Warnings: FLUFF, freezing weather, big snowstorm, walking home in the snowstorm, reader takes a bath and wears buckys clothes but thers no mention of any details plus bucky aint in the room ALPINE!!

The weather over the past few months was absolutely all over the place from warm sunny days to bitter cold windy and rainy days straight back to the sunny but cold days like the shift between fall and winter was indecisive on if it wanted to happen just yet.

Having checked the weather on the news this morning, the forecast said it’d be cold but it didn’t prepare for what you would find on your walk home from work.

Bucky and you had planned to stop at the café after work to combat the cold hands you would endure on your way home like you had to this morning.

Stepping out the front door of the tower onto the frozen sidewalk, taking a look around to see snow spinning and swirling into drifts along the sides of the road, against cars and the sides of the building. Most of the shops and businesses around closed early, lights out, doors locked for the unplanned blizzard.

The streets dead of life and light beyond you and Bucky standing under the dim cast from the streetlights.

“We gotta get outta this as soon as possible or we’ll get stuck” he chuckles leading the way.

The snow being the most shallow towards the middle of the street making it the best place to walk as no one is driving anywhere in weather like this. Thick clusters of falling snow making it hard to see where you’re going, the tiny flickers of faint blue light just barely reflecting off of the snow in front of your every step.

After just a few minutes of stumbling your way following Bucky through the drifts, you slip on what you would assume to be ice under the snow, your body becoming friends with gravity’s pull, landing with an oomph and a soft thud cradled by the mostly untouched powder beneath you.

Bucky hurriedly turned around to find you sprawled on your back in the snow, helping you up and dusting the back of your sweater off the best he can, the snow melting and seeping through your layers of clothing pulling a chilled huff from you, refusing to let your body shiver no matter how cold you are so not to worry Bucky. Your huff catching his attention, “you okay, doll?” Looking back at you next to him, “yea, just clearing my throat” you shrug playing it off, with reluctance he accepts your response, taking your hand in his own, “you’re not goin down again, ya hear me?” He shakes your hand, making you laugh, “got it sarg”

Another five minutes and you’ve only seen three people outside and one of them was just outside to smoke.

A shiver finally wracking your body making you gasp, your jaw starting to chatter catching Bucky’s attention once again, stopping he removes his jacket and gloves, turning to you, “take off your sweater and take my jacket instead” he holds it out for you to take.

Putting your hands up to stop him “you’re going to get cold, I’m fine buck”

He shakes his head not taking no for an answer.

Normally he isn’t the pushy type unless one of his friends is in need of something, “please y/n, the cold doesn’t bother me, you need it more than I do, plus I’m almost home, you’ve still got a bus ride to take” with a huff and a shiver you unzip your soaked sweater slipping it off and letting Bucky help you into his, he takes your sweater, draping it over his left arm, helping you button up his big puffy canvas carhartt jacket with Sherpa lining, already warming you up a bit, he takes one of your hands and shoves one glove onto it, doing the same for the other before you got the chance to decline his offer.

“Buckyyy”, “nope, you don’t get to Bucky me, you’re not a super soldier, you’re staying warm”

Your arms dropping in defeat.

You continue until you get to Bucky’s complex, “do you want to come inside to warm up, or even stay while the storm is here?” He offers, but you decline, “ill be fine buck, besides I don’t want to be a bother, now go inside before I decide to give you your jacket back” you threaten, so with heavy reluctance he does, you continue on your walk, your phone dinging, a message from bucky, “let me know when you get on the bus”.

Shoving your phone into the pocket of the jacket, still shivering from the bitter wind and icy water against your face, luckily your bus stop is only a block away from his apartments.

Arriving, you try to look at the schedule board but the glass is frosted over, taking off your gloves, you check the online bus schedule, you’re faced with bold red letters, “ALL ROUTES CANCELED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE DUE TO SNOWSTORM “

It hadn’t even occurred to you that busses weren’t running, you hadn’t even realized there weren’t any running routes, you were to focused on getting home, Bucky’s gloves still held between your teeth, hands trembling trying to type in a message to Bucky through watering eyes, the wind circling around, stumbling from the sway of every gust, giving up on texting you resort to hitting the call button on Bucky’s contact.

With luck on your side he picks up on the second ring “hey doll, did you get to the stop in time? Are you okay?”, you pull the gloves from between your teeth, putting them in your pocket “uhm, yeah I’m okay, but I don’t know what I’m supposed to do buck, its so cold and the busses are canceled, I cant walk two miles in this weather while its still getting worse” you drone on, ranting when he interrupts you, “come to my place Hun, I’m on my way as well, ill see you yea?”

Nodding as if he could see it, the hang up dial tone telling you, you could shove the phone back into your pocket and put the gloves back on.

Crossing your arms over your body and putting your hands between your arm and torso on each side to add a little more warmth, you stumble through soft fluffy, frozen and compacted layers, the wind causing you to sway and walk in the direction it blows you can barely see in front of you.

You’re going the right way you just cant see where you are exactly, that is until you hear snow crunching coming towards you and your name being called out through the bitter Whooshing wind.

Bucky runs up to you pulling you into his chest, “lets get you inside as soon as possible, were less than a block away, I’ve got you” violent trembles wracking your body, the cold biting through the jacket now, your joints start to hurt from the barometric pressure drop, earlier it had only been an ache but now it hurts to move.

Finally you reach Bucky’s apartment, kicking your boots on the doorstep edge to loosen any remaining snow.

Inside he ushers you out of the jacket gloves and into the bathroom, plugging the tub, running it warm, but not terribly hot so not to cause you pain from temperature transition, he than leaves the room closing the door on his way out, “ill be right back with a change of clothes and a towel for you. All of such making you laugh as you still tremble.

You rid yourself of your boots and snow-soaked clothing easing into the warm water, the pain in your joints feeling instant relief.

A knock on the door and It opens just enough for him to pass the clothes and towel through setting them on the counter and leaving once more.

Once done with your bath you get out, drying off you turn on the heat lamp and getting dressed, he had left you his red henley and a pair of sweatpants, stepping out you find him in his living room, a fire in the fireplace and an old movie playing on his television.

“How are you feeling?” Sipping at a cup of a steaming liquid another set upon the coffee table, you join him, "much better", pulling a yellow blanket from the back of the couch but he stops you, “here use this one instead, that one is alpines blanket, she doesn’t even let me use it”,

“Alpine?” You question and like clockwork a gorgeous white tomcat hops up onto the cushion between you both, rubbing herself against Bucky’s side and than prances right up to you, sniffing you and without any hesitancy she lays down across your lap.

“She doesn’t even do that with Steve and he’s over here once a week, you must seem special to her”

A little while later after you’ve eaten dinner and watched a couple of movies, you had fallen asleep against his side, encapsulated in the warmth oh him, his home and alpine, it makes his heart melt.

He carefully stands up, picking you up, alpine hopping down before he lifts you all the way, one arm beneath your knees, the other under your shoulders, he takes you to his bedroom, tucking you into his bed, covering you with his blankets.

Alpine hops up curling up on your stomach above the blankets causing him to smile to himself “I’m glad you like them aswell alpine, I hope we can keep them around “ he mumbles under his breath leaving the room to sleep on the couch, it wouldn’t bother him whatsoever as long as you’re safe and happy.

hmmm some random ahit holiday headcanons

- The mafia celebrate a holiday called Fishmas. It's basically Christmas except everything is fish themed. Their holiday lights are shaped like fish. It never snows in mafia town and I'm pretty sure the only trees there are palm trees, so they decorate the palm trees with lights and garlands and stuff. It's chillier than usual in winter even if there's no snow so they might dress a bit warmer than usual but probably not heavy coats or anything

- the people originally from the island don't celebrate that, though, it's just the mafia. Mu used to celebrate a holiday called Star Day with her family. It was celebrated winter solstice (the longest night of the year) and is usually spent stargazing with friends and family. Stories would be shared about constellations, like legends and mythology and stuff. Mu doesn't really celebrate anymore because she doesn't have a way of getting decorations and if she tried to throw a party of any kind the mafia would ruin it, but she might still try to give little gifts to the coffee clerks and stuff.

- idk what they'd call it but I think the owls would like. get a week off of work and school and all that to spend at home with family. Probably a lot of bird food, like idk birdseed pie or something. Conductor spends the holiday with his whole family, they all get together (his brothers, kids, grandkids, etc.) and eat a big meal. They don't really give gifts other than the food, but Cond usually tries to release a holiday movie before then and he'd watch that with his family. It's cold so they hang out around the fire place. Cond probably drinks too much =/

- Penguins just celebrate the new year. Celebrations are pretty much the same as normal (as in our world I mean), but again I think Grooves releases a holiday movie. He gets very dressed up and throws a big party. He would absolutely have those sunglasses that say the year on them. He gets gifts for like, all the penguins, and they all get gifts for him too. How do they determine the time (for midnight) if they're on the moon you ask? Um lol idk I don't care don't talk to me

- Subcon has a very old holiday called Day of the Frost that is based on an old legend that was probably true about a being with ice powers that covered the world in ice and snow. (Very old legend, started long before Vanessa was born, I say it's probably true because someone before her probably had ice powers, maybe even her ancestor or something.) Because of the legend's nature being kinda creepy, the holiday generally has a campfire story kinda tradition (except it's more often around a fireplace instead of a campfire). Snatcher owns a lot of old books that were common day of the frost stories, and he still reads them sometimes around the holidays.

- it does snow in Subcon in winter, but it's usually a pretty light snow (what with the constantly burning forests and shit lol) unless it's near Vanessa's manner, where it gets pecking blizzards. The fire spirits have trouble burning bright enough to die in the cold, but they try to burn as bright as they can, so they might stay indoors or huddle up close to each-other by a fire.

- Alpine celebrates Twilight Fest, which is about celebrating their history and the Twilight Goat through spending time with their community with games and treats. At home, they'd probably eat a lot of soups and pastries, and common festival food would include a lot of sweets and maybe some kind of nut coated in cinnamon or caramel or something. Like Star Day, it can include star gazing and discussion of constellations, but it's usually a bit more focused on ringing bells and playing songs.

- The ocean would be frozen over in winter, so boats would have a hard time going anywhere lol. The Walrus Captain and the seals wouldn't have work because of that. Not sure if they'd have a specific holiday, but they'd get a break from work. I could picture the seals making snowmen or something tbh.

- I think the metro also just celebrates New Year? A lot of the stores probably go on sale for people to buy gifts. A lot of winter-specific foods and drinks at the restaurants, like hot chocolate with peppermint or something. Timmy just goes to McDonyald's to eat chicken nuggets because he doesn't care but Bow would probably love the holiday drinks. A lot of holiday decorations all over the place, lots of pretty lights and stuff.

- Hat and Bow din't really celebrate any winter holidays back home, but they're happy to join their friends to celebrate whatever on this planet. Some of these take place over multiple days, so they have the time to celebrate a buncha stuff. I imagine they'd both prioritize spending time with Mu, just so that she has someone to talk about the island's old holidays with and have a little mini celebration or party. Maybe they'd also get cooking cat, and they'd bake holiday treats together. Hat and Bow could maybe try to get some decorations together for Mu's cave.

- Not sure about badge seller and tourist. Idk if badge is even from that world?? They feel like they might be from another dimension so idk if there are holidays there lol. I can't really picture them celebrating much. Tourist might celebrate something but idk what, he'd probably enjoy travelling around and seeing the winter holidays all over though.

- Hat and Bow like the holiday lights, they put those around the ship. Maybe they give Rumbi a silly little Santa hat or something.

Prompt 15: Portentous

of or like a portent. (A sign or omen)

Character(s): Syren Ligeia (Pre-arr, aged 22/23) Cw:None Word count: 651 Notes: Pre-calamity for this story! Taking a little bit of liberties with this one–this is kind of my own hc on what happened to Camp Riversmeet during the calamity. For context, Syren was part of the Knights with his father and they were both stationed at Camp Riversmeet. Might go back and edit and add to this later. This is just a rough idea I had and the first thing I thought of when I saw this word.

The day was unusually hot and while Syren acknowledged it was in the middle of summer, he also knew being in an alpine climate meant the summer heat was pretty forgiving. But not today. He stood at his post, practically scowling at passerbys as he wiped the sweat from his brow–had he not been on duty with his father, he would’ve ditched his Temple Knight armor for something lighter right then and there. Instead however, he was stuck sweating under the unforgiving sun and vaguely wondering if this was some sort of omen.

“Sy, take a breather,” his father chuckled as he approached with two cups in hand. “You’re scaring everyone away with that scowl of yours.”

“Haha, very funny.” Syren rolled his eyes and accepted the cup of water. His father gestured for him to sit on the crate behind him to which he did, angling himself just enough to stay in the shade but still able to keep watch. “There’s not that many people here to scare off anyways,” he continued slowly, taking note that the Knights stationed here out numbered the adventurers and merchants for once. “This camp is usually bursting with activity but today is just…quiet, and a little eerie if you ask me.”

“Indeed,” his father replied somberly. “I suspect it’s largely due to the battle occuring today, at least from what I’ve overheard. The alliance wanted our men and women to join ranks but the Lord Commander turned them down, said that his Knights were needed here in case of a dragon attack.”

Syren let out a sigh, gazing in his empty cup. “I could hardly blame him for making that choice but I cannot imagine how that will affect our alliance with the rest of Eorzea as a whole.”

“We’re at war, Syren,” his father patted his shoulder. “Difficult decisions have to be made to put our home and people first.”

“I know that but–” Syren stopped short as his father’s expression turned stern, a silent warning to drop the subject. The Viera bit his cheek, looking down at his cup as his grip on it tightened. They’ve had this argument before. He didn’t want to go into it again. Not when they were still on their active assignments. After a few moments of silence, Syren muttered an apology but that was quickly drowned out by the growing murmur around them as the sunlight around them began to fade rapidly.

“Hang on, is that–?”

“What is that?”

“Are you seeing this?”

The Viera stood up abruptly, eyes widening in alarm as he found the source of what everyone was staring at. In the distance of the now cloudy sky was a huge red moon and it was beginning to split open.

“What’s going on other there?!”

“We should go see!”

Syren tried to ignore the scattered voices full of curiosity and fear, turning to his father for orders on what they should do but instead, his words died in his throat as something cold hit his cheek.

“Is that…snow?”

“It’s still warm out! What’s going on?”

As if to confirm, Syren held out his hand, gathering more snowflakes in his hand. A million different questions sprung to his mind that he couldn’t even begin to process, all he knew is that alarm bells were going off in his mind. This was a warning. Something was wrong.

“The hoard!! They’ve come!!”

Everything happened at once. As the red moon in the sky burst open, a sudden wind whipped through the camp bringing along a near-freezing temperature. The small snowfall had turned into a blizzard in a mere blink of an eye. But that didn't stop the dragons from racing toward the camp, already hurling fire at them.

Panic in the camp broke out and despite the cold seeping into his limbs, Syren gathered up his lance and braced for the fight of his life.

anon youre putting a great big grin on my face im flattered and grateful that youre so interested in my thoughts :)

as i said previously, i like to imagine snatchers relationship with the blizzard mirrors princes relationship with vanessa, placing him into the role of a damage suppressor of sorts, even if to define their relationship as purely that would be pretty flat and reductive.

vanessa and prince are both isolated deeply self destructive and dysfunctional people, although definitely not irredeemable. i also dont enjoy the notion of them being "equally toxic" and mistrust those who do, as despite what reasons vanessa might have for her treatment of them, and even if their behavior escalates it, its still a pretty distinctly abusive power dynamic

i think prince (and later on snatcher) is prone to dehumanizing and emotionally isolating theirselves, using those behaviors to substitute self worth with external approval. it receives a lot of praise from vanessa when indulging in those behaviors, which traps them in an abusive relationship with her. vanessa appears to hold a belief of her own disposability, growing fearful of being forgotten or abandoned and such. prince, commonly masking social ineptitude with rigid personal rules, mightve appeared insincere or uninvolved on select occasions, and once he interprets vanessas concern (probably manifesting as violence of some sort from her) as being criticized or otherwise deemed difficult it translates to the implication of it being not worth to be with, which escalates said self dehumanization and isolation as a way to redeem himself and get the needed affection back, ending with him using himself more as a tool to get closer to vanessa instead of a genuine human connection being made. this lack of meaningful reassurance for an unknown reason leads to vanessas belief of own disposability gaining support which leads to an upwards spike in her antagonization of those surrounding her.

ive called the blizzard her personal apocalypse externalized but im not entirely sure what it represents, in shane frosts comics painter/prince ends up as the one cursed, and moonjumpers motivation was to essentially create a human singularity, so, essentially that, probably?.. but on a less conscious level, and only within the confines of her own kingdom. (although there are some painted signs indicative of her presence in alpine skyline, whatever that's meant to imply.. 0_0)

I usually never do these, but I've been tagged by @mossbawn before and she's like the only one on here with good takes on the Gaels, so I felt like I should aknowledge that I'm a person with opinions that are not just based on annoyance.

Favourite time of the year:

Depends on where I am! In Scotland, spring, and in Sweden, deep winter. I love snow and proper cold and being able to go skiing (flat-ground, not alpine), but you just can't do that in Scotland. It's never cold enough.

Comfort foods:

Sausage rolls. Fake vegan mac'n'cheese with flakes, pasta, olive oil, and tofu.

Do you collect anything:

At the moment, old Gaelic books, mostly, if that counts!

Favourite drink:

Hot chocolate made with coconut milk.

A Yeti's windborne howl sounds out across remote mountains striking fear into the hearts of the scattered miners and herders that dwell there. These hulking creatures stalk alpine peaks in a ceaseless hunt for food. Their snow white fur lets them move like ghosts against the frozen landscape. A yeti's icy simian eyes can freeze its prey in place.

Folk of the high peaks travel in groups and go armed knowing that Yetis can smell living prey from miles away. When it finds prey a yeti moves quickly over ice and stone to claim its meal howling to the thrill of the hunt. Even in a blizzard the scent of its quarry draws the Yeti through the cold and snow.

Yetis hunt in solitude or in small family groups. When creatures flee from a Yeti or engage it in battle other Yetis might catch the scent of blood and close in. The territorial Yetis fight one another for the spoils of each battle and Yetis slain in the fight are also eaten amid euphoric howls.

Before an avalanche a blizzard or a deadly frost the Yetis howls sweep down the mountain slopes on the icy wind. Some people of the alpine peaks believe that the voices of loved ones killed in avalanches and blizzards sound out in the wails of the Yetis crying warnings of ill omen. More pragmatic folk attest the Yetis howl as a reminder that despite the great accomplishment of civilization the civilized become the hunted in nature's untamed domain.

When mountain herds are abundant Yetis stear clear of humanoid realms. Driven by hunger they attack humanoid settlements in waves breaking down gates and stockade walls that once might have daunted them then devouring the creeatures within.

Devious mountain folk sometimes use the Yetis as unwitting weapons. A warlord might lay down slaughtered sheep or goats to draw Yetis into an enemy's camp sowing chaos and thinning the ranks before battle. Mountain clan chiefs wanting to expand their territory overhunt local game to diminish the Yetis food supply inspiring attacks on humanoid settlements that are swiftly annexed in the aftermath.

An Abominable yeti is larger than a normal yeti standing 3 times as tall as a human. It typically lives and hunts alone though a pair of abominable yetis might live together long enough to raise young. These towering Yetis are highly territorial and savage attacking and devouring any warm blooded creatures they encounter then scattering the bones across the ice and snow.

Xbox confirms that four of its games will be available on more popular consoles

Microsoft has announced that four formerly exclusive Xbox titles will be made available on the PlayStation and Nintendo platforms. It was also speculated that the corporation would reveal details about the next edition of its Xbox system before the end of 2024.

This step constitutes an important change in the plan of action, rather than focusing on selling hardware such as the Xbox and towards increasing sales of first-party games. Microsoft has found it difficult to compete with the PlayStation since its first console, the XBox, came in 2001. The Xbox 360, which debuted in 2005, originally outsold the PlayStation 3 before falling behind again. With the release of the Xbox One in 2013, the firm changed direction and attempted to sell the machine as a digital-first entertainment device, alienating core gaming enthusiasts while giving the PlayStation 4 a significant boost. By the conclusion of that generation, PS4 consoles had sold over 117 million copies, whereas the Xbox One sold 58.6m.
