ramble ramble ramble ramble zeno beloved ramble ramble ramble ramble
I’m gonna dump akayona thoughts here ‘cause I love this series lots and they make me very happy to ramble about! (warning for spoilers if you’re unaware of anything about zeno or his backstory)
Tumblr media
I don’t see a lot of people analyzing or digging at the things that I do, usually they’re more centered around widely known details and fan favorites and such.
So here we go:
Ever since Zeno wiggled his silly way into the group (the dragons, yoon, hak and yona) he completely threw away all of his self preservation. And you can say “well ofc, he’s there to protect yona” but I think you’d be wrong for simplifying it that way. He's such a complex character. Out of all of them he is the one that stands to be the least affected by Yona’s presence same with the presence of the other dragons. He simply decided to approach them on his own accord, they didn’t approach him. This guy has had to kill and run to protect him from others and from himself for millennia.
Tumblr media
He’s completely lost his purpose in life by the time we meet him in the series, having lost so much and constantly being at odds with the concept of time. But he found that purpose again in protecting the hhb, which is where I bring this back to the previous statement that he completely threw away all his self preservation, or rather he actually gained some.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
During the Xing arc the dragons end up being imprisoned, and Zeno willingly offers himself up to Mizari to have his arm cut off as means to get away easy, but they all outwardly express their disdain toward this. Jae-ha being the one to intervene and avoid Zeno being subjected to such treatment.
Tumblr media
Though I think it should be said that he could’ve easily sacrificed himself for them here, it's just his arm right? But he let's Jae-ha intervene and sway the topic away from him. Despite the fact that he could at any moment throughout the series (after his power has been revealed) when there’s a battle or confrontation, power his way through fights and run away or get help at the drop of the hat but guess what? He doesn’t do that, he stopped doing that for the sake of the others. He instead he chooses to stick by the side of his companions even if he could just as easily tear himself apart or be torn apart in order to help them escape.
A good example is this scene in the current arc:
Tumblr media
Even with the artifact from Hiryuu castle in their presence that causes there powers to amp up and everything, Zeno sits tight, literally. He sits there tied up tight with the others. I bring this scene up as an example because like I previously stated he could just tear himself apart here, now more than ever to help them escape. But he doesn't.
(Whether this is due to his wisdom beyond years or because he doesn't want to upset the other dragons is up in the air for sure but we're gonna say it's cause he doesn't wanna upset the others for the sake of this post)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I feel like it should be explained further, it’s been brought up multiple times throughout the series where Zeno’s partook, especially in anxiety inducing parts, the others don’t like to see Zeno hurt even if he heals, even if he’s used to the pain. They don’t like it, they’ve been very upfront about how much they hate it, how much it scares them to see him injured in ways that would kill any mortal being, in ways it would kill any of them. Seeing him bleed is the worst experience for them. And I think Zeno makes the conscious choice to no longer completely tear himself apart just to escape in order to save them because he doesn’t want to scare them more than they already are in the situations they get involved in. As well as when it wouldn’t be necessary to do so, when they work together just as well to escape without unnecessarily blood being shed.
Tumblr media
Zeno is honestly an enigma of a character, he says a lot but simultaneously says nothing. Which makes me love him even more.
What I’m saying here is all me reading between lines and using my own brain to come up with something that would make sense rather than it being a verbal statement or thought being stated in the series. There’s no real textual evidence that outright states that Zeno has made any of the choices I’ve stated, it’s just my own thoughts surrounding him.
At the end of it all here, I personally believe this is one of the best ways his character could be written, especially as the only one remaining from the original dragons. He gives things away to the group and the readers but only with bits and pieces. The rest is speculation or a matter of putting things together. In my opinion he keeps us hooked into the series, he’s the one character still present that carry’s so much weight and wisdom with him. He’s the one character in the hhb that understands the pain that each separate individual has faced that even they amongst themselves can’t understand.
Tumblr media
They’ve all learned how cruel the world can be, how painful being alive is in their own ways but in my opinion Zeno is the only one that understands their individual experiences infinitely. For crying out loud he knows things that the characters around him don’t even know and that we the readers don’t as well. He’s seen and lived through more life than them all combined, but he still holds onto his humanity albeit rather stubbornly. He still continues to learn and grow and above all else he sees that everyone is human and that there can be/is still good in the world even with all the bad.
Yona maybe be in the title of the series, but Zeno is still just as much of a main character as she is.

Yona and Keishuk as representations of Suwon's feelings and pragmatism.
Disclaimer: Yona, Keishuk and Suwon are obviously their own persons with dozens of more layers than what I talk about in this post. The scenes I use as examples are also about much more than what I use them for here. All of this is just one way I like to read things and I don't claim that the manga is meant to be read that way at all (the contrary honestly). This is just me having fun overanalyzing everything.
Something that has been on my mind since chapter 232 now, is the idea that Yona and Keishuk represent perfectly the duality inside of Suwon. I have loved this trio for all the potential they hold since the castle arc now, and I didn't get as much as I wanted with them at all but this specific page of chapter 232 still makes me "oooooh".
Tumblr media
(Long post under the cut. sorry)
I know the important part comes just after with the "You are needed." Suwon-Yona scene, but I think the composition is super interesting here. Yona and Keishuk are having a full conversation, debating over what to do about Mei-nyan, and Suwon doesn't participate at all (he only enters the conversation next page but doesn't say anything on that matter specifically until chapter 233, when he makes his decision). As if quietly listening to both sides and considering all the points they present. Yes saving Mei-nyan is a bother, why should they do so much for one captive? Yes it's also dangerous to let her in enemy hands given the informations she has against Suwon. It's not farfetched to imagine Suwon can agree to both of their statements. Suwon is hidden by the bubbles of their conversation, erasing himself to give room to their discussion. It's as if we were inside Suwon's head and being a spectator of his trains of thoughts, as if Yona and Keishuk were two parts of Suwon's psyche. They're obviously their own independant characters outside of that with their own merits and personality etc ect but I think it's still interesting to read their dynamic this way.
After all, didn't Yona always represent for Suwon his own feelings? And Keishuk the lack of them? Discarding Yona (and Hak, but I think Yona especially represents that) has always been synonym to discarding his feelings. By discarding her, Suwon discards that he is not a 100% impartial human being that loves (and hates) some people more than others, and that he actually cares and cannot always 100% control his heart. The reason he discarded Yona when the coup happened is because his feelings don't matter from that point on and are directly in the way of his goals. And one of the reason he rejected her so much in the castle and kai battle arcs is exactly because she means something special to him and she keeps trying to appeal to Suwon's heart and feelings (by making several references to Yonhi for example, but also simply by being herself and asking Suwon to save the prisoners, etc) and tries to make the situations personal, two things that Suwon forced himself to stop and not do for a plethora of reasons I won't develop here.
Tumblr media
(About Yonhi, the manga has made a connection between Yona and Yonhi a few times? One thing is Yonhi's hairpin that Yona also wears on one of the magazine cover, and there are the few mentions Yona makes of her in front of Suwon. I don't think the manga tries to say that Yona=Yonhi at all, but rather that Yona acts as some sort of reminder of her to Suwon? After all, there's close to no one left in the world who knew her, and even less in the castle and around Suwon in contrast to how Suwon grew up and is surrounded by Yuhon's faction and people admiring him. But most people forgot about Yonhi or never thought much of her. So I assume post-diary Yona tries to balance things out a little bit on that aspect, showing that even if people see Suwon as Yuhon's successor, he is also at his core his mother's son and it's sad to pretend he is not.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In parallel, even if not as explicitely as Yona (as I don't remember Keishuk ever mentioning Yuhon in front of Suwon?) Keishuk is one of the many reminder of Yuhon to Suwon. Keishuk definitely isn't Yuhon either, but the way he thinks and his ideology are similar enough. So you could say that Yona and Keishuk are Yonhi and Yuhon's voices in the present.)
In parallel Keishuk represents the exact opposite of listening to your feelings. Keishuk needs analysis posts for him alone, but even though he is obviously not without emotions at all, his place and role by Suwon's side is precisely to present him things as objectively as possible and make the most practical and efficient decisions, leaning towards machiavellianism (and I love him for that <3). Plus, contrary to Suwon, Keishuk doesn't have any emotional attachment for Yona and Hak, so while Suwon can rarely think straight when it's about them, Keishuk can, and is essential. Suwon would have never made it like he's engaged to Yona, he would have never proposed an alliance with her in the first place, nor would he have asked her to support him on the battlefield on his own. Before the alliance, Keishuk also investigated on the DDHHB behind Suwon's back, and tried to kill Yona and Hak several times because he knew they would be/have become a nuisance, while Suwon overlooked what Yona could/does represent because of his feelings.
Keishuk takes the decisions Suwon can't. And I think a part of Suwon is aware of that. Keishuk is like a point of reference and the reason he has Keishuk by his side and lets him do all these things is because he agrees that these actions are sounded and benefit Kouka in some way. Suwon would have never imprisoned Hak himself, but when Keishuk tells him about it, Suwon doesn't object. When in chapter 2 Keishuk tells Suwon to kill Yona, he doesn't object either, and readies himself to do so.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Keishuk is Suwon's speaker. Suwon rarely voices his true thoughts but Keishuk as a proxy often gives us an idea. His personality makes him more snarky and they don't agree on everything, but Suwon knows that Keishuk will always absolutely prioritizes Kouka as a whole over everything else and he can trust that. And that's also why I think Keishuk can represent one part of Suwon's psyche. He is the part of Suwon that shows no remorse for his colder decisions and is resolved to make any sacrifices needed for the sake of his goals. He is the part of Suwon that refuses to let himself be moved by his emotions and unable to make sound decisions because of it, the part of himself that won't prioritize someone only out of love or compassion.
And Yona is you could say the speaker of Suwon's feelings. Take the Hak imprisonment fiasco for example. This is a moment that shows a bit of Keishuk's vulnerability, but if you decide to read every interaction between Keishuk and Yona as some kind of metaphor of Suwon's inner conflict it's also super interesting. Keishuk wants to kill Hak because he is a threat to Suwon's life: simple and straigthforward. Keishuk doesn't love Hak and is still afraid of the danger he represents for Suwon's life at that point and very much doesn't like how Hak tries to get closer to Suwon without his approval. These are points very specific to Keishuk as an individual, related to his backstory and his personality. But this very reactive answer to Hak suddenly getting too close to Suwon is also very befitting of how Suwon feels imo. Suwon doesn't know Hak was here at that point sure, but on a meta level rejecting Hak so extremely the second he gets too close and sees him at a weak point just makes sense. Hak was the very last person Suwon wanted to be seen by this way. And him not objecting to his imprisonment is for me a sign that he is okay with things this way. He doesn't want Hak to get close. It's better like this. If Hak gets close, he can't think straight in more way than one. So let's discard him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But then Yona enters and stops Keishuk. This scene is meant to show Yona's development and how she is able to protect Hak her own way and how Hak's life is not something she will ever compromise on, things that are distinct to her as an individual as well. But if you see Yona's rise in the castle as the rise of Suwon's closeted feelings, getting harder and harder to repress, it also shows that it got to the point where these feelings directly clash with his usual mindset, that these feelings for Hak have enough power to put a curb on the "discard every piece in your way" ideology.
Suwon is a secretive person who learned to keep most of his thoughts and feelings to himself. He is by nature someone who doesn't react to tragedies the way you would expect him to, looking detached and unconcerned. But what Akayona showed again and again is that by no mean this is equal to him being indifferent and not feeling anything at all. This is just his way of processing and dealing with grief(I'm not gonna go on a tangent on how he can be read as neurodivergent but yeah. he's so real for that). Being openly emotional like Keishuk and Yona is just not who he is as a person, it happens but only rarely, so the two of them are the perfect proxy to show the turmoil going on in Suwon's heart. Whether it's when Suwon is annoyed and angry, or when he's worried about Hak's whereabouts, they're his voice. (Interestingly Keishuk seems to be the only one convinced Hak is dead and thinks as such. Something something Suwon swaying between hoping that Hak is still alive somewhere(like Yona) and giving up on that hope(like Keishuk).)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But Suwon is not Keishuk. And actually a lot of times when Keishuk advises Suwon to kill someone, Suwon compromises to only capturing and imprisoning them or even lets them escape in Yona and Hak's cases. And one of the way I choose to interpret the Kai battle arc like is that it's all about Suwon accepting his own feelings, that even if he agrees with his father's ideology, he is his own person and he can't keep discarding the part of him that cares and loves and worries and feels. He can't keep discarding Yona and Hak. Yes Yona is needed, his own feelings are needed.
And he is not Yona either. That's why he still sees saving Mei-nyan as a nuisance. Suwon is Suwon, and being able to look at things calmly and evalutating the risks and costs of an action over another and making his decisions based on that is still very much a part of him that you can't remove.
He is somewhere between Yona and Keishuk. A King who inherently prioritizes the bigger number over a few individuals, and yet someone who genuinely likes the people around him and can be swayed by his own emotions. He is very much both his parents' child. And he has to learn to reconcile both, without discarding one or the other.
Going even further, Yona being a proxy of Suwon's feelings fits perfectly the role she has now. She always tries to help the people that Suwon discards for his goals and he used to not let her do so, as a symbol for closing himself off completely, but now he accepts it (with still some reluctance but hey!) and knows he can entrust her with it. I don't think this is inherently a bad thing and it works well with Keishuk as a parallel again, as Suwon always entrusted him with all the logistics and the things he doesn't like to think about. Keishuk also often carries the bad role and direct the negativity at him (on purpose or not) so it doesn't reach Suwon. So like, to each their own role.
TDLR: Yona and Keishuk are like the little angel and devil on Suwon's shoulders respectively telling him to save and kill.
#lumen ponders#(too much)#btw to anyone thinking keishuk wants power or manipulates suwon#please reread the manga. at last from vol27 idk what else to tell you#akayona#akatsuki no yona#yona#keishuk#kyesook#suwon#soowon#my special power is that i can make everything about suwon#i wanted the castle arc to be 100 chapters longer for more yona suwon keishuk shenaningans btw#they could have been so funny. it's so funny in my head#i could say sm more about the yona/keishuk parallels#one is liked by everyone the other has 0 in charisma#(he's a 10 to me but wtv)#both saw someone they care for be killed in front of their eyes and had to find a new meaning in their life afterwards#and both only wants the best for kouka. just in different ways bc of how different Yuhon and Il were#'even if you'd spared her life she'd only suffer' ok keishuk. ok. ok. ok#forget about the suwon/yona parallels this is the real shit!!!#i looove when two characters represents the conflicts in another character's heart#there's def a lot to be said about how keishuk is the one who asked Yona's help as well#he particularly finds Yona's useful for her unifying power. something he doesn't have at all#keishuk is so endearing to me in how he accepts he doesn't have the power to protect suwon#so he always has to rely on others.#his own way of protecting without physical strength ;;#the akayona is my head is so goated#didn't want to rant about my beef with the execution of all that. but rest assured im still a hater#akayona thoughts

I'm trying to keep myself so hard since it is literally fiction and not real but there is insanely toxic people in Akayona fandom, it is hard to ignore them after some point. I don't even care about getting bashed by the whole fandom at this point, i love Yona and i'm not a big fan of neither Hak or Soo-won nor the romance in series so block me if you are uncomfortable with that. This fandom has stupid double standards when it comes to only Yona and Yona ONLY, no matter what she does she is always the worst character just because she is a female protagonist and some people trying to hide behind "meaningful"(!) excuses for hating her is even funnier.
The dragons got their powers from dragon gods which means they are semi-gods, yet we don't see them beating up the villain for at least once. Kija swings his hand for a second, Jaeha breaks the ground with his foot for ONCE and they are already done. Shin-ah is already useless once he uses his eyes and look; Zeno, who is supposed to be the strongest character, a goddamn immortal yet we have never seen him ACTUALLY fighting ever. Yet, look at Hak who is a DEADLY wounded HUMAN in latest war but he doesn't die no matter what happens, instead he kills the whole ass army? On his own?? Honestly i won't be suprised at this point if it gets revealed that if Hak is immortal and stronger than Zeno. And then Yona kicking a man just for once after days of training and that becomes "unrealistic", of course, i mean it is Yona and not Hak.
I don't remember if it is ever mentioned in manga that Soo-won studied things such as politics or wars. Nor he was even worked as governor for training like how usually happened in history. And yet, in Fire Tribe Arc where he had literally 0 experience he already won a war. Don't get me wrong, i believe some people has intelligent mind about some certain topics that they are suited to do naturally but it is weird how it was obvious that Yona wasn't even going to lead the army, she was going there just for the needed support due to Soo-won's condition and people already started to shitting about her before the war even started, nobody gave her a chance and waited her to "experience" whereas no one had a problem when the same happened to Soo-won.
I don't have time to reread manga and i don't like talking about these kind of things either since i'm more of the type of person to use fiction as a way of inspiring and expressing myself. Akatsuki No Yona isn't perfectly written however i still loved it, because how it focuses on the suffering of those people who are waiting desperately for someone to hear their voices and how influentially it conveys their emotions despite being a fictional series with fantasy elements. Yona is a special character for me because she inspired and made me a much better person when i was still a fresh teenager who couldn't find any value in living and had no idea about how to find courage in myself and live for other people. So that is why i genuinely can't understand it, how people can constantly keep hating on Yona when she literally just breathes. She appears in a panel and the fandom is already like "STUPID YONQAA BOHOGOASHH YOU DON'T SHOW YOUR LOVE TO HAK AND YOU BREATJED THE SAME AIR AS SOO WON 😡😡 YOU B*TCH" I have even seen somebody stubbornly keep repeating that Hak is underrated and gets the most hate in fandom. Lol, no. The most hated character is Soo-won, followed by Yona.
I've written this to get rid of the stress inside of me after seeing a toxic *i usually hate using this word but honestly they deserve at this point* Hak stan on Kusanagi's Twitter again. I didn't care at allback then when i saw them in a platform for the first time and thought they just like a character probably because of special reasons just like how i love Yona but no, they are calling themselves a Hakyona fan yet never stops shitting on Yona because she doesn't show love to Hak enough. They even said Yona is fine about being engaged to Soo-won...? Look, i don't even care about the romance in manga, but this really sounds like a joke and i'm questioning if we are reading the same manga. You can like romance or simp for your favorite male characters HOWEVER obviously, if they aren't the main priority in this manga, stop hating on a fictional female character whenever she breathes, it is not normal. I don't even understand how you can ship the very special love of your life with a character you hate to death. I actually even think it is because they see Yona as self insert at this point lol. Yona has her own character so if you want to see her smooching with Hak 24/7, go write your own reader fanfics and make fanarts of yourself and Hak. Calling her Mary Sue or "perfect" then hating her for not being "perfect" and having normal human traits doesn't make any sense at all. She is not only just an 16 year old girl trying to stand on her own feets after losing both of her parents, but also someone that is trying to be light of hope for her people despite already having enough issues for herself. I'm not even talking about how the family she found after losing everything she had, passed off her condition by saying things like "Yona is strong, she can do it" when she was suffering with her trauma all alone in castle.
Hak is an adult man, not a child. Yes, they are a couple but they can't flirt 24/7 for the sake of your stupid fantasies that craves nothing other than cringe romance, especially when the manga is built on a fantasy world that focuses on serious topics from real life.

yo...i was thinking about this the other day. we've gotten a bunch of special chapters and moments for soohak scattered all throughout the manga but what if there was a special arc just. dedicated to them??? like, a final confrontation/final fight arc, naruto vs sasuke style. i honestly think that would be the most dramatic, heartbreaking thing ever. hak and soowon would either reconcile or kill each other in hatred, but it would be painful either way. do you think kusa might/can do it?
Hello! Thank you for sending me an ask!
I would love to have one or two chapters, or even a mini arc, centered around soohak. It would make sense for this to happen in Hiryuu Castle Arc, as it is an “unveiling arc”: we already had the “unveiling” of the four dragons during the mock tournament and the “unveiling” of Yonhi’s diary. Yona has learned a lot about the Crimson Illness, her parents and Soo won’s parents during this arc and Hak should learn about it too. From a narrative point of view, it would be boring if he is kept in the dark about these things for 30 more chapters. Joo doh even makes fun of his ignorance: “You were Il’s favorite, so there are a lot of things he didn’t tell you”
I would love to see Hak being the one to start a conversation with Soo won. Maybe Hak stumbling upon a feverish and trembling Soo won and saying “Is it true? You’re going to die of a incurable disease?”. It would highlight Hak’s character growth: he’s no longer overwhelmed by rage when he sees Soo won, he can have a calm conversation with him and more importantly, he wants to know more about him. Meanwhile, Soo won can’t hide behind a polite smile anymore and pretend everything is fine, he actually has to explain things to Hak.
One thing I’m sure of is that they’re not going to “kill each other in hatred”, that wouldn’t fit Akayona tone or themes. Kusanagi loves Hak a lot, so he’s not going to die. The jury is still out for Soo won though....One of the worst-case scenarios would be Soo won dying so that Yona can get the throne easily. I really hope Kusanagi doesn’t choose that option. But for now, we can only wait and see.

Fandom(s): fma mainly (and creatively), but i LOVE yakuza and dabble in akayona, fairy tail, and the x files
Where you post: ao3, ffnet, and tumblr
Most popular oneshot: i have all of mine in a collection so ignoring that one and going off hits on ao3 alone its pick me up at seven, sir. i see y’all wanting those frat laws abolished for royai 👀
Most popular multichapter fic: the way it was which honestly BLOWS my mind to this day
Favourite story you’ve written so far: ... it’s a tie between let you love me and hit and run. they were both SO fun. lylm was just so warm and refreshing to work on whereas hit and run will always have a special place in my heart and i think that’s the one i’m most proud of (that’s completed) to this day.
Fic you were nervous to post: indirect. it was the first jeanroy piece i worked on and i was so new to the ship too that i just wanted to do it right hhh
another answer was my first ever fic. it was a high school au that is long gone now but was Not Good. so really, the second one, a medieval royai au i wrote way back in 2013/2014
How do you choose your titles: song titles. i’m ride or die with song titles. or if i’m feeling spicy i take a quote from the fic

yona and furuba?
thank u!! akayona favorite character - yona second favorite - hak, but special shout out to yoon for being number three, and i think he deserves more love least favorite character - this is a stacked list but yuhon sucks the most i think.  the character i’m most like - yona? probably favorite pairing - hakyona least favorite pairing - it feels... weird to ship kija and jaeha when they call each other brothers favorite moment - FAR too many to choose. but special mentions go to: yona giving hak the pendant, hak’s confession (and the hhb peanut gallery), the entire scene where they name themselves the happy hungry bunch, lili’s gay awakening and yona reading soowon to filth in front of his men rating out of 10 - 10/10 i desire more animanga like it
furuba favorite character - tohru... i love you second favorite - MOMIJI MY SON least favorite - akito can eat my sock. shigure too. character i’m most like - momiji, for sure favorite pairing - kyoru, no competition least favorite pairing - really don’t trust people who ship tohru with hatori. he is a handsome anime sadboy but he’s in his late 20′s and i will be his manic pixie dream girl instead, thank you. i am 26 and he can call me favorite moment - again, too many to choose. hatsuharu showing a stranger his dick? hatori’s complex over his zodiac form? tohru and kyo sharing one braincell and being terified of jason the bear? almost cinderella? momiji Living to cause problems on purpose (especially for kyo)? hanajima insisting that she’s going to fuck kyo’s dad just because it makes kyo squirm?  rating out of 10 - i hate to keep giving things 10/10 but like, furuba, man. i have rose colored glasses. it was my middle school manga. and the reboot is SO GOOD

Hi there! I have a question. What do u think abt Keishuk and his relationship with Suwon? Why do some ppl dislike him sm even though he just did his duty and kept loyal to Yuhon who saved and raised him? There are many chars who have the same thought and vibe as him in other stories, but they're respected.
Hi Anon! Thank you for the ask.
Keishuk and Suwon's relationship is one of my favorite in akayona and I could talk about them for hours. What is engaging to me about them is how strange and unique their whole relationship is. Like you know, in other stories I feel like they could easily be more emotionally open with each other and in general closer, but Suwon and Keishuk are just...not. They were both raised by and admired Yuhon and I feel like in another world, in other circumstances they could have been more like brothers, but they're stuck to being doomed coworkers instead. Like I really wish for some development in their relationship eventually (with Suwon and Judo too...) but at the same time, the reason they keep working together is because they trust each other to not be swayed by their feelings and only do what is the best for Kouka, even if it means using themselves as pawns, so. Yeah.
They do feel some kind of way about each other though, a secret thing... and that's what is so endearing to me. One of Suwon's main trait is that he likes everyone, but when it comes to Keishuk (see: the fanbook) he's like "eerrmm...I don't really..." and it's sad but it's so special and unique coming from Suwon it's actually very lovely to me. Keishuk annoys Suwon at times, and he's always on his back and Suwon is not particularly interested in him because Keishuk only and strickly live for his job and is the way he is, yet they sticked together for 10 years and planned the coup together and are still working together. Just like you can say that Hak knows Suwon like no one else, I think it's true of Keishuk as well. Keishuk knows and understands a Suwon not even Hak can grasp and accept. And it's that bond that I love.
Keishuk's feelings for Suwon are also interesting to think about because he is definitely fond of him in some way, but Keishuk's priority is Kouka's prosperity so whenever something happens to Suwon, there is an ambiguity in whether Keishuk reacts strongly because it's Suwon, or because it puts Kouka at a disavantadge(and Suwon obviously assumes it's just the latter). I think the ambiguity is fine as it is and it doesn't need a clear cut answer, as I'm not even sure it is clear cut for Keishuk anyway. But I wonder where things will lead them in the future... Keishuk is said to be emotionless and cold with everyone "but he often scolds Suwon" and to be "strongly attached to Suwon" (both elements are from the fanbook too) so it is undeniable that he's important to him, whether he acts on it or not. They won't comfort each other, sure, but they're partners in crime and I love that for them.
Tumblr media
I think it's true for Suwon and all the generals and not just him and Keishuk but they definitely mirrors the ddhhb found family. Likeee they could be more, but they're not, because with Suwon, Keishuk and the generals it's all about keeping a distance and staying professional. It shows that there is some bond formed in that too, despite the pressure, expectations, betrayals and divides and idk actually it's not deep I just love them your honor they're everything to me and I would read a spin off dedicated to them!!!
Tumblr media
Well all that was only for the first part of your ask (how do you expect me to stay brief about them...I can't, I just can't...) so now for the second part.
As you can see I don't share the vision of the people who dislike him lol. Even though, yeah, it's true that fandoms of other stories can sympathize more with characters like them and it's interesting to try to understand why, in the end it won't change the way it is and I prefer to just engage with them the way I love than to lose any more hair on it. I'd say though, I think I can understand at least for Keishuk, because, well, he's not made to be sympathetic you know? He is, to me, and to you too Anon, and there are elements in the story that give him depth and make him sympathetic in some ways, but most of the time Keishuk is here to annoy people with topics people don't like and that's his role and he carries it willingly. Keishuk carries the bad role for everyone, even for Suwon (that's why it's not this rare to see fans of Suwon who hates Keishuk. It's strange to me but whatever.), he's the man in the shadows taking all the controversial decisions etc etc...That's what I love about him too. But I guess when you're strongly attached to Yona or Hak, the way he tried to kill them and hurt the dragons, now uses them and in general was often rude and cold to them is unlikable. I love when the ddhhb is defied like that personally so I can't relate, but yeah. The story sometimes framing him as stupid and in the wrong for some of his behaviors with them (especially in the castle arc) can explain it too. Like I think the story itself very much encouraged siding more with Yona than him so it's not that surprising that readers follow it. And since Yuhon was also made to show how wrong and monstruous his actions were, it doesn't help Keishuk's case. We're the crazy ones Anon ahah, but I don't think we're wrong either.
Tumblr media
If you ask me I think the fandom has in general a big problem with any character that defies Yona (or the ddhhb in general), hurts or just doesn't particularly like her. Like yeah people seem especially harsh, and defensive of the ddhhb. Maybe because the story is so focused on Yona (I don't say this as a judgement) ? Who knows. But that's why it's interesting to watch people's reactions to Zeno right now ahah. I enjoy it quite a lot (even if part of me is kinda bitter that so many people are understanding without extending that to Suwon who, you know. is so similar but whatever!!!!).
Tumblr media
(how to not love them...my fist is shaking)
#ask#soowon#suwon#keishuk#kyesook#akayona#akatsukinoyona#yotd#me: i will be brief#i have like. 10 thousands more things to say about them tbh#their professionalism makes them so sick too like that's not the healthiest#bc suwon deserves comfort and indulgence and not just cold expectations#but in the end keishuk is maybe just not the person for that#and suwon doesn't expect that from him anyway#BUT LIKE. IF SOMEDAY THEY WANT TO. YK...GO BEYOND. I WOULDNT OBJECT#<- desperate#<-crying#throwing up etc etc#chapter 249 was smth to me. it was a lot. i can't believe it was real#the way keishuk was unphased and collected after losing a leg but lost his cool for suwon ooooh let's just all kill ourselves!!!#and the parallels with yuhon's death. man#but then in ch251 he's again like “how is his majesty? hm so we can't advance anymore” like directly back to business i can't with him..;#i just really wonder if the shadows thing will lead to smth with them (and judo). wait and see#it has the potential to trigger smth new with them it so has but im so scared to expect anything.#also smth very emotional to me is that keishuk had to accept and work with the part of suwon he initially didn't know/discarded#that was represented by hak and yona#that's why i think keishuk feels unfit to be anything than what he is to suwon rn and would rather hand the role to someone else#like he handed the role of protecting and supporting suwon(in the ways he can't) to the ddhhb#he's just watching over him :')#I scream and cry about Keishuk squeezing Suwon's hand bc he went in the backstreet behind his back again 5 times per day.

I keep wondering... Would you happen to know about Chang Ge Xing (長歌行), by Xia Da? ʕ´• ᴥ •`ʔ
It's a manhua of historical fiction telling the adventures of Chang Ge, the heroine, during the Tang Dynasty. The story starts right after the Xuanwu Gate Incident. Chang Ge is an imperial princess, highly intelligent but also quite arrogant. Her parents are assassinated by her uncle. She escapes and wanders all across China, disguised as a young man. She is captured by the Turks and she becomes their strategist. She meets Ashina Sun, the adoptive son of the Khan. They're like day and night but they soon share a strange friendship.
The series is currently on hiatus, but your aesthetics posts keep remembering me of it. I recently read it once again from the beginnings. It's a seinen, so it's quite angsty, but there's still sweet moments. The two main characters are star-crossed lovers (slowwww burn), and there's also plenty of lovable second characters. ʕ ᵔ ᴥ ᵔ ʔ
And, the art is so beautiful... ʕ✧ᴥ✧ʔ
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I don't read many manga, but this one always had a special place in my heart.
Anyway, I just thought I'd share it with you because God of the Red Mountain inspires me the same way and your characters also bring me so much joy ... ʕ〃´ᴥ`〃ʔ I didn't know if I should send this to you as an ask or a submission (but here we are).
...... Annnd I'll stop now. It's already too long. Sorry sorry. Now I'm silently going to die of embarrassment in a corner.
---
I'll just add my comment here
I haven't read this series, no! It looks beautiful though, and the story sounds really interesting! I'm adding to my must-read list (´ω`★)
While you're recommending reads, have you heard of Akatsuki no Yona? It's a fairly popular shoujo manga, and while not based on real history, is also a period fantasy!
A lot of the same plots in AkaYona seem to overlap with Chang Ge Xing, and I love, love the series with all my heart. It has some of the best characterization I've seen in a shoujo manga.
But yes yes, I'll definitely take a look at this. Thanks for recommendation~~

Title: Bottom Line Fandom(s): Akatsuki no Yona/Yona of the Dawn Characters: Tsubaru, Queen Kuva, Kushibi Pairing(s): N/A Rating: 13+ (topic of drugs talked about) Summary: During a routine sales pitch, Tsubaru is called by Queen Kuva to talk about the fate of nadai.
Words: 1,169
AkaYona Ladies Week 2019 - Tea and Sweets
Becoming a royal purveyor of medicine had always been Tsubaru’s goal. There was money to be made, a royal bloodline to take care of and please, and she would take any opportunity to further her own company’s prosperity. It was usually a fairly routine visit. Greet the king and his mother, Queen Kuva, present the newest and most interesting products, and sell whatever they were interested in for the royal court.
Lately, they had asked for nothing new. It was the same this visit. Medicine for small wounds, respiratory illnesses, bed enhancers, and pain killers. Only the queen used nadai, specifically, and she appeared nervous as the servants took possession of the latest dose, unbeknownst to them what it actually was. Though the drug was legal, there was still a huge stigma against it. A powerful narcotic that in normal use was used in very small doses to treat pain had always been misused in the country of Sei and beyond since its discovery.
Queen Kuva coughed and stood from the throne, shooing away the servants hastily and outstretched her arms toward Tsubaru. “Miss Tsubaru, would you have the time to join me for tea? I would like to discuss the royal needs for next year.”
This was a rare opportunity, and Tsubaru lit up. She instructed her subordinates to wait outside of the castle gates and followed the queen. As she walked down the halls, she sensed an unknown tension among the employed. Some quickly averted their eyes when she noticed them, and something told her that this wasn’t going to be a typical sales forecast meeting.
She was seated in one of the castle’s flower gardens. The queen winced as she sat slowly onto her large cushioned chair with the help of her servant. The queen had always suffered from chronic pain, and her age did her no service. She brushed the black hair overhanging her shoulder to her back and sat straight.
“His Majesty will be joining us shortly. In the meantime, what kind of tea would you like? We have just about anything you can think of, so don’t be modest.”
Tsubaru tried to get a reading on her servant, but there didn’t seem to be anything she could tell about her disposition other than that of a typical servant. She ordered regular green tea with sweeteners and further tried to figure out what the special treatment could mean. The king came rushing in out of breath, apologizing for the delay. He certainly wasn’t that dignified of a king, but that wasn’t expected of him. Everybody knew that his mother was the decision maker behind everything. The only reason he was here was to listen to his mother and carry out her order.
“Now then,” Queen Kuva began, “what are some of the newest medicines for pain?”
A twinkle lit Tsubaru’s eye as she pounced right onto the subject. Pain for ears, pain for joints, pain for a burning chest–they weren’t exactly new but they had never been ordered before. There were narcotics popping up similar to nadai, but they were much more dangerous and something that she would never offer the royal family. Her common customers, yes, but the queen? Surely not.
“I’m trying to find a replacement for my pain. Do you think any of the medicine you described could at least make it bearable?”
With that said, both Tsubaru and the king softly gasped. Tsubaru was well aware that the queen had tried everything in the past and nadai was the only thing that helped.
“What may I ask is the problem with nadai? You shouldn’t be ashamed that you rely on it, My Queen,” Tsubaru insisted.
“Nadai isn’t a legally recognized drug in Kouka,” Queen Kuva whispered. With that, the queen said nothing more and sipped her tea.
The king seemed confused at the implication, but it only took Tsubaru half a minute to realize what she meant. Nadai was one of her best selling products. The dread hit her like a carriage pulled by a hundred horses. This would ruin her. Completely ruin everything she had built.
The servant slipped in with some sweet peach buns go accompany the tea and excused herself with a defeated sigh. The king still looked confused, and the queen stared into the distance, looking indifferent to further discussion. She couldn’t look Tsubaru in the eye.
“If Kouka’s medicine merchants can thrive, you will most definitely bounce back. I’m sure of it,” she firmly stated.
As she was escorted from the meeting, Tsubaru seethed with frustration and anger within. Never could she imagine a scenario as absurd as becoming a vassal state of Kouka. Kouka had been weakened to the point of the start of inner collapse. Did anyone seriously think they were suddenly different with a new king? A king who was only a few years older than their own?
If she had to become a black market merchant she would. She wouldn’t be held back by legalities, whether it was by dose or the entire product itself. The drug had become common in Kouka’s Water Tribe, and there were four others that she could exploit before anyone else, knowing this news. She pulled a twisted smile just as she was about to open the castle doors to the outside before someone from behind firmly kept it shut.
She jerked around and was about to scream at the perpetrator to let her pass, until she saw His Highness Kushibi looming over her. He leered and smoothly apologized for startling her. The queen’s brother was the head of economics over Sei, and he did a fantastic job of it. Expanding foreign trade with neighbors across the sea to the south was one of his legacies, and it was what allowed Sei to prosper when Kouka closed trade ten years prior.
“May I have an audience with you briefly, Miss Tsubaru?” he asked with a smile that betrayed his cunning thoughts.
She was hesitant, but she was also curious to know if he knew. If he knew, did he have an alternative? Was there some sort of hope that she wouldn’t need to resort to going underground?
As they slipped into the nearest room, Kushibi cut to the chase. “I am interested in toxins and poisons. There’s a,” he paused before sneering, “pest problem in the castle that I would like to purge.”
Tsubaru stood still, breathless and speechless. There were other professionals who dealt with those sort of problems. The fact that he was coming to her meant he wanted to use on someone. Someone…
“Why yes I do,” she said as she grinned. “Would you like something that kills instantly or painlessly?”
He walked towards the closet in the room and swiped the doors to the side. Inside was chest upon jewelry-adorned chest, and inside the one Tsubaru was invited to open was enough money to support her company for a whole month. The entire closet with filled with them. One Hundred at least.
“Instantly.”

10, 25 for Akayona and/or 9,15 for OPM? Or maybe 13 for LotGH? My sodium intake is diverse and I'm genuinely curious if you can mine any from these fandoms
AKAYONA:10. Most disliked arc? Why?
You know, I don’t think I have a most disliked arc. At least, there’s not one that immediately comes to mind. I have arcs that I liked more than others, but nothing that was really boring or offensive to any of my senses, you know? Akayona has been pretty well-rounded. If I had to pick one, maybe the Xing arc? It felt a little more chaotic and disjointed than the others, but then again that’s kind of reflective of the subject matter it was dealing with too.
25. How would you end XXX/Would you change the ending of XXX?
Aha, so I’ve thought about this a lot! Tbh, at the point where the story is right now, I can see it ending a bunch of different ways and me being equally happy with any of them as long as they are well-executed. I can see Yona being crowned and marrying Hak – either making Hak her king or just keeping him as a king consort (which, personally, I think he’d be happier with) – with Soo Won stepping down and remaining as an advisor. I can see Yona relinquishing her claim on the throne and letting Soo Won continue ruling, with her and the dragons as a kind of Kouka’s special ops force, wandering around and protecting the country from the ground as they have been doing. I can see Yona and Soo Won reaching some kind of an arrangement for joint rule. I can also see Soo Won dying in some self-sacrificial “for the country” way once he feels his part is done (he’s also got that anime mom side-ponytail that I’ve been side-eyeing since the beginning lol), leaving Yona to rule.
For me, it all really hinges on the specifics surrounding King Il and his death, as well as Yu-Hon’s, and what really happened -- since neither the readers nor the protagonists have this info -- in order to determine how the other characters would react.
Personally? After clearing up the air surrounding their fathers, I would keep Soo Won as king (and Keishuk as his advisor, and everyone else in their posts as is) keeping him as the political leader, and have Yona lead by example as a folk hero of sorts. Other than Yona and Hak being on the run, Yona and Soo Won’s actions have been in tandem throughout the whole series -- their goals and approaches are very compatible, and it would benefit Kouka even more for them to operate at different levels of society as they have been doing all along.
Realistically though, this is a shoujo manga, so basically I just would like to see Soo Won (and Keishuk) continue to stick around i.e. not dead lol. I fully expect Yona and Hak to end up together with Yona most likely in power, again given the genre, unless Kusanagi has something groundbreaking in store for us. I’m also keeping my expectations down because complex, promising, nuanced shoujo series have ended up with a very bland, boiled down ending before, in which everyone’s character development was forgotten in favor of promoting the end game pair (looking at you, KamiHaji >.>)
OPM:9. Most disliked character(s)? Why?
I don’t think I have one! Other than Garou and Genos, literally everyone else is on the same level of disinterest for me :D Idk, I’m just not nearly as invested in individual characters in this series (other than those two) as I usually am and I have no clue why.
15. Unpopular opinion about the manga/show?
[Disclaimer: I’m way behind on both the manga (I keep forgetting to read when chapters are released, so at this point I’m just letting them pile up and planning to binge-read in the future XD) and the anime (I haven’t been able to keep up with new releases since the winter T_T), so I can’t speak to anything that’s happened after I stopped]
I think this is more of a specific Alex-opinion rather than an unpopular opinion lmao, but
SUWABE IS LITERALLY RIGHT THERE WHY DIDN’T THEY GRAB HIM TO VOICE GAROU????? I mean, I know he’s probably overloaded with work like always and I do like Midorikawa’s voice and his work in other series, but Garou’s appearance and personality just scream Suwabe and that’s whose voice I’ve been hearing in my head while reading the manga all this time. (Also, it might be just me, but at times it sounds like Midorikawa is doing his best Grimmjow impression in how he’s delivering the lines XD)
LOTGH:
13. Unpopular opinion about XXX character?
I haven’t been in the fandom really too much so I don’t know what’s popular or not, but Oberstein is wonderful and valid and right, and I will fight anyone who knocks him ♡
