My favorite reclist of the year! It’s the best excuse to reread beloved fics and shout about them again. I couldn’t wait any longer to post it, so, without further ado: here are my personal favorites from 2023 and why I love them, along with a banner I’m really pleased with.

I Fall On Grass by @tackytigerfic Drarry, T, 3.1k

I adore stories with mature characters and this one is no exception. It’s so charming: gentle pining over the years, throughout the realities of life and parenthood, written with such a light hand. And lovely worldbuilding of a slow life that they built for themselves, which left me smiling the whole day after reading it. It feels like a soft caress for my soul.

It’s Me or the Peacock by harrows Drarry, T, 4.6

Do you ever feel like reading a fun, lighthearted fic that will have you grinning all day? Look no further, this is the one. Picture this: established Drarry taking the plunge to move in together, except Draco is bringing his “avian third wheel” with him, adding a feathered twist to the mix. Harry can’t quite believe what’s happening and that’s not even the half of it. This fic is a delight!

Oh, this fic!! I swear my whole body was wiggling with delight when I read it – it’s hilarious and hot and so witty. Draco has a type, which leads to a fun case of mistaken identity, all artfully resolved with the intervention of a conniving seagull, Kevin. Brace yourself for some sassy Slytherin banter, side characters so vividly portrayed they’ll steal your heart (Goyle, I’m looking at you), and the enchanting backdrop of a magical Brighton in the summer. Cue the squeals of delight!

A Saviour’s Guide to Manners and Decorum by @wolfpants Drarry, E, 13k

I have read every fic Wolf has written this year and, let me tell you, choosing just one feels like an impossible task – I wish I could include them all. But here is my pick, and it’s not because it happened to be my birthday gift. This fic is a gem, seamlessly blending humor with a soft, wistful touch (oh, and do I need to mention it’s also incredibly hot?). It resonates because Harry just wants to be accepted for who he is, refusing to change for anyone (as he rightly shouldn't!). Enter Draco, who is here to help, and not to “fix him”. Sprinkle that with a subtle hint of D/s dynamics, a generous serving of UST, and a sensual shaving scene, and you have got the perfect fic. LOVE!

I only want the ones I envy (I envy) by @porcelainheart3 Drarry, E, 13.5k

This fic is so stunning! A coming-out story with writing so clean and sharp it made me laugh out loud through (lots of) inevitable tears. It has a very competent magical inventor Draco, who wears sock garters(!). It has Harry on a self-discovery journey that feels so very real; with a heart-wrenching childhood flashback that will leave you shattered. It has the most supportive friends. It has banter and flirting and so many wonderful details (look closely at the newspaper in the fic for an extra dose of laughter). And let's not forget the most incredibly emotional blow job; talk about smut with feelings! It’s one of those fics that made me read the rest of the author’s catalog immediately (and trust me, you should too!).

A Time, Dark and Divine by @moonflower-rose Established Drarry, Draco/Ron/Harry, E, 17k

Oh boy oh boy oh boy, this fic is so scorching hot. And their dynamic is so complex: jealousy and possessiveness wrapped up in a delicious package of a boys' trip in Thailand. A stunning Ron POV filled to the brim with complicated history and tension, incredible characterization for all three of them, culminating, inevitably, in hot-hot-hot sex. I couldn’t get this story out of my head for days. If you, like me, like feelings with your smut, this one’s for you!

Waking Up Slow by @sweet-s0rr0w and @ihopeyoubothstaysafefromharm Drarry, E, 22k

This story is so charming and whimsical! First of all, this Draco is such an utter delight that I fell in love with him right away. He’s so entertaining! The concept of Christmas in July gives the story a wonderfully atmospheric and slightly wistful tone. Add to it a very domestic and playful dynamic between Draco and Harry, top-notch dialogue, so many creative details, and an absolutely delicious and intimate sex scene. From beginning to end, this fic is so warm and touching; a gentle romance that feels as if it was enchantingly sprinkled with a cheering charm.

This fic is hilarious, mischievous, and sexy all at the same time. And also a little bit unhinged in the best possible way. It had me in its grip from the very first sentence: “When the clock strikes midnight on his 25th birthday, Harry is having a threesome with a werewolf and a vampire.” (chef’s kiss!) and it didn’t let me go. We have a reluctant and grumpy Veela Harry, an over-the-top Draco, summer vacation vibes, a magical yacht, wooing with a hot air balloon (and more!), plus an absolutely delightful non-monogamous background Romione. Gah!!!

Of Magical Beings Being - Magic by @rockingrobin69 Drarry, E, 30k

What’s actually magic here is Robin’s writing. It’s… wait, I don’t think I have words for how rich and full this world is, how special! There’s pining and soft angst and an unreliable narrator and exes to lovers, but somehow all that doesn’t even begin to describe what this story is. It’s witty and fascinating and soft and playful. It’s about loving the other person so much that you do the wrong thing because you think that’s what they want, even though it hurts you. It’s about manifesting them in everything you do until they come back. It’s about Love, about Happiness. It knocked the breath out of me. It’s unbearably lovely.

Winner takes it all by @skeptiquewrites Drarry, E, 41k

This fic is absolutely devastating in a sort of gentle way. My heart broke a million times for this wonderful, hardworking, cornered Draco – who’s looking after his mum – as well as for a whole bunch of beautifully written side characters. The story starts with a bet, and from there, it unravels with Tee's razor-sharp writing, infused with nuance that makes the narrative incredibly rich and undeniably real. If you're in the mood for a cathartic cry, followed by a sweet, happy ending, don't walk – run to this fic!

Neige LeBlanche first time he sees Crewel daughter during an event where RSA and Princess Academy have to merged, he sees in his opinion a beautiful magpie in a crowd of colorful song birds as she the only one who wore a black dress with gold trimming and a red shawl ( Eva dress from dmc )

What he didn't know she already have someone in mind and he go to NRC ( a lie so she don't have to interact a RSA student much for good some reason )

When he sees you it's like looking at those crushes in the coming of age movies

You're adjusting your cape-jacket and he’s seeing this whole moment in slow motion

I imagine Neige is new to the feeling of attraction

So all he’s registering is that he’s suddenly really hot

And he really wants to hear the sound of your voice

So he’ll make his way over to you

Completely oblivious to the parting crowd at the Winter ball

You’re hard to miss anyway but he just has tunnel-vision

He introduces himself when he gets to you who conveniently just finished speaking to someone

“Good evening, I’m Neige Leblanche from the Royal Sword Academy. I just wanted you to say you're looking lovely today.”

“Oh, well thank you, sir. I’m (Y/n) Crewel of the Princess academy.”

You turned to walk away only for his chimelike voice to beckon you back

“I appreciate the gesture, Leblanche but I’m already scheduled to dance with–”

You look across the room and in a perfect world

You continue with “Vil” who has met eyes with you and quickly excuses himself to stand at your side

But the world is not and your father’s not an idiot

“My father Divus Crewel.”

Beforehand he will gush about how he worries you’ll drift as you age from him and that he wants to savor these moments with you

And of course you want to soothe your poor father

So you agreed to dance with him for every dance into the night

With your matching colors of gold black and red you proudly stand as icons for Night Raven and Princess Academy

And even when he wants to squeeze in a dance while you and your father are taking a break

Crewel will shoo you off with a task to refill his cup while he talks down the student

“See here, pup. Your plenty fine as a candidate to date my daughter but I will not sit idly by as you try to sweep her off her feet–”

“Oh okay, uhm Sir–”

“Quiet pup if you must question me, than you need to learn what I wil allow.”

While he’s off lecturing the RSA student

One of your lurking bachelors sweeps in and takes you to the dancefloor

Prime suspects are Vil Schoenheit, Malleus Draconia, Jade Leech, and oddly enough Idia Shroud

Malleus was reasonably waiting

“May I ask for this dance Child of Crewel, I’d be honored.”

Vil is smooth

he's used to doing this seeing as you are childhood friends

“Figured we finally get a dance in before your father returns.”

Jade is cordial about it but he’s so suave in the way he cuts off some lingering bachelor to guide you to the dance floor

“I’ve been wanting to steal you away. Won’t you indulge me for a bit?”

But Idia is a special case

You were sent to the snack table to get drinks but guess who’s also just chilling by the snacks

“Idia, it's good to see you. You look incredibly dashing tonight.”

He’s blushing really hard and his hair is flaring pink

“T-thanks.”

You two will stand in silence before he pushes out of his comfort zone

“S-so d-do y-you want to dance?”

“Thought you’d never ask.”

Idia might get away with it as long as he freaks out and runs as soon as the music breaks

But should a creep of confidence trickle in

He’s going to be the victim of Crewel’s vengeful glare

And the curious gaze from the envy that is born in Neige’s heart

But hey it was worth it to feel your hand and waist in his hands

“Big Brother! You got to dance with them after all!”

“Y-yeah. Turns out she-she is better than an otome game.”

From then on either your father jumps back in or you wave him off to dance with your Night Raven bachelors

Leaving Neige to welcome this feeling of jealousy

Just blacklisted a couple fandoms, just cause I wasn't interested, and got to thinking about how much I genuinely unironically fucking love this website. I've never been on any other platform that gives me this degree of control over what I see - by letting me control who I follow, giving me block abilities, letting me make a list of tags that don't interest me, and more. Yes, some changes that have been made didn't suit me, but I'm sure they suited some percentage of the user base or prospective user base, or else they wouldn't have been made. Even the new dash only took a few days to get used to, and to me the change is a net neutral. Yeah, the tumblr live icon at the bottom is irritating, and I wish the NEW would go away, but I appreciate the snooze for 30 days and again, a layout change can be gotten used to pretty quick.

And then I got to thinking about how many people here seem to virulently hate this website, and it honestly makes me sad. Every time a change is made, some number of folks go off the deep end, screaming how much they hate it, abusing staff, saying they'll leave, harassing other users who say they like it or don't mind it. It's gotten to the point that I'm genuinely afraid to make a post about liking Tumblr, like it's A Cool Kid (tm) marker to ~hate it~ and some bizarre form of virtue signaling to complain about it as loudly as possible every time there's a change. Then there's the HOW DARE THEY ASK FOR MONEY as if websites...don't need money to run...and again abuse piled on other users "don't you have better ways to spend your money shouldn't you support charity blah blah blah" and like. Look. This is a service I use and appreciate. Services need money to exist because capitalism. And I hate capitalism as much as it's possible to hate anything but I'm stuck living with it, so yes, I will vote for something I enjoy using and want to continue using with my dollars, while also trying to support other causes I believe in, and getting myself some cute things and sugary desserts to stave off the morbs, and buying my kids the things they want, and, and, and.

And then the newest thing unrolls, and a quarter of the userbase flips out THIS WEBSITE IS THE WORST I'LL NEVER GIVE IT MONEY STAFF GO DIAF IF THIS ISNT UNDONE IM LEAVING FOR REAL

And buddy. If you're saying that.

Real talk.

Why the FUCK would they want you to stay? What possible reason have you given them to accommodate you? Your data takes up server space, you refuse to chip in a penny to support the service, you're threatening their employees... if this was a fucking Denny's they'd have called the fucking cops on you, "yeah I agree that ACAB but you threatened the maitre d with a butter knife and refused to pay for your meal after eating and told the waiter to 'kys' so you didn't leave us much choice..."

Basically.

I love Tumblr.

But ngl, sometimes I hate the people here.

Tentative rip name: Initial Deluxe - I've just raced on this Course before

This is another recent one - as recent as just the beginning of this month, to be precise. And if you're keeping up with the channel, I don't really blame you for missing it: it was uploaded right after the conclusion of a day-long mini event in Fisher-Price Day on the 29th, and just a few hours before the way-too-big Goomba Got Back Day event - squeezed in the middle alongside just a half dozen other rips. Frankly I was almost about to skip this one to focus more on catching up with the prior events, yet...people in the SiIvaGunner Discord server were absolutely enamored with this rip in particular. And after giving it a shot, its immensely easy to see why - Initial Deluxe (I've Just Raced on this Course Before) was an absolute delight of a surprise that I can't believe wasn't given more fanfare.

Honestly, before the rip's creator was revealed, I was partially convinced this was another collaboration project in disguise, similar to Patched Plains Fusion Collab - yet if it were to be any one ripper to take on this wide variety of different musical styles to rearrange, I suppose it WOULD indeed be Madinstance. The guy's not a new face around here at all, and his skills in arranging are damn near unrivalled: Fell From a High Place (Reprise), M-O-O-G City, Every Mob Wants to Rule My World, and so many more...you'll notice, though, that all three examples I used here are all made in reverence of the same game: Minecraft. Having talked with Madinstance myself before, he strikes me as someone who's most willing to go all-in if it means being able to pay respects to something he truly adores and cherishes - like Minecraft, like Plok and other Follin-composed games. What Initial Deluxe (I've Just Raced on this Course Before) signals to me, is that this feeling of respect also extends to the Mario Kart series.

Released earlier in November, the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Booster Course Pass has brought Mario Kart back into discussion for a lot of Nintendo fans - both in the valid criticism against its graphical quality, but also in reverence and celebration of just how well done several of the track remasters were done. Since Mario Kart DS, part of Mario Kart's identity has become to celebrate the race tracks that built the series' legacy to what it is today - which the Booster Course Pass amplifies a hundredfold. Initial Deluxe (I've Just Raced on this Course Before) thus feels like a celebration of a celebration - a lovely, heartfelt medley of musical styles from all the different Mario Kart games represented within Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. All the sections are primarily based on one notable track featured in each game - Neo Bowser City from Mario Kart 7, Cheese Land from Mario Kart Super Circuit, and so on, and all the picks feel like they were chosen with utmost care to truly represent the vibe each game's soundscape holds. As a Mario Kart Wii-kid myself I certainly feel very represented with the choice made!

All of that isn't even touching on the joke being adapted onto these various Mario Kart soundscapes - the iconic Eurobeat song Deja Vu from the anime series Initial D. A song long associated with the love of driving and racing at high speeds, it now takes on a new meaning when associated with all of these games, that together raised generations of kids into becoming fans of high-octane driving - its a meeting that felt destined to happen, and each style renders the song in such refreshingly high quality. The styles feel like so much more than just setdressing, as tons of flavor is injected from each one: from the lighthearted whistles of Mario Kart Double Dash!!, to the rawness of Mario Kart Super Circuit's compressed instrumentation, to the elements the Mario Kart Wii segment takes from tracks like its Options menu music... Initial Deluxe (I've Just Raced on this Course Before) is such a whollistic, dense and wonderful celebration of all that Mario Kart is and has become, all to the tune of one of the internet's most beloved pieces of racing music.

okay but like, when and WHY did people stop doing these ? omg i love so many things its not even funny. a few important ones are waluigi (special interest), sonic the hedgehog (special interest AND hyperfixation (omg please kill me)), art (like, as a general thing, but particularly visual) and you WILL find me randomly posting oh-so-passionately about something ive never even mentioned before.

i do animation and illustration but that's over on my art blog. also all my animations are WIPs. you probably won't find anything other than a few weird lip syncs from when i was like 11 (i got into animation because of gacha life and animation memes). most of my art is sonic atm lol.

MILES 'TAILS' PROWER!!!! he's been my favourite sonic character since i was little!!!! except for that brief period where it was amy because i found out tails was a boy and i, as a 7-year-old girl who had just learned about misoginy, decided amy was better because she was a girl. and that briefer period where it was cream because she had confetti in sonic dash.

my favourite iterations of him are scu tails, classic tails and sonic boom tails!!! i h/c him as autistic, having anxiety, low self-esteem but also being really cheerful and nonchalant about a lot of stuff. i enjoy trans tails of all kinds, but i believe in cis gnc tails.

NON-BINARY ICON!!!! TOP SURGERY GUY!!!! WALUIGI!!!! call me thomas jefferson cause i have an entire binder on this guy. waluigi is THE blorbo from my spin-off-party-shows. i got into him because 'hahahaha! it is the funny garlic man's funny rose partner!' and that became 'they could marry me and i'd say yes on the basis that we'd get to see each other everyday, even if i only love him as a friend.
