When you learn that "stern" also means the rear end of a ship...

"A king who would pass into history as Radovid V the Stern" suddenly takes on a very different meaning...

I'm betting it's all Philippa and Dijkstra's fault, too!

They went from referring to him as "Prince Seed-Waste", to "Radovid the Stern" when he became King.

Then, hundreds of years later, historians found some copies of their personal correspondences, mistakenly believed that it was what Radovid's people actually called him (rather than a very inappropriate nickname that the two spymasters had come up with for him), and therefore deduced that he must have been a very strict and authoritarian ruler!

Nah, he was just a very, very gay king that decided that if his dad had been allowed to marry a noblewoman and his brother a princess that couldn't give him any children, he was going to do both by marrying himself a viscount, gods dammit!

Poor Radovid... Forever misunderstood...

"Max?"

"Hm." Her eyes wander El's dark bedroom ceiling.

"Can I know your secret name?"

Max turns her head on her pillow and lets a little hiss of a laugh out through her teeth.

El finds her arm and follows it down to her hand, hooking their fingers together loosely. "I would not tell it, I promise..."

Honestly, her middle name isn't that atrocious. She'd just hesitated to share it with the party when the topic came up, and the boys' deaths of curiosity got to be too much fun, especially Lucas, and now it's become a whole thing, and it'd be sort of anticlimactic to reveal it to them now.

El's the only one who hasn't tried to beg and bribe and threaten it out of her. She's just being soft and earnest, as if this is truly a huge deal, and that's why Max will tell her.

And also because the idea of acting miserable about any name to somebody who didn't really even have a name for most of her life, just seems shitty.

"What is so bad about it?"

"It isn't really, I guess. It just sounds like a name for like, a hundred year old lady."

"Then maybe when you turn a hundred you will like it a lot."

Max snorts. "I'll keep you posted."

El rolls onto her side, playing sleepily with Max's fingers.

"Max...? Are friends just for kids? Or can old people have them?"

"Yeah, you can have friends no matter how old you are."

"Oh, good." She holds Max's arm and leans her head against it.

Max looks down at her in the dark and kind of feels the urge to cry pass behind her eyes. El has that effect, sometimes. She gives her fingers a little squeeze.

"So we can still do sleepovers when we are a hundred?"

To anyone else, Max would give a more cynical response, but El brings out something gentler in her. "Sure," she smiles. "We can be roomies at the old folks home, and have them every night."

"What? Is roomies?"

"Roommates. Like, sharing the same room."

El gasps quietly. "That will be so fun."

Max laughs.

It's quiet for a minute.

"If you don't want it, can I have it?"

"Have what?"

"I am the only one with no middle name. I wish I had one. You wish you didn't have yours. So..."

"If you want one, you could pick any one you want," Max points out. "Is there some name you like?"

"Yours."

"You don't know if you like mine. You don't even know what it is."

"It doesn't matter what it is. My name is made of my favorite people.. they give me pieces. I would like having you in it. Even if it is a piece you don't like, I would like it. For being yours."

There's that feeling behind her eyes again, but Max doesn't know how to respond except with a little laugh.

"I mean.. yeah, sure, if you want it you can have it."

El hugs Max's arm happily. "I'm going to tell everybody my new name tomorrow."

"Oh, no you aren't."

"Why not?"

"'Cause you already promised you wouldn't."

"I promised not to tell yours. If you give it to me, it is mine instead."

"No, but it's still mine. Like, Hopper gave you Hopper, but he still has it? It'd be like that."

"Oh. Okay.... then... you and me have a secret middle name only we know. I like that too."

Max smiles. "Yeah."

"So what is it?"

An evil cackle bubbles up out of Max.

"What."

"I have way too much power right now. I could say it was like, Prunella or some shit and you'd-"

"IS IT PRUNELLA?"

"No, but what if it was," Max wheezes, "and you had to act all stoked about wanting your name to be El Prunella-"

"What if it-"

There's a thumping on the wall and a muffled "GO TO SLEEP!" and they curl up with laughter, smothering themselves with hands and pillows.

"What is it, really?" El whispers, still trying to get ahold of herself.

Max rolls her eyes and sighs, "Madeline. My mom was really into the M's... I dunno."

"Mmmadeline," El says, like seeing how it fits in her mouth. "It's pretty."

"You really don't have to say that. I told you, it's an old lady name."

"I don't know any old ladies. I only know you. And I like that it is an M, because that reminds me of you already. El Madeline Hopper..." she giggles. "Thanks, Max."

Max can't find any real enthusiasm for the way that sounds, but she supposes that's beside the point. She likes why El likes it. And it's okay, sometimes, to just be genuine for a second, especially with El, especially in the dark.

She smiles. "You're welcome."

A little later, Max is startled out of half-sleep by a sharp gasp and "OH!"

"Oh, geez. What?"

"Mad Max!"

"Pff," she laughs. "Yeah. Sounds a lot cooler that way, I thought."

She's kind of surprised nobody's guessed it because of that. It's right there in front of them, really.

"I like it both ways."

"Thanks."

"Max," El whispers again, when she's half asleep yet again.

"Hm."

"I would have been Prunellas with you."

Max laughs sleepily into her pillow. "That's probably the nicest thing anyone will ever say to me."

Avatar's Hottest Woman Tournament

Round 3 summary

So.. this round was... very wild. A lot of close ones.

Rangi proves herself to be the hottest of all Avatar gfs, as she barely slides past Katara, bearing but 50.3% of the votes

While Korra proves to be the hottest Avatar, also just barely, with 51%

Kya II has truly been the dark horse of this tournament. Her polls have the least notoriety but she has been doing the best out if all the candidates. She defeats beloved goth gf June with 46.1%

Now, the matter of Lin Beifong vs Suki. This round has been extremely tense. Sadly, we have much reason to believe this poll has been botted. After much deliberation, I regret to inform you a that both contestants journeys have come to an end, in order to avoid another botting. This competition is for fun and I am afraid I have no means of preventing any bad actors from skewing the results. I apologise to all voters for the upset this may have caused

Due to Suki and Lin being eliminated, Korra passes to the finale uncontested, while we shall see if Kya II can avenge her mother.

🔥barry: idk enough abt the general consensus on flash media to know what’s unpopular, but i will say, i don’t see enough ppl talking abt him being a fucking asshole. he drags up dead people’s names to make a point, like he fights dirty

examples + analysis under cut (spoilers for flashpoint paradox + blackest night, but mostly bc it gets real long)

this is an alt timeline where bruce died in the alley instead of his parents, resulting in his father becoming this world’s batman. barry is trying to convince batman to come with him to restore the timeline, so he brings up his DEAD SON as a persuasion point?? tbf the world IS ending, plus bruce is very much alive to barry, and he IS trying to get him back, but still a dick move

(pls forgive the ass quality, i was scrambling to take a pic bc the store was closing in 10 min 😭)

hal: death is overrated anyway.

barry: don’t tell me that, tell [the ppl whose loved ones have passed].

hal: i didn’t mean it like that—

barry: tell your dead father.

me: HELLO?!? BARRY??!?!

hal Was being an asshole too so ig barry was just trying to fight fire with fire. he seems to only go this far when ppl's lives are at risk, so i can follow his thought process at least.

the page continues to have hal taunt him for caring too much, and the crazy thing is that barry actually concedes. i was overselling it when i said barry fights dirty bc this is sm more than a petty argument to him. he's not trying to one-up or spite hal, it’s a last resort. so when hal turns it back on him, barry doesn't get defensive back. he knows how much he's hurt his loved ones by being the flash, he regrets not being there for hal, and barry admits to being scared of losing it all again—turning hal's call-out into a moment of emotional vulnerability. and only THEN does hal finally realize what barry's been saying.

so there are 2 interesting things happening on barry's end here. barry’s the type of person to follow the golden rule pretty literally. i've mentioned before in a past meta that barry believes in the goodness of humanity bc he can be—HAS to be a firsthand example, not just to others, but to himself. if he can be a good person, then surely others must be as well. props to the character consistency across all these different media bc this idea even (and especially) applies here:

1) the golden rule, treat ppl the way you want to be treated, giving hal a taste of his own medicine so that he understands. it’s important to note that, again, barry does this out of desperation, not pettiness. and he might be dishing it out, but he can take it too. he chooses kindness when he could've easily dug his heel in after hal tried to call him out, but barry is trying to reach out to hal, not fight against him, and diffuses the situation that he ramped up. before this, my immediate impression was that barry spoke callously out of heightened emotions or misreading others, but the way he’s been leading this conversation and responding specifically to hal’s own emotions shows how calculated barry actually is.

2) like i said, barry goes by the mindset of “if i can do it, then so can you.�� he draws a direct comparison to both of their deaths (they died and came back btw) and says he can’t believe that even after everything hal has gone thru, he’s still acting like this. personally, i read this as genuine shock and disbelief, not necessarily a dig at hal. but regardless of intention, hal takes it as an accusation, so he flips it back on barry. however, barry realizes that hal is deflecting. this is where he draws that comparison. barry had to learn his mistakes the hard way. he only realized all of this when it was too late, when he already died. he acknowledges that he’s repeating his mistake of fearing for the worst, but the thing is that he’s learned from his past, grown and changed with it. and so he projects this growth onto hal as if their deaths were at all similar (keep in mind, this is the issue where hal tells barry “i died a sinner, YOU died a saint”). again, going back to that idea of “if i can do it, then so can you.”

i think the only reason it works here is that barry knows hal. he can read him, and more importantly, has total faith in him, more than hal is willing to accept. barry’s hope in ppl is just unconditional, for better or worse; he wants to walk hal thru this together, he switches his language from “you” statements (“i can’t believe you haven’t changed) to “us” statements (“i missed a lot of good times we could’ve shared while i was away. and a lot of bad times we could’ve helped each other through.” … “let’s both slow down and figure out a plan”). to quote my friend emm here, they know and trust each other enough that barry can push that boundary and still end up at a reasonable middle ground.

barry is so full of good intention but he doesn’t exactly play nice if he thinks he knows what’s good for you. “if i can do it, then so can you” is a double-edged sword. he wants to believe in the absolute best in others. it doesn’t matter how many mistakes they’ve made or what their past may be, barry has hope if nothing else. but in the same way, it can be a presumptuous thing, setting the bar too high, putting too much pressure onto others. barry is all about the potential of things, working towards a brighter future, but what about the present? what about NOW? barry used to be troubled by his past, but then he gained closure and learned acceptance, so all he does now is look to the future. his powers put him out of touch with time and reality, but he’s never really been able to live in the present; his superspeed only enables this. past, future, but never the present, no wonder he’s so stubborn.

god, see what i mean! do you see what discussions could arise from dissecting the intricacies of barry’s hero complex! he’s not just a superhero paragon, he’s not just some vanilla good guy (tho he is also all of these), there is an entire thought process and timeline of experiences and flaws to study under a microscope here. and buddy, i am getting my barthology degree.

I want to start off by saying that I have spoken to and apologized to Maharaja, and am again apologizing to Maharaja, and also apologizing to anyone who has been hurt by my action and my inaction over the last week, which came from my moving across state lines and not by any willful wish to cause harm. I am deeply sorry for the pain and hurt that I have caused. There’s no excuse for that.

The truth is that I was ignorant of my comments surrounding Daenerys’s mad queen arc. I said the arc itself was sexist, therefore implying that anyone who decided to write or re-write that arc was sexist. I was ignorant of the subject and was given advice and education on how to correct it. As a woman who struggles with mental illness, I never wanted to stigmatize or cause harm in how I went about describing the exclusion of the mad queen arc in my portrayal. My voicing of this was in no way meant to undermine or attack Maharaja’s portrayal of Daenerys, but I know now that it was extremely poorly worded and harmful in how it was phrased. I see how it was not only hurtful to them, but to others who chose to include this plot point in their writing. The wording was not only harmful to women who struggle with mental illness but to the women of color who participated in that arc of the show. I acknowledge how deeply problematic my initial behavior and inaction was and am incredibly grateful for those who came forward to educate me.

Going forward, the harmful phrasing that I used on my blog has been permanently removed and will not appear again, and I will continue to educate myself on this topic and all topics similar and coinciding in the future. Maharaja and I have come to an agreement and are going forward on good terms, and I thank them again for having the patience to educate me on why my phrasing was harmful.

In conjunction with this, I also want to state that I was not involved with the DNI that was recently added to another writer’s blog. I did not want to be a part of it in any way. I, however, did like a dash post that was made about it. I did so without reviewing the docs, assuming that someone who had been very genuinely harmful to the community had been added vs. someone they had a personal vendetta against. I was not aware of the scope of this issue until very recently. When I was made aware, I reached out and explained this to Maharaja. I want to thank them for listening to me and for again, educating me. I do not and will never support anyone who classifies the education of others against harmful topics as being a bully. I have since unfollowed the individual who posted the DNI.

I want to reiterate that I was not being bullied by anyone, but that I was being educated on something I did that was harmful, and I listened to that criticism. I have removed the harmful things from my blog and will continue to educate myself as I grow as a person.
