about harlow.
trigger warning: death, murder, capital punishment and suicide.
history
harlow was born july 14, 1957 to joanna and zachary fields. she is the youngest, with an older sister by three years, named river.
born and raised in los angeles, ca., harlow always had big dreams of becoming a famous actress.
she gets her shot in october of 1978 when a movie being filmed in los angeles hosts a casting call looking for their lead starlet. although harlow initially doesn’t have a ride to the location, a neighbour, chris abernathy, offers to drive her there.
she never makes it to the casting call. instead, when chris picks up harlow, he drives her out of town. a struggle ensues and harlow is strangled to death with a jumper cable. harlow’s body is stuffed in the back of his trunk and later that night, he makes the drive up where the hollywood sign once stood** with harlow’s body. he buries her there and skips town before the dirt has even settled.
**the hollywood sign, which had been in disrepair due to fires and vandalism, was torn down in august 1978, just two months before harlow was murdered. this means that the there was actually no sign erected when chris buried harlow's body. the sign wasn't replaced until november, and unbeknownst to anyone at the time, was rebuilt over harlow's grave. the sign eventually became inaccessible to outsiders when a fence was put up and, at present, is under heavy 24-hour surveillance. visitors cannot even approach the sign without risking a hefty charge for trespassing and setting off censors that would contact authorities.
almost immediately after it was apparent harlow never showed up for her casting call, harlow’s family called authorities and had a missing person report filled out for their daughter. however, no one saw her leave with chris and with few leads to go on, the investigation eventually went cold.
it wasn’t until four other victims, across a five year span, cropped up in cities throughout california and nevada that harlow’s case was re-opened. like harlow, the four other victims were anticipating big breaks in acting and seeking a ride from chris ( he’d changed his name several times over these years, finally being found and caught using the name daniel stanley ). however, while all four victims’ bodies were found, harlow’s never was.
chris is convicted of four counts of murder and given the death penalty and is eventually executed in 1993. he takes the location of harlow’s body to his grave.
in the aftermath of harlow’s death and chris’ initial sentencing, zachary fields commits suicide in 1983. joanna fields passes away in 2014 at the age of 82. at present, harlow’s sister, river, is the only surviving member of the family at the age of 68.
as a ghost
it takes harlow several years to accumulate enough energy to move simple objects, and several decades before she is able to manifest as an apparition. though, generally, she can be seen much easier to those who are sensitive to the supernatural or are supernatural creatures themselves.
while her personality is generally much the same as it was in life, she is prone to fits of boredom and as such can become a bit of a poltergeist in activity, especially if she is determined to be seen by someone.
she regularly checks up on river and her family, though river never detects her presence.
it’s possible that harlow remains among the living because of unfinished business, though what that is she hasn’t a clue. she believes if someone finds her remains, she might finally be able to rest. the problem with this, however, is that even harlow doesn’t know or remember where she was buried. she suffers from poor memory, likely from head trauma caused during the struggle with chris.

Malcolm, a dedicated planner, rather risk-adverse: exists.
Life: here’s a few curveballs and unpredictability.
Malcolm, dramatically: . . . . guess it’s adjust or die, and option two sounds pretty good right now.

She thinks of herself as a grandfather (and further a father, a husband, and such) in the context of thinking about Susan. Genderfluidity is neat like that. She uses she/her pronouns (not that she'd care with any pronouns), thinks of herself as a woman, but any relation to people etc. from previous regenerations she prefers the terms she used back then. She would struggle to see herself as Susan's grandmother - she's her grandfather. There is no contradiction there for her.

the funniest meltdown ive ever had was in college when i got so overstimulated that i could Not speak, including over text. one of my friends was trying to talk me through it but i was solely using emojis because they were easier than trying to come up with words so he started using primarily emojis as well just to make things feel balanced. this was not the Most effective strategy... until. he tried to ask me "you okay?" but the way he chose to do that was by sending "👉🏼👌🏼❓" and i was so shocked by suddenly being asked if i was dtf that i was like WHAT???? WHAT DID YOU JUST SAY TO ME?????????? and thus was verbal again
#yeehaw#1k#5k#10k#posts that got cursed. blasted. im making these tag updates after... 19 hours?#also i have been told it should say speech loss bc nonverbal specifically refers to the permanent state. did not know that!#unfortunately i fear it is so far past containment that even if i edited it now it would do very little. but noted for future reference#edit 2: nvm enough ppl have come to rb it from me directly that i changed the wording a bit. hopefully this makes sense#also. in case anyone is curious. though i doubt anyone who is commenting these things will check the original tags#1) my friend did not do this on purpose in any way. it was not intended to distract me or to hit on me. im a lesbian hes a gay man. cmon now#he felt very bad about it afterwards. i thought it was hilarious but it was very embarrassed and apologetic#2) “why didn't he use 🫵🏼?” didn't exist yet. “why didn't he use 🆗?” dunno! we'd been using a lot of hand emojis. 👌🏼 is an ok sign#like it makes sense. it was just a silly mixup. also No i did not invent 👉🏼👌🏼 as a gesture meaning sex. do you live under a rock#3) nonspeaking episodes are a recurring thing in my life and have been since i was born. this is not a quirky one-time thing#it is a pervasive issue that is very frustrating to both myself and the people i am trying to communicate with. in which trying to speak is#extremely distressing and causes very genuine anguish. this post is not me making light of it it's just a funny thing that happened once#it's no different than if i post about a funny thing that happened in conjunction w a physical disability. it's just me talking abt my life#i don't mind character tags tho. those can be entertaining. i don't know what any of you are talking about#Except the ppl who have said this is pego/ryu or wang/xian. those people i understand and respect#if you use it as a writing prompt that's fine but send it to me. i want to see it#aaaand i think that's it. everyday im tempted to turn off rbs on it. it hasn't even been a week

A customer contacted our team with questions, and then finished their email with: "I am daunted by the complexities and unknowns." I haven't been able to stop thinking about it since.

i do unironically think the best artists of our generation are posting to get 20 notes and 3 reblogs btw. that fanfic with like 45 kudos is some of the best stuff ever written. those OCs you carry around have some of the richest backstories and worldbuilding someone has ever seen. please do not think that reaching only a few people when you post means your art isn't worth celebrating.

EVERY SINGLE DAY there are MILLIONS of characters in their late 20s who get falsely accused of being father figures to teenagers when in reality the description of "weird older cousin" or "step-sibling that moved out before you were born" is 1000000x more apt

i got rickrolled today but it didn't work because i have adblocker installed, so youtube just told me i violated the terms of service. yesterday i was trying to edit a picture as a joke for my girlfriend, and google made me check a box to prove i'm human because i wasn't "searching normally".
it isn't just that capitalism is killing fun and whimsy, it is that any element of entertainment or joy is being fed upon by this mosquito body, one that will suck you dry at any vulnerability.
do you want to meet new friends in your city? download this app, visit our website, sign up for our email list. pay for this class on making a terrarium, on candlemaking, on cooking. it will be 90 dollars a session. you can go to group fitness, but only under our specific gym membership. solve the puzzle, sign up for our puzzle-of-the-month-club. what is a club if not just a paid opportunity - you are all paying for the same thing, which makes you a community.
but you're like me, i know it - you're careful, you try the library meetings and the stuff at the local school and all of that. the problem is that you kind of want really specific opportunities that used to exist. you are so grateful for libraries and the publicly-funded things: they are, however, an exception - and everything they have, they've fought tooth-and-nail to protect. you read a headline about how in many other states, libraries have virtually nothing left.
do you want to meet up with your friends afterwards? gift your friends the discord app. you can choose to go to a cafe (buy a coffee, at least), a bar (money, alcohol) or you can all stay in and catch a movie (streaming) or you can all stay in bed (rent. don't get me started) and scream (noise complaint. ticket at least).
you want to read a new book, but the book has to have 124 buzzwords from tiktok readers that are, like, weirdly horny. you can purchase this audiobook on audible! your podcast isn't on spotify, it's on its own server, pay for a different site. fuck, at least you're supporting artists you like. the art museum just raised their ticket price. once, they had a temporary exhibit that acknowledged that ~85% of their permanent art galleries were from cis white men, and that they had thousands of works by women (even famous women, like frida! georgia o'keefe!) just rotting in their basement. that exhibit lasted for 3 months and then they put everything away again.
walmart proudly supports this strip of land by the street! here are some flowers with wilting leaves. its employees have to pay out-of-pocket for their uniforms. my friend once got fined by the city because she organized a community pick-up of the riverfront, which was technically private property.
no, you cannot afford to take that dance class, neither can i. by the way - i'm a teacher. i'm absolutely not saying "educators shouldn't be paid fairly." i'm saying that when i taught classes, renting a studio went from 20 bucks an hour to 180 in the span of 6 months. no significant changes to the studio were made, except they now list the place as updated and friendly. the heat still doesn't work in the building. i have literally never seen the landlord who ignores my emails. recently they've been renting it out at night as an "unusual nightclub; a once-in-a-lifetime close-knit party." they spent some of those 180 dollars on LEDs and called it renovating. the high heels they invite in have been ruining the marley.
do you want to experience the old internet? do you want to play flash games or get back the temporary joy of club penguin? you can, you just need to pay for it. i have a weird, neurodivergent obsession with occasionally checking in to watch the downfall and NFT-ification of neopets. if i'm honest with you all - i never got into webkins, my family didn't have the money to buy me a pointless elephant. people forget that "being poor" can mean literally "if i buy you that toy, i can't afford rent."
you and i don't have time to make good food, and we don't have the budget for it. we are not gonna be able to host dinner parties, we're not made of money, kid. do you want some kind of 3rd space? a space that isn't home or work or school? you could try being online, but - what places actually exist for you? tiktok counts as social media because you see other people on it, not because they actually talk to you.
there was a local winter tradition of sledding down the hill at my school. kids would use pizza boxes and jackets and whatever worked, howling and laughing. back in september, they made a big announcement that this time, rules were changing, and everyone must pay 10 dollars to participate. when im not scared shitless, i kind of appreciate the environmental irony - it hasn't gone below 40. so much for snow & joyriding.
i saw a bulletin for a local dogwalking group and, nervous about making a good first impression, showed up early. the first guy there grimaced at me. "sorry," he said. "there's a 30-dollar buy-in fee." i thought he was joking. wait. for what? the group doesn't offer anything except friendship and people with whom to walk around the city.
he didn't know the answer. just shrugged at me. "you know," he said. "these days, everything costs money."
