I know you're a big fan of Hynden Walch but do you have any other thoughts about AT's voice cast?

Yes!

Tom Kenny is hands down the most experienced and best voice actor on the team. He manages to bring so much life to Ice King, and he can express so many emotions while putting on this crazy voice. Where he shines most is when you see him switch from Ice King to Simon. Same voice actor, same character, but you can tell immediately that he’s an entirely different personality. He’s so good at switching between warm nerd dad and Classic Ice King. He’s good at singing in Ice King’s voice. He’s so skilled that it’s probably beyond my own knowledge pool to describe what he’s good at.

Tom Kenny voices numerous other characters, like Magic Man, Gunther, Orgalorg, Crunchie and Chicle from the top of my head. Wait, what’s with Tom and voicing AT villains with secret identities??? All 4 of these were by coincidence, LMAO.

Jeremy Shada started off as this kid who did the BEST screaming ever, seriously go rewatch season 1, he is so funny. When his voice broke it became less funny and cute, so they made Finn start to grow up, and after a stage they took advantage of his developing singing skills. Jeremy captured Finn’s personality so well across the show, probably because Finn’s dialogue was written to match his changing voice. I’d say that by the end of the show, Jeremy’s proven dynamic range is much smaller than that of the other crew members, so for example he wasn’t chosen to voice any side characters because he’d just sound like Finn. He also couldn’t do a “younger Finn” voice, I don’t think that’s physically possible, so if they do make Younger Finn in Together Again, they’ll probably have to cast a Young Jeremy soundalike or it’ll sound out of place.

John DiMaggio is wonderful as Jake the Dog, he can sing, he can express Jake’s various emotions and frustrations perfectly. I never feel like Jake’s acting out of character, because John’s voice always sells Jake’s feelings to me. This makes Jake unique in that whenever he’s onscreen, he never breaks my immersion with a weird delivery. This is spectacular because John admits he never fully understood Adventure Time, so the fact he was able to put so much effort in without knowing what was happening demonstrates his experience. John also voices some of the Banana Guards. I’m not sure if he voices a couple of them, or ALL of them??? Whoever voices all the banana guards is a champ. It’s most likely Dee Bradley Baker.

Olivia Olsen is the crew member who has exposed herself the most to the public. Olivia’s voice acting in season 1 is rough, but so was everyone else’s, and she was just a teenager at the time. She settled into Marceline from season 2 onwards, and I loved the genuine approach she gave the character. Marceline’s voice is so relaxed and real-sounding. Olivia’s natural-sounding voice has less dynamic range than the other characters, but it’s hard to tell if that’s because of Olivia herself, or just how Marceline is written. Her SINGING voice is spectacular. It’s where Marceline’s more subtle emotions shine the most. However, like Jeremy, Olivia was excluded from voicing side characters because her voice is far too recognisable as Marceline’s.

Dee Bradley Baker does so many side character voices it’s unreal.

Shout-outs to the following voice actors:

Felicia Day as Betty. She captured Betty’s magical insanity and coldness so well.

Jessica DiCicco as Flame Princess. Her character didn’t get the best performances in the show, but Jessica always worked hard to pull off a cute angry teenage fire girl.

Tom Scharpling as Jermaine. He sounds just like Greg, but that’s OK.

Pendleton Ward. Who knew the creator of the show could act so convincingly as the world’s most sociopathic and funny valley girl?

Livvy Stubenrauch as Young Bubblegum in season 10. Of all the young voice actors, she did the best performance, fusing the inflections of Isabella Acres and Hynden Walch into a very convincing Young PB. No easy feat.

Audrey Bennett did a fantastic young Marceline in Obsidian though. Her singing voice was so cute.

I don’t know how, but Hayden Ezzy managed to convince me that he was an alternate version of Finn. He really does sound like a cursed Jeremy.

Justin Roiland’s voice is annoying for many, but he convinced me Lemonhope was a different character to Lemongrab, so that counts for something.
