a/n: kinda inspired by aj rafael’s we could happen. also, let’s just pretend that matt is sheriff and helps out at the grill on his off days or something.

kai parker x reader (gender-neutral)

a little angst and fluff

word count: 2,251

The Mystic Grill was packed.

Temperatures were at an all-time high and townies sought out refuge indoors under the cooler air. Not to mention there was an almost infinite supply of drinks and activities, thanks to Caroline’s quick planning, to keep visitors happy and comfortable. So, who could complain?

Kai did.

Kai agreed to meet his friend, no best friend, besides Bonnie but he filed their friendship under “complicated” a long time ago, for lunch. Sure, it wasn’t perfect but it was a genuine friendship, one that he cherished deeply. Out of all of the time he had spent in the world that was one of the things he lacked and always dreamt of. Not that he’d admit that to many people. You were an exception, though.

Of course, your friendship didn’t start smoothly. It was expected that you would face some backlash just by speaking to Kai but you weren’t that worried about what the others thought. While they were all so quick to deem Kai as one thing and could never change, you tried to understand him.

While you didn’t condone his actions, you took his upbringing into account and how that made him the way he was. Would he change overnight? No, but you were patient with him.

It only took you a few minutes to show up and Kai smiled at the slight sheen on your face. The heat was almost unbearable for you but the air conditioning inside the Mystic Grill made your, seemingly lengthy, trek worth it. You quickly scanned the building and noticed Kai at a table near the bar. After greeting Kai and putting your things down, you elbowed your way through the crowd to get some drinks and appetizers.

When you finally got to the bar, Matt had your favorite drink waiting for. You thanked him and ordered Kai a drink and Matt gave you a weird look but you pretended to not notice.

“Look, no offense,” Matt started, “but I will never understand how you’re friends with him.”

You looked over your shoulder to see Kai playing with the salt and pepper shakers. Even if he did look occupied, you knew that he was listening to the conversation. Before Kai could even chance a look your way, you quickly turned back to Matt.

“Sometimes we don’t pick our friends. You just are,” you grabbed a fry from the basket Matt placed on the counter, “I mean, I used to think the same about you and Tyler. I didn’t get how you could be friends with an asshole like that but he changed. Right?”

Matt gave you a doubtful look as he worked on Kai’s drink, “Hmm, I don’t think Kai is capable of changing.”

You pursed your lips. You didn’t have the heart to start an argument with Matt but you understood that he had his own opinions and you had yours. As you stood there waiting for the rest of your order, the conversation shifted to other things like your summer plans and availability.

Then, the two of you reminisced about your time in high school and how Matt never really got to spend a lot of time with you. Before the two of you could continue the conversation, a glass of beer exploded on the countertop near Matt. A glance towards the crowd told you that no one else seemed to notice what happened. A slight hiss brought your eyes back on Matt.

“Shit,” he mumbled as he quickly pressed a rag on the gash near his right eye.

You didn’t need super hearing to know that someone was laughing.

Luckily, Matt’s cut wasn’t that deep but he still rushed out back to find a first aid kit.

So, with an angry glint in your eyes and your orders, you made your way back to the table Kai was sat at. A seemingly innocent smile was on his face as you sat down and for a few minutes, you didn’t say anything.

Kai took your silence as an ‘okay’ to tuck into his food. It was only when he had ketchup swiped across his face that a crack broke the surface of your façade. It was impossible for you to not laugh at how he ate like a little kid.

With a slight grin, Kai voiced, “And there you are. I was a little worried about you there for a sec.”

With a shake of your head, you downed your drink and snatched Kai’s before he could even comprehend. Your gaze was fixated on the wooden table before you looked up at Kai.

He jutted his chin towards the bar, “Looks like you’re not the only one that’s thirsty.”

If there was something in your mouth at the time, you were sure you would have spat it out. So, instead, your eyes widened as you look in the direction he was talking about and noticed Matt staring at you. He gave a quick nod before he got back to work.

“Um, you can’t just go around making glasses explode on people,” you took another sip of what was left and quickly cut Kai off before he could say anything, “especially when the person did nothing.”

Kai tilted his head at your remark, “I wouldn’t say Miles—”

“—Matt.”

“Right,” he grabbed a napkin and wiped at the corners of his mouth, “anyways, he did do something. Not that you noticed.”

The last part was mumbled but you were able to make out what the heretic said despite the volume level of the grill. It took a minute but you slowly pieced everything together. Kai seemed off and that was only after he listened in on your conversation with Matt. You figured that he was just annoyed about what Matt said about him but there had to be something more to it.

Everything became slightly clearer when noticed Kai’s eyes moving to the bar every few minutes and how he’d look at you. He was trying to see if you saw the glances that Matt stole when you weren’t aware. But why? You were only polite to Matt and there weren’t any hidden meanings behind the words you said to him. Once you figured out what was going on with Kai, you quickly paid for the food and drinks and dragged him outside.

When the humid air hit you, you let go of Kai’s bicep and stalked to the benches across from the clock tower. The entire walk was pretty much silent aside from Kai’s whistling.

“So, uh, you wanna tell me why I didn’t get to finish my burger?”

You could tell from his voice that he was also annoyed but how he felt towards Matt didn’t give him the right to hurt him and you voiced that. Kai avoided your gaze as you slumped down onto one of the benches.

“Well, maybe if you hadn’t hurt Matt this would have turned out differently.”

With a roll of his eyes, Kai sat beside you.

“Donovan is gonna be fine, Y/N.”

With a shake of your head, you snapped, “Yeah maybe but what if he was hurt badly, Kai? Okay, I get that things aren’t the best between the two of you but he’s one of my oldest friends and after all that’s happened, losing him…”

Tears had prickled your eyes at the thought of losing another friend. Kai noticed and gently pulled you into a hug. He knew that the two of you were only friends but was afraid that he’d lose his chance to tell you how he felt. Afraid that someone like Matt, a good guy, would whisk you away from him.

You felt Kai’s chest rise and fall. The scent of pine trees on his shirt calmed you down enough to pull away from him. His eyes were on you as you wiped at your face and you could see an intensity in them when you finally met his eyes.

“Y/N, I never thought that someone with a heart like yours would ever want to be associated with me,” he sat up and rested his chin on his hands, “you’ve fought for me, even when I didn’t deserve it and I just can’t seem to get it together.”

Kai was so busy thinking of what he’d say next that he barely noticed that you took one of his hands in yours. Though small, the gesture always meant a lot to him, especially at that moment.

So, without a second thought, he blurted, “I have feelings for you.”

The next few seconds felt like hell as Kai waited for your response. Truly, you had no words that could exactly articulate how you felt, so you showed him.

You kissed him.

Though it was one of the best feelings you’d felt, you pulled away and mumbled a ‘goodbye’ as you hurried home. Everything in that moment was a bit much for you, so you had to leave to organize your thoughts.

So, illuminated by the streetlights overhead, Kai was left all alone.

Again.

It had been two days since you had last seen Kai. Two days of you trying to get your thoughts in order. At some point, you sent him a text expressing how you were sorry to have left him like that. Luckily, he understood and would give you as much time as you needed which was more than you could have asked for given how you reacted.

Most of your days were spent lounging haphazardly on your couch, something playing on the T.V. to serve as background noise. Other moments were spent thinking about Kai and how he was dealing with everything. Was he also consumed with nerves like you? How did he feel about you needing time? To be honest, you weren't sure why you needed time. You felt the same about Kai so what was there for you to think about?

The realization of you needing time could make him think you didn’t feel the same had you throwing on sneakers and rushing to his place. After everything that he had been through, you needed him to know that he was loved.

It only took you a few minutes to get to his apartment. The moments after you knocked on his door made you feel like your head was underwater. Sounds were muted and it felt like you were holding your breath. So, when two hands gripped your shoulders you shrunk back only to realize that it was Kai. His blue eyes were darkened with worry as he looked you over from head to toe.

He noticed that your heart was beating quickly and how you were nearly gasping for air.

“Hey, Y/N, hey,” he wrapped his arms around you and rubbed your back gently, “you’re okay. Just breathe.”

After a few deep breaths, he welcomed you into his apartment. The interior was clean except for a few takeout boxes scrambled atop the coffee table. You were surprised to see that his curtains were open, letting in rays of light but before you could continue to assess, Kai clearing his throat brought you back.

Slowly, you turned to face him and noticed that he stood a few feet away. He looked okay aside from his messy hair. You were relieved that he seemed fine but you knew that was only on the surface. There was no telling how he felt on the inside and what his mind was tricking him into thinking.

“So, do you feel the same way?” His voice was barely above a whisper.

You didn’t trust your voice so you could only nod.

“Oh, uh,” his eyes widened slightly as he rubbed at the stubble on his face, “wow. I wasn’t’ expecting that. I mean, you’re my best friend and now we’re in love with each other. I’d understand if this is too much for you.”

The space between the two of you slowly shrunk as you placed a hand on his cheek. Your eyes slowly inched up his face before they settled on his eyes.

“No. Don’t think that way,” one of your hands gently smoothed down pieces of his hair, “you deserve to be happy. You deserve to love and be loved, Kai.”

His eyes never left yours and not that he’d admit it, he was moved by what you said. If anyone else would have told him that he would have shook them off but he believed you. To him, you were everything that he wished he could be. You were all of the good things that he never believed he could ever come close to being. To Kai, being loved by you made everything worth it.

Once his lips slotted against yours, it was like time stood still but passed so quickly at the same time. Every second, every minute that passed was put to use as you and Kai committed every feeling, every chill that ran down your spine to memory. When you both pulled away to get in a breath, no words had to be said.

Both of you knew that things would not be perfect but it felt right. Even though there were forces that tried to stop you from falling together you both would fight with everything in you to make things work. Of course, not everyone wouldn’t approve but that was the last thing on either of your minds. The only thing that mattered was that Kai had you and he knew that he’d never be alone again.

Gender: *siiiiiigh* Goddammit, I’m tired. Potted version: Two of us in here, one woman, one agender using he/him pronouns, and the whole combined entity uses they/them and goes “enh, I guess” to the idea of “demi-woman” as a gender.

Star sign: Sagittarius. Or Ophiuchus, if we’re doing the sidereal thing, which I have a certain affection for because of who it pisses off.

Height: 5'4″/163 cm

Time: 10:41 PM US Eastern Daylight Time as I type this.

Birthdays: ...do people other than my mom have more than one? Anyway, it was a few months ago.

Favorite band(s): Are we doing this again? Anyway, I’ve recently looked back in on Triakel, Garmarna, and Hedningarna, who’ve been quite active while I was gone.

Favorite solo artist(s): Similarly with Kepa Junkera, who seems to average releasing/guesting on three albums a year. The last I’d checked in on him was in 2008 when Etxea dropped, and it took me about four days to listen to everything he’s put out since then. That’s a lot of accordion. (My dad rather liked him, even if he did have a habit of ‘humorously’ mispronouncing his name as “Creepy Junkie”, and I couldn’t help but think he would’ve liked some of the new material—one of the few occasions where I’ve felt anything other than relief that he’s gone.)

Song stuck in my head: Bok-Espok by Kepa Junkera, which he seems to reprise every other album. Which means I’ve heard it many, many times this week.

Last movie I watched: None recently, no.

Last show I watched Last game I played: I don’t watch TV, so let me hijack this question like I usually do. I’m currently partway through the When Twilight Strikes demo, and while I’m thiiiiiis close to offering my services as a local consultant for the NYC stuff and found the “exotic beauty” kind of tone to Blane’s initial description somewhat uncomfortable, it’s otherwise been great fun, and I’m looking forward to future updates.

When did I create this blog: 2013. April, if I’m not mistaken.

When I post: Post post? Not often, it’s just about wall-to-wall reblogs around here.

Last thing googled: "shaped like a friend”, because I was curious about how long ago that phrase was coined. The Internet was unhelpful on the matter.

Other blogs: Nope! I’ve been Team Let It All Hang Out since day 1.

Do I get asks: Sometimes, usually when I’ve posted an ask meme.

Why I chose my URL: Paul Celan, “Die hellen/Steine” (The bright/Stones) Celan’s good, you ought to read him. Depressing, mind.

Followers: 324, which IIRC is more than double what I had a year ago. Dragon Age fandom is probably responsible for quite a lot of the increase. I can only imagine what the people who followed me for my DA diaries think of me now!

Average hours of sleep: 6-7. A bit more when I’m not waking up early for work, but not by much.

Lucky number: 7, I’m boring.

Instruments: Not anymore. Somewhere among the infinite possibilities of the multiverse is a timeline where I’m not cursed with cloth ears, tiny fingers, and bullshit lung capacity and was able to get reasonably good at something. Maybe an instrument, maybe singing. I liked singing.

What I’m wearing: My black pajama pants again, this time with a galaxy-print T-shirt in ace flag colors. (I needed some purple shirts to go with the purple skirts in my summer wardrobe, and I was like, “I know what’s purple!”)

Dream trip: No. I’m done.

Favorite food: All of them, leave me alone. OK, not all of them, I’m actually kind of picky and a lot of fruits and vegetables that I used to like now make me violently sick, but you get the idea. I do make a point of ordering mofongo on special occasions (and Election Day), though. Good stuff.

Nationality: American. Mom thinks I might be eligible for a Greek passport, but I’m not so sure, especially since she was naturalized here years before I was born.

Favorite song: You know I’m not going to give this an actual answer, but here, have a song: Stina by Triakel, which I haven’t found an English translation of but is definitely catchy as hell.

Last book I read: Currently about halfway through Arkady Martine’s A Desolation Called Peace. What an incredible book, she’s somehow gotten even better at writing since the first one. In particular, I’m going to be shoving it in the face of anyone writing about a child being raised for rulership, like a crown prince in a monarchy—the characterization of Imperial Associate Eight Antidote (bright, socially and politically aware, and eleven goddamn years old someone please hug this child what are you doing to him) is one of the highlights of the whole thing so far.

Top 3 fictional universes i’d like to live in: Oof. Teixcalaan might not be so terrible, if I were Teixcalaanli of reasonably comfortable socioeconomic status. (Oh, stop, no way in hell was I the only one idly wondering what I might use as a Teixcalaanli name by halfway through the first book—how’s Fourteen Reflection sound?) I’m starting to feel like the Star Wars universe would be a lateral move, and if I can petition to specifically be plopped into an Alexander Freed novel, at least my self-destructive tendencies will be beautifully rendered in graceful prose. And in the universe of AJ Hackwith’s The Library of the Unwritten, I’d be curious to see what my hypothetical creations would look like (though creators aren’t supposed to see them, at least not while alive).

Favorite color: Burgundy? Purple? Silver? White? Black? I’ve got a few. Basically, if it’s not green or orange, I’m probably OK with it.

My favourite Ships... (Part 1/ 100000..)

Hi, i'm bored and everyone's still sleeping.. I have nothing else to do and i'm too lazy to change out of my pajamas. So, i'm going to tell you the story of how i started 'shipping' people... Or as sometimes i call it 'infinite pain', because not all liked couples get together or if they get together not all stay together..

Well, i started shipping after i discovered YouTube. Seeing all those fan made YouTube music videos, also all of those YouTube couples, i also discovered ships, before actually seeing the movies, that these people who are shipped together play in. Shame that some of these 'ships' didn't happen, but it was still fun watching the fan made videos. But to this day when i see two people that i like together, but probably aren't even compatible for each other j go "oh.my.GOD!!They found THE ONE!!" I have a lot of these 'ships', i discovered YouTube when i was five, i'll probably do another million of these.. So here are some of my favourite ships:

1.Melix

Felix and Marzia, one of the many YouTube power couples. I love them. Felix, a.k.a. PewDiePie is the most subscribed YouTuber in the world (go subscribe so he can stay that way, don't let T-Series win!) he's awesome and Marzia, former YouTuber (i love her and miss her on YouTube ♡ 🙁♡) now she does pottery, jewelry, clothing lines, she's a multitasking BEAST. I love her. And i love them! They've been together for so long and are finally getting married! (What took you so long, Felix? *shaking my head*). Could you imagine the happiness i felt when i found out he proposed to her on my birthday, that was the best gift ever! I love them both, i watch PewDiePie's videos every day, i like them a lot, i used to watch all of Marzia's too ❤ i love them both, i think they're getting married this summer, which is awesome, i wish them all the happiness in the world. ❤

2.Every Harry Potter Ship, that's not the ACTUAL pairings in the book..

First of all, great series, i love it, BUT... Something got mixed up with the Pairing there and i don't know why, but it's like everything, except the actual pairings is okay, perfect even. I love all of the ships, Drarry(awesome fan art), Dramione (again awesome fanart AND fan made videos), Harmione (better than RonMione, that would have been a fucking power couple i tell you.), i even find Drapple amusing. I just like all ships. Ron and Lavender, Luna and Ginny, Daphne and Neville, Neville and Ginny, all awesome ❤ And i heard there was this 'Ship war' going on before, but i think everyone has their own opinion and every single pairing has it's own thing, you know?

3.AJPunk

Ahh, these two! They had this storyline when they were in the WWE, it lead to AJ Proposing, it was like a love triangle thingy, she kissed Kane, she kissed Daniel Bryan, but then She kissed Punk!.. Then pushed him through a table.. But then she kissed him again! And he slipped her the tongue! After that their storyline took a different route they were something like rivals for a while, they would mention each other in Q&A's, turns out they were dating at time and now they're married! I love it when i choose to ship the right people.. 😊😊
