Last chunk I wrote was in Star (very much not the last line but I just wanted context with it)

The morning is soft, birds singing gently in the cold light. There’s a gentle breeze, ruffling the needles of the trees and whispering through the bushes. It’s cold, nearly freezing, the temperature too stubborn to change. I look over to see Tristan awake, sitting up and sketching in his notebook, using the wool blanket like a shawl. He’s focused intently on his pencil, dark blue eyes half closed and mostly obscured by his thick lashes and falling curls. I wish i could hear his thoughts when he’s like this, not active and tense. He doesn’t look peaceful, exactly, but he’s not scared.

He glances up and makes eye contact with me, and visibly startles, almost dropping his pencil. “I didn’t think you were awake.” His voice sounds an octave lower this early in the morning.

I stretch. “Yep. You ready to move?”

His notebook snaps shut with his pencil stuck in the middle. “Yeah. You slept in a lot.” He’s looking at the tree beside me.

I check the sky- the sun is still pretty low, and it’s too cold for it to have been out for long. “You expect me to wake up at four in the morning?”

His cheeks redden. “I mean, i was awake for a bit before you. Nevermind.”

I don’t know why he’s acting like this. Maybe he’s mad at me for giving him the blanket without asking him?

Well, if he doesn’t bring it up, i’m happy to avoid that argument altogether.

I really like this part because it's Tristan having a minor crisis from ori's perspective, which we don't get a lot. Tristan is just decently gay and not sure how to feel about Orion, and he also acquired a blanket in his sleep and very much doesn't want to acknowledge that it happened or that he was using the blanket willingly after waking up (Tristan being a normal human being capable of accepting things from otbers?? He would never).

Also apparently according to my friend it's not obvious that they're queer about each other and idk how to make it obvious? Like I'm aroace please help I'm trying to make it subtle but I've made it too subtle

How did Tristan and Orion come to meet? Was it instant chemistry when they did?

thanks again for the ask I'm always genuinely so excited about this stuff

So the story they're from (star) is post apocalyptic, they meet when Tristan (running from unspecified People who he is very scared of) runs directly into the bear trap that Ori set up the day earlier and Ori being Ori he goes to find him when he hears the scream and does his best to fix his leg (he isn't a doctor, so Tristan does have a bit of a limp for the rest of his life after it heals, but it's usable). When Tristan comes to (he got a concussion which is. Not great for him I guess) he's still all panicky and threatens ori a lot, tries to leave and generally just is not vibing and is VERY put off by ori's friendliness and positivity in a world where anyone could be diseased, trying to murder you, or worse. Ori thinks that Tristan is a very disappointing person to be stuck with, but prefers him to being alone even though he's pretty shy, v depressed and a lot more abrasive then ori would like. Very much not instant chemistry. Well I guess maybe instant chemistry in terms of a chemical explosion but. Yeah. They're not exactly enemies to lovers but they are very much people who dislike each other a lot and have to stay together because one of them is responsibly for the other's life threatening injury and needs to take care of it to lovers. They get better don't worry

Tristan: honestly, no one. He absolutely doesn't trust his family, he's afraid of Orion and even at the end of the story he's fully aware that Orion is not the best advice giver, and he doesn't even really trust himself fully.

Ori: kind of everyone unless they've proven to not be trustworthy. He assumes the best of everyone and will trust any advice they give him, even a random stranger

-shepherd/shapeshifter romance-

Andrew/Shepherd: his mother. Their relationship isn't shown much, but although he does love and trust his father, they have a more equal relationship and he considers his father a little too optimistic at times. His mother has a very strong relationship with him and when she gives him advice, he will take it no matter what. His father taught him his trade, but he is his mother's son. I wish I could delve deeper into his family tbh they're interesting

Rome: his highlands and woods. They communicate to him with intentions and urges, and he trusts them completely, without question.

For star

Tristan: 1) he. Definitely does. Specifically with nature, he feels like it has thoughts and opinions and is worried that the forest hates him. 2) secret third option time!! Hes too afraid to seek vengeance most of the time, and even if he wasn't he's decently peaceful in general, but he absolutely won't forgive you if you've wronged him. It's not a grudge exactly, but he will remember.

Orion: also yes but not in the same way as Tristan, he was definitely the kid who cried when he lost a stuffed toy because it was gonna be sad and lonely. 2) forgiveness, because it's easier qnd faster even if he can't truly let go of it. He'd rather not hurt anyone else. He will make exceptions, though

For the second thing (a rural shepherd falls in love with a shapeshifter despite culturally engrained fear which may or may not have basis in reality)

Andrew/Shepherd: 1) he wouldn't admit it, but he's always had a very emotional attachment to literally everything. He often made his own toys as a child, so they meant a lot to him and he's still very protective of his childhood toys (they're locked in a chest at his house), and he does feel a lot for plants and other inanimate objects. 2) vengeance all the way. He holds grudges like a bitch and his main solution for them is fucking people up. It doesn't come up often as he tends to be rather gentle, but when someone hurts him or a loved one, their days are numbered

Rome) 1) yes. He anthropomorphizes violently and intensely, especially with his forests and plants. He'd argue that they actually are sentient and regular humans just ignore them. He's basically illiterate and lives in the woods so he doesn't really understand books but if he did, he'd anthropomorphise them too. 2) also vengeance, but differently than Andrew. He will go after people who have hurt the woods because a) eye for an eye and b) they might hurt it again. It's less of an emotional thing for him, just his responsibility to keep the woods safe. He's easier to sway into forgiveness than Andrew though

I did one of these for Tristan a bit ago (I'm pretty sure it has his pine tree tag on it so it should be decently easy to find for anyone interested) so I'll try to figure out Orion for this (I'd do the cult but I don't feel like looking at images of people having been brutally murdered and horrific religious imagery today)

I really want to do more for him cause he's got such a specific vibe that just cannot be captured by three images but here we are, enjoy your mentally ill tboy

Going to talk about star for a minute

So I really just appreciate how like. Upon starting the book ur like 'wow Tristan is very Not Doing Good Mentally and ori seems a little too optimistic but. That's fine compared to literally hallucinating I guess' and then they meet and it's like. Clearly ori is the more well adjusted and kind person, Tristan is a flighty jerk who's honestly pretty ungrateful and kind of unreasonably scared of everything? Orion must be a genuine angel for putting up with this and being so kind to Tristan. And then you get further and like they're both. Very fucked up. Also Orion is Very much not a great person, Tristan is vocally a jerk and swears a lot/is pretty abrasive so he comes off as worse but like Orion is kind of manipulative and controlling (there's plot reasons for it but like. Not cool bro)

I love my little dudes they're so messed up in the head

thanks for the tag @illarian-rambling! Technically you tagged my main account, but I'll answer it eith my writing one!

My questions are

Answering for Tristan and Orion!

Are you a sound sleeper?

T: 'oh, yeah. No. Yeah, not at all. Whenever I fall asleep, the corpses start touching me and half the time I wake up in the middle of the night. Sometimes it's fine, I guess, but I don't like sleep in general. Even without the corpses and blood and nightmares and shit, every second I spend asleep is a second where I could be running. I sleep, but when I do so, I'm aware that I'm wasting time.'

O: 'I guess so? I mean, I wake up in the middle of the night a lot, but I go back to sleep. It's just bad dreams. I'm sure it'll be easier once I find a real town, with an actual bed. God, I can't remember what mattresses feel like. The ground is okay, though!'

Have you ever owned a pet?

T: 'I mean, my family always had a guard dog, but I wasn't allowed to touch it or get close to it. Honestly, I'm not sure why they had it. We lived with the church and nothing would ever really be a threat. I guess paranoia really gets to you. The closest thing I had to a real pet were the songbirds I fed when I was a little kid. Whenever I got an allowance, I'd buy birdseed and watch them eat it. For some reason, I thought I was their only source of food. If I had to choose a hypothetical pet... I'm not sure. I think a cat would be nice.'

O: 'I... nevermind. Yeah, I'm a dog person. I'll get a dog once I find the civilization.'

What do you think is your problem?

T: 'oh, lord. You want a list? I'm fucked in the head, I pretend I'm a boy, I'm on the run from a family that wants nothing from the best for me, I see walking corpses that hang from the trees, there's blood everywhere that doesn't exist, and did i mention that im absolutely fucked in the head? Something is wrong with me. Has been since birth, but... it got worse. I can't tell whether or not any of what I experience or remember is real, I'm scared of everything, and I want to fucking kill myself. I could go on.'

O: 'I don't have- I mean, I guess I could. I don't know. Maybe I'm not as kind to Tristan as I could be? He's clearly scared, and I just wish he wasn't as... bitchy as he is. He seems to think that I'm insane, but I think he's just a little paranoid. Maybe I'm optimistic, but optimism is always good!

Mushroom, wine and meat for Ori and Tristan

warning- these are a little spoiler-y if that's something anyone cares about (specifically saying this for my irl friends who follow me here and are reading star)

Mushroom - What's the worst/most toxic relation your character has ever been in? What's the best?

Tristan- worst definitely his family situation. They were pretty intense right wing Christians and after the apocalypse, their church (already decently radical and extreme) pretty quickly turned wholly into a cult at about the same time Tristan began realizing that he wasn't a girl. Best is towards the end of the book with ori when they're genuinely in love and devoted to one another. It's still hard, but he at least has one person who would protect him no matter what, and one person who he knows his care and love for won't be taken advantage of.

Ori- worst is probably a few months after the apocalypse started. I won't go super into detail bc it's pretty plot important, but he was completely alone for the first time in his life and very very scared. Before he developed his very unhealthy coping mechanisms, he was pretty mentally fucked. Best was probably either with his family before the apocalypse or with Tristan at the end of the story, for similar reasons to tristan's. He knows Tristan would do literally anything for him and he trusts that he'll keep himself safe and keep loving Orion until they die.

Meat - What is your character's (Murder) bodycount?

Tristan- zero, although he's tried a couple times (depression ✨️✨️✨️). By the end of the story it might be one?? But I can't remember exactly

Ori- at the start of the story, zero, but he'd say one. By the end I think four or five?? Some shit goes down near the end. He also has the same issue as Tristan above although for him it was only once

Wine - How fucked up is your character on a scale of 1-Oh good God? And How do they deal with it?

my autism doesn't let me accept that scale so I'm turning it into a scale of 100 haha

Tristan- like. 98. And he knows it. He doesn't deal very well, he's stuck in the past and running from people who he doesn't even know if he wants to escape from anymore. By the end of the story, he's down to like a 67 and still heading lower. Ori makes him feel safe and like there's something in the world worth living for

Orion- 96-100 depending on where you are in the story. He denies it fervently and would say he's like a 5 or a 6. A little anxious but overall totally fine and not in denial about traumatic experiences. He never thinks about his past and is entirely set on the future, until Tristan comes in and challenges his worldview, leading to him probably being close to a 61 by the end of the story.
