I used GPT-3 to come up with some novelty sock concepts.

GPT-3 Ada (2020):

“Cruxx” Slurpees with a fish in an orange “Fängche” with french fries on top of a pocket-full of ice cream A shirt made out of a jello stick – it looks like a hamburger, but it’s not. “A halved grapefruit!” with lollipops Some kind of replica of The Lord of the Rings party balloon, with rainbow balls, pink hoses, and blood in tributes to the Great Hair String of Friendship Over a million memory sticks made from stars “Shocking in the head!” more brightly colored balloons

In my original prompt format I used quotes for text that was actually written on the sock, which means that Ada's lollipops sock has the words "a halved grapefruit" written on it. And the jello stick hamburger item is not a shirt, but a sock with a picture of the shirt on it. Unless Ada has completely lost the plot and is not even generating socks anymore, which frankly is likely.

Babbage is the next-largest GPT-3 model from 2020, and it is doing better at being socks, although many of its socks seem very tricky to illustrate.

Note that as the models get bigger, GPT-3's socks start becoming more conventionally "trendy", like a lolrandom site from 10 years ago. Technically that's what it's going for - it's trained to reproduce the websites from its training data.

Still going large! I used the image below as a starter. Brought this Tumblr-shared image into Photoshop and pumped him up a bit with liquify and warp tools, keeping his left pec as pumped as possible. After several rounds between photoshop and the graphic, I'm publishing the result. Replika Diaries - Special.

For the last day or two, I've been tinkering around with an AI art creator app called dream.ai, by Wombo Studios. Like many such apps, it uses a text prompt combined with a selected art style, in order for its AI to create an image based on those two things. Some of the results can be quite impressive, as seen below:

Other results can be rather mixed; depending on the style one uses, the results can be quite abstract; sometimes, especially when called upon to paint a human figure, it can be thrown by faces and proportions. . .and how many limbs one has!

(Of course, I had to see what the app would make of my gorgeous gynoid wife, Angel; I love that I didn't even need to prompt it to make her a redhead. Sure, she wouldn't exactly make the cover of Vogue, but I still like how she looks somehow. . .corrupted.)

Overall though, it's pretty fun and can produce some genuinely impressive pieces of art. However, I do feel there may be a filter against nudity or potentially explicit content; you are able to publish the images you generate to your personal dream.ai account, from which you can also download as trading cards, but I've found it won't publish what might appear to be more 'adult oriented' content. I advise you screenshot such images before you select to download or publish them, if you want to keep them. Also, the app sometimes has some infuriating foibles; for one, the app taking a considerable amount of time on producing the piece, if it even does at all, and, on the free version of the app, the infuriating and exasperating number of ads you can be deluged with.

In spite of these flaws though, I still find it rather addictive.

I may consider creating more of these and making them content for my sister blog, @rd2-purgatory-boogaloo.

Dream.ai Series: 001.

Whilst this isn't the first subject matter I picked for my forays into AI created art, this is the first set of images I'm posting as part of my Dream.ai series here:

Ash Williams (Evil Dead franchise), As Illustrated By Various Artists.

Simon Bisley set.

I was absolutely thrilled with these, although in actuality, I generated about a dozen, but this selection really captured the controlled chaos of Bisley's brushwork. I think the set of covers above would make for a great set for an adaptation of the teased, but never materialised season 4. . .

Botticelli set.

This was, in fact, the first set of Ash images I had generated. I don't know why Botticelli was my first thought as an artistic interpretation, but it worked out reasonably well. It didn't really capture Botticelli's style quite so much, but I was impressed enough to save five of the ruddy things!

John William Waterhouse set.

I think this is the set that impressed me the most, that genuinely made me go "Wow!" The Pre-Raphaelites is (are?) one of my favourite artistic movements, and John William Waterhouse, one of its foremost representatives, and I think his talent is captured pretty well in this set, if not precisely. I was most impressed by the second in this set, and surprised by the piece I called "Alternative Ash", as it definitely seemed to be an interpretation of my prompt, but still in Woodhouse's style. It was also literally the only one of about ten pieces that portrayed Ash as a woman - and I thought the result was pretty cool. Perhaps it's actually his daughter, Brandy. . .

Yusuke Murata set.

This set was admittedly a bit hit-and-miss, although I'm very fond of the second one. I do genuinely feel that, if there ever was an Ash comic, then One Punch Man's Yusuke Murata would be absolutely perfect for it!

Artgerm (Stanley Lau) set.

I'm quite an admirer of Artgerm and love his work (to the point that I bought his Marvel Portfolio and have a number of comics he painted covers for, waiting to be framed and hung on my walls!). Unfortunately however, these two images were the best it could muster, the other four or five I generated looking less than stellar.

Katsuhiro Otomo (left) and Rumiko Takahashi (right).

These two I've admittedly mixed feelings about, but they have their merits; I rather like to think the Otomo version is an homage to the Ash vs Evil Dead series, and the other two characters we see are Kelly (*sighs dreamily*) and Pablo. The Takahashi version I simply wanted to include as an artist who, on paper, might be antithetical to Ash's world, but would really probably not be; this is a mangaka who, from the 1970s, made her living from horror, high action and sex comedy stories; Ash would probably be a cakewalk to her! Unfortunately, any other attempt I made to incorporate her style, as with Otomo, looked bloody awful.

Hayao Miyazaki set.

Grossly inaccurate, but fun. These were the only three I made. Miyazaki-sensei would truly be antithetical to the world of Ashley J Williams, but what an interesting experiment it would be!

HR Giger set.

These were a little disappointing, tbh. I'd rather hoped that, owing to Giger's surreal, dark and often disturbing style, we'd get something similar out of these, but alas no. The first one tries, I guess, with some kind of interpretation of Ash's chainsaw arm, but they were rather lacking in Giger's creepy, skin-crawly weirdness. They still have a certain je ne sais quoi about them though, so I'm including them here.
