February 2023 Reading Recap

February reading recap time! Check out what I read this month:

The shortest month of the year has come and gone in the flash of an eye. Somehow it also turned into a really good reading month for me though, so I cannot complain! This month, I ended up reading 7 books, which was more than I expected, so go me! We also FINALLY got a resolution to the HarperCollins Strike this month, so I have a lot of fantastic HC books I’ve read over the last three months…

rotating the pub scene from 73 yards in my mind i think there is so much being said there about wales and welsh/english tension that is so interesting and is going so under discussed

#blahs #dw #dw spoilers #the whole thing about castles in wales being english torture centres. much to unpack #i think it's easy for most viewers to watch it and see that the characters are taking the piss and write it off #but what's interesting about it is i think rtd is basing that on real exaggerations of oppression by welsh people #most castles in wales WERE built by the english and they WERE designed to oppress the welsh. except that was like 800 years ago #and some people use this as an example of welsh oppression /now/ when it's like. not relevant to modern wales really #and 'torture chambers' is a wild exaggeration that dangerously tries to compare wales to much more recent human rights violations #i think rtd is trying to caution against a romanticised or sensationalised narrative of old wales that certain welsh nationalists have #this is also what he's doing with roger ap gwilliam #i keep seeing people say his character is 'just nukes' and i'm not gonna pretend it's The most complex politics ever #but it's also not just nukes. it's about specific political tensions and attitudes in wales.#rtd's viewpoint reminds me a lot of my dad #my dad's a proud welshman he's a native speaker he grew up in a welsh speaking community #but he doesn't really care about old welsh history about llewelyn ap gruffydd or owain glyndwr or anything like that #he doesn't see it as relevant. to him what's important is modern wales and the tensions of the 20th century #i'd wager rtd probably feels the same #and what with doctor who being produced in wales being rtd's doing i think he's enthusiastic about collaborating with england #rather than being like. isolationist about it. (that's the wrong word but i can't think of a better one)#WHICH INCIDENTALLY ties the political strand of the episode with the personal strand about ruby #who is also dealing with a self-fulfilling sense of isolation #anyway i think this episode is about wales in a very significant way. we need more welsh people writing think pieces about it #honest to god i don't think any analysis of it that doesn't talk about its welshness is quite Getting It

Any lovely witchy friends out there have advice for reaching out to a deity?

#personal #been a practising witch for a long time but never really thought about having a patron #but more and more recently i feel a pull towards some specific beings. ive been making some small offerings in the form of crafts #related to their imagery and totem style representations but i havent actually attempted to contact them #or open any direct channels of communication. and as ive never had a patron deity before im not sure how to start that process #how to transition from a solo practice to a more collaborative participation #so any advice is much appreciated! feel free to dm if your suggestions might be more personal or longer than a reply #i only know a few other witches in real life and i dont think any of them deal with deities either so id love to make some friends #who also practice too i think its really good to learn this stuff from real people and not only internet stuff #bc internet stuff especially in regards to witchery can be bs at best and straight up racist and culturally appropriating at worse #and genuinely dangerous at worst for inexperienced practicers so i do prefer knowledge from other real humanoids when possible #witchcraft #witchblr

[Jiang Cheng: The Wen cultivator whom Wei Wuxian wanted to save is called Wen Ning. He and his sister Wen Qing helped us a lot in the Sunshot Campaign.

This scene is driving me INSANE because based on what transpires, we can assume:

1.) None of the Yunmeng trio has told anyone until this moment that Wen Qing and Wen Ning harbored them after the sack of Lotus Pier. (Lan Xichen’s defense of the Wen siblings is based on his understanding of their characters from their time at Cloud Recesses and their role in Wen Ruohan’s hierarchy; Lan Wangji only speaks up to refute the accusations that Wei Wuxian spoke dismissively of Jiang Cheng.)

2.) By extension, nobody but Jiang Cheng knows that Wen Ruohan straight-up imprisoned and tortured Wen Qing and Wen Ning for their actions.

3.) Jiang Cheng doesn’t provide additional information during this scene.

4.) Nobody asks Jiang Cheng for details.

5.) Nobody asks Jiang Yanli (who is in Jinlintai at this time) for details either.

6.) Nobody consults Jin Guangyao--who is in that room because he made it into Wen Ruohan’s inner circle--to confirm Wen Qing and Wen Ning’s status. (The truthfulness of his response is debatable, but they don’t know that!)

I know that “failure to communicate openly and honestly” is a recurring theme/source of tragedy in this series, but usually it’s about DEEP DARK SECRETS, not OBJECTIVE FACTS WHOSE REVELATION WOULD HURT NOBODY AND WOULD IN FACT HELP.

#LXC had a reason to keep MY's cover secret but WRH already knew WQ and WN had helped the Yunmeng trio so WHERE WAS THE NEED FOR SECRECY #you're just putting them in danger from your own side!!!#you're also making yourselves look super shady bc what if someone ELSE reveals that the Wens took you in and accuses you of collaborating?#this feels very much less like 'these characters are flawed multifaceted human beings' and more like 'the plot required this'#you expect me to believe JC wouldn't try to lowkey protect WQ #AND that JYL wouldn't confide to Madame Jin or JZX where she'd been #AND that WWX wouldn't invoke this debt when parting ways from LWJ?#ONE OF THEM WOULD TALK
