and then just like, left an ice block on the gas pedal and let the car run itself off the cliff.” Shane theorized.
“That’s possible. I was also thinking, maybe the body was gone. Maybe Stanley didn’t necessarily kill Stanford, maybe they met up in the woods, Stanford got eaten by a bear, and Stanley, who was already in trouble with the mob, took advantage of the situation, and faked his own death.”
“How--why did you work your fear of bears into this?”
“That’s just my variation on this theory.”
“Then why all the secrecy? Why not say that he was the one who got eaten by the bear? Why fake the car crash and then say his brother never showed up?”
“Because if the mob knew he’d talked to his brother before he died, maybe they’d come question him?”
“Oh, yeah, that’s a possibility.”
Theory #3: That Stanford killed Stanley and made it look like an accident. People who support this theory say the psychological trauma and guilt of killing his own brother may have driven Stanford to change his appearance and behavior to more closely resemble that of his dead brother.
“That’s… kind of a stretch.” Shane said slowly. “I feel like, Occam's Razor, theory 2 is more plausible.”
“What makes you say that one’s more plausible?”
“I dunno, just saying ‘He killed his brother and took his place’ seems a lot more likely than ‘The other brother killed him and the guilt drove him to act like his brother. I don’t think that’s how psychology works.”
Theory #4: Both brothers are still alive. Stanley, on the run from the mob, came to his brother Stanford for help. Meanwhile, Stanford was worried about someone or something that was out to get him. They came to a solution that would solve both their problems: switching places. They would fake Stanley’s death, throwing the mob off of Stanley’s trail. Then, Stanley would take Stanford’s place in the public eye, while Stanford went into hiding.
This theory is supported by photos that surfaced on Facebook in 2012. Several photos of Gravity Falls after a series of earthquakes did extensive damage to the town show what is supposed to be Stanford. However, another man that looks just like him is seen standing in the background. Interestingly enough, both mens’ hands are obscured in all of these photos.
While the photos haven’t been analysed by any professionals to definitively determine if either of the men are Stanley Pines, it has been determined that the photos are not edited.
“Would the whole photo recognition software even work on identical twins?” Ryan wondered.
“I don’t think so?” Shane answered unsurely. “I mean, my Facebook facial recognition auto-tag doesn’t even recognize my mom half the time, so I wouldn’t be surprised if twins throw it off.”
“Just looking at some of these photos yourself, what do you think?” Ryan handed a few print-outs from his folder to Shane.
“Oh wow, yeah, they do look alike.” Shane nodded. “Alright, yeah, I’m convinced. We solved it, guys! Video over!”
“We actually do have one more theory.” Ryan informed him.
Theory #5: Stanford was abducted by aliens.
“Oh for f___’s sake--” Shane threw his hands up in frustration. “We have four perfectly good, plausible explanations, and you have to throw that in!”
“This one actually does have some evidence behind it.”
“Bull____, but go on.”
Stanford was a professional paranormal researcher. Although he was very secretive about his research, even to his grant committee, some of his research notes do list looking for proof of ancient aliens visiting the valley before European contact. Could it be the thing he was afraid of was aliens?
“... That’s it?” Shane asked. “When you said this one actually had some evidence behind it, I thought you meant there was a UFO sighting in the same area around the same time.”
“The negative space between the floating cliffs kinda looks like a UFO” Ryan pointed out.
“Yeah, but that doesn’t mean a random researcher in the 80’s was abducted by aliens! That’s like, if I found a ransom note for you in the office, but I said ‘Well, Ryan was afraid of bears. Bears used to live in California, there’s one on the state flag outside our building. He must have been eaten by a bear.’ That’s the kind of leap in logic we’re talking about!”
Was this a case of fratricide? Or is this the longest and most elaborate twin switch of all time? For now, this case remains… UNSOLVED.
 * * *
“It was really hard for me to stay on topic while I was researching this one.” Ryan admitted as they wrapped things up. “There is a lot of weird stuff related to Gravity Falls, we should go there for an episode one of these days.”
“I’d love to do that, it looks like a beautiful place to visit.” Shane agreed. “Are you sure you wanna do that though? It seems like the place is crawling with haunted cabins and bears.”
“Well, one could argue this entire series is about me conquering my fears, so… Why not?”

Billy woke up really early due to light streaming into his room. The sun was coming up. He couldn’t bring himself to close the curtains the previous night - after all, the view was the big thing in this hotel, wasn’t it? He rearranged his pillows so that he could still lie in bed but also tipped his head up enough so he could see the view.
It was too early to go along to her room yet, so he’d laze a little, shower and then he’d go. He hoped that her anger had cooled overnight, as the two of them really had to have a conversation. Not that he was looking forward to that conversation, but he realised that if he wanted to have even an outside chance of getting her back, he had to man up and tell her the truth. He had the distinct feeling that If he only told her part of it - a sanitised version of what had happened - she’d see right through him and that would be that.
He laughed out loud.... god he hadn’t even slept with the woman, but if he’d known the shitstorm that was going to be stirred up by all of this, maybe he should’ve just damn well done it!

Meanwhile, you sat at the departure gate waiting for the boarding call. You’d always wanted to visit your next destination so while you were sad to leave Barcelona, you felt excited to be on your way.
With a little smile, you thought that the only real regret you had was you wouldn’t be there to see the expression on Billy’s face when he realised you’d skipped town again.
»»————————————-———- ⚜ ———————————-————-««
As soon as he’d had that thought a little voice inside his head had said, if you had then you’d never ever get her back and you know it. Yeah, he did know it. So it was just as well I didn’t, he acknowledged to himself. Some no-strings sex with Madani wasn’t worth wrecking what he’d had with her.
Now he just had to hope that he wasn’t already too late to salvage that.
Billy stepped out onto the 20th floor landing then began walking up the red corridor to her room. He spotted a cleaning cart in the corridor - wait, that wasn’t outside her room, was it? No, it couldn’t be. But he felt a sinking feeling in his stomach the nearer he got.
He came to a halt next to the cart, and looked at the room number on the door for confirmation but he knew it before he even saw it.
She’d run out on him again.
Billy cursed loudly then swung round on his heel and headed back to the lifts. He took his phone out as he walked, hitting a starred number. It rang for a while then a grouchy voice said, “Yeah, what?”
“Micro? Got another job for you.”
»»————————————-———- ⚜ ———————————-————-««
After clearing Customs and Passport Control you walked briskly out of the terminal building, following a sign indicating where you needed to go. You were getting more and more impatient to get to the city by the minute, but you knew you had to make sure you picked the correct coloured route, as they went to different destinations.
Standing on the jetty at Marco Polo Airport, you waited patiently along with other passengers for the Alilaguna airport boat to moor alongside it and which would then take you to Venice.
La Serenissima. The city which floats on a lagoon.
»»————————————-———- ⚜ ———————————-————-««
Frank listened to what Micro had to say, then exploded. “Oh for fuck’s sake!!! This is gettin’ out of control. Yeah okay, do his search then let me know - not him - what you find out.”
He ended the call and threw his phone onto the bedside table. He’d have to speak to Bill, this was too much.
»»————————————-———- ⚜ ———————————-————-««
Billy was in a temper. He threw his clothes and toiletries into his duffel bag and zipped it up viciously. Nothing from Micro yet and he had to check out of his room now. He’d just have to sit in the bar/lounge downstairs and have a drink or two until he did hear back.
An hour and two whiskies later (yes, he’d thought as the barman’s eyebrows raised up at his request, it is damn early for a whisky but you have no idea what I’m going through), Billy was getting more and more impatient. Then his phone buzzed, but hope sank like a stone when he saw it was Frank.
“I guess he called you, then?” Billy said as soon as he answered the call. “Yep,” said Frank, “...he did. And this is the last one, Bill, you hear me?” “It’s not my fault she keeps flyin’ off t’different places!” whined Billy. “It’s your damn fault she took off in the first place, dumbass!” growled Frank and Billy said nothing as he couldn’t argue with that.
“Where’s she gone, Frankie?” he asked after a short silence. “Venice.” “Ah shit!!! Back to the States? Didn’t see that coming.” “Not Venice Beach, Bill... Venice, Italy.”
»»————————————-———- ⚜ ———————————-————-««
You settled yourself onto the wooden bench inside the vaporetto which would take you on the short hop across the wide Giudecca Canal from Palanca to Zattere. Vaporetti were the Venetian equivalent of public transport but a hugely more pleasurable experience. What would you rather hop on - a bus or a ferry? Yeah, definitely a ferry! You’d decided to stay on Giudecca instead of the main islands as it had a calmer, more relaxed vibe and tourists were much less in evidence.
Karen had texted you as you were getting unpacked in your small but cute room. Your hotel was surrounded by residential gardens and a narrow canal on one side; when you went out onto the large balcony, all you could hear was birdsong and the church bells of Venice. It was heavenly.
But Karen’s text had brought you down somewhat; Billy was on your track again. He’d been told by Frank that they weren’t going to help him out any longer, but you weren’t convinced that would put him off. Billy was the most stubborn sonuvabitch you’d ever met. Looking out the vaporetto windows, you saw a majestic tall ship making its way imperiously up the canal followed by a small tug like a lady in waiting, and wondered where it was sailing off to.
Sighing, you gathered up your bag as the vaporetto docked at Zattere and prepared to disembark. Maybe it was time to just sit down and have ‘that talk’ with him.
»»————————————-———- ⚜ ———————————-————-««
Billy, meanwhile, was waiting impatiently for his flight to start boarding in Barcelona airport. He just had to pin her down this time. No more escaping him and the talk they had to have.
He marvelled at the fact that in Europe, you were never really that far from your next destination. Here he was in Spain and in less than two hours’ time, he’d be in Italy. He’d bought a travel guide to Venice in one of the airport stores and settled down to read it.
Frank had given him the name and location of her hotel, somewhere called Giudecca. He didn’t have the first fucking clue as to where that was, so he’d better find out and quickly. Okay…. here was a map. Venice seemed to be divided into six sestiere or areas… hmmm no mention of Giudecca. Oh right, here it was, a large island out on its own across the Giudecca Canal from Venice.
He pinpointed the hotel on the map and felt a lot more relaxed.
I know where you are now, kitten.
»»————————————-———- ⚜ ———————————-————-««
Escaping from the crowd of tourists in Piazza San Marco into the relative peace of Caffé Florian, you sat down and ordered a horribly expensive cappuccino and pastry from the impassive waiter. But it was worth it just to soak up the historical atmosphere. You looked round the opulently decorated and gilded interior and opened up your guide book; it had opened in 1720 and scores of famous faces had passed through its doors or listened to its musicians outside. Wow - Casanova, Lord Byron, Charles Dickens, Ernest Hemingway, Charlie Chaplin, Clark Gable, Andy Warhol. The list went on and on.
Coffee finished, you wandered out of Florian’s and back along the Piazetta next to the Doge’s Palace. There was an arched bridge - the Ponte della Paglia - on the waterfront from which you could see the world-famous Bridge of Sighs, and you joined the huddle of tourists at the top of the bridge to eventually make it to the front and take a picture of it. Your guide book told you the bridge was so called because after their trials, condemned prisoners would be taken from the Doge’s Palace over the small canal at its side to the prison, and their last sight of Venice would be from the bridge. Hence the ‘sighs’.
Next, you walked along to the Arsenale, the huge historical shipyard where Venice had built her vast number of ships which had enabled her to have a huge trading empire. It had been said that they’d been able to construct a fully equipped warship in one day. But that was long in the past, you thought as you looked at an array of stone lion statues outside its main entrance and a bust of Dante set onto the wall.
Turning away, you headed to the vaporetto stop of the same name and waited for the Line 1 vaporetto to arrive and take you on a sail up the Grand Canal.
»»————————————-———- ⚜ ———————————-————-««
Yet again, Billy was in a bad mood. After a couple of false starts, he’d eventually managed to make his way onto the correct Alilaguna boat at Marco Polo and had alighted at Zitelle on Giudecca.
But now here he was - walking backwards and forwards, backwards and forwards - along the waterfront, trying to find out where this damn fucking hotel was. He just couldn’t find it! Where the hell was it?
Billy spotted a guy around his own age walking towards him and stepped in front of him, asking politely in English if he could help him find this hotel. A stream of Italian burst forth and the guy must’ve realised that Billy didn’t understand one word, as he then took his arm and pulled him along the waterfront a little. He stopped and gestured towards one of the narrowest damn alleyways Billy had ever seen, quite near the vaporetto stop.
He thanked the guy effusively and set off up the alleyway. There were peoples’ houses on each side of it and he tried not to be too nosy as he walked past them. But echoing within the walls of the alley he could hear voices, children’s laughter, a football match on a TV, a dog barking… talk about living on top of each other. He wasn’t sure he could live like that but then it just depended on what you were used to, he supposed.
Arriving in a small open area leading to a canal and a bridge over it - Corte Ferrando, he saw on a sign - he found the Giudecca Hotel right on the corner next to the canal. At last!!!
Walking in to the small but light and airy reception area, he dumped his bag next to reception and asked the guy behind the desk if he could book a room. “Certainly, signore, how many nights would that be for?” Billy shrugged, saying, “I’ll make it for two nights for now, but maybe I’ll need to extend that, I’m not sure.” “That is no problem. Can I have your passport please, signore?”
Billy handed it over, thinking as he did, going by her recent history it might be only the one night!
»»————————————-———- ⚜ ———————————-————-««
You stepped off the vaporetto at Rialto. Well, you just had to walk over the famous bridge and be a total tourist didn’t you, stopping to take a picture looking back down the Grand Canal. You’d gazed at all the big palazzi lining the waterway as the vaporetto zig-zagged its way between all the stops on the canal. They were certainly impressive, but they also had a faded, melancholic air about them.
Some of them had been converted into museums, some rented out on long or short-term leases by their owners, or they were now owned by foreigners who only stayed in them for a handful of weeks each year. When the festivals were taking place… Carnevale, the Biennale, the Film Festival. The rest of the year they lay empty and lonely, no doubt steeped in dreams of the lavish masked balls and elegant dinner parties from centuries past, while the noble Venetian families who used to own them lived in modern condos in Mestre on the mainland, no longer in their beloved Venezia. How sad, you thought.
Heading back to the vaporetto stop, you decided you’d go to Accademia, have a look round the art gallery, visit the huge and famous church Santa Maria della Salute and then wander round the artisan shops in Dorsoduro, perhaps have a glass of vino in one of the cute little wine bars.
You were determined to make this afternoon and evening last for as long as you could. Billy would no doubt be waiting for you when you got back to Giudecca.
»»————————————-———- ⚜ ———————————-————-««
The man himself hadn’t even bothered unpacking this time, just in case. He’d had a quick shower and then had taken a short stroll around the local area. He noticed very few tourists and decided this was why she’d chosen it. He knew she’d prefer to sample the local life more than the tourist traps.
Not wanting to spend too much time away from the hotel, he made his way back and sat outside on the lone park bench in the courtyard area. He started running over in his mind what he was going to say to her, to be honest he still wasn’t sure how to frame it so that she wouldn’t go ballistic.
His stomach knotted. Who was he kidding? Of course she was going to go ballistic! He was about to admit he’d made out on more than one occasion with another woman. And irrespective of the fact that it had been strictly business from his point of view, his girl was not going to be the least bit impressed with him.
Fuck, I’ve really screwed this up, he allowed himself to think for the first time. He’d made his brain block out this uncomfortable thought what with all the chasing after her in the previous few days. He’d been telling himself over and over that everything would all be alright.
But now he thought… would it? Would it really?
»»————————————-———- ⚜ ———————————-————-««
Returning on the vaporetto to Palanca, you felt yourself starting to tense up. You knew Billy would either have arrived by now or would very shortly.
Whatever he had to say to to you, you knew you weren’t going to like it. The evidence was too strong that he’d been cheating on you and you weren’t going to let him off the hook for that. The problem was, you loved the stupid douchebag. But how could you trust him now, after he’d been seeing another woman? In some ways, it was worse that it was just the one. And you were sure it was just one, if the perfume evidence was anything to go by. It would almost have been better if he’d gone back to his old tom-catting ways, quantity over quality to coin Frank’s phrase. Your stomach twisted as you remembered him saying to you that at last Billy had reversed that equation when he got with you. But if he was seeing just the one? That was bad.
You began walking up the alleyway and as you reached the open area, you saw a figure sitting on the park bench, the back of a dark head. Billy.
Squaring your shoulders and feeling as if you were about to go into battle, you walked steadily towards him.

hey lovely!! im planning a trip to seoul next year + I know that you've been, so i just wanted to ask for your recommendations?? wheres the best place to stay area wise, places to visit, good food restaurants/cafes, how best to get around (im guessing subway)?? 💞
hello! how exciting omg. in terms of area, i don’t have any specific recommendations since i tend to stay in airbnbs when abroad and i’ve been in various different areas while in seoul. i think as long as u can find somewhere that’s ~fairly~ central and at a good price, then you’re golden! tbh it doesn’t really matter too much if you’re a little further out too bc the subway system is a dream and makes travelling around v easy (which answers your final question). you’ll just need a t-money card (which is like an oyster card/metro card for the subway that you load up with money and use to tap in/tap out at stations) and you can travel anywhere with ease!! the only thing to note is that trains stop running at night fairly early - i think it’s around/before midnight, so if you’re planning on staying out late then you’ll need to get a taxi.
here’s a few of my fave restaurants 🍚
카타코토카페 (the cuuutest japanese curry restaurant. it’s run by a couple and they’re lovely and super friendly!!)
신선설농탕 in myeongdong - i am v biased as a oxtail soup supremacist but this is honestly one of my fave places ever and i make it a tradition to come here every time i’m in seoul lmao IT’S JUST SO TASTY. tip: they’re always suuuper busy at breakfast and lunchtime so try to come before/after. also, there’s a rice porridge restaurant above this place on the 3rd floor (i think?) that is DELICIOUSSSS
광장시장 - the beeeest traditional food market. there are so many quality food stalls here and u can get a really, really top tier meal for super reasonable prices. note: they don’t accept card, so make sure u have cash on u before u go
maple tree house in itaewon - on the pricey side but god damn is their kbbq worth it (yes. the answer is yes)
명동교자 - also another fave that i visit whenever i go!! their knife cut noodles are,,,,, incredible,,, and their dumplings are just so mind blowingly good just go and allow me to live vicariously through you please
나물먹는곰 - super cute restaurant that’s hidden away in hongdae. they have great traditional food
and some of my fave cafes ☕️
c.through cafe - check out their instagram for all you need to know about this place lmao
sulbing - this is a bingsu chain that you can find in multiple places!! their bingsu is so so good. i recommend the 인절미 bingsu and also there’s this one honeydew melon one they have with ice cream inside and it’s!! just!! amazing!! idk what it’s called but it’s super tasty YOU NEED TO TRY IT
cafe onion - the prettiest cafe!! they have two branches and both are lovely
not in seoul but honourable mention because it’s my fave cafe ever: waveon cafe in busan is,,,, life changing
as for places to visit, that rly depends on ur interests! i recommend visiting the palaces for sure and also the hanok village (but do be wary it’s a residential area so they understandably don’t like tourists lingering on their doorsteps for photos. there’s also quite a few cool tea houses in the area, i recommend you to check them out!!) n.seoul tower is also a must see - try going in the evening around sunset bc by the time you get up to the tower, it’ll be dark and that’s when the view is most impressive. the hike up there is also pretty nice if you’re prepared (i was NOT when i went and i nearly died lmfao but i digress). other places of interest:
한남동 has a lot of cool cafes!! it’s like a new, trendy up and coming area with a lot of nice eateries
홍대 is a lot of fun, especially in the evening bc lots of buskers perform there!! also there’s lots of boutiques with cute clothes!! it’s my fave area to explore because it’s just so lively
if skincare is your thing, you’ll like 명동. there’s also a lot of street food in the area in the evening
not area specific, but you need to try out coin karaoke at least once before you leave. it’s so so fun
동대문역사문화공원 is suuuper cool. there’s lots of really great artist stores inside the plaza
other general suggestions/advice
if you’re looking for good places to eat at and you’re in a jam, use mangoplate. it’s a super useful app for finding 맛집
kakaomaps may work better than google maps in seoul
please be careful of using public toilets bc there’s a huge problem in korea re: tiny cameras filming unsuspecting women. i don’t want to scare you, but i just want to give you a heads up as something to be wary of so you can protect yourself!!
you may want to get a sim card at the airport so you can use data. there’s wifi everywhere so you don’t have to get one, but i got one for my 2 week trip and it came in super handy countless times
things you should try before you leave: goobne chicken (get the red pepper one. i kid you not it changed my life), picnic by han river (you can order food to be delivered to you there!!), the convenience store kimbap (it’s SO good wtf), 떡볶이 (there’s a really good restaurant for it in hongdae that i can’t remember the name of but it’s really close to the gs25 store near one of the subway exits)/street food in general
not sure if you’re aware already, but you don’t need to tip in korea! also, you pay by the door before you leave so no need to wait at the table
i think that’s everything i can think of from the top of my head!! hopefully that helps. ik it’s a while off still but i hope you have the best time on your trip 🌷✨
EDIT: I AM A CLOWN i forgot to mention 교보문구??!??!? it’s a massive bookstore that has allllll the books you could ever want, including visual novels!! they also have stationery and cds and things, 10/10 recommend

6 Most Amazing Places You Can Visit In Bali
Bali – Indonesia’s Paradise!
Bali is not just a place but definitely a state of mind – It is the most beautiful island of Indonesia that will conjure amazing thoughts of the tropical forests surrounded by blue waters, instilling a spiritual feeling in your soul and a perfect balance of the mind with the body. There are thousands of tourists who visit Bali every year to enjoy the serenity that is offered by the turquoise water and palm trees. For the native people of Bali, their religion is one of the most important things and an integral part of their lives. The religious aspect of the native people of Bali, the entire island would impart a spiritual feeling all around.
Well, it’s not surprising to know that the main religion of the native Balinese is Hindu dharma which also blends other beliefs such a Javanese, and Buddhism.
Having visited Bali several times, the mystic locations have inspired me to share some of the best places that you can explore and enjoy with not just your romantic partner but also with your friends and family.  Bali, according to the tourists, is considered the most evocative as well as most popular destination of the vast Indonesian archipelago. As soon as you will step into the mesmerizing land of Bali, you would feel a spark in your mind-body, and soul. It will make you feel intoxicated and away from the hustle-bustle of city life, routine work, and stressful life.
The capital of Bali – Denpasar, is the most fascinating place that includes white-sand beaches and amazing hinterlands. The people who are looking forward to surfing in Bali, contemplate the place as Macca and love to spend their entire trip exploring different beaches and surfing.
I have listed some of the best places that you can explore when you are in Bali!
#1 The Place That Is Topping The List – Pura Tanah Lot:
Pura Tanah Lot is a religious place that is approximately 20 to 22 km from Kuta and lies in the northwest direction. Pura Tanah Lot is considered the most iconic temple or spiritual location of Bali. The Pura Tahna Lot is surrounded by spectacular sea and stunning rocks where the waves hit the rock and create a captivating panorama.
Tumblr media
The Pura Tanah Lot is considered one of the most sacred temples on the island. There are numerous solo travelers, families on tours, traveling friends, and other tourists who love to visit the Pura Tanah Lot temple mostly during the evening and view the beautiful sunset.
Tourists find their way to the temple from various places such as Legian or Sanur or even Kuta. Along the way, just like other tourists, you can find several souvenir sellers where you can buy some really amazing things for memories.
If you want to go deep into the history of the Pura Tanah Lot temple then it was built in the 16th century. The inspiration for the temple was embraced by the priest Nirartha. The temple was built by the local fishermen who lived near the shore of the sea.
Being a foreigner (tourists), you won’t be allowed to enter the temple because it is the belief of the native people that the temple will lose its sanctity if outsiders enter it. But don’t be disheartened, you would be able to enjoy the view of the temple and experience peace by taking a walk around the temple, taking photos, and completely soaking yourself in the beauty of the place.
Once you have viewed all the temples and various sacred shrines on the island, you can have a relaxing time at the cliff-top cafe – Kopi Luwak. It is quite popular among tourists because of the tasty meals, beverages, and friendly ambiance.
TOP TIP: The backdrop of the restaurant and cafe offers you Instagram-worthy photo ops which you can instantly click and upload on your Instagram account.
Traveler Tip: While visiting the temples and shrines in Bali, make sure you are dressed respectfully – respecting the decorum of the place, such as wearing a sarong and sash.
#2 Enjoy The Scenic Beauty Of Mount Batur: Mount Batur
Trekking in Bali sounds really amazing, isn’t it? But do you the exact location where trekking would not just be an adventurous activity but also fun? – Mount Batur!
You, along with your group can trek up to the highest peak of Mount Batur that is almost 1700 to 1800 meters above the ground. Trekking on Mount Batur will give you a thrill that you would never get to experience anywhere else in the world. Besides, the view of Bali from the top of Mount Batur will be just stunning. If not trekking, you can experience the beautiful sunrise as well as the sunset behind the tall, wide lush green mountains.
Tumblr media
Mount Batur is actually an active volcano and is situated in the central highlands of Bali, in the Kintamani district.  It is considered a sacred place by the native Bali people and even you would feel the piousness of the place. Hiking or trekking on Mount Batur is always on the top ‘to-do’ list of tourists. The trekking path or the trail is well marked so that the people traveling through do go get lost or confused while coming back. To make the trek more interesting, these trekking guides will provide you breakfast of delicious eff, bread, and hot beverages that are cooked directly from the steam of the volcano.
Besides Mount Batur, you would get to witness the beauty of the lake Batur which is also considered as the one and only source of irrigation in the entire region. The view of lake Batur from the top is completely stunning and mesmerizing.
Travel Tip: If you have already planned for trekking on Mount Batur, you would have to ensure that you are using high-quality trekking shoes and have proper warm clothes as the temperature in the morning time would be extremely low.
You can get a perfect pair of trekking shoes from either Amazon or Flipkart. Just have a look.
Along the trail of Mount Batur, you can also visit the famous temple of Pura Ulun Danu Batur. This temple is situated in the northwest direction of lake Batur. Surrounding the temple, you would get to experience a therapeutic soak or a hot bath in the hot springs.
#3 Temple – Pura Ulun Danu Bratan
If you want to witness the beauty of the picturesque temple of Bali, then visit a small island that lies on the western shore of Lake Bratan. It is located in the cool breeze highlands of central Bali. The temple was built in the 17th-century and it is among the top places to visit when you are in Bali. The temple is having an amazing scenic beauty because of the backdrop offered by the Gunung Bratan. The temple is having a thatched appearance which is reflected in the waters of the lake and makes the entire location mesmerizing. During the air pressure and breeze, the water level of the lake rises and at that time, the temple seems to float on the surface of the lake.
Tumblr media
The lake is very important to the native people living there because it is the best source of drinking water and even for irrigation the water from the lake is used. An entire temple is a sacred place of the Devi Danu. The people of Bali consider her the goddess of water and due to her, everyone is getting clean drinking water.
Beside the temple complex, you could see the statue of Budhha exactly on the left side of the temple – sitting in the meditation position over a lotus structure. The status of the Buddha explains that the people of Bali have completely adopted the beliefs of Lord Buddha and follow them religiously.
To view the best beauty of this Bali temple, you must visit the place in the morning. The resign run spreads the soft sunlight and the cool mist in the air will mesmerize you. The tourists who are interested in visiting the temple from inside can hire a canoe and paddle out on the lake.
The Botanical Garden Of Bali!
The Bali Botanical Garden: If you have visited the temple Pura Ulun Danu Bratan, you can move ahead to visit the Botanical Garden of Bali. The Botanical Garden of Bali is also known as the Kebun Raya Bali. Here you can observe the bamboo forest, begonias, orchid collection, and medicinal or herbal plants. Alongside the Botanical Garden Of Bali, you will be able to go to Bali’s Treetop Adventure Park – it would be a great place not just for the kids but also for the adults. There are multiple ziplines or Tarzan swings for adventurous activities and also a perfectly designed suspension bridge.
To Get The Exact Address Of The Place – Jalan Bedugul – Singaraja, Candikuning, Baturiti, Kabupaten Tabanan.
#4 Experience The Serenity Of The Nusa Beach: If you want to escape from all the sightseeing trips and tours of Bali and spend some quality time with your family or friends, then you can visit the Nusa Dua Beach. Just imagine, you are having the glass of your cool drink in your hands, reading a book, relaxing on the recline sun lounger, and experiencing the soothing feeling of the white sand. Isn’t it all enthralling? Well, it is certainly! You can visit the private peninsula of Bali and choose anyone from the luxurious resorts to feel the pristine sand of Bali and the cool breeze.
The staff of the resort is extremely proactive and they make sure that the resorts are not polluting the place in any way. Even they are taking special care of the white care and keep it clean. There are many things that you can perform on Nusa Dua Beach –  swimming, surfing, parasailing, and sunbathing.
Traveler Tip: You might have to make some payment for hiring the sun lounger or eating or doing the activities at the beach.
The tourists can also enjoy the luxurious spa services available near Nusa Dua Beach – it will help you to relax and have a great experience.
#5 Having A Fun Bath With Your Family/Friends In Sekumpul Waterfall
The Sekumpul Waterfall is just another beautiful place offered by Bali and it is located in the Singaraja region. It is situated almost 66 to 70 kilometers from the Ubud. Many tourists have listed Sekumpul Waterfall as one of the most beautiful falls of Bali. This specific waterfall is a combination or blend of 7 different waterfalls which gives a perfect cascading effect. The entire area is surrounded by mist generated due to water and carried along to the jungle-clad cliff.
Travel Trip: Note that if you choose to drive yourself here, locals might try and stop you well before the entrance, demanding exorbitant entrance and parking fees. It’s a good idea to hire a local guide who knows how to negotiate these roadblocks and access the correct trailhead to the falls.
#6 Understanding The Culture And People Of Bali: Most often the tourists are visiting Bali to know the different cultures that are being religiously followed or to mark the difference between the traditions of the people of Bali and that of the other countries that are Buddha followers. For that, you would have to visit the villages and understand the terrace farming they have adopted for rice fields, attend their cultural programs, and know how the people are dressing in Bali. It would be completely refreshing to meet new people, and spend some quality time with them.
It would be better if you take a visit to Sideman Valley. This valley is situated in the northeast of the Ubud and will give you the feeling of the old Bali where the villagers reside and have a happy living. The village is full of rice fields that are perfectly shaped into terrace farming. While you are strolling through the village, you would get to know the routine of the villagers and how they are spending their day. Besides, you will be learning more about the scenic beauty of the village valley that has a big Mount Agung as the backdrop. Most often the tourists come to spend time with the villager or go on a hiking trip and sometimes follow the summit of Mount Agung and some for the Yoga retreats.
If You Are Planning Your Next Vacation To Bali – Then You Can Visit All The Places Aforementioned. Our Next Blogs Would Be On The Best Bali Beaches Where You Can Have A Relaxing Time And A Luxurious Stay In Famous Resorts.

Previous chapter ;
“I’ve been received some unknown messages in the last few days.” Harry showed his phone to his lawyer, “And I’m sure its Dale. Who else if not him? He’s the one who currently starting a war with me. The messages always come from different numbers. I didn’t delete them. Every time I tried to call, it would pass through voice mail or the number is no longer active.”
14. OLD MEMORIES
“Is this the restaurant that they mean? We didn't get the wrong address, right?”
Brenda murmured, “Of course not, honey. They said a french restaurant in The Dorchester. And this is the only french in here.”
Calvin and Brenda, Y/N's parents, were in London to visit their daughter. Before they return to Swansea tomorrow, Harry invited them to a dinner at a fancy restaurant in Mayfair. It would be the first time they meet – especially for Calvin, and maybe get to know each other more closely. For the past three days they had stayed at Y/N's apartment, Harry didn't have the chance to meet them since he was busy with work.
“This looks so expensive,” Calvin murmured, his eyes looked around. The restaurant interior was dominated by silver and golden colour creating a rich impression. The glimmering dangling chandelier and crystal caught his attention, with the strains of the melodious violin, everything was lavish.
The waiters looked professionally with their uniform, back and forth serving their guests, making sure everything was served perfectly. The delicious aroma of food was very tempting, made them almost drool. Everything looked perfect. No wonder this restaurant collected Michelin stars.
“I know.” Brenda smiled, “Don't worry, I'm sure they will pay the bills if that's what you're worried about.”
“We can also have a nice lunch or dinner here but you won't get any gift for your birthday.”
Brenda just rolled her eyes, before pulling her husband's wrist looking for a private section. Since the couple told her their table was separated from the public one, Brenda had a little trouble to find them. Fortunately, a staff came approached them politely and offered help to escort them to the private area.
Harry was the first one who noticed their arrival. He rose from his chair to greet them first, and politely accepted a hug from his girlfriend's mother, before shaking Calvin's hand afterwards. Y/N introduced them all then let Harry pulled the chairs for both of her parents.
“You look handsome as always, Harry.” Brenda winked, “It's nice to meet you again.”
Harry smiled softly, “Thank you. I was ecstatic when I heard you and Mr Y/L/N would come to visit Y/N.”
“Calvin took his leave for a few days and I told him why we don't visit Y/N? And maybe visit her brother too. So, here we are.” Brenda waved her hand playfully, “This place is amazing, anyway.”
In the beginning, Calvin didn't talk much. He let his wife talk with his daughter's boyfriend. Meanwhile, Y/N was rather anxious because Calvin was pretty hard to start a conversation if people didn't know him well. Just like when she brought Elliott, her previous boyfriend, home and introduced them both.
It was obvious for everyone that Harry was charming and easy to talk to. And that was he used. Slowly but careful, he started having a conversation with Calvin. Looking for topics that could keep them in talk. Capturing a mother's heart was an easy task for him, but when it came to a father, he must be careful.
The conversation kept going until the waiters came to bring their dinner. From that time he knew the bond between his girlfriend and her parents was very strong and they had a healthy relationship. It's nice to see the parents were so supportive of their children. Harry was a little jealous for a slight moment because they both were so lovingly towards his lover, unlike him who was hated by his own biological father. But, he was grateful because that was the way it made him now. He wouldn't know if he would meet his Y/N if he wasn't a Styles.
While enjoying the food, Harry and her parents were more engaging in the conversation since Y/N allowed them to get to know Harry better. She knew her mother love him already, but it was a bit difficult when coming from her father.
She was quite surprised. Because in the end, her father seemed impressed with Harry.  She could tell from the first her father had a conversation with him. She didn't know why but Calvin always gave a hard impression when meeting his children's lovers and wasn't easy to impress him. And Harry was the first who could make him soft in one meeting. Not because he treated them in an expensive restaurant, her father wasn't that kind of person. She admitted Harry had the charisma and this charm that people easily melted with.
“I remember Brenda said that you're more handsome than me when I was young. And she never shut her mouth close for that.” Calvin said after sipping his wine, “And I can see, why.”
“You're embarrassing me.” Brenda laughed, “But, it's true! If you want to visit us someday, Harry. I'll show you a photo of him when he was a teenager!”
“I would love to.” Harry smiled, “I ber they’re lovely.”
“Swansea may not be as fancy as London but you'll love it. Trust me.” Calvin nodded, “Have you ever been to Wales before?”
“I've been there a couples time for business.” Harry answered, “Next time I'll try to visit as a tourist.”
Y/N couldn't remember the last time she had a long conversation with her parents. She loved the way Harry kept the conversation going among them. Being the person who easily started the talk, made her parents – especially Calvin, engaging effortlessly. They called it a day when she realised it was getting late and her parents had to leave early in the morning. Being the gentlemen he was, Harry offered a ride for them. There was no way he could take Y/N home while her parents left alone.
It was half the ride when Calvin had been watching Y/N sitting in the passenger seat next to Harry who was driving. Maybe the two of them forgot her parents were in the back and they were in their own conversation. Neither Calvin nor Brenda spoke, leaving the young couple preoccupied with themselves. Chuckles and giggles were here and there when Y/N played with Harry's free hand, spinning his rings there or tried to peeling Harry's coated nails. Calvin didn't even aware Harry was wearing nail polish during the dinner.
“They're so cute,” Brenda leaned in – whispering to her husband's ear, “I remember when we were young, so in love.”
“Do you think so?” he mumbled. His eyes sometimes looking in their direction. When Harry had just released his hand from the gear, Y/N had pulled them back to her. He could hear Harry saying what are you doing while wiggling his hand.
“Of course, they are! You can see from the way they're looking at each other.” She scoffed, “Your daughter has grown up.”
Despite he hated to admit it, Calvin could see it all clearly. When they were staring at each other, he saw the spark between them that was hard to explain, but he knew what it was. He was so preoccupied with his own thoughts that he didn't realise they had arrived in front of her daughter's apartment building.
“You guys can go in first. I want to talk with Harry for a bit.” Y/N said with head turning back to look at her parents. Both of Brenda and Calvin nodded, not forget to thank Harry before getting out of the car.
“Thank you for dinner. I could say that my parents really enjoyed it.” She continued after they were alone, “Connor texted me that he hated me because I didn't invite him tonight.”
Harry cackled, “Maybe one day we should treat him a nice lunch or dinner. I've never met him, anyway.”
“Sure. Or maybe we can surprise him by coming to his birthday. He always had a party with his friends.” Y/N frowned, “Usually in the club or he threw a small party at his apartment like a frat night. But, I never came because it was really a frat party.”
“Sounds fun,” he frowned, “I’m being curious.”
There was a pregnant pause before Harry grabbed her small hands to him, he didn't know what she wanted to talk about because at this time both of them didn't say anything.
His hands played with her dainty fingers, comparing their palms together. He laughed over how her hands were so small to his big one. His fingers pinching every tip of her fingers, his thumb running up and down her knuckles up and down.
“Didn't you say earlier you want to talk to me?” he hummed, “Why are your hands so small?”
Y/N rolled her eyes, “Because you're a giant. And no, I don't really want to talk about something. I just want to enjoy some time with you.”
“Ooh, my girlfriend misses me huh?” he teased, hands still playing with hers. “I'm always here, darling.”
“Yes, I do. Come here, give me a hug!”
Harry grinned before taking his girlfriend to his embrace, wrapping her body with his arms. He didn't know why Y/N had become clingy like this, yet he wasn't lying if he liked it.
“You're so warm,” she snuggled deeper into his neck, “and soft.”
“And you're so small.”
“Because you're a gigantic, H.” She snorted, “You're tall like a giraffe and big like an elephant.”
“Heyy!” he whined, “But, I'm your giraffe.”
Y/N chuckled while her hand gently scratched his ears softly, “Hmm, definitely.”
“Don't squeeze my earlobe!” he warned, his nose stuck to the top of her head, inhaling the remaining fragrance of her shampoo. One that he liked when being close to her was to smell her hair albeit it had been hours since she washed it; still smelt good like she just washed. Not to forget to say her hair and neck were his favourites spot to smell.
“Your hair is getting long.” She spoke while tucking his curls behind his ear, “It's very fluffy.”
“Should I get a haircut?”
Harry felt she was shaking her head, frowning when he didn't catch what Y/N was talking about because she talked in his neck. He could feel her lips move against his skin.
“Louder baby, I can't hear you when you muffled your voice in my neck.”
“It's your hair so it's your choice.” She shrugged, “But, don't trim your curls. I love it against my skin, so soft.”
“I know. You love a little hair touching you down there.”
“Harry!” she swatted his shoulder, detached her body from his. She snorted knowing Harry was holding back his laughter.
“I'm joking, baby.”
“Whatever,” she sighed, “Well, I should get inside before my parents get suspicious. I have to get up early tomorrow to take them to the Paddington.”
“Okay then. Good night, darling.” “Good night, H.”
Both of them leaned into sharing a quick kiss on the lips before Y/N climbed out of the car. Waving to her, Harry watched her get inside before turning the steering wheel to his penthouse. . . . .
It had been two weeks since his lawyer taking care of the unknown messages, and Harry still received the messages every day. Of course, he was pissed why his lawyer couldn't take care of it quickly. The reduction in clients also made his emotions unstable. If in the morning he was so sweet and nice, later in the afternoon he would change drastically. Even the directors were also being his aim if they reported something unpleasant to him. In the end, it was Y/N who tried to intercede for them.
“I'm sorry Maxwell.” Y/N smiled apologetically after one of their directors was scolded by Harry. The man just smiled understandably before excusing himself. She rolled her eyes while closing the door, and turned to face Harry who was staring at her.
She shook her head with her arms folded, “You can't just scold people like that. He did nothing wrong.”
Harry straightened his body, his head tilted to the side while his fingers interlocked on the desk. “I don't like what he just said earlier.”
“Still,” she shook her head, “This world isn't always whatever you like, Marcel.”
“Who?”
“Marcel. You're Marcel.”
Harry arched his eyebrow, “I don't know what you're talking about, darling.”
Y/N stepped closer and slowly pulled the vacant chair in front of Harry's desk. She ventured herself to look into the eyes that had been staring at her. The darker eyes which she didn't recognise, but she had to. She didn't find Harry there. Just someone she didn’t knew, was borrowing her boyfriend’s place and act up at will.
“Don't lie to me.” She deadpanned, “I can recognise you, Marcel.”
She had recognised him since Harry began to raise his tone and speaking much faster. At that moment, she was also aware that the eyes weren't bright like usual. From that moment, she knew that Marcel who was with her.
Harry, or Marcel smiled widely before shaking his head, hands clapping for her. He looked at the woman in front of him while leaning his back against the chair, “No wonder why Harry likes you. You're not easy to be fooled.”
“Well then, smart lady. Now, I'm here. What do you want?” he continued.
“Can you be more civil? No need to scold people if there are a few things you don't like. You make Harry look bad in the eyes of others.”
“But that makes him respected by people, right?” he frowned, his dark eyes stared straight to her. He grinned when Y/N didn't answer him.
“I know you both can't be separated. Does Harry ever bother you? So, please help him.” She sighed, “You can be angry with the right person. But, don't do that to innocent people.”
“Maybe Harry doesn't tell you, darling. But, I'm here to help him become a tougher person. He can't just give up. He can't.. and I won't let him being underestimated by everyone. I won't let people do that to me. You should know that.” Marcel scoffed, “It's enough for us to have a bad past. It's time for the future to bow to me.”
“I understand your feelings, Marcel.” Y/N whispered, “But, please... It won't end if you still like this.”
She flinched when Marcel hit the desk, made it shaking until some books fell. Y/N cursed herself for saying such things like that, and now her guts shrank. Carefully, she peeked at Marcel’s face. The man looked even more furious, his expression was so different. For a second, she couldn’t believe this man was Harry, yet it was the truth.
“Don't dare to talk if you don't know anything, Y/N.” He growled, “You're lucky you have Harry to protect you, if not, you're the one who I'll throw with a book to.”
Her shoulder slumped as she exhaled. With unsteady steps, she left Marcel who was still sitting on in his chair without saying any words. Her steps stopped when she opened the door. She looked back – staring at Marcel from her shoulder.
“Don't forget to take the medicine, Harry.” . . . .
Y/N began to worry because Marcel became more frequent. She had tried to talk with Harry, but it seemed that his emotions were all over the place making it difficult for him to balance himself. There had been small progress regarding the messages although Harry or Marcel was annoyed because the process wasn't fast as he wanted.
Now, seeing Harry bickering all day wasn't strange to her and the employees. They knew their clients were dropping like flies while Y/N  tried to keep Harry from yelling to all employees.
“What is he doing right now?!” he growled while staring at the few people in front of him with a distressed look. Harry was infuriated, but he kept his composure so Marcel wouldn't switch place with him right now. He couldn't let people see Marcel took over his place right in front of their eyes, enough for him to let Marcel use his body to release his anger.
Y/N who sat on his right side could only pinch her temple while shaking her head; exhausted with several cases that hit Erskine and Harry. Later that afternoon, she was told that both Harry's and Erskine's lawyers, would come to the office because there was new news surfaced, and the outcome would be far more critical.
“It’s not about Dale,”  Allen slowly shifting his iPad for Harry to look over the screen, “You won't like this, Harry. This just spread wide this morning. And some online news sites already contained the article.”
Flexing his jaw, his ringed finger taking the iPad unsurely. Exchanging the look with his lawyer, Harry began to look at the screen. First, he didn’t quite understand what was going to unfold before him. After a few seconds, his eyes widened, forehead frowning deeply. Meanwhile, Y/N kept watching Harry's expression while he saw something that she could say; terrible. His face turned pale with lips slightly parted. He quickly pushed back the iPad not long after, both his hands rubbing his face in wroth. He took a deep breath while biting his lips, he wanted to explode right now but he couldn't. Deep down inside his heart, he was trying to calm himself down if he didn't want Marcel yell at them.
“Who spread the video?”
“The Sun, BuzzFeed, and DailyMail so far.”
“Sue them.” Harry ordered after one of Erskine's legal team spoke, “Sue whoever spreads the video, no matter who. And find the woman in the video.”
Y/N furrowed her eyebrows when she heard the word woman came out from his mouth. What happened? What video was that?
“I'll call you later.” He said when both his lawyer and Erskine's said nothing. Both Mr Jones and Mr Darmot who were the legal team of Erskine nodded before excusing themselves. He promised them to send email regarding that matter.
“Is there any progress upon your investigation about the messages?”
“Your assumption is right, Harry. Dale Jespersen indeed is the culprit. We have gathered the evidence and will immediately report this to the police.” Allen answered, “But, he didn't do that alone.”
Harry scoffed, “Of course, he did. I also won't be surprised if he did that with an insider.”
“All right. I'll file the documents tomorrow and I'll tell you afterwards. But, I'm sure he will pay the fines instead of having to make this case running long.”
“Right then, I'll text you later regarding the video.”
Harry let out a huff of air after Allen leaving his office. His head tilted back with eyes looking at the ceiling, his thumb and index finger pinching his nose bridge. If he had aware, Y/N paid attention to every his gestures. She didn't know who was there. He looked calmer and had a balance to control his emotions.
“May I ask you something?”
He lowered his head, didn't aware that his girlfriend had been there the whole time. She made no sound during the meeting making him forget about her presence. Before he answered, he looked at her carefully. He read her facial expression; she looked confused yet curious.
“Why are you being formal like that?”
“Because I don't know who you are.”
Harry chuckled at that, “I'm Harry. Your Harry.”
She squinted her eyes, before pushing her chair closer to Harry. Now, only the two of them in the meeting room that had almost all the walls were glass. She must be careful if anyone passed by. Y/N grabbed his face with her palms, look closer at his face.
“Yes, you're H.” she hummed and let go of his face.
“I'm sorry if Marcel was too often here. I was mad and weak at the same time so he took the opportunity.” He shrugged, “So, what do you want to ask?”
“About what we talked earlier,” she started, “What video were you talking about? You were pale when you saw the video. But, I'm weird seeing you look calmer.”
“I don't know, honestly. I was furious, yes. But, there was a feeling I should try to be calmer. Maybe because I've rested a lot, so I could be stronger to defend myself from Marcel.”
She didn't want to go further than that, who knows Marcel will appear if she kept asking for him. This was quite surprising because it wasn't Marcel there, but Harry. Harry was the one who growled, not Marcel. She was glad, at least he could balance his temper earlier and not let his shadow be there. This was a good step for him, of course.
“You haven't answered my first question, H.” asked her, “What's wrong with the video?”
“Harry?” she demanded when he said nothing. Y/N was getting suspicious that there was something he didn't want to say. She might not ask, yet from the way he reacted earlier, it was something serious.
“I actually don't want to talk about this to you. Yet, I'm sure when you exit this room, you'll know the answer from the internet. And I don't want you to know from others.” He emitted a rough breath, reluctant to talk about this since it was a disgrace of his past.
“Is that.. That bad?”
“Very.”
“Should I be worry?”
“Of course.”
She frowned. What did happen? Was the situation getting worse?
“Allen and the Erskine's legal team came with a video that's now widely spread in the public. If you heard, some online media had to post the video and articles about that. The video happened a long time ago when I was in university for my bachelor's degree.” He sighed, “I don't know what to say at this moment. I'm ashamed and don't know what to do.”
Y/N thought with the worst possibility. What students would do when they were in university and chose to record it? Doing drugs? Made a racist comment? Insulting the government?
“Well, the video is a sex tape of me and my girlfriend at that moment. I think it was in our second year.”
“Pardon?” she frowned deeply when hearing his explanation. She didn't expect that kind of answer to come out from his mouth. A sex tape? Really?
“I know, I know it's bad.” He winced, “The video itself is bad, I admit. But, it's not like the videos in PornHub I swear.”
She was speechless – didn't know how to react. Her brain was thinking hard right now. Her eyes now shifted to the table in front of her, yet the stare was blank. She respired hardly while leaning her back against the leather chair. A sex tape should be personal documentation if they chose to record it, not be a public consumption. But who was spreading it out? Harry couldn't possibly keep that and he wouldn't be that careless. Could it be his ex-girlfriend?
Hold on.
This would be a new problem not only for Harry, but for Erskine too. She couldn’t understand the few problems that he faced now. All started from his arrest some time ago. She hadn’t realised that she had been in reverie too long when Harry called her name several times.
“May I see the video?” her hoarse voice filled with uncertainty. She wanted to see the video but she doubted if she could bear to see it. She wasn’t sure of the request she had just said. Her mind was confused and bothered by the fact that her boyfriend once recorded his sexual activity. In all sudden, she remembered Victoria’s word.
The woman was right. He did record his intercourse with a former girlfriend, yet she didn’t know if he always used to do that. She couldn’t jump into conclusion yet, and she couldn’t prevent what had happened in the past. In his past.
“I don’t have them on me but I can ask Allen to send me right now.” He murmured, “But, are you sure? I can’t even let my eyes to watch them twice.”
Y/N knew his worries. He didn’t want that thing to ruin their relationship – again. Enough for her with Marcel, he didn’t want to drag her to his past problems. But, this was the consequences. If you’ve been dating someone, you would definitely also get into their past. Like it or not.
“I have to see it so I can anticipate the impact that will come, H. The public will know and so with the clients since it has published with some media. At least we have to plan something to overcome it.” She halted, “I won’t judge you, H. I’m not blaming you and your past over the sex tape, which I regret why your ex-girlfriend could be so careless to let it leak to the public.”
“Why do you believe she was the one who leaks it?”
“I just think one of you both kept it and I believe you’re not the one. It could be her, or maybe she shared the video with someone else. I don’t know.”
“And you’re accusing her.”
“Excuse me, Harry?” she stared him in disbelieve. Harry just pointed her of accusing his ex-girlfriend when she didn’t. She just talked about possibilities. She trusted Harry more than anyone. She only remembered the words of Victoria who began to eat her trust.
“First of all, I’m not accusing your ex-girlfriend. And the second, I don’t want to argue with you and make you angry so that Marcel who I’ll face – nope.” Y/N stressed her words, “Just let me watch your sex tape so I know what to do.”
“Because, H. I’m exhausted of Marcel so I want him not to take over your body again at this critical moment.”
Harry didn’t say anything, he just immediately called Allen to send the video. When they received the record, she asked him to watch it together even though Harry quickly refused in the beginning, He felt extremely embarrassed by his behaviour at the time. The tape was five minutes long and it was intense. Harry didn’t show his genital but the woman's bare chest was everywhere. Yes, their entire body wasn’t exposed but it still made her uncomfortable. They seemed to enjoy it very much and no doubt or worry was shown when the recording was made. She could clearly identify Harry right away and the lady was pretty. Y/N felt she had seen the woman somewhere but she couldn't put a finger on it. He was rocking the woman so hard made the headboard banging loudly against the wall. Their naked top was on display but the duvet covered them from his waist until down. They were so loud made she could feel their intensity. It all made sense when Allen muted the sound when Harry watched it because their moans were quite embarrassing. She shoved his mobile phone away when the tape reached its end.
“I don't know what to say.” She shook her head, “Delete that shit right away. We don’t know if someone can hack your phone and make it look like you own that.”
“I’m sorry if you feel uncomfortable. I promise to work it out.” He pledged, “But please don’t think another way on me. I’m already exhausted of all this shit and I want you by my side to support me.”
Harry was scared if she would leave him. Hell, he even worried if she would change the way she looked at him. He was reckless and naughty back in his younger year. He was just like any other teenager who liked to try new things but he hadn’t thought the consequences would go this far. He didn’t expect the sex tape would be a backfire for him.
“That shit is disgusting, I can’t lie.” She squinted her eyes, “It was your past that can’t be changed, H. What we can do is stop the video’s spreading and think of you, and Erskine. I just have this feeling in my guts tomorrow we’ll have some phone calls from the clients.” She paused, then looking at him with inexplicable gaze, “I’m sorry if I sound selfish – always talking about the company. But, that what we must do as soon as possible so all the possibilities that will maybe happen can be prevented. I want us to figure it out together instead of having a screaming Marcel.”
“I understand.” He sighed, “I know Marcel wouldn’t help for any situation like this. All he would do is yelling and blaming everyone.”
She nodded, “Okay then. What should I do?”
For a little awhile, Harry didn’t utter a word. Many things were spinning in his head right now. His soul and mind were torn apart, and it made him uncomfortable. He couldn’t stop thinking about everything. In the silence, he glanced a little at Y/N, seeing his lover seemed busy with her own daydream. Her face looked gloomy and burdened, the twinkle in her eyes dimmed. Harry was sad, it was all caused by him.
When Harry cursed his folly, Y/N was thinking. After all of this, then what would happen?
She won’t lie, she would be reminded of the tape every time she saw Harry albeit it was only a faint memory. She didn’t sure, would this make them stronger? Or?
Her boyfriend had a lot of unexpected things, and Y/N didn’t know if she’d always going to be up for it.
All she knew, her heart would always open to all the flaws that Harry had.
No matter what.
She hoped. . . Please excuse some errors Talk to me :)

At night it can get quiet cool up there and you may need a jacket. It’s also a nice place for a date, if you planning on doing something romantic in Cebu.
There are a few stalls up there selling snack foods and drinks. On the way up to Tops there are a number of restaurants (Lantaw, La Tegola and Mr A) you can stop at and have a nice meal with beautiful views of Cebu City. If you plan to stop at one of these restaurants on your way to Tops Lookout or back you will need to organise this into the taxi price as the drivers will want more money to do this. You can also check out Mountain View a nice park area.

It is perfected by slow-roasting a pig over a charcoal pit.The native pigs used are stuffed with lemongrass, tomato, vinegar, and a mixture of local herbs and spices. You can find Lechon anywhere in the Philippines. However, Cebu's Lechon is recognized nationwide as the best. Cebu's Lechon is famous for its signature crispy skin and the juiciest, most flavorful meat that will make you crave for more as soon as you taste it.
Unlike other versions of Lechon, Cebu’s version is so savory that you don’t need any sauce to pair it with. It’s best eaten with puso (a local term for “heart”) - rice in heart-shaped coconut fronds. The best Lechon is said to be from Carcar, a municipality two hours away from Cebu. If you can't make it to Carcar, there are notable restaurants and take-out counters in Mactan and Cebu City that offer Lechon based on Carcar recipe.

Tequila Sunrise **Gwilym Lee**
A/N: Ok the name is literally just because the reader works in a bar in a really warm climate, holiday-popular spot, but it seemed low-key witty at the time. But yeah, this is based off the cute photos of Gwil from Top End Wedding. The idea of Gwil on holiday is so cute. I’m just doing some drabble writing before I get to the requests.
□■□■□■□■□
-you've been working abroad for around 2 years now, having decided to ditch your everyday, 9 to 5 job.
-although you've flicked between working in bars to restaurants, you've always said you'd never go back to your old job and house.
-every morning you get to cycle to work from your cosy, little house, taking in the sights and the locals. before you begin your shift, mainly serving workers and tourists on holiday.
-one day you're behind the bar, sorting out glasses whilst there's a lull in customers, the ceiling fans whirring gently overhead.
-you don't hear a small group of people come in, until they're stood at the bar chatting amongst themselves. you serve them with a smile, always genuine, and make sure to give their order through to the kitchen.
-you're not sure if they're tourists or not, a mix of accents coming through when they speak, but you recognise one as British.
-a male, tall and seemingly very sweet. his brown hair is wavy and flops down over his forehead, until he pushes it off his face by placing his sunglasses on his head.
-he gives you a friendly smile as he and his friends move to a table, and you can't help but follow him with your eyes as he walks away.
-you continue your work, the shift going at its normal pace, a couple of regulars dropping in and a family of obvious tourists. you've gotten a knack now of being able to pick them out. around half an hour later, there's a little sound of someone clearing their throat, although not in an impatient way.
-when you look over your shoulder, you see the British guy from earlier stood at the bar, his fingers drumming on the wooden surface as if he were nervous.
"hello! do you need something?" you ask him politely, walking over from the other side of the bar to stand in front of him. he's a good head higher than you, but you're stood far enough away that you can look up at him without having to crane your neck.
-he scratches his chin, itching the dark beard he's sporting as he looks at the different lagers and ales you have on tap. as he makes his decision, you get a real look at his face for the first time. his eyes are kind, and a startling shade of ocean blue, with long feathery eyelashes. he has a prominent, thin nose and strong jawline too. not the kind of guy you're used to seeing around town.
-definitely a tourist, you think sadly to yourself. no chance of seeing him again after today.
-he makes his choice with a nervous laugh, mentioning how he doesn't really know what the alcohol is like over here. you promise him he will enjoy it, and that it's on good recommendation.
-when he asks who you mean, you hand him his drink and change, and with a cheeky smile, you say "me."
-this gets him to laugh, not nervous like before, but rather smoothly, as though he had finally relaxed. he returns back to his table of friends, and you don't miss the regretful little shake of his head when one of them asks him something.
-when they've finished their meals, the sun is beginning to set and outside you can see that everywhere is illuminated by its soft amber glow. they say goodbye to you as they exit, until only British guy is left. you really ought to stop calling him "British guy", you thought.
-he comes up to the bar to say goodbye, instead of as he walks out the door like his other friends did, and you find this to be quite endearing.
-"sorry, I just wanted to come and giving you something, for being a really nice waitress..." he begins, putting a money note on the bar top. you're not sure if he realises he just put a twenty down, and so you slide it back, refusing to accept such a big tip.
-he presses your hand down over the bill, his warm, soft hand covering yours and making your heart dance a little.
-"please--" he insists, gently turning your hand over and popping the money into your palm, closing your fingers around it with his other hand. "you're really lovely, and it was nice to be served by you." he rambles on, and you find your heart sinking a little as you realise that in a minute he's going to leave, and you'll never see him again.
-you give in and accept his money, thanking him endlessly for being so generous and gentlemanly. he simply waves it off and pops his sunglasses back on, heading towards the door.
-"wait--" you call after him, watching him pause and turn back to look at you. "I would like to know your name, since you've been so nice to me it would be quite rude of me to keep referring to you as British guy."
-it was a lame excuse, but you hoped he wouldn't look into it too much, as you really did want to know his name.
-his raised eyebrows relax as he gives you a full, almost flirtatious, grin. "I'm Gwil." he tells you, before leaving with a little wave.
-Gwil.
-you fall asleep later that night with his name on your mind and his image seared onto your eyelids.
-the next day at work seems to drag on, as you serve the same family from yesterday who have no doubt made the restaurant/bar their "local" for the holiday.
-it gets to about late afternoon and you're getting ready to finish your shift, happy that it's finally the weekend.
-you plan to visit the beach after work, having brought a little bag of clothes to change into.
-just as you're about to clock off, in walks a familiar group of people, and your heart soars as you spot a tall brunette amongst them.
-Gwilym walks straight up to you behind the bar and gives you a friendly wave. however you can't go over to serve him as your co-worker who just clocked in steps behind the bar.
-he catches you as you come out, stopping you from going into the back where your stuff is.
-"hi! did I just catch you finishing your shift?" Gwilym asks, a little worried as he hopes he isn't annoying you by stopping you from getting to leave.
-you nod, "yes I just got off, I'm about to head to the beach, catch some rays." you inform him, not wanting to sound as though you were trying to invite him along, although you definitely were.
-he looks over to his friends that are ordering drinks. "why don't you join us? we were thinking of going for a drink and then the beach until it gets dark."
-you don't want to seem too pleased, but also not hesitant, and so you nibble on your lip as you question whether or not it would be a good idea.
-Gwil senses your pause and shakes his head. "of course if you don't want to that's completely fine, I get it that you had your own plans."
-"I'd love to join you, Gwil. just let me get changed out of my uniform?" you point to the door and he nods, his face lighting up considerably at you accepting his offer.
-you leave him to go tell his friends about you tagging along and hope they won't mind. you change into your swimwear and then throw some cut off denim shorts and a plain tank top over the top.
-had you of known, you would have tried to touch up your makeup a little, but all you could do was redo your hair and freshen up with some perfume.
-you find them sat at the same table as yesterday and join them with a shy wave to the people you don't know.
-Gwil scoots over to let you sit beside him and then proceeds to introduce you to everyone. you tell them your name, to which Gwil realises he never even asked for it, silently grimacing over his bad manners.
-"you've only known her for a grand total of two days, and already you look like an idiot, good job Gwil."
- you listen to the conversation, learning that they're actors, and are currently filming over here. intrigued, you ask them about the film, learning the name and characters.
-Gwil seems to be playing a sweet, funny, if not a little clueless, fiancé to one of the women of the group. you catch him already looking at you when you turn to ask him something, and so you poke your tongue out at him playfully.
-he returns it with a funny face of his own.
-after the group have sunk a few drinks, you all head out for the beach, only a short walk away from the restaurant.
-the sun is lower, so you don't have to worry about the strong rays burning you, meaning you can take of your shorts and vest and sit on the sand.
-they've all brought towels and sun cream, factor 50 no doubt. you've naturally tanned over the past two years; your skin have a gorgeous golden glow to it.
-Gwil sits himself down beside you, having removed his shirt and flip flops. he's not overly buff, and is all soft tummy and curves, which you find adorable and more your kind of type. despite that, he still has broad shoulders and as he leans back on his elbows, you can see the muscles in his back and abs tense up.
-you sit and bask in the sun, talking to Gwil about anything that comes to mind, whilst you bury your feet further into the warm sand.
-you learn about where he was born, his family full of doctors and professionals, and his friends back home. no mention of a girlfriend you notice, and it does nothing to calm your slight nerves.
-"no girlfriend? fiancée?" you ask him, turning over and lying on your front, now facing further up the beach as you speak to Gwilym.
-having tried to not stare the entire time you've sat beside him in just your swimwear, Gwil finds it very hard not to glance at your cute ass, which is lightly dusted with sand. thank God for sunglasses, or else he would be screwed.
-"n-no." Gwil stammers, a little nervously. it doesn't go unnoticed by you, and you scoot a little closer to him.
-"ah, well that's a shame. you're quite a catch." you tell him, nibbling your lip as he turns onto his side to face you, leaning on one shoulder.
-"am I really?" he hums, pushing his sunglasses up onto the top of his head. you mirror him, propping yourself up on one arm as you face him with a coy smile.
-"very much so." you reply, very aware of the fact that his eyes keep flicking between your face and other aspects of your body.
-"would you--uh, like to go out sometime?" Gwil asks you, his tone uncertain but hopeful. you nibble on your lower lip as you tide over his question, excitement bubbling in your stomach at the prospect of Gwil being interested in you.
-they're currently in the middle of filming, according to one of Gwil's co-stars, and so they'll be sticking around for a few more months. one date wouldn't be such a heart-crushing thing, surely?
-"of course." you respond, watching as a relieved smile graces his face.
-"g-great! pick you up tomorrow? how's seven sound?"
-you couldn't help but find his nervous stammering adorable, and reach out to place a hand on his bicep, the muscle tensing under your touch.
-"seven will be great, Gwil."

Hey, I want to visit London in the summer. Do you have any tips?
I don’t live in London, though I’m there for half of the week every week so I suppose I do.
Tourist stuff; feel free to be a tourist. Don’t be embarrassed to whip that camera out, it’s all good.
It’s true, like New Yorkers and Parisians, Londoners are arseholes. But much like the other two cities, not everyone in London is a native, and you have to remember it’s a working, living city, people are busy. It’s an international business hub. However, if you need help look for people who aren’t walking and honestly? Go in to a not so busy shop or cafe, be polite, say ‘sorry, I’m really lost’ and ask for help, people are generally very friendly and willing to help.
You’re gonna wanna do all the tourist stuff and that’s great. I find it weird when people say ‘ooh, don’t do all the tourist stuff! Meet a local! Punch a goat!” Like… People are only here for a week, do the tourist stuff! And the locals aren’t that great.
However! London is not England and London is certainly not the UK. London has it’s own micro culture, if you’re here for like a week or two then it might be nice spending one of those days outside of London. Visit a nice historical city like Oxford or Cambridge or Bath, or come down to Brighton, sit on the beach, have some fish and chips and ice-cream, take a photo outside the Brighton pavilion. If you can venture out further, up in Scotland; Edinburgh is really nice, I went to Aberdeen a while back and visited some castles. I wouldn’t take the train though, save yourself the trouble and take a plane. It’ll probably be cheaper than the train.
Currently, as of January 2019, parts of Westminster Palace and Big Ben (Elizabeth tower) are under construction, so prepare for a slight disappointment if you wanted a photo outside of it. Most of it is sill visible and actually, it’ll be fine.
I am a STRONG believer in disappointment, so you’re gonna wanna go to London Bridge because you think it’s Tower Bridge, realise it’s not Tower Bridge and walk 15 minutes to Tower Bridge.
BUT! Worry not! If you find yourself at London Bridge, walk like 10-15 minutes to Borough Market and like… Eat. There’s quite a bit of freshly made street food and not really expensive, it’s amazing.
You’re gonna wanna take a photo with a red phone box, and that’s all grand but they are diffiult to find nowadays ‘cause most aren’t really functional and are just there for tourists. Don’t go inside, they will smell like wee.
Tower of London has really long waiting times and is quite pricey - I’ve heard it’s not really worth it but ya know…
The best view of London is from the top of The Shard, but don’t be surprised to find that actually London is more attractive from the ground looking up, than looking down. As with most major capitals, it’s pretty built up.
All the major museums are free. You’re gonna wanna hit them up in this order;
Get to the British museum as early as possible when it’s quieter before all the international tour groups arrives. Hit all the big stolen things first, start off with the Egyptian mummies, work your way down to the ground floor and try to get a look/photo of the Rosetta Stone over people’s heads, ‘cause there’s ALWAYS a massive crowd. On that floor are also the Parthenon marbles that the Greeks are desperate to get back. If you’re still there for lunch, there’s a restaurant there that makes amazing wood fired pizzas - they are HUGE. Order one for two or three people.
Natural history and science museums, they’re right next to each other. I won’t lie to you, I’ve outgrown them a bit. Usually full of lots of screaming children. They’re nice buildings though, you might wanna pop in. Don’t have lunch there, it’s ALWAYS busy.
The Victoria & Albert museum [opposite the NHM]- okay, this is my favourite museum and if I were you, I’d go in the afternoon, they have the most beautiful cafe I’ve ever seen, search it up. And they have a wonderful garden to just sit and spend a summer afternoon in, in the summer they have like a pond kinda thing, it’s nice. It’s generally a lot quieter than the other museums too which is lovely. They’ve got lovely art and really nice exhibitions. It’s just a really nice museum.
You’re gonna go to Trafalgar Square anyway and it’s actually really easy to just spend like an hour or so just walking around and seeing stuff. There’s always something going on, street art, performances, protests. But since you’re there, you’re gonna wanna pop in to the National Gallery. They’ve got some beautiful Monet’s and Van Gogh’s, lots of really nice British artists too.
If you’re in to modern art, there’s also the Tate Modern, never been to it. Don’t intent too.
Not a museum but the British Library is really nice and they do hold one of the copies of the Magna Carter.
Nightlife;
London has pretty lively nightlife; pubs and clubs and all that jazz.
If that’s not your scene; there are always comedy shows on, as a country we like our stand up comedians and there’s pretty much always a show on and the tickets are fairly cheap too
Bands and singers are always playing stuff; as with everything, book early.
West End shows; there’s always something on, most shows have Saturday matinees too if you don’t wanna go in the evening. From musicals to Shakespeare, there is absolutely always something on. BOOK ONLINE & BOOK EARLY. It’s expensive and you’re gonna wanna book ahead.
Les Miserables and Phantom of the Opera have been running for forever and show no signs of ever stopping.
Hamilton is also class and I think is also gonna go on forever.
If you’re a little strapped for cash but still wanna go see a show; you can buy a £10 standing tickets for The Globe theatre. Yes, you have to stand like the peasants did and if it rains, you’re gonna get rained on ‘cause it’s an open roof, but it’s a really good experience. It’s all in the original Shakespearean language so be prepared for that.
The National Theatre always have something on too, Cate Blanchett’s got a show on right now.
Transport
Don’t take a black cab, Uber is cheaper.
Wouldn’t really recommend taking ubers or taxis, unless you’re going quite far out. The underground is the most efficient way of getting anywhere.
You can get an oyster card but it’s a £5 deposit, you may as well just go on the TFL website and buy a one week travel card which you can use on buses and the underground. It’s about £35 pp. Yeah, it’s quite pricey but it kinda adds up.
One week bus travel cards are cheaper.
Don’t take the express lines from the airports. Specifically from Gatwick, just take the normal Gatwick to Victoria line, it’s cheaper and only three or four minutes slower than the express. Also, neither train line [express or normal] starts at Gatwick, they both start at Brighton so don’t think you’ll get seats if you go on the Express line. [I don’t know about Heathrow]. The ‘Express’ bit is actually express from Brighton to Gatwick, as opposed to Gatwick to LDN Victoria.
Food
Contrary to popular belief, we don’t just boil stuff and serve it. Although, sometimes we do.
Thanks to immigration, the UK has lots of great food. Great restaurants and street food, markets, all that jazz. Culinary cuisine from Europe to Asia to Africa to McDonalds. .
Try the nation’s favourite… The Great British… Curry.
Go for it, try haggis [you’ll find Scottish restaurants in London] and marmite and all those things tourists think we eat in nations around the island, but don’t be shocked to find it tastes like arse.
Do try: fish and chips, [or just chips, they are very different to ‘fries’, trust me] a full English breakfast, various pies, Yorkshire puddings [not a dessert], actual desserts like Eton mess and trifles and such.
Coffee is just as popular as tea. Coffee is generally seen as a social thing, people don’t really go out for tea so if you’re looking for that classic English afternoon tea with the biscuits and sandwiches, don’t be surprised if you have to actually look up places to experience that.
Currently we’re in the midst of political chaos. The political climate is very interesting, so… don’t bring up politics. Especially if you’re American ‘cause you’re gonna be outnumbered.

Interview Travelita Georgiana Spiridon
Tumblr media
Travelita: 1. What does traveling mean to you? 2. Why is that important?
I believe that traveling contributes a lot in discovering other cultures, both for our mental health (mental hygiene) and professional. Each time I travel, I learn to become confident and in tune with my emotions and desires.
We have only one life, I choose to follow my dreams, make them come true, and travel is something that fulfills me, a fire that burns inside me. I love solo travel because is one of the most rewarding ways to appreciate the world. The independence that it gives you, things it instills in you and know how it allows you to have all the benefits to transform your travels and even your life.
Travelita: 2. Now that I know what it is, now that I know why it's important and relevant, how are you implementing this in your travels? I mean, is there a process that you follow when traveling?
Actually, there is a process that I follow: planning & organizing, financials, develop skills
I plan my trips in December for the entire upcoming year, before I choose the destinations I Iike to think – what am I dreaming about. So this year I wanted to visit the countries where Game of Thrones was filmed – visited Malta on my birthday, in July traveled to Dubrovnik, and for the other half of the year I chose Ireland in August and October in Rome to enjoy it with my mom, she’s my best friend and would like to spoil her for a moment. ☺ Planning ahead it gives me room to save money, now that I have all the tickets booked and accommodations as well. Every time I travel I have this system: 100€/ day, of course, I don't spend it all, but I feel much safer in terms of financials, maybe something comes up and I like to be prepared for any unplanned events. It happened to me once in London at the airport; I needed to pay for my luggage 150£ for some reason, I had that spare money and managed to solve the situation. Otherwise, I always get back home with some of the money, depending on where I'm going and what I plan to buy.
I very much enjoy creating my own travel guide for that specific location I’m traveling to – include what museums/ islands/ castles to visit with a bit of info about it, what to eat, where to shop.
Another thing that I love to do while traveling is to develop a skill that I’m not that aware of in terms of improving it or accepting it. For example, I'm afraid of heights; nevertheless, I always do my best to overcome it. If I keep feeding that overwhelming emotion I would never see cities from above or any gorgeous sceneries when traveling. I know my limit but I never give up, keep trying and always remember — if it scares you, you should do it. This way, I’m returning home with an improved side of me and some awesome photos as a reminder that if I persevere I’m becoming better every day.
Travelita: 3. What if people took advantage of your tips and steps you are providing? What will happen, how will their travels change?
I'm a stickler and a worrier at the same time, people would say that these characteristics are not helping you.  I agree to disagree – sure they’re not something that one could easily live with, but they demonstrated that if I accept them, my true self, I would definitely enjoy what I love the most – see the world, learn from cultures, understand people better, become richer every time.
If people took advantage of my tips and steps I’m providing, I would say that is a very good thing to do and I’m grateful for that. Each and every one of us has our own tips.  I rely on my instinct, learn from my mistakes, stay committed to pursue my dream and practice travel mindfulness – it’s a totally different perspective; that feeling of being present in the moment with openness and curiosity is one of a kind. I recommend it with all my heart, by devoting your full attention to each travel experience as it happens, you appreciate the moment more.
Travelita: 4. Now we would like to get just some general information about you and your travels: (if not answered before) – When did you start traveling?
Started traveling in 2015, visited Belgrade, Serbia. It was a great experience, it resembles a lot with my country. After that, I realized that all I wanted to do is to travel the world as long as possible. However, I was short on money and debated long and hard about what to do next, ultimately developed a plan to save money and to travel more. Since then I’ve traveled to 14 countries and counting! ☺
Tumblr media
Travelita: - Do you remember how you felt when you traveled alone for the first time? - How did you, or do you deal with fears?
I've experienced my first solo trip to Budapest; enjoyed it for 4 days! So awesome, peaceful, the history is everywhere with you, the architecture is astonishing, riverboat trip (highly recommended!) is overwhelming, adding the star of The River Danube – Margaret Island – took a walk, enjoyed the nature! Also, visited the Parliament, 9 Bridges, Buda Castle, Fisherman's Bastion & St. Matthias Church.
Every day, I had an energetic and joyful experience by visiting the main and beautiful tourist attractions. On my second day, I was heading out to visit the castle, and all of the sudden a man approached me on the busiest street in Old Town.
He asked me if I speak English, I thought he needed some help, and I said Yes! :) ...Unexpected, I paid close attention to what I felt in that moment --- the fight-or-flight reaction kicked in, sensed the imagined danger, everything was spinning in my head and my heart was about to pop up --- all of these for a couple of seconds, to me it felt like ages... Moreover, questions were bursting in my head: "What if he wants to hurt me, what if he wants to rob me?" --- All those what-ifs were not actual events, but something I projected into the future.
You know, when your head is playing games and gives you what it thinks is good for you, it never is.
The guy was actually kind, knowledgeable, experienced in meditation, yoga, and healthy lifestyle. We talked about all these things, and what he actually wanted from me was to offer me a book, instead, he ended up giving me three amazing books and a soy cookie. :)
In the end, my fear was only in my head, our thoughts have tremendous power to create our personal universe, so make sure you create a good one! When we go right at it (and through it), fear can teach us so much about our personal powers and strength. There is no other feeling like the triumph you feel when you realize you did not get defeated when you realize that instead, you actually made or did it!
Travelita: - Is there a place where you have been and you would definitely not recommend it for women on their own and why?
Until now I was fortunate enough to meet kind and helpful people and I’m very grateful for that.
Travelita: - Do you still have this excitement, when you go for a trip? - what are your top 5 destinations and why?
I always have this excitement as a very good driver. ☺ My top 5 destinations, I’ll start with Norway for its dazzlingly colored fishing villages, gaping fjords, vast nature, and being an aurora hot-spot, would very much love to see the northern lights. Sweden, for being a diverse place that welcomes people with all sorts of different views and experiences, food and the minimalist style. Santorini, for the Greek people, delicious food, dramatic sceneries, stunning sunsets, beaches. Paris, to feel the romantic vibe, learn about history, walk the streets, and as Audrey Hepburn said: “Paris is always a good idea”. Vienna, because it is one of the most stunning and mesmerizing capitals in Europe.
Travelita: Thank you for the interview!

Petra- A world wonder that is truly deserving of the name
Tumblr media
We have spent the past two days in Petra, a 2,000 year old Nabatean city that is carved out of ancient sandstone cliffs and looks like nothing I’ve ever seen before. It is the most famous site in Jordan, receiving over half a million visitors a year. Many people travel to Jordan just to see this site and I can see why. Made famous in modern times by movies like Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Petra was famous long before that as the Nabatean capital city. The Nabateans came from nomadic tribes of desert people, who became extremely wealthy by controlling the trade routes between the Graeco-Roman kingdoms to the west and Indian and Chinese empires to the east. AJ want to insert more backstory here?
[Guy AJ: OK! Petra is to me a reminder of how fortune comes and goes and how it can build but also reduce empires. About 2,300 years ago a group of nomadic Arabs, later to be called the Nabateans, occupied parts of Southern Jordan and happened to be at the right place at the right time. The world was getting smaller and cultures were coming into contact with each other unlike ever before. Alexander the Great had just introduced half a continent to Greek society, sometimes after razing a town to the ground then building it back up with more floral patterns in their columns. Anyway, all this cultural exchange meant people wanted more things from further away places.
Tumblr media
And what better place to be at that time than Jordan? It is located at the converging point of Africa, Europe, and Asia, a crossroads of significance since the first of our species left Africa. The Nabateans controlled trade routes through this important hub, and were able to acquire great wealth from Indian spices on their way to Alexandria and Greek statues passing through to a Red Sea port. They used their wealth to construct massive and awe inspiring tombs in Petra, which AJ and I stared at in amazement over 2,000 years later, but Petra is so much more than a valley for the dead.
Petra is thought to have been a city of several tens of thousands of people, who bartered over goods in markets, practiced religious rites in temples, and debated public policy in the city’s civic center. The remains of these institutions are mostly in rubble in Petra’s basin area, but the thousands and thousands of potsherds we observed walking around are testimony to the many people who lived here in the literal shadows of the dead from the tombs that ring the city.
Petra was incredibly cosmopolitan - the tombs incorporated stepped motifs from Mesopotamia, obelisks from Egypt, and ornate entablatures from Greece. The columns at Petra are distinctly Nabatean, however, with tops that point out like bull horns unlike any other classical style I’ve seen.
Tumblr media
If fortune created Petra than a loss of fortune eroded it. By the time Petra was absorbed by the Roman Empire in the first century AD, new trade routes and greater confidence in seafaring made Petra increasingly obsolete. Although several earthquakes destroyed parts of the city in the following centuries, it is a ruin not from natural disasters but from money drying up and people gradually leaving to find better prospects elsewhere or to return to the way of life of those who founded Petra, herding in the Arabian desert like descendent Bedouin communities do to this day. Petra is a reminder that the good times don’t always last forever, cough, cough USA.]
Now that you have a little backstory, I’ll go into our experiences. Because we saw SO MUCH during our time in Petra, I’m going to write this blog post a little differently. Rather than chronicling everything, I’m going to narrow it down to the top five sites we saw and our top four practical tips. This should give a good overview of our experiences but also not take twenty years to write. Let’s start off with the practical and then get into the fun!
Top Four Practical Tips for visiting Petra
1)Go for more than one day, and stagger your entrance times
This probably increased our enjoyment of Petra tenfold. Through our Jordan Pass (which is a great deal by the way- it includes your visa fee and the entrance fees for every site we are going to visit in Jordan?!) we had bought two days in Petra. If you’re into archaeology, geology, nature, or just like to take it slower I recommend going for at least two days, because Petra is unique and wonderful and huge and there is just so much to see. You can check off the biggest of the sites in one intense sweaty day, but it is so much more enjoyable to take your time.
We decided to start off our first day super early, so we got into the park at the opening time of 6:00. Petra can get really crowded, but at 6:00 the only person there was the one sole ticket taker (we even got confused for a second, thinking that maybe the site was closed). This was such a good way to start off our first day because during the 40-50 min trek in we were often BY OURSELVES. This was especially cool during the walk through the siq, a box canyon with 500 ft. tall walls that meanders magically through to take you to the reveal of Petra’s most famous site- the Treasury. As we were leaving at 1:30 pm this walkway was packed with people and speeding carriages and decidedly less magical.
Tumblr media
Getting in early we were also able to appreciate the main sites without being inundated by other tourists or salespeople. We actually got photos of the Treasury without other people in them! At one point on our first day I was like “wow AJ we’ve done so much already, it must be time for lunch” but it was 8am.
Starting early, we were able to do the intense hike up to the ceremonial high place while the weather was still cool. During the downhill hour and a half meander through the Wadi Farasa trail it started to get hot, so I was very happy to not have to climb a bajillion stairs again. After that we we saw a couple more of the big tombs, but then during the hottest and most crowded part of the day we were able to peace out without guilt because we knew we had another day. It was only 1 pm when we began the hour trek home, but by that point we had already had a full 7 hour day.
On our second day, we slept in and got started at 10. We actually began at the museum (which is really well done!) so we didn’t make it into the park until 11:00. Because we had already seen a lot of the main sites we were able to walk straight through to the parts we hadn’t seen and take our time. Then in the mid afternoon we began our all uphill hike to Petra’s Monastery.
I was worried about hiking uphill during the hottest part of the day but because we had gotten a late started we had energy, and a good chunk of the path was shady (side note-this is supposed to be one of Petra’s low seasons because it supposedly gets so hot, but it was in the 80s for us- not too bad!). We were able to have a picnic and enjoy the views, and then walk back through Petra during golden hour right before sunset. Again, there were almost no people! I think many visitors do a quick one day tour where they come in between 10-11 and only stay for a couple of hours. It was so nice to have the full two days in Petra, to get it when it was not crowded, and to see it in the different types of sunlight.
2) Think of the practicalities (you’re going to be doing a lot of hiking)
So real talk, AJ and I looked like dorks in Petra. We were wearing long sleeve tactical hiking gear with pants and had backpacks on with 10 liters of water and snacks (& when I say WE carried 10 liters of water I really mean guy AJ did, he’s such a beast). And yet we saw people in fancy dresses and high heels with no water?? Granted not everyone has to hike for 8 hours a day like we did, but it’s still at least a 50 min hike in through the dirt. You can buy water in the site, but it is way overpriced and it was nice to never have to worry about getting stranded somewhere without it. Plus we drank all of it and never got dehydration headaches👌🏻. It’s also fun to pack in a picnic to enjoy in the park. There are a couple restaurants in the site, but if you bring your own you can pick your spot (with lots of awesome views to choose from). There are also toilets on site, but it’s good to bring tp and handsanitizer because they are often not well stocked. Since it gets super sunny, wearing pants and a long sleeve t-shirt was clutch for the rocky trails, sun protection, and out of respect because despite tourist short shorts, we are still in a Muslim county.
Tumblr media
If nothing else, at least wear tennis shoes and bring water.
3) Climb to some high places and get some views!
We did two uphill hikes while in Petra, one to the Ceremonial High Place (for ceremonies) and one to the Monastery. We took both slowly, and while they were steep & straight up hill, there were steps that made them doable. Each climb took about 45-60 minutes one way, with lots of breaks. The views at the end made them all worthwhile. It allowed us to pull back and really see the landscape of the wadi (valley). Both hikes ended up being two of our favorite aspects of Petra- so I’ll talk more about them later.
Tumblr media
4) Don’t just try to check off all the main sites- go off the beaten path
Maybe because I had only really seen pictures of the Treasury, I didn’t realize before visiting how large Petra is. Since it was a complex city, the site is spread out and there are SO many places to see. On our first big day I realized just how exhausting trying to check off all the big ones in one day truly is. Some of our favorite aspects were going off the beaten path and exploring random less famous aspects of Petra. It’s fun to find your favorite tomb or take a rest on a side trail, all of which you don’t have time for if you’re trying to power through all the greatest hits.
Now on to the fun stuff!
Top Five Sites of Petra
5)Exploring the unnamed tombs
Tumblr media
This fits in very well with our last tip from above. At around 7:15 am after hiking through the siq and spending some time at the treasury, we wandered off the main path to explore some of the unnamed tombs. Each tomb is different, it is fun to pick out your favorites and think about the people who would’ve been buried here or celebrated in these smaller places. They are more intimate than the larger tombs, and it feels really adventurous to get to walk around in these ancient buildings. The sandstone is often gorgeous, and it was really peaceful to take a break in these cool chambers. Also AJ named one the tomb of the drunken sailor cuz it was slanted.
4)Wandering through the Siq
Walking through the siq was a magical experience every time it happened, but especially without crowds and in the light at dawn and dusk. The first time it came as a surprise. We were hiking down from the visitors center when all of the sudden the landscape changed and we were at the entrance to the Siq, a 500 ft. tall canyon with imposing walls that almost block out the sun. Running along the path you can still see the distinct curves used for the Nabatean irrigation system. There are sculptures hidden along the pathway including the remains of what would’ve been a 10 ft. tall camel carving. You can see why the Nabateans would have chosen this geologic feature as their grand entrance, and it served to create a sense of magic for entering this special place.
3)Hiking the Wadi Farasa Trail
Tumblr media
On the first day after I thought we’d be in Petra for months but it was only 8 o’clock, we started our hike up to the Sacrificial High Place. I’m glad we started early because it was a steep 45 minute hike and at 8am it wasn’t too hot. After a brief kerfuffle with a donkey (a Bedouin woman was trying to call it to her but we kept accidentally scaring it uphill), we made it to the top! There are panoramic views of Petra, including Aaron’s tomb. This was a sacred place where the Nabateans worshipped the sun and moon with a built in blood drain for sacrifices. It’s easy to tell why it is sacred- up there it’s so easy to feel close to the sky. AJ and I took a moment to lie down on the top to worship the celestial deities as the sun and morning moon faced off above us. Also, it was a tiring hike and we needed to lie down. Next, rather than going back down the steep way we came, we took the Wadi Farasa trail. There was all sorts of cool archaeology (a giant lion fountain!) and geology (sandstone with manganese and iron stripes!) to see on the way down. My favorite part was the the combination of the tomb of the Roman soldier and the garden triclinium because they are directly across from each other, and with the rubble from the column lined promenade it was easy to picture how the ancient people would’ve used this beautiful space.
2)The hike to the Monastery/the end of the world
Tumblr media
Our second favorite site was on our other high place trek. This one we did in the late afternoon, and since it is through a canyon it was often shaded. We had a picnic lunch at the top in front of the monastery (one of the largest tombs in Petra that was later turned into a church). However, my favorite part was a spot beyond the monastery. We hiked 15 minutes further to the edge of the mountain to this little Bedouin tent & the views were INSANE! We could see so many mountain ranges come together to into this steep valley, with a convergence of different types of rocks. Guy AJ liked it because, in his words, “we’ve finally reached the edge of Petra.” In other words it was the first time we looked out and didn’t see any archaeology; we had found an end to this seemingly endless site. It was one of the prettiest places I’ve ever seen.
1)The Treasury reveal
The treasury (or the Khazneh) is the most famous site in all of Petra. Its location is featured in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, as well as countless other movies. In person the detail and scope is awe inspiring, and made all the more impressive by the long walk we had just had through the Siq. The first time the canyon opens up we saw this amazing 2,000 year old building. It was wonderful to get it almost to ourselves in the morning, and we also got to say goodbye without the crowds on the last day. It’s the most famous part of Petra, but for a good reason.
Tumblr media
All in all Petra is one of the coolest places I’ve ever seen, a highlight of this trip and of my life.
Love,
The very impressed Ajs

related to that ask about places you've visited: what tips would you have for somebody who only knows english who would like to visit places like italy or japan? or maybe just tips for an inexperienced traveler?
read up on the place beforehand, like the culture, customs, and etiquette. people are used to tourists everywhere these days, but you don’t want to be That Person. also have a phrasebook with you (the lonely planet ones are great!) and use as much of the local language as you can - again, they’re used to tourists, but it’s polite to make an effort when you’re a guest in someone else’s country.
both italy and japan are relatively easy places to travel around, especially because they each have a big tourist industry, but it’s still important to read up and be prepared. this is especially the case if you’re travelling alone and have never been there before. also you can get more involved in the culture and experience things differently if you don’t go blundering around like a stereotypical tourist who just wants to take photos in front of statues and talks to all the locals in english.
for the same reason, it’s worth reading a guidebook before you go - again, I swear by lonely planet, because their whole ethos since the 1970s has been about travelling and experiencing places like a local and going in with total respect for the people you’re meeting and the places you’re in. their books have lots of good tips and information about the culture at large, rather than just giving you run-downs of all the top sights.
also very important - pack smart and pack light. if you forget something, you can almost certainly find a replacement wherever you’re going (especially italy & japan), so don’t get in your head about it. just make sure you have all the international adaptors you need, and back up all your devices before you go (although i’d recommend not bringing many if you can avoid it). smart walking shoes, waterproof clothing if weather requires it (i usually just have an emergency rain poncho with me), something comfortable for the plane. use your common sense about all this, and remember that everything you bring with you is something you’ll have to be lugging around the whole time. it often helps to make a list in advance where you can tick everything off if you’re worried about losing track of anything, esp. if you’re changing hotel rooms regularly. be smart about valuables and minimise the amount you bring with you - not just to keep it safe, but also to retain your peace of mind. you don’t want to be worrying about important jewellery or a laptop when you’re walking about a city you’ve never been to before.

春假在北京:Spring Break in Beijing
For the first half of my spring break, I went to Beijing! Before the semester started, when I learned that we were going to have a week-long spring break to do whatever we wanted, I knew immediately that I wanted to use this opportunity to visit some of China’s most famous sites, especially because this was my first time in China and I don’t know the next time I’ll be back. If I’m going to be in China, why not go see the Great Wall and the terra-cotta warriors?
Tumblr media
I traveled with three other people from my program, and we decided to rent Airbnb’s instead of staying in hotels. In my opinion, Airbnbs are often more worth your money because you usually have more amenities and space to move around. In Beijing, we stayed in a pretty nice apartment in the Shuangjing Subdistrict (双井街道 – Shuāng jǐng jiēdào) of the broader Chaoyang District (朝阳区 – Zhāoyáng qū). Our Airbnb was also in a gated community, so definitely pretty safe. Our host was very nice and even gave us some nearby restaurant recommendations.
Tumblr media
On our first night, we walked around the neighborhood a bit to get a feel for the area and then ate 火锅 (huǒguō – hot pot) for dinner. 火锅 is one of my favorite things to eat in China because I love the communal aspect of it and the variety of foods you can add to it. This time, I tried my first 麻辣火锅 (málà huǒguō –málà pretty much translates to “numbingly spicy”)! It was good but definitely way too spicy to eat very often (at least for me!). Fortunately, we also ordered 番茄火锅 (fānqié huǒguō – tomato hot pot) so I could switch between the two when I needed a break.
On the first full day that we were there, we went to 天安门 (Tiān'ānmén – Tiananmen Square) and 故宫 (Gùgōng – the Forbidden City). It was definitely a strange feeling to be in Tiananmen Square, especially considering that this year is the 30th anniversary of the 1989 protests. I’ve never been in a place with more security cameras than Tiananmen – every single street light pole had 5-10 cameras on it, each pointing in a different direction. It didn’t surprise me considering the contentious history of the site, but it was still jarring. There were also security guards all over. Once you pass through the gate itself, you can head to the Forbidden City, which is just massive! None of us on the trip had any idea how long it was going to take us to walk from one end to the other. While it was wonderful to see this beautiful, ancient architecture, it did get a little tedious after a while, mostly due to the repetition of architectural motifs and the high volume of crowds within the site. Still an incredible visit though! Just a lot of walking.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Afterward, we went to 大栅栏 (Dà zhàlán – Dashilan), which is a famous shopping street. We got to browse the souvenir shops as well as local stores. Then, that night, we went out for 北京烤鸭 (Běijīng kǎoyā – Beijing roast duck), which I’ve only ever had once before in Chicago. We knew that if we were going to be in Beijing, this was a must. We went to one of the restaurants that our Airbnb host recommended to us, which at first we couldn’t find because it was on the second floor. We also wondered if the restaurant didn’t usually get many foreigners, because all of the waitstaff and cooks were very interested in us and kept coming by to watch us eat or give us tips on how to eat it correctly. But we didn’t mind too much, because the duck was absolutely incredible! The chef brings the duck out to the table and slices it right in front of you and then takes the bones and leftover meat away to be made into a soup you can eat at the end of your meal. It was so delicious, and probably one of the best meals I’ve had since being in China.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
On the second day, we went to 长城 (Chángchéng – the Great Wall)!! There are numerous sections of the Great Wall that you can visit, and one of the most famous is 八达岭 (Bādálǐng), so we decided not to go there. We chose 慕田峪 (Mù tián yù) instead, which is known for its scenery. 90% of the surrounding environment of Mutianyu is comprised of forest, but since the weather is still cool, most of the trees were still pretty brown. I would love to go back in the summer when everything is green! Fortunately though, because it isn’t summer yet, there were very few tourists there, so it was very quiet and peaceful, much more so than I was expecting. One of my friends and I took a cable car to get up to the top of the wall, which was fast and a great way to see parts of the wall from above. It was absolutely breathtaking to see this ancient wall for the first time after learning about it and seeing pictures of it for pretty much my whole life. The Great Wall is definitely a place that you have to experience for yourself because pictures really can’t replicate how huge it is or the feeling of actually being up on the wall.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The third day there was much more relaxed, and we took some time to just walk around again, both in our neighborhood and beyond. Compared to Nanjing, Beijing definitely feels more like the type of massive Chinese city that I was expecting when I came to China. No matter where I’ve been in Nanjing, it’s always felt very local despite still being a big city, whereas Beijing felt much more modern and busy.
Tumblr media
A couple disappointments from this part of our trip:
We wanted to take a bus tour of Beijing on our last day to really see the city, and we found information about a really cool 3-hour tour online that took you around the city at night, but when we got to the location where the tour buses departed, we found out that those tours are only during the summer! It was quite disappointing, especially as we chose not to go on other daytime tours in order to take this one, and because there was no mention of this seasonal restriction online.
I also wanted to go to the 798 Art District, but unfortunately, I didn’t have enough time, which is too bad because I haven’t had the chance to see much contemporary art since I’ve been in China. If I had known that our tour bus situation wasn’t going to work out, I probably would’ve gone there on our last day instead.
But overall, this was a wonderful glimpse of Beijing, and I would love to go back to experience more of the modern city life, especially because we went to so many touristy and historical sites on this particular trip.
xoxo 梅迪~
P.S. If you want more photos of the Great Wall and other places I visited over break, stay tuned because I will have a couple posts up in the near future that will be strictly photos!

Caramel Skin Under a Vanilla Sky prt 12 draft
Hitching a ride on a tourist shuttle out the Garrison, it was another hop skip and a jump over to Erathus. The ship docking station above the planet was something else. The sheer size putting the castle ship to shame as he was swept along with the visiting masses. Pulling out his communicator, he snapped a few shots before sending the photos though to his mother. She'd cried all morning as they triple checked he had everything. Rachel turning up at the very last moment with silly tourist trinkets so he wouldn't forget home. It would have been a nice sentiment if she hadn't followed up by informing him that she'd called Ronnie and told her he was heading out and to lock up all eligible women in the universe. Laughing at his sister, they missed the pain that flashed through his deep blue eyes. Lance fazing out for half a moment to come back in as Luis complained that Veronica should hurry up and ask Acxa out, suggesting Lance give the pair a push if needed. The pair had grown close. Lance was also silently hoping Veronica would ask Acxa out, purely so everyone else would leave his lack of relationship alone... that and Veronica needed to get laid. Not that he had experience in that. He'd never slept with Allura and as pathetic as it sounded, he was saving his first time for someone special. He'd wanted a future with Allura. He wanted the huge white wedding, children, growing old together. Yet as he looked back on his relationship with her, he could see all the ways it'd been lacking. Allura was still hung up on Lotor. It didn't matter to her that months had passed. He'd been her first great love. Her first choice. If he hadn't turned out to be such an evil dick Lance would never had a chance. It's fucking hurt. There hadn't been enough hours in the day to transfer the pain that weighed him down. He'd surrounded himself in junipers like a fool, and was forced to face the result each time he looked out the window of his families home. "Former Paladin Lance?" Lost in his own little world of sending photos through to his family, Lance blinked in confusion at someone calling for him. Dressed in black, three burly Galra were waiting for him. Lance swallowing hard as a lump of fear rose in his throat "Yep. Yeah. That's me" "We have come to collect you. The ambassador is most anxious to meet you" Oooooh. So these guys were also working security? They all looked hardy enough to handle anything thrown at the ambassador "Sweet. Thanks for coming to collect me. You can just call me..." He didn't want to be Lance. Lance was the loser on Earth who couldn't go without screaming nightmare more than few weeks at a time "Leandro. Leandro is fine" "Very well, Leandro. If you'll please come with us" The lack of introduction should have been Lance's first clue that something wasn't quite right. Taking the grav-elevator down to planet level, Lance tried not to gawk at the buildings so reminiscent of the "golden age of Hollywood". Even the cars were fashioned on long gone models. Keith would have had a field say. Especially when he saw the bikes. "Everything alright, Leandro?" "Yeah. I mean... yes. Just taking it all in, my dudes" Why did his anxieties have to flare up to make him sound like an absolute moron. "My dudes"?!? Seriously. What was that? God. He wanted this job so badly he could taste it, now he probably making the Galra wonder why their boss had ever hired anyone like him. His awkward sentence was only made worse when no one made any sort of reply. His mouth was urging his brain to keep talking, to somehow talk his way out of the situation. Lance would do that. But Leandro. Leandro was cool and sophisticated. Leandro would hold his tongue and not get them into any more trouble, or get them fired before he'd even met the ambassador. Waiting at the station at the bottom of the grav elevator, was a long slick black limousine with tinted windows. A forth alien also dressed in black gave a small bow as they approached "It's a pleasure to meet you. Please make yourself comfortable" Opening the door for them, Lance climbed inside first. Feeling incredibly small and grotty when compared to luxurious white leather seats, and flawlessly polished gold accents of the space "It's magnificent, isn't it?" Nearly jumping on fright, Allura popped into view across from him. Her form hovering for a second or two, before one of the Galra of the party took the seat she'd been occupying "Everything ok, Agent Leandro?" "Agent Leandro" he liked the sound of that. It was better than "former Paladin", or "Lance, the boy from Cuba" "Yes, thank you" "Excellent" Again, trying not to appear too eager, Lance watched the world outside the window as the limousine silently weaved it was through the traffic. It was both jarring and mesmerising to see this version of Earth, where they'd even put up large clocks all over the place with various Earth times and cities displayed underneath. Arriving at spacious mansion, it took everything Lance had not to gape as the door of the limousine was opened. A whole crowd of staff stood to order as their group made their way towards the front doors. Gripping the strap of his backpack nervously, Lance was mentally reciting every single prayer his mother had drummed into him in Spanish. He loved his mother, yet even at 21, he still feared her pink slipper that used to come out of nowhere when he'd stumble with his prayers. Many a time he'd dived into bed with Luis or Marco for protection from his mother's tough love. Walking through the group, he was blind to the looks and whispers cast his way, just as he was blind to the effect his trailing scent left in some of those. All he wanted to do was make a good impression, and you only had one shot at making a great first impression... The ambassador was a mammoth. Not a literal mammoth, though he would definitely rival one in size. He was huge. Bigger than Zarkon. Bigger than Sendak. He hesitated to use the word grizzled as his mind still associated it with Keith and ridiculously ripped physique. Buuut damn. He was one solid unit "Red Paladin Lance! Welcome, welcome! I am Klearo. Please come in" He was already inside. Though he was sure that if he was outside he would have heard him as clearly "He's loud, isn't he?" Goddamn Allura. He wasn't doing this "Thank you. I'm Leandro, Lance is my former name" Laughing, the large alien walked over and clamped a hand on his shoulder "It is most nice to meet you Leandro. Come let us talk. You drink, yes?" It was way too early in the morning for drinking... and he would have said "no" if he wasn't still working on creating a great impression "I do on occasion" "Then we drink! I fill you in on your mission details right? There are those out there who think they can kill the great Klearo! I laugh. Then they shoot at Klearo, so I call back the one they call the greatest shooter of Voltron!" Lance had to wonder if Klearo hadn't already started drinking before his arrival. It'd explain why the alien was so bloody loud. With his overly hairy appearance, he seemed like some kind of semi-intelligent ape rather than a diplomat. Having given his own peace talks, the kind of vibe he was picking up Klearo didn't match with what was expected. None the less. He'd come to do a job, and that he was exactly what he intended to do. * Klearo was awkward on stage. His jokes falling so flat that Lance felt a twinge of sympathy for the huge alien. He'd also learned that his presence at these kinds of things proved a hinderance more than a help. Totally not copying Keith or the Blades, Lance started employing the use of a full face mask, allowing the crowd to concentrate on Klearo rather than him. Not that Klearo seemed to care. The "warm" reception had faded the first time a person in the crowd called out of him to speak instead. He was on the outside of the rest of the team, leading to his anxieties only worsening. Part of him wanted to throw it all, go back home and play farmer, but the bigger part of him wanted to actually be useful. He didn't want go home as a failure all over again. He'd only been there for a movement before everything went quiznakking wrong. Forced to drink with an angry Klearo, it wasn't until his third of forth drink that he noticed something strange. His tongue was tingling, as were the tips of his fingers and toes. Standing beside the chair he was lounging in, Allura leaned in "Its drugged" Ignoring her, he drained the rest of his drink. What reason would they have to drug him? He was doing his job, even if he wasn't making friends. Struggling up, the world started to spin "Leandro?" "I think that's it for me" His words were slurred. Climbing to his feet, his legs wouldn't hold resulting in him landing ungainly on the floor "Did you drug me? Guys... come on..." Placing down his glass, Klearo rose "Bring him through. Don't damage him too badly" Hauled up by the arms, Lance tried to struggle against the drugs coursing through his system. Spluttering and mumbling weak objections, he was dragged along the hallway to Klearo's personal chambers. That's when Lance knew he was well and truly fucked. Thrown down on the bed in the middle of the room, Lance was flipped onto his back. His arms pulled upwards to be bound "No... let me go..." His slurred repeated utterances went ignored. The thin cloth of his casual shirt torn to pieces by a human-sized alien with four eerily green eyes. Blinking at him with his top two eyes, the alien didn't stop "Leave us!" Flinching at how loud Klearo's voice was, Lance "struggled" against his bindings. His eyelids drooping despite how hard he tried to hold open them. When the bed dipped under Klearo's weight, he screamed "Someone shut him up. His voice irritates my ears" Above him came a set of thick Galra arms, a gag shoved into his mouth causing his eyes to water. This... if this was a joke, he wasn't laughing "Do you have any idea how annoying you are? All we had to go through to get you? And you weren't even worth it in the end" That stung. Shouldn't it be a good thing if he didn't actually have to use the blaster he'd been provided with? Didn't that mean that the threats Klearo had received amounted to nothing? Feeling the aliens large hands on his hips, Lance whimpered as they were unzipped "You smell amazing. I've wanted to do this ever since I smelt you..." "Ngh!" That was the best no he could get out "And now I have my very own Paladin beneath me. I wanted your lion, but they say the lions left" He what now? What... oh... fuck. This was bad... twisting, he fought the numbness weighing him down. Trying his hardest to kick, he couldn't raise his legs off the bed "The Red Paladin. Affiliated with Fire. Show me why the people like you, instead of me!" The pain was nothing Lance could describe. The dull feeling of thick fingertips against his opening. The sharp rip as Klearo shoved a nailed finger inside, the swelling instinct to repel the foreign digit. The laughing goes Klearo as he shoved a second finger in. The moment of relief when the fingers slid out, the silent scream as his eyes shot wide when Klearo buried himself brutally between his legs in one sharp thrust. Screaming around the gag, his body rocked without his permission with each thrust Klearo gave, the haired alien taking his hips in his hands so hard Lance thought the bones were going to snap. Beside him Allura sat looking prim, a frown on her face the only sign that she felt something wrong with the situation. Vomiting into his mouth, Lance was torn a little further. Blood oozing over the blue sheets beneath him as turned red, spreading across his inner thighs as it smeared into Klearo's hair. The smell driving him into further hysteria. The sounds of wet slaps echoed in his ears. Picking up his pace, Klearo grabbed him by the hair as he grunted hard, tearing out a thick chunk as the man's dick pulsed, Klearo coming with enough force he felt as if the man was flooding him with a hose. Screaming in despair, choking on vomit and accidentally locking eyes with Allura, his body betrayed him. Dry orgasm from having his prostate pounded against incessantly rolled through him. The degree of shame was something he'd never thought possible. His employer had just raped him... and he'd come. Pulling out of him, Klearo hushed him as Lance's lower half spasmed with pain uncontrollably "My own Red Paladin painted with his own red blood... what a masterpiece" Clicking his fingers, a servant came forth. The moment the gag was removed, vomit spilt from his lips as he wretched and heaved "Pack him up. We leave tonight as planned. Make sure you don't let him die. We're getting that Red lion, and he's the key to it" The same arms came over his vision, Lance staring up at the ceiling as he was untied and gathered up onto the shoulder of a Galra. Carried out the bedroom, he could feel the cum and blood running down his thighs, the cold air of the manor slowly drying it into a crust as he bounced like a rag doll. He'd raped him and he'd come. Why?! Why did he come? He didn't want this... he didn't want any of this! Reaching a waiting vehicle, another hand came down to grab his hair, forcing his head up. Unable to raise his gaze, he stared at the red "y" shape on the arm. Was it a brand or a tattoo? He couldn't tell... he didn't know. Dropping his head, Lance's nose smacked against the fabric of his suit... a weird feeling bubbling up inside... he almost... wanted to laugh? Was it laugh? He didn't know what he wanted, his mind was foggy, slowly joining the uselessness his body held "He's still conscious. We can't have kicking up a fuss when drugs wear off. Put him under and keep him under until we arrive" "Yes, sir" * Stabled naked on the floor of a dingy room, Lance hovered in and out of consciousness as he huddled in the furtherest corner. Every few vargas someone would come in and he'd been dosed with a glowing yellow liquid. With each passing dose, a moment of euphoria would pass through him. A taste of life he'd never felt before. And one he was anxious to feel again and again, despite that with each passing dose, the effects would wear off faster and faster. On the quintants it felt like they'd forgotten him, when the doses were further apart, the feeling of satisfaction they supplied lasted longer when they did finally remember him. After he'd been initially transferred, Klearo had forced him to show his face as he gave another speech. His voice was too ruined to ask for help. His employer had promised to reveal him to the world for the disgusting pervert he was, if he didn't keep his mouth shut. How he was supposed to keep his mouth shut, and be tortured for information on the Red lion, he didn't know. When they'd realised he'd ruined his throat they finally locked him away. Left alone in the dark, Lance had all the time in the world to think. Shiro would have found a way out of here by name, his trade mark "patience yields focus" staying first and foremost in his mind. He was biding his time. Keith too would have found a way free by now. Hunk... Hunk was too fucking pure, the same went for his favourite Gremlin. If they'd gone after the other lions... god... he was almost grateful to be the one captured. He was the one stupid enough to leap right in. Hunk would have declined so he could spend more time with Shay. Pidge had never loved the limelight. Keith would have been asking questions from the get go... and Shiro.... Shiro was finally in a good place. No. He was the goddamn useless idiot who'd jumped at the job. He'd walked right into the stupid trap, and deserved all he got. Smacking his head against the wall over and over, he was so fucking done waiting for the right moment. Waiting until the drug doses came on the back of other. Waiting until they believed him too far out of it fight back. What did it all really matter anyway? Allura stood there and watched each time he was taken. She'd be there to sit beside him in the dark after they'd deposit his body back in the cold. He couldn't give them Red. He was long gone with the rest of the Lions. Lance was aware of how much Red had done to hold him together. How he'd shouldered Lance's burdens when Allura had died. How he soothed Lance with a gentle rumbling purr on the nights he woke up with no idea where he was. He didn't have Red anymore. Allura had brought him back wrong. His body was less and less his as the quintants passed, leaving him with a never ending boiling anger he could only direct inwards. Pain was the only thing that made things real. But whatever they shot him up with took away that pain... It could have movements. It could have even been phoebs, but as he'd expected his body adapted to the frequent injections. Lance now strong enough to hide the failings of their workings as he was escorted from his cell. He knew others were there somewhere. He'd heard screams night after night that attested to such. Dragged into Klearo's chambers, he stumbled as he was released and nudged towards the bed. Klearo insisted on taking him first, after him, the order didn't matter. Not moving fast enough, Lance was taken by the arm and forcible pulled across the space before being pushed down. His fingers itched to grab the blaster on his tormentors hip, yet he had to wait. He had to wait until Klearo was there, or none of this meant anything. Sitting like a doll at the end of the bed, he no longer flinched as the Galra by his side ran his hand down Lance's bare back. He no longer flinched when the beasts nails tore at his skin, adding to the already disturbing collection across his skin. Tucking a stray strand of hair back behind his ear, the Galra leaning in to sniff deeply "You smell so fucking good" Grinding his teeth together, Lance forced himself not to act. Patience yielded focus "Klearo wants you placid. Open your mouth" This was new. This wasn't in his plans. He couldn't let them force other drugs down his throat. Opening his mouth, the Galra pushed a hand flat against it, forcing tablets inside as he'd feared. They tasted as nice as the liquid they poured down his throat before they'd start whipping him for not being able to call back the Red lion. He couldn't keep waiting. He couldn't go through that again. The pain between his legs that never truly left. Biting the webbing between the thumb and pointer, Lance tore the flesh between his teeth. Howling in anger, the made it worse by tearing his hand way. Spitting out the flesh and tablets, blood ran down Lance's chin. His teeth and lips red as he smiled "You bastard!" Scrambling for his blaster, Lance snatched it up first. He felt nothing a he pulled the trigger. Nothing as he blood spurted from the shot to the neck. Firing again, he aimed for the groin, firing over and over until the Galra was dead on the floor. The piece of shit deserved it. They all fucking deserved it. Laughter bubbled up at the sight before him. The Galra's genitals shot to hell, a bloodied mess that couldn't even been called genitals. Stalking the halls of the ship Lance shot indiscriminately. He'd thought himself planet side due to the lack of the sounds of engines, and the constant streams of guests Klearo entertained. He knew the difference by now. Klearo's underlings all bore the same "y" like tattoo, Red in respect to their goal of taking the Red Lion. Despite being a largely Galra force, not all that followed Klearo were Galra. Lance's stomach had dropped when he'd learned the faction was made up of those who Voltron had failed. Klearo was indeed an ambassador. He was the ambassador of Voltron's failures. Lance no longer cared. He couldn't care. As he limped those halls, he was Leandro. Leandro got things done. Everyone associated with this fucked up... group deserved to die. So they did. It was that simple. Hunting them down as they ran, the ship's alarms blared dying the world red from the ship's flashing lights. Everything surrounding him was Red. Along the way he took clothes of smaller aliens closer to his size, at Allura's begging. Slipping them into place on his tender and bruised frame, his body was his. He was done with sharing his body without permission. It didn't matter that the clothes were bloodied, nor did it matter that the fabric was rough against his skin. They were best clothes he'd ever worn. Clearing all those he could find, Klearo had already left. Allura trailing behind him as he walked, pleading with him to take a pod and leave. Pleading with him to let those left live. He couldn't. If there was no trace of what had been done to him left, then it never happened. If it'd never happened to him, then he was just Leandro. Bodyguard and sharpshooter extraordinaire. Yeah. Lance was weak. Lance had been tricked. Leandro wouldn't be tricked. He wouldn't take mercy. He was going to track down Klearo and he was going to make sure that no one who knew what happened lived. His blue eyes were filled with humour as he strode through the bloodied halls. Laughter bubbled out his lips over how some bodies had slumped. Making his way to the control room, he strode over to the main computer, to find it locked. That wasn't very nice. He'd shown them such a good time with his body. Oh well. He was just going to have shoot the damn thing into submission. So he did. Destroying the control room with his blaster, thick acrid smoke rolled off the twisted metal as fire started to lick at the floor. It was tempting to stay, to let himself be consumed, but his mission wasn't done. His boss was out there unprotected and in need of his skills.
