An 'A-ha!' fandom moment, ft. The Owl House

These comments I screencapped from a user I watch elsewhere really hit like a brick in the face to me. I'm blotting out OP's name, mostly cuz this was just a shower thought they had rather than any meaningful open discussion with people, but it ended up making me realize something (also NO they're not some contrarian AntiSJW type or even hate TOH; they're a very gay+trans writer themselves. Sorry if youknowwhoyouare sees this and recognizes ur posts but you don't allow reblogs or comments and I wanted to present it on my own):

The Owl House was always hampered by being killed halfway through, writing wise and that will always be it's greatest 'sin'. However, OP's comment made me realize how much the show kind of tells you it's characters are flawed rather than actually give them arcs to suggest it, especially in season 1. When I say flawed I don't mean lacking quirks that are relatable but human: Eda is a recluse criminal; King thought he could kill people and acted like it; Luz is a genki girl; Amity starts off as a bully; Hunter...is unfortunately Hunter, ect. Those ARE flaws, character wise, but in the presence of the complete story (as complete as the show will ever be) they really aren't actually flawed, bad people in anyway.

Before I go further, two things: 1, IN ALL FAIRNESS, this is why myself and others particularly LOVE the characters and why TOH was a comfort show for me rather than a 'high-tension narrative'. The characters are a lot of what you want and hope to be like and I think that's really sweet and enjoyable, especially for horror and especially for kids.

2, NO! I DON'T think any particular bad faith cartoon reviewer opinions about coddling certain characters and punishing others IS WHAT DANA and co did at all here! Steven Universe and certain crap-reviewer's takes ON Steven Universe and how it's characters were flawed but overly forgiven by the fandom the show itself are NOT the b-all end-all of this discussion, nor are they the reason The Owl House is the way it is!

The context op was talking about was how in the upcoming hate crime The Last Airbender live-action show the showrunners are going to tone down Sokka's sexism because they think it's 'unlikable'. Even though, we all knew as children that this was an arc for him and it was WRONG, so axing it because we the audience lack nuance to recognize characters we love doing problamtic-sisms is BEYOND annoying.

Op's point is how The Owl House in particular doesn't actually expect much or want much out of it's characters. Or audience. For any infighting early on about how much Amity should 'die' because of reasons, that's really just fandom infighting when you get right down to it. There's nothing on par with the disagreement people have over, say, the Diamonds from Steven Universe and how Steven 'totally forgave them or 'should have murdered them in cold blood' about The Owl House. And like...from a fandom point of view that's good, but otherwise the show is pretty concrete the way you're supposed to see certain characters vs other shows which allow you to make up your own mind.

Avatar, Star vs the Forces of Evil (pre finale), Centaurworld and Amphibia all showcase your protagonists being genuinely, intensely flawed. Sure, maybe some neckbreather crap-pseudocritic complains that they 'made the unlikable' or whatever (i.e. me with Friendship is Magic) but overall the actual point is HOW the characters actually have grown and have ended up with the ending and morality they need. The villains, no not Zukos or 'redeemed' villains who joined the protagonist squad, VILLAIN-villains, will always be at least one serious step behind the protagonists and that's what give the protagonists the cautionary wherewithal to end them like they should and not 'be like them'. It's such a fufilling narrative, there's a reason people like it so much because it's really good when it's delivered well.

Removed from my fandom gaze; the Owl House feels like it's saying it has that ultimate messaging and character arc when it actually doesn't. Your protagonists have the endearing aspirational-part totally covered, but as far as the actual 'edge' and nuance? Well...

Eda is, at most, naughty. She really isn't any kind of morally sidetracked character. She's an outlaw because literally her society is awful to her and she's in the right to be against it. She's cursed but she's not addicted to her potions or hiding it or not really taking care of herself or her loved ones because of it. Her actual biggest flaw is that she's been 'running away' from problems rather than dealing with them, but I'd be lying if that wasn't suggested more than it's actually portrayed; or at least, dealt with fast enough in "Eda's Requiem". A bigger issue I see, even if it's what's also endearing about her, is that she REALLY isn't a flawed caregiver at all. It's portrayed as her most redeeming feature that she's otherwise a good mom and mentor, but Eda having virtually no problems in raising Luz and King just, again, makes her feel ONLY aspirational. All of the angst about 'failing' to parent and making up for it is moved all onto Camilla and sadly all of that angst for her is mostly within an already bloated episode. Eda, while an absolute mood, lacks any real kind of edge. Does she need it or not? I don't know. Discuss, kids.

Luz, like OP says, is treated like this high-energy super-optimist. She's like Star Butterfly in that her fangirlism and impulsivness are supposed to get her in trouble. But, she absolutely just isn't one when you break it down. Besides episode 2, Luz really is never that inconsiderate or lost in her fantasies ever again throughout the show. She never has anything like what Steven goes through where he hops into Larz' body and makes things worse for people by trying to fix things- which is not only good filler but it calls forward to the ultimate ending of Steven's arc for the series - Luz is just sort of adorable. Luz has blindsided by hype moments of weakness, like when she accidentally hurts Owlbert or messes with Amity's secret room, but still always level headed and down-to-earth. Her impulses are always kind of treated like...excusable? Because, again, they usually are. This is a large part about what makes her self-hatred at the end of the show about accidentally helping Belos' feel 'forced'. Even MOREso than what Hunter and Daddy Titan explain about Belos using her, we the audience never see Luz's choice to go back in time and try and get answers from Philip as being anything other than just, you know, logical. Because it is. The show acts like what Luz did was reckless and bad and that she was SOOO overtaken by her fangirlism about Philip and now just how much she has to live with the guilt and regret of helping being duped by him...it just doesn't come off that way at all. She was only so much excited about meeting him and her interest was getting home to her mother. In terms of comparing her to Philip, that's all fine and good, but again it's not 'flawed'. Not really, anyway.

Lilith absolutely has it the worst...but I kinda think people know that. She arguably does have the most morally-gray turning point in the show given what she did to her own sister. But neither the characters nor her nor the show really hold her accountable in any lasting way for cursing Eda. Lilith is the closest we get to that 'Diamond'-dilemma. She does 'make things right way too quickly and it's obvious to even her biggest fans that her character is really rushed in this area. They lampshade what Lilith did and that she was their villain in season 2 and 2B, but lampshading isn't the same thing as progress. As a result, as a Lilith fan you kind of never really forgive her for what she did. None of that's her fault, cause' you know...she doesn't exist, but it makes it frustrating that you the fan watching the show is doing the heavy-lifting in your mind in this area.What you come away from is this feeling of loving the characters for being able to work everything out. They're engaging and nuanced in theory, but you also feel robbed, w or w/o the Disney interference, of them being fully rounded or WHOLE. It kinda feels like 'and suddenly, he wasn't racist, anymore' all the time with every character ever with except Amity's mom, the Titan Trappers and Belos.

The reason everyone dunks on Star vs the Forces of Evil's finale, (besides being salty over ship wars and declaring THAT'S the reason for the drop in quality) is that 'Cleaved' could have not only worked but REALLY worked. It just needed to be better written and processed as an ending. Instead people reviled Star, the protagonist we're supposed to be rooting for, for what feels like impulsive apathy and cruelty towards everyone else by destroying magic, as opposed to it being an actually selfless sacrifice that makes her different than Toffee. Ultimatley, I do prefer The Owl House, unfinished as it is, to any of that. But yeah... I can now never unsee the characters as being what they are: fun but indulgent when they're supposedly complex. Indulgent is never bad u guys, but the problem is when you only have that to go on while insisting you have fully developed characters, there's a lot of the show telling you how to feel and how to come away from it rather than letting you, the audience, make of that yourself. As annoying as fan-wars can be over this stuff and when people are either WAAAY to forgiving of their villain blorbo or form hate-campaigns over Glub Shitto for ruining their life, it is ultimately a good thing that shows give you that chance to really see the characters that way at all.

The Owl House is, as OP calls it, "tumblr feels" not for being gay and magical and fun and wholesome and indulgent like that stuff is GREAT. It feels 'tumblr oriented' in that it all kind of feels too easy even when it's not for your protagonists. It's never actually "challenging". I guess, in as far as 'good' indulgence is concerned, it's as warm and fuzzy and a happy AU fanfic you found but not so much the Pacifist Ending of Undertale where you really do feel bad if you rectify the good ending in anyway. It's fun and it's comfort food, but not entirely lasting as you want it to be???

Amphibia, I think, was also way better than Owl House in this respect. It wasn't perfect cause nothing is but you really got a feeling for HOW flawed Marcy, Sasha, the townsfolk and even Hop Pop throughout their arcs-- which made it so SO rewarding to see them get their happy endings and come together to defeat the core and be the better people they needed to become.

The Owl House is my favorite where I think Amphibia is the better of the two.

grabs u by the shoulder. hey. hey u. have you've ever wanted to learn about a mcrp arc with themes about violence and the death of innocence, scary arcane experiments, political murder, and interdimensional travel where u meet alternative versions of urself?

well if any of that sounds awesome to you, BOY DO I JUST HAVE THE THING FOR YOU!!! midmysticx's egg arg in lifesteal season 4 has all of that!!! it had to be cut off short because of meta reasons, but with what was released so far, it was. So Cool .

now i HIGHLY recommend checking this out for yourself (a curated playlist that i made can be found here! it's pretty short but. imo the themes of it carry it in SUCH an interesting way), but if you don't have the time/want more. propaganda reasons why you should watch it, there's more under the cut!

(mild cw though for the "having a voice in your head through magic items/powers" trope! it plays a very small part in the story, but i'd figure i'd give a heads up just in case 👍)

ok so like. this arg happens in the canon of lifesteal season 4 (lifesteal seasons fully reset like hc seasons) and the main "progatanist" of this arg is c!midmysticx/c!mid, and most of the "lore" is told in the format of vhs tapes

that being said, c!mid is a little confusing in the way that s4!mid is implied to be a different character that c!mid from other seasons

i say that bc s4!mid made an "application video" for lifesteal, citing about how shes excited to join (even tho cc!mid has been a part of ls since s2)

also. very interestingly, mid excludes herself from the s4 start in a replay shot (even tho cc!mid was present during the s4 launch)

and interesting enough, s4!mid seems a bit. naive in the application video? like she mentions she's "good at editing" as one of her attributes on why she should be added to the server and mentions. nothing about the violence of the server (other than introducing the mechanics of the server which is LITERALLY about killing people to gain hearts and losing hearts when you get killed)

halfway through her application video, though (after a few months passed according to the date on the bottom of each video) she sounds very. bitter

the video changes to be all in black and white and she starts asking: "why? why do you all kill and ruin friendships and betray? all for hearts?!"--a MUCH different demeanor than what she had when she started. bitter and resentful, almost, compared with the excitement she showed earlier in her "application", and it ends with her announcing she stole the dragon egg and she's made 4 trials for people to look for it

anyways, moving onto the first tape that takes place ~around 2 months before the shift in demeanor, s4!mid starts to record video tapes about experiments she's doing with the dragon egg, eventually combining a heart with the dragon egg and opens up a portal

she doesnt know what on Earth it is so. shes testing it out right. like any person with safety concerns would

and well uh.

she puts a pig through and it fucking died

so . Erm! not a good start

anyways she eventually feels a voice/urge calling her to go through the portal even though she knows its risky, but she's been having such bad headaches that she goes through the portal anyways, ditching her plans to figure out how to control the power of the egg before going through it

and uh. heres where things get confusing again because this is where. the interdimensional stuff comes in

she arrives in an unknown location right. and. jumpscare . it ends up being a manor (and i'm just gonna call this mid "murder mystery!mid" bc the manor is the same one in one of her other videos, a halloween special where mid + co do a whodunit)

and basically, s4!mid witnesses a mayor election (which is a big part of murder mystery!mid's story), and after s4!mid explores for a little, s4!mid and murder mystery!mid eventually . make eye contact

and um. you see. s4!mid accidently eavesdrops (im assuming so? there's a tape of that and its been established that s4!mid films all of them herself) on murder mystery!mid's plan to kill the mayor and Uh. s4!mid. ends up also witnessing murder mystery!mid's murder as well

s4!mid gets chased and has to go back to the portal to escape, but the issue is. the portal doesnt bring her back to lifesteal. it brings her to eclipse smp

AND FUCKING BRINGS HER TO ECLIPSE!MID'S GRAVE

she eventually sees someone crying over eclipse!mid's grave before going away into the woods before hearing a sound and running away

that's where the arg (unfortunately) had to be cut off but like. Still. the part that makes me constantly rotate this arg in my head is the fact mid literally saw her own death. the different versions of her. her witnessing a version of her that was Willing to commit murder. the whole change in demeanor in the application video in such a short time .

anyways, if i had to homebrew an "ending" to this arg, i think mid would have traced back and started to Learn more about the other versions of herself, and eventually had a character arc where she just. witnesses all of this destruction and pain and suffering

and just. Realizes how much of that there can be and realizes how much stuff like that effects lifesteal and how. pointless it is in the end.

and eventually, in a last ditch effort to have everyone work together again and despite all she's been through, makes the egg arg

also on a meta level it would make sense i think (since a lot of the actual arg puzzles involved trust and working together and trusting your teammates)

and on the topic of the egg arg meta, it fucking worked. the lifestealers did work together and put trust in each other even when threatened with death to solve the arg.

it did bring lifesteal together. even just for a little bit

and i am just. man thats fucking cool!!!!!!

not to mention just. the cool character study stuff you can do on c!mid. the thought of seeing yourself throughout all of this. realizing about how these things can effect you in different ways. witnessing your own death TWICE. and by the time to come up because of it, you're a changed person on a fundamental level. and in the end, looking at the thing that caused all of this, and throwing it out there in a last ditch effort to make things right again. in the worst scenario. even though you're bitter and angry now. you try anyways.

that concept is so. cool to me . i wish more people talked about it but yk. this is me throwing my hat into the ring

Here's why I will never not make fun of this situation.

2018: Ricciardo leaves RedBull because he doesn't want to be second driver to Max. Maybe he didn't say it but it was clear as day that was the reason. Max was a great driver that was slowly becoming the talent he is now and everyone knew that and everyone also knew Daniel would probably have to take the place as second driver in a season. He leaves to go to another team which is Renault eventhough there were engines problems with that engine in this year.

2019: An okay season in the midfield

2020: A great season. He is in the top 5, had 2 podiums and Cyril adores him. Him and Esteban both got podiums. And yet Ricciardo decides to go to McLaren. Everyone is surprised, Cyril saying that they had many changes and that it takes stability which he thought Daniel valued. He also though that Daniel would provide that stability. Not surprising given that Cyril made bats, got a tattoo and truly valued both of his drivers deeply. Nonetheless Ricciardo decides to go to McLaren. Cyril supposedly warns him not to trust Zak Brown. I feel it is also worth nothing that while I would argue that with Esteban they were close matched, after one season Lando was already shaping himself up to be a genuine great talent with beating a far more experienced driver.

2021: Yeah many people will say this was a good season for McLaren but looking at it the only real standout result was Ricciardo's win. But already he pales in comparison to Lando who continues to get podiums and is consistently in the top 10 in nearly all races.

2022: The final nail in the coffin. I frankly don't want to hear about how bad McLaren treated him. I truly don't. Yes, they did sometimes make questionable calls and yes they weren't kind at points. That doesn't matter though when one team-mate is scoring 3x the points off the other. There are no excuses for that big off a gap. The qualy stats speak volumes. No team-mate qualified worse in head to head than Ricciardo. There was all reason to drop him especially since he was already worse than Lando the previous year eventhough he won a race. It turns out that McLaren treated him horribly to the surprise of no one and once again, we are reminded that his former teamboss warned him about his exact same scenario.

The moment Oscar is announced Ricciardo fans twist him as a villain, accuse him of stealing someone's seat, call him a snake etc.

2023: This is even before the season. Ricciardo declines seats at teams such as Haas because he doesn't want to be in a backmarker. He then says he needs a break from racing and that for now he will take the role in RedBull as it allows him to focus on himself and have more time for everything that F1 makes difficult.

So what am I getting at?

Ricciardo leaves a team not to be second driver. He then leaves another team where he is beloved to go to a team that his former boss warns him about because he doesn't trust the dude that is plastered everywhere eventhough he is not the boss. Said team turns out to be shit and he then does not accept other team offers because the teams are so far back that he apparently doesn't consider it seat worthy. He also wants to take a break from racing.

Then, he joins the worst team on the grid this season as third driver in an environment that is notorious for throwing at anyone that doesn't perform to their ideals see a rookie that wasn't even halfway through the season.

Sorry if I can't stand him but he brought this entirely on himself.

Greyjoy Ages Post, Attempting To Be Objective

A lot of people really bravely try to make sense of one of the many parts of asoiaf where GRRM didn't even try to account for the linear passage of time. I generally tend to disagree with at least one of the conclusion, however, hence my idea to make a post with just every information we have, as reference for people to draw their own, just as a fun challenge to myself, since I'm very aware there isn't a canon truth George intended to be gleaned here. Special thanks to whoever started A Search Of Ice And Fire or I would have died halfway through this

1 - Theon and Asha's age

Theon is described by himself, Asha, and Catelyn as having been ten when he left Pyke or when he reached Winterfell. The only exception is Asha's "I liked you better when you were nine". It's also emphasized as meaningful (by Robb and by Balon) that he was a hostage half his life specifically, during ACOK and thus in 299, the latter only after Theon corrects him about having been 10 years rather than 9 since he left. He's also described as being nineteen in the first chapter of AGOT, which, without getting in the specifics of the fanmade timeline, seems to be early in 298. I'm not going to completely discount that he might have been 9 (in the sense of having turned 9 that year) but it's unlikely to me

If his departure from Pyke was in 289 (The World Of Ice And Fire tells us both that the Greyjoy rebellion started in 289 and that it was over in less than a year), this gives his birthdate as having been in 279 or 278. If it was in 290, then it's 281, 280 or 279. I personally find the first set more believable as 1) I feel like the year changing might have been recorded in an historical document, 2) every time someone thinks of the end of the rebellion (Theon himself remembering his journey to Winterfell, Ned thinking of when he last saw Robert which might also have involved some post war celebration) their maths of how many years it's been always goes back to being 289, with the exception of Balon's misremembering above 3) Catelyn in ACOK refers to Balon wearing a crown "if only for a season". We know that the long summer started in 289 (in the prologue of ACOK Maester Cressen says it's been ten years, two turns and sixteen days, and it's definitely 299 by then) so that season was probably the short spring before the long summer, and it was over within 289.

So the range 278-281, with 279 being the likeliest to me as it has him freshly turned 10 for the Greyjoy rebellion and 19 in early AGOT. The only information we ever get about Asha's age is she's 3 years older than Theon (in Theon ACOK I), so it's 275-278 (but again most likely imho 276

2 - Aeron and Urrigon's age

We get a precise-ish number for Urrigon

A flying axe took off half of Urri's hand when he was ten-and-four, playing at the finger dance whilst his father and his elder brothers were away at war.

This refers to Robert's rebellion, which the Greyjoys joined after "a raven came to Pyke with word of Prince Rhaegar's death upon the Trident" , which The World of Ice and Fire claims happened in 282, but doesn't feel very right to me at all, to be honest, as that seems to presume kind of a flash development of Robert's rebellion (here are some calculations made by other fans for reference). Even if it was 282, it was probably late enough the Greyjoys would not have joined before 283, imho. However let's be broad and say it could be 282, 283 or 284 supposing that the Greyjoys took a long time to come home after Quellon's death (awoiaf tells us 'by then the war was almost done", which feels more like still 283, but still) . So 267-270 is his range, with 268-269 as the more likely, however. This means the oldest birth year for Aeron is 268.

For the youngest he could be there are maybe some clues here if you take this speech as following at least rough chronological order:

It shamed him still to recall the years that followed Urri's death. At six-and-ten he called himself a man, but in truth he had been a sack of wine with legs. He would sing, he would dance (but not the finger dance, never again), he would jape and jabber and make mock. He played the pipes, he juggled, he rode horses, and could drink more than all the Wynches and the Botleys, and half the Harlaws too. The Drowned God gives every man a gift, even him; no man could piss longer or farther than Aeron Greyjoy, as he proved at every feast. Once he bet his new longship against a herd of goats that he could quench a hearthfire with no more than his cock. Aeron feasted on goat for a year, and named the longship Golden Storm, though Balon threatened to hang him from her mast when he heard what sort of ram his brother proposed to mount upon her prow.

In the end the Golden Storm went down off Fair Isle during Balon's first rebellion, cut in half by a towering war galley called Fury when Stannis Baratheon caught Victarion in his trap and smashed the Iron Fleet. Yet the god was not done with Aeron, and carried him to shore. Some fishermen took him captive and marched him down to Lannisport in chains, and he spent the rest of the war in the bowels of Casterly Rock, proving that krakens can piss farther and longer than lions, boars, or chickens.

This would mean he's 17 at the youngest at the time of the Greyjoy rebellion (so born in or before 272) which anyhow fits with a reasonable minimum age for a pretty feckless lad to get his own ship, but it's not a fixed number. 268-272 overall

3 - Maron and Rodrik's age

Latest possible Maron's birth year is 277, but more likely to be 274-275, based on Asha's. I'm going to assume there are no twins involved or it would have been mentioned. The only real indication is they must have both been old enough to have been involved in combat in some capacity, which is really taken care of by them being older than Asha already. (Above, Urrigon was not involved in combat at 14, but I think we can expect Balon to exercise less common sense than Quellon on this) Rodrik is kind of implied to have been commanding the assault to Seagard

"When my brother stormed Seagard,” Theon said. Lord Jason had slain Rodrik Greyjoy under the walls of the castle, and thrown the ironmen back into the bay.

If you assume this must mean Rodrik was a captain, the ages we get for that are 15 (Dagon Greyjoy) 17 (Balon) 16-19 (Aeron). Theon is also made a captain at once at 20-sh with no discussion of whether it's too soon, and Asha obviously already is one at 23-ish. Maron dies at Pyke, so there's no indication he's a captain as well, though he could have been and simply have returned to Pyke at the same time Balon did.

4 - Balon, Euron, Victarion and irrelevant dead brothers age

This gets really complicated, mostly because our only source of anything material is Aeron, who's not the reliablest of narrators in general and very removed in time from his older brothers. Still here's what we get.

Nine sons had been born from the loins of Quellon Greyjoy, the Lord of the Iron Islands. Harlon, Quenton, and Donel had been born of Lord Quellon’s first wife, a woman of the Stonetrees. Balon, Euron, Victarion, Urrigon, and Aeron were the sons of his second, a Sunderly of Saltcliffe. For a third wife Quellon took a girl from the green lands, who gave him a sickly idiot boy named Robin, the brother best forgotten. The priest had no memory of Quenton or Donel, who had died as infants. Harlon he recalled but dimly, sitting grey-faced and still in a windowless tower room and speaking in whispers that grew fainter every day as the greyscale turned his tongue and lips to stone. One day we shall feast on fish together in the Drowned God’s watery halls, the four of us and Urri too. Nine sons had been born from the loins of Quellon Greyjoy, but only four had lived to manhood.

The Wiki's age calculations page takes this very literally as implying none of the boys from Quellon's first marriage lived to age 16. If you accept this, it does put a very tight timeframe on the births as, depending on how you feel about how young is too young to suspend your disbelief on Aeron forming conscious memories, and whether you accept some of the dead kids might have been twins, the age difference between Balon and Aeron must be no more than 13-14 years. (11-13 if you assume, as the Wiki does, Harlon to be the oldest of the children of Quellon's first marriage, which, this list seems to be going in by birth order, but it's not explicitely said, so YMMV). This would give us a very earliest birth year of 254 based on Aeron's very earliest possible birth year calculated above.

Otoh, given greyscale can take up to 5-10 years according to JonCon to kill you, there's the chance that Aeron is not being super exact here, and Harlon might simply have been under 16 when the greyscale started paralyzing him but have died years later. TWOIAF refers to the sons of Quellon's first marriage as having died "in their youth".

At fifteen [Balon] had sailed with Dagmer Cleftjaw to the Stepstones and spent a summer reaving.

This is not terribly useful but does exclude some birth dates as we know a winter was going on around 273, as Tyrion mentiones that "He had been born in the dead of winter, a terrible cruel one that the maesters said had lasted near three years"

Victarion has a couple vague thoughs that could help give a feeling of where he's positioned relatively to his brothers:

Obedience came naturally to Victarion Greyjoy; he had been born to it. Growing to manhood in the shadow of his brothers, he had followed Balon dutifully in everything he did. Later, when Balon's sons were born, he had grown to accept that one day he would kneel to them as well, when one of them took his father's place upon the Seastone Chair.

(implying he expected to outlive Balon but also that he had already grown into manhood when his kids were born, which REALLY clashes with the very tight timeframe mentioned above. But that's how the whole thing is, you just have to pick which information you want to take as figurative)

Euron having killed Harlon also puts a limit on how much age difference the brothers can have had, and also def reinforces that Harlon was at least pre-teen aged when he died. It's also clear that Robin was at least a toddler when he died, and he was born in early 283 or before then.

I really wanted to say something about Alannys as well but there's really not much at all, the only informations are:

The AFFC appendix defines her as Rodrik's younger sister, and he's 7 years younger than Gwynesse so Alannys is at least 8 years younger than her

Tywin does not includes Alannys in the group of wives of potential marriage candidates for Cersei who are younger than their husbands, so probably Balon and Alannys don't have a large age gap, it's also true that Tywin is probably seeing her differently because of her known illness however

I wanna get into precure, do you have a fav or ome you think people should start with?

Ye!! I want to preface this by saying Precure is basically a collection of advertisements to sell children toys, but it's fun head empty activity if you like magical girl stuff. I think it's best to just scroll through the Wikipedia page and pick whichever one looks the most interesting to you, but I'll talk about the ones I like and dislike below:

1. Heartcatch

My favorite season. Great characters, art, feels so incredibly full of love. Character design is by Yoshihiko Umakoshi (Magical Doremi). The stylized animation really adds to the fight scenes. I've seen a lot of trans girls resonate with a particular character and it's fun to keep that headcanon in mind when watching. Theme song plays in my head everyday.

2. Hirogaru Sky

The newest season. Really easy to get into and features a lot of firsts in the series such as a blue main cure, first magical boy on the main team, and adult cure on the main team (she's only 18 though lol). I just wish the fight scenes were more punch-y since the protagonist, Sora, is an athlete.

3. Kirakira Pretty Cure a la Mode

This one is hated by a lot of people because there's no hand to hand combat, but I feel like it more than makes up for that with the characters and general bubbly vibe. Has a budget Haruka/Michiru cat girl x dog girl couple for the yuri fans. I never skip the transformations.

4. Futari wa Pretty Cure

The original. Fight scenes only went down in quality after it imo. Really distinctive among magical girl shows.

5. Fresh Precure

The art isn't really up to par with other entries, but if you don't mind that it has a character who really tugs at the heartstrings. Invented the concept of a mid season cure (cure joins halfway through) and no one else has done it like her. Truly believe she suffered more than Jesus.

Others I recommend are Star Twinkle, Tropical Rogue, and Suite.

As for the ones I'm like... Eh about..

Go! Princess is a fan favorite. It has a nice storybook feel, dynamic fight scenes occasionally, and the transformations are stunning. But as an Utena fan it felt weird to watch them go "no it's okay to want to be a princess actually! princesses can be strong too!" Very annoying message to see be sent to kids to buy products lol

Yes 5... There are two episodes I think are like the best in this franchise and then the rest was ruined by a chipmunk I wish was roadkill. The romance is between the protagonist and her teacher (who also happens to be the mascot character lol). It's the season that got a sequel that's currently airing with the cast all grown up, but they had to bring that ugly flea-ridden fuck back.

Huggto. The thing is I was spoiled for this and it was a spoiler that made my neurons kind of short circuit so I decided it definitely was not for me.

is sarumi toxic?? genuine question, i dont know if its just the way certain fanmanga that ive read portrays their relationship. i love the ship with my whole heart, dont get me wrong. ive read lost small world, finished rok and season 1 (halfway through season 2). consuming all kinds of k stuff, i personally dont see it toxic as certain people do (knowing that theyve already reconciled). im super confused on who to believe so here i am asking you

I will say to start that I’m not exactly a neutral third party here, even with me being a filthy multishipper Sarumi is still my ‘main’ ship. That said, I personally don’t consider them to be toxic as a ship. There are definitely elements of their relationship as presented that are not good and could certainly lead to toxicity, but that’s also pretty understandable considering Fushimi as a character is not a healthy person and isn’t equipped to deal with relationships in a healthy way. If we look at, say, only season one Sarumi is a vacuum there’s certainly room to call it toxic, with the way Fushimi interacts with Yata by drawing out all his negative feelings and deliberately goading him into physical violence, but thankfully there’s a lot more to their relationship than episode five of season one.

When you consider the side materials the series is pretty clear that Fushimi’s actions stem from him being an abused and neglected child who clung to the one person who ever showed him affection and who has no idea how to handle things that other people would consider easy. When they join Homra and Fushimi doesn’t feel like he fits in he starts to assume a lot of things, that Yata’s leaving him behind, that he’s going to be rejected, because up until he met Yata Fushimi’s entire life has been him being rejected by the world around him and rejecting the world in turn because it’s his only method of coping. When he burns his Homra tattoo in front of Yata it’s a move intended to hurt them both, because the only way Fushimi knows of to break something that he loves is to do it spectacularly — Fushimi himself can’t break what he cares about so he takes on the persona of the person who could, of the guy who can flawlessly destroy what Fushimi Saruhiko loves every time. Fushimi is so afraid of losing his precious friendship with Yata that he feels like he has to be the one to break it first in order to save himself the pain of losing it. This is a toxic mindset but also a totally understandable one in the context of Fushimi’s character.

Obviously Fushimi’s way of dealing with his emotions is not healthy but he’s not a healthy person, that’s well established. Are a lot of Fushimi’s problems of his own making? Very much so. Does he really owe Yata an apology for being a dick all this time? Also yes. But Fushimi’s actions are also very understandable due to his upbringing, and Yata himself says that Fushimi is trying to be better — “You have a sense of guilt.” Fushimi’s relationship with Niki is a toxic one because Niki is abusing him and literally doesn’t care about the trauma he’s inflicting on his kid. Fushimi on the other hand is well aware of what he’s inflicting and tries very hard not to care, while still not being able to let go of Yata and still occasionally letting his mask slip (how he has difficulty dealing with a grieving Yata post-S1 for example, and how he still helps Yata in Missing Kings) and ultimately, Fushimi knows what he did was wrong and he and Yata start to reconcile. They aren’t a perfect pure and unproblematic uwu ship but I don’t consider them to be toxic just because Fushimi dared to be mentally ill, the Sarumi I ship isn’t the one where they hate each other and where Fushimi’s still constantly cruel to Yata, it’s the one where they make up and recognize their mistakes and Fushimi starts on a healing path that includes recognizing what he did to Yata and in his own fumbling way trying not to do it again even though it’s difficult for him. (And also frankly if someone does like the toxic version of them go for it, you do you. I really hate how people tend to throw around the word ‘toxic’ as some kind of forbidden brand, like if a ship is not perfect and healthy and wondrous it shouldn’t be shipped. Ship your fictional characters any way you want, as long as you tag things properly! Be free of the need to be judged!)

!!!! You’re writing a post-Picard Raffi/Seven story?!

Yeah!! To be honest it's less writing and more planning/sketching out ideas I like. It's technically an AU because it's set on an original ship called "Perseverance" rather than the Ent G (I started writing some of it before Picard s3 ended and didn't feel like reworking it especially because I really enjoyed making a bunch of OCs and didn't want to sideline them). It's mostly a project to take a lot of the Picard era worldbuilding that I think is super cool (the destruction of Romulus, xBs, synths) as well as some original ideas and putting it in the style of a more 90s era mostly episodic show that swings from darker character studies to lighthearted romps and has some canonical characters (obviously Seven & Raffi as well as Janeway, Naomi Wildman, Soji, Elnor, etc making appearances) but also with a strong focus on OCs.

I became really fascinated the past few months with how hopeless the Federation and Starfleet became after the Romulan supernova/destruction of Mars in Picard season 1 and how they might realistically recover so a lot of the stories have a focus on the flaws of Starfleet/the Federation and how to solve them from the point of view of people like Seven & Raffi who have been screwed over or subjected to prejudice while still maintaining the optimism that should always be in Star Trek. (As well as just having fun developing Seven & Raffi's relationship, worldbuilding, and doing my take on ridiculous stock trek plots.)

I have the first "season" (20 episodes) planned with two episodes fully written + a bunch of random excerpts and some ideas for future seasons including one episode fully written for season 2. It's one of those projects that I know I'm not actually going to end up drafting and posting because I should really be working on other things but it's fun and tbh a good writing exercise to at least write notes for what every episode would look like.

Some of my OCs for this include:

Chief of Security Lt. Cmdr Hannah Nguyen: a human who as a teen/young adult was haunted by her dad's death in the Dominion War and acted out but eventually was given a chance to join Starfleet and has tried to bury her fears under layers of eccentricity and jokes and is now having a hard time adjusting to being a leader

Ops Officer Lt. Kelen Taan: a Trill who gains a symbiont halfway through s1 and realizes that even though they achieved what every Trill's dream *should* be, they feel even less like a complete person than before they were joined

Chief Engineer Lt John: John is from a pre-warp world that was devastated by the Romulan supernova and only escaped because of a crashed shuttle. His people are entirely telepathic and don't have a concept of language so he often feels unable to communicate and form lasting relationships (but he works on it!)

Pilot Ensign Isha Kulhari: a human and recent Academy grad who is Idealistic and Determined to do the right thing but sometimes her faith in inherent goodness wavers as she really sees the universe but still chooses kindness and hope.

Dr Sovel Dahir: a half-human half-Vulcan who was raised by humans on Earth and has a lot of issues connecting to their Vulcan heritage and culture because they don't believe that logic can solve everything.

Counselor Lt Cmdr Mateusz Binkowski: an old friend of Raffi's from before she was discharged (and subsequently reinstated) who's had a lifelong Starfleet career but harbors a dark secret about something he did in the Dominion War as a young man.

Some of the ideas I'm particularly proud of are:

a courtroom episode involving a legal case about whether xBs as a group should granted asylum into the Federation. Seven is called to testify but is hesitant to go because she's spent so long trying to distance herself from being an xB because of her trauma and to gain others' respect and now she doesn't know how to connect to this huge group built on a shared trauma

the tried and tested sex pollen episode. it's cringe and silly but it was so much fun to write a ridiculous comedy that also digs at some of the complexities of Seven and Raffi's relationship and whether it can work out for them as captain and xo

the ship is dragged through to another universe where there's a version of the Federation that's obsessed with scientific progress at any cost with no consideration for morality. We find a version of Seven (or rather Annika) never assimilated by the Borg who's leading a project to break through to other universes to explore but might be endangering the walls of reality. (similar to the mirrorverse this becomes a recurring setting)

breaking away from our main characters, we follow a group of Romulan refugees turned pirates as they plan to break in to and loot the ship. it'll be one part fun genre heist story and one part stark look at how refugees are demonized and forced to turn to crime

a Borg cube is discovered in Federation space and Seven is sent to investigate (and destroy it) along with her chief of security, Nguyen. Nguyen has a deep fear of the Borg which she's never admitted to Seven (or anyone) and spends the story combatting her fears and trying to come up with a way to save the drones as proof that she can act beyond her fears. Meanwhile Seven, battling her own demons and self-hate, insists that the cube needs to be destroyed. It's told in media res through a therapy session.

What's legacysmp? I feel like ive heard u talk abt it but i dont actually know what it is

I definitely talk about it a fair bit, though there are some other peeps on here who talk about it more (@ndn-craft is the first to come to mind).

Legacy SMP was a Minecraft SMP with some at-the-time smaller creators - although you'd probably recognize a lot of the season 1 names, as it had people like Pearlescentmoon, GeminiTay, MythicalSausage, PythonGB, and I think Scott and Jimmy as well. I'm not as familiar with the season 1 shenanigans, although I have watched some and heard about others. LogicalGeekBoy and Sausage were in an ongoing rivalry about being the "one true king" (they both built castles. Logic's was built out of dirt); ChimneySwift started the Church of the Holy Bee.

They ended off season 1 by fighting a bunch of Withers in a specially built arena made by slicedlime (who you may note is also a Mojang developer)... and the Withers canonically destroyed the world. This is where I got more familiar with it, because I started with Skizzleman and ZloyXP, who joined in season 2. Legacy season 2 is one of my favorite mcrp things that I've ever watched. They escaped season 1 through a magical Rift they made (which I've referenced in every single fic I've done about the Hermitcraft/Empires Rift lol) and lived in a post-apocalyptic desert for months with the Withers hounding them in various ways. Uniquely, the viewers controlled what the Withers did! They had some magical plugin that let you vote for options on their website and then every two weeks the winning option was implemented in game. It was incredible.

Also slicedlime got possessed by the Withers at one point. Logic was playing a long-game ARG with his megabase. There was an advancement race using an advancement datapack and that suddenly became plot-relevant. The Church of the Holy Bee came back but only to the extent of being in a graveyard that signified that all the season 1ers were technically already dead. Late in the season cc!Logic had some IRL stuff come up so c!Logic got kidnapped by the Withers and never returned except as a ghost to warn the others to leave for season 3. A lot of the smaller creators drifted away and eventually the SMP officially shut down halfway through season 3, but it was an incredible journey.

CRIMSON SMP - SEASON 6 / S2

HI OK so we just finished up our second session of CSMP and I'm once again here to provide a summary of it for the masses [anyone who cares]. For context about this please check out the first post I made :]

SUMMARY

So the session started out pretty uneventful. As people started to log on and get situated, I started building something to serve as a base while discussing with Max and Maven our plans for the session. In short, our plans came out to scam people with the enchanter and mine for resources since we were broke. Not a bad plan, but not the most eventful.

Maven messaged Log and Millie about using the enchater, and we met with them at spawn to make a deal. They'd get to enchant in exchange for 20 iron and 20 arrows. Not the most balanced deal, but it was the only way to get enchantments so they accepted. While they were enchanting, Max worked to light up spawn and made an offhanded comment about things likely being safer if the spawn forest wasn't there. So I burnt it down for fun. Arson!

After the deal was done, we messed around with Log and Millie a bit before returning to our base to prepare to mine. Maven went off on his own to strip mine, while Max and I went off to find a cave.

On the way, we crossed by Stevie and Meg's base, who were talking about wanting to explore a mineshaft below their house. The two of us asked if we could join them, and they agreed. Thus begins our mining trip.

Things start off pretty smoothly - the four of us work our way through the mineshaft, mainly picking up iron and coal since that's what we went down for. Things started to get stressful about halfway through when Stevie and Meg have their first near-death experience at the hands of a few stray cave spiders, and then their second one about 10 minutes later at a significantly larger amount of stray cave spiders. The first close call brough them down to about 3 hearts I think and the second down to half a heart.

Nothing of note happens for another few minutes, until Max runs into some cave spiders, gets knocked into a cave, and loses us our first life to the hands of a skeleton. A true series of unfortunate events.

Stevie and Meg are able to recover most of my items, but Max's are in a pit full of mobs and are left to despawn for safety. Stevie agrees to return my items once they escape the cave, which leaves me and Max itemless for a while. So, we decide to go around to other peoples bases and beg for literally anything like sickly Victorian children.

The first group we end up finding is Millie and Log - or ChampDuo as they're known as - who have a house along the border. Turns out they are also broke and we don't get anything from them, but still stay there for a while since it's nighttime and Max and I were scared. While staying there, a witch appears out of no where and chases the four of us away from there, and we split away from ChampDuo after that.

The second group we ended up finding was the new house of The Fairies, but only Vin and Jonah were there at the time and are also broke. We take a mental note of their base location and leave to head back to our own base.

On the way, we pass by Tango and Tills base while they're out, loot a few things from their chests, and then spend the break there.

After break, Max and I head home and split up shortly there after, Max to go strip mining and me staying up top to build a bit. While I'm building, Stevie, Meg, and Sky all come by and hang out for a bit and return my items while I finish building Couples Therapy. Cause why not have Couples Therapy in Double Life. They probably could've used it in the original one.

I give some really bad advice to all three of them in a very poor attempt to mend their relationships, when Stevie says he hasn't seen anyone outside of this small group of people for most of the session. So I take them all to The Fairies house. And, honestly, I would love to explain what happens there, but it was just- we were all being idiots that's all I'm gonna say about that. Nearly the whole server was there it was- it was something. I think Maven kidnapped Keno during it but honestly I think Maven just wanted to kiss other men.

At the end of my stay, Jonah comes over to say goodbye and I invite him to come with me since I don't wanna go back alone. He said he didn't want to abandon his team to be with me [again], and so I invited Vin along as well, which technically counts as not abandoning your team for the person who's only really shown loyalty to you for the past several seasons, right?

We go home, and the two of them talk about how they're bored since Keno and Ren aren't really up for causing too many problems this season and they want to be a menace to society. I suggest the idea of them teaming up with me and Max since we think Maven is kissing other men, and they're on board for it. Max gets home, I inform him that they're down to team up, and - while he's hesitant at first - agrees since him and Vin also have seasons worth of lore to their dynamic. The session ends shortly after.

Honestly kind of feeling like I wanna betray and kill them, but we'll see if I end up doing that.

the epic highs and lows of walter wolf racing

yes, it's the canadian team that rocked f1 in the late 70s! named after walter wolf, who was massively wealthy and decided to throw his money into racing. it doesn't sound promising—but he took cars more seriously than most other hopeful entrants.

ask not what he's doing with that yarn.

we're examining the highs of this venture, and the lows as well. buckle in, strap up. we have some careers to propel and destroy (and only 4 years to do it in).

part 0.5 - wolf-williams

first, we have to start with where the team began: as wolf-williams, in partnership with frank williams (yes, that frank williams) in 1976. good ol' walt had been hanging around the races for the previous year and thought it looked fascinating, so he decided to get some cars together (basically from the remains of the hesketh organization, which had just flopped) and snag some drivers as well.

who did he choose? well, one of them was jacky ickx, who was the first of the drivers to find his career...um, stalling with wolf. after only half a season (in an utter dog of a car, it must be said) jacky was dropped from the team and never really did anything outstanding in f1 again.

it starts off low, people.

part 1 - the first joyous years with jody

it wasn't the best start for a new team, especially once walter kicked out frank williams and installed peter warr in his place (some people might have opinions on this!). still, for the 1977 season, the team was going to go ahead as walter wolf racing. finally!

because the team was financed solely by one man —a really rich man, but still— there was usually only one seat in the team throughout its tenure, meaning no teammates.

but who secured that one seat? that's right: jody scheckter.

yes, jody with a massive canadian flag on his back before he'd joined up with gilles. fate!

and the truly, truly incredible thing, what really sets wolf apart from other teams (like hesketh, for the most part) is that wolf was genuinely good right from the very beginning. i mean that literally - they won the first race they entered!

(this is the epic high i was talking about.)

buenos aires, 1977. really getting into the spirit of winning!

of course they couldn't win every race that came their way, but what they did achieve in 1977 was fourth place in the constructor's championship (impressive for a team with only one driver) and second in the wdc for jody. nothing to sneeze at! and it very firmly set jody up as a world-class driver in his own right...someone that ferrari might take an interest in, perhaps...

his three wins that season (yes, canada in a canadian team — you get it)

but we're getting ahead of ourselves. jody still had one more year with wolf before tossing it in to move to ferrari, and it was another decent season - although not as spectacular as the year before. still, the team's performance was enough to entice world champion james hunt over for 1979.

part 2: james hunt, the decline and fall

yes, james went to the team which had risen from the ashes of hesketh, his debut constructor (everything is so delightfully connected in this sport).

sadly, the 1979 season was not destined to be anyone's greatest. james memorably quit halfway through the season and never raced in formula one again, becoming the second of wolf's drivers not to finish out a year. so, after limping on with a replacement driver (nobody special, keke something or other) for the remaining races, walter wolf gracefully threw in the f1 towel.

unfortunately, we end on a truly epic low.

part 3: conclusion (and...gilles?)

or wait! that's just the story for the formula one team. what about can-am?

see, walter's ambitions weren't limited to f1 only. no, in his can-am cars he installed a young canadian whippersnapper by the name of gilles villeneuve, who he might have enticed over to his f1 team if only james hunt hadn't snapped him up for mclaren. and then if gilles himself hadn't decided to transfer to ferrari to be jody scheckter's teammate...

what did i say? oh yeah - everything is connected!

I feel like Nini is so seperated from the rest of the group. All the rest of the girls are singing this song about friendship and how it's more important than stuff like being the best while she left just to try to have a better shot at being a famous actor

I heard a theory that they just let Nini in so they could get her tuition money knowing she would drop out immediately

Now I can't think of the scene where to dean asks her how she's doing as anything other then her trying to gauge how long it'll take her to drop out

EJ giving Ashlyn a shoulder pat because he's happy that another student is using her song to audition

"The kids got the charm, the kids got the voice" sometimes Miss Jenn is just a little too supportive of Ricky and Nini. And like she's dating his dad. I'm gonna stop thinking about this now

some tips for writing blogs, especially those who are just starting out. these are some things that works for me and may or may not work for others.

how to add a read more link on mobile

type :readmore: on a free space, then hit the enter or return button

personally i think they’re very helpful because it lessens the space you take up in your dash, and might encourage more people to rb

+ you can also add this on a spot where it gives a sort of cliffhanger, essentially making people want to ‘read more’

headers, banners, and dividers

though not necessary, it’s good to have a title for your work. make sure it’s bold and doesn’t blend in with your notes (aka pairing, warnings, etc.). this also helps when someone wants to look up one of your works in your search bar

i don’t really make banners or covers for my works. but some good apps that i know of would be picsart and canva. if you’re looking for ideas, i definitely recommend going into canva

wondering how to make those really small, thin dividers? you can make them using picsart! to make a divider hit tools > free crop > brush > size (adjust it to your preference > then draw a line along the edge of your photo > save

using the divider you just saved, go back to picsart and edit it again > draw option > hit rainbow square at the bottom left corner > hit suction/droplet symbol right below the check mark > color in the white spots bc for some reason picsart glitches and makes dividers look white-ish

new blog? just opened an account?

this is gonna sound really frustrating. but... tumblr needs to check if you’re a bot or not. what does this mean? it’s likely that your first few posts won’t show up on the search bar. you may not even get to edit your header/pfp yet ://

this happened to me and there was no visibility on my account at ALL. what helped me get ‘verified’ is that i followed a LOT of accounts, liked a bunch of posts, made some posts here and there. now that lets tumblr know you’re not a bot

visibility

the tumblr tagging system usually only allows the first 5 tags in your post to show up. so, what can do you about this? only use FIVE or less tags in your post. wait about 15 minutes or more until you can add some more tags in your post, and they usually all show up like that

another important thing about using tags is not to generalize! especially if you’re using a popular tag. but also don’t specify it too much where barely anyone looks it up. for example, if you’re writing a gn piece about oikawa, i recommend you use the tags such as: oikawa x reader, haikyuu x reader, oikawa x gn!reader, haikyuu headcanons, etc

a good rule of thumb is to use character x reader tags first, then leave the full name or fandom tag last

FOR NSFW: tumblr doesn’t let any tags with nsfw show up. so, give your nsfw works another tag. maybe #namegetspicy idk, you figure it out

FOR WARNINGS: especially if you’re a dark content creator, i highly encourage you to add tw:xyz tags. if you already have a warning note at the top then that’s great. but even better for readers who prefer to actually block these tags that way they never get to see it

another important thing to note is that people have different timezones. it helps if you rb your work at a different time of the day, in case people missed it! (icymi) i’ve noticed that reblogging helps to make your post show up in the tags

interaction + feedback

first and foremost, you are not obligated to write for your followers, and neither are your followers obligated to interact with you. remember that everyone has their own individual lives, and they have their own things to do— so do you, too.

make friends! become mutuals with other writers, visit their ask box. i know it can be daunting having to initiate these things, but you might just turn out to have fun! you can’t expect people to interact with you if you’re not interacting (back). it’s... kind of a two way thing yk? no need to be afraid to interact with other writers. oh, and rb other writers works!

pspsps join tag games or do ask games. it’s fun and very interactive

it never hurts to ask for feedback. i usually do this in a more subtle way because i don’t really expect a full on analysis on my works. maybe a little, is this okay? or feedback appreciated. sometimes it takes a little bit of coaxing for the silent readers

formatting your posts and blog

i generally put in the title at the top in big, bold letters

then comes the header/divider. helps to make the post more... visually appealing ig?

it’s important to add warnings (if any) and the pairing. the audience is not all female, and it might be a little frustrating for male readers having to find out its an x fem reader piece like halfway through your fic

if you have multiple works posted, it’s really really helpful to have a navigation page!

you can organize the posts you make with tags! for example, if you’re shitposting, you can use a specific tag for that. if you have a nsfw related post (ESPECIALLY when your blog is open to the general audience) please make a tag for it

themes + colors

if you have a color in mind but don’t know which direction to go from there, i recommend looking up color + aesthetic

looking to use the same color? download a name color app that’ll give you a hex code for any color you want to use. then, you can type in that hex code for when you’re choosing a color for your tumblr bio

wondering how to make your header image small like mine? just choose a photo for your header and turn off the stretch image option

want to use a different text color that tumblr doesn’t offer? it’s not as complicated as you think. you’ll have to go on a desktop to do this and do some html (but trust me, it’s not very difficult). look up “HTML noob but trying my best - how to use colored text on desktop”

^^ i don’t have the link for the color text tutorial so you can try looking it up

how to make an aesthetic navi and masterlist

step 1: decide a theme! if you’re stuck, think about a character + color/season/mood or look up “[insert] aesthetic” to find some inspiration. or you can try looking at other blogs too

step 2: find a color scheme! it’s easier if you choose fewer colors. if you want to use the same color for both divider and text, download a color name app in order to get the hex code of that color.

step 3: add categories to your navi! most navigation pages include a link to masterlist, about/byi, and rules. your navi should have a title that indicates that it’s... a navigation page. you can add thin colored dividers with the same color to make it easier for followers to navigate

step 4: you can choose to create a ‘cover’ or a picture for your navigation and masterlist! again, i recommend you use the canva app as a starting point

extra: search up emoticon symbols to spice up your titles!

reminder for you as a writer

you’re not obligated to do any of these things. i’ve noticed that we tend to build pressure on ourselves when it comes to content and interaction. remember, this !! is !! for !! fun !! when you realize that it’s no longer fun, then know that it’s time to take a break. and there’s nothing wrong with a bit of self care.

<.< that Red John story arc needs a fix-it fic asap. I am aware it is 2022 and the Red John reveal happened back at the end of 2013 and that the show itself ended in 2015. I blame the fact i had just graduated college and was starting a new job. I'm catching up, forgive me, halfway through season 6 right now. Sure I'll finish by the end of the week. Anyways back to the fix-it fic want and need. I will caveat; the Red John reveal is great, love who they chose for it, makes perfect sense actually, also love that actor a lot, especially as a villian cause he has a colloquial manner that makes him appear trustworthy and fatherly but than the actor can really pull out the evil villian routine with a 1000 yard stare acting. The Red John showdown was also good but because of the flaws in the buildup to the reveal and showdown it isn't as great as it could have been.

Biggest issues are:

1. Red John knowing about the list: I don't mind the list. In fact I loved it. Just didn't like the whole RJ knowing about it bit. Also Haffner and Reed didn't need to be on it. The other 5 are perfect suspects. But RJ knowing that Patrick suspected specifically who he was kind of took the cat and mouse game thrill out of the equation. Like every time Jane or the team met with one of the suspects the implication is that RJ knew they knew. And that's no fun. I liked Jane having a one up on RJ without RJ's knowledge and frankly the gymnastics that a writer has to go through and still hasn't explained to justify how RJ knew about the list is unneeded. There was a lot more story ammo and plot to be had if RJ did not know about the list.

2. The Blake Organization: Ew. Not needed. Ruined the whole motivation behind RJ for me. I contend that RJ had a loose organization of corrupted individuals he patroned and encouraged/corrupted while also cherry picking certain people that made it to top key positions in gov't and law enforcement to curtail his and his proteges' from being arrested. This was actually hinted and alluded to throughout the beginning seasons and I loved that cause it ties into what I think RJ's motivations are.

Red John is evil. He doesn't want power or money. He wants to rape and murder and see fear in the eyes of his victims and slaughter lambs. And he wants to make more tygers to slaughter those lambs. That's the point of the whole Blake poem, not as some chintzy password for a self-promoting and self-aggrandizing heirarchal command structure. That's what the Visualize foil was for. The inclusion of the Blake organization takes away from what matters in my head. RJ's motivations.

3. Red John's Motivations at the end are wrong: (Personal Opinion) RJ is obsessed with Jane. Because RJ feels lonely. He's incredibly smart, hence his ability to manipulate and to elude capture. He longs for someone he can share that with. He's also evil and he wants people to accept his evil needs so he finds those like him and encourages it. He tricks people like Lorelei Martins into corrupting themselves. And, though he murdered Jane's wife and daughter as punishment for Jane's hubris and slights, I think when Jane joined CBI and after RJ had time to look into Jane's background, RJ began to view Jane as a challenge. Could he corrupt someone without tricking them? Could he convince someone to be like him? Could he make someone who hates him, love him? Someone like Jane who has darker tendencies and strengths but wasn't like RJ from the beginning. Could he draw Jane's evil out of him? Those are RJ's motivations for me. Not some silly power play secret society allusions of grandeur. Just a profoundly disturbed human trying to make the world burn with him.

Conclusion: <.< ....... I'm gonna write a goddamn fix it fic. The conclusion to Jane and Red John's story deserved better. Wasn't bad, again, wasn't bad. But it could have been great.

Also because of the strange convolution in the buildup to the reveal we lost sight of Jane's motivation. Though Simon Baker is a PHENOMENAL actor that managed to reassert that lost motivation right back in at the end. God his facial expressions and how he said their names. Good stuff. Good stuff. Like I said the showdown was great. Just could have been better.

So I'll make it better. We'll see if I finish this time.

why are people willing to believe moffat is the worst person on earth? is he really that bad or is this just a huge telephone game and after each round the rumour worsens and no one cares about the truth anymore?

It’s difficult to describe unless you were deep into fandom on this website in 2012 and the way people turned on him so quickly. I mean first, he’s a man who’s said and written dumb things, he ran two of the some of most popular British shows on the planet at the same time and still gets to make whatever he wants (see dracula) so he’s doing fine.

But it was kind of a domino effect that started with doctor who. Series 5 was a big success, and the next one went overseas with a huge two part premiere set in america, capitalizing on the overseas effect that had been growing with David tennant’s era, so it naturally garnered a lot of new viewers. The issue comes with the River Song twist halfway through the season and the episode after the summer break, Let’s Kill Hitler, which admittedly is one of his weakest scripts, hampered by a rough production schedule. The previous show runner Davies also suffered a lot from the gruel of doctor who and it affected his scripts a lot too. So from what I remember the hitler episode in 2011 kind of hit on a couple nerves people had been dreading, 1. Making light of a serious historical event 2. The other twist of casting a black actress for a character retconned into Amy and Rory’s life only for her to turn into River less then ten minutes later, using race to obscure audience expectations 3. The script being messy - from the regeneration stuff, the robot replica solution which people felt was a cop out in the finale, and the “let’s find River Song” subplot being wrapped up in one episode which rushes everything, adding to the wound of 4. Amy being passive in a mystery pregnancy storyline, which resulted in 5. The biggest criticism of River being that her entire existence revolves around the doctor, and finally 6. Everything revolving around the doctor for no reason. I don’t entirely agree with these, especially the first and last one, but the second half of series 6 and first half of 7 is inconsistent. So after those two episodes people were writing a lot of posts explaining their issues with his take on the show, which would continue through series 7 (Asylum of the Daleks in particular and the finale also join his weakest scripts - 2012/2013 for doctor who was rough and seemed to be motivated again, by scheduling and production issues, he’s talked about it a lot, don’t forget the 50th anniversary was also happening at the time, which was good). The criticisms have merit, but they were overblown by other factors too.

On Sherlock the River Song issue kind of exploded again after ASIB with Irene aired in early 2012. The appearance of the story being Irene falling for a man after describing herself as gay upset people. We’ve been over this a lot. The atmosphere was very different on tumblr at the time… like it was hardcore 24/7 dedication. Everything that happened on our television screens was life or death. Ships getting together or characters getting fridged had mortal consequences. I think it’s easy to forget now but this place was often of miserable after series 2 lol. There was a lot of positive activity and creativity, but also lots of people complaining about everything. It was kind of a formative year for transformative work in fandom. Nearly every tv show I was watching at the time had a fandom that hated it and it’s writers in return, deeply and constantly. Supernatural, glee, teen wolf, so many things. So we’d write tag essays in our reblogs describing in explicit detail how we felt about story, characters, theme, characters arcs, and how we knew better (and tbh we were usually right), read and reblog people writing meta and callout posts like it was a job, and constantly trying to either break the fourth wall with our demands or catch the writers of the month in the act so we could add another bulletpoint to the list proving we were right. No one was ever calm. It was a battle of attrition. It wasn’t really about changing anything, though we hoped we could. Twitter’s a perfect place for that.

He also had the expectations of the old doctor who fans to keep up with on top of new viewers, even though the Davies era has most of the same problems. Running two super popular shows with mega fandoms magnified the exposure so much it was basically an ant against a magnifying glass in terms of numbers. So eventually he left twitter and kept show running, but a lot of people didn’t see series 8-10 of DW to see how the show changed, nevermind what’s going on with Sherlock lol. The scriptwriting process for the two is also so different there’s no comparing them but the callouts surrounding Sherlock are a different story. It started with doctor who coming to america, which no one should ever do.

+ 1 Time He Stayed

Summary: How you, Leon and Connor became a thing

1) The “Accidents”

Leon gets your text message a second too late. The notification with your name and “DON'T OPEN MY SNAP” hanging above the picture of your scantily clad torso, matching royal purple set, the deep colour complimenting your tan skin. Leon is torn between wanting to be respectful and wanting to keep the picture open until he can get himself off. But, he’s a good dude so he does not do the latter. Instead, he closes the snap and texts you back

Leon: Whoops. I didn’t get your message until after I opened it

You: Ugh. I’m sorry, your name is right under Connor’s and my finger slipped.

Leon: Aren’t you supposed to be at school.

You: Stats are boring. I was trying to bother my boyfriend.

Leon: Pay attention in class, (Y/N).

You: 🙄

You: You can keep the picture btw. I know I look good

You: No face, no case

Leon doesn’t keep it but, his finger hovers over the replay button for far too long.

Leon’s furnace craps out on him halfway into the season, and Alberta winters without heaters isn’t very enjoyable so he temporarily moves in with Connor, the day of the charity gala. Leon has a good time for the most part. Except -

He can’t get that fucking picture out of his head. And your dress hugs you in all the right places and he really hopes that neither you or Connor notice that how often he looks over at you. Connor has to rub elbows with the rich donor more than Leon does, so he keeps you company in between rounds. The two of you keep yourselves entertained by comping up with potential conversations for the other people in the room.

“Leon wait,” you say, clutching his arm and Leon feels his heart skip a beat, “That girl is his daughter, not his sugar baby.”

“No,” Leon was convinced, they were sitting way too close if that were true, “How do you know?”

You point to an older lady that’s approaching the table. She leans down to give the man a quick kiss and Leon’s about to propose a potential mistress until he realizes the girl looks like a younger version of the older woman.

“Shit,” he says and you look at him with wide eyes, “We’re going to hell.”

“We totally deserve it too.”

An hour later, Leon is excusing himself from a conversation with Klefbom and an older lady. She hardly notices, her attention has been focused on Oscar the whole time. Oscar tries to get him to stay but Leon thinks her not-so-subtle flirtation is hilarious.

He laughs when he gets the “I’m gonna fucking kill you” text from Oscar on the way to the bathroom.

Leon: I don’t like being the third wheel

Leon: Make sure she’s not married, klef. You’d be a terrible mistress

Oscar: I would be the best mistress in the history of mistresses.

When Leon opens the door to the bathroom he’s met with the sound of moans. He supposes he should have shut the door right then and there but he opens it all the way without realizing. He’s met with the sight of Connor fucking you on the sink. Your nails are digging into his back as Connor fucks you. He’s frozen for a moment, can’t remember how to move his limbs until you meet his eyes. He’s fairly certain you smile at him but he’s also convinced he imagined it. He replays your moans and tiny whimpers in his head.

He’s not even surprised when he wakes up the next morning and the girl next to him looks a little like you when he squints.

A week later he’s coming home from a run, the weather had warmed up enough for a short 15 minute jog before he had to pack for the California road trip. He lets himself in through Connor’s garage door, taking off his snowy boots in the mudroom. He takes his earbuds out, pocketing them when he hears -

“I - fuck, don’t tease me.”

Now, Leon is kind of annoyed. He texted Connor that he was on his way home, had given him ample time to move to his bedroom. And Leon has to pass the living room to get to the guest room.

“You’re such a brat,” he hears Connor say and the next thing that comes out of his mouth is a loud groan.

Leon has to start packing, they need to be at the airport in an hour. He tries to make his appearance quick and minimal but he meets Connor’s eyes. He mouths, sorry as he picks up the pace, but Connor doesn’t seem to mind. His face is flushed, and his chest is rising and falling quickly. Connor winks at him. Winks.

When he finally makes it to his room he slumps against the walk, leaving the door open a crack so he can hear Connor’s moans. He can’t help it anymore, he pulls the waistband of his pants down, gripping his dick. He has to bite down on his hand to keep his moans at bay. He cums in unison with Connor, using his moans to guide him to finish.

Not-Connor’s name is Josh, and they hit off right away.

Soon, Leon’s pushing not-Connor up against the bathroom wall, grinding against him. Not-Connor gets down on his knees and sucks Leon off.
