If my mutals can spell my first name successfully then I’m sure my school can
They put “Jesse” on my academic award instead of “Jessie”

Alice Albinia's The Britannias is a fascinating book on many levels but also the prime reason why writing about history, especially premodern history, double-especially premodern women's history, is not so easy as just quoting some writers utterly without context/critical scaffolding/enquiry/rigorous methodology and doesn't actually prove what you want it to prove, even if the point is one to which we might otherwise be sympathetic.

the fact that riz worked so hard to keep straight A+ grades all year only in the matter of like, a week to complete two nigh impossible tasks to, essentially, ensure all that work didn't matter and ace his grades anyway would legitimately keep me up at night at his age. I hope he gets like, a fucking medal or something. or, yknow, more cash from the school. he deserves it

I thought I was getting better with my “equating academic success with worth” issue.
Fast forward to right now when I just got done with an awards ceremony and didn’t place highest in two of the classes I took and am now super anxious and breathing is getting a little tricky (no worries im genuinely fine)
Like bro, it’s not that deep and my brain doesn’t care about grades so WHY this much of a reaction to something so dumb?

Day One Hundred Sixty-One
The Principal came up to my classroom before the first bell this morning to deliver my written evaluation for the year (which is based on his observations, feedback from my students and colleagues, my own self-evaluation, etc...) There was some constructive feedback, which I appreciated, but overall it was pretty complimentary. So that was a cool way to start the day.
I spent most of it teaching my Global Studies students about Ukraine. First, we went over the article they'd read yesterday, and discussed the tensions between Ukraine and Russia during the Soviet era. Then I showed a video about the dissolution of the Soviet Union, and lectured on the political, social, and economic situation in Ukraine from its independence through the start of the Euromaidan protests. They'll continue to learn about that part of history next class, as well.
My APGOV students were feeling a bit of a post-exam malaise, but I gave them some encouragement and a couple helpful hints on the assignments they were doing (questions about the state constitution, research on their own state legislators). Reminding them that they could work together helped, too; once they realized it'd be easy work if they did it that way, they all locked in and found the information I wanted them to find.
After school there was a faculty meeting, which thankfully wrapped early enough that I could get home before logging onto Google Meet for my monthly union board meeting. After that, I had just enough time to chill and have a bit of dinner before returning to the school for academic awards night.
Now, back when I agreed to be a department head, I forgot that was one of the things I'd have to do. Each department had one major award, plus minor ones for excellence in our various subjects, and it's an awesome thing to celebrate our students' many talents... I just hate public speaking.
(No, teaching doesn't count. Don't ask me to explain it, I totally can't. it is what it is).
Anyways, I got through it, and it was a lovely night. And The Police Chief saw me at the grocery store afterwards and told me I'd done well. So yay!
