Hey anon, a very good question!
Yeah, you really can boil it down to the fact that I think he's a cool villain. I generally like the villains more in things. I always have, even when I was small. They just always struck me as more fun to read about or watch. Especially the ones with the really overly theatric antics and aesthetic. It makes them fun. (Also, the tendancy, especially in children's media, to have the villains constantly doing some dramatic evil laugh always made it seem to me like they were having more fun than everyone else...). I also always thought they get to be the more interesting things, they get to be the vampires and ghosts and mad scientists. I've never envied a hero being a normal human with a strict moral compas. I have envied villains with wild powers who simply blow up their problems. And of course, without the villain being villanous, would there even be a story? No. Say thank you to the villains for your favourite tales.
As for Sauron specifically, he fits the above. He's dramatic. He looks like he's having fun being awful. I want to be a shapeshifter/vampire/werewolf/necromancer/ruler of all things/demigod goddamnit!
But he also hits on something else that I'm a complete sucker for in stories. I love fall stories. In fact, I love anything that involves a character switching sides, but a fall is always more interesting to me than a redemption. I love to watch someone get worse. I love to watch them get what they wanted and lose it or throw it away. I love a good bit of hubris. Of course, we don't get to see Sauron's fall. It's never described, not even sketched out. But at the same time, whenever you read Tolkien's writings about Morgoth it's always very "and he was always awful, just the worst, terrible guy, probably spits on babies or something". His writing about Sauron always seems to contain a little nugget of "he wasn't always like this, in fact his evils are inspired by what were once his virtues". It invites you to think about his character. There's hidden layers in there that we are free to imagine and explore. And it's made all the more interesting by the fact that our order loving Maia chose to serve chaos and change itself, which is seemingly contradictory, though Tolkien does explain it by his being attracted by the decisiveness and power of Morgoth. It's just fascinating how much there is hiding behind the villain who never really appears on the page very much, even when he is The Big Bad TM.
This isn't even getting into his other kind of falls, meaning his defeats. He's terrifying and powerful but put him in a fist fight or on the beach and he's going to end up disembodied or almost so. He's a bit not that impressive under all that power.
Over all, he has everything that I enjoy in a character and I just think he's fun.

I'm a huge Daemond shipper but I like my content to be toxic with non con elements I'll be honest.
In the show , Aemond is very awkward and even borderline scared when face to face with the whore at the brothel so the concept of Daemon using Aemond's uncomfortable, sexual insecurities to both humiliate and degrade him is top tier perfection!.

I do love a good sweet fic, but I gotta say...there's something about the toxic vibes that just hits different. And especially with Daemon/Aemond because their fates are so tragic, their souls so entwined. There's such a fine line between love and loathing, between admiration and envy. I think they both find it easier to lean into their anger. And honestly? I think they both get off on it.
I can just imagine them being in the same castle at some point during the Dance, maybe Winterfell or Storm's End or somewhere in the Riverlands. And blows have been dealt by both sides, they're both deeply hurt and filled with rage. But they're here on this sort of neutral ground, as it were, having agreed not to harm one another and exchanging seething glances from across the room.
And then, late at night, one of them goes to the other's chambers.
I feel like it would be Aemond. At this point in time, Daemon isn't quite as reckless as he was in his younger years. Aemond, however, still has his moments of pure, unbridled chaos, especially when near the Rogue Prince. He goes to Daemon's chamber, dagger in hand and though he's uncertain of his own intentions, he can't seem to stop himself.
Imagine his shock when he finds his uncle isn't abed. Instead, he's waiting for Aemond.
Both have blades, and skillful as they are, both manage to strike their targets, resulting in tattered clothes and a few bloody slashes, though none are deep enough to be of any concern. Soon, the blades are forgotten and it becomes something far more primal, all fists and teeth. They're on the floor, Daemon on top of Aemond, his hands around his throat. And Aemond all but whimpers.
This is where he wants to be.
Despite the betrayal, the cruelty, the war...in this moment, all they want is each other.
There is nothing soft in their touches. Every kiss is claiming, and by the end of the night, they'll both be covered in bruises. Aemond, admittedly, sporting more than Daemon, and he'll cherish every ache. Every reminder of the agonizing pleasure given him by his uncle.
OKAY SORRY I GOT REALLY DISTRACTED.
I 1000% agree Aemond definitely loves to be degraded (he also loves to be praised, but humiliation just hits all the right spots). I think he has a lot of deeply rooted shame because of the way he was raised in the Faith. Not to mention Aegon took him to a brothel when he was so young. He has a lot of complex feelings around sex.
I love the idea that Daemon plays with that. Daemon loves making his nephew blush. He loves watching how shy he gets, batting his lashes as he sinks to his knees. Aemond shivers every time he's called "nephew" or, his personal favourite, "boy". Especially if he says it in High Valyrian.
The way Daemon would whisper in his ear, gripping his silver hair to the point of pain. "Do you like that, Taoba? Do you like when your prince uses you as he wishes?"
In terms of bottom Aemond, I felt similarly until I saw ep10. Everything changed after this scene:
He's so primal. His movements are almost feline and he's so supremely confident. As much as I love bottom Aemond, I can't stop thinking about dom Aemond...I'm really tempted to write some fun Aemond/reader things...

I have more fics than oneshots lmao but I’m also liking the idea of writing shorter stories within an established world (which is my plan for my Javier Peña fics) and doing shorter oneshots after a story is completed (I have some of those planned out already for my Din Djarin fic and I’m so excited)

If so, why? both my bucky fics (which are currently only on ao3)…I don’t want to say they’ve been discontinued, but I tend to write what I’m watching, and I haven’t had a marvel binge in a while so I’ve been writing more Pedro stuff. that being said, I’m not abandoning them completely! 25 Do you post your writing as soon as you finish it, or do you schedule it to come out at a specific time/day? usually as soon as I finish it. I edit myself, and find if I stare at something for too long I start to pick it apart, so I just put it out into the universe and call it a day

We all know Zemo is a baron, but like... we don’t know how powerful baron’s are in Sokovia. We also don’t know pretty much anything about his childhood or rise to power. I am a firm believer that he’s been ever so slightly unhinged even when he was still just a normal dude, so this is him deciding “you know what, I’m about to climb my way up the Zemo family ladder however I need to,” This, in my mind, is the epitome of fresh faced, 18 year old, canon Zemo ready to go fuck some people up for power.
If Music Be The Food Of Love arranged by David Dickau
During his rise to power, still just a normal dude, Zemo falls in love with his wife. I’m a big believer in the fact that, because Zemo was raised as royalty, he knows a whole lot of pretentious shit like Shakespeare and recites it to his partner to be romantic. The line “Though yet, the treat is only sound, sure I must perish by your charms unless you save me in your arms,” is what he used to woo her early in the relationship. So cute, it would be terrible if something bad happened to her...

This one is more of a scene I get in my head. It’s a Christmas tune, and I can see him, his wife, and their infant going to their first Christmas market as a family in Novi Grad. Just... walking from stall to stall, giggling at the performers, eating the food, buying little gifts for the baby to remember the occasion. It’s a calm before the storm.

Daemon Irrepit Callidus is Zemo’s descent into madness. From this point on, he slowly loses his softness. The tone of the songs is often much more modern, pulling away from his roots as a baron and man of high status and leaning into something more gritty for much of the Civil War era in the playlist. He has descended into hell and he believes there is no turning back from here.
Songe d’Automne performed by The White Star Orchestra
Reportedly (by Harold Bride, surviving Jr Telegrapher who was washed off the deck as the ship sank) this was the last song the orchestra played as the Titanic sank. Zemo is going nuts. ‘Nough said.

This song, along with a few more, is an outlier in the Civil War era. It represents his reasoning for what he’s doing. I imagine this song is the feeling he has after he listens to his wife’s last voicemail. He’s doing everything for her, burning a whole superhero organization to the ground so that he can assure nobody else has to live through what he did, but he can’t deny that a part of him wishes he could just bring her back no matter how illogical that is.
How Does A Moment Last Forever (Music Box) from Beauty and the Beast
This is, again, a softer moment. He looks back on the time he spent with his family and tries to keep it safe in his mind. It anchors him to reality and keeps him focused on his goals. The end is coming soon in his mind, so he clings as hard as he can to those remaining memories of peace.
Dies Irae arranged by Giuseppe Verdi
He sets the Winter Soldier loose murders all the remaining soldiers in the Hydra base on his day of reckoning. Yeah, that’s basically it, it’s just hype music as he has his big moment.

Now, this one is more speculative, but I feel like Zemo will have a minor change of heart. he won't suddenly be a morally straight good guy to the bone, but I think he’s seriously rethinking his ideology and at some point, he might find a way to let go of a lot of the pain and remorse he’s been carrying around.

This song, in my mind, takes place at the Sokovian memorial. Zemo is there and he’s so tired of running and fighting and grieving. He just wants to be okay again but he doesn’t know how to. He has this mental moment where he’s asking his deceased father for help and yet the memory (ghost?) of his father, who he resented for most of his life, isn’t helping him straightforwardly. He has to figure it out for himself in the end. This line speaks to me most. “No more giants waging wars. Can’t we just pursue our lives, with our children and our wives? Till that happy day arrives, how do you ignore...”
and finally...
Do Not Stand at My Grave and Weep arranged by Laura Farnell
Of all the songs on this list, this one was the only one I was absolutely certain of including and I knew it had to be the last song no matter what else I included. Its contents, a famous poem by Mary Elizabeth Frye, could refer to either Zemo or his family. In the case that he visits the monument, it could be the feeling he gets there. Finally, he knows that his family is somewhere better, not buried under the rubble of his home. He’s finally free.
If he dies at the end of the series though, it takes on a whole new meaning. It’s about him, how he isn’t trapped by his mortal body anymore. He’s now everywhere, both a constant reminder to the world of the atrocities committed in Sokovia and a testament to how powerful a father’s love for his family can be. Once again, he’s finally free to reunite with those he loves, but this time it’s he who isn’t truly dead so long as people heed his life as a warning.

. a lot lmaooo. i’ve written for bap, vixx and monsta x on other sites but we don’t need to talk about that. i have a couple of drabbles for seventeen and ateez but they’re mostly unfinished, though maybe i’ll revive them at some point.

3. how long have you been writing?
i think i first tried writing fanfic 5 or 6 years ago, mainly because the groups i liked all had crazy concepts they never fully explored. i took a very long break since then and only started writing regularly about 6 months ago.
4. on which platforms do you post your stories?
just tumblr for now. my friend and i have one chapter of an nct fic somewhere on ao3 and haven't updated in 2 years so.
5. what is your favourite genre to write?
sci fi and fantasy. it doesn't have to be high fantasy or super elaborate world-building, but it's nice when i can kind of ignore the laws of reality. angst is up there too.
6. are you a pantser or a planner?
definitely a planner. or at least, most times. i like writing notes, and also like to flesh out all the characters before i make them do anything. some things like specific scenes i just write on the fly, but there's some sort of structure set before i start writing anything. (never forget the flowchart for at dawn.)
7. one shot or multichapter?
gonna be honest, multichapter does not do well with engagement on here. i tried it with 5 minutes and it was a mess in terms of planning and keeping everything coherent. my fics are just one shots with chapters i guess.
8. what is the perfect chapter length in your opinion?
10-20k one shots
9. what is your longest published story?
at dawn, 30k
if shadow was prose and not a screenplay, it'd likely be 50k.

at dawn lmao. i also had a lot of fun with act 3 of shadow. act 1 and 2 were a pain.

criminal jaemin. short and sweet, and not a typical damsel in distress

doyoung's always hot even if he's not the main character, even if i don't try to make him hot. it's just my personal agenda manifesting i think. i always fall back on this particular sentence structure: " it bit at the exposed skin of your hands, seeped through the thin fleece of your sweater until you felt frozen all over." like?? i omit the "and" where you expect it. in terms of characters, they're usually more dialogue-driven than they are visually driven. unless it's shvdy.

1/? simply because you have the most galaxy brain thoughts ever,,, what do you think would've happened if they waited until s5 to reveal sergio and andrés were (half)brothers?
i do know that when my fam started watching lcdp at first i was so put off. like i watched ep 1 and the prof creeped me out. ""berlin"" creeped me out. e v e r y o n e creeped me out. and i was cringing so hard becz of the short lived romance angle with alison parker. i literally did not watch s1 at all xcept for like sneak peeks. highlights being the scene where berlin discovers monica is alive and does his dramatic door by door thing? that was so SUSPENSEFUL even tho i had no idea what was going on. DOMINGO DE RESURECCION remains forever iconic.
2/? And OF COURSE the group bella ciao dance when they hit earth (hahah i thought the banda were actually like a "found family where they all love each other LOL") i am a SUCKER for found family. but anyhoo when i properly got intrigued was s2 when tokyo was kicked out (the music from that scene is still my favourite) it's just so dramatic..!! why am i telling u all this again? right, i haven't slept a wink and it's nearly 7 am pls forgive me if these rambles make no sense. i have a point with this.. i'm going somewhere
RIGHT. so when the fam actually rewound the ep cz i wanted to know WHY berlin did that (didn't fully realise how batsht crazy he can be), the russian roulette scene played. and pedro's acting. MAN. and like just that ep they made a point of showing us these flashbacks where sergio and andrés hug....

Firstly, I believe Andres/Sergio would be the biggest LCDP ship if the writers were evil enough to wait until s5 to reveal that they’re brothers asdfasdf. They’re already the two most popular male characters anyway.
It’d be especially crazy because it’s not like they tell the actors these things beforehand either. So that means there’d probably be a Serdres vs Berlermo vs Serquel fight every 5 minutes. I mean, even if not everyone agrees on everything in the lcdp fandom, it’s the most “peaceful” one I’ve ever been in because no character really gets in the way of any other ship (like even with helermo and berlermo there’s no true conflict since Andres is dead). But with Serdres in the mix?? CATASTROPHE. Everyone out here writing essays about how much of a bastard/bitch/homewrecker/motherfucker that Andres or Sergio or Martin or Raquel is. Never a moment’s peace!! so basically, a regular fandom lmao.
Then when we find out they’re brothers, it goes from catastrophe to Apocalypse. Suddenly serquel and berlermo have the upper hand. Everyone would double down and harass the crew/cast into whatever’s going on. Plot-wise, everything is the same though, just without Andres calling Sergio “hermanito.” Fandom however, would be a minefield! And I’m glad that’s not the case because I’d probably be an unfortunate serdres shippers XD No joke, my mother and I thought they were a couple in S1. So bullet dodged!
Secondly: haha, everyone creeped me out in S1 too, especially Berlin, I hated him, but thinking back, I think I mostly hated the fact that I didn’t hate him as much as I should have. I’ve made peace with it now but oh boy, was he a controversial figure in my head. I actually like the professor on sight though! IDK why, maybe because I thought his plans were cool or because of Alvaro’s delivery. I was afraid of an Alison Parker romance thing too- like, I do feel like she had a storyline that got dropped, but that part was quite cringey and overall unnecessary to the plot. Same with Ariadna, which was even cringier and even Less necessary to the plot.
Domingo de resurrecion was iconic though yes! And even with all that said, I genuinely enjoyed parts 1 and 2 because it was so different from anything else I’d seen. Not content wise, but maybe tonally? IDK, they were just really bold with a lot of things, like being objectively unafraid of having the protagonists (plural because all of them did LMAO) do objectively shitty things. Really kept me in suspense from beginning to end!
I’m usually a big fan of found families too! The funny thing is, then banda never struck me as a “family” until season 3. In 1 and 2, I was wondering what felt different about this show; then it hit me that these people remained colleagues to the end. Like, they backstabbed each other (repeatedly) and everyone was quite selfish, and only the bonds that were already there stuck. They were the opposite of a found family LOL But I think by S3, they went down the found family route and I didn’t mind because it makes quite a lot of sense for them to feel that bond after the Mint heist and almost dying/living together (and having witnessed 3 deaths together on the team). But I still doubt Berlin and Palermo were ever really part of this found family, with good reason XD

I’m rolling over how you watched the Tokyo expulsion scene before the Russian Roulette scene haha. Also yes, PEDRO. Berlin may have been “controversial” to me at first, but I became Pedro’s fan from day one! Also the Hug is probably what made me like Berlin (despite my determination to hate him rip) in the first place.
3/? ... and like now that i think about it... tokyo had real guts huh. like she KNEW berlin was close enough to el prof to know his name (fhshshs imagine if she'd heard andrés saying 'hermanito' it's unrealistic that she didn't TBH. i mean obviously they decided to make them brothers only towards the end but like in canon universe. how tf did andrés de 'i raised my bby brother since he was 12 and i'd actually die for him and his stupidly brilliant plans' fonollosa go 5 months without slipping up once and calling sergio hermanito. or like,,, i like to imagine sergio kinda gave him lots of leeway(?) sergio's a lil oblivious too but like i'm sure half of it is.. that's my dumbass older bro shut up i'm not being partial you all have city names .. andr-berlin, pass the salt. like OOF. + sergio also knew his big bro was dYiNG so like. i'm sure they were sneaking in some quality time (i hope they did 😭 gosh imagine if sergio really did not ever consider the possibility of andrés dying in the heist so he'd tell himself he needs to perfect the plan now & anyway he'll have enough time to spend w/ his brother post heist in philippines. and then ... that happened :/
Tokyo has guts in place of braincells you bet that she’d do something like this, consequences be damned XD I also think it’s unrealistic for Andres not to slip up, but I have a feeling nobody besides Tokyo really tried to spy on them in private. I headcanon that Andres instead slips up and does things like ruffle Sergio’s hair or adjust his tie when other people are around. I also think Tokyo was convinced that they were a gay couple when she saw them hug XD And if Sergio never went on to tell the banda that Berlin was his brother, everyone would be giving Palermo such awkward looks after Nairobi accused him of being in love with Berlin LMAO.
I agree! I also imagine Sergio giving Andres leeway because he’s just so used to interacting with his brother that way haha. So either he’d go out of his way to ignore Berlin in front of everyone else or IDK, borderline telepathically communicate with him. Not even “pass the salt” has to leave his mouth- Berlin just puts salt into his food and cuts it up for him, in front of everyone who’s just staring like O.O
I actually do think Sergio never considered the possibility of Andres dying in the heist because he was just that confident in his own plan. Plus, Andres was probably the one person he expected to survive. And a lot of it has to do with Sergio’s attachment to him + Andres’ own habit of downplaying any illness/injury over the years, which I think is safe to believe canon. He was really in no condition to be in the heist, let alone lead it. Just the fact that he needs to take those injections is a big sign that he shouldn’t be there, but Sergio didn’t catch it because he’s human and blinded by faith :’) So yeah, I think Sergio was planning to spend proper time with Andres in Palawan and at Toledo, they just settled for those little moments by the fireplace.
4/? what always also just GETS me in the feels is that el prof was shown to be this in control creepily calm dude who is miles ahead of everyone. + in the 1st Toledo class itself we see how detached,, like how impersonal he is, how professional - choosing frickin CITY NAMES?! no 'personal relationships' ? (after recruiting his older brother, a father son pair, and war cousins... oh sergio 😂 he's such a frickin nerd and i love him) but like the earlier seasons really emphasised how robotic and down right COLD he can be. it still sometimes bothers me that he put the button in the car. he lead the police to his own damn brother, his blood, who took care of him and adopted him and was terminally ill and like - UGH i try to rationalise that sergio is that cold and unbothered. or that he has strict morals. but it still bothers me becz that button really sort of tipped andres' already unstable sanity. like andrés tells denver someth like you've robbed my future and after that he just seems so much more suicidal and accepting that he can't get out of the mint alive - WHY SERGIO WHY. I KNOW THAT AT THAT POINT YOU BASICALLY DIDN'T KNOW ANDRÉS WAS GOING TO BE YOUR BROTHER YET BECZ IT WASN'T WRITTEN IN THE SCRIPT BUT WHYYYYY

I don’t think that cold aspect of Sergio went away in later seasons either; he just had more opportunity to show a more open side of himself + without Andres, he had to metaphorically leave his comfort zone without a safety net. But in earlier seasons, he really did seem heartless at times XD Then again, we can argue that the same goes for Andres.
To be fair, I didn’t feel sorry for Andres over the button thing lol, but once the brothers reveal happened and all of Alvaro/Pedro’s headcanons came out and we know everything Andres did for Sergio, it makes what Sergio did REALLY harsh. We really just have to explain it through Sergio’s strict morals and him believing this to be the best non-fatal punishment for Andres, who at that point had convinced him he killed a hostage. And because he knew the television interview was coming up, maybe Sergio assumed Andres would use it to “clear” his name anyway. And empathy isn’t one of Sergio’s strong suits either, so through that lens, I can rationalize it.
Also it was lowkey funny to me how Andres was there like DENVER MUST DIE until he found out Sergio put the button there, then he was like “oh hermanito, you and your practical jokes <3″
Still, like you said, Andres and Sergio weren’t brothers yet at this point. They were probably supposed to be lovers lmao and had a dysfunctional Hannibal Lecter x Will thing going on. But because they made #hermanos canon, that button moment just feels very out of place now, especially given how much the two genuinely love each other.
Guess we could also say that Sergio’s just generally kinda bratty with Andres XD Like, he knows no matter what, Andres would forgive him anything. That’s how I see it anyway!

honest opinion of Clarke?
Oof, Clarke’s a tough question. Can I have an easier question? LOL.
I’m conflicted on her, and have been since season 3. Sometimes I like her, sometimes I hate her.
I very very rarely like the main hero/heroine of anything. Most of the time, I actually loathe them. The tritagonist is usually my favourite - that is, the foil to the main character and the main character’s love interest/platonic life partner/whatever. The 100, is, of course, no different in that sense, because Octavia’s the tritagonist and I love her above all others (see post about the Soul as the Mirror of the Head and the Heart).
Clarke was, for me, an anomaly at first - she wasn’t my favourite, but she was bearable up until season 3. Then... Clexa happened. Which would’ve been fine as it goes, except it was nothing like what fandom had told me.
For context, I only started watching The 100 last year, in the hiatus between S4 and S5. There were two things that I knew about the show before I started watching: The reason I decided to watch, being Chai Hansen (Ilian), since I was in Shadowhunters fandom at the time and he was pretty, so I wanted to see more of his work, thus I watched some of his The 100 scenes on YouTube and went oh hey who is this badass Octavia chick he’s sleeping with who I want to know more about. And then of course, because I inhabited LGBTQ+ geeky online spaces, I also knew about Lexa’s death and the Bury Your Gays trope and how it destroyed a great sapphic love story, etc etc etc.
So when I headed into seasons 2 and 3, I was all ready to be righteously angry about the destruction of a beautiful love story, how dare all these awful things happen, and so on. But... the love story didn’t live up to the hype. At all. Not even a little bit. There were only a few episodes where Clarke wasn’t actively hostile towards Lexa in season 3, and even fewer where there was fondness followed by intimacy. Was there potential for a great love story? Sure there was. Had Lexa lived, they could have been a real badass power couple.
But it didn’t happen. That story was interrupted. At a time when there had only been a week or so when Clarke wasn’t hostile towards Lexa, and a mere number of days where she was passing fond of her. So the idea that Lexa’s death would be this oh so sad THE LOVE OF MY LIFE IS DEAD moment that Clarke is still carrying around six years later... just falls flat to me. Sure, Clarke could mourn what could have been, but she seemed to be mourning what was and there was precious little of that to mourn.
So from that moment on, the narrative of Clarke’s feelings about Lexa just didn’t match up to the reality of what I’d seen play out on screen, and it is from there on that my feelings on her were soured.
Season 4 was a bit of mixed bag, I appreciated some things about her, but I greatly disliked her colonial mentality vis-a-vis the Grounders. Plus her stealing the bunker, that was a wrong move. And then season 5, well... I’ve talked enough about that one.
Season 6... I’d really hoped that Clarke and Octavia could hang out from the start, because they were both hated at that point, but for some reason Bellamy’s calling the shots and by keeping Octavia on ice and taking Clarke to the ground against everyone’s desires, that didn’t happen. At least by the end of the season they were working together again, and understanding each other in a way I’d hoped Clarke would pursue in season 5 (because Octavia was totally ready for it in this handshake moment here in this post, Just Two Girls Against the World). Better late than never I guess.
All that said, I do think Clarke enjoys the power of leadership a bit more than people usually think. She’s tormented by her choices, sure, but she can’t help but take the job anyway (which differentiates her from Octavia - Octavia never liked power, and will avoid it if she can). We know this is one of Clarke’s deepest darkest secrets, because she argues with Mindspace!Maya about this in 6x07 - “You know what I think? You like being the saviour. You like playing God. You’re not so different from the Primes, you know.” Clarke keeps choosing power and choosing to lead, even when her track record for success is questionable. Then there’s also the case of other people do all of the work, but she pulls a lever at the end of the season and gets all the credit.
Now, this isn’t Clarke’s fault, per se. That’s how the narrative frames things. And well, you all know my feelings about how narrative frames things (going back to the post about zero-sum heroism again).
So, TL;DR version: If I rank the living characters from favourite to least favourite, Clarke falls solidly somewhere in the middle.

Hey! Just a random question but: I was wondering when you got into watching robron? As in what era and how did you find out and what were your first impressions of the characters?
Hi anon!! What a great question, I’m sorry in advance for this long post because it’s a complicated answer to give. Here’s my robron journey:
So I first found Aaron in 2011 or 2012, and it was originally from watching the soap awards. I remember they kept showing Danny and his sl with Jackson and I’m pretty sure Danny and/or that sl won some awards. It then made me go on to YouTube and start watching random clips of aaron and all the struggles he had. It was hard to watch but I was also somewhat going through something similar to him so it felt like an instant connection. So that was my first introduction to Aaron and I just sort of always kept him in my mind over the years.
Then comes robron, I remember seeing them come up on my dash somewhere in jan 2015. I was like aww Aaron’s got a new love interest let me have a look. So I watched all their sl together and I enjoyed them. But then Katie’s death happened and Robert was very manipulative around that time and it was all very angsty and horrible and somewhere in feb 15 I stopped watching because it was just too much angst for me to handle at the time.
So after that I kind of just let them go but i did see them on my dash very randomly. I specifically remember watching the scene where rob and chas save Aaron in the woods and Robert saying he cares and I thought aww that’s sweet they are getting somewhere. I don’t remember seeing anything of them again until the scene of Aaron in hospital and Robert talking to him in jan 2016. (Apparently Aaron getting injured is what brings robron back to me lol)
Then one fateful night of may 31st 2016, once again the soap awards, I refound my love for robron. I basically saw that Aaron had had his abuse sl and it broke my heart to even watch the clips but also made me want to watch because Danny just kills it! As well as seeing that robron were actually officially together? Wow magical! And dryan were up for the best partnership and I just remember being like I need to instantly watch them!!
So that night I watched the whole of abuse era up to the present time, I literally stayed up until 5am watching robron. That’s the power they had on me. I was literally on study leave for my exams at school but I stayed up until 5am watching robron slowly find their way back together. I will never regret it!! But anyway from that moment on I loved them, although it was a sad time to properly join the fandom because they then went on a 6 week break 😂
Also bonus facts, I watched robrons sl on YouTube but when ssw happened I started to watch emmerdale live and I haven’t stopped since! And so the first emmerdale ep I watched live was robrons ssw ep!! I only started to properly get involved in the fandom in jan 2017 because I was getting so excited for the wedding and I had to talk about it with someone. So I followed loads of robron blogs and started talking to people!! And that was my decent into complete obsession after that 😂
But yeah basically I have to thank my love for the soap awards and tumblr for allowing me to find robron and fall in love with them.
I loved Aaron from the moment I saw his character, he just had such depth to him and I just wanted to give him a big cuddle and for him to be happy. I don’t remember what my first impression of Robert was really, but I do know that he basically made me stop watching robron for a year and a half so you know it wasn’t the greatest of impressions! I’ve always had a favourite character in a ship and Aaron was that person for me but then when I started watching them properly I fell in love with Roberts character more and more each day!! I think having a friend I was talking to on here being the biggest Robert fan helped me fall in love with him but also Ryan is just so good that I couldn’t help it. And now I can confidently say that I love Aaron and Robert equally, both individually as characters and together as a couple and that’s the first time that I’ve ever loved both characters equally when it comes to a couple!! And I think that’s just one of the many reasons robron are so special to me! 💕💕💕

3. favorite line/scene you wrote this year
2019 is the year i rejoined fandom! i grew up reading and writing harry potter fanfic, took many-years break, and came back in january 2019, post-break-up, for the raven cycle and all for the game. so it’s really been a year of learning how to write again, learning how i like writing. it turns out i really like one-sentence paragraphs. here are some examples i can think of, i guess i do this style a lot, which i do unapologetically.

Something tugged inside Ronan and he stomped outside. He made his way towards the first field and just started walking, jacket forgotten, boots sliding easily through wet grass, skylight dimming, his breath coming out in shudders like smoke, and at some point Opal had come running out of a hedge or a tree or a rock, had run rings around him, had shown him all the stones she’d found that she thought looked like her opal, and he’d nodded, had accepted a stone in cold dry fingers, had felt it in his palm all rough texture against rough texture, had watched her bobbing head as she exhausted herself against the day, had looked at the wet grass curled around his boots, at the line of trees curling at the foot of the hill, at the dissipating clouds in the paling orange sky.

When Adam woke up it was to tight skin and dreams of his father towering above him, Adam on the ground, please stop please stop please stop and his left ear ringing – he touched it, vacant, elsewhere; it was to loud warring voices in his head and him, frowning, and not opening his eyes as he thought I overreacted, Gansey wasn’t saying – but also – I am broken and he knows he knows he doesn’t want me to break him too – and he swung a leg out of bed, and then the other, eyes still closed, and thought – I really don’t think that’s what he meant, this isn’t fucking logical Adam – but also – but ok we do know I’m manipulative and selfish and weren’t those the exact qualities Gansey’s afraid of – and then he opened his eyes and his skin was crawling and his father was walking towards him and he just wanted it to stop and he imagined smashing a glass into a wall and wished for a split second it was his father’s face, no, he wished it was his face – it was a little your fault, wasn’t it Adam? – and then he opened his eyes, stared, a little stunned, blood on his knuckles and the bathroom mirror shattered, glass dripping into the sink, and from somewhere far away Daniel’s voice, “Adam?”

There’s a couple of birds flying overhead, their calls to each other just loud enough to filter through the pounding in his head, and it sounds like the sky is singing, and then he can hear waves too, crashing against the sand he’s standing on, and it’s like he’s trapped in a soundscape that he hadn’t been listening to before – or maybe wasn’t able to hear – but suddenly it snaps back to him with a jolt of colour, and noise, and the understanding that he’s barely awake, that he’s standing right where his mother died, screaming at someone he doesn’t want to live without.
so, yeh, there’s that. but also here is a favourite single line i can think of, from (trc) sunlight:
This speech had been made to the sky, and Adam spent a while after he’d finished speaking wondering at the appropriateness of that. That someone the scale of Ronan could only fit into something as infinite and wondrous as the sky.
15. something you learned this year
ah man. idk. i spent a lot of this year digesting my own mental health / general life woes by reading and writing fanfic. so something i’ve learned. maggie s said in a writing seminar you can’t write about a problem you have if you haven’t solved it yet. i think about this a lot. i think about writing adam parrish grappling with the concept of anger, thinking of himself as a monster he can’t escape; neil josten unable to admit something’s wrong, unable to take the first steps in fixing what’s wrong in his brain chemistry. idk. maybe i was able to write these stories because i have, at least partly, dealt with my own issues with the concept of anger, with taking a step forwards in seeking help. maybe it’s because i’m in fandoms where we fucking love talking about our problems. which i think is a really really good thing. or maybe il reread these two stories in a few years’ time and think “hoo boy she really was still in the thick of it and had no idea eh”.
this was supposed to be what have i learned. i have learned that:
it is ok to use writing fanfic as a way to learn about yourself; but it can’t be everything
it is ok to use reading fanfic as a way to feel your emotions safely; but it can’t be everything
be yourself! that is what i have learned. the rest will follow.
24. favorite fic you read this year
my gosh well that’s not fair because i’ve read essentially the entire backlog of the trc and aftg top hits this year and then some. however, these are the ones that stuck out, that i’ll keep going back to (ignoring like the five you’ve all already read anyway):
(the raven cycle) Like Storms: this fic man… selectively mute adam meets gansey and ronan at college, and they in turn meet ghost!noah in a church and… i dont know my heart just Did Not Cope. i don’t know how to explain how special this one is, except to really emphasise that i spent this year really only reading fanfiction, and this is the one i’m choosing to recommend.
(harry potter) Away Childish Things: this broke me. it’s basically an excuse to have harry and draco deal with their traumas by meeting the younger version of each other, and figuring out shit they should have figured out already. it’s, genuinely, one of the most beautiful things i’ve ever read.

I was tagged by @ham-palpert and @halosboat to do this (thank you darlings!) and they had some great questions so I picked a few from each list to create a list of eleven. And yes, this is my third one but they are fun💕

✍🏻 What trope is your favourite to write?
Hate to say it but enemies to lovers. A healthy dose of sexual tension and angst before the love and fluff, always a winner.
✍🏻 What are your methods for getting rid of a writer’s block?
Writing drabbles. Working on something small and fun that doesn’t really mean anything or require a lot of thinking and plot helps me clear the cobwebs.
✍🏻 Do you consider tags necessary for fics or are they just spoiling the content?
Urgh, I have a serious love/hate relationship with tags. I completely and utterly understand why triggering tags need to used, people need to be safe, but I hate how I feel obliged to tag everything about my fic so people can decide if they are going to read a 40k fic based on a few, possibly out of context, tags. And yes, they are spoilers, sorry that’s a fact. Like my ridiculous fic has a big twist in it and I know I’m going to have to tag what it is because I will get so much shit if don’t and that really annoys me. Also, I think tags are good to be able to find fics again but some tags are completely unnecessary and no good to anyone. You don’t get tags on normal books or movies or tv shows. You get a summary or a trailer and you have to decide for yourself if it’s what you are interested in. People need to be more adventurous and less reliant on tags in my humble opinion.
✍🏻 Was there a fic that made you cry?
Not that I recall, but I don’t read much sad stuff and with happy stuff, I’m more fist bumping the air to myself in bed like the single loser I am than crying with happiness.
✍🏻 Are you participating in any exchanges/fests?
Yes! I’m doing an anon fic for the ridiculous fic exchange (I’m also a mod) which may include a controversial for the fandom trope (👀👀👀), then I’ve got a fluffy mpreg one planned, then my 28 proposals fest fic and then I have an idea for a fic for the royal fic fest which I am super excited about! Basically got the next nine months of fics planned out.
✍🏻 Have you ever been burned by a WIP that never updated? If so, describe that traumatic experience.
Yes!!! OK so there was a Narry fic ages ago where Harry was a secret admirer of Niall’s but like kinda lowkey stalking him from afar and it was a bit dark to be honest but I got hooked and the writer kept leaving little clues as to who the person might be in Niall’s life and then they stopped updating and then deleted it and I NEVER FOUND OUT WHO HARRY WAS!!!! It was very upsetting.
✍🏻 Speaking of WIPs, do you like writing (or reading) them? Why or why not?
Most of the time I avoid them, unless it’s a writer I know is pretty safe to depend on and regularly updates. I worry I’ll get burned AND I also have a shit memory so if they don’t update pretty regularly I forget what’s happened. I’ll be releasing my ABO fic as a WIP but I’m writing the entire thing first so I know it’s good to go.
✍🏻 Do you enjoy writing smut scenes? Does it make you feel super awkward? Do you need to have a cigarette afterwards?
Hmmmm. This is hard one (no pun intended). I don’t think I’m very good at writing smut for a start. I read other smutty fics and I’m like ‘jesus, i need a cold shower that was so good’ and I don’t have the talent to make mine like that yet. I do, however, like writing smut in the sense that I love writing the chemistry between the characters and having them be intimate and tender with each other or just go to town and be wild with it, depending on their dynamic and the plot. I hate it because it takes me so long to write a scene because you have to be like ‘shit where was his hand? Are they still in their underwear? Would that position be possible on a sofa? etc etc etc and it can be tedious. I also always want to try and be at least somewhat original somewhere with a smut scene with the way I write it, but there really are only so many ways you can write ‘they fucked’.
✍🏻 Do you click through the recently updated list on AO3 or read exclusively fic recs? Or a bit of both?
I’ve only been on tumblr since last summer, so before that, I literally just had to trawl through Ao3. If I found a fic I liked, I’d then go through the writers back catalogue, then start again with the most recently updated. Now, I go pretty much off fic recs on tumblr. I bookmark a fic I want to read when I see an interesting mood board or people are raving about a fic. my bookmarks are ridiculous at the moment because I’ve not been reading nearly as often since I changed my job and no longer travel for an hour there and back every day.
✍🏻 Are you someone who comments on the fics you read (and liked)?
I’m so bad at this. I don’t know what to say other than ‘i loved this it was cute/hot’. I know I should comment more because I know how lovely it is to receive them, but I guess I’m just too self-conscious about it or something stupid.

I would love to one day compare and contrast the boys' solo music videos in detail. For now, what's your personal ranking of fave to least fave?
What a great ask anon - thanks so much. After much watching and careful consideration I have my rankings and have learned much about my own taste in music videos in the process.
Here we have 1D’s solo music videos ranked from ‘this is made just for me’ to ‘actively unpleasant to watch’
Just Like You: I don’t think it’ll surprise anyone who reads my blog that I love the way this video engages with the world. It’s the only video from a One Direction member that has the word ‘communist’ or engages sympathetically with women’s experience of sexual harassment. Using newspapers is a great idea for a lyric video anyway, but in this case it’s not just about the aesthetics, but creating an aesthetic that underscores and adds to the song. I love everything about it - the choices of articles, the little drawings, the use of silhouettes. As we get towards the bottom of the list it’ll become clear that a lot of music videos just aren’t made for me. This video very much was.Kiwi: Puppies! Beautiful Baked Goods! Harry L’s amazing outfits! Harry S hamming it up! This video is a joy of a concept brilliantly executed. If I can’t shake the feeling that it celebrates the aesthetics of gentrification, I can be distracted by cute children.
Back to You: So if I was being totally honest with myself this video would probably be first. I’ve watched it more often than any of the other videos (possibly more than the other videos put together). My formative experience of music videos is of sitting on my friend’s couch in the late 1990s and early 2000s talking shit while music TV was on in the background. This feels like the sort of video I would have enjoyed then - endlessly watchable but you don’t have to worry about missing anything. Charm and a sense of place is really all you need. (I also have a theory that this is the music video that has done most for the song of any 1D solo single. Back to You has done noticeably better on youtube than streaming).
Miss You: I thought this would be the one that I couldn’t really defend. That when it came down to it all the ranking of this music video would show was that I’m a sucker for Louis and pink triangles. But you know what? Louis effectively communicates both joy and loneliness - and that’s so much more interesting than communicating that you’re staring into the middle distance and singing seriously. I don’t think this video is effective as it should be and I can’t figure out why (I think it’s about the lack of energy and specificity outside Louis’ crew in the crowd scenes. Or maybe it’s the whiteness, which I think undermines the sense of place and makes it much harder to invest in this group of men’s fun). But emotions and pink triangles cover many sins.
Still Got Time: This video has so much energy, partly because they manage to make the party full, but I think the retro effects work really well. To me it’s a great example of how if something is grounded everything else works better. The surrealness of the monkey and alligator at the end is so much more effective, because what went before established the world of a 90s house party.
BeFoUr: See I’m easy to please - set a music video somewhere that feels like it exists and have Zayn smile and I’m like ‘great work’.
Get Low: This one is pretty odd - there are bits that feel like they’re making sure that this is a music video and they really get in the way of the looseness of the concept. The choreographed dance routine following them around and Liam’s serious singing face don’t really work at all. But then at the end they sing with the children and Liam smiles and everything gets lots better.
Slow Hands: What I have learned from this ranking is me and Niall have very different music video aesthetics. This is by far my favourite of his. He’s so much more charming when he’s goofing around recording than when he’s pretending to have feelings.
Sign of the Times: This one is hard, because I can see a good video in here. There are moments where Harry conveys an emotional reaction to the situation that feels real (when he looks at his shaking hand at 0:51, his joy at 2:51, and some of the body positioning and expressions towards the end), but for most of the video it just looks like he’s dangling on the end of the rock. Solid concept (although probably one that would always have too much middle distance staring for me) badly executed.
Just Hold On: I really hate the cheesy special effect when they go from place to place and I think this video relies on a level of interest in heterosexuality that I just don’t have. But this video is much higher up the list than I expected it to be. The couple in this video look like they’re having fun in each other’s company. Quite a few 1D members could learn about how to communicate desire from the actors in this video.
Dusk Till Dawn: It’s very well done (and has a great sense of place), but epic storytelling isn’t my favourite form of music video. And my extreme aversion to the police shooting anyone means I can’t enjoy the end (for all I like a clever heist).
Too Much to Ask: So this video almost has a sense of place for Niall to be sad in, but it just doesn’t quite get there. I really like the bits where he’s exploring London and riding on the tube. But the scenes where Niall is singing in a bedroom that couldn’t possibly be his bedroom and they’re all playing in another unidentified room really detract from the setting established in the London shots. Is Niall supposed to be staying over in the pub that has terrible decor? Why not establish some space that could believably his. He moves around London like someone who exists in that space, but the other locations undermine that.
I Don’t Wanna Live Forever/For You: These obviously have a job within the wider franchise and they both do that job well. I think I prefer the aesthetic of For You, but Rita Ora is very good at smiling and being charming while also singing a ridiculous over dramatic song in a dress. We’ll call it a tie.
This Town: Both the lyric video and the performance video are fine I guess. They’re sweet enough, except maybe the bit with the golf ball heart, which seems like a bit of a disturbing metaphor.
Strip That Down: Like the song, this video has the advantage to fully committing to how stupid it is. Give me somewhere that has no sense of aesthetics because it’s all neon and houseplants rather than bland rich people aesthetics any day. Also Liam smiles, which is so much preferable to his serious singing face. But it’s definitely not a music video that was made with me in mind. And the difference in clothing between the men and the women in the video is really tedious.
Like I Would: Some of the special effects are cool. I think the outfit Zayn is wearing is particularly impressive. But it’s so serious and the fact that Zayn and the female dancers are never in the same frame really emphasises the difference in the way men’s and women’s bodies
It’s You: The black and white cinematography make it very pretty, but it’s boring. Generic rich people is so not my aesthetic. I wouldn’t have made it all the way through if I wasn’t writing this post.
Pillowtalk: I really don’t like this video. I find the art school special effects tedious and the flowers particularly embarrassing. Also I’m trypophobic so I literally find the woman with spikes on her face unwatchable and have to close my eyes.
On the Loose: I really don’t like it. As well as being bland, the way it’s shot really dehumanises the woman in the song. The lyrics aren’t great anyway - men warning other men how awful women are isn’t my thing. But in the song she does things - in the music video because of the slow-mo and the framing she is reduced to an object and all she is doing is being looked at.
Bedroom Floor: This is essence of everything I hate in music videos. Bland rich people aesthetics, joyless sex and relationships and constipated middle distance staring as a way of conveying emotion. As if that wasn’t enough it promotes rape culture and is actively unpleasant to watch.

It is obvious from your writing that Magnus is your favourite and it's sad because while all writers have a favourite character, they don't let it affect their writing by being so biased.
So I currently have two new messages in my inbox. One, this. The other, a politely posed question about Simon’s sexuality and its interpretation in canon vs fandom. I wonder which is going to get the more productive response? 🤔 But anyway, two parts to this answer.
(This turned out to be a much more productive response than I anticipated, c’est la vie!)
1) To clear some apparent misconceptions, because I’ve had people complaining about Izzy being my favourite character, Magnus being my favourite character, JACE (?!) being my favourite character, you get the picture: yes, Magnus is my favourite character in the sense of, you know, HIS CHARACTER. He’s incredibly complex and well-rounded and so much fun to explore. Then why are (probably significantly) more than half of my fics written from Alec’s POV? Because he’s my favourite character in my ability to relate to him, to understand where he’s coming from, to see myself in him. That’s a very intimate thing, and it’s one of the things that makes me watch TV and read books. Relating to characters.
FWW is, by and large, ABOUT ALEC. Yes, about Alec and Magnus, obviously, but it follows his storyline, it’s mostly written from his perspective, and most major events centre around him. Him + another character, sometimes, yes, but he’s usually the common factor.
And in this fic - which is not written in the canon universe - Alec has spent most of his life being taught that Downworlders are disgusting and deserve everything they get from the Clave. A lot of the first twenty+/- chapters is him coming to the realisation that this is not the case, largely through his relationship with Magnus but also other Downworlders - Luke, Raphael, Maia, Simon, etc.
At some point, everybody in the world is exposed to something that makes them reconsider their beliefs. It’s just life. That’s what this story is about, from many sides. Alec reconsiders his beliefs about Downworlders. Magnus his opinions about (particularly the younger generation of) Shadowhunters - although not so much the Clave. Isabelle her opinions about the Clave’s officials. Simon about his place in it all.
None of these characters are perfect. All of them make mistakes. All of them say things that are supposed to make the reader go “…? Really? Was that necessary? Was that fair? Was that the best course of action?” Even *gasp* Magnus. Magnus’ own arc in this story is still in its earlier stages. He’s got plenty more mistakes to make and arguments to have and angst to go through before he’s done. As has everyone else.
I’m a little bewildered as to why a brief musing in which Alec reflects on how his prejudice against Downworlders affected his judgement of Simon in the past has stirred up this “OHMYGOD YOU HATE ALEC” thing. It boggles me. Especially as the follow-up scene stresses that Alec dealt with the situation well, and wasn’t blind-sided by prejudices, because, you know, we’re 29 chapters in, he couldn’t still be behaving as he was in chapter 1!
2) These kinds of messages are not productive. You know that. I know that. The mere fact that they’re on anon clues everyone into this. So, rather than rant at me for your own gratification, here’s a suggestion: BE CONSTRUCTIVE. IT MIGHT GET YOU SOMEWHERE.
For example: Hi Lu, I’m x chapters into y fic, and I’m still reading it because I like z. However, I noticed v scene/line, and I was wondering if you could explain why you wrote it, because I thought w. I’d like to hear your thoughts, because it squicked me/seemed out of place/seemed out of character/didn’t make sense etc.
I’m much more likely to respond to that in a helpful manner! I don’t know whether I give off the impression that I’m totally close-minded or I think my opinions are fact or think my word is gospel – I don’t! I’m not! I will ALWAYS listen to people’s opinions, when they are constructive, polite, and a genuine concern/enquiry, rather than a rant or a hate anon or some kind of guilt tripping. My opinions quite regularly do not line up with the mainstream, especially on here, and so I just keep them to myself, because I’m here to write and enjoy these characters. And I always approach constructive criticism with an open mind, because that’s how writers improve!
And hey, you might change my mind! Someone left me a comment pointing something out in chapter 29 that was off, and I’m over to fix it in a moment, because they’re totally right and their comment wasn’t rude, it wasn’t cruel, it was just a “Hey, xyz threw me, what’s up there? I thought ____. Anyway, the rest of the chapter…”
See the difference? See how one just makes me want to not post and delete the whole bloody thing, and one benefits everyone reading, you, and also me as a writer?
Constructive criticism is a GOOD THING. Hate messages are not.
So, my offer to you: turn your “you only love magnus and you hate alec and your story is shit” message around, and have a conversation with me. (It’d be nice and increase my respect for you if you did it off anon (I won’t publish it if you don’t want me to) but I won’t absolutely hold you to that.) Be polite, be respectful, and rather than making assumptions about ME, explain what it is that’s bothered you so much, and why you care! There must be something making you read the story to this point, unless you’re a total masochist and read things you hate for the Edward Cullen vibes, and there’s clearly something that’s made you feel the need to rant at me. Tell me! Nicely! I’ll explain, I’ll probably also see your side of the argument, and we can either agree to disagree, or if it’s a little thing I might make a change, or if it’s a bigger thing I might consider it as I go forward writing the story.
Isn’t that a better solution? Doesn’t that benefit everyone involved? You get answers, I get some food for thought, and polite open discussion about these things (hopefully) leads to a better story.
That’s my offer. You’re more than welcome to take it. That’s all I have to say here.

I’m afraid I have to disagree, quite firmly. I understand this is an issue people feel quite strongly about, but I’m not going to admit I’m wrong because, in this case, I have a firmly held critical opinion and believe I am justified in expressing it.
Yes, the character isn’t from the sixties (though, let’s remember, it’s unclear where he is from back in Hartnell’s time, it’s initially suggested he’s a human from the future if anything). But the writing is. And a few progressive shining stars like Verity Lambert aren’t going to lift everything out of the cesspit of human injustice. And it shows in the writing, including that of the character of the first Doctor.
Context never can be erased from writing. Never. And it absolutely, absolutely shows in how the first Doctor was written. Of course, Doctor Who transcends that. Doctor Who can transcend most anything. But it’s always there. I certainly noticed it a lot when watching the classic series several years back, and I have a far more critical eye now than I did then.
This isn’t reinvention. It’s just making the implicit issues explicit text and dealing with them. Hell, the show’s done it with more recent eras already (even eras by the same people!) with things as little as the Twelfth Doctor pondering why everything is called “sexy” now, or responding to Donna’s ending with Clara. The show’s always going to be reflecting on itself. That’s fine. That’s how it moves forward, and Twice Upon a Time is very much about moving forward, specifically to Jodie Whittaker, which I think is rather safe to call a progressive endpoint. And I’m sure give it a few years and we’ll be laughing about how the show was so white up until the Fourteenth Doctor came along and sorted it all out.
Take Susan’s departure, for example, which I mentioned the other day. And I know I’m just fishing for controversy here. I don’t like that feeling, but equally, I’m not going to shut myself up when people keep pushing me to voice something rather angrily like you just have. So I will admit, it’s a good moment. Hartnell utterly shines. It’s iconic for a reason. And yet, personally, I find it uncomfortably chauvinist in a way that is indicative of the era. The Doctor is generally overbearing and paternalistic towards Susan, but this is a particularly bad case. He has stripped her of agency numerous times and infantilized her, but this really takes the cake. Earlier in the serial we get beautiful moments like Susan rejecting the whole heteronormative labor thing, saying “I eat” when asked if she can cook. God, I love that moment. But her ending up with David, that’s treated as her way of growing up and living the life she should have. Travelling the universe isn’t good enough, I suppose, nor leaving on your own terms. You’ve gotta be dumped off to be the housewife of the first man who gives you googly eyes. I get the feeling if we were to see a televised continuation of that at the time, it’d be about her learning to cook and clean and raise children and become a good little wife.
Seriously, those lines are loaded. “I want you to belong somewhere, to have roots of your own. With David, you’ll be able to find those roots and live normally like any woman should do.” Yikes. Gotta be a wife and give up adventuring to be fulfilled, apparently. It’s not cruelly intended or anything, it’s just good old fashioned gendered expectations of the time. Meant sweetly, but from a modern eye, horrific. Same as the spring cleaning line David Bradley has, sweet and harmless in the sixties, eyebrow raising now. It’s implicit, culturally ingrained chauvinism, that wouldn’t impact an alien from the future, but would absolutely impact how men (and let’s not pretend otherwise, it was overwhelmingly men writing, directing, and producing) would represent one.
It’s not something active or malicious, but it is, in my perspective, something that does happen a lot in the era. Not big things, just a bunch of little ones. That happens to pretty much all fiction, impacted by its context. And it seems like those little things will give birth to little reflective moments in a bigger and more interesting episode.
At the end of the day, though, really, I just want to be excited about my favorite show having one of my favorite Doctors return to close off one of my favorite eras.
Weeeeelll, let’s start by pointing out the fact you are wrong when saying it’s unclear where the Doctor comes from. In the unaired pilot, Susan straight up says she was born in the 49th century. She also calls Ian and Barbara “Earth people” and the Docco says he is “of a different race”. If the unaired pilot is not canon enough for you, I will use examples from the aired pilot. In which the Doctor says “the children of my civilization” and “I tolerate this century but I don’t enjoy it”. So however you got “sexist 60s human” from that is beyound me. While they didn’t have a name for Gallifrey at the time, they explicitly said he is from another planet and from the future. And even if THAT’S not enough proof for you, I should argue that whether or not they knew where he was from at the beginning is actually totally irrelevant. The point is, we know now and the story is being written now. So, hypothetically speaking, if One did ever say something sexist in his days, it was because of the time period it was written in and not because it’s something the Doctor would say. So why make him say it now? We know the Doctor now and there would be no need to point out something that isn’t actually part of him.
You seem to be totally missing the point, however. The show is not reflecting on itself. The First Doctor has never shown an ounce of distaste or disrespect for someone based on their gender. He has never made a comment that comes off as sexiest. They are adding a character trait that was not there before for the sole purpose of being woke. Now, I’m doing this paragraph by paragraph, so I’m waiting to get to the part where you give me actual context from the show because so far it’s just been fancy words and generalizations.
AH! But here we go. Yes, let’s take Susan’s departure. But before we do, may I go to “I’m not going to shut myself up when people keep pushing me to voice something rather angrily like you just have” because did I in no way encourage you to become angry over this. I was telling you, as a One stan, the view point we have. If it came off as rude, I’m sorry, but that’s what voicing your opinion over the Internet does. And perhaps, my friend, as an analysis blog who posts opinions and replies to anons, you should understand this. I did not and do not have malicious intentions. I simply want to clear this up and clear the name of my favourite Doctor.
Whom you are trying to convince me is okay to completely destroy for the sake of unnecessary relevance. So if anyone should be angry, it’s me. But I’m not. I want to do this as civil as possible.
Now, back to Susan.

Pardon my French but, ehem, no shit. He is her grandfather and she is the last thing he has of his family and his home planet. Naturally, he would want to protect her. Whether I think it’s overbearing, no. I suppose that’s a matter of opinion. I think he has a reasonable level that any grandfather with his grandchild in dangerous situations would have. I believe the words you are looking for is protective and love. In fact, using Susan is a rather awful example because she was the one person he initially only showed affection for. Of course, he gained affection for Ian and Barbara when they all became besties, but from day one, Susan was the one he was the softest on.

I’m sorry I had to pause for a second because I think you might be looking too much into this. I’m 99% sure that was comic relief at best. What’s the opposite of cooking? Eating. What’s the key to comedy? Opposites.

I understand your job is to analyze, but the thing is, this scene isn’t that complicated. The Doctor did not leave Susan with David because David fancied her. She did not stay to become a good little wife or because it’s the “role of a woman” to look after a man/children. The whole point was that the Doctor felt he was dragging her down. Susan expressed numerous times that she wanted a place to belong, somewhere to stay and not have to keep moving around. The trouble was, she felt so attached and protective of her grandfather that she couldn’t bare to leave him. The Doctor, however, selflessly, forces her to stay. Because he knows she could do good in this time period and he knows she would be happy here (which she was). But he also knew she was too loyal to leave him. It had nothing to do with romance. It was a good place to give her what she wanted. It had to do with the Doctor giving up the one person he cared most about to let her live the life she wanted and make her not feel obligated to take care of him.
Which. Funnily enough. Is the opposite of chauvinism.
“I want you to belong somewhere, to have roots of your own.” Because that’s straight up what she has been asking for for the past few episodes.
“Yikes. Gotta be a wife and give up adventuring to be fulfilled, apparently.” Nope. Because once again, Susan expressed that she wasn’t fulfilled by adventure and wanted to belong somewhere. Because, believe it or not, people all want different things. Not everybody wants adventure. Some people want roots. This, of course, all coming from her trauma of being pulled from her home planet and exiled into a stolen time machine where she proceeded to go on adventures in which she watched friends and her grandfather nearly die multiple times. So no, it has nothing to do with being a good little wifey but instead, wanting to be home somewhere. Sort of like when you take a long vacation and you just want to get to your own bed. But Gallifrey is off limits because it didn’t exist at the time of writing so the Doctor gave her a new home.
“that wouldn’t impact an alien from the future, but would absolutely impact how men (and let’s not pretend otherwise, it was overwhelmingly men writing, directing, and producing) would represent one.” Yes, which is a totally valid argument considering Verity Lambert, a female, produced the episode. And like.................. all of Hartnell’s era. Most of it, anyway. Up until Mission of the Unknown. Also, fun fact, Verity was one of the first women to be awarded role as a full time producer in television. So, y’know, Doctor Who was also built on powerful females in charge.
“It’s not something active or malicious, but it is, in my perspective, something that does happen a lot in the era. Not big things, just a bunch of little ones.” Lots of little things you haven’t named. I, personally, cannot think of any. And neither can you, apparently, as the one example you did give wasn’t actually an act of sexism.
If One is truly one of your favourite Doctors, you shouldn’t be excited for what Moffat is going to do to him. Because a true One fan knows this is not something he would do. He adored his companions, he never once said an offhanded chauvinistic line to them. And ESPECIALLY not with the intentions of it being such.
And, once again, even if you can come up with a valid example that perhaps I may have forgotten about as there IS a lot of Classic Who, I would like to go back to my original statement by saying any slightly, offhanded sexist remarks would yes, be because of the time period it was written in. However, just because they did it back then doesn’t mean we have to do it today. If you go out and call someone a racial slur and say “Sorry! They did it in the 60s and I’m just trying to make a point that it’s offensive now” doesn’t actually help anything. You still were an asshole to somebody, somebody got hurt, and nothing was gained, because yeah, no shit it’s offensive. The fact that Moffat would even think of adding such a plot device despite it not legitimately being a part of the First Doctor’s personality, says more about Moffat than it does about the writers of the 60s/The First Doctor. He’s essentially doing what writers in the 60s did and then pulling himself back up and going “It’s okay! I know this is wrong!” Good for you, Moff. We didn’t need to know that because it affects Doctor Who in no way and reflects on something that never existed.
As someone who likes Moffat, you should be thankful I disagree with this. Because if he didn’t do it to begin with, he would’ve saved himself some dumbassery.

Might I ask why there is such a rift between Jonerys and Jonsa?? I like both ships to be honest.
Let me begin by stating that this is a TV show and all the characters here are FICTIONAL aka not real. Having said that, I don’t hate any of the characters in that show or book maybe except Littlefinger coz he triggers me abit). So you asked and I shall answer! (a little long but bear with me)
To be really honest, I am not one to trash or hate on what others ship. It’s honestly their own business and I think it’s best to ship and let ship. But after S6 where there were just so much of Jon x Sansa scenes, that’s where all the fandom wars began.
Let me just say that I have read all the books and although I am not great at remembering details or paragraphs of certains characters and their POVs but I do remember similarities and events. And mind you, two of the characters that seem more alike and parallel each other are that of Jon’s and Sansa’s. And since the second book, I’ve sort of low key shipped them. As a couple. Yep I started way back then when I think there were probably a handful of us book Jonsa shippers and I hadn’t discovered AO3 yet back then so assumed the fandom was extremely small.
After S6 however, Jonsa exploded and that’s when I started to go on tumblr (circa Oct - Nov 2016) where to my pleasure found many others who shared like sentiments and they were also super duper nice and talented. I was introduced to amazing Jonsa fics, gorgeous gifsets, mood boards, photo manips and my favourite - Jonsa metas and character/show/plot analysis. The passion (and thirst) for Jonsa was real. And to my surprise, fellow book readers like me who also shipped Jon x Sansa who shared my opinion on how Jon x Sansa could really be endgame show wise. Now with all that attention, the Jonsa fandom started getting dragged in the dirt and just quite almost literally doused with vitriol by the J0nerys camp. I mean, I have not for the life of me, chatted with one single fan of J0nerys who didn’t try to hurl abuse or hate at my post about Jonsa (I can’t remember how many blogs I’ve reported to tumblr now). They have been, for the most part, extremely rude and mean and I don’t see how their ship makes sense. Their argument is (and always will be) that Jon and Sansa grew up as siblings and that Jon will never go for that. Whoah okay have I got news for you J0nerys camp: canon incest factor is on big time now that R + L= J - so, pot, meet kettle. *rolls eyes* did they think that reveal was for nothing on the most popular show on TV? There’s a plot brewing there somewhere. If Jon wouldn’t go for Sansa on that premise, what makes them think he would want D when he finds out they’re super duper related? Insert vomit gif here. Like I said, that ship does not make sense at all to me, no matter how I try to read from the books or watch the show, nothing comes up. However, I do admire the fandom’s dedication and devotion to their otp. They put the ‘fan’ in fanatic.
So now that we’ve established that I don’t like J0nerys, do I go and purposely search for all the J0nerys blogs and tags and spew shit at them for shipping their otp? NO I don’t. And neither do I leave any anon hate on any of these blogs. And I could probably say the same for the Jonsa camp. We’re a gentle fun bunch, believe me. And yet, despite us doing our own thing and shipping our otp, probably knowing 80% that our ship won’t be canon and will 100% cry if it doesnt, we’re still staying above the crap and refuse to stoop down to such level of scum.
I also know that there are others who ship both and that’s fine too, you do you. No hate there.
Sorry I digressed a bit but I needed to make my case, but to answer your question, honestly I don’t know why the rift became what it is but I bet my cookies that it started with unsolicited verbal abuse and hate from the J0nerys camp and the Jonsa fam just really sick and tired of being pushed around and receiving all of that crap.
So I guess another question you should ask me is this:
Do you think the J0nerys camp are anti Sansa?
You bet. They’re 100% against Sansa Stark - a hostage/abuse/rape survivor with no fighting skills, no wish to conquer cities or Kingdoms, no wish to be queen, no dragons to do everything for her, just really polite, gentle, pretty and really really smart who just wants her beloved home back.
